Chipman Players sell out 4 shows

The Lamont Leader (Lamont, Alberta), Wednesday, February 26, 2020 - 11 BY JOHN MATHER Ten years ago, Bruce McGregor had a vision to do something to provide some entertainment for the Village of Chipman.

“He wanted to undertake the project,” said Kieron Willis, president, director and actress with the Chipman Players Community Dinner Theatre group. “So he approached the Village to see if they could use the hall. The village was willing and then he went seeking some actors and away it went.”

All the proceeds from the performances go to provide upgrades to the hall which have included new floors and dishes during the past 10 years. She said there were about 15 players who came out in the first year to perform “Pony Expresso” a play by Rachel Davidson.

“We now have about 15 actors and actresses” said Willis. “Plus another 12 or 13 volunteering to cook the dinner.”

She said for the volunteers it’s the same people who always come out.

This year, the players will present “Millie Monka and the Salmon Cannery” a play written by Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus.

The play will be presented to four sold out shows beginning this Saturday, Mar. 7, with additional performances Mar. 13, 14, and 21. The evening performance on March 13 will see doors open at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. and the play beginning at 8:30 p.m. The other three performances will have doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. and the performance beginning at 7:30 p.m.

And the dinners for the event vary also.

For this year, organizers had hoped to have salmon but the cost was prohibitive.

So on Mar 7 and 13, there will be meat balls and fried chicken with pyrogies, creamed potatoes, salad, cornmeal, vegetables and a nice dessert. The Mar. 14 event will feature baked ham and sweet and sour meatballs with all the trimmings. The final performance will see patrons enjoying roast beef with all the fixings. Performers in this year’s production include: Terry Andriuk, Carol Stribling, Joyce Dobirsten, Don McBride, Rick Rafuse, Caren Cossey-Kwasnycia, Bruce McGregor, Jo-Ann Fontaine, Tania Davis, Keiron Willis, Tom Hrehorets, Stephanie Harrold, and June Lambkin. While not an audience participation performance, Willis says it’s designed for maximum audience entertainment with lots of local flavour. “It’s always a fun production for us,” said Willis. “We make sure we include a few surprise twists and the play is always changed to include local place names and some local individuals.”

The play will be hosted at the Chipman National Hall at 4715 50 St. Chipman players Terry Andriuk, left, Bruce McGregor, centre, and Don McBride, right, rehearse their roles for the upcoming play “Molly Monka and the Salmon Cannery,” or there’s something fishy going on, which has its debut this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The will be three additional performances of the play Mar. 13, 14 and 21 at the Chipman National Hall. Chipman dinner theatre marks 10 years with four sold out shows

1373-697)087(

BY JOHN MATHER The change of ownership of Mundare’s Whitetail Golf Course should have nothing but positives for the local track, according to general manager Laurent LeBlanc.

The course, originally designed by the Puddiecombe Golf Group, was sold to Edmonton’s Country Club Tour with the sale being finalized Mar. 1.

“We always said the course could be sold if the right buyer came along,” said LeBlanc, who was a part owner of Whitetail. “When Country Club Tour came along, it was the perfect fit for us.”

The Country Club Tour owns and operates Edmonton’s Raven Crest, Sandpiper and River Ridge Golf Courses, along with Montgomery Glen in Wetaskiwin.

Prior to Mar.1, Country Club Tour was promoting a special pass card that if purchased for $100 would give golfers discounts on green fees at any of the now five Country Club Tour courses. After Mar.1, the pass doubled to $200.

“The new owners will be able to put some money into the course if the need arises,” he added.

LeBlanc said it will pretty much be status quo when the course opens later this spring. “I’ll be staying on as general manager and Trevor our superintendent for the past several years is also staying on,” said LeBlanc. “It will be a lot of the same staff. If anything we’ll be adding staff because we’re expecting to see more rounds played this year.” He said there are no immediate changes planned for the course, but “we have had some drainage issues over the years and that’s one of the first things we talked to them about. They’re willing to share equipment between the other courses and that will allow us more ability to mow down our fescue.” He said there was more budget money available with the new owners so there would be additional fertilizer and other supplies available.

“We definitely expect the course to step up a notch this year.”

LeBlanc said Whitetail has always struggled with leagues because of its distance from a population centre.

“Our men’s league has struggled the past few years but we’ll still have it this year on Wednesday night. I think we’ll also be trying to get a ladies league going on Thursday nights.”

LeBlanc added he’d like to see more events at the course to involve the community.

“We’d like to maybe try some special meal events on Friday nights and get more people out sitting on the patio.”

He added the number of tournaments will increase.

“Country Club Tours, has always had a lot of tournaments, but they also have a huge amount of walk in traffic,” he said. “So I told them I’d take any tournaments they could throw our way, so I’m expecting we’ll see a lot more tournaments.”

LeBlanc has been associated as both owner and manager at Whitetail Crossing since 2009 a few years after the course opened.

For the value conscious golfer, LeBlanc says the price point is what brings the golfers out.

“We had lost a lot of business to Country Club Tours because of their golf pass,” he said. “There aren’t the golfers around anymore who will pay $70 to $100 for a round of golf right now with our economy the way it is.”

He said green fees will remain the same at the course for this year. There will be no special rates such as seniors or two for one rates.

“We want to push everyone towards the card pass,” he said.

He added Country Club Tour also has a golf centre near the Kingsway Airport in Edmonton where a weekend duffer can go and practice on golf simulators before the season begins. Town a of MundTown rea dna606 nausruP

BY JOHN MATHER Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs is both infuriated and very worried as a result of Teck Frontier cancelling their plans for a mega project in Northern Alberta.

The Teck Frontier mine in northern Alberta had met all the environmental approvals required and had the support of indigenous bands in the area. It would have created 7,000 jobs, and been a world leader in environmental responsibility.

“This (approval) should be a no brainer,” said Stubbs, during Alberta Industrial Heartland stakeholders day Jan. 30. “This was approved by the regulators in July and should have been given the green light by the Liberals in August.

“They have until the end of the month to approve it and now the minister has come out and said they (the Liberals) may delay it until May.”

“I think this a very dangerous signal already and I’m wondering if they’re just delaying to try and find a reason or way to reject it.”

In a letter, the president of Teck Frontier said the company had decided to shelve the project one week before the Liberal government was expected to make a decision to approve or reject the project.

Stubbs, the Conservative Natural Resources critic, stood up in the House of Commons in the past week calling for an emergency debate to discuss the cancelation of the Teck Frontier project. “I asked for it first on the Monday following Teck’s withdrawal, and then I asked again on the Tuesday and it was finally granted.

“The letter clearly confirms it is policy uncertainty and a lack of clarity on behalf of the government that has caused this cancellation.”

“Another thing was public safety,” she added. “It’s been three weeks of the prime minister doing basically nothing about the blockades acoss the country. “Teck, I’m sure, was worried that all hell could break loose with protests and they don’t know if the government is going to have their backs,” she fumed. “It was totally approved in July and should have been given the go ahead in August.”

She said the Liberals were looking at new ways to delay the project as they heard from central Canadian MPs in their party who were worried about climate change and emissions.

“Some of the things they were looking for aren’t found in any Canadian legislation,” explained Stubbs. “Yet Teck said they would meet net zero emissions by 2050, something not required. You’d be hard pressed to find another company that would make this commitment.” She also blamed the Liberals for trying to deflect the blame to the Alberta government.

“But Alberta did agree to a cap,” she said. “But there were Liberal MPs pushing an e-petition against Teck. The majority of Liberal caucus members were against it.”

“They said they need to consider new information, but what information,” she asked?

“There was no new information that was required in the regulatory filings.” she stated. “The Liberals were trying to defeat the project by death by delay.”

“What’s happening here should alarm every single Canadian,” Stubbs went on. “The Liberals are destroying Canada’s reputation as a place to do business.

“Companies are leaving Canada and ramping up energy projects elsewhere in the world,” she stated.

The Teck Frontier project is the 11th mega project to be cancelled since the Liberals come to office, she added.

Stubbs said she is deeply concerned about Western separation with the cancellation.

“Pundits dismiss this and say it won’t happen, but I take this very seriously. The people outside of the west really have no idea how strong these sentiments are.”

BY JANA SEMENIUK The Chipman National Hall was bustling with activity, Feb. 29, as the seventh annual Firefighters Ball got underway.

In spite of icy highway conditions, more than 80 people made their way to enjoy a roast beef dinner and support their local firefighters.

“We had a pretty good turnout,” said Collette McBride, secretary/treasurer for the Chipman Fire Brigade. “We had a few people that cancelled due to the road conditions, but otherwise it was pretty good.” Jackie ArmstrongHomeniuk, MLA for Vegreville-Fort Saskatchewan, was scheduled to deliver a speech at the event, however was not able to attend due to the weather.

“Her assistant called me in the afternoon to let me know she was out visiting constituents and having trouble travelling due to the weather,” said McBride.

As the Firefighter’s Ball occurred on Feb. 29, a leap day theme of leaping frogs was included in the decor.

“We had plastic leaping frogs and instructions for people to make origami frogs on all of the tables,” said McBride. “Everyone had a lot of fun with those.” In addition to the fun with frogs, guests enjoyed having a beautiful carved roast beef dinner, silent auction, 50/50 draw as well as a live band.

“The 50/50 draw ended up with $233 going to the winner,” McBride added.

Regional Fire Chief David Zayonce was also on hand to present two peer-voted awards for firefighters on the Chipman team.

Officer of the Year went to Theo Wallace for his work and dedication to the fire team over the past 10 years. McBride added that Wallace was appreciated for the ‘little, behind-the-scenes’ things he does, such as organize fire fighter training sessions.

Firefighter of the Year was awarded to Kattilyna Keohane who has been a part of the Chipman Firefighters for the past three years. She was awarded for her outstanding effort during training and responding to calls.

The event raised a total of $1,273 18 - The Lamont Leader (Lamont, Alberta), Wednesday, March 4, 2020

“I know some of my closer friends and some of my volunteers would then strongly consider the movement,” she said. “I’m trying to fight for Alberta and Canada and I am doing that not only yelling in the House of Commons but quietly with diplomacy behind the scenes.”

“Albertan’s don’t fall for the Liberal rhetoric,” she stated.

“I know most Albertans know the prime minister wants to phase out the oilsands. What he’s done through every policy and message is try to achieve this goal.”

Stubbs got reprimanded when she asked Justin Trudeau whether he wanted to see Alberta separate in the House of Commons.

“Teck is just the latest flashpoint in a national unity crisis,” she said.

“It just inflames the situation,” she added.

She added she is aware there are some longtime Liberal members who recognize Alberta has a good reputation, but they can’t get their message heard within their caucus.
