Editor’s Letter Dear Readers,

N

o sooner does a year come to an end and a New Year dawns, it’s time for auto magazines to rush in with their awards. Almost every vehicle and every vehicle manufacturer gets an award in some pretext or the other. It’s interesting to see all the men and women from the industry dressed in their dapper suits crowding around the stage with awards in their hands. At Car N Style and Motown India, we have yet to be convinced that awards are not a hogwash exercise. Maybe we shall succumb to this exercise out of sheer desperation some day! We believe in giving our readers interesting news to read. Journalism is about being a catalyst, ensuring that good news reaches the discerning audience. With that in mind we have some of the latest news wrapped up for our readers in the latest issue of Car N Style magazine. Tutu’s fine tunes

Restoring old Beetles is now a craze R.K. Dhawan (Tutu)

V

olkswagen may have temporarily stopped importing new Beetle cars into India, but not many are aware that this car is much in demand in every form possible. Old and broken down Beetle cars of yesteryears which have been rusteaten are being restored, refurbished and modernised for those with deep pockets and a penchant for this German common man’s car. But it’s not the common man who is restoring these cars. People from affluent backgrounds in India have caught the fancy of this small car and are rushing to car restorers like me to have their Beetles restored. I have restored innumerable number of Beetle cars in my life. You may not believe, I have restored cars that have been in absolute run down state… no panels, no bodies, missing parts etc. Despite this, I have restored these cars back to their immaculate selves, with much more than what was originally fitted in the vehicles. You can get in touch with me for restoring your Beetle. Beetle parts are available in places like California in the US and in the UK. One can buy the parts on the net and the parts get delivered at your doorstep. People have also fitted powerful engines into the Beetles that they have restored. Abroad, old Beetles are revamped, engines souped up and then driven even on tracks. There are Beetle clubs where owners of restored Beetles come together and share their experiences. In India, the craze to restore a Beetle is catching up. Old and battered Beetles are available for as low as 3 lakh to 8 lakh

6 / Car N Style / February 2013

and people spend anywhere between 4 lakh to 20 lakh to restore it with the latest fitments. I am sure all of you know the genesis of the Beetle. In 1933, Adolf Hitler asked Ferdinand Porsche to develop a “people’s car” in German that should have the basic capability of transporting two adults and three children at 100 km/h (62 mph). The “People’s Car” was available to citizens of the ‘Third Reich’ through a savings scheme. In 1931 Ferdinand Porsche had already developed the Porsche Type 12, a car for everybody for Zündapp. He preferred the flat-four air cooled engine and selected the

‘independent suspension swing axle’ rear suspension. In 1932, three prototypes were made and running. All these cars were lost during World War II, the last in a bombing raid on Stuttgart. Finally the ‘air-cooled Beetle’ arrived on the scene. This was the most advanced design of its time. The uniqueness of it was the compact and simple engineering that put all the nuts and bolts together to give to the world one of the most fuel efficient car and one with the least maintenance.

Of these, the first Beetles arrived on American soil in 1949 of which only two were sold for $1280 each. But by 1960 VW had started building 4,000 Beetles a day and had exported worldwide via 68 VW-owned cargo ships. In 1968, VW sold 399,674 Beetles in America alone. But the boom lasted till 1977 and then the newly designed water-cooled engine got introduced. Amazingly, the old air-cooled rear-engined Beetle is still manufactured today for Third World countries. More than 22,000,000 Beetles have rolled off the assembly line at VW’s huge plant in Puebla, Mexico. In the mid 60’s this car became the world’s number one seller and today again this vehicle is back in demand by crazy car collectors, in whatever condition. By design this car had a very compact water tight monocoque body that could float on water the longest as the passenger compartment was virtually sealed till somebody would open the doors. World over ‘Air-cooled VW’s Clubs’ have mushroomed where likeminded old and the young get together to have a week-end of great camaraderie and show to the world their prize possession. Here they compare notes and discuss options for the extra bits that can now be added with advanced technology being available off the shelf. Various websites and garages specialising in upgrading and restoring the air cooled VW’s have sprung up that include their Panel and Kombi busses and vans. The Beetle fever is spreading like a viral.

Advantage Bajaj Husqvarna Motorcycles is sold to KTM owner

T

here is lot of action in the motorcycle business with India’s Bajaj Auto benefitting in a roundabout manner. The BMW Group is realigning its BMW Motorrad business. It has sold its Husqvarna Motorcycles business to Pierer Industrie AG (Austria). The latter is owned by Stefan Pierer, CEO of KTM. Again, around 47pc of KTM equity is owned by Rahul Bajaj controlled Bajaj Auto. According to highly placed sources, it is a matter of time before the Husqvarna brand too gets to see the Indian landscape. The acquisition of Husqvarna by Pierer will proceed subject to approval by antitrust authorities. Both companies have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. Husqvarna Motorcycles has been part of the BMW Group since October 1, 2007 and was able to rely on BMW Motorrad as a powerful partner at its side in every respect. Today there are some 260 staff working at the company headquarters in Cassinetta di Biandronno in northern Italy and the model range currently includes 26 motorcycles in the enduro, motocross, 125 and road segments. What is more, Husqvarna offers an extensive range of accessories, rider equipment and merchandising. Husqvarna re-entered the road bike segment in 2011 with the presentation of the Husqvarna Nuda 900 and Husqvarna Nuda 900 R models. These models, developed in collaboration with BMW Motorrad, likewise display Husqvarna’s typical pure, athletic and dynamic styling. The brand most recently provided a look ahead to further extension of the model range with the Husqvarna Concept MOAB, Husqvarna Concept Strada and Husqvarna Concept BAJA studies. With the new Husqvarna TR 650 Strada and TR 650 Terra, Husqvarna Motorcycles continues its model offensive that began in 2011 with the successful launch of its road models.

Bollywood is smiling, so is the Ironman

B

Report: Abhijeet Singh ollywood and fast cars have a lot in common. Both make heads turn. But when both come together, it sets the tracks on fire. It’s not just Ironman who does that all by himself. That’s what happened when the Audi R8 was launched at the Audi showroom in New Delhi. Bollywood stars from the Hindi movie ‘Race 2’ got together and crowded around a red coloured R8 at the showroom, leaving excited shutter bugs ample time to click feverishly till their batteries ran out. Audi has given its usable sports car a subtle makeover. The new car was launched in the presence of Saif Ali Khan, Ameesha Patel and Deepika Padukone in Audi’s Delhi showroom. Michael Perschke, Head of Audi India unveiled the car. THE HEART Audi R8 is equipped with a 4.2 litre V8 producing 430hp and a 5.2 litre V10 engine churning out 525hp. The Audi R8 V8 combined with the seven-speed S tronic gearbox accelerates to 100kmph in 4.3seconds and the acceleration stops at 300kmph. The Audi R8 V10 coupled with S tronic reaches the ton mark in 3.6seconds and on to a top speed of 314kmph.The new S tronic replaces the R tronic gearbox which improves acceleration by 0.3pc. For those who fancy an open top motoring experience get ready to touch 100kmph in 3.8seconds, and a hair bashing top speed of 311kmph. As a fact the V10 engine has been lifted from R8’s sibling Lamborghini Gallardo, although detuned to make it more civilised. The new R8 also promises better fuel efficiency than its predecessors.

www.carnstyle.com

Power is delivered to the wheels by Audi’s legendary Quattro permanent four wheel drive system, thus providing the safety to extract the most out of this machine. Normally it feels like a two wheel drive car but when you overstep the mark, the four wheel drive system pulls you out of trouble. Partly it is also down to the vehicle’s lightweight aluminum construction. In the process of this makeover Audi’s engineers have chopped off roughly 50kilograms on the top variant of this already light sports car. Special attention has been taken to keep the weight of the electro-hydraulic soft top down as well. THE BEAUTY Ever since its introduction in 2006, the Audi R8 has been one of the prettiest super cars around. For the 2013 model Audi has raised the appeal further. The redesigned all-LED headlights and taillights are standard across the entire range now. The rear tail lights get a new feature called dynamic turn signals. The signals turn inside out in the direction the driver is turning. The grille and diffuser have been redesigned for this new model. The big round tail

pipes look extremely attractive and sound incredible. The shift paddles behind the steering have been increased in size for better control of the gearbox for enthusiastic driving. The interiors are subtle and of very high quality. Audi R8 is reputed as a practical super car, and it is true. It actually has a boot enough for two, although we suggest pack light for the trip. The Audi R8 is a supercar which provides all supercar pros with none of the supercar cons. It is beautiful to behold, easy to drive, fuel efficient, practical as well and it will keep you out of the ditch when you poke it with a stick. The prices range from 1.34crore for the base V8 coupe to 1.73crore for the top of the line V10 Spyder variant. And with the recent facelift Audi has made it more appealing for the rich and successful. Well Ironman is happy, thank you Audi…Bollywood, as usual, is happy too!

The Statesman, an English language daily published in Kolkata, Bhubaneshwar and New Delhi, has been organising the event annually and brings car aficionados together over a weekend every year and affords them a trip down memory lane. There was a 1938 Adler too and the story goes that the car was buried in the garden to prevent it from being commandeered during the war but was excavated and restored after the war was over. The rally started with a grand parade around the stadium and before heading out on the route the cars did the “wiggle-woggle” – a slalom to test the manoeuvrability of the cars and the driver’s car control through it. t’s a crisp winter morning and we arrive at a truly world class racing facility, the Budh International Circuit (BIC). Tata Motors wants to unveil the new Vista D90 at the BIC and wants to give the national press a taste of this vehicles performance and abilities. The event allowed us to experience a hot lap with a professional racing driver and then go for a pedal to the metal lap ourselves. Tata also organised a short circuit including slalom, a braking test and rough patch ride to test the vehicles dynamics on daily roads.

The Vista D90 starts impressing right when you first set your eyes upon it. The new fascia includes a sporty front and rear bumper, a new aerodynamic spoiler, contrast roof and 14” alloys. Tata has based this car on the three pillars of power, performance and technology. The 1248cc engine belts out 88.7bhp of peak power at 4000rpm and 200Nm of torque thanks to the Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) which also smoothens power delivery. With the Euro-tech 2 gearbox mated to this engine the car quickly attains the ton in

15.5seconds on to a top speed of 158kmph. The engine itself is quite responsive and so are the handling dynamics of the vehicle. Apart from all the thrilling performance it also returns a modest 21.12kmpl. On the comfort front Tata ensures that they have shod it with first-in class features and tech. The cabin has been optimised for maximum space and freshened up with dual tone interiors, black and beige in contrast. The instrument cluster has been focused towards the driver. Beginning 2013, prices of diesel will be increasing by Re 1 every month for the next few months, thereby bridging the gap between the prices of petrol and diesel. Despite this gap coming down in terms of pricing of both the fuels, this diesel engine is expected to offer a clear advantage to the consumers.

ybrid has a new connotation now. Hybrid Air. Starting 2016, there could be cars that could be run on petrol and air combined! Guillaume Faury, Executive Vice President of Research & Development at PSA Peugeot Citroën, welcomed 100 business and political decision makers, partners and journalists to the Group’s Automotive Design Network (ADN) R&D centre in Vélizy, France for its Innovation Day. The Group organised a worldpremiere presentation of a revolutionary technology called Hybrid Air, a petrol and compressed air full-hybrid solution. PSA Peugeot Citroën is developing

an all-new technology combining Gasoline internal combustion engine and compressed air storage. “Hybrid Air” is a key step in the path toward fuel consumption of 2 l/100 km (that means 50km to a litre of petrol!). The major innovation lies in the way the powertrain adapts to driving styles, adjusting independently to one of three modes: Air, Gasoline, Combined. Hybrid Air technology will be fitted on B-segment models starting in 2016. The technology involves a new type of full hybrid powertrain that uses petrol and compressed air. It is an innovative combination of tried and tested technologies: a petrol engine, a unit to store energy in the form of compressed air, a hydraulic motor-pump assembly and an automatic transmission working with an epicyclic gear train. The smart control system adapts the operating mode to the driver’s commands and optimises energy efficiency in three different modes: ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle), petrol internal combustion and combined.

For those who are neither content with premium bikes in the 250cc segments, nor can afford superbikes in the 1000cc+segments, here is a breather. Honda Motor Company is reportedly considering to foray into the underpenetrated middleweight segment (500cc) in the Indian twowheeler market by launching CBR 500R. It is to be mentioned that early last year at the EICMA show in Milan, Honda announced the CBR500R (sport), CB500F (naked) and CB500X (adventure-style) motorcycles. However sources have revealed that only CBR 500R, which appears to be a compact motorcycle and has styling cues borrowed both from the bigger Fireblade CBR10000RR as well as the entry level CBR250R, is expected to be launched in India. According to sources, “HMSI is passively considering the CBR500R for the fast growing Indian motorcycle market, which is witnessing unprecedented growth in the high- end performance motorcycle category. It will also appeal to experienced riders looking for a great value alternative to larger sports bikes and should be equipped with ABS as standard.”

The Renault Captur will be easy to customise and notably comes with an original two-tone colour scheme which produces an attractive contrast between the roof and pillars and the rest of the body work. The Renault Captur is based on the same platform as the new Clio, acclaimed as a B-segment benchmark when it comes to driving pleasure. It consequently delivers best-level dynamics, from road holding to engine response and agile handling. The petrol and diesel engines available for the model benefit from the very latest Renault technologies and will return best-in-class fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, starting from as low as 96g/km.

Mercedes bets big on CLA compact saloon Report: Avishek Banerjee

O

n the sidelines of inaugurating its mega showroom in Delhi, Mercedes Benz India has said that it is quite upbeat on the upcoming CLA, which is expected to be launched by Auto Expo’14. The compact saloon, which has already been unveiled at the 2013 North America International Auto Show (NAIAS), will be positioned above the A-Class (expected this year) and below the C-Class. In India and other countries, the all-new model will be taking on the Audi A3 and the BMW 1 Series compact saloons. While the CLA’s variants will mainly be available with a front wheel drive layout in India, select international markets will get an all wheel drive model. The brand new car, which is built on the MFA platform, will be available in both petrol and diesel versions. The German luxury carmaker is targeting younger buyers seeking to enter the three pointed star brand with this model, the price range of the models is expected to be above 25 lakh. When Mercedes Benz India Managing Director and CEO Eberhard H. Kern was

queried by this correspondent, he said, “Such a model has a lot of potential in India as it’s an unexplored segment. We can expect this to be available only by next year.” As a new four-door coupé, it follows the idea of the CLS, whose design concept has spawned more than its fair share of imitators since its debut in 2003. With its frameless doors, the coupé adopts the design of the Concept Style Coupé into series production. Sources have revealed that the Mercedes Benz CLA will be assembled in India from completely knocked down (CKD) kits at the Chakan facility. The car will share its assembly line with the A-Class and B-Class hatchbacks, with a plenty of common parts. Meanwhile, Mercedes Benz India is gearing up to launch the A-Class hatchback this year which will be priced in the range of 18-22 lakh. Apart from the diesel-powered B-Class, the company will also be launching new GL and facelifted E-Class within this calendar year. Eberhard said that the company

supports industry body SIAM’s standpoint on not including automobile sector in the proposed Indo-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Conversely, Mercedes Benz India may earmark its facility at Chakan, Maharashtra as an export destination if such agreements are inked. He also maintained that the company’s Rs. 850 crore investment plans until next year for expanding the production capacity and introducing new models are very much on track. “In our global roadmap, India is one of the most important strategic markets. Looking at the size of the market and number of young people, India will become a big market for us in future,” Kern said.

anuary 10, 2013 was no ordinary day. On that day Hennessey Performance (HPE) announced that its street-legal Venom GT supercar accelerated from 0-300 km/h in just 13.63 seconds. In the process, the vehicle set a new record, according to Guinness World Records. The acceleration time was an average of two runs made in opposite directions within one hour and validated by a VBox 3i GPSbased data logging system. VBox officials were on hand to certify the numbers as required by Guinness rules. The first run was completed in 13.18 seconds with a 4 mph tailwind. The second run was made in 14.08 seconds while encountering a 6 mph headwind. The resulting two-way 0-300 km/h average was 13.63 seconds. “We are exceptionally proud of our team at HPE who helped to make this new Guinness World Record possible,” said

company founder and President, John Hennessey. “This is just the first of several validation tests designed to show the world what our special car is all about – being the fastest. Period.” The acceleration runs were conducted at Ellington Airport (also used by NASA) located southeast of Houston, Texas, using the seventh production Venom GT — a street-legal car that makes use of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup DOT-approved radial tyres, 93-octane pump fuel, and a full interior replete with high-end stereo, air conditioning, and bespoke leather / Alcantara seats. Powered by a 7.0-litre (427 cubic inch) V-8 engine fed by twin Precision turbochargers, the Venom GT produces 1,244 horsepower and 1,155 lb-ft of torque. In India, not may owners of such expensive cars put their cars to such tests, the way we did on a land tucked away among some hills in the outskirts of Delhi in Faridabad. Boy, this car let’s you know what technology is. We took turns driving this performance SUV through hurdles as bad as deep

I got to drive the 2 litre TDFSI petrol engine. The car also comes with two different 2 litre and 3 litre diesel TDI engines. There is not much to talk about the looks of the new Audi Q5. Damn it, it’s good looking... it’s got a sporty SUV body with a sharper profile. Hey, how would I

sound if I went up to John Abraham and told him he looked handsome and that he had great muscles! It’s obvious man, it’s OBVIOUS! The interiors in the new Q5 have been further refined. Customers can now choose from two interior colours. Everything inside looks classy, from the new leathercovered multifunction steering wheel in 4-spoke design with controls that have chrome rings, to the inner fascia, all styled in high-gloss black. The new car also comes with a driver assistance system. If it detects that the driver’s concentration is waning, it recommends a break from driving! We were as alert as an owl in a dark night, so

this feature made no sense to us, adrenalin rushed through our veins like flooded waters of Brahmaputra. Engine & Technology Both the diesel engines and the petrol engine come with direct fuel injection and turbo charging. The 1984cc petrol engine delivers 225bhp of power between 4500 to 6200rpm and a maximum torque of 350Nm between 1500rpm to 4500rpm. It has Quattro permanent all-wheel drive with self-locking centre differential with torque vectoring, electronic stabilisation control and an 8-speed tiptronic with DSP and sport programme. While the diesel variants

produce more torque 380Nm for the 2 litre one, and 580Nm for the 3 litre one, the power is a trifle low in the 2 litre TDI (177bhp) and a shade higher in the 3 litre TDI (245bhp). It’s obvious that the new car has better tuning, a new electromechanical power steering and more precise steering response at higher speeds. All you have got to do is some sensible driving and then you are sure to experience the technology behind the new Q5. If you think you cannot drive sensibly, then get yourself a chauffeur and ask him to behave while you enjoy being driven in the lap of luxury.

Can he ride a monstrous 1585cc machine without at least stalling it for a moment? As I got on to the giant machine and twisted the knob mounted on the petrol tank, the engine roared to life. The sound was distinct, loud and majestic. I changed gears and rode through the concrete jungle surrounding me. All heads turned to admire the bike. The bike had more than its share of chrome

all over. The imposing engine, the wide handle bars, the massive tear drop tank and the smart twin exhaust, all enhance the style quotient of the bike. Adding to the aesthetic appeal is the tank-mounted electronic speedometer with odometer, time-of-day clock on odometer and gauges that display loads of information.

POWER & PERFORMANCE

The 1585cc engine is mated to a six-speed gear box. As I sped towards Faridabad the only thing that tried stopping me was the wind that hit against my chest. You have

got to have a pair of strong hands on equally strong shoulders to ride this bike. The bike oozes power in every gear. The air cooled twin cam engine never seems to tire. Mounted on mammoth Michelin tyres, the Super Glide with its 120mm ground clearance is a giant piece of engineering marvel. It’s not the money alone that will get you this bike; you have actually got to “earn it”.

The Mini convertible is a small car with a very big appeal. You look at the car from any angle, and it is adoringly appealing. Be it its shape, its alloy wheels, its interiors or its performance. The only time you pause is when you hear its price, a whopping 30 lakh plus on the road. It’s like Tom Cruise, if you get what I mean!

LOOKS & FEEL

Unlike the Beetle which can be a tad feminine or the Fiat 500 which is kind of boring, the Mini convertible is cute, yet muscular to look at. (Its 16-inch alloys have a lot to do with that). The broad white stripes running along the hood give the car a distinct, yet elegant look. It adds to the sporty appearance of the vehicle. Once you get into the vehicle, it’s like getting into a cockpit of a plane. The switches remind you that this is different from the rest of the breed. There is also a light adjustment button that changes the ambience light to perk up

your romantic inclinations.

POWER & PERFORMANCE

Though it is a 1.6 litre engine, it seems to be a powerful one for a small car. But while doing the tracking shots, I felt that there is a huge turbo lag. The car took a considerable amount of time to surge ahead despite the persistent acceleration. But once you keep flooring the accelerator, the vehicle picks up speed and zooms without any hiccups. The convertible’s 1.6-litre engine puts out 122 hp and generates 160 Nm of torque. On Delhi’s roads, the car seemed a bit noisy. Was it a worn out suspension or was the car not able to take the bad roads with ease? On smooth roads, the drive improved considerably. At high speeds the car’s handling is exceptionally precise and responsive.

Like a cockpit, the aircraft-style flip switches feel superb and operating it makes you feel like a pilot. Though the car is a four-seater, it’s best to travel two in this car. The back seats are too cramped for two adults to be seated. As for the luggage, it can be tucked at the back. The boot lid is kind of cute, and the space just enough for a bit of luggage.

Interior features include leather wrapped steering wheel, chrome-plated elliptical door handles, Harmon Kardon audio system and a large speedometer that stares at you like a clock on the wall. With four air bags, the safety of the passengers is taken care of. For the rich man, this is a car to go out for a date!

INTERIORS & SAFETY FEATURES

The interiors of the car as I mentioned earlier are a treat to experience. The large speedometer in the centre of the dash board looks appealing. It gives a retro look.

Goa to Hampi in a MINI Text & pics Murad Ali Baig If you are doing 100kmph in a big Merc it feels like a Sunday Picnic but if you do 100 kmph in a Mini Cooper you really feel you are flying and the Mini Cooper S is the ultimate in fun cars. The standard Mini delivers a peppy 120hp from a 1600cc petrol engine while the Mini S is tuned to pump out a huge 181hp. It was therefore a rare pleasure to drive a Mini Cooper S on perhaps the most pleasurable 1200km test drive I can remember from Goa to the ruins of Hampi and back over lovely twisty `ghat’ roads and some good highways. The Mini is roughly the size of the Maruti Swift, but packed with every modern feature for performance and comfort.

Travel Goa is a very pleasant and laid back destination for many Delhi citizens who try to escape the cold of winter or the heat of the monsoons. But most visitors do not see much more than the beaches, discos and restaurants. We therefore first drove to the sixteenth century Reis Magos fort overlooking the Mandovi River opposite Panjim. The Goa Government with INTACH has just done it up to make a wonderful exhibition about Goa’s history illustrated with evocative pictures by the late Mario Miranda. From the battlements of the Citadel one can see how the battery of ancient canons used to command the estuary. We were warned that the roads on the usual route from Goa to Hampi was in bad shape so we headed north on NH 17 towards Mumbai and then headed west on a lovely winding road via the minor hill station of Amboli to get to Hubli from where NH 63 got us straight to Hospet close to the ruins of Hampi. In a fast and nimble car the 450km journey took just nine effortless hours and we arrived fresh and exhilarated by the drive. Guided by friends we stayed at a very comfortable resort run by the Kishkinda Trust that is located on the far side of the pretty Tungabadra River. A small coracle took us to across the river to see some wonderful rock carvings scattered among the rocks. Many pilgrims also come to Hampi as legend has it that the Hampi area was the launching pad for Ram’s final attack on Lanka as it was the home of Hanuman and many other characters of the epic Ramayana. Hampi is a truly magical place to visit. The ruins of the sixteenth century capital of the Vijayanagar Empire built with huge granite blocks, pillars and beams set among a huge collection of tumbled rocks are truly awe inspiring. European visitors described it as the most magnificent city in the world during its heyday. The fortifications set among the tumbled rocks would have been unassailable but the rulers foolishly challenged the Adilshahi rulers on the open plains and were routed. The city was then utterly destroyed. We returned via the port of Karwar south of Goa on another wonderful hilly road. The little 2-door car was great in the two front seats but distinctly cramped in the rear. The 181hp engine was very docile at low revs but pumped out instant acceleration when the pedal was pushed. The six-speed automatic also made it effortless to drive but there were also paddle shift for those who like to use gears. Our average fuel consumption was also a very acceptable 15kmpl on the 1200km journey. Despite its huge 17 inch low profile tires the ground clearance was a slight problem but the ride, handling and steering was superb. The car came loaded with almost everything one could desire in entertainment, climate control, parking sensors, etc. The `retro’ look instrument panel with round dials and chrome buttons and trim was also very pleasing. Facing the driver was a big RPM counter inside which was a small digital display showing the speed. The on board computer in the centre console gave all other data on distance covered, fuel consumption, distance to empty, etc. Paradoxically the Mini began life in 1959 as a compact economy car but is today, at 30 Lakhs, a rich man’s fun car. It is however a real jewel on wheels.

Chasing Tigers Anamit Sen dashes down to Bandhavgarh in search of wildlife over a long weekend

I

t started with a phone call from my cousin – a long weekend was coming up and he really didn’t want to spend it sitting in Delhi NCR. If I could organise a car, preferably a diesel-powered one, we could head out somewhere for those three days. So I went across to his place to brainstorm about destinations, routes and the ideal car. During the very first session, his brother heard us discussing the trip and immediately wanted to join in. With the number of passengers decided, we turned our thoughts to the destination. Wildlife, my cousin insisted...Tigers!! While I immediately thought of destinations close to Delhi, like Sariska, Corbett and Ranthambhor somebody suggested Bandhavgarh and the idea stuck. Which was when we decided to take the help of Google Maps and as many guide books as we could lay our hands on.

Tiger spotters

Last 8km to Bandhavgarh

50 / Car N Style / February 2013

Pench, I said after pouring over several maps...it’s Kipling country where you have Baloo, Bagheera and Sher Khan. It was not that far from Bandhavgarh... We could do one night there and one night in Bandhavgarh. Then I noticed that the Panna WLS is en route to Bandhavgarh.. my father used to go on shikaars to Panna in his youth. It would be fun to follow in his footsteps, I would be shooting too

but with my DSLR. This notion was not received very enthusiastically however – both brothers wanted to do Bandhavgarh properly, go on as many safaris as possible in all the zones. The reasons for choosing Bandhavgarh eventually over the rest were several but the most important reason was the fact that Bandhavgarh is especially well known for its high density of big cats, i.e. tigers and leopards. This is in addition to the usual assortment of chital or spotted deer, sambar deer, nilgai or blue bulls, wild boar as well as rhesus macaque monkeys, black-faced langur, jungle cats, hyenas and much more. According to MP Tourism,

www.carnstyle.com

Travel

Gateway to Tala Bandhavgarh was always known for its tigers, before it became a tiger reserve. Bandhavgarh used to be under the rulers of the erstwhile State of Rewa State and they used Bandhavgarh as their personal hunting grounds. According to legend, Lord Ram gave Bandhavgarh Fort to his brother Lakshman. The next step was selecting a hotel and again the internet came to the rescue. While the MP Tourism Department runs the Bandhavgarh White Tiger Forest Lodge and is one of the oldest properties in Bandhavgarh, we opted for Wildflower Resort, Bandhavgarh not too far from the park office. A few calls later, a room had been booked as well as a Gypsy with driver for safaris. There are several other hotel options, like Wild Haven Resort or if one wants an all-out luxury experience, there is the Mahua Kothi which is run by the Taj Group. Shortly after the hotel room reservations had been made there was good news from Hyundai – while they were unable to offer the Elantra I had requested, there was a new i20 diesel I could have. I promptly went to take delivery of the car. Pouring over the route maps, we finalised the shortest route to Bandhavgarh - take NH2 to Agra, cut through Agra to NH3 which would take us to Gwalior and then on to Jhansi. From Jhansi the route would take us through the Panna WLS on to Satna and from there it would be down

www.carnstyle.com

to Bandhavgarh. The total distance to Bandhavgarh was about 900km each way and while two of us were of the opinion we should travel in a relaxed manner, perhaps with an overnight halt in Jabalpur or Khajuraho, it was eventually decided that we would start early in the morning and drive through the day in a manner that would get us into Bandhavgarh by the evening, giving us time to relax, go to sleep and wake up refreshed for the early morning safari the next day. With everything set, it was just a matter of getting a good night’s sleep. The British

Premiership threw a spanner in the works unfortunately. Both cousins are ardent Man United fans and Man United had a game that started at midnight – the night we were supposed to start. As a result, while I grabbed some shut-eye time, my cousins stayed up to watch the match. We would leave as soon as the game finished. We left Gurgaon at 3AM in the morning and one has to say that because of the desolate roads, we made good time all the way to Gwalior, revelling in the i20’s diesel torque all the way. The problem began once we left Gwalior. Gwalior to Jhansi is not much in terms of distance but the atrocious condition of the highway forced us to reduce speed so drastically that any advantage the early morning start had offered us came undone. By the time we struggled into Jhansi, we were so irritated that we swore we would not return by that route, by hook or by crook!! The thought of seeing tigers spurred us on however. We were lucky to sail through without hitting much traffic. Now on NH 75, we would be heading for Mau, then Nowgong and Chattarpur before driving through Panna to Satna from where we would take a right towards Maihar and head down towards Badhavgarh. We had confirmed the route earlier with the Wildflower Resort. What we hadn’t bargained for was the huge traffic jam at the Maihar level crossing – it was bad enough to tear off

the remainder of my hair. We did not see the road on the right because of the jam and we did not know that we had to take a right immediately after the crossing – as a result, after an hour’s driving we found ourselves heading towards Rewa instead. It was dark by now and we headed back as best as we could to reach the right road which turned out to be a beauty all the way to the t-junction where we turned left for the tiger reserve. After driving for some time, the road started deteriorating at one point it virtually disappeared and we had to drive off the road than on it. This continued for about 8km in the darkness with the reserve forest on either side till we reached the gates and then the main administrative office of Bandhavgarh. It turned out the road has been deliberately left in that condition to ensure vehicles

52 / Car N Style / February 2013

cannot speed as wild animals often cross over from one side of the park to the other. It was a good thing that the room in our cottage at Wildflower Resort turned out to be large and comfortable and most importantly, the bathroom had running hot water available. After a good dinner (included in the room charge), we fell asleep in no time. In terms of wildlife, Bandhavgarh was not a disappointment but in terms of tiger spotting it most certainly was. We did not see anything spectacular in the much-vaunted Tala zone during the morning safari, which is reputed to have

Pugmark the most tigers. In the afternoon, as we went to the Khitauli zone we were told about a tiger mating with a tigress as evidenced by the racket they create while

www.carnstyle.com

Travel in the throes of passion. However, the tall grass did not allow a good view and then a forest official came and shooed everybody away. Returning for a last look before we left Khitauli, after much straining of eyes and false alarms we saw the tiger’s bum behind a tree in the distance but that was it. The next day we went on safari to both Khitauli and Magadih zones again – this time we saw pug marks, even saw reasonably fresh droppings, we waited near a watering hole expecting a tiger to show up but Mr Stripes proved to be elusive again. Disappointed, we headed back to our hotel to pack for our departure the next morning. Yes, we had seen deer and monkeys, langurs but not what we had driven down to see. It was still dark as we left the reserve at about 5.30AM with a sense of discontentment. As we battled our way over the broken, almost non-existent, road through the lifting darkness, suddenly my cousin who was sitting at the rear said “what’s that”? I was at the wheel at the time, gingerly negotiating the potholes and I looked up and ahead to see two lights sparkling through the mist. Almost

www.carnstyle.com

immediately we realised that the sparkling lights were in fact eyes reflecting the light from the i20’s headlights, eyes that belonged to a rather large male tiger that had just crossed the road ahead of us and was now walking majestically towards us along the side of the road. I stopped the car and turned it so that the headlights lit the tiger better. None of us had our cameras ready, we were just frozen in place as we watched the tiger - then it found the hole in the bushes it was going to and disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared. Then the realisation crept in – I did not get an image of the tiger! All I have is the memory. The return journey was uneventful. This time though we took the Shivpuri road just after Jhansi which is a divided dual carriageway delight to drive on (why can’t all highways be like that??), past the Madhab national park before turning right for the Shivpuri-Gwalior bypass road. We bypassed Agra as well and saved a lot of time and

we were back in Delhi in time for dinner. One has to praise the i20d here – it took a battering on the Gwalior-Jhansi stretch as well as on the final stretch just before Bandhavgarh but even after an 1800km trip with a lot of bad roads with potholes and unmarked speed breakers thrown in, it did not develop a single rattle or squeak. Moreover, the soft suspension eased the impact of potholes for the rear seat passenger and the engine proved to be a happy performer. This only means that one needs to visit Bandhavgarh again as there is unfinished business there. Hopefully 2013 will be better in terms of tiger spotting.

ITC Maurya The luxury collection Report: Jyoti Balani

ou know you are in for a great stay when you get a warm welcome the moment you step into a hotel. Located amidst the green environs of New Delhi’s Diplomatic Enclave, a few minutes drive from both the airport and the city center, ITC Maurya, flagship hotel of ITC Hotels manages to entice you the moment you step foot into this luxuriously beautiful property. With 440 luxury rooms and suites, including the Towers and ITC One set apart in a separate block, I was informed that this has been the preferred residence of visiting global luminaries since years in the capital. A luxury hotel with modern and contemporary facilities, ITC Maurya offers a grand view of Delhi’s largest green belt. The hotel’s architecture is based on the ancient Buddhist stupas of the 3rd century B.C. and is named after the great dynasty of that period - the Mauryan dynasty. ITC Maurya houses seven floors, and is patterned after the cross section of a pyramid. Built with pink Dholpur stones, ITC Maurya experience begins in the stunning lobby where the sight of a unique 3000 sq. ft mural painted by one of India’s leading artists; Krishen Khanna enthralls one and all. This mural depicts, in the artist’s words, “The great procession that is India and Indian life”. A series of painting on glass by the well-known M.F. Husain, illustrates Kautilya’s ‘Arthashastra’ written in Mauryan times. Fashion

In conversation with Salim Asgarally Jyoti Balani Salim Asgarally is one of India’s few formally trained fashion designers with a degree at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising as well as the University of California in Los Angeles. His collections reflect an international spirit in style, silhouette and drape, while retaining an Indian sensibility of color, texture and embellishment. Even though the extremely talented Salim Asgarally received many offers to continue designing in America, his heart beat for his homeland and Salim returned to India to pursue a dream - to make Indian women more beautiful than they already are and to create a label that truly evokes an international feel! Today the Salim Asgarally label is worn not only by fashionable women in India but across the globe. The Salim Asgarally label has three design ranges – Couture, Pret A Porter and Home Accessories. From day wear shirts and ethnic ensembles, to evening dresses, sarees, tunics, ball gowns and little black dresses, his collections can make a woman feel stylish and ‘with it’ anywhere in the world. His Garden Studio in Mumbai stocks his entire range and can be visited by appointment only. Regular exhibitions and shows every year in places as diverse as Dubai, Dar-e-Salaam, Singapore, South Africa, Nairobi, London and Los Angeles keep the SA label flying high. His creations can also be found on the racks of chic fashion houses such as Ogaan (Mumbai and New Delhi), Fuel (Mumbai and Pune), Ffolio (Bangalore), Sade (Pune) and Sauce (Dubai), besides his own studio in Mumbai. In a tête-à-tête with the designer himself, we quiz him about the various aspects of our fashion industry, his favorite colors, models, his experiences,

68 / Car N Style / February 2013

future plans, what fashion means to him and lots more! What made you decide to pursue a career in fashion? Artistically inclined as a child, my text books were covered with doodles of fashion sketches. I was in awe of the works of the likes of Christian Dior, Armani and Coco Chanel. Fashion school then became a natural transition as I dreamt of following in their footsteps. What do you consider the most important facets of the Indian fashion industry? The fashion industry in India is still at a very nascent stage but growing rapidly. India, with its great heritage and culture spanning centuries provides a deep well of inspiration

unlike many other countries. Besides western clothing we have a very strong tradition of ethnic wear and the saree and kameez are its strongest expression. As such we have a more diversified product base as well as a huge aspirational market to cater to both these genres of fashion. This I think is one of the most important facets of our industry. The other facet that distinguishes our industry is the presence of highly skilled craftsmen from embroiderers to pattern cutters and the fact that they come cheaper than in other parts of the world. While China is the destination for mechanized work, India is still the place to go to for stitch sensitivity and hand finishes. Rich in textile traditions, fashion designers in India have access to beautiful woven silks, cottons, varied prints and natural dyes. Hand dyeing, tie n dye and ikat is also

Fashion

available here whereas it’s an art that has become to expensive to pursue in other parts of the world What do you think are the current and future trends in fashion? The Dior dress is back. In it’s modern avataar it’s shorter, and can be seen in looks that range from day to evening. Feminity has taken centre stage again. Lace, frills, bows, satin and floral prints are trending. Colors to watch out for are plum, molten gold and gunmetal grey. How do you think your education has prepared you to work in fashion? Fashion school prepares you with the tools and skills needed to pursue a career in fashion design. Nobody can teach you how to design, that is an innate ability. Nonetheless it shows you the way to give expression to your talent. From doing a fashion sketch to pattern making and grading, cutting and sewing you learn the craft of constructing a garment. Fashion school enlightens you on the science of trend forecasting, textiles, costing and such relevant subjects the knowledge of which is essential as a fashion designer. Having studied fashion in the west, at the Fashion Institute Of Design and Merchandising, Los Angeles has not only endowed me with the requisite skill sets of my profession, but has also widened my perspective of the trade. Today my vision of fashion is an integrated approach which combines the best of what India has to offer along with the professionalism and perfection that the western designers are so famous for. My education in fashion along with over 20 years of experience in the trade has placed me in a position I am proud and happy to be in today. Define ‘Fashion.’ You cannot define fashion. It defeats definition and cannot be theorized. Simply put, it is a collective expression of style which winds its way from clothing to lifestyle and living and dictates not only how we dress but is also a reflection of the socio cultural mindsets that we exist in. Fashion is not an entity by itself, rather it

Fashion is the coming together of people’s choices and the way they choose to establish an identity of their own either personally or as a race or set of individuals. How would you describe your personal style? Personally I love simplicity. I have a weakness for accessories so love good shoes, watches and sunglasses. I also love wearing silver so have a collection of rings and neckpieces. My wardrobe consists of linen and more linen, from shirts to trousers I am a very linen person. My favorite colors are beige, blues and olives and white for the day and love black for the evening. I think my style statement would be best described in one word which is ‘suave’! What was the first article of clothing you ever designed? A long rust cotton mull mull bias cut kameez in 1990. Its one of my most treasured pieces and my sister is its proud owner. She just wore it recently for a friends wedding and the best part about it is that it hasn’t dated and looks as beautiful and fashionable as it did the day I designed it. Tell me a little about yourself. Where are you from? What are your general professional and non-professional interests? By birth and heart I am a Mumbaikar, but having lived in and traveled to places as diverse as Los Angeles, Singapore, Dubai, Dar-es-salaam and many more with my work, I feel I am a citizen of the world! You cannot be truly creative if your horizons are narrow. I am passionate about my work and feel truly blessed that I am in a profession which I love. Being creative is not an option for me; it’s the way I function. I need to create all the while, be it clothes, interiors bags, shoes, soft furnishings, furniture .... you name it. Fortunately for me, my talent was recognized by not only the press and media but by the trade itself. My creations retail from the best fashion stores across the country and I have a set of loyal clientele that range from industrialists, entrepreneurs, film stars and the who’s who of society. Apart from being a workaholic I love to travel. Gardening is another passion and my studio in Mumbai has the backdrop

www.carnstyle.com

of a terrace garden. It is here that I meet with my clients and create my designs. I am at my best when I am close to nature.

The entire process varies from a week to at times months especially if it is part of the couture label!

What does fashion mean to you? Fashion is my life. I breathe it. I dream it! To see my creations come alive on the ramp is an unparallel high. Even more satisfying is seeing real women (other than models that is, no offence meant to the models) looking beautiful in my creations.

Who is one of your favorite local models to work with? My favorite at the moment is Sarah Jane Dias. Alecia Raut, Lekha Raman and Deepti Gujral are wonderful to work with as well. Not only do they have great bodies for clothes but they also have the ability to create beautiful pictures both on and off the ramp.

How would you define your city’s fashion? Fashion in Mumbai is a reflection of what the city is all about. Bold, Beautiful and Brave! Mumbai is to India what New York is to the U.S of A. It is the melting pot of the country. It’s where East meets west and the North rubs shoulders with the South. Fashion in this city ranges from eclectic street styles a “la Govinda” to the chic of the cities elite at page3 do’s and red carpet award nights where the stars show up in their best designer wear. It is an amalgam of how the city that never sleeps defines its aspirations and emulates its favorite Bollywood deities. How does designing shoes or jewelry differ from designing clothes? The difference lies in the production process and not in the design process. With clothing one works with fabric, with jewelry its metals and shoes its leather or fabric again. Design comes from the same innate aesthetic ability whatever be the object of design; it is the craft of construction and the medium that differs. An artist may paint with oil on canvas or watercolor on paper but his signature style will always remain the same. So also in fashion the medium may change but the design expression is a constant. How long does it usually take you to construct a piece? The design process starts in the head and moves on to paper as a sketch and then a fit sample. Fabrics are chosen to work with the fit and flow of the garment and the final version starts making an appearance. After fit corrections, embellishments and embroideries or other detailing is put together to give the ensemble its end look.

Describe the general process you go through to design and realize a piece of clothing. As everything else it first starts in the head. It could be from a painting in a museum or the colors in a sunset. Inspiration is diverse and you never know when it hits you. Like for a film maker every incident in his or her life can translate into a scene in a film. For a fashion designer the colors of a sunset find its way into a garment. A vision develops and the creative juices start to flow. One follows the other and from the cutting table to the sewing machine emerges a shape and silhouette that goes on to become the showstopper. What are some of your accomplishments as a designer? Producing three collections a year of garments, bags, shoes and home furnishings for the past 20 years is an accomplishment in itself. Who are some of your favorite designers? Coco Chanel for her pragmatism in design, Armani for his elegance and Roberto Cavalli and Valentino for their flamboyance, Rajesh Pratap Singh for his restraint, Sabyasachi for his vision and Shahab Durazi for his flawless finish. How do you select your models? Must have a minimum height of 5 feet 8 inches and should not exceed 34” on the chest. A great lean body, the ability to stride on the ramp and exude the right body language is a must. Professionalism and attitude along with an interesting face come close on the heels.

Fashion What are some of your favorite clothing stores/catalogs/websites? Harrods in London, Ogaan in New Delhi, Sauce in Dubai, Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles and street shopping in Mumbai where you can find some of the most interesting buys. What do you believe makes a quality article of clothing? Fit, Fall and Finish. These are the 3F’s of fashion apart from the word itself that make a garment transcend into a work of art. Do you consider yourself an artist? Completely! You cannot create if you are not an artist. To me fashion is ultimately an art form and cannot be considered as anything less! What matters to you most as a fashion designer? What really matters the most is making the garment come as close to how I had envisioned it. What’s your favorite part about conceptualizing a design? To see it falling naturally into the trend of the season. How do you prepare for a fashion shoot or show? Apart from making sure that the garments are all ready a day or two ahead of time I make sure that the fittings are impeccable and insist on all model measurements including shoe sizes being given way ahead of the show or shoot. I do not appreciate last minute half measures. Zippers and closures are double checked before the event. All my assistants are briefed about their roles and responsibilities so that the entire process is a smooth one from start to finish. Lists, charts, notes are made about every single detail to eliminate last minute disasters. On the day of the shoot/ show I like to detach myself from the actual happening as my assistants are well trained to deal with emergencies and I like to enjoy the process and the show itself. Do you prefer sketching designs or actually constructing them? I prefer sketching and planning before

72 / Car N Style / February 2013

I actually start the cutting or draping process. Tell me about the process of sketching a design. What kind of paper and pencil/ pen do you use? White a4 size paper, clean eraser, HB lead pencils and water soluble color pencils, crayons and marker pens is what I keep handy. What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers? Be yourself. Be inspired but do not imitate. What do you like best about designing clothes? The power to transform the woman who wears my designs from the ordinary to the glamorous and confident. I like the fact that the woman who wears Salim Asgarally feels empowered in them. How would you define the style your line exemplifies? Chic understated elegance. What are some of your fashion goals? To have chain stores that retail the Salim Asgarally brand world over. What are some of your favorite fashion websites, magazines, or books? L’officiel (French), Vogue and books on

Fashion history and art. What other experience do you have in the fashion industry (stylist, retail, marketing, etc.)? Costume design and teaching have been new additions to my portfolio. What are your favorite colors to work with and why? Whites for the feel of purity and freshness it creates. Black and gold for evening glamour and red for its ability to make heads turn What are your favorite fabrics to work with and why? Soft sheer and sensual is the feel I love. So chiffons and georgettes are a natural choice. Also they drape beautifully and follow the curve of the body without clinging. Linen for summers, its cool looks fresh and most important is very comfortable to wear. Linen also takes very well to cutwork which is one of the USP’s of my designs. What are your favorite patterns [prints] to work with and why? I prefer working with plain fabrics and texturising them. I also love dye effects such as shading, crushing and tie dyeing as opposed to prints. I also like fabrics with self or contrast weaves and dual tones.

Numerological Preparations: For the Number 6 Concept and report: Jyoti Balani Food and location courtesy: Le Meridien, Pune. Numerology as we all know is used to determine an individual’s personality, strengths and talents, obstacles, inner needs, emotional reactions and ways of dealing with others. These days a lot of people use numerology to examine their life, take advantage of unexplored opportunities, or simply figure out where to go next. But few people are aware there is a connection between food and numerology as well. Every number has both good as well as bad qualities. People associated with a particular number are more likely to suffer from a sickness owing to the ill effects connected with their numbers; which is why numerologists recommend foods that help in curing that particular weakness. We consulted prominent numerologist Swetta Jumaani and she came up with a list of ingredients suitable to each number starting from number 1. These ingredients were then passed onto talented chefs from Pune to create 6 unique recipes using their creativity and imagination. Needless to say the results were amazing and are here for all to see and try out these recipes.

Number 6: The Goddess of love Number 6 people: Those born on the 6th, 15th and 24th in any month are Number 6 people, ruled by the planet Venus. Venus also rules Librans and Taurus and is the planet of love, peace, harmony, luxury, beauty and entertainment. Number 6 people are generally romantic and peace loving, even if they are a little sensitive. They can be moved easily by others sufferings. They are usually swayed by emotions and listen more often to their hearts, than they should. They crave much for social life and love to entertain friends. There is every likelihood that sooner or later they will crave for amusement or entertainment of others by the employment of one or more of the Venus qualities, such as music, art especially dramatic art, dress/interior designing, the film world, literature, poetry, sports, singing, dancing, etc. They would make a success of enterprises connected with the luxurious side of life more than any other, such things as the decoration of homes, dresses and flower shops or the catering of food, restaurants or hotels. Other professions suitable for them are setting up a beauty salon, dress designing, flowers, jewelry, hotels, acting, modeling, entertainment, holidays, tour operating, banking, or any line of work where there is flow of solid or liquid cash, or where there is constant flow of young people. Reema Lamba, also a number 6, a model who was struggling for over 6 years changed her name to Maillika Sherawat, to bring it also on number 6, and tasted success like never before. Subhash Ghai, one of the greatest showmen India has produced is a Number 6 in Numerology, and so is ‘serial kisser’ Emraan Hashmi. Sachin Tendulkar (24th April) and Sania Mirza (15-11-1986) are examples of Number 6 people who have used their Venus qualities and have become popular public figures.

ooking for a heavenly Sunday breakfast buffet? Enter Kafe Fontana. As far as my memory takes me, the stylish 24-hour coffee shop next-to-lobby at the Taj Palace Hotel in Chanakyapuri has been popular with Delhi residents and hotel guests for decades. It is known for its grand multicuisine buffet (for breakfast, lunch and dinner) and a service that exudes great comfort and panache. Overlooking the lush lawns surrounding the open-air swimming pool with the backdrop of hotel’s arched frontage, one gets the serene view that is a perfect treat for those who like to relax in the lounge or in the seating area by the glass windows or eat in the open during breakfast and lunch. One gets the view of landscaped lawns with abounding tall palm trees. The coffee shop offers both a-la-carte and buffet with the latter being more popular. The breakfast selection is lavish and comprises continental fare packed

with the staple American menu (the special coffee crème brulee, omelettes, waffles, pancakes, muffins, quiche, croissant, and doughnuts), alongside the pastas, lasagnas, sandwiches, cereals, porridge et al. There are also the Delhi’s regular stuffed Punjabi paranthas, north Indian chana bhatura and some south Indian and Gujarati dishes like dosa, idli, upma and dhokla, apart from a section of breads and fresh fruits with many kinds of flavoured yoghurts and fresh juices. Noticeably, the south Indian dosas, chutneys and sambar had their authentic flavor despite being a part of the largely continental buffet. An array of cheeses, flavored freshlybaked breads, sausages, pizzas, hams, jams and porridge are presented in the atrium. The breakfast buffet priced at just 880 (with taxes) is laid out at 7am and lasts till 10:30am on weekdays and on Sundays it is extended to 11am. As it is mostly packed with in-house guests, bookings are not taken. The Sunday special champagne brunch costs 2,937 per head (includes unlimited premium Indian alcohol). Kafe Fontana has evolved a personality of its own by serving Lebanese food on their regular menu and for buffet. There is

also the green corner - a salad bar for fresh, low-calorie organic leaves and dressings. The open kitchen serves pizzas, but the king of the show is the oval Turkish pizza. The Ddjaj Meshwi or chicken shawarma make for rich and delicious meals in themselves. In good weather, the chairs outside the café make the experience perfect, though food is not served at the poolside in the night. In the Mughlai section, the gravy dish worth trying is the Rogan Josh; I also found the Pesto marinated grilled fish - laced with delectable herbs extremely delicious. The outlandishly rich lunch buffet is priced at Rs. 2026 (includes taxes). If you are lucky, you could get a complimentary soft drink like I did! The décor is swish akin to an Italian

Pizzeria with bright tiles around the wood oven that lends the café its warm ambience. A mishmash of a Tuscan Palazzo and a Californian hothouse with earthy colors compliments the aroma of good food and live cooking. A section of the café comprises the show-kitchen where the chefs create an assortment of pizzas, kebabs, barbeques and other dishes from countries like Turkey, Italy, France, Greece, Lebanon, Morocco and Spain. A dedicated

corner awaits the dieters, it comprises salads and low-calorie whips for fitness freaks. The café specializes in Indian cuisine and does a great job with various gravies and tandoori dishes. For starters during lunch is the digestive drink made of raw mangos, the aam panna as well as many soups. Some other meats and seafood worth trying are: chicken lababdar, murg khada masala, mutton rogan josh, bhuna gosht, steamed basa and a range of kebabs and roasted prawns - which I found wonderfully done with special marination. I was impressed with the breakfast for its eclectic dishes and for the relaxed atmosphere, feeling pleased that I was not the only one wearing a track suit! I loved the black coffee while savoring my favourite pork sausages that I followed with the freshly baked smoked ham crunchy pizza with a selection of seasonings and olive oil on it. The breakfast cannot get any fuller, I know.
