B R I E F, CONTEXT & USER GROUPS The client is a student accommodation owner and developer, looking for a second purpose for their accommodations during the times of year their buildings are not occupied by students. The client is imagining the second use for the building as a hotel for short time visitors. The client is therefore looking for an element that would make the process of adapting the rooms quick and easy. They also wish that the element makes the rooms more accessible to a broader user group and that it gives a sense of luxury that would attract people to stay at the hotel.

The student accommodations are planned to have single beds, but the client believes that if the rooms had double beds when used as a hotel, it would enhance the sense of luxury and make the rooms feel more like a hotel environment. The rooms would therefore attract more visitors and be able to accommodate more people. Accommodation owners also want the element to be able to provide two single beds for the rooms to give the hotel rooms more variety and reach a broader range of visitors.

The element would therefore have two User Types: User Type 1

User Type 1 is a student, on average 18 - 25 years old. User Type 1 would be the main user of the element, using it in their everyday lives. This user group requires a proper workstation, and good storage possibilities. They also need to feel comfortable leaving items in the room if they are returning to the same room after it’s been used as a hotel.

User Type 2

User Type 2 is a hotel guest and could therefore be of any age and could have special requirements that needs to be considered. Depending on the guest, User Type 2 would need a room with either one double bed, one single bed or two single beds. User Type 2 also needs to feel like they’re staying in a hotel and not be able to see any objects belonging to students.

In response to the brief the proposed element is looking at the students’ workstations and how they can be adapted. This is because these usually take up a lot of space in the student rooms and are not necessarily needed when the rooms would be used as hotel facilities.

G R O O V E GROOVE is a modular shelving system built up of 900x600x2400mm units that can host a wardrobe module, an open shelves module and a drawer module. The shelving is customizable to suit the user’s needs. All the drawers are lockable and can therefore store any valuable items safely.

GROOVE provides a clever solution to the brief with its optional addition of The GROOVE Desk.

The GROOVE desk can slide both horizontally and vertically through the system along the lit up feature shelf and through the characteristic grooves in the units. This means that the desk can be adapted to a fully functioning 900x2000mm single bed or can be combined with existing single bed to create a 1800x2000mm Super King Sized bed.

The GROOVE Desk is also provided with a lamp that is used as a desk lamp when the element is used as a workstation and is then adapted to a bedside lamp when the element is used as a bed. The light is dimmable in order to suit the different uses and cater to different users’ needs.

GROOVE focuses on sustainability and is made using minimal amounts of different materials in order for the unit to be easily recyclable at end of life. The main material used is Bamboo which, with its fast regrowth capabilities and low carbon footprint, is one of the most environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional hardwood today. Bamboo is also a robust and durable material which makes it the perfect basis for the GROOVE system.
