The fundraiser, which sold hamburgers for $5 each in support of the school’s breakfast program, sold out the 96 hamburgers available after 45 minutes of sales. “I was the one grilling back there. We sold out of all 96 burgers. I just kept grilling,” said math teacher Allan Hope with a laugh.

The school’s breakfast program was facing hard times after their chief supplier of bread and baked goods, Cobbs, in Fort Saskatchewan shut their doors this past Jan. “We used to pick up bread every Monday from Cobbs,” said Lamont High School principal Amit Mali.

Mali noted that the program uses between eight and ten loaves of bread daily and feeds 120 – 130 kids per day during the 40-minute flex time after the first period.

Mali added that there was huge concern for the future of the program once Cobbs closed their doors.

“Because the bread was being donated, it allowed us to take care of the butter and jam. There was a point when we first found out about it (Cobb’s closure) that we were concerned we wouldn’t be able to continue (the program),” he said. “We figured out we would need about $8,000 - $9,000 a year to maintain the breakfast program.”

Mali reached out to the community for help.

“The community has really come together to help us. I’m confident we can make it through to June, but I’m not sure how we will continue next September,” he said.

Mali added that if anyone would like to help contribute to the breakfast program please contact him at Lamont High School.
