Happy Holiday!

I wish you luck with review week and finals! Luckily we are in the holiday season! Key Club has so many events this December that help spread joy throughout the community.

On December 2nd, Key Clubbers volunteered in 3 hours shifts at the annual Night of Holiday of Lights! Some upcoming holiday-themed events include the December DCM, writing holiday cards to homebound seniors, and San Carlos toy workshop. The last seasonal event to look forward to is the D34N & D34S Holiday-a-thon. The division leadership team is working hard to create a fun event in early January for Key Clubbers across Divsion 34 to bond and celebrate everyone’s dedication and hard work!

Don’t forget to complete at least 15 service hours with Key Club from August to December this month and receive a Distinguished Service Award recognition at the End-Of-1st-Semester Celebration/Recognition to be scheduled in early January 2023. Sign up at the December SignUp Genius: https://bit.ly/December2022Events to reach your goal! Ask the club secretaries your current total service hours since August.

Near the start of next semester, we will be restarting our internship program! This is a chance for any Key Club member to shadow officers and get more involved with the club! We will also announce the club election of officers schedule in January.

Hey Scots!

I hope your holiday season is off to a fantastic start. Thank you to everyone who participated in our November events. We had over 10 events last month, along with our Thanksgiving potluck and interclub. Our zoom events also went great - some highlights included making origami turkeys and writing holiday cards for hospitalized children. Members also had a blast at the November DCM. I am so glad that our club is able to produce such high-quality service. Our Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) fundraiser is still ongoing, so please reach out to your family and friends to solicit donations!

A Message fro m your

As for December, we have many holiday events planned. We’ve started off the month with the wonderful Night of Holiday Lights event, where 25 volunteers assisted in running craft and activity booths. Other another great event this month San Carlos Holiday Workshop + Toy Drive. Be sure to sign up for any events that you can make and give back in the spirit of the holiday season! With the Member Recognition Program (MRP) due date coming up at the end of January, be sure to continue earning service hours if you want to qualify for an award.

Thank you for making our first semester so amazing! A warm welcome to all of the new members who have joined us. Good luck on your finals too :)

As always, feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns!

Fundraising Committee Chair Sophmore

Hi Everyone! We have the PTP bracelet fundraiser going on right now through December. Donors will receive a free Carlmont x PTP bracelet made by our Key clubbers to thank them for their donation! Our key-clubbers have been working hard on these bracelets for the last few months. PTP helps children injured or killed by trauma, which is the leading cause of death and injury among children ages 14 and under in the United States. It is really important to support their mission. The more you raise the better! Please approach people you know - friends, family, neighbors, etc. You can get service hours for this. Also, please promote and encourage your committees. Thank you for helping support these children and our club goals. Here is the google form: https://forms.gle/Jdy7aspcHuvydJ4m8. Donors can get a handmade bracelet for donations for over 5 dollars.

November School Clean-Up

16 volunteers for 21.5 hours

The event was cleaning up the school grounds with gloves and a plastic bag. At the event I cleaned up the school grounds with my friends for an hour. When I was doing the clean up I thought it needed more materials provided for the volunteers. We only had gloves that ripped easily and I personally thought we would have had more fun if we had some kind of motivation other than volunteer hours and making the school cleaner.

25 volunteers for San Carlos 12th Annual

The San Carlos Night of Holiday Lights is an annual event that takes place on Laurel Street. Each year, there are games, performances, food, and crafts that kids of all ages come to enjoy. This was one of my favorite events I went to as a freshman and I have gone every year since - I’m so sad that this is my last one as a senior!! At the event, Key Clubbers helped set up various stations and run the craft booths where kids made snowman tealights, pipe cleaner snowflakes, and decorated coloring pages. Despite the cold, I loved getting to interact with all of the little kids and help them create their various projects. It helped me get into the holiday spirit with the Christmas music playing, fake snow falling, and hot chocolate drinking. The Night of Holiday Lights is one of the best ways to ring in the holiday season while giving back to the community and interacting with little kids!

Holiday Cards for Hospitalized Kids Event

12 volunteers for 23.25 hours

On Sunday, December 4, Sara Wilkinson hosted the “Holiday Cards for Hospitalized Kids” event on Zoom. Several Key Club members joined, and we spent the meeting crafting uplifting holiday cards. After we finished, we sent them to Cards for Hospitalized Kids, an organization that distributes handmade cards to Children’s Hospitals around the country. During the cardmaking process, some people chose to go into breakout rooms to chat while making their cards, and others worked silently. We used our own materials such as markers, stickers, and paper to decorate the cards and write warm greetings and encouraging words. When 2 hours passed, we all reconvened and took a group picture, showing off our cards. After the event, I felt happy and hoped that the cards would brighten the day of whoever received them. Overall, the event was fulfilling as it was a chance to create something nice that another person could enjoy.

4 Carlmont Attendees 4 service hours November DCM

On November 20, several Key Clubs from different schools gathered at Beresford Park for the division council meeting (DCM) of the month. The DCM was combined with a service project to design meal bags for Meals on Wheels. Some people, including myself, also donated to the food drive. The meeting started off with saying the key club pledge, and then the person who led the meeting checked in to see how many people there were from each club and to ask recent club updates. They also recognized their amazing apes, which are clubs, members, advisors, and officers who worked especially hard this month. After more updates and upcoming events, we took a group photo and got right to the service. I also saw the spirit stick for the first time, and it looked really cool! I was really glad to have the opportunity to do what I like best, designing, while also knowing that the drawings will be given with food for people who need it to have a great Thanksgiving.

Safeway Nourishing Neighbors Food Drive

12 volunteers for 26.3 hours

On November 19, 2022 Carlmont Key Club and the San Carlos Kiwanis Club handed out flyers at the Belmont and Foster City Safeway Stores asking shoppers to donate $10 to provide assistance to local hunger relief organizations through Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. A $10 donation is the equivalent of a bag of food. Twelve (12) Key Club Volunteers handed out hundreds of flyers at each location and acombined total of 205 “bags” of food and $112 was received. I have been volunteering at the annual Safeway Food Drive for the past nine years. This volunteer opportunity is very meaningful because the Safeway Nourishing Neighbors Food Drive is all about helping those in our own community with needed food for Thanksgiving. It is such an important program and I enjoy talking with shoppers and asking them to support this program. So many of the Safeway shoppers take our flyers and as they leave the store let us know that they donated and appreciate our work.

THE KIWANIS FAMILY November SOSP

What does SOSP stand for?

SOSP stands for Spotlight on Service Program. Every month we have a different organization that we direct our service projects towards.

Annual Safeway Nourishing Neighbors Food Drive

On November 19th, we worked with our Kiwanis division to ask Safeway shoppers to donate $10 to assist local hunger relief organizations through the Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. Second Harvest is currently serving over 450,000 people facing Food Insecurity. This includes an increase of over 80% since the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Kiwanis is not just a global organization, but a family. The Kiwanis Family has been serving Key Club since 1925 through its sponsored leadership clubs to “help people of all ages develop the heart to serve, answer the call to lead and accept the courage to engage.” During the month of November, CNH puts its volunteer efforts towards recognizing the hours the Kiwanis Family dedicates annually to raise money for global causes & improving our overall community.

There are several ways to participate in this month’s SOSP! Having interclubs, letters to Kiwanis, and bingo nights are some ideas given by CNH. Our club was involved in this SOSP through the Kiwanis DCM! It was both an interclub and a DCM which allowed us to bond with other members of Key Club and another branch of our organization.

SOSP: Spotlight on Service Program

Intro to Key Club Structure

Each club is made up of at least 15 members led by a President Carlmont Key Club

Each division is made up of various clubs in a defined territory led by a Lieutenant Governor Division 34 North

Each district is made up of one or more states led by a Governor Cal-Nev-Ha District

Key Club Int’l encompasses all clubs within its 33 districts and other countries not included in a district

As a new member, Key Club’s structure may seem confusing, but the diagram above is a greatly helpful resource that breaks everything down. Our club is just a small part of a very large organization that is split into the following four levels: Club, Division, District, and International.

- Club represents anything that you do solely for our club, whether that be participate in a fundraiser, running for a position as a committee member, etc.

- The divison is in charge of overseeing a set number of clubs (15 for D34N) and guiding them through events with other clubs, connecting them to the district and international level, and merging everyone together into one Key Club family.

- District level is all of the divisions in a selected area (ours is all divisions from California, Nevada, and Hawaii)

- Our district (CNH) is the largest of all 33 districts of Key Club International with: - 44,000 members

- 763 Key Clubs

- 80 divisions

- 18 regions

- Key Club International is made up of all of the Key Clubs around the world. An international event that you can attend this term is ICON in person or virtually July 6-10. **See page 20 for more details.
