On September 21, an intrepid group of young Honda engineers took to the salt flats of Bonneville, Utah to post the fastest speed ever recorded for a Honda vehicle. Not only did the Honda engineers post a new FIA World Record of 261.875mph(1mile), 261.966mph(1km) for a vehicle in its class (Category-A Group-1 Class-4), it posted a speed faster than any Honda-powered car ever including the record established by BAR Honda F1 car at Bonneville in 2006, by using a 660cc engine based on the three-cylinder powerplant designed for the Honda S660 sports car

Vo l k s w a gen of America, Inc., recently announced that its specially tuned Volkswagen Beetle LSR, powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injection fourcylinder TSI® gasoline engine, has achieved 205.122 mph over a flying mile—the fastest speed ever recorded for a Beetle. The car was driven by Automobile magazine contributing Editor Preston Lerner on the famed Bonneville Salt Flats in Wendover, Utah, at the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association (USFRA) 2016 World of Speed event. To achieve the horsepower needed to run above 200 mph at Bonneville, while adhe-

ring to Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) G/BGC rules, the powertrain was specially modified by THR Manufacturing, based in Santa Paula, Calif. With new turbochargers, pistons, camshafts, connecting rods, and head modifications, it produced 543 horsepower and 421 pound-feet of torque at the wheels: at the flywheel, that would be more than 600 hp and nearly 500 lb-ft. “We are completely thrilled with the Beetle LSR’s performance at Bonneville,” said Dr. Hendrik Muth, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing and Strategy, Volkswagen of America. “The Beetle is not the most aerodynamic car in our portfolio, so running 205 mph is a testament to the power that can be made from the EA888 TSI four-cylinder engine. This feat

Obviously, the Beetle had many other changes. The suspension was lowered, special Salt Flat wheels and tires fitted, a limited-slip differential added to aid traction, and the interior was stripped and outfitted with full safety equipment, such as a rollcage, racing seat and harness, and a fire suppression system. Plus, to help slow the car down, the Beetle was fitted with a pair of parachutes. “Exceeding 200 miles per hour in the Beetle LSR was a serious thrill,” said driver Preston Lerner. “We had enough power to go even faster if the salt hadn’t been so sketchy. But seeing 208 miles per hour briefly on the

Volkswagen’s stock Beetle R-Line® coupe model features a EA888 turbocharged and direct-injection 2.0-liter TSI engine that makes 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque (achieved using premium fuel), enabling the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.6 seconds and to reach an electronically governed top track speed of 130 mph. The engine delivers peak torque from as low as 1700 rpm, giving smooth, effortless acceleration in all the gears. The R-Line comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, but a dual-clutch DSG® six-speed automatic transmission is optional.

AN EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE

The

CXPERIENCE concept car is immediately recognisable. With its two-box style and cleverly designed rear-hinged doors, it looks ready to leap forwards. The bold lines express power, while the generous curves and smooth volumes express the car’s own stylistic language. A vehicle of imposing proportions (4.85m long, 2m wide) with a very low roof (1.37m tall) and short overhangs (3m wheelbase), the CXPERIENCE concept car allies its majestic stature with flowing lines. The pearlescent sea green “Mizuiro” bodywork is modern, relaxed and sober. The colour further underlines the upmarket looks of this concept car, with its large 22-inch wheels and 5-spoke covers. At the front, the pure lines of this concept car are very much in evidence, with an original light signature expressing a new take on the layered headlights that are part of Citroën’s identity. Other attributes of CXPERIENCE CONCEPT include a smooth front end and special grille. The chevrons accentuate the vehicle’s width with the chrome-finish bar angling out to the headlights. The observer’s eye is drawn in particular to the V-shaped DRLs, which give the car a high-tech look. They are made up of fine 3mm wide strips with the indicators elegantly positioned in between. For greater efficiency, the controlled air intakes are integrated with the front bumpers. Mobile flaps designed to open and close are positioned on either side of the vehicle. These contribute to aerodynamic performance on the road while also making manoeuvres easier.



AN EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE

The rear end of the concept car also makes a statement with strongly marked wings and a concave rear window with a mobile fin at the bottom for improved aerodynamics. The 3D rear lights featuring laser fibre optics are also V-shaped. The indicators are positioned in the centre under a slim one-way panel, giving CXPERIENCE CONCEPT a unique, hightech identity. Another characteristic styling feature contributing to the unique personality of theCXPERIENCE concept car are the rear-hinged autoclave doors rising to the top of the roof and opening to a 90°perpendicular angle (in line with the wheels), making it easy to get in. Inspired by architecture, decoration and furnishings, the cabin of CXPERIENCE CONCEPT is a work of clean, contemporary lines. Featuring premium materials, it is decorated in a citrus yellow shade, synonymous with a fresh, optimistic mindset. Alongside the single-spoke steering wheel, a nod to the brand’s history, the floating dashboard is of horizontal design. It has a three-dimensional appearance, with a sculpted, tubular cut-out extending from the right rear door to the left rear door in a single piece. The yellow tones of the interior ambience enhance the original sense of visual continuity between each of the areas dedicated to the driver or passengers. The flat foam floor was made to measure. It is covered in dark, textured leather with a destructured design. On either side, broad chrome-finish sills underline the careful emphasis placed on interior colours and materials.

Designed as a true “cocoon”, CXPERIENCE CONCEPT filters out the outside world along with the bumps and dips of the road and employs a progressive hydraulic cushions advanced module. Came out many weeks ago, this exclusive Citroën technology significantly improves the filtration system regardless of the defects road ensuring an outstanding driving comfort. To make every journey a friendly, relaxing experience, the front seats feature tapered backrests and openwork headrests to provide greater visibility for passengers in the rear. In tune with its times the Citroën CXPERIENCE concept car is welcoming, comfortable and hyperconnected. Drastically integrated in the middle of the dashboard, the 19-inch and 16/3 format rectangular screen is the key onboard feature. Functioning as the vehicle control centre, it clears superfluous controls from the dashboard and reinforces the impression of width and space. Easy to use by reason of its size, this screen groups all the onboard functions: air conditioning, driving aids, navigation and media sources. The infotainment options are presented in such a way as to enable easy browsing by all the occupants, who can find information on their journey, select their own music or watch their favourite film. Two other control features – a smartphone and a mobile tablet – maintain digital continuity and activate a number of onboard functions. At the front, a central console houses a dedicated smartphone stand. Induction-rechargeable and connected to the screens, the smartphone starts the car and activates a ran-

ge of control functions (comfort, photos, videos, etc.). At the rear, passengers have access to a mobile tablet. Citroën CXPERIENCECONCEPT opts for high-tech rear vision with front and rear cameras. At the same time, the conventional exterior door mirrors are replaced by two discreet side cameras sending pictures to small digital screens. Located just behind the interior rear-view mirror, this wide-angle HD connected camera records whatever the driver sees on the road. Citroën CXPERIENCE CONCEPT delivers outstanding dynamic performance with a petrol engine developing between 150 and 200 bhp and up to 80 kW of additional energy provided by the electric motor. CXPERIENCE CONCEPT can be driven in all-electric mode in the city (ZEV -Zero Emission Vehicle) where it has a range of 60 km. On the open road, fuel consumption can be limited by using the two forms of energy together in successive acceleration phases. On the motorway, the internal combustion engine takes over to deliver real performance at the wheel, with total power of up to 300 bhp. Citroën CXPERIENCE CONCEPT has a 13 kWh battery that can be charged in just a few hours. The vehicle can be charged in 4 1/2 hours with a standard charging system, or in less than 2 1/2 hours with an ultra-simple charging solution based on a 6.6 kW charger designed for connection to a 32A socket. The attractive, functional signature of this drivetrain can be seen on top of the bonnet in the form of two battery charge indicators extending the line of each DRL.

The architecture of CitroĂŤn CXPERIENCE CONCEPT is ingenious and unique. The 8-speed electric automatic gearbox is placed transversely between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor, and a compact battery is positioned under the cabin to deliver electric power to the rear axle. This maintains both passenger space and boot capacity. This plug-in hybrid new solution invites users to enjoy a new driving experience whereby they can travel from city centres to the most isolated areas without restriction, receiving exceptional dynamic performances thanks to the electric motor additional energy, while also respecting the environment.

recently unveiled the working prototype of its futuristic BladeGlider vehicle, combining zero-emissions with high-performance in a revolutionary sports car design. Carlos Ghosn, Nissan’s President and Chief Executive Officer, said: “These prototypes epitomise Nissan’s drive to expand its Intelligent Mobility strategy, where driving pleasure combines with environmental responsibility. Nissan believes that enthusiasts should look forward to a zero emission future and BladeGlider is a perfect demonstration of that. It’s the electric vehicle for car-lovers.” The debut of the BladeGlider prototypes forms part of Nissan’s ongoing commitment to the development of zero-emission vehicles and new automotive technologies including autonomous drive systems and connectivity. Nissan already sells the world’s highest-volume zeroemission car, the Leaf, and is pioneering Intelligent Mobility systems that will be deployed in a range of vehicles over coming years. With the BladeGlider, Nissan’s vision was for an agile, efficient EV that would provide new dimensions of driving fun and excitement - a car that would ‘glide’, thanks to the near-silent performance of its electric powertrain and aerodynamic shape. After two years of work on design, engineering and development, Nissan BladeGlider has evolved further into an exciting, real-life study into the potential of advanced EV performance. The demonstration models feature an advanced chassis configuration with a narrow front track and wider rear track for optimum aerodynamic efficiency and handling stability.

T H E O LY M P I C N I S S A N High-waisted, rear-hinged dihedral doors provide a dramatic entry and exit to the cabin. The open roof of BladeGlider is reinforced with an integrated roll-over protection structure, providing the exhilaration of an open-topped race car with the safety of a coupé. Wheel-mounted controls for BladeGlider’s systems feed into an advanced display showing speed, state of battery charge, regeneration mode and torque map. Flanking the central display are two screens, with the images of rearview cameras mounted just behind the front wheels. An alternative to door-mounted mirrors, this dual screen design improves the aerodynamic efficiency of BladeGlider. The driver sits in arrowhead formation slightly in front of two passengers, who enjoy extended legroom. The view for all occupants is panoramic, thanks to the seamless cockpit windscreen.

Power is 100 percent electric, with exceptional powertrain performance delivered by Nissan’s technical partner for the BladeGlider project, UK-based Williams Advanced Engineering. Maximum speed of the demonstration models is in excess of 190km/h, with 0-100km/h taking less than 5 seconds. The rear wheels’ drive is provided by two 130kW electric motors – one for each wheel. The system features torque vectoring, controlling the torque delivered to the driven wheels, improving the handling even further. With torque vectoring, if the car starts to understeer, it automatically sends more torque to the outside wheel to restore the handling balance. Designed to add to the driving experience rather than govern it, the torque vectoring systems has three settings: off, agile and drift mode. Power is supplied by a high performance five module lithium-ion 220kW battery. Bespo-


ke cooling systems have been developed for both the battery and the motors. The interior of the BladeGlider reflects the vehicles’ sporting intentions, with four point safety harnesses for each occupant. The seats offer exceptional support to sides and legs of the driver and passengers. The seats are trimmed in a highly tactile blend of fabric and epoxy resin coating, resulting in a tough and grippy material that has the effect of comfortably adhering occupants securely in place. There are two colour trims – Cyber Green and Stealth Orange. These colours are used for the upper portions of the seat back, and framed with a silver reflective material to create an eyecatching, sporty look. The base of the seats are in black, patterned material, with a band of green and orange trim framing the cushion.

The Paris Auto Show (Mondial de l’Automobile ) has once again impressed the whole automotive sector with the most important car manufacturers exhibiting their models across 123.567 m2 and 8 pavilions. One of the highlights though was the absence of Mazda, Bentley, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Ford, Rolls-Royce and Volvo from the main floor. These manufacturers decided to revise their strategy regarding auto shows, concentrating on smaller, cheaper events that provide less competition for attention in the digital era, possibly setting a trend that many other could follow (are we heading towards the end of “classic� old fashioned auto shows?). Despite this there was plenty for everyone, from connected vehicles, to autonomous driving, new energies, to (of course) fast and beautiful supercars!

AUDI

Q5, RS 3, A5 & S5 The new Audi Q5 from Audi boasts a sculpturally flared singleframe grille with a solid frame that dominates its aerodynamically flat front end. It is available with Xenon headlights as standard and either LED or high-resolution Matrix LED with dynamic indicators as options. 4.66 metres long, 1.89 metres wide and 1.66 metres tall with a 2.82-metre wheelbase the new Q5 has grown in nearly all of its dimensions. But the unladen weight was reduced by up to 90 kg. The new Audi Q5 is launching with a powerful 2.0 TDI engine producing 190PS. The new Audi RS 3 took to the stage in saloon form at the Paris Motor Show. The 400PS, 174mph RS 3 makes history as the first saloon in the brand’s history to use a transversely mounted configuration for its powerplant. The new 2.5 TFSI delivers 400PS and 480 Nm of torque, available at engine speeds between 1,700 and 5,850 revolutions per minute. Such firepower allows the the compact RS model to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.1 seconds. The all-new second generation model of the Audi A5 Sportback has a completely new platform, the very latest engine, transmission and quattro drive developments and a host of contemporary driver assistance and infotainment systems. Sharing the stage at Paris was the flagship Audi S5 Sportback, which draws upon a new V6 turbocharged TFSI powerplant to deliver a hefty 354PS and 500Nm of torque from 1,370 to 4,500 rpm. From rest, it will blast past 62mph in only 4.7 seconds and can reach a limited top speed of 155mph.

ALFA ROMEO Giulia Veloce

Alfa Romeo showcased two new Giulia Veloce variants, both with 8-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive: the first model sees the dÊbut of the Blue Misano livery and is fitted with the new 280 HP 2.0-litre Turbo petrol engine, while the second Giulia Veloce, displaying an alluring Silverstone grey body, is fitted with the new 210 HP 2.2-litre Diesel engine. The exterior of the new Giulia Veloce stands out both for its refined styling features, such as the specific bumpers and glossy black door trim, as well as for various sports contents such as the special rear extractor which incorporates a double exhaust pipe and the optional 5-hole 19� alloy wheel rims.

Concept X2 & 3 Series Gran Turismo

The distinctive character of the BMW Concept X2 is expressed with its large wheels and familiar two-box design, a long wheelbase, stretched roofline, short overhangs and heavily forward-slantingC-pillar. The interplay of the darker cladding surfaces and striking Luminous Red body colour make the Concept X2 look slim from the side. At 4,824 millimetres in length, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is around 200 millimetres longer than the other members of the BMW 3 Series family. And that takes it close to luxury-class territory. The design of the new BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo includes new, standard-fitted LED headlights for dipped and high beam and the LED front foglamps. All of the petrol engines and the four- cylinder diesel in the BMW 325d are making their debuts with the introduction of the new model.

C3 & CXPERIENCE Concept New C3’s design is charismatic at the front end and with its generous curves, producing a powerful, energetic posture. The slick, smooth outline, graphic signature and colours make New C3 particularly appealing to the eye. Advanced driver assistance systems come with the extended full range of high-performance, high efficiency engines (PureTech petrol, BlueHDi diesel) and the EAT6 latest-generation automatic transmission. DACIA

Logan & Sandero Dacia has refreshed the exterior and interior design of its four signature models, namely the Logan, the Logan MCV, the Sandero and the Sandero Stepway. These enhancements embody Dacia‘s new assertive and modern lighting signature. The design of the front and rear lights has been revised. The front LED daytime running lights feature a pattern of four stacked rectangles. The rear lighting signature is based on four illuminated squares. The new Logan, the new Logan MCV and the new Sandero all share a more modern front bumper design. Seven different powertrains are available from launch, including the new, Euro6 compliant SCe 75.

GTC4Lusso & LaFerrari Aperta


The Ferrari GTC4Lusso T is the first four-seater in Prancing Horse history to sport a turbocharged V8 engine. Thrilling driving dynamics are delivered by a combination of rear-wheelonly drive, four-wheel steering, lighter overall weight and increased weight bias towards the rear (46:54). The car’s 3.9-litre V8 turbo maximum power output is 610 cv at 7,500 rpm while maximum torque of 760 Nm is available at between 3,000 and 5,250 rpm. The GTC4Lusso T’s dynamic control systems have been specifically calibrated to boost responsiveness to commands. In particular, the 4WS

(rear-wheel steering), which is integrated with Side Slip Control (SSC3), makes for more rapid response to steering wheel inputs entering and exiting corners, thanks to the rear wheels steering in the same direction as the front ones. Available with both a carbon-fibre hard top (optional) and soft top, the LaFerrari Aperta boasts the same specification and characteristics as the LaFerrari. It is equipped with the same hybrid power unit as the coupé: an 800 cv 6,262cc V12 engine coupled with a 120 kW electric motor for a total power output of a 963 cv.

124 Spider “America” The new Fiat 124 Spider “America” Special Edition celebrates, with special equipment, the 124 Spider that commemorated the 50th anniversary of Pininfarina in the 1980s. Upon request, the new 124 Spider America can be supplied with 17” light alloy wheel rims in the historic design and rear baggage rack. These two accessories are developed by Mopar.


HONDA

Civic & Civic Type R

Wider, longer, and lower than any of its predecessors, the tenth-generation Civic has short overhangs and taut lines that reference the high levels of aerodynamic efficiency. A sharp and aggressive ‘face’, pronounced wheel-arches and sculpted front and rear intakes hint at the Civic’s sporting character. The all-new Civic hatchback is the first model in Europe to offer Honda’s 1.0 litre three-cylinder and 1.5 litre four-cylinder gasoline turbocharged engines. Both engines will be available with either a newly-designed six-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic. Based on the low and wide proportions of the new Civic hatchback, the Type R Prototype is enhanced by muscular body styling and modifications to aid aerodynamic performance. The exterior is clothed in a highly reflective, finely-grained brushed aluminium-effect finish unique to the show car.

Based on the New Generation Hyundai i30, the RN30 was born as a racing machine, developed in close collaboration with Hyundai Motorsport, Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center and Hyundai Motor’s Performance Development & High Performance Vehicle Division. The concept is distinguished by its purposeful aerodynamic design and specialized high-performance technologies that deliver thrilling high-speed driving. The silhouette of the RN30 is unmistakably inherited from the clean and cohesive lines of the New Generation Hyundai i30, but with a lower, wider stance to enable greater stability during high speed driving and cornering.


JEEP

Renegade Desert Hawk & Cherokee Night Eagle II Based on the Trailhawk trim, the Jeep Renegade Desert Hawk boasts the outline of a map and the US Army Star decal located on the vehicle. A Matte Black front grille and 17” Black Aluminium wheels also contribute to enhance the distinctive look of this vehicle. The Renegade powertrain offer will be further extended thanks to the introduction of the Dual Dry-Clutch six-speed automatic transmission on the efficient 1.6-litre Multjet II engine with Stop&Start. Designed to enhance the already bold design of Jeep Cherokee, the ‘Night Eagle II’ special-edition model will be based on the Limited trim level, and will feature a special

aesthetic treatment with black styling cues to enhance the aggressive look and sporty character of the Jeep mid-size SUV. The Night Eagle II is powered by a 2.2-litre Multijet II 200 HP engine offered in combination with the 9-speed automatic transmission and Active Drive I 4x4 system. It will be available in five exterior colors, including Black, White, Billet Silver, Granite Crystal and Deep Cherry Red starting December across Europe.

KIA Rio

At the front, the Rio wears the latest evolution of Kia’s ‘tiger-nose’ grille, now thinner in height and wider across the front of the car. Overall, the new car is 15 mm longer than its predecessor (now 4,065 mm long), and 5 mm shorter in height (to 1,450 mm). The new Rio is available with a choice of black or grey cloth seat upholstery, or with black or grey artificial leather. A ‘Red Pack’ for the Rio gives buyers black with red artificial leathertrimmed seats throughout the cabin. The cabin itself features gloss black and metallic trim throughout, for a more modern finish.


LAND ROVER

Discovery

Land Rover’s ensures New Discovery to accommodate seven full-sized adults in an SUV body measuring less than five meters in length (4,970mm). The interior of New Discovery continues the design revolution started by the Discovery Sport, where customers can specify a range of premium materials including luxurious Windsor leather upholstery and natural oak veneers. The optional Dynamic Design Pack gives New Discovery

a more purposeful, stealth-like appearance both inside and out, with features including a contrast roof, athletic front and rear bumper designs, luxurious leather upholstery and a sports-inspired steering wheel and pedals setting it apart. New Discovery is powered by Jaguar Land Rover’s range of four and six cylinder petrol and diesel engines, all paired with a responsive ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox.

LEXUS

UX Concept All on-board HMI technology has been designed to offer customers an innovative, three-dimensional driver experience. The driver’s instrument binnacle houses a transparent globe, floating in the manner of a hologram, in which a combination of analogue and digital information express a functional yet unexpected user interface. And the center console features a prominent, facetted crystal structure within which a hologram-style display of air-conditioning and infotainment information is clearly visible to both driver and front passenger. The latest advanced in-vehicle electrical technologies are also on display in the new UX Concept. It features electro-chromatic windows, and the door mirrors are replaced by e-mirror camera housings far slimmer than conventional mirror housing. All switchgear is electrostatic, and housed under transparent covers.

GT Roadster & GLC 43 Mercedes unveiled the Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster. The open-top two-seater will be available in two versions from market launch in February 2017. In the AMG GT Roadster base model, the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo produces 350 kW (476 hp). The even more dynamic and visually distinct Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster combines its peak output of 410 kW (557 hp) with highly exclusive equipment and appointments. Paris also marked the premiere of the new Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupé. The 270 kW (367 hp) 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine, the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission with shortened shift times and the rear-biased AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive form the basis for an exceptionally agile on-road driving experience.

The concept vehicle, with the appearance of a sporty SUV coupĂŠ, gives a preview of a new generation of vehicles with battery-electric drives. The dynamic exterior design with its new electro-look underlines the focus on the powerful electric drive system: two elec-

tric motors, with a system output that can be increased to up to 300 kW thanks to scalable battery components, and permanent all-wheel drive deliver the guarantee of dynamic highlevel performance. The Generation EQ has a range of up to 500 kilometres.

John Cooper Works Clubman The new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman is the biggest of its kind in the brand’s model program. Distributed as needed between the front and rear wheels in every situation thanks to ALL4, the drive torque is generated by a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology and model-specific modifications derived from motor racing. With a peak output of 170 kW/231 hp and a maximum torque of 350 Newton metres, this engine accelerates the new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman from zero to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, with both the standard 6-speed manual transmission and the optional 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission.


MITSUBISHI GT-PHEV Concept

The Mitsubishi GT-PHEV Concept next-generation SUV is powered by MMC’s own advanced plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) system using triple motors. Inside, the Mitsubishi GT-PHEV Concept uses a horizontal dashboard that creates a spacious ambiance. This PHEV system comprises a next-generation high-capacity drive battery package, three high-output and high-efficiency motors and an engine designed especially for the PHEV system featuring improved electricity generation performance and motive performance. This combination makes for comfortable driving on longer trips as well with an electric-only range of 120 km and a combined hybrid cruising range of over 1,200 km.

NISSAN Micra

The Micra Gen5 fully embodies Nissan’s latest design language with signature design including the distinctive V-motion grille, boomerang-shaped lights, and the floating roof. The looks are matched by a selection of 10 sophisticated and vivid exterior colours, including Energy Orange. Additional exterior and interior personalisation options allow for the creation of 125 different variations. At launch, the car will offer the choice of a 0.9-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel, both developing 90hp.The range will be joined soon after by a naturally aspirated 73hp 1.0-litre petrol engine.


OPEL

Ampera-e The Ampera-e could have a class-leading pure electrical range that can exceed 250 miles without recharging (NEDC provisional figure). Clever integration of the ten battery modules means that the 4.17 metre-long car can accommodate five people, yet still offers a 381-litre boot. The battery package is located in the underbody and is tailored to the contours of the vehicle, with no space wasted. The battery, developed in cooperation with LG Chem, comprises 288 lithium-ion cells and has a capacity of 60 kWh. With maximum torque of 360Nm and power equivalent to 204PS, zero to 30mph takes 3.2 seconds.

PEUGEOT 5008 & 3008

The new PEUGEOT 5008 breaks new ground as a large seven-seater SUV in the C segment, with 2.84m wheelbase, as the overall length of the vehicle (4.64m) remains compact. The all-new PEUGEOT 5008 SUV includes the latest version of the PEUGEOT iCockpit, Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2), and a plethora of high-tech features that enhance comfort and safety. A range of powerful, efficient engines and designs - including sporty GT Line and GT versions - is available for the new PEUGEOT 5008 SUV. Among these four petrol engines and six diesel engines. The PEUGEOT 3008 comes in play with efficient engines and designs—including sporty GT and GT Line versions. The PEUGEOT 3008 SUV, is the beginning of a new line of SUVs from PEUGEOT that will be recognized around the world.


PORSCHE

Panamera 4 E-Hybrid The Panamera 4 E-Hybrid with standard all-wheel drive and an electric range of up to 31 miles (50 km) was presented in Paris. The plug-in hybrid vehicle generates 462 hp of total system output and delivers impressive fuel consumption of 2.5 l/100 km, which corresponds to only 56 g/km of CO2 emissions. All figures to date are based upon the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). The new Porsche plug-in hybrid always starts in electric mode and continues as a zeroemission vehicle with a maximum all-electric range of 31 miles and a maximum speed on battery power of 86 mph. The all-wheel drive four-door Porsche still achieves a top track

speed of 172 mph and delivers a total system torque of 516 pound-feet without hesitation. The newest plug-in hybrid sports sedan breaks the 0-60 barrier in just 4.4 seconds. The Sport Chrono Package, which integrates a mode switch into the steering wheel, forms part of the standard equipment on the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. The mode switch and PCM are used to activate the various driving modes. These modes include the familiar “Sport” and “Sport Plus” modes from other Panamera models equipped with the Sport Chrono Package. The hybrid-specific modes are “E-Power,” “Hybrid Auto,” “E-Hold,” and “E-Charge.”

RENAULT TREZOR

The TREZOR features striking red glazing and innovative carbon bodywork with contrasting surface finishes. At the rear, it features hexagonal panels that underline the TREZOR’s sporting temperament and technology. On the left-hand side of the body, the petrol filler hatch has been replaced by an analogue gauge that indicates the vehicle’s charge level, drawing on traditional sports car practice. The TREZOR

boasts proportions of a GT (length: 4,700mm / width: 2,180mm / height: 1,080mm) while tipping the scales at just 1,600kg. The TREZOR is fitted with tailor-developed Continental tyres, fitted to 21- and 22-inch wheels respectively at the front and rear. Thanks to Renault’s MULTI-SENSE system, the TREZOR offers a choice of three driving modes: neutral, sport and autonomous.


SEAT

Ateca X-Perience SEAT presented the Ateca X-Perience. SEAT Drive Profile offers Normal, Sport, Eco and Individual modes, however, it’s also possible to go a step further, thanks to the 4Drive traction control settings, provided by the efficient Haldex system, which includes two additional profiles for snow and off-road, as well as Hill Descent Control function. The objective of the X-Perience is to underline the all-terrain characteristics of the SEAT Ateca. The showcar is powered by the 2.0 TDI 190 PS engine with 400 Nm of torque allied to a seven-speed paddle-shift DSG transmission.

SMART electric drive

The fourth-generation electric smart is now available in all three bodystyles – including, for the first time, the smart forfour. With torque of 160 Newton metres, the 60 kW electric car boasts exceedingly responsive acceleration. When fully charged the battery has sufficient power to cover approximately 160 kilometres (100 miles) in accordance with the NEDC. The maximum speed is electronically limited to 130 km/h (80 mph) to maximise the range. From 2017 a particularly powerful 22 kW fast charger will be available as an option. This enables the smart electric drive to be charged in as little as 45 minutes.


SKODA

Kodiaq

With a length of 4.70 m, up to seven seats and the largest boot within its class, the ŠKODA KODIAQ is the Czech car manufacturer’s first large SUV. From early 2017, ŠKODA’s latest model will be on the streets with its dimensions of 4,697 mm long, 1,882 mm wide and 1,676 mm tall. Five powertrains, two TDI and three TSI engines, make up the engine range at the launch of the. They have capacities of 1.4 and 2.0 l, and power output ranges from 92 kW (125 PS) to 140 kW (190 PS).

SSANGYONG LIV-2

The SsangYong LIV-2 - Limitless Interface Vehicle - is the final concept of the Y400 development model, and will be launched next year. As the latest iteration of the LIV-1 concept exhibited at the Seoul Motor Show in 2013, it advances the car’s design language and helps to communicate the brand theme of ‘Dignified Motion’. LIV-2 is powered by SsangYong’s own 2.2 litre Euro 6 diesel engine to achieve a powerful yet efficient performance, or its newly developed 2.0 litre GDi turbo petrol engine.


SUZUKI Ignis

Suzuki unveiled the Ignis, its new global compact crossover. The Ignis adopts a larger percentage of lightweight and strong high-tensile steel, making it possible to reduce vehicle weight while still maintaining a high level of rigidity. The new Ignis offers a rich lineup of 14 colour patterns, including three new body colours and the two-tone offerings. Two accent colours available for the interior match the body colours and enable drivers to choose the new Ignis that best suits their individual tastes. A 1.2 DUALJET (K12C) petrol engine powers the Ignis. This combines with the SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) mild hybrid system to realise even greater fuel efficiency.

VAUXHALL VIVA ROCKS

Arriving in showrooms next summer, the VIVA ROCKS features a raised ride height with rugged body cladding, a robust new interior and the latest connectivity including OnStar and R 4.0 IntelliLink. Five doors guarantee convenient access to the front and rear seats, which can be folded down to give the VIVA ROCKS an impressive luggage capacity of 1,013 litres. The ‘City’ driving mode reduces steering effort to assist with tight manoeuvres in heavy city traffic, with cruise control supporting speed management. Additional features that support the driver include Park Assist, which makes parking safer and easier.


VOLKSWAGEN

I.D.

I.D. is a highly automated electric car that will cover a distance of 400 to 600 kilometers on a single battery charge. The production version of the I.D. is due to be launched in 2020. It is the first vehicle to showcase Volkswagen’s iconic new design language for compact electric vehicles. The idea is that anyone who drives a Volkswagen in the future will be given their own Volkswagen ID. The ID is an individual profile, in which the personal seat and air conditioning settings, the favourite radio stations and songs, the configuration of the navigation system, and the type of ambient lighting, as well as the contact details of the driver’s friends and business associates, are saved. This profile can be securely acces-

sed via the cloud, enabling the I.D. to recognise the legitimate user by their smartphone. The four-door I.D. is 4,100 mm long and, thus, 155 mm shorter than a Golf. This concept car is 1,800 mm wide and 1,530 mm high. Between the front and rear sections the I.D. has a remarkable wheelbase of 2,750 mm; which is - despite the shorter exterior length 130 mm more than the Golf. Interactive light elements alter the look and feel of the concept car, depending on the mode that the I.D. is in. The I.D. can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 8 seconds from a standing start and has a top speed of 160 km/h. Subsequent production versions could also be offered with more or less powerful electric motors.

Gittin Jr’s first Formula Drift title came in 2010, and since then the 35-year-old has showed no sign of taking his foot off the gas. With an enviable trophy collection, which includes three World Drift titles, and the auspicious honor of being the first American to ever win a D1 Grand Prix event on Japanese soil; when Vaughn talks about drift, it’s time to listen. 2016 has been no different. At the wheel of a redesigned version of his signature Ford Mustang RTR - JR - as he is affectionately known to his friends and team - looks set to lift the season-ending silverware come the final event in just under a month’s time. With all the action focused on his Formula Drift championship campaign stateside, you would forgive JR for not venturing to European shores. Not so though. The first September week-end saw JR make tracks for the sell-out World RX of France, to give a slice of sideways Americana to the sun-scorched Lohéac crowds. “I’m doing awesome. I’m coming to the tail end of the craziest three months of travel this year, but everything I’ve been dreaming and working my ass off for is happening. It’s been an intense time of just having my head down and go-go-go. From Formula Drift, to doing demos, and the new RTR launching on November 1st. It’s been insanity, but I’m all smiles!”

IT’S GREAT TO SEE YOU BACK IN EUROPE SO SOON AFTER GOODWOOD. WHAT LURED YOU BACK?

“This year I was able to put some deals together with the Ford Performance Crew and Monster to come over to Europe for a few events. I did the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which was just an epic bucket list experience. Surrounded by some of the most exotic and prestigious cars from all over the world. I saw turbo F1 cars, shared the track with Group-B rally cars, it was just mind blowing. Then we came out here to the World RX of France in Lohéac, to put on a drift exhibition. I’m driving my Mustang on a rally course in front of 70,000 screaming French fans. The to top it off we are heading to Barcelona to put on another demonstration at the World Rallycross event there. For me it’s all about sharing drifting with new fans.” BACK HOME IN THE US AT FORMULA DRIFT - YOU ARE THIRD IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP – HAD TWO WINS – AND ARE TIED AS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL DRIVER IN THE SERIES’ HISTORY.

“Formula Drift has been going amazingly this year so far to be honest. We debuted a brand new car, which has worked out really well. We’ve had two wins, and been leading for the majority of the season so far. It was only at the last round that we dropped down to third place in the points, but there are two rounds left to go and I’m only 15 points behind Frederic Aasbo. Our goal is to go and win the championship, so really to debut a new car and win the title at the caliber Formu-

la Drift is unheard of, and we are on the cusp of pulling that off. I don’t feel like I have a lot of pressure, and I really feel like I’ve found something in myself. This year I’ve unlocked some brainpower and it’s coming together.” DOES THAT MEAN YOU’VE TAKEN A NEW APPROACH TO YOUR DRIVING TOO?

“When I think about it, the car has literally re-inspired my driving. This car now allows me to drive with my style and personality, but still be successful. Whereas the previous car, with the grip levels and set ups we were having to run, things kept getting on a knife-edge to where the risk of going big, like I like to, was too great. So ultimately I had to tone my driving down. When you can’t be yourself behind the wheel of a car especially in drift, you loose yourself a bit (in a bad way) – you are doing what the car wants. It shouldn’t be that way. The new car allows me to be me on track again, be more aggressive; lurch onto people’s doors; carrying that speed and staying committed.” THE RTR MUSTANG REALLY IS YOUR CARD – WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE LATEST VERSION?

“We actually built the car at the back end of last year. It’s an RTR Spec-5 FD. We basically took the brand new factory Mustang, as it is available globally, and set it up to suit us for drift. The way the suspension geometry works and puts the power down is very different to a lot of the cars in the series. The team and I have a little bit of a different theory on how

drift cars work, you’ll see the car on three wheels for example. It lifts the front corner, and we manage to extract a lot of grip out of our Nitto tyres. We have a very well developed chassis and we’ve just done a ton of work developing it. And you know, it’s just absolutely badass, it’s got 900 horsepower, absolutely screams.” YOU’VE BEEN WORKING HARD AWAY FROM THE TRACK TOO. WHAT IS THE “ULTIMATE FUN HAVER”, AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?

“Everyone knows me as a drift racer, and while that’s my passion and, what I’ve come up from, to my core I just enjoy driving and having a good time. If you cut through it all that’s all I think about, and that’s really the main thing I want to do. I’m a car guy, and when you look at the bigger picture, I can be more than just a drifter. I’ve done King of the Hammers off-road racing, I’ve done some grip racing, and I’ve played in the dirt with side-by-side buggies. I have a ton of fun with the racing professionally, and just wanted to own it. I think fun having is very universal, and it’s something everyone can relate to. So it seemed crazy not to share it. Let’s just put the obvious aside, I love drifting, but in the other endeavors I’ve really been having an amazingly good time in sideby-side’s; GTV’s. I have one with a Yamaha YXZ1000 motor and a sequential shifter on it. That’s been a blast. I also did King of the Hammers last year, which is a mixture of rock climbing, desert racing, short course stuff. It’s Ultra-4 category, and an epic challenge. The races are six hours long. I’m actually building something pretty special to do more of that for

next season. That’s a bit of an exclusive – as I haven’t publicly mentioned that to anyone up until now! So watch out for that in 2017! I’ve enjoyed some time back circuit racing, I did some Trans-Am and did the NASCAR comps, but for me off road is where it’s at.” IT’S ALL GOOD FOR CAR CONTROL SURELY?

“In a lot of ways playing in the dirt lends itself to drifting. Drift has really taught me such good car control to be able to adapt to anything. Anything I get behind the wheel of now, I can feel what the surface is like, what the grip levels are doing and I can be up to speed very quickly. The “Ass-Dyno” is very refined from driving sideways for a long time and having to feel for grip!... I’m having a blast, and I’m really excited that all my supporters are into it” SO MAYBE IT’S TIME YOU CAME AND HAD A PLAY IN RALLYCROSS TOO?

“Being here, and getting wrapped up in the atmosphere, it’s hard not to be jonesed for it. I’ve been obviously talking to Ken Block and Andreas Bakkerud about how it all works, and again – these things are all wheel drive drift cars. The way they work, the way they move. The technology and set up is awesome here. I definitely have my eyes on it. I have to be smart though, because my passion for driving and motorsport will make me spend every dollar I own. Who knows though, I’d definitely be interested, I just want to see where things line up.”

I don’t have my radar on that, because I don’t know how realistic that is for us, but that being said – crazier things have happened, right?!” SO WHAT ABOUT BRINGING YOUR COMP CAR TO EUROPE AND BATTLING HERE? WE’D LOVE TO SEE YOU GO DOOR TO DOOR WITH BAGGSY BIAGIONI OR EUROPEAN CHAMPION JAMES DEANE.

“I’m always down to battle it out, anytime, anywhere! I have a car here in Europe, but it’s a demo car – the one I’m using here at Lohéac. It’s not built for competition. So to be able to come over and battle properly, I think it’s only right that I have my competition car, and competition equipment. That’s fair to whomever I’m battling too then. I’m open to it, no doubt. We’ll see though, if my supporters and sponsors want to see it happen badly enough, we will do that. Right now I’m focused on Formula Drift though, it is the premier drift series in the world, so that’s where we will like to stay. I’ll flip the question – when are James Deane and Baggsy Biagioni coming to Formula D?!”

year’s main focus was ‘Life in 66’, the year Goodwood Motor Circuit first closed its doors to racing. Fifty years on, the drivers and manufacturers returned to Goodwood this weekend, now considered the spiritual home of British motor racing, for the yearly and nostalgic showcase of motor sport’s Golden Age. Track parades and competitive racing allowed fans and enthusiasts to celebrate Formula One’s 1966 ‘Return to Power’, Sir Jack Brabham’s third Formula One world title and career, and more broadly the English football team’s 1966 World Cup victory, which helped to set the scene both on and off track. The unpredictable British weather treated eventgoers to plenty of action throughout the

Henry Dark stormed to victory in the opening installment of the Setterington Cup. Young Henry was in a class of his own among the junior racers who pedaled identical Austin J40s. He finished a clear eight car lengths ahead of his pursuers, with Jon Milicevic Jr placing second ahead of a hard-charging James Blakeney-Edwards. In a short post-race interview, young Master Dark attributed his victory to ‘training hard’. has displayed the raw power and speed of its 6.4L V8 HEMI engined Grand Cherokee SRT by becoming the first 4x4 vehicle to race a plane around a track – and winning. The Jeep vs plane challenge was inspired by the origins of the HEMI engine which was first developed for the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft, and is now, in its latest form, housed under the bonnet of the Grand Cherokee SRT. Blyton Park Driving Centre, Lincolnshire, hosted the head-to-head around its 1.8 mile circuit and saw both car and plane reach speeds in excess of 140 mph. While the Grand Cherokee SRT tackled the race track, the Silence SA1100 Twister

plane navigated around seven-metre high pylons, as they both attempted to reach the chequered flag first. Capable of reaching 0-62mph in less the five seconds, the 6.4L V8 HEMI powered Grand Cherokee SRT delivers a massive 461hp, and is packed full of high-performance technologies including launch control, Selec-Trac transmission and air-cooled 6 piston Brembo brake callipers which have a stopping distance of 116ft from 60-0mph. The Grand Cherokee SRT was driven by Ed Morris – the youngest ever British driver to compete at Le Mans 24 hour, while the Silence SA1100 Twister plane was flown by Peter Wells, a specialist aerobatic pilot with over 25 years of flying experience.

state-of-the-art Tenneco facility produces conventional single and double tube shock absorbers in addition to part of the MonroeÂŽ Intelligent Suspension electronic shock portfolio, cabin dampers, coil and air suspension, sintered metal and stamping parts and complete valving components. The facility supplies both original equipment manufacturers and the replacement market for Europe, South Africa, North America, South America, Australia and Asia. The key processes are tubing, rods (machining, hardening, grinding, chroming, polishing, welding), base assembly welding, water-based electrostatic painting, modular assembly and Aftermarket packaging. Two technologies from the MonroeÂŽ Intelligent Suspension portfolio are industrialized in clean room environments in Sint-Truiden. These include Dual Mode adaptive suspension technology that offers compact car drivers a default comfort drive or a more sporty ride at the touch of a button. Dual Mode features a simple control unit to electronically switch between soft and firm damping levels. Dual Mode is assembled in Sint-Truiden for the Ford Focus RS using state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques including laser welding for valving pre-load and piston rod assembly, and inline testing including electrical switching.

A second line is dedicated to the production of CVSA2/KINETIC® that features Tenneco’s KINETIC®-branded roll control system in a semi-active damping system. CVSA2/KINETIC® eliminates the need for roll bars, reducing vehicle weight while giving superior drive performance. Its handling of roll and traction makes it the ideal solution for the demands of off-road SUV and sports car drivers. Advanced manufacturing techniques include vacuum oil filling and full end line testing including integration into the vehicle’s electrical and hydraulic system. Approximately 95 percent of the plant’s output goes to major vehicle manufacturers including VW, Audi, Ford, Daimler, Chrysler, Renault Trucks, Volvo Trucks, Scania and Daf. In addition, 5 percent of the plant’s total production is destined for the replacement market. The Sint-Truiden facility is one of seven Tenneco Ride Performance manufacturing facilities in the European region. The others are located in Hodkovice, the Czech Republic; Birmingham, the U.K.; Hanover, Germany; Gliwice, Poland; Ermua, Spain and Port Elizabeth, South Africa which is managed by the European region. Ride Performance Europe manufactured 27.5 million shock absorbers in 2015. In 2015, Tenneco Ride Performance facilities worldwide manufactured more than 90 million shock absorbers for both original equipment and aftermarket applications.


Close to the Sint-Truiden main manufacturing facility is the Monroe® Engineering & Technology Center (METC), that performs suspension system research, development, and testing. METC was built in 1995 and currently has 165 employees. Research areas include: • Mechatronics: Harvesting energy by means of electro magnetism and developing low cost damper technologies. • Vehicle Dynamics: Understanding vehicle shock absorber requirements and component interactions to improve driving dynamics for proactive and predictive development. • Predictive Tools: Developing computational tools to accelerate product development and predict engineering parameters. • Material Sciences: Researching advances in the material industries that are relevant to Tenneco such as long fibre composites, high strength steel, aluminum and joining techniques. • Human Comfort: Understanding the human neuromuscular system and defining strategies for enhancing the perception of comfort. • Adjacent Technologies: Understanding current and future technologies that could bring added value to ride performance, such as vision systems.
