Chipman dinner theatre marks 10 years with four sold out shows BY JOHN MATHER Ten years ago, Bruce McGregor had a vision to do something to provide some entertainment for the Village of Chipman. “He wanted to undertake the project,” said Kieron Willis, president, director and actress with the Chipman Players Community Dinner Theatre group. “So he approached the Village to see if they could use the hall. The village was willing and then he went seeking some actors and away it went.” All the proceeds from the performances go to provide upgrades to the hall which have included new floors and dishes during the past 10 years. She said there were about 15 players who came out in the first year

to perform “Pony Expresso” a play by Rachel Davidson. “We now have about 15 actors and actresses” said Willis. “Plus another 12 or 13 volunteering to cook the dinner.” She said for the volunteers it’s the same people who always come out. This year, the players will present “Millie Monka and the Salmon Cannery” a play written by Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus. The play will be presented to four sold out shows beginning this Saturday, Mar. 7, with additional performances Mar. 13, 14, and 21. The evening performance on March 13 will see doors open at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. and the play beginning at 8:30 p.m.

The other three performances will have doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. and the performance beginning at 7:30 p.m. And the dinners for the event vary also. For this year, organizers had hoped to have salmon but the cost was prohibitive. So on Mar 7 and 13, there will be meat balls and fried chicken with pyrogies, creamed potatoes, salad, cornmeal, vegetables and a nice dessert. The Mar. 14 event will feature baked ham and sweet and sour meatballs with all the trimmings. The final performance will see patrons enjoying roast beef with all the fixings. Performers in this year’s production include: Terry Andriuk,

Carol Stribling, Joyce Dobirsten, Don McBride, Rick Rafuse, Caren Cossey-Kwasnycia, Bruce McGregor, Jo-Ann Fontaine, Tania Davis, Keiron Willis, Tom Hrehorets, Stephanie Harrold, and June Lambkin.

While not an audience participation performance, Willis says it’s designed for maximum audience entertainment with lots of local flavour. “It’s always a fun production for us,” said Willis. “We make sure we include a few sur-

prise twists and the play is always changed to include local place names and some local individuals.” The play will be hosted at the Chipman National Hall at 4715 50 St.

Chipman players Terry Andriuk, left, Bruce McGregor, centre, and Don McBride, right, rehearse their roles for the upcoming play “Molly Monka and the Salmon Cannery,” or there’s something fishy going on, which has its debut this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The will be three additional performances of the play Mar. 13, 14 and 21 at the Chipman National Hall.
