GLISSON CAMP & RETREAT CENTER CHAPEL EXPANSION NORTH GEORGIA CAMP & RETREAT MINISTRIES DAHLONEGA, GA | Glisson Camp & Retreat Center was founded in 1925. With attendance increasing, the decision was made to expand the existing (and much beloved) historic chapel. This project entailed preserving as much of the existing 1940s-era chapel as possible, while renovating and expanding it. The expansion removed three existing walls, extended one end, and then encapsulated it with glass. Architect Garland Reynolds noted that this project was, “one of the greatest challenges I ever had as an architect,” and a lot of design elements had to be worked out in the field, including: adding HVAC, matching existing 75-year-old finishes, meeting unexpected code challenges, and battling adverse weather. The team also needed to manage the job in the heart of an active campus, with limited laydown and access.
