Introducing
Caribbean Maritime University
W
elcome to the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) - a specialized maritime university meeting the growing needs for education and customized training among graduates of high schools, industry practitioners and all eligible candidates, worldwide. CMU’s mandate to meet industry demands will be achieved by introducing new programmes and expanding existing ones, establishing borderless partnership with local, regional and international institutions as well as securing professional certification, recognition for and accreditation of all programmes. CMU is the product of an intense transformation which included internal reformation, a comprehensive rebranding exercise, a lengthy but effective legislative process, and a comprehensive restructuring in management and internal operations. The CMU Bill was officially passed in the Houses of Parliament on April 12, 2017, after a series of mentions, discussions and appearances. The pursuit towards university status began almost a decade ago but the actual legal process spans nearly four years. The Bill went through the rigors of two Government administrations, receiving bipartisan support, despite delays and now truly represents the nature and scope of the university.

ROSE ROMANS 33 YEARS AND COUNTING...
R
ose Romans is one of the longest serving members of the CMU family. She joined the team as one of the early employees who prepared the then new campus at Palisadoes Park for student enrolment after the Norman Road premises became too small for the expanding operations. She recalls that her landlord at the time (in 1984) encouraged her to apply to the Institute. She, along with three others were employed as office attendants but today, Rose is the only one that remains to see the institution gain university status. She has seen many leaders come and go but holds a special place in her heart for the Norwegian Directors and the current President. “I loved the Norwegians and I love Dr. Pinnock. They are kind and helpful people and never hesitate to assist their workers”. She continues, “I love the students...and I love my job. I don’t think I would be happy working in an office.” She likes being active and that has resulted in her ‘nick name’ ‘busy body Rose’, which she embraces. As she reflects on the humble beginnings of the institution, Rose feels a sense of joy and pride now that JMI is CMU. She is very much looking forward to doing what she has done many times before; do her part to help the institution transition to higher heights.
