THE GREAT AMERICAN It’s billed as “The Great American Off Road Race” and made legendary by the tale of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. The Best in the Desert Mint 400 is a fabled race in the off-road community and one that many desperately want to add to their roster of wins and trophies. It’s easy to see why as it’s gone from its humble beginnings as a desert motorcycle race to a spectacle that screams Las Vegas, The Mint has truly made itself into more than just an open desert competition

Mint is a race that takes over Las Vegas when it rolls into town. It’s nearly treated as its own event but it’s one race in the Best in the Desert (BITD) series for 2017 and is the second one towards the season championships. Because of the work of BITD Founder, Casey Folks, and the Martelli Brothers (who currently runs the Mint 400), the event has become so much more than just a race. Though, this year must have felt bittersweet due to the shocking passing of Folks earlier in 2017. While it probably feels like there is a hole with him missing from the start line, the race and series went on as Folks would have wanted them to as he was a racer himself. The week starts off on March 2nd with Time Trials for the Trick Truck class to determine the start order. This is unlike many of the other classes where a draw is used instead of racing it out. This year, Monster had impressive and longtime racers under their belt with BJ Baldwin, Troy and Tim Herbst, and Cameron Steele. Casey Currie in a brand new Jeep Trick Truck also entered but did not run in the Time Trials. Baldwin would end up leading the Monster crew with a tenth-place start but not terribly far behind was Troy Herbst in fifteenth. Steele would end up with a twenty-sixth start while Tim Herbst would settle for a forty-first start. Currie, because he did not run, would end up the 68th and last starter for The Mint 400.

Afterwards, the Monster Energy Terrible Herbst team would come back with their own victory later that day in the Pit Crew Competition. While not a deciding factor for The Mint, it is crowd pleasing show that gives teams a chance to allow their pit crew a moment of glory and spotlight they don’t usually get. A portion of Fremont Street gets closed down just for this event and this year had eight Trick Truck teams that included Troy’s number 91 truck. In the end, Las Vegas’ own Terrible Herbst would sling their tires on the fastest and take home the golden jack. Finally came race day on March 4th and The Mint is split into two races between the limited classes and unlimited classes. UTVs, including UTV Pro Turbo, are part of the limited class and would be the first racing vehicles of the day with the first pair racing off the start line with a six o’clock am start time. Monster Energy sponsored S3 Racing roared off the line at 6:19am with drivers Dustin Jones and Malcom Sneed. With a total race time of 7:39:58, they secured a Top Ten finish in UTV Pro Turbo. Next was the big race, the unlimited classes with Trick Trucks roosting dirt off the start at one o’clock pm. Starting in tenth, BJ was off the line at 1:06pm with Troy taking off behind him at 1:08pm. Last man off the line was Currie at 1:35pm and with over sixty trucks

ahead of him and his Jeep. With BJ starting tenth, he didn’t exactly have a clean path ahead of him but that didn’t stop him from making moves and driving right up to the leaders even before Lap Two. Troy Herbst had more time to make up but made quick work of it to start touching the Top Ten early in the day. With trucks breaking or taking extended stops for tires on the course, the Monster Energy drivers made pace and charged up to the Top Five with BJ leading the brigade and even fighting for Top Three by Race Mile 275. It was close, but when the trucks crossed the finish line, BJ Baldwin and Troy Herbst would take home Top Five finishes in fourth and fifth respectively. BJ turned in a full race time of 5:38:24 while Troy was just over eleven-minutes back with a 5:49:20. Tim Herbst wasn’t too far behind in time but with a 5:56:53, he would take home a Top Ten finish in 8th place. Finally, Casey Currie, in the Jeep Trick Truck, would pull in as the last Monster Energy driver after 9:12:19 of race time to take 29th place and passing over thirty trucks to finish The Mint 400.

Italdesign is a service company providing design, engineering and production for the transportation industry, through to final testing and type-approval and support into Starting of Production and the design of complete business models. “Lightweight�. This was the starting concept that designers and engineers implemented for the ZEROUNO project. Right from the first styling draft, the Styling Centre and the Engineering Development Department implemented what is defined as simultaneous engineering, a work method developed and perfected by Italdesign way back at the end of the 1960s and constantly improved over the company’s almost fifty-year history. Functional design has always distinguished projects set in motion and developed in Moncalieri: there are no styling proposals at Italdesign that do not also simultaneously embrace a technical solution. Limiting the final weight of the car as far as possible in order to ensure exceptional performances by equally emphasising the carbon fibre and aluminium chassis and the powerful V10 5.2 naturally aspired engine was the objective defined right from the start of this project. This is why the entire bodywork is in carbon fibre. The same material is also generously used inside the cockpit; the state of the art in fibre layering technology, together with the skills of craftsmen during the finishing stages, combined to achieve a light weight - despite the car measuring 4847 mm in length and 1970 mm in width by 1204 mm in height. BEAUTY IS THE BEAST Simultaneous engineering is ideally expressed by the exterior design. These two souls live together in complete harmony and exemplify

the car’s character: racing performances with type-approval for driving on normal roads. Relying on Italdesign advanced Virtual Reality Centre and the simulation techniques of Engineering, the designers were able to identify the most aerodynamic technical and aesthetic solutions and test them immediately - even before starting work on building the car. “We created the ZEROUNO to demonstrate the best skills of our 1,000 employees based on fourty-nine years of experience to further develop this business in the future, using the best and fastest processes and collaboration models. Beside offering these Ultra Low Series Programmes to all interested parties we will continue this story and put every 18-24 months ambitious and innovative concepts in an Ultra Low Series on the road to drive innovation forward so it can be experienced in daily life and to demonstrate the state of the art in technology for our customers” stated Jörg Astalosch, CEO Italdesign. INSPIRED BY RACE CARS The setting at the front is inspired by the ultimate top-performance cars: single-seater racing cars. The characteristic feature of the nose is the six-sided polygon first seen in the GTZero concept-car in 2016 which will also be referenced again in future projects. Together with the two side air intakes, it ensures the optimum flow of intake air. Potential lift effects caused by the intake of air through the central slot, as highlighted by simulated aerodynamic tests in the virtual reality centre, were eliminated thanks to an aerodynamic solution named Y Duct®.

Not only was the ZEROUNO’s front design inspired by the singleseater racing cars, the tyres too have a direct motorsport link. Italdesign chose Formula 1’s exclusive tyre supplier, Pirelli, to equipe its first Automobili Speciali model. The engineers developed a dedicated version of the high-performing Pirelli tyres, the P Zero, in 245/30 R20 for the front and 305/30 R20 for the back. Featuring High Working Range tread compounds, able to guarantee maximum grip in all conditions, ZEROUNO’s dedicated tyres belong to the new line of coloured tyres, premiered in Geneva by Pirelli. The new Pirelli tyres will be available in four different colors: white, red, yellow and metallic grey


The spoilers with overlapping wings that characterise the lower part of the car’s design at the front and the rear alike are suspended and help create an additional aerodynamic load. The slots on the front and rear wheel arches not only highlight ZEROUNO’s rather aggressive looks but also help dissipate hot air. The lights use Full LED technology and also perform an aerodynamic function since they are floating systems mounted inside the front and rear wings. The rear view highlights ZEROUNO’s “extreme” character - and the “semi-naked” styling is particularly evident: the taut, angular outlines of the spoilers reveal the tyres and, in the middle, the two 80 cm wide laminar exhausts in titanium, which are designed to accelerate the out-flow of exhaust gases. FUNCTIONAL DESIGN APPLIED TO RIMS Rims are usually noticed because of their generous dimensions and the aesthetic impact they have on the overall volume of the vehicle. This element was also specifically designed for ZEROUNO and is the equally the outcome of combined styling and engineering. Built in aluminium by the Italian company OZ, with a diameter of 20”, rims were designed to extract the hot air generated by the powerful carbon-ceramic braking system with 8 pistons at the front and 6 at the rear. The structure is fitted with a perimeter turbine in carbon fibre that maximises the aerodynamic effect and the cooling of the breaking system. INTERIOR In order to achieve a light weight designers and engineers also joined forces inside the cockpit.

Since this car has type-approval for driving on public roads - it is consequently equipped with front and side airbags. Italdesign emphasised the use of material and on-board systems ensuring high performance and low weight. The interior of the car is simultaneously essential yet elegant, in keeping with the exterior: carbon fibre dominates the overall styling. Door panels, dashboard and central tunnel are all made exclusively with this material. The digital cockpit houses all the car’s main controls. Three small monitors in the middle of the dashboard, on the other hand, control all air conditioning functions. The dual-clutch 7 speed gearbox is controlled by classic paddles mounted behind the steering wheel. ENDLESS CUSTOMISATION The five lucky owners of ZEROUNO will be able to maximise the customisation of their cars so that each one will be truly unique. Over and above finishing the bodywork with a colour specifically developed for the client, including full carbon look, Italdesign has also developed several optional packages involving the exterior and inside the cockpit. The most extreme customisation is offered with the “Corsa” package, which boosts an accentuated aerodynamic layout dedicated to race track performance and is designed to ensure the performances and the handling of the car with special designed light weight side mirrors, carbon fibre monocoque seats frame, racing rear wing with central longitudinal fin, monodado rims and a dedicated sport, titanium made, muffler. The “Corsa” package will be for track use only.

The lower part is modelled by aerodynamics. To achieve the performances we had in mind, we had to dare to go beyond all limits in styling and even from a purely technical points of view. is being restructured for the future as former Grand Prix winner Gerhard Berger was confirmed as Chairman of ‘Internationalen Tourenwagen Rennen. He takes over from DTM founder Hans Werner Aufrecht who has been at the helm of the series for more than 30 years. In order to successfully enhance the series, Berger will work on setting the strategic course for a successful future of the world’s most popular touring-car series. Gerhard Berger is looking forward to his new leading role at DTM: “I started my motorracing career in touring-car racing and always followed DTM with a lot of interest. DTM is a top-class product with independent, powerful regulations, with strong manufacturers, top sponsors, important international partnerships and many fans. This is a good starting point with great potential for the future. The first task I will focus on in the coming weeks is gaining a deeper insight into the details with the support of my colleagues. We will then use this strong basis for creating a joint strategy for the future. While doing so, I consider the further development of our international partnerships – also with regards to new manufacturers –, spectacular racing cars that also command the drivers’ respect as well as a format combining both sport and entertainment as particularly important.”


A BIGGER CHALLENGE The change at the helm of DTM forms part of a comprehensive strategy aiming to further develop the touring-car series. The strategy is intended to be implemented gradually from this year onwards. The most important modifications of the technical regulations were announced recently and focus on more power, less downforce and softer dry-weather tyres, so the technology of the 2017 DTM cars differs from the one of its predecessors in several significant areas. THE ENGINE In 2017, the four-litre V8 engines of Audi, BMW and Mercedes-AMG will produce – for the first time – more than 500bhp. The increased horsepower output mainly was achieved by bigger intake-system air restrictors. The engines are equipped with one air restrictor per cylinder bench and their diameter has been increased from 28 to 29 millimetres. Furthermore, the new regulations allow for enhancement in special intake-system areas special areas to optimise the engine’s performance even more. Nonetheless, maximum longevity still represents a top priority of the DTM engines’ design. Blown engines are extremely rare in DTM and usually, the engines survive the entire season. sealed engines only may be subjected to services in this period of time, according to the regulations. AERODYNAMICS The guidelines of the new regulations comprise a reduction of the aerodynamics. To achieve this goal, the geometry of the front splitter, underbody and rear diffuser was changed and the ride height was increased. Meanwhile, the rear wing and the DRS (Drag Reduction System) make for a major and visible difference. The DRS allows the driver to reduce his vehicle’s drag for a short time, thus increasing its top speed. In the past this made for many battles and overtaking manoeuvres. Other than last year’s rear wing that could be hinged down completely, only the so-called Guerney Flap, the upper of two fins of the rear wing, is flapped down what even increases the DRS efficiency. THE TYRES Combined with the new Hankook tyres that provide more grip for a short period of time but force the drivers to cope with a higher performance decrease over the distance, these changes make for a handling of the new DTM cars that is clearly more demanding for the drivers than it was in the past.

NEW CONTROL COMPONENTS The body design of this year’s DTM touring cars of Audi, BMW and MercedesAMG complies with the latest generation of their production brethren. To restrict the cost-intensive high-tech developments, the new regulations feature clearly more areas for jointly developed control components. The development of these components is controlled by the umbrella organisation ITR in close cooperation with the manufacturers’ engineers. For 2017, the range of control parts was extended – inter alia – by components for the suspension area. Furthermore, the DTM control wheel also will make its debut. From this year, all the 18 cars will race on ATS wheels while every manufacturer could opt for the wheel it preferred, in the past. After the first tests for the 2017 season, the drivers proved to be really happy with their new cars. “The changes made on the car are clearly noticeable – particularly the combination of less aero, more power and the new tyres,” said Mattias Ekström, the senior driver on the DTM grid, representative of all the DTM drivers. “As I see it we are heading in the right direction and I think we are going to have a lot of fun, this year”.

Mertes has been involved in motor racing for more than 40 years. For 26 years now, he has been responsible for sponsoring and marketing of the DTM, inter alia as board member of the DTM umbrella organisation ITR. As CEO of the Formel 3 Vermarktungs GmbH, he has been organising and promoting the FIA Formula 3 European Championship for many years. Mr Mertes, you have been working in the motor racing world for many years and know a lot of race series. What makes the FIA Formula 3 European Championship so special, from your point of view? “For young talents, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship has been the stepping stone to professional motor racing for more than 25 years – no matter if to Formula One, DTM or the WEC. No other series helped more young drivers advancing to the pinnacle of motor racing, with World Champions such as Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg having learned their trade in this series. The latest example is Lance Stroll who won the 2016 FIA Formula 3 European Championship title and secured a Williams Formula One seat for the 2017 season straight away. Thus, following the footsteps of Max Verstappen who advanced from Formula 3 to the pinnacle of motor racing in 2015 and celebrated impressive results from his Formula One debut season. The series is extremely professional and has maintained a familial atmosphere, nevertheless. And we as promoters are working hand in hand with the FIA to keep

on optimising the series while – at the same time – keeping the costs at a low level”. A good number of talented young drivers has already been announced to compete in the 2017 season. Is there a driver you already would call your favourite? “Although the entry period for the 2017 season only ends on March 17th, the entry list already features a far bigger number of drivers than last year at the same point in time. The quality of the starting grid is incredibly high and I expect a thrilling battle for both the team and the drivers’ titles. I believe that drivers who are contesting their second or third seasons, such as Maximilian Günther, Callum Ilott, Joel Eriksson or David Beckmann, will have particularly good chances. But we know from the past that you mustn’t underestimate the rookies. And it goes without saying that I am looking forward to the continuation of the fight between Mick Schumacher and Joey Mawson who both advanced to our series from Formula 4”. How many drivers do you expect to contest the 2017 season? “We expect to achieve a number of 20/22 drivers this season. Together with the FIA we have been working for years on optimising the series for teams and drivers and offering an attractive package. And while doing so we make sure that the series remains financially feasible and cost-efficient. Last year we have introduced a price money scheme for rookies, which has been extended to teams and drivers this year. This way we try –

in cooperation with the FIA – to help teams and drivers to fund their season, thus improving the professionalism and the quality of the series”. Could you please describe the cooperation with the FIA? “The commitment and the support of the FIA are exemplary. The FIA as governing body is responsible for all sporting, technical and safety relevant aspects of the sport, while we as promoters are in charge of the organisation and the commercial exploitation of the series. As some of the areas overlap, we are working closely together with our FIA colleagues in Geneva and Paris. The teams are also involved in various discussions”. Could you please tell us about the development in the series’ sponsoring area? “Here we could observe a positive trend. The interest in the series is enormous and never before during our pre-season preparation have we been in such a good position at this point in time. The series rights are virtually sold out and in the hands of top-quality partners”. You also are responsible for marketing and distributing the championship in the media. Could you already give us an indication in what countries moving images of Formula 3 will be available? “For the promotion of a race series, TV coverage is essential, as only TV coverage reaches a big enough audience to make the product interesting for sponsors. It already has been confirmed that we are going to continue our long-term partnerships with the TV stations n-tv

and Eurosport. n-tv once again will bring live coverage of every single race weekend while Eurosport, Eurosport 2 and Eurosport Asia will show a 30-minute magazine with race highlights, background features, technology stories and driver portraits following every race meeting. Further licence deals have already been signed for other European countries such as France, the Netherlands and the UK as well as with international broadcasters such as Fox, ESPN, DAZN and Motor Trend on Demand – this means that we are addressing viewers all around the world. The distribution of the international TV rights is running flat out and we are convinced that we will be able to bring in further renowned TV stations before the season kicks off. And it goes without saying that fans can once again watch all the races live via the free of charge live stream on the official FIA F3 website”. What do you expect from the coming season? “The quality of the teams and drivers that will contest the 2017 season is very high. So we can already look forward to exciting race meetings and a thrilling battle for the title. In 2017 we will be racing at 10 different circuits in eight different countries. Apart from the race meetings held in the DTM support programme we also will race as part of further top events where – just as in DTM – a perfect TV production is guaranteed. The quality of the TV production can be compared with Formula One. The major part of the races will be held at GP venues and the calendar will be completed by the two prestigious street races at the Norisring and in Pau. At the end of the day we provide a European tour that is second to none”.

The FIA Formula 3 European Championship has confirmed 20 cars in its application process for the 2017 season. It is only a few more weeks before the FIA F3 European Championship starting lights will be switched off for the first time this year – in mid-April at Silverstone. The drivers who will then compete at the British Grand Prix circuit represent a good mix of experienced F3 drivers and young, talented rookies. All five teams entered, Prema Powerteam, Hitech GP, Motopark, Van Amersfoort Racing and Carlin have registered four cars – the maximum amount as per the regulations

is expanding the Panamera family with the addition of a new body version: the Panamera Sport Turismo, recently celebrated its world première at the Geneva Motor Show 2017, where five different versions were on display: Panamera 4, Panamera 4S, Panamera 4S Diesel, Panamera 4 E-Hybrid and Panamera Turbo Based on the successful sports saloon, the new version once again makes a profound statement in the luxury segment with its unmistakeable design. At the same time, the Sport Turismo, with up to 404 kW/550 hp, is more versatile than any other model in its class. With a large tailgate, low loading edge, increased luggage compartment volume and a 4+1 seating concept, the new Panamera model offers the perfect combination of everyday usability and maximum flexibility. From a technological and design perspective, the Sport Turismo utilises all the innovations introduced with the brand new Panamera model line launched only last year. These include the digital Porsche Advanced Cockpit, pioneering assistance systems such as Porsche InnoDrive, including adaptive cruise control, chassis systems such as rear axle steering, the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC Sport) electronic roll stabilisation system and powerful powertrains.

In addition, all Panamera Sport Turismo vehicles are equipped with Porsche Traction Management (PTM) – an active all-wheel drive system with electronically controlled multi-plate clutch – as standard. As for the S models, adaptive air suspension with three-chamber technology is also supplied as standard. THE DESIGN AND CONCEPT OF AN ALL-ROUND SPORTSCAR Just like the coupé-style Panamera sports saloon, the Sport Turismo is characterised by its very dynamic proportions – a perfect reflection of the Porsche design DNA. The vehicle is 5,049 millimetres long, 1,428 millimetres high and 1,937 millimetres wide, while the large wheelbase spans 2,950 millimetres. The silhouette is further characterised by short body overhangs and large wheels measuring up to 21 inches. Beginning from the B-pillars, that is, from the start of the rear doors, the Sport Turismo features a completely unique rear design. Above the pronounced shoulder, an elongated window line and equally long roof contour lend the vehicle its striking appearance. At the rear, the roof drops away much less dramatically than the window line, resulting in a prominent and distinctive D-pillar which transitions into the shoulder section in a coupé-like fashion.

FIRST ADAPTIVELY EXTENDIBLE ROOF SPOILER IN THE SEGMENT At the top of the vehicle, the roof extends into an adaptive spoiler. The angle of the roof spoiler is set in three stages depending on the driving situation and selected vehicle settings, and generates an additional downforce of up to 50 kg on the rear axle. Up to a speed of 170 km/h, the aerodynamic guide element – a central system component of the Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA) – stays in its retracted position with an angle of minus seven degrees, which reduces drag and thus optimises fuel consumption. Above 170 km/h, the roof spoiler automatically moves to the performance position with an angle of plus one degree, thereby increasing driving stability and lateral dynamics. When in the Sport and Sport Plus driving modes, the roof spoiler automatically moves to the performance position at speeds of 90 km/h upwards. PAA also provides active assistance by adapting the roof spoiler’s angle of inclination to plus 26 degrees when the panoramic sliding roof is open at a speed of 90 km/h or above. In this case, the spoiler helps to minimise wind noise.

THREE SEATS IN REDESIGNED REAR The new Sport Turismo is the first Panamera to feature three rear seats. The two outside seats take the form of individual seats – in keeping with the model line’s claim for sporty performance with maximum passenger comfort – thereby producing a 2+1 configuration at the rear. As an option, the Panamera Sport Turismo is also available in a four-seat configuration with two electrically adjustable individual seats at the rear. The raised roof line of the Sport Turismo allows for easier entry and exit at the rear of the vehicle and ensures greater head clearance. The usability of the luggage compartment benefits from the wide opening tailgate, which is electrically operated as standard, and a loading edge height of just 628 millimetres. Measured to the upper edge of the rear seats, the up to 520-litre storage capacity of the Sport Turismo (Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo: 425 litres) betters that of the sports saloon by 20 litres. When loaded up to roof level and with the rear seats folded down, the gains amount to around 50 litres. The backrests of the three rear seats can be folded down together or individually (in a 40:20:40 split) and are unlocked electrically from the luggage

compartment. When all of the backrests are folded down, the loading floor is virtually level. In this case, the storage volume is expanded to up to 1,390 litres (Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo: 1,295 litres). A luggage compartment management system is available on request for the Panamera Sport Turismo. Among other things, this variable system for secure transport includes two rails integrated in the loading floor, four lashing points and a luggage compartment partition net. An optional 230-V electrical socket can also be provided in the luggage compartment. FIVE ENGINES AT MARKET LAUNCH The new Porsche will be available with five engines that are already used in the sports saloon. Prices in Germany start at EUR 97,557 for the Panamera 4 Sport Turismo (243 kW/330 hp), EUR 112,075 for the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Sport Turismo (340 kW/462 hp system power), EUR 120,048 for the Panamera 4S Sport Turismo (324 kW/440 hp), EUR 123,975 for the Panamera 4S Diesel Sport Turismo (310 kW/422 hp) and EUR 158,604 for the Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo (404 kW/550 hp), all including VAT.

1967 Austin Healey 3000 MK III, the very last series production car that rolled off the line at the Abingdon factory, is on sale as part of CCA’s two-day mega sale at the Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show on Sunday 2nd April.

Created by the highly respected team from Silverstone Auctions, Classic Car Auctions is a specialist auction house for the sale of ‘everyman’ classic cars. Holding regular sales at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre, CCA will offer enthusiasts the opportunity to buy an impressive selection of iconic classic cars

Chassis Number HBJ843025 was produced on the 21st December 1967 and first registered to the Donald Healey Motor Company in Warwick with the registration number OAC 656. It went through two more registered keepers in the Leicester area before the current vendor purchased the car in 1972, cherishing it for the last 45 years. This BJ8 is an original, right-hand drive manual car that has covered 56,000 miles in 50 years. The car benefitted from a fresh restoration just one year ago and was subject to a bare metal respray in Golden Beige Metallic. The car is estimated at between £75,000 and £90,000 when it goes under the hammer at the NEC, Birmingham. Speaking ahead of the auction, classic car specialist at CCA, Richard Greenhalgh, said: “This has got to be the most significant, ‘road going’ Big Healey on the market today and as such represents an amazing opportunity for classic car collectors. The car has great shutlines, a deep shine and lots of detail. This is the first time the car has been offered for sale in over 40 years and as such an important and iconic British sports car we expect a significant amount of interest”. The car also comes complete with a large history file, documentation and a Heritage Certificate confirming its status as the final ‘’Big Healey’ ever built.

classic 1948 Jaguar sports saloon, first owned by Arthur Whittaker, the Deputy Chairman of Jaguar Cars, has been re­united with his family 67 years after he parted with it. During Historics at Brooklands classic car auction in Surrey on Saturday, 4th March, Whittaker’s four granddaughters – Lucy, Sally, Sarah and Charlotte - who discovered the car’s impending sale purely by chance a fortnight earlier ­ fought off rival bidders to make it their own, settling on £70,000 for the jet black classic. It will return to the eldest granddaughter Lucy’s family home in Kenilworth, just miles from the former Jaguar factory in Brown’s Lane, Coventry where it was originally manufactured 69 years ago. “Once we discovered grandad’s Jaguar was for sale, we just had to go and see it”, said Sally. “We had no intention of buying it,

but sitting in it before the sale brought back so many fond memories of family outings in his cars that we decided we just had to bid for it,” she continued. “We’d never bought a thing at auction before, but were determined to take it home if we could afford to,” added her sister Lucy. “It was all a bit of a whirlwind and suddenly, the hammer came down and it was ours.” After Whittaker parted with the car in 1950, it passed through the hands of a number of owners before a complete, meticulous restoration started in 1982 by the owner of the day. Twenty two years later the car was finally completed, latterly by classic Jaguar specialist, David Davenport, returning it to its spectacular condition that remains today. A supreme tourer in its day, Whittaker’s car was one of the last to be produced. It was specially trimmed in pigskin hide, complementing the stately burr walnut dashboard and fittings, and left the Brown’s Lane production line complete with a rare sunroof. Powered by a silky smooth 3.5 litre six-­ cylinder engine, the Jaguar Mk IV is revered for its graceful lines and magnificent presence, dominated by huge dinner plate headlamps flanking the imposing chrome radiator. Will it become a museum piece?...Not if Whittaker’s granddaughters have their way. “It’s just too lovely to leave locked away. The plan is to share enjoyment of the car amongst all our families, including grandad’s seven great grandchildren. I’m sure that’s what he would have wanted too. All we need now is the picnic hamper and a bit of sun!”
