ditor’s Letter Dear Readers,
A
lmost every automotive journalist who drove the Renault Scala sedan in the hilly terrain of Shimla in North India recently would not have bothered to ask what the word Scala meant. Some may already know it. Marc Nassif, Managing Director of Renault India, a keen musician, with family links to the Italian and Egyptian opera houses, chose this name because he has always been in awe of the La Scala Opera theatre in Italy. Now that I had driven the car too and read up a lot about opera, I was keen to link the car to anything ‘Opera’. Finally, I was able to source the picture of a native of Montreal, Yannick Nézet-Séguin who was in June 2010 appointed Music Director of the Philadelphia Orchestra. His picture has been taken by Marco Borggreve. There could not have been a better combination of pictures to highlight the beautiful Scala. Car N Style magazine is into its second month as a standalone magazine. The first one priced at 50 was like a breath of fresh air in the mundane world of automobile magazines. There is no denying the fact that our product is proving to be the little David among the Goliaths of the publishing industry. This magazine will keep evolving as we move on, expressing itself as a lifestyle magazine that brings together the worlds of automobiles, travel and gadgets, apart from other lifestyle subjects. If you would have noticed, we have also increased the font size of the Car N Style title and have made the magazine far more stylish and interesting. As usual, it’s got a whole lot of brief reviews of cars and bikes. We drove the Nissan Evalia, the Hyundai Elantra and rode bikes like the Suzuki Hayate, KTM 200 Duke and the Honda CBR 250R. Travel reports definitely bring character to our lifestyle magazine. Our Pune-based writer Jyoti Balani has written extensively on travel and related subjects, apart from cuisine. There is an interesting report on food and numerology. The write-up is part of a series of nine. Jyoti consulted prominent numerologist, Swetta Jumaani and she came up with a list of ingredients suitable to each number starting from number 1. These ingredients were then passed onto talented chefs from Pune to create 6 unique recipes using their creativity and imagination. Read on, for some very interesting news!

Tutu’s fine tunes
Renault Scala Déjà vu R.K. Dhawan (Tutu)
O
ne look at the Renault Scala and you wonder why the company had to pick the Nissan Sunny and camouflage it for you. I wonder how the general public will take it. Today the consumer is far more informed about the products he intends to buy. If there are no major differences between two cars, then why should a person buy them? Everybody is interested in upgrading to a new car. The Renault Scala would definitely not be a volume player for the company. For the volumes, the Duster is doing the job for them. Of course, the Duster”s popularity could possibly rub off on the Scala too. With the Scala coming into the Renault India fold, it would be the company’s fifth offering for the country. This is bound to make the Renault India dealers a happy lot. For Renault, the only major success story has been the Duster. The cars before that did not set the sales charts afire. The Scala too is not likely to be a great success. It will do well in its category but it is unlikely to be a hot seller. I am surprised why Renault with a great DNA does not come with a standalone product of its own where you are able to excite the customer. Only on that basis can you make a dent in that segment. You can share platforms and engines, but the end product needs to distinguish
6 / Car N Style / September 2012
itself. Today, the Fiat engine is shared by three manufacturers—Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Fiat India. Yet, each one is doing relatively well. Each of these three companies may be sharing the engine but the products are distinct in shape, size and looks. In the case of Renault too, the engineering could have been the same, but the overall product had to be different. The Scala and the Sunny share almost
the same features and looks. I am not for such similarities between two cars. If I was given a choice, I would not have done it. This only indicates that Renault has nothing different to show to the world. With the Scala they seem to be telling the consumers, “We are sorry, this is all we have to offer”. At the end of the day, every consumer wants something different, which brings a little more excitement in their lives. You may be wearing a watch for a few years,
but after some time you would like to change it, not because the watch is bad, but you want a new one that excites you. You do not really want to wear one that looks dated. The same goes for everything you buy, even your cars. Today you cannot wear out a car; you simply get bored of it. Thus, if you are bored of a Sunny, would you be buying a Scala? Apart from the excitement a new car has to offer in terms of its looks it should also have exciting features. Features like park assist etc should come as standard fitments in the top model at least. It’s good that they are offering foldable outside rear view mirrors. But a reverse parking camera should have been another feature. With parking spaces shrinking, this feature of a rear view parking camera is a real must. A stage might also come when we would require gull wings or sliding doors to get out of a car because there would be no space to open the door to get in our out. There are so many car manufacturers who use the same platform to make different cars. The Innova and the Fortuner share the same platform, yet they are so different. Nobody can guess that the platforms are same. Renault is no small car manufacturer. It’s a company with muscles. Look how well they are doing in the F1 circuit. Obviously people expect something exciting from the company. (As told to P. Tharyan)

Footloose
TEN COMMANDMENTS OF THE INDIAN ROADS Murad Ali Baig
1. Might is right. Never give way to lesser vehicles or lesser mortals. Sacred caste hierarchies apply to vehicles as much as to people. The few timid owner-drivers are a minority. The dominant drivers of Indian trucks, buses, taxis and corporate cars having recently migrated from their villages only understand the jungle lore of the survival of the fittest. They drive their vehicles as if they were 100 horse power bullock carts and, therefore, have no conditioning for the use of brakes. Loud and hoarse horns have, however, replaced the loud and hoarse shouts and abuse customary for ploughing through raucous traffic. 2. WHAT LAWS? Everyone knows that one must only obey one’s own inner dharma and follow the dictates of custom and ritual which exalts the importance on ‘I’, ‘me’ and ‘mine’. The statutory laws and regulations concerning stop lights, zebra crossings, one way streets, right of way, no horn zones, vehicle modifications, brakes, anti pollution, etc., are just the whims of the rulers in power and have no real moral weight. At worst, non-observance will lead to fines and a little police harassment usually amounting to little more than an abusive warning. 3. Slack enforcement of laws. The traffic cops are, after all, villagers of the same basic peasant stock as the aforementioned drivers and can, therefore, be relied upon to not take their official duties too seriously. They basically sympathise with errant drivers and would not dream of stern action, which could harm their meagre livelihoods. In exchange for a few customary notes, they will let things go their own way.
8 / Car N Style / September 2012
4. Divine inspiration directs mortal man. Miracles can be observed at every cross road when vehicles roaring down from the four directions seem to, at the very last moment, find inspired ways of disentangling themselves from certain disaster. A mysterious autopilot, like some heavenly bullock seems to enable them to nose their way out of an intractable mess. 5. The meek shall inherit the earth. Road rules do not apply to pedestrians who will boldly walk onto the highways without a glance to the right or left. Cyclists, like shoals of fish, swarm and swerve in miraculous ways. Woe betides any motorist who dares to touch them let alone knock them down. Angry crowds will quickly materialise to confirm beyond any shadow of doubt that the fault was entirely on the part of the big, bad motorist. The cops will soon be in for the kill for they know that motorists’ pockets run long and deep. 6. Holy cow. Serene in the middle of the road and given wide berth by all. Helpfully doing the jobs of the sanitary staff in clearing the uncleaned rubbish bins, they eternally chew their cud and philosophically observe the crazy antics of humans, secure in the knowledge that no one would dare to push them, hurt them or remove them. 7. A woman’s place is at home. Most male drivers consider women a positive hazard on the roads. Apart from being distractions that turn men’s heads and contribute to traffic accidents, their scatter-brained attempts to drive cars and scooters are invitations to disaster. Statistics proving that women are safer drivers must be the result of their
devious manipulations. The Indian road is unquestionably a Man’s world and the foolish women who venture there fully deserve the ogles and whistles which they complain about. 8. Freedom of expression. Every citizen has the democratic right to express him or herself volubly on directions, driving and traffic situations. Back seat driving is a national right. This is usually quite harmless unless there is a lady driver who needs to turn around for eye contact to confirm what she is saying. 9. The devil takes the hind seat. Driving demands daring and audacity. An opportunity lost, is lost forever. So every little gap in traffic must be exploited immediately. Pushing and shoving is the norm especially at red lights or railway crossings and it’s just bad Karma if the oncoming traffic is paralysed. The orderly driving observed in the West is so unutterably boring. A few scraped fenders and frayed tempers are part of the colourful fun of driving on the Indian roads. 10. The seven deadly sins are just sanctimonious sludge puddle. Which sane driver is not driven by greed to get an opulent car, which enhances his pride and is the envy of all others? Which Indian driver does not lustily fantasise intimate moments with an attractive bird on the scooter ahead? Which driver does not hate the cops and other drivers and does not give full vent to his anger with wild gesticulations and unheard abuse?

Yamuna Expressway: Road to the future
Report: Noble Varghese, Photography: Mohd. Nasir This is the future we’ll be driving our cars on. The Delhi-Agra Yamuna Expressway is a hint of good things to come. The 165 km long stretch is as smooth as silk and is going to let us drive at speeds the whole world has been used to for years. Earlier, seeing the Taj Mahal was something to look forward to, but getting there was dreaded. The 5 odd hours it took to reach the place completely drained the energy out of you. Seeing the Taj when you stepped into that courtyard would put some life back, but by the time you got back home you were
probably cursing yourself on why you ever made the trip. The Yamuna Expressway is going to change all that. The quality of the road is fantastic, and because it is made out of concrete and not tarmac, is prone to less wear and tear. The day we drove on the expressway, the toll was free, but now you’ll have to shell out 320 for one way and 510 for a round trip if you’re in a car. On a bike, you’ll have to pay 150 one-way and 240 a round trip. Keep in mind to have enough fuel to last you, check the condition and pressure of the
tyres, and make sure you’ve had proper rest. Running continuously at high speeds for long periods of time can result in the tyres blowing up, or you falling asleep on the wheel – both of which could lead to highly unpleasant experiences. There are restaurants and wash-rooms at every toll gate so you don’t have to hold anything in for too long. With more roads like these coming up in our country, the development of the whole nation could see a manifold increase.

here are two kinds of people in the world – the rich and the poor. The poor, when they want to appreciate beauty (both the wheeled and the legged variety), visit the Delhi Auto Expo, where they can appreciate all they want, provided they stand in line. The rich, on the other hand go to the Concours d’Elegance. The only provision expected is that you have a glass of awfully expensive wine in one hand and a designer clutch in the other – or a wife with a designer clutch. The Concours d’Elegance held at Pebble Beach, California each year is a showcase of the most beautiful, vintage and rare automobiles in the world that come together to be judged for their elegance. It is the finale event of the week long exhibition of classic cars held at the Monterey County in California. Past greats have included Ferraris (obviously) like the 250 GTO and the 250 Testarossa, the Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, Duesenbergs, Aston Martins (like the DB4 Zagato Coupe), the gorgeous Bugatti Type 57C, and recently a Ford GT40 which sold for a record US $11 million – the most expensive American-built car to be ever sold at an auction. Another Ferrari that went for the same amount recently was the 250 California LWB Spider. Oh did I forget to mention that? Yes it’s also a coming together of some of the most expensive cars to have ever been driven-----Millions and millions of dollars worth of cars and bikes being shown off proudly by their owners. There are countless auctions that happen around the area of Monterey during the week and it is this time of the year when mere mortals like us are introduced to figures of money previously thought to be only with governments.

The different category winners are judged based on their level of originality, preservation/restoration, amount of racing history involved, level of technology present for the time of the car, the styling and rarity. The car should still be driveable and most of all, as the contest declares, the car should be “Elegant”.

the racing sequences of his film at actual race car speeds. So he bought the fastest car he could get his hands on, chopped off the roof, fit in a huge camera and raced it around the track with the other cars. This went on for five months until the end of filming, following which it was sold off to a string of car collectors who kept restoring and preserving it till it ended up on Pebble Beach this year to blow our collective minds away. The 1960 California 250 LWB Spider Competizione, another extremely rare car, does not have such an interesting history but went for US $11 million nonetheless, probably because it was red in colour and had a horse on its bonnet. One of the categories that the cars are entered in is the Concept Car category. Now this is where the manufacturers of our times try to get a foot into the show, by entering concepts that might or might not be eventually built but end up on teenagers’ posters anyway. Not to mention the huge amount of prestige involved in being associated with the contest. BMW showed the Zagato Roadster this year and Lamborghini showcased their new Urus concept SUV. These will probably be allowed to be drooled over in their respective showrooms in the near future. India was in the picture too this year. A 1924 Rolls Royce Barker Tourer, entered by Shirji Arvind Singh Mewar, Maharana of Udaipur, won the Lucius Beebe special award. Now check out the pictures on these pages, and ask yourself, how much would you be able to make if you sold your kidneys, your house, a couple of your children and worked three jobs together, so you could someday be able to afford one of the cars shown here.

eatro alla Scala is a world renowned opera house in Milan, Italy. Today, the theatre is recognised as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world and is home to the La Scala Theatre Chorus, La Scala Theatre Ballet and La Scala Theatre Orchestra. Unknown, perhaps, to this famous Italian theatre is another Scala that is going to change the way we Indians drive....Renault’s new Scala sedan. And mind you, the name of

The name was chosen by none other than Marc Nassif, Managing Director of Renault India, a keen musician with family links to opera theatres in Italy and Egypt. Nassif hopes that Scala will create a stir in the sedan segment in India. It’s basically a Nissan Sunny sedan smartly camouflaged in new attire. Deja vu? A la Pulse and Micra way! comparison to its cousin from the Japanese company Nissan. The Scala too comes in two versions of petrol and diesel which in turn have two trim levels each (RXE & RXL) and (RXL & RXZ) respectively . Under the bonnet of the car is a 1498cc XH2 petrol engine, while the diesel car has a 1461cc Renault K9K engine. Undoubtedly, the Scala looks more appealing than the Sunny with its smarter grille, stylish headlamps and alloy wheels. Nassif has ensured that the Scala comes with a lot of chrome inside, especially the door handles, thereby making it more attractive than its Japanese cousin. We drove a jet black diesel version RXL. The drive started from the Chandigarh airport and we drove

all the way beyond the Shimla Mall to the Wildflower Hall run by the Oberoi group, situated at 8,250 feet in the magnificent Himalayas. As we began our drive we noticed that the fuel was not topped at all. It was way below the ‘Full’ mark. On our way back the next day from the hotel, there was still plenty of diesel left. The car actually gives around 21.64kmpl. On our way out of Chandigarh, we sped effortlessly on the Himalayan Expressway. There was no stopping this car. But the climb required that I change gears frequently to ensure that the engine did not lose it’s power. The ride quality was amazing, a fact that we discovered when we drove over rough roads and short patches of slush and rubble. The suspension was obviously fine tuned to give
adequate ride comfort to the occupants. There’s plenty of space in the car too. Obviously it is another version of the Caaar! Back seat space is very adequate and I also felt that the seats were a tad more comfortable than the Sunny seats. Though I drove the RXL, I heard that the top end RXZ comes with leather seats. But what should have been offered in the RXL and RXZ versions are a reverse parking camera or sensors and a USB outlet in the music system. Maybe there’s enough time for them to include these features before the big launch around festival time. All in all, you cannot separate two cousins, the striking resemblance is there for all to see.....But after the Duster, the company is hopeful it would be an encore with the Scala!

expected the launch of the new BMW 3 Series to be a real dull and mundane affair in Mumbai. I carried along a camera, hoping to capture this rather stifling proceeding to which I thought I was being invited. Sachin Tendulkar was to launch the vehicle. So what? I was no great fan of his, though more than half the Indian population would willingly lynch me to death for my uncaring stance. Suddenly the lights came on the stage and BMW India’s energetic
President Dr. Andreas Schaaf spoke on the virtues of the new car he was launching. Then Sachin stepped in and he looked so irresistibly handsome that the gleaming red BMW and the God of Indian cricket were in absolute sync. Schaaf smiled, as though he knew that his cars had a profound impact on everyone who gets associated with a BMW. A few days later, I got my hands on the 320d Luxury Plus variant and by Jove, isn’t this car every man dreams of when he climbs the ladder of

success? When I took the wheel of the diesel 3 Series, I couldn’t help but nod in agreement to everything what Sachin had said about the new BMW 3 Series. No wonder BMW is calling it the Ultimate 3. This is the sixth generation BMW 3 Series. The all-new BMW 3 Series is available in two design schemes – Sport Line and Luxury Line. Sport Line ensures a rush of adrenaline with sporty styling and interiors while Luxury Line indulges you to move in style with elegant contours and luxurious features. The new BMW 3 Series has literally grown in stature and size compared to its predecessor. It’s got a wider track
(front + 37 mm, rear + 47 mm), the length of the car has increased by 93 mm and the wheel base by 50 mm. There you go, with everything around you shrinking in size, here’s something which is actually giving you more value for money. The car comes in both petrol and diesel engine options. For the petrol there is the 328i Sport Line. For the diesel you have the 320d, the 320d Sport Line, the 320d Luxury Line and the 320d Luxury Plus. So how did I know I was driving the 320d Luxury Plus? Well, it’s got 320d written behind the vehicle and once you get in, all you have to do is to look up to the heavens and you get to see a glass sun roof. This only comes in the

components (including a disengageable air conditioning compressor) also play their part in reducing fuel consumption. Apart from the Driving Experience Control switch that offers Comfort, Sport and Sport + options, it also offers an ECO PRO mode. This ECO PRO mode further helps in reducing fuel consumption. Now isn’t that good news in the midst of spiralling cost of fuel in our country? The latest-generation full-colour Head-Up Display projects key information – in sharp resolution – onto the windscreen so it appears directly in the driver’s field of view. This is an interesting feature in the new 3 series. On the exterior, the

It’s a different matter that you seldom get to utilise it in India’s crumbling infrastructure. But it’s the Auto Start-Stop function which comes as standard and is so endearing to a country like ours. The Biiig Caaar
f the Nissan Sunny can be the Caaar, what stops the Nissan Evalia to be the Biiig Caaar? The Nissan Evalia is not a great looker but can accommodate you, your wife, your children and your in-laws, all in good comfort. The luggage can easily be put behind and the hatch door tightly shut. On the face of it, the Evalia looks as though it has been built for a specific purpose. Nissan says it’s an urban class utility vehicle and that it’s targeted at the urban man above the age of 38 years of age.
He’s the man who’s married, has kids and has parents and in-laws whom he cannot displease. This vehicle can thus be an ideal mode of transport for his family. Are you serious? Nissan is serious. I was not particularly impressed by the look of it. It’s not a vehicle to flaunt before your neighbours or your girlfriends. It’s been built for a specific purpose, like I mentioned earlier. It’s meant to transport a large and growing family. It can also be rebuilt as an ambulance, an eatery on wheels, a maintenance vehicle, or any such

vehicle. But before all that, it’s got to transport people, as a family car. Now is this going to be easy? Yes and no. Yes, because the Japanese are a very smart people. They study the finer details of the Indian way of living. No wonder the Suzukis, the Toyotas, the Hondas, the Yamahas and now the Nissans have got to understand India so well. Who could have thought that a caaar could do well in a country obsessed with mileage? The Evalia is not a difficult vehicle to drive at all, despite the fact that it looks big and boxy in size and shape. But once you get behind the wheels, the ease and comfort of the drive surprises you. I drove the vehicle from Bangalore’s Lalit Ashok Hotel to the Nandi Hills, a distance
of around 60km. The roads were fine as we got out of Bangalore but the climb towards Nandi Hills was steep with more than 30 sharp hairpin bends. But surprisingly the vehicle was so easy to manoeuvre on these roads. I was truly taken by surprise. For a vehicle of this height and size, the body roll was almost minimal. The Evalia was first introduced in 2009 in Japan and Europe and was even premiered at the 11th Auto Expo 2012 in New Delhi. More than 100,000 units of the Evalia and its derivatives have been sold in over 32 markets globally. This seven-seater family car even boasts of a thrifty engine that delivers 19.3 kmpl. The diesel engine is the

familiar Renault-Nissan K9K engine that is now powering a whole host of vehicles like the Sunny and the Renault Duster. The 1426cc diesel engine delivers 85bhp of power and a torque of 200Nm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The vehicle comes in four trim levels: XE, XE+, XL and XV. I drove the XL that has a few features different from the XE and XE+. The XL has central locking and keyless entry which the other two do not have. It also has front power windows, unlike the two basic ones. The car scores big time on the safety and security features front. Except for the XE, the other three variants

have driver and passenger air bags for safety. All the four variants have features like brake assist, ABS, EBD and door ajar warning. They even have immobilisers to prevent vehicle theft. The car, I feel could have had a glove box compartment with a lid. It could have had a roll down window at the rear. Barring these minor irritants, the Evalia can easily capture a bit of market from its rivals like Innova, Xylo and the Ertiga. It can then go and create a market of its own. The strong points of the vehicle are the space it offers, the mileage it gives and the easy to drive feeling. Now all it needs is the right price to set the sales charts afire!

yundai has come a long way. Remember the humble Santro that gave solid competition to our very own Maruti 800? Why wouldn’t you – it’s still out there, plying on our roads. The 800’s gone but the Santro still remains. There wasn’t much else to remember about Hyundai back then. Compared to a Toyota or a Honda, nobody was even willing to touch a Hyundai with a pole stick. But my, how the tables have turned! Look at the new range of cars that
Hyundai’s been coming out with. Starting with the i10, the i20 and then the Verna, Hyundai has slowly been taking over the hearts and the pockets of middle class Indians. Now the Elantra, part of its “Fluidic” design language, is set to take the baton ahead. And it looks like the competition doesn’t even know what hit them. What You See Stunning! That’s the word for it. Hyundai really has learnt how to make beautiful cars (not considering

the occasional scratch-your-eyeout-inducing mistakes like the Sonata). The old Elantra was a soulwithering, ugly vehicle. But just look at its successor! It’s like Beyonce and her parents – you wouldn’t believe she comes from them if you saw them. There is not a single vehicle in this price segment that could come close to its aesthetics. The Civic used to be gorgeous, but now it’s just stale, waiting for its new avatar to come along. What You Get The party continues inside. The
quality and the features that you’ll see inside are going to blow you away. The competition in this category is far behind. The dash feels solid and soft to the touch, and the switches have such a premium feel to it that you’re left wondering if Hyundai seriously is making any profit on this car. There’s buttons everywhere and the usual Bluetooth and iPod/aux connection. Hyundai’s gone one step further though and given music controls on the rear armrest too. And it’s got so much power (148bhp @6500 rpm) that we were doing regular burnouts on the streets (with the traction control off). No doubt this is going to become a favourite of the Delhi boy-racers. The ride itself is also quite supple and supportive. It isolates bumps and potholes with such delight, waiting for the next one to come so it can pulverize it into the ground; all

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Quite Good but Too Late?

uick, what comes to mind when I say Mitsubishi? If, like me, you’ve grown up drooling, dreaming and following all things rallying, then it is undoubtedly the Lancer Evo and Mitsubishi’s cult rally heritage, which had dominated the rallying scene at one point – including the WRC and Dakar Rally. Everybody else, you know what it is – Mitsubishi’s disappointing performance in the
Indian market and their confusing and inconsistent marketing strategies. I mean, c’mon, they’ve got some really good cars out there. But why can’t they release those cars on time here, and market it well, and price them better? Sure, there have been occasional sparks every now and then – the old Pajero SFX for example. But do you know how old that is? It’s probably been around longer than The Simpsons. And they’ve gone and done the same thing again. The Mitsubishi Pajero

Sport, the newer version of the old Pajero SFX, is a great car, but it looks like it’s come too late to our shores. The Pajero Sport is the long due upgrade to the incredible but aging workhorse, the Pajero SFX. We had been waiting for it for ages. But the Indian market moved on to better and newer things as soon as they were offered. The Toyota Fortuner took over the market by storm, primarily because we had been waiting for a comfortable, reliable and butch looking SUV for a long time, and there was no one else to offer it. Now we have a fight on our
hands. The Pajero Sport, priced at 24,43,000 (ex showroom, Delhi), has just as much road presence as the Fortuner, but exudes way more quality than anyone else in this price segment, albeit at a couple lakhs more. It is great to look at, and every time I parked it, I couldn’t help but notice how good it looked standing still. The interiors are well appointed and the quality of the materials is just outstanding. It felt good to run my hands over the seats, the dash and the wood trimmings. Not once does it make you feel like you’ve been short-changed.

The fun doesn’t start till 3500 rpm as the turbo doesn’t kick in till then. But once it does, boy are you in for a good time. The car feels really planted even at high speeds, probably because it weighs as much as an elephant. And it shows too. And at the end of the month, when you calculate how much you’ve spent on fuel, I’d recommend you do it in the presence of a doctor. Heart attacks are known to strike

he Mahindra Verito is the kind of car that takes more than just a passing glance to like. But like you will, once you start driving it, ferrying people and luggage around in it, and most importantly, living with it. You see, most people look at a car as a piece of automotive luxury or lifestyle (something akin to how the roadside lafangas in Delhi look at a woman walking by). All they know about a car is how it impresses
their friends (or non-friends for that matter) or how others swoon at a car -- not knowing the thought process that went into the making of that piece of automotive and engineering beauty. But the Verito is not meant to impress or swoon over. It’s made for a purpose, and it doesn’t stop by at a coffee shop to dilly dally on the way to achieving that. It’s meant to be economical – and it is. It’s meant to provide large luggage space – it does. It’s meant to be fairly

maintenance free – it is. It’s meant to carry five people in comfort – and by Joe does it do that. What it isn’t meant to do is be the proverbial trophy wife that you could show off at your next social gathering. Sure it could take you to the party without putting as much as a single crease on your expensive Armani suit, but make sure you park it a mile away before you reach there. The 1.5litre Renault turbocharged diesel that we had, did a great job of carrying us around the city. We even went to Agra and back, all amounting to total fuel bills of less
than 1500. Although the engine sounds like it’s been lifted straight out of an old truck, it’s hardly noisy once you get inside. There’s a USB and Aux port available to listen to your favourite music when you get bored of the FM chatter. The seats are nice and comfortable, even for long drives (all the way to Agra, remember?), the car’s got enough ground clearance and the suspension’s sturdy and supple enough to withstand our usual Indian tarmac tantrums during the monsoons (again, Agra, remember?). At one point on the way back, we

had to negotiate the car over a speed breaker that could’ve counted in the top twenty mountain peaks in the Himalayas. The Verito took it all in its stride. The car’s got enough grunt to pull all the way to 160 km/ hr (100 m/hr) and did a splendid job of not tiring me out, even at the end of the whole day, spent driving the car. The Verito is a perfect gharwali, that’s going to take care of your family and their luggage, and make sure you’re rested even at the end of a long day. The ball is in your court now – do you want a housewife or a trophy wife?

The most striking aspect of the KTM 200 Duke is the absence of the exhaust mufflers on either of the sides; instead it is placed directly under the belly of the motorcycle. The under-belly exhaust apart from enhancing the looks of the Duke also centralises the mass on the 200 Duke – which is evident in the handling and ride quality of the bike. It has a diamond shaped steel frame for rigid and strong structure with mono-shock suspension at rear and large telescopic suspension at the front. Another notable feature is the side stand indicator and it’s a very interesting feature. I am sure every

biker has a hurtful story to recall of a side stand. Many a times bikers roar off on their bikes without pushing back the side stand, resulting in accidents and fatal falls. But with the Duke, there’s a safety angle to the side stand. The moment you insert the key into the ignition slot, the bike will indicate that the stand needs to be tucked away. And in case you pay no heed to that and consider moving on, the motorcycle engine shuts off the moment you slot the machine into the first gear. Now that’s what I call a great step towards making bike riding safer for young boys.

Honda CBR 250R Performance for the middle-class

ong have we waited for a quality sports bike that the middle-class Indian commuter could afford without selling off an organ. When the Kawasaki Ninja 250R was launched, everyone was all praise about its performance and its looks, but did we see many on the roads? Sure it was a great bike, but at the end of the day, what matters most to the Indian bike rider - whether it be the daily commuter or the performance rider
- is the number on the cheque that he signs on. Enter the Honda CBR 250R. Launched in March 2011, it has given us access to international standards of performance, at a price that doesn’t make people wince when they hear it. Honda is known the world over for their high standards of quality and their solid build. Each of their products can be put through rugged army drill tests and they’ll still come out with flying colours. The CBR 250R is no different. The moment I

sat on the bike I could feel quality everywhere – the front cowling, the switches, the seats. One look at the bike and you know it’ll be worth the 1,48,000 (ex showroom, Delhi) that you”ll pay for it. The performance is just a bonus. Ah, the performance! That liquid cooled 250cc, 25bhp engine is as smooth and creamy as butter melting on hot toast. The engine doesn’t feel like a single cylinder unit at all, revving freely till the 10,000rpm rev limiter and managing to take the bike to a
verified top speed of 137km/hr. Now you might pooh-pooh at just 25bhp, and ask how the CBR can be classed as a sports bike when even the humble Alto has 45bhp. Allow me to explain - the magic number in performance motoring is not the power rating, but the power-toweight ratio. The Bugatti Veyron, which has a 1000 bhp, but weighs close to 2000kg has a power to weight ratio of 500bhp per tonne. The average car on the Indian road weighs around 1,500kg, giving it a

power-to-weight ratio anywhere from 60bhp/tonne to 110bhp/ tonne. The Honda CBR on the other hand has a power-to-weight ratio of 150bhp/tonne. You can close your jaw now. The biggest plus point that seals Honda’s fate is its easy usability in Indian traffic and road conditions. By Indian conditions you know what I mean – conditions similar to hell, only slightly better. I rode it in all kinds of traffic and road conditions. I was even stuck in an hour long jam, but the bike didn’t overheat, the clutch didn’t eat itself up (or

my hand for that matter), I didn’t end up becoming the hunch-back of Notre Dame after hours spent on the bike and most of all, I had fun. Loads of it. The power just keeps coming in a steady stream, especially after 6000rpm and the bike feels so planted but chuckable at the same time. Looking at the pictures, I don’t think I need to say anything about its exterior design characteristics. I mean, just look at it! The only low point throughout the time I kept the bike was when I remembered I had to give it back. Ah! I guess this is what love feels like.

Suzuki Hayate A fresh breeze for the Indian commuter

uzuki has got the first step right in launching its first mass market commuter bike. Bringing Salman Khan in to endorse its products, starting with the new Hayate, is going to bring in customers in droves to its showrooms. It seems its marketing team has been doing a good job. No doubt there’ll be plenty of Indians who’re going to be influenced by Salman Khan to buy this bike. But that’s just one part of the story.
What about the bike itself? Does it really live up to the image that Salman Khan has lent to it? Seems to me like it does. The Suzuki Hayate is a really nice bike to look at. The small design touches and flourishes make it stand out amongst the plethora of commuter bikes that are available in our market. One thing I noticed was the ample usage of plastic, made to look like faux carbon fibre, visible throughout the bike, including the dash, parts of the

side covers and other areas. Nice touch Suzuki! The first time I sat on the bike, it felt really comfortable and I wasn’t surprised when long commutes on the bike didn’t turn out to be tiring at all. It felt very natural sitting on the bike, although I personally would’ve liked the handle bars to be a bit lower. But that is something that I’m sure can be easily fixed. The bike felt very stable, even at higher speeds (by which I mean about 80km/hr), and was easily chuckable to the sides. It has great alloy wheels and gives an impression of a bigger displacement bike than it really is. The Hayate carries a 112.8cc engine
which is an air-cooled, 4 stroke, Single Overhead Cam (SOHC) unit. Suzuki gives official power ratings as 8.4bhp of power and 8.8Nm of torque. Enough, I’d say, especially if the bike doesn’t weigh more than a bag of vegetables. There is no option of a disc brake available, although again, for a bike of such light weight that hardly seems necessary. The rear suspension has a 5 step adjustable position that’ll make it easier for commuters of different heights to use the bike with ease. The Hayate has a four speed transmission (all down) which I personally found a bit hard to adjust to, since I’m used to bikes

with all-up or one-down-all-up gearing. Every time I braked I found it hard to shift down since I had to bring my foot all the way around to the bottom to do that. But again, that’s just a case of getting used to. Interestingly, even though this is supposed to be a mass market commuter bike where mileage is the single most important factor that the customer asks for, Suzuki curiously, does not mention anywhere its official mileage figures. Although it does point out that the Hayate has “Dabangg” mileage. We’ll just have to take their word for it I guess. One thing that I sorely

missed on the Hayate was the pass light switch. In a country that is infamous for its traffic rules (or rather the nonchalant breaking of it), and where honking is as much an uncontrollable disease as is TB, the absence of a pass light switch is utterly inexcusable. For now, Suzuki, it seems, has managed to provide the Indian commuter with a solid product that will be able to withstand the tough conditions that are going to be thrown at it on a daily basis. And all this for under 40 grand – now isn’t that a sweet cherry on top of the cake?

I had just finished a drive from Coimbatore to Munnar tea gardens and was keen to make the best of my trip to Kerala. I called up Mahindra’s corporate communication person Mohan Nair in Mumbai and sought a favour. This was the second time I was asking him for a vehicle to drive in Kerala. The first time, I drove their Mahindra Xylo from the Kochi airport towards Alappuzha and Kumarakom and back. I was now back at

the Kochi airport and was keen to drive all the way up to Kozhikode (Calicut) and then after a night’s halt, was keen to go to Wayanad. Mohan Nair obliged and I was handed over a Xylo vehicle at the Kochi Airport. After taking the directions from a local person there, we started off for Calicut Airport in the afternoon. Calicut Airport is situated in the picturesque Malappuram district of Kerala. The airport got its name from its neighbouring district Calicut almost 25

We reached the Calicut airport at 8 in the evening. The drive, except for a few diversions and rough roads, was not difficult. The Malappuram district of Kerala is home to thousands of Muslim families, many of them having at least one member employed in the Gulf region. According to the Kerala State website

The classic medieval centre of Vedic learning and politics, Thirunavaya, home of the traditional Ayurveda medicine, Kottakkal and the oldest centre of education of Islam, Ponnani are situated in Malappuram District along with economically booming towns like Manjeri (former capital of the Cholanaikkans), Perinthalmanna, Chemmad, Edappal, and Kottakkal. In 1921, present day Malappuram district witnessed devastating revolts

In the early years of the Communist rule in Kerala, Malappuram saw large land reforms under the Land Reform Ordinance. In early 1970s, with the oil boom happening, thousands of unskilled people migrated to the Gulf seeking fortunes. They sent money home, propping up a sleepy rural economy, and by late 20th century, the region had achieved first-world health standards and near universal literacy. The present development, both economic and social, of the Malappuram District owes to the Kerala Gulf diaspora, the website states. Malappuram district comprises a vast wildlife collection and a number of small hills, forests, little rivers and streams flowing to the west, backwaters and paddy, arecanut, cashew nut, pepper, ginger, pulses, coconut, banana, tapioca, and rubber plantations. one of two Muslim majority districts or Union Territories in south India, the other being Lakshadweep. The Hindu temples and Moplah mosques of the region are known for their colourful festivals. It is the most populous district in Kerala. After finishing our first assignment at the Calicut Airport, we left for Wayanad the following afternoon. Wayanad is around 80 odd kms from the Calicut Airport. Wayanad District, in the northeast of Kerala, was formed on November 1, 1980 as the 12th district, carved out of Kozhikode and Kannur districts. While driving into Wayanad one can see miles and miles of verdant forests. A lot of tribals live in this region. There are a lot of places one can visit in Wayanad. These include The Chembra Peak, Edakkal Cave, Kuruva lake, Lakkidi, Muthanga Wild Life Sanctuary, Pakshipathalam, Pookot Lake, Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, Kanthanpara Waterfalls and Banasurasagar Dam. driving back to Kochi. The Chembra peak, the highest hill in Wayanad, is near Meppady town. Trekking to the top of this peak takes almost a day. The scenic beauty of Wayanad, which is visible from the top of Chambra, is said to be breathtaking. The Edakkal Cave in the Ambukuthy mountain, is not a cave in the real sense. It is only a cleft. The rock wall inside contains some interesting carvings. The Kuruva Island consists of 950 acres of ever green forest on the tributaries of east flowing river Kabani. It is uninhabited with rare species of birds, orchids and herbs. It is 40 km north west of Sulthan Bathery. Lakkidi, one of the highest locations in Wayanad, commands a picturesque scenery. The Muthanga Wild Life Sanctuary, 16 km east of Sulthan Bathery, is located very near to the Karnataka border. This sanctuary is the biggest abode of wild animals in Malabar.

When we stepped into the Pookot Lake area, it began to rain and we had to run for shelter. We were content buying a few local items like spices, coffee etc from the shops there. The lake is a natural fresh water lake surrounded by green mountains. Boating facilities are also available. The rains followed us even as we went up to the Banasurasagar Dam. This is the largest earth dam in India. The topography here is such that many islands are formed in the upstream of the dam when the dam is full. We spotted a lone motor boat heading for the shore as the rains came pelting down. After a night’s halt in Calicut, we drove back to Kochi in our Xylo. The spacious utility vehicle from Mahindra proved to be a faithful friend to us as we drove hundreds of miles in one of the most scenic spots of Kerala. God’s own country? Well, I am beginning to get hooked on to that line!

Going gung-ho over Gung! Ravi V. Chhabra

o fathom Korean cuisine, one needs to know various facets of Korean culture, table manners, courtesies, and all that is intrinsically linked to it. I recall my first brush with Korean food was over a decade ago at a sprawling karaoke Korean restaurant in Greater Kailash II market called The Club. It was meant for connoisseurs of Korean food. With myriad South Korean companies flowering in the country in the 1990s – Daewoo, Hyundai, Samsung and LG, to name a few -- the restaurant, I recall, catered to expat Koreans. It started with a bang but downed shutters in almost a year. The food was good with a detailed menu and a live aquarium for relishing freshly cooked seafood. After a meal there I realised it would take me a lot more time to develop the taste buds for South Korean cuisine. Korean food needs well developed tastebuds to relish it. On my recent visit to a fine dining Korean restaurant called Gung – The Palace (pronounced goong) at Green Park in New Delhi, I found everything replete with aesthetics – the decor, the waitresses’ Korean uniform, floor-based seating and of course, the colourful array of delicious

dishes. The restaurant takes pride in having catered to the President of South Korea, Lee Myung-bak and his retinue. Undoubtedly, the amazing food is made passionately with every critical ingredient sourced directly from Korea including special spices and meats that are essential for authentic Korean flavours. My favourite dish was Jeongol (Hot pot) comprising prawns, shrimps, octopus, crabs and lobsters all perfectly cooked with vegetables and served in succulent broth on the table over a gas stove. At Gung, one gets the essence of Korea on the table. Tabletop barbecues, amazingly tender meats, flavourful vegetables and fresh seafood are part of ancient Korean traditions, combining that with Karaoke, present in both locations (Gurgaon has two dedicated, sound proof Karaoke rooms and a children’s play area). Gung at Green Park has three floors of seating with private dining rooms on the ground and second floors and regular table seating on the first floor and is open for lunch till 3pm and then opens for dinner after 6pm. You’ll find a dash of Korea in every dish and an extra hint of improvisation in some dishes like Budae Jjigae, which originated in the Korean War of 1950. A flavourful combination of gochujang (chili bean paste), kimchi, baked beans, meats, sausages, beef, noodles and American cheese that some may not think it to be an authentic Korean dish, which in fact is far from truth. The menu is divided into multiple sections: Lunch Specials, Barbecues, Stews,
www.carnstyle.com
Casseroles, Meat Specials, Korean Specials, Seafood Specials, Korean-Chinese, Mixed Rice and Noodles. This is so that the guests can find exactly what they’re looking for. If they feel like a barbecue accompanied by a spicy stew and rice... they know exactly where to find it. Some dishes are served in portions for four people and some in portions for one person depending on the dish. Vegetarians have plenty of options in the menu too. It’s advisable to order a hearty stew that’ll stay hot and steaming on the table accompanied by Gung’s signature banchan that are served complimentary with every order. Accompany these with grills or individual servings and you’ll find yourself gorging on hot and delicious food all through your evening. Remember to ask for portions of rice with stews if you so desire. In Korean food, Bap is the staple steamed rice. It may also include other grains and there are many kinds of Bap depending on the ingredients such as huinbap (white rice); jagokbap (rice with barley, millet and beans); byeolmibap (rice with vegetables, seafood and meat); and bibimbap (rice mixed with namul and beef). Side dishes include Guk (Soup) a soup of vegetables, seafood and/or meats. Some varieties are malgeun-jangguk (clear soy sauce soup), tojangguk (soybean paste soup), gomgguk (rich beef soup) and naengguk (chilled soup). Varieties of Jjigae (Stew) include Malgeunjjigae (clear jjigae) and tojang-jjigae (soybean paste jjigae). Jeongol (Hot pot) consists of meat, seafood, mushrooms and
vegetables simmered in broth at the table just before serving for dinner or as a dish to accompany liquor. Other main dishes include Jjim (Steamed dish) and Seon (Steamed or parboiled stuffed vegetables). Various kinds of dishes and diverse cooking methods include grilling, boiling, blanching, steaming, frying and braising. Jorim is a cooking method to braise meat, seafood or vegetables with soy sauce or red pepper paste on low heat. Bokkeum is a stir fry of meat, seafood or vegetables. Gui is a dish of meat, seafood or vegetables as is, or grilled after seasoning. Jeon is a dish of pan-fried meat, seafood or vegetables after they have been minced or sliced and coated with wheat flour and beaten eggs. Jeok is a dish of pan-fried ingredients after they have been seasoned and skewered. Some of the special Korean desserts include Tteok - a dish made by steaming, or boiling rice powder or other grain powder after it has been sprinkled with water. Hangwa are traditional Korean cookies. There are many varieties depending on the ingredients or recipes such as yumilgwa, gangjeong, sanja, dasik, jeonggwa, suksilgwa, gwapyeon, yeotgangjeong and yeot. Eumcheong are non-alcoholic beverages. Korean table manners worth a mention are: When having a meal together with elders, take your seat according to social ranking. After the elders pick up their spoons, others can begin to eat. Try to keep pace with elders while eating. Do not put your spoon and chopsticks on the table earlier than elders at the end of the meal. Do not hold the spoon and chopsticks together in one hand. Use the spoon for rice and soup. Gung’s location is hard to find with no directions close by. But those who have been to the Chinese restaurant ‘Scorpion Moon’ would find Gung in a jiffy. The entrance signboard is faded and barely visible. The stairs leading to the three floors inside are narrow and cumbersome. The recorded authentic Korean music lends the place a pleasant and refreshing ambience; the cuisine and overall dining experience is excellent. A non-vegetarian sea-food meal for two would cost around 2,500 and it’s worth it. Remember to take tips from the manager to order a balanced meal if you’re going for the first time.

Numerological Preparations: For the Number 1 Concept, report and photography: Jyoti Balani Food and location courtesy: Sigree, Pune, India Numerology, as we all know, is used to determine an individual’s personality, strengths and talents, obstacles, inner needs, emotional reactions and ways of dealing with others. These days a lot of people use numerology to examine their life, take advantage of unexplored opportunities, or simply figure out where to go next. But few people are aware there is a connection between food and numerology as well. Every number has both good as well as bad qualities. People associated with a particular number are more likely to suffer from a sickness owing to the ill effects connected with their numbers; which is why numerologists recommend foods that help in curing that particular weakness. We consulted prominent numerologist Swetta Jumaani and she came up with a list of ingredients suitable to each number starting from number 1. These ingredients were then passed onto talented chefs from Pune to create 6 unique recipes using their creativity and imagination. Needless to say the results were amazing and are here for all to see and try out these recipes.
Number 1: The natural leader
People born on the 1st, 10th, 19th and 28th in any month are termed as Number 1 people, ruled by the planet sun. Leos are also ruled by the sun, though indirectly. The sun, a creative force, is so powerful that it gives light and life to the universe. It has such radiance that we can hardly see any other planet or star, when the sun is in its element. Like the sun, Number 1 people usually like to lead from the front, and do better in positions of authority over others. They would usually prefer to be their own masters, or at least would feel more comfortable when in commanding positions, where they do not have to be answerable to many. That is why they should avoid partnerships. Such persons are creative, strongly individual, inventive and positive. On the downside, they are stubborn and determined with their approach toward others. It comes naturally to them to dominate those around them, and therefore their best sphere in life is in positions of authority, responsibility and trust over others. They can never play ‘second fiddle’ to anyone. Examples of some famous Number 1 people: Dhirubhai Ambani, Indira Gandhi, Rekha, Lata Mangeshkar, Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen, Dara Singh, Sunil Gavaskar, Hrithik Roshan, Ratan Tata. A Number 1 person is decidedly ambitious and hates any form of restraint. They always rise in whatever profession or occupation they choose and become heads of their department. Dhirubhai Ambani (December 28), Ratan Tata (December 28), Aishwarya Rai (November 1} {Rekha October 10).

Swetta Jumaani is from the famed Jumaani family, an ardent fan of her father, the eminent numerologist Bansilal M Jumaani, Swetta keenly studied this occult science of numerology under the competent guidance of her father who was a capable guru. Swetta Jumaani inaugurated her office in Pune on July 6, 2003. She created major ripples when her very first prediction on Aug 24 2003, regarding the effects of the planet Mars as it moves closer to the earth, rang true word by word. She can be contacted on www.jumaani.com. Here she tells us a little about number 1 people, their characteristics, their lucky colors, numbers, recommends the line of work that will benefit them, etc.
www.carnstyle.com
CUISINE LINE OF WORK:
A Number 1 person can do well as a successful company promoter, preacher, orator, organiser, or in any career that gives a position of authority. They may also do well in advanced inventions, research, medicine, the occult, sciences, astrology, telepathy, photography, interior or dress designing, music, art or any concentrated study or line of work, where the ‘mental’ aspect comes into play, and provided they are in a position of authority over others. They are so versatile that they can fit into almost any line they set their eyes on. This is their biggest strength, but ironically their major weakness too, as over-versatility can confuse them as to what they should actually follow.
LUCKY NUMBERS:
Their most important numbers and dates are ‘one’, ‘twos’, and ‘sevens’ and all their series, such as the 1st, 2nd, 7th, 10th, 11th, 16th, 19th, 20th, 25th, 28th, and 29th. They should endeavor to attempt their plans on any of these dates and will find a strong magnetic attraction to persons born on the above dates. They should make an effort to use the above dates while fixing up important appointments. They should also try to live in homes whose total, or last digit, makes one of these numbers.
LUCKY COLOURS:
Their lucky colors are that of the sun, which are gold, brown, orange and yellow. A Number 1 person is likely to suffer from heart problems, weak eyes, high blood pressure, weak bones, colds, depression and exhaustion. They should include the following ingredients in their diet:- carrots, sprouts, black lentils, green leafy vegetables, mint, anaar (pomegranate), almonds, soya oil, raisins, saffron, cloves, nutmeg, bay leaves, oranges, lemons, dates, thyme, Honey, ginger, barley, salad, fish, chicken, sweet potato.
In this feature Chef Sandeep Pandey has created an interesting menu using these ingredients especially for number 1 people.

n many ways, Le Meridien gave impetus to the wine culture in Pune by starting the trend of Sunday wine brunches and elegant five course wine dinners. Last year they launched Favola, their Italian specialty restaurant, which has taken a step further in encouraging the wine culture in the city with its splendid variety of wines both domestic and international, with excellent food to complement these wines. This wonderful eatery is already very popular with locals as well as tourists in Pune. This restaurant transports food lovers to Italy- the land of passion, intrigue and mystique. The décor: With a décor that boasts of white tones, soft lighting, large arched windows overlooking a leafy patio, walls of brick and stone, sepia tinted photographs of Italy, a stylized fireplace framed by wine racks at the bar, and a wine wall with a hand carved wooden rack, all add up to create an elegant ambience which hints at Mediterranean overtones. Easy going, quirky and free spirited, the ambience of this Italian restaurant is dappled and doused in natural light, muted conversations and wafting aromas! Undoubtedly, the name also lends an effervescent dimension. At the entrance, you are struck by the fashionable rusticity. White washed brick walls with lace-like embellishments arch gracefully between textured columns, interspersed with wine walls made of dark natural wood. Spacious dining tables covered with table cloth and chairs ensconced in mute coloured paisley patterned fabric add to the elegance and mystique of Favola. Enhanced subtle touches instantly transport you to a fairy tale Italian home. Adding the quirky element is a tall walnut brown tree trunk at the counter. Large windows open out to a lovely cozy patio with seating bordered with rich foliage. With an eye on the details, the décor has been done using natural wood, greenery, granite and marble. The

SPLURGE restaurant can seat 75 people and there is also a section for private dining which can accommodate 10 people. There is a separate area for a bar and a patio that can take in 25 people comfortably. The Chef and the cuisine: The open kitchen with a wood fired pizza oven is an additional attraction in this attractively designed restaurant. Master Chef Roberto Boggio has been in the food business for a substantial 27 years and it shows in the menu and food in Favola. Coming from a family of restaurateurs, he graduated from the well known and reputed Italian School of Culinary Arts and worked with Grand Master Chefs like Vergè, Girardet and Paul Bocouse. Well known for his appearances in the most popular Italian TV channel Rai Uno, he has competed in and conducted several public cooking sessions. He is an active member of the Italian Cooks Association. His in depth knowledge of Italian cuisine gives him the advantage of setting up Italian restaurants with leading international hotel chains all

over the world. He also holds the honors of second place in the Olympics of the Desserts in Turin, Italy for his extraordinary creation “Bavarese in Croccante di Mandole”. This celebrity chef from Piedmont, Northern Italy, known for his vast knowledge of authentic Italian cuisine and creativity has put together a menu that’s straight from the rustic kitchens of Italy. The menu: Italian home style cooking is the mainstay in this eatery with a selection of few but genuine preparations. Roberto is very particular about the quality of ingredients that are used for cooking in his kitchen. The menu is presented in a unique way in the form of a scroll with a handcrafted and embroidered leather band stamped with motifs of pasta shapes. The Favola menu offers a choice of antipasti, pasta, oven baked pasta, soups, risotto, mains, pizzas and delightful desserts. A large selection of antipasti, pasta, pizzas, salads, seafood, poultry and a selection of exotic desserts are just some of the

delicious options available. Try the Insalata alla Favola (a salad with roast mushrooms, home made sun dried tomatoes, thin slice of Parmesan cheese topped with balsamic vinegar and extra virgin oil from the antipasti section, the Ravioli alla Siciliana (homemade raviolis stuffed with minced seafood and mascarpone cheese served with lobster bisque sauce) from the Pasta section, Pizza in tazza ( the Chef’s pizza margherita soup), the Risotto con Scampi (prawns risotto in cream sauce), the Red Snapper Gamberoni in salsa di pepperoni e vaniglia e radicchio grigliato (grilled red snapper fish fillet and prawns served with bell pepper sauce and chicory salad) from the mains, Agnello Scottadito( grilled lamb rack served with carrots confit and spicy tomato marmalade), the Pizza Favola (mozzarella cheese, cherry tomatoes, smoked salmon and rocket salad) and the Tiramisu flavored with illy coffee and Amaretto di Saronna from the dessert section. Like every excellent restaurant, they are willing to tweak a dish according
to guest preferences. In fact Master Chef Roberto also goes out of his way to prepare dishes which may not be a part of the menu on the request of a guest. He says, “Italian food and recipes have survived the test of time as it has been handed down by a generation of women. A large part of what I cook is influenced by my grandmother’s kitchen. I whip up some of the most genuine Italian dishes for both Pune citizens and visitors. I am proud to be part of Favola and my objective is to demonstrate that Italian cuisine goes beyond just pizzas and spaghetti”. The service: Service is all smiles and warmth, quick and efficient, right from the graceful hostess who greets you to the table attendants. Italian food and wines go hand in hand. Favola has an extensive list of 100 labels including Champagnes, reds, whites, roses and sparkling wines. Pairing wines and recommending the right wines with food has always been Le Meridien Pune’s forte and this is exactly what Favola’s staff does.
