40 WEEKS, A HUMAN PREGNANCY AND 81 OTHER WAYS TO REPRODUCE
It takes 40 weeks to grow a human baby, and along the way the relationship between the foetus and the pregnant woman bears resemblance to that of a parasite and its host. One takes and takes, while the other one almost dies in the process. Why do we as humans carry our babies inside our bodies for so long, and is there a reason that we are throwing up and feeling nauseous? Are there any better ways to reproduce? Does any living being reproduce in a stranger way than us humans?
Throughout the 40 weeks of a human pregnancy we meet another being who’s finished reproducing each week. The spotted hyena gives birth after only 16 weeks, but she has to give birth through
a penis-shaped clitoris, which cracks open during labour. Do they have it easier? The common Surinam toad doesn’t have a uterus, but instead has evolved to have a swollen piece of skin on their backs where the eggs sink in. This way she can carry the offspring with her, instead of leaving the eggs in the water. Are there any signs that it’s actually quite clever how the human body handles it?
This book gives evolutionary comfort throughout the troubles of pregnancy and an explanation as to how we ended up here, as the smartest species with the most tiresome, but nonetheless not such a stupid way to reproduce.

Excerpt from 40 weeks:
Week 8
The Giant Pacific octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini) lies motionless in her cave. She’s stuck her eggs to the roof, they hang down in big clusters, there are a hundred thousand of them. She measures four metres from the end of one tentacle to the other, she is long as a station wagon, and weighed up to 50 kilos when she crept into the cave eight weeks ago. Since then, she has not eaten, not gone outside, not done anything except watch over the eggs. The only movement she makes is to blow water over the eggs with her big siphon, the tube she usually rapidly squeezes water through to shoot her body through the ocean. She makes sure the eggs get enough oxygen, that parasites and algae don’t stick to them. With her sensitive suction cups she strokes the eggs, feeling them carefully, taking care that also those in the centre of the cluster get fresh water. Slowly she starves as she sacrifices everything for the eggs, for the babies, she will lay there until they hatch in about 4-5 months, the amount of time it will take depends on how warm the water is. Does she get hungry, does her digestive system protest when she doesn’t give her body nutrition?
I’m lying in my own cave, my dark bedroom. I am an octopus whose only purpose is to take care of my offspring, the embryo inside me. I vomit to make sure no parasites get near my egg, I stroke my hands carefully over my belly, I will lay here for a long time still. I should feel happy there’s a new human growing in my belly, thankful that it’s going well so far, but I can’t. To feel nauseated is not like feeling a little pain in the foot, something I can distance myself from, dull with painkillers and still function. The nausea ruins everything I try to do, and no matter what I do it won’t disappear. I cannot think when I feel nauseated, I cannot take care of my three-year-old while I’m vomiting, I cannot have conversations with my partner while I wait for my stomach to turn inside out again. I can only lie completely still and hope it passes.
Dag O. Hessen WOLVERINE TRACKS
One day in February 1972 Dag O. Hessen is on a ski trip with his father in the mountains when they come across wolverine tracks in the snow. The young Dag convinces his father to follow the trail, but after half an hour of searching the imprints of the predator disappear down a steep passage and they have to give up on their hunt.
50 years later he’s back at the same place to pick up on the trail of the animal that escaped him. His father is now long gone, but the mountains are still there and somewhere out there is a wolverine.
Wolverine Tracks is Hessen’s most personal book so far. It's a portrait of one of nature´s most fascinating and shy animals, so compact in its wildness and power that there is hardly anything like it. An animal with a jaw strong enough to bite through even the thickest thigh bones and enough power to take down an animal many times its own weight, bite its head off and then drag its body up a tree. Seeing the animal in its natural habitat is a rarity only very few people get to experience.
Jervesporet 130 x 205 mm
The wolverine, and the desire to meet the wild animal, is the framing of the story taking place in the mountainous nature. But this is also a story about time passing and changes we cannot prevent. About everything that slips through our fingers. The things we cannot completely catch and tame: A childhood long gone, close family members who have passed, the wild nature and a natural diversity which is about to weather away. And at the bottom of all of this lies a deep affection and respect for nature and biology, presented by one of Norway’s most respected non-fiction authors.
Dag O. Hessen (b. 1956) is a Professor of Biology at the University of Oslo. He is a distinct voice in the debate on topics like evolution, climate, ecology and biology as a way of understanding humanity. He has written many scientific works on themes like ecology and evolution, and has also published a number of popular science books about evolution, biology and the environment. He has received several awards for his promotion of popular science.

Excerpt from Wolverine Tracks:
The sky above us is white, below us the snow is white, and these two variations on white meet at the horizon. Brilliant white. The sun is starting to make its comeback after the winter, and is detectable through the white cloud cover. There are clusters of scrawny mountain birches, further down birch forest, then below us a fir-clad valley and in the distance beyond a view of the mountain peaks in the north-west. Father and I are in the mountains. It is the winter holidays and we’ve walked from the cabin, through the forest and off any ski paths, as we have so often. We cross a set of fox tracks, in a dip with willow thicket the grouse have embroidered their prints in the snow, interrupted by hare tracks. Here the grouse have had their roosts, partly buried, partly covered by the night’s light snowfall, before they shook off the snow at sunrise, breakfasted on winter buds, leaving behind nothing but wing prints as a farewell gesture in the fresh snow. The winter mountains stand silent and still, there is little to see, but these tracks tell a mute story of who’s been here, and on rare occasions a dramatic hunting story, with trails of blood in the snow. But mostly it’s just white.
Then we cross some tracks unlike any usually found here. The prints are of massive paws, and they run in a straight line from the horizon in the north and disappear over the gentle mountain ridge to the east. “Bear,” I say. “Wolverine,” says my father, who is widely knowledgeable and also a vet. The largest Mustelid in Norway, he says, a relative of the snow weasel and stoat, but with the appearance of a small bear. A creature few ever get to see, and such compact ferocity and strength that there’s barely anything equals it. It doesn’t recoil from the steepest gorge, or a lynx or wolf or bear, and it can take down a reindeer many times its own weight, before biting off its head and hanging it up high in a tree - like a trophy. It has jaws that can chew frozen flesh or crush even the strongest thighbone, and it’s a perpetual motion machine that can go on and on. In short, the wolverine is way off the scale, says my father, a pragmatic man with no taste for dramatic exaggeration.
DEN NYE FISKEN
Kjetil Østli and Simen Sætre THE NEW FISH
A global history of salmon farming
In the early 1970s, a group of scientists wanted to make more food for the world. They looked to the sea. They sampled genes from 41 Norwegian and Swedish rivers, and designed a salmon that was fatter, more docile, and faster growing. This was the beginning of a new industry, salmon farming.
The industry spread from coastal Norway to all corners of the Globe. Jobs were created, business boomed, salmon farmers became filthy rich.
A new type of food, the salmon sushi, spread across the world. But as soon as the new fish was let loose in nature, unexpected things started to happen. Wild salmon stocks disappeared, diseases spread in the salmon farms, salmon louse swarmed, and the new industry became highly contested.
In a prize-winning, five-year investigation, the authors Simen Sætre and Kjetil Østli take a closer look at the global salmon industry. For the first time, the whole story of salmon farming has been told. The result combines nature writing from Norwegian fjords with classical muckraking and character-driven literary non-fiction. The authors start out with a question: What happens when you place a new animal in the fjords? This book gives you the answer
Lies and torture – This book about salmon farming is exceptional investigative journalism.

Excerpt from the Prologue, The New Fish
We thrash about and are a danger to ourselves and to the rest of the life that surrounds us, wrote biologist Edward O. Wilson, who says that today’s world resembles a Star Wars-like civilization with Stone Age emotions, medieval institutions and godlike technology. “Apart from the fact that we mostly behave like monkeys and have a limited life expectancy, we are godlike,” Wilson writes.
With this kind of mentality, our intelligence and creative urges can also be our enemy. This is thematized in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. In these works, man uses his brain to create something new and innovative – but the results are terrifying.
Goethe describes the tragedy of development, where great ambitions for society upset nature’s balance. For Shelley, the new creature ultimately becomes a monster.
On the other side of this cautious attitude is the engineer-like optimist; our intelligence has taken us this far – so it can therefore also be our salvation.
Problems are solved with new research and innovation. If the air gets too hot, we’ll invent technology to slow down the heating. If the atmosphere is filled with CO2, we’ll capture and purify more CO2. If there are fewer wild animals to eat, we must produce more domestic animals or change our eating habits. And with fewer fish in the ocean, we have to create new fish to eat.
Yes, the fish – shouldn’t we also domesticate the fish?

Torolf E. Kroglund THE HISTORY OF THE BOAT
From forest to ocean with the vessel that changed the world
While the Covid-19 pandemic led to closed borders and a break lasting well over two years, Torolf E. Kroglund built his own pram – without any experience. It was going to be a rowing boat – a pram. It gets built following a traditional clinkbuild method, just like the Vikings did and which is now declared a world heritage by UNESCO. At the same time both the author’s and the planet’s health worsens dramatically. Building a boat becomes a way to build a way out.
This book looks at the history of the boat, from African migrants who at the dawn of time left the continent by boat, to the present boat migrants, and the complicated culture of the coast. With a personal approach the book digs into the core of what the boat has
meant, both internationally and for Norway as a nation. The boat as a specific vessel between land and continent, moving towards freedom and free time – but also in the less literal meaning; the method of communication which carries humanhood. We’re all in the same boat.

A History of Science
For more than ten years historian Jon Røyne Kyllingstad has studied how the concept of race has been used in the history of science, from the 1600s until today. The idea that some races have been elevated above others has been rooted in all parts of academia, and affected research within anthropology, history, and medicine.
Some of our foremost researchers have allowed themselves to use a scientific “reasoning” for systematic discrimination, and in this interesting as well as frightening work parts of our academic history which so far has been forgotten or ignored is put to the light in a systemic manner.

Hilde Østby MAP OF LONELINESS
About humanities unstoppable desire for community, and what drives us apart
In March 2020 the world closed down and stayed completely or partly closed for two and a half years. Most arenas where humans go for companionship, such as offices and concerts, weddings and funerals, disappeared or were decimated overnight. It’s as if the whole world has taken part in a huge experiment in loneliness, according to author Hilde Østby. The result of this experiment is worth dwelling on, as it’s not an easy diagnosis to just brush off. Research shows that loneliness, if it is chronic, is more dangerous for our health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
In Map of Loneliness Hilde Østby approaches the subject on a personal, philosophical and journalistic level in order to get to grips with loneliness
– one of our most enigmatic and under-
communicated public health challenges. She shows us what loneliness does to us and asks where it comes from. That is a question which can be answered both medically and existentially. Maybe the mechanisms which drive us apart could later bring us back together? In that case loneliness is something we must solve as a community, through community, and for the community.
Hilde Østby (b. 1975) is a historian of ideas, author, journalist and former publishing editor. She made her debut as an author in 2013 with the critically acclaimed novel Encyclopedia of Longing.

Synne Sun Løes NO ONE CAN SPIT AT A SMILING FACE
As long as difference exists, it will always speak with a contradictory tone. Speak over itself. Interrupt, protest and bang its fist on the table. Try to convince the world that it deserves to be heard. At the same time it’s also scared to death and trying to hide under that same table. Tries to muzzle itself. All because it’s scared to be exposed.
In these personal and investigative essays Synne Sun Løes writes about adoption and identity. She bases her writing on her own experiences as adopted, as well as non-fiction, academia and the public debates. The themes being illuminated are widely spread, from xenophobia, racisms, being different, “the trend of diversity”, hysteria around infringement and Korean revenge art, to more psychological topics such as transgenerational traumas, psychoanalysis, and connectional damage.
How can one take ownership of one’s own experiences as adopted and as a “different child” without being accused of taking on the role of a victim? How can one adopt one’s own personal identity, as oneself, when one is “different” in present day Norway? How is identity affected by meeting one’s own biological parents? How can one survive in a world which time and time again tries to spit in one’s face?
The author approaches these questions both with wonder, humour and seriousness, and she also casts a critical view at the tendency of society to simplify, edit and polarize the stories from marginalized groups.
Synne Sun Løes (b. 1975) is based in Oslo. She debuted in 1999 with the book Yoko is alone. For her YA-novel, Eating Flowers for Breakfast (2002), she won the prestigious Brage Prize. She has been awarded Riksmålsprisen and been chosen as a White Raven author.

Hans D. Høeg NO ONE IS INNOCENT: ANTI-SEMITISM ON THE LEFT
My time as Chief of Staff for an American congressman
Does the Norwegian left have a problem with anti-Semitism? Yes, argues Torkel Brekke in this book.
The author shows how parts of the left have cultivated conspiracy theories about Jews and how Soviet Holocaust revisionism was spread in the Norwegian public. He examines how violence against civilian Israelis is justified and how parts of the Norwegian trade union movement and organizational life moved from postwar sympathy for Israel and the Jews to a rhetoric with an anti-Semitic character.
No One Is Innocent takes an uncomfortable but necessary reckoning with a political tradition that has been ignored for far too long.
For the left, it has been easy to stick the Jew-hatred on the others, i.e. Nazis and the far-right.
The left has failed to look in the mirror and ask how they themselves have referred to and treated Jews.
Torkel Brekke (b. 1970) is a professor at OsloMet. He has his doctorate in Oriental studies from the University of Oxford, and works primarily with religion, politics, prejudice and conflict studies. He is associated with the Center for Extremism Research (C-REX) at UiO and the think tank Civita. He has been a visiting professor at several universities outside Norway.

Hans D. Høeg A NORWEGIAN IN THE HOUSE
My time as Chief of Staff for an American congressman
Our Man in Washington is the story of the Norwegian who became Chief of Staff for an American Congressman in 2012 and ended up leading a plot to topple the USA’s third most powerful man.
When Hans Høeg met a hillbilly by the name of Thomas Massie at the prestigious MiT in Cambridge in 1991, he realised it would be the start of a long and rewarding friendship. What’s more, he decided then and there that he would get on board if his energetic, weather-beaten friend ever decided to embark on an exciting project sometime in the future.
But when Thomas’s offer came, more than 20 years later, it was not the entrepreneurial dream Hans had imagined. His outspoken, freedomloving fellow student from Vanceburg, Kentucky, had thrown himself into
politics and had, against all the odds, been elected to represent his district in Congress on behalf of the Republicans. Massie wanted to create one hell of a commotion in Washington and needed a wingman he could count on. His choice fell on a somewhat reluctant Hans from Drammen.
Now Høeg tells the incredible story of his years at the heart of the innermost circles of power in the USA. It’s the tale of two engineer nerds’ efforts to understand the political game, their spectacular attempt to overthrow the Republican speaker, John Boehner, and a rude encounter with a self-sustaining system of corruption and bureaucratic chicanery – an ugly culture that was a logical precursor to the tumult of the 2016 presidential election.
Hans D. Høeg (b. 1971) is a Norwegian entreprenuer and investor living in the US. Between 2012-2017 he worked as the Chief of Staff for republican congressmann Thomas Massie.

He glanced at me sideways. “Like say if you had a band of rebels, a few defectors who met in secret last night and made pledges … ” My developing political brain was still in its infancy, but it managed to figure out that he was talking about the vote for the Speaker of the U. S. House of Representatives, the person third in line for the presidency, a uniquely powerful position currently occupied by Ohio Republican John Boehner.
Was my friend serious? After he’d been in the House for only a few months, and my first official day as his Chief of Staff, he was part of a rebel alliance with the outrageous idea of overthrowing the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and all the entrenched interests connected to him?
It was January 3, 2013, and the vote for Speaker was only hours away. Other than swearing in new congressmen and women, the vote for speaker is the main order of business on the first day of a new Congressional session. Over the next several shocking years, we were to learn that the speaker has massive powers to control and affect the legislation in Congress, much more than people are aware of. The Speaker is also third in line for the U.S. presidency – if the President and Vice President both are unable to serve, the Speaker becomes the head of state.
But weren’t votes for Speaker predictable, traditional rituals of straight party-line voting? Was my friend saying today somehow was going to be different?

Excerpt from Instruction Manual for Couples:
Over the last few years there have been many studies which confirm that troubled relationships affect people’s health. Trouble in romantic relationships is more or less as dangerous for the health as smoking! Some would say that’s an exaggerated claim, some would say it’s scaremongering, but it is actually true. Researchers from Harvard University have followed more than 700 people from the beginning of their 20s and throughout their adult lives.
The numbers are clear: What matters the most for how long we live is not genes, obesity, smoking or physical activity, but the quality of our closest relations. As an adult the relationship between a couple is often the most important one.
This made me think. How do I approach this knowledge as a GP for my patients? How do other colleagues do it? How well-known is this connection between relationship quality and health?
These questions have led to a PhD-project where I research how trouble in relationships is handled in GP consultations. As a GP we meet 70 percent of the population each year. Through a secure relation and a wholesome approach to the health problems the patients arrive with, we have a unique opportunity to pick up on the relationship problems and show them the way forward, so that they can get help before the patterns of behaviour become too rigid.
Kristin Leer ADHD
Seven Roads to Fresh Understanding
ADHD is often defined as a psychiatric disorder, but physician and author Kristin Leer, who has ADHD herself, as well as children with ADHD, cannot see ADHD as the diagnosis of a disease. For the author, it was a relief to find out that she had ADHD. Had she realised earlier that the cause of so many challenges and sorrows – at school, in her professional career, in personal relationships – could be summed up in four simple initials, she would have been spared much frustration and anxiety. ADHD is something you can live with. What’s more, it can sometimes have some surprisingly positive sides. However, ADHD may also make life feel like an uphill struggle, and the range of functional impairments can be extensive.
The book offers a new perspective on how to understand ADHD, reviews diagnostic criteria and treatments, and offers excellent everyday coping strategies. A better life is possible when ADHD is diagnosed than when it isn’t.

Many of their patients regain their energy, memory and concentration by avoiding foods they don’t tolerate. A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON CHOLESTEROL
More than 600,000 Norwegians use cholesterol-lowering drugs to prevent cardiovascular diseases. Does everyone benefit from using them? Could many people avoid the side effects by using food as medicine? And is there really a link between high cholesterol, constricted blood vessels and heart failure?
These questions and many more are answered in A New Perspective on Cholesterol, where doctors Erik and Sofie Hexeberg take a deep dive into the role of cholesterol for a healthy heart and give us a new understanding of the causes of cardiovascular disease — the second most common cause of death in Norway.
Erik Hexeberg and Sofie Hexeberg
A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES
Generally, patients are presented with the perception of the autoimmune diseases as being 'auto' in the sense that the body starts to attack itself without any cause and that the disease is also 'auto' in the way that the disease continues and will not be controlled unless the patient is treated with anti-inflammatory drugs.
In this book the authors demonstrate the link between autoimmune diseases and food proteins by blood tests showing increased concentration of antibodies to specific food proteins and in parallel identifies parts of food proteins in urine samples. The authors propose a model where any food protein could elicit an immune response in a susceptible individual and thereby trigger an autoimmune disease.
The dietary advice this book offers is based on this approach, and the book contains stories from people with different autoimmune diseases.

A KNITTER’S YEAR
Ida Wirak Trettevik has been designing knitting patterns under the name of Witre Design since 2018. Her patterns are primarily for women, with some items for children and men. A Knitter’s Year contains a total of 30 patterns, many of them new and exclusively designed for this book.
Knitted clothing has become important for many people in a time of increasing focus on slow fashion and sustainability. Because we take extra good care of clothes we make for ourselves, choosing materials and colours we are fond of and will want to wear for a long time. And because a person who knits knows how much work goes into every single piece of clothing. A Knitter’s Year is a result of this: the desire to knit your own wardrobe, with clothing for every season.

Lag dinegen blandingjord-
Her ser vi at folk bruker forskjellige blandinger ut ifra deres egne erfaringer.
● Fredslilje (Spathiphyllum)
● Treklatrer (Philodendron)
● Grønnrenner (Chlorophytum comosum)
● Svigermors tunge (Sansevieria)
● Pengetre (Crassula ovata)
● Porselensblomst (Hoya)
