If you’re new to Key Club, you might get confused by terms and acronyms used at meeting and in this News letter. Definitely check out the Acronym explanations on page 12. I’ve also provided more explanation to events that go above the club level. If you’re unsure about the levels of Key Club take a look at page 16.

Hey Everyone!

For this September release, I have implemented a fall theme! Feel free to reach out with any questions about Key Club and feedback you have for the newsletter :)

I hope you all had a great start to your school year! If you’re thinking about joining a club, Key Club is a great choice since it has fun social events, events that benefit the community and give you service hours, and it has a lot of leadership opportu nities including committees and internship opportunities. Also, we have an upcoming ice cream social on Septem ber third! It’s a great way to make some friends, eat free ice cream, and experience the welcoming and fun side of Key Club

Best, Alice Finkelstein Senior 2022-2023806047@seq.orgPresident

I hope your school year is off to a great start. It was so great meet ing you at our first club meeting of the school year and at our vari ous events throughout August! We started off our member recruitment in mid-August with the freshman orientation clubs fair and we’ll be continuing to recruit new members throughout September. Thank you to all of the new members who have joined, we can’t wait to have you with us this year! We also hosted Di vision 34 North’s first Division Council Meeting (DCM) of the school year, where we made notes to middle schoolers and origami bookmarks, hosted a book drive, and had so cial activities such as an apple-eating contest. Other event highlights from August include the San Carlos Family Campout, where members helped serve breakfast and led arts and crafts, the Redwood Shores Annual Levee Cleanup, and the San Carlos Kiwanis’ Luau Fundraiser!

We have lots of exciting events planned for September, including notecard making for Ukrainian refugees, a Carlmont campus clean up, and helping out at Nesbit’s “It’s a Party” event where we’ll be running various games. We have plenty of Zoom events throughout the month too, so you can complete service from any location! I also highly recommend attending our Beginning of the Year Ice Cream Social on 9/3 to learn all about Key Club and get to meet us! We will continue our weekly club meetings on Thursdays at lunch in Room D12 - I hope to see you there :)

On August 6th our club joined a zoom club for our event. The event’s goal was to make soul boxes for the victims of a shooting. We spent about 2 hours creating the origami boxes to later send in through the mail. The experience was great, it was relaxing and fun to make the boxes and allowed me to relax during a stress ful week. I also thought that it was a great opportunity to give back to those who are grieving in an accessible way. Overall, I had fun and felt sympathy for the victims involved.

The San Carlos Family Campout was a lively event hosted by San Carlos Parks & Recreation at Burton Park. Families brought tents and chairs to set up on the baseball field, then enjoyed fun-filled activities Key Club set up and games such as s’mores making, barbeque, ring toss, and crafts! The magical night ended with a showing of the Disney movie Encanto, which everyone enjoyed before sleepily turning in to tents for the night. In the morning, vol unteers served a delicious breakfast of juice, coffee, and donuts. This event was definitely one of my favorites! It was so sweet to see everyone together as a community and having fun, which was much needed, especially after the COVID-19 lockdown. volunteers for San Carlos Family

The San Carlos Kiwanis’ Luau Fundraiser event raises money to benefit our local youth & activities, community service projects, scholarships, and school Service Leadership programs. We were able to set up some of the event, assist at the check-in room, sell raffle tickets, help with the auction winners, and clean up. It was a really great experience meeting everyone, watching the entertainment, and also for club bonding. We also got free dinner and were able to bring home some leftovers! We had 10 volunteers for a total of 48 hours.

2007. The club hosts this event every two years to raise funds to support their local community their sponsored Key Clubs.

At Freshman Clubs Fair which took place one day before school started, Key Club had a booth to recruit new members. In total, 40 people visited our booth! Committed to helping the community through service, our officers showed fresh men the benefits of joining. These include open leadership, community service hours, and a strong sense of community! If you’re interested in joining Key Club, definitely attend our weekly Thursday meetings!

At Freshman Orientation, members of the board recruited new members for Key Club!

Cranes for a Cure

10 Volunteers for 30.17 hours

The Cranes for a Cure service event took place on August 7th over Zoom. During this event, volunteers used colorful paper to fold origami cranes. We went into breakout rooms and were able to talk to other participants through out the two hours of folding. These cranes will later be delivered to an organi zation called Joey’s Wings, which supports those who have pediatric cancer. They’ll either be strung into garlands and sold to generate funding for cancer research, or gifted to young patients. Overall this event was really fun, and it was rewarding to know our work will directly help raise money to support the fight against pediatric cancer!

DCMs (Division Council Meetings) are when all the key clubs in our area from diffferent high schools like Carlmont, Notre Dame, and Aragon all meet to update each other on how each club is progressing. This month, Carlmont hosted the event! There are also always fun events! In this DCM, there was an apple eating contest, a service event, and cupcakes!

The August DCM was hosted by Carlmont’s key club this month at Laurelwood Park in San Mateo. This was my first in-person DCM so it was really great to meet Key Club members from other schools. There was a book drive so many people brought piles of books to donate. We made origami bookmarks and wrote en couraging notes to incoming middle schoolers. Lastly, we ended with an apple eating contest which was very fun and delicious, and celebrating our LTG, John’s birthday with cupcakes. Overall, this was a great DCM experience and I am look ing forward to attending more in the future.

The initiative emphasizes Key Club’s aspect of being a service organization, allowing members to focus on this purpose through out the month of September.

- 18 regions

As a new member, Key Club’s structure may seem confusing, but the diagram above is a greatly helpful resource that breaks everything down. Our club is just a small part of a very large organization that is split into the following four levels: Club, Division, District, and International.

- District level is all of the divisions in a selected area (ours is all divisions from Cali fornia, Nevada, and Hawaii)

- Our district (CNH) is the largest of all 33 districts of Key Club International with:

Key Club Int’l encom passes all clubs with in its 33 districts and other countries not included in a district

- 44,000 members

Each division is made up of various clubs in a defined territory led by a Lieutenant Governor Division 34 North

- The divison is in charge of overseeing a set number of clubs (15 for D34N) and guiding them through events with other clubs, connecting them to the district and international level, and merging everyone together into one Key Club family.

Intro to Key Club Structure

- Key Club International is made up of all of the Key Clubs around the world. An international event that you can attend this term is ICON in person or virtually July 6-10. **See page 20 for more details.

- Club represents anything that you do solely for our club, whether that be partici pate in a fundraiser, running for a position as a committee member, etc.

Each club is made up of at least 15 members led by a President Carlmont Key Club
