Welcome back AAA for an informative presentation that will provide older drivers and their families with practical strategies to plan ahead and support safe driving for as long as possible. This course does not qualify for an auto insurance discount.

Kata (The Tai Chi of Karate)

Sat., Sept. 6–27, 9:45 – 10:45a.m., Free w/ Registration

This is a movement class open to all abilities, ages 18+. We will practice set sequences of moves which flow almost like a dance. They are called ‘Kata’, originating from traditional Japanese martial arts, which are a corner stone of basic martial arts training. This is a NON-contact class and aims to aid attention, focus, balance and mobility. Instructors also lead Shotokai Karate on Saturdays at 10:45 a.m. This offering requires a membership to the American KDS, https://shotokai.org/.

Managing Arthritis and Chronic Joint Pain

Monday, Sept. 8, 1 – 2 p.m., Free, Drop-in

Dr. Scott Sebastian, a renowned specialist in regenerative medicine, will discuss how and why arthritis occurs, and how to cope with sore and painful shoulders, knees, feet, and spines. Nutrition, joint exercise, common medications and the latest techniques in regenerative medicine will be reviewed.

The class will begin with a breathing meditation and move into gentle Restorative poses. It is for all levels and introduces the benefits of each pose.

Emergency Preparedness – Wildfire & More

The 2014 Poinsettia Fire forced many residents to evacuate Carlsbad. The recent LA Fires remind us that we need to be prepared for emergencies of all kinds. Our instructor, Mike McMahon, will share the story of his family’s evacuation from a wildfire in 2007 and 2014. He will present an organized and thoughtful approach that will allow you to formulate a family emergency plan, assemble an emergency supply kit, and calmly and efficiently evacuate your home, if necessary. Earthquake preparedness will also be discussed.

Work with Master Gardener Jano Nightingale to plant and care for the Senior Center raised bed vegetable garden at the Pine Avenue Community Garden. Plant selection, pruning, fertilization, and organic insect and disease control will be covered. Bring your own tools.

Courtyard Concert: Mocha Tones

Specializing in Jazz Standards, Motown, Country, Show Tunes, and popular songs from the 1920’s through the 2020’s. Mocha Tones has a unique mix of genres with something for everyone!

Excursion: Cabrillo National Monument Thursday, Sept. 18, 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., $17

Explore the iconic lighthouse, stroll scenic walking paths, and enjoy sweeping coastal views. Learn about the park’s rich history, natural wonders, and cultural significance while taking in one of San Diego’s most treasured landmarks. Congregate Lunch Service

• Join us for a nutritious lunch on weekdays at the Carlsbad Senior Center First-time attendees must fill out a San Diego County Intake form.

60+ years: $3.50 suggested voluntary contribution *

Guests 50–59 years: $5 fee

Guests under 50 years: $5 fee and must be accompanied by a senior

• The dining room is open from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and meals are served from 12 to 12:45 p.m.

• No outside food is permitted in the dining room, per San Diego County Health Code.

Transportation Service

• Need a ride to lunch? Transportation is available on weekdays for Carlsbad residents 60+ who cannot drive. Advanced registration and approval are required. Participants must be fully independent and ambulatory. The suggested voluntary contribution for this service is $4 per roundtrip *

Home Meal Delivery Service

• Homebound Carlsbad residents 60+ may qualify for home-delivered meals! Senior Center staff can help you complete the required intake form and will conduct a home visit to determine eligibility. The suggested voluntary contribution for this service is $5 per meal *

• To register or with questions about eligibility, please call the Carlsbad Senior Center Nutrition team at 442–339–2651.

• For questions about the menu, delivery changes, or volunteer driver opportunities, please call Meals on Wheels North County at 760–736–9900.
