for art fundraiser Bruderheim Fire Dept. continues quest to be top fundraiser

BY JANA SEMENIUK The Bruderheim Fire department held an Art After Dark event, Feb. 28, to further their efforts in becoming the top fundraisers for their annual Stair Climb event happening this May in Calgary.

The event allowed participants to learn how to paint a 12 x 16-inch picture of Baby Yoda while enjoying drinks and conversation at the Victoria Hotel in Bruderheim.

The painting lesson was guided by artist Tyler Dianocky, and tickets were sold through Eventbrite.

“Anything that involves people doing an activity is great for fundraising,” said Dianocky. “And at the end they get to take something home and share with friends and family.”

Correen Hosack, the Bruderheim firefighter who is also the team captain for the Stair Climb event, joined the participants to paint Baby Yoda for the Art After Dark event.

“We sold 17 tickets and raised $255,” said Hosack. “Every little bit helps.”

Not to be confused with the local Stair Climb event in Sept. which honours fallen first responders of 9-11, the Calgary Stair Climb event, which has taken place each May for the past six years, supports people living with cancer and was first inspired by Kathy Blas who lost her brother, firefighter Gord Paul, to occupational cancer in 2007.

Firefighters will ascend the BOW building, which is 775 vertical feet or 1,204 steps, in full firefighting gear. The climb starts at 3,400 feet above sea level and will be timed.

Hosack added that currently there are 22 firefighters, from Bruderheim, Lamont, Chipman and Andrew, who are signed up to participate in the Stair Climb.
