We are delighted to announce the launch of our inaugural Research and Innovation Week, an exciting programme of events that will celebrate our existing research and innovation activities and foster a culture of learning, collaboration, and transformative change.
Whether you’re an early career researcher, entrepreneurial educator, experienced professor, or innovation business, this is your chance to embrace and celebrate research and innovation at Cardiff Met. Join us to find out more about the exciting research and innovation our colleagues produce, expand your network and get involved in further cutting edge research, innovation and impact.

The University emphasizes the practical application of research to address real-world challenges, fostering advancements in various fields such as health, technology, and the environment. By engaging with industry partners, government bodies, and communities, Cardiff Met ensures that its research not only advances knowledge but also contributes to societal and economic development, enhancing the quality of life locally and globally.
Research and Innovation Week 2024 not only celebrates our achievements but also sets the stage for future research and innovation and continued progress in making a positive impact on the world.

We have designed an informative and engaging opening session for the Inaugural Research and Innovation Week Launch event on Monday 1 July that will provide insights into the week ahead. Our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rachael Langford will officially open proceedings, and there will be an opportunity to hear from Derek Walker, Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, Abi Phillips, Head of Innovation in Welsh Government and Gavin Powell, Head of Innovation and Clusters at Cardiff Capital Region. There will be a showcase of research and innovation from across the University on display in the Cardiff School of Management Atrium so please take the time to explore and celebrate our latest achievements.
Our events on Tuesday 2 July, will focus on fostering academia-industry collaborations and we would like to extend a warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to our external stakeholders for their participation.

Join us for the launch of the inaugural Research and Innovation Week at Cardiff Met. ViceChancellor Professor Rachael Langford will officially open proceedings and talk about the week ahead. The Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, Derek Walker will be giving us insights into the nation’s sustainable development and future-proofing strategies. We’ll also be hearing from Welsh Government’s Head of Innovation, Abi Phillips and the Head of Innovation and Clusters for Cardiff Capital Region, Gavin Powell who will be discussing their priorities and collaboration opportunities for Cardiff Met. Lastly, Professor Diane Crone, Director of the Centre for Health, Activity and Wellbeing Research (CAWR) at Cardiff Met, will be presenting the Supporting Global Sustainable Development audit report.

Professor Rachael Langford has been President and Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff Metropolitan University since February 2024, after serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor since 2021. With a background in modern languages, she holds degrees from Oxford and Cambridge and has extensively researched nineteenth-century French cultural studies and postcolonial French-speaking cultures. Previously, she held key academic and administrative roles at Oxford Brookes University and Cardiff University and continues to contribute to her field as far as her current leadership roles allow.
Previously CEO of Cwmpas, the UK’s largest cooperative development agency, Derek worked to support people and communities to create jobs and strengthen communities, and changed the organisation’s focus to development that meets the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of future generations.
He has also worked as Head of External Affairs at the Big Lottery Fund (Wales), as Head of Policy and Campaigns at the Wales TUC and was the first employee of Stonewall Cymru.
Abi is passionate about public sector delivery, having held a variety of policy and delivery roles within Welsh Government focused on innovation and the development and implementation of new technologies. She has been involved in a number of cross sector programmes including the Small Business Research Initiative and SMART Flexible Innovation Support.
Abi is currently Head of Innovation within the Economy, Science and Natural Resources Department, responsible for the development and implementation of Wales Innovates, our cross Government Innovation Strategy.
Diane Crone is a distinguished professor at Cardiff Metropolitan University, specialising in public health and physical activity promotion. She leads the Global Academy for Human Health and Human Performance and is the Director of the Centre for Health, Activity and Wellbeing Research. Her research interests include the impact of physical activity on mental health and in population level physical activity promotion adopting a systems approach. Diane’s work is instrumental in shaping health policies and promoting active lifestyles within diverse populations.
GAVIN POWELL, HEAD OF INNOVATION AND CLUSTERS,
CARDIFF CAPITAL REGION
Gavin has two decades’ experience of working within the priority sectors of the Cardiff Capital Region – and a wide-ranging expertise that has seen him deliver at the highest echelons of innovation, as well as being a catalyst for Fintech and a key contributor to AI and Medtech in South East Wales. He secured a Masters in AI and a PhD, spent eight years at Airbus in a number of senior roles across their innovation department, before leaving to help build FinTech Wales. His journey has also included numerous start-up experiences beginning in medtech, including a company that was acquired by Specsavers. In his current role at CCR, Gavin is responsible for the regional innovation strategy, activity across and development of the focal sectors of Fintech, Creative, Medtech, Net Zero, Compound semiconductors and Cyber security, and regional skills development. He also helps enable and ensure the creation of startup and scaling opportunities for local businesses, alongside supporting investments in local companies, regional innovation fund and shared prosperity fund.

You are welcome to come along to meet the Research and Innovation Services (RIS) team. It is a chance to ask questions, discuss ideas and find out about the support services provided by RIS. There will be staff available to cover: Enterprise Education and Start-up Support, Doctoral Supervision, REF 2029 / Impact, Pure Information System, Research Funding, Staff Training and Development, Knowledge Exchange / Innovation / IP, Global Academies, R&I Contracts, and Marketing and Communications including Cooked Illustrations.

During Research and Innovation Week, the combined Global Academies are running an Interdisciplinary Collaboration Clinic in which they will be workshopping project proposals. The aim is to identify and establish the best funding routes and positioning of a project, in addition to offering links to stakeholders that could support the proposal further. This session is aimed at individuals or groups with an established consortium, who have the ‘acorn’ of a project idea but need advice to developing it further.

Academics and companies across all sectors are invited to join us for an inspiring series of topical presentations to facilitate academic and industry connections. Speakers joining us and discussing the different opportunities include Geraint Jones from Innovate UK, Richard Hawkins from SO Modular, Mark Lewis from Welsh Government, Hayley Mills from InBio, Emma Wootten from Age Connects Torfaen, and Prof. John Littlewood, Dr Imtiaz Khan and Dr James Blaxland from Cardiff Met.
A networking session will be built into the morning where industry delegates will be able to meet and chat with keen academics to actively explore potential linkages and ideas for collaboration. We encourage academics engaging with businesses to make the most of the opportunity to develop existing collaborations by sharing the EventBrite invitation with their connections. Cardiff Met staff are able to register on Learning Pool.
CST’s Eureka robots will also be making an appearance in the Atrium from 12pm-1pm.
A Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is a partnership between a company, university and a graduate (Associate) who work together to deliver a strategic project for the business which the company would be unable to do without the knowledge and expertise provided by the university. Geraint Jones from Innovate UK, Prof. John Littlewood from Cardiff Met and Richard Hawkins from SO Modular will be sharing information on the programme and experiences from both academic and industry points of view.

Welsh Government Innovation Funding
SMART Partnerships offer financial support to innovative collaboration projects that require a range of expertise to help businesses grow, improve productivity and increase competitiveness. Cardiff Met has had a number of successful SMART Partnership projects some of which have led onto Knowledge Transfer Partnerships. Mark Lewis from Welsh Government, Dr James Blaxland from Cardiff Met and Hayley Mills from InBio will be talking about the programme and their experiences from an academic and industry perspective.

MemoryConnect
Funded by the prestigious Longitude Prize on Dementia, the MemoryConnect app integrates near real-time cognitive, physiological, and psychological data to offer a comprehensive understanding of the lived experience. This innovative solution allows people with dementia to establish virtual communities and provide mutual support, thereby alleviating some of the burdens on their caregivers. Dr Imtiaz Khan from Cardiff Met and Emma Wootten from Age Connects Torfaen will be speaking about this exciting project.

The R:IDEAS initiative is a new network designed to cultivate and support a flourishing research culture at Cardiff Met. Led by academics, for academics, and supported by RIS, our aim is to develop a vibrant community that will support Cardiff Met Researchers throughout their career.
Officially launching at the Research and Innovation Week, we are seeking involvement and input from all Cardiff Met researchers who would be interested in being part of our network. R:IDEAS is for all academic research staff, regardless of career stage, and we would love to have representatives from every discipline in the University on board.
To find out more, and contribute to the initiative, please attend the R:IDEAS launch session. We will be running an interactive session focused on gathering ideas for future activities, identifying research culture needs, and developing aspirations from across the University on how R:IDEAS can support staff.

His work explores the interaction between people and technology, emphasizing the design of user-friendly systems. Alan is an influential voice in the field of HCI, with numerous publications and international collaborations.

INGRID MURPHY is an award-winning ceramic artist and lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan University, known for her innovative approach to combining traditional ceramics with digital technology. Her work challenges conventional boundaries of art and craft, integrating augmented reality and 3D printing. Ingrid inspires her students to explore new horizons in contemporary ceramic practice.

DR SARAH HOOPER is a Reader in Microbiology and Infection, working within the Centre for Health, Immunology, Microbiology, and Environment. Her research focuses on understanding microbial pathogenesis, antimicrobial resistance, and the development of novel therapeutic strategies. Dr. Hooper is dedicated to advancing public health through her innovative research and teaching in microbiology.

DR ANGESH ANUPAM is the Head of Department for Data Science at Cardiff Metropolitan University, specialising in data-driven modelling of complex systems. His research centres on developing intelligent systems and algorithms which can solve complex real-world problems. Angesh is committed to pushing the boundaries of AI technology and its applications.

PROF. JARRED EVANS is a leading figure at the PDR (International Centre for Design and Research) at Cardiff Metropolitan University. His expertise encompasses design innovation, product development, and user experience, with a strong emphasis on integrating cutting-edge technologies into design practices. Professor Evans is committed to driving forward the boundaries of design research and fostering a culture of innovation and excellence in the field.
DR IZZY MOORE is a researcher at the Centre for Health, Activity, and Wellbeing Research at Cardiff Metropolitan University and co-leads Wales’ Women’s Reproductive Health Patient and Public Involvement group. Her work broadly focuses on female athlete health and injury epidemiology. She has secured over £1.5 million in funding and produced international recommendations for female-specific epidemiology in sport.

His expertise lies in novel discoveries within food science and deploying innovative technologies to ensure food safety and security through advanced scientific research. Her work focuses on human-centred design, design facilitation and the relationship between product design and sustainable behaviour. MARTIN SUTHERLAND is the Commercial and Marketing Director at Cardiff Met’s ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre. Before Cardiff Met, Martin worked in the food industry where he was a Marketing Director in both the supermarket and food manufacturing sectors. In these roles he led teams to deliver marketing innovation which has included launching hundreds of new products, delivering £10m marketing campaigns and implementing new business strategies.

DR GARY WALPOLE is a Reader in business management at Cardiff Metropolitan University and Director of the Circular Economy Innovation Communities programme, which has developed 250 practitioners from 140 organisations across Wales and created a Circular Economy Innovation eco-system. He specializes in developing innovation capabilities and publishes on firm level and regional innovation. He is passionate about developing individual and organizational capabilities to avert the climate crisis.

FACILITATOR: Jamie Edwards
Bespoke training workshop with Jamie Edwards, a professional bid writing consultant with over 20 years’ experience in the sector and a track record of winning over £80 million of contracts in the private, public and third sectors. In this training Jamie will cover some of the core principles of applying for tenders:
• Why us, why now? What’s our win theme / offer for ‘this’ bid?
• How to explain the benefits of working with us on paper?
• Storyboarding for success
• Bringing persuasive techniques into our writing
• Understanding the client
• Content Mapping – structural tool kit for great answers
The annual DRG conference is scheduled to take place on the 2 July 2024, at Techniquest. This is a yearly event that is organised and managed by our Doctoral Researcher Group, who consist of student representatives from all academic schools, and it aims to provide a platform for our doctoral research community to showcase their remarkable research and innovative projects. The conference is an invaluable opportunity for our doctoral community to gain knowledge and forge connections with fellow researchers, and promises to be a valuable experience for all attendees.

Prof. Ron Fisher will be giving this session about Template Analysis (TA), a method used in the thematic analysis of qualitative interview transcripts. It provides a graphic means of recording codes, building these into sub-themes and sub-themes into meta-themes. TA has a theoretic grounding in the research of Crabtree and Miller (1992) and King (2008). A case study based on educational research at Cardiff Met is used to illustrate a practical use of TA.

This session is aimed at those who have never used LaTeX before or who are looking for a refresher, the session will be filled with interactive exercises and we will be covering the basics of LaTeX text editor together, aiding you in getting started and with plenty of examples. The exact material will vary according to the needs/requests of those attending, but as a sample the content will include:
• Setting up a LaTeX Document
• Typesetting Text
• Handling LaTeX Errors
• Typesetting Equations
• Utilizing LaTeX Packages
• Creating well structured documents
• Figures
• Automatic bibliographies

FACILITATOR: Prof. Ron Fisher
In this session Prof. Ron Fisher will be talking about Action Research (Lewin, 1944) a methodology used to investigate and solve issues in social science research. Action Research (AR) has many applications in organisational and management research, but it is particularly useful when applied to practice-based issues. The use of Action Learning Sets and action cycles will be discussed. A case study based on financial literacy will be used to illustrate a practical use of AR.

In this informal and relaxed session you will be introduced to the practice of writing for wellbeing. You will guided to use writing to reflect on issues that are important to you and to explore ideas you are interested in. We will also look at how writing can be used for personal growth and development. This session will not focus on grammar or spelling and there will be no obligation for you to share your writing aloud.

Delivered by our Centre for Entrepreneurship this session will take a practical look at how innovation can be supported amongst our student population.
This session will demonstrate how education and innovation can positively collide for impact on society. We are uniquely able to support meaningful impact through innovative and commercial thinking distilled in undergraduate, masters and doctoral programmes. During this session we will discuss the fundamentals of enterprise and entrepreneurship education, then outline approaches to supporting our spectrum of students.

Open Research focuses on removing barriers to ‘open up’ the academic and scholarly process. It can mean different things to different people and disciplines - with often hidden beneficial impacts on research. Recently it has started to be mentioned as being a key part in the shift to improve research culture and as an important part of national research assessments. This interactive session will cover what Open Research means in the context of these important changes and the reality of this shift - alongside what possibilities exist outside of researcher ‘compliance focused’ activities. We hope attendees will leave the session having explored the what, why, how of ‘open as possible, closed as necessary’.

Enhance your project’s reach and impact with publicity tips from Cardiff Met’s Communications team. Are you grappling with leveraging marketing effectively to promote your academic endeavours? Join us to explore diverse avenues for disseminating information about your project to various audiences.
Ian Cooke-Tapia from Cooked Illustrations will be demonstrating how visual communication outputs can boost citations, conference participation, online engagement, and even generate income through IP commercialisation for researchers.

The third iteration of the Doctoral Researcher Supervisor Symposium will build on the success of the first two events and will bring together Doctoral Researcher Supervisors from all Schools across the University to participate in interactive sessions, share good practice, instigate supervisor communities, and further enhance the research culture within the University. To close the Supervisor Symposium, an awards presentation will be held to recognise excellence in supervision within the University, with the recipients nominated by Doctoral Researchers and fellow Doctoral Researcher Supervisors.
