HAPPY VETERANS DAY

Veterans of our military sacrifice their innocence, time with their friends and family, their bodies and sometimes their lives to protect this country. Regardless of your thoughts on war, we’re all indebted to our troops. Veterans Day is unique among nations in that we honor those who are with us, reserving Memorial Day for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. So while we honor fallen heroes and honor the memory of our great leaders on other days of remembrance, we have an opportunity on this day to pay homage to those who are still with us. This opportunity is a blessing, and we should exercise it with pride, purpose and enthusiasm. So to those members of Capital Medical Society who have served, we thank you! Member Name

REFLECTIONS FROM THE EDITOR

IN MEMORIAM: MYRA HURT, PHD, 1947-2023 WHO WAS MYRA HURT? By Frank Skilling, M.D. “What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.” …Pericles In the history of medical practice in North Florida, few people in the last twenty-five years have had as much influence in developing the medical community here as Myra Hurt, who died recently. When I came to Tallahassee as a young ophthalmologist in 1978, most of the practicing physicians had not attended medical school in Florida. Even though I was a resident of Miami, I’d attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and done my residency in Texas before moving to Tallahassee. At that time, the graduates of Emory University, Duke University, and the Medical College of Georgia predominated as practicing physicians. The relatively new University of Florida medical school had started sending its graduates north, and the University of Miami had a very small presence. Many Tallahassee practices found it difficult to recruit new physicians to our area because so many of the potential applicants had visions of Florida that evoked unlimited beaches and a sunburned lifestyle. For them, Tallahassee was the land of heritage oak plantations and dark water lakes, but few shopping malls.

credentials in microbiology and research, Myra found a position at Florida State University in the Chemistry Department. She soon became the director of The Program in Medical Sciences (PIMS), which provided the first year of medical education for thirty students who then transferred to the University of Florida (UF) to complete their medical training. PIMS had been active since 1972, but it was a “stepchild” of UF. Myra drafted a formal proposal for starting a medical school in Tallahassee in 1993, and she gained support from instrumental political leaders including Sandy D'A lemberte, Durell Peaden, and John Thrasher. The fact that no new medical school had been founded in the USA for the previous twenty years was not a deterrence to her. The odds against establishing one were great, but she persisted.

I came from a family with a long history in medicine. I graduated from UAB, which based its training methods on the Flexner model initially started at Johns Hopkins University in the early 20th century. According to this model, the hallmarks of modern medical schools were education, research, and patient care. I didn’t think that Tallahassee could provide the patient base for the three, and I went on the record as opposing the foundation of a new medical school in Tallahassee. Myra Hurt, PhD I was quoted in the Tallahassee Myra Hurt, PhD moved to Democrat, and within a day, I Tallahassee in 1985 with her husband Julian received a phone call from Myra, with whom I Hurt, M.D., a cardiovascular surgeon. With her had served on the PIMS admissions committee. 12

REFLECTIONS FROM THE EDITOR

She invited me to lunch at the University Center Club with her and the FSU provost, Larry Abele. I told them that my main concern was that there were not enough patients in Tallahassee to train all proposed FSU medical students simultaneously. Myra and Dr. Abele carefully explained to me the concept of regional campuses that would use local physicians to provide first-hand clinical encounters with medical students. The original regional campuses were in Tallahassee, Pensacola, and Orlando. Rather than be assigned to a “hospital team” as a medical student, each student would be closely supervised by an experienced physician in their particular field. With the use of the internet to facilitate communication and share learning materials, clinical experiences could be standardized, and students evaluated continuously. Myra converted me to a supporter, but I remained a bit skeptical of the practicality of monitoring training programs scattered throughout Florida. Because she helped write the charter for the new medical school, she made sure that the goal of providing compassionate patient care was foremost. She became the first acting dean of the new medical school until a permanent dean could be selected. She also inaugurated the Science Students Together Reaching Instructional Diversity & Excellence (SSTRIDE) program, which helps underprivileged students enter the healthcare fields. For her many contributions to FSU, the university awarded her with the Westcott Medal, one of its highest honors.

Because of health problems, Myra officially retired from the College of Medicine in 2019. However, she continued to keep in contact with some of her “babies,” as she called them, especially the young women who were the pioneers as students in the early years when national certification was initially in doubt. For me, one of the major changes that Myra Hurt was able to accomplish during her tenure at FSU was to turn Tallahassee into a community where the graduates of the College of Medicine stayed on to become physicians for our expanding population. There are currently seventy-four active practicing physicians in North Florida who are graduates of the FSU College of Medicine. While many of them may not realize it, Myra Hurt was the driving force behind establishing the medical school here. Her legacy lives on in the quality of care that “is woven into” our dedicated medical community.

Invariably, the graduates of FSU College of Medicine received high praise from their respective residency directors, and the goal of producing primary care physicians was overwhelmingly accomplished. I personally supervised several who were going into family medicine or emergency medicine, and all were attentive and eager to learn. I told Myra that I never had to worry how any of the students would interact with private patients because they had been well prepared by their introductions to clinical outpatient medicine.

VIEWPOINT

Editor’s Note: This tribute below was written and shared by Dr. Duncan Postma at the Memorial Service for Ray Bellamy, M.D. on September 5, 2023 at Capital City Country Club. Dr. Bellamy was a retired orthopedic surgeon, where he worked alongside his son, Dr. David Bellamy, for many years. He served as president of the Capital Medical Society in 1992, and he was a recipient of their Outstanding Physician Award in 2009.

A TRIBUTE TO RAY BELLAMY, M.D., 1940-2023 By Duncan Postma, M.D. When it comes to Ray Bellamy, there really is so much to mention and admire. I was fortunate enough to have been a close friend and would like share some remarks. The interesting thing about Ray’s name is that Raymond translates into protector, of German origin and Bellamy translates into beautiful friend, of French origin. Just glancing at his CV gives you an idea of the breadth and depth of his contributions to the hospital, his associates and the FSU School of Medicine. He was head of the surgical clerkship in Tallahassee and mentored numerous medical students and interested potential medical students. He read extensively and intensively - I’m aware of this to a degree because of how early he arose in the morning, often sending me emails on various subjects. His reading included the usual medical journals, The New York Times and the Miami Herald, and many sources in between.

Chiropractic treatments are based on manipulations - not methods of evaluation of efficacy. I truly think only one person could have led FSU back to where it should have been. All of Ray’s attributes were required: do what’s right (Ray received no income); he was a local, FSU, and state leader; the FSU and Medical School faculty knew and trusted him (including two Noble Laureates); and he was well read (and therefore able to discuss the issues). Sure enough, within two weeks, Ray had traveled around the country on his own dime, meeting trustees, off and on campus leaders, and impressing all concerned. What looked like a done deal was stopped in its tracks!

I want to mention the Tallahassee Tennis Club. With a few exceptions, this has been going on for three decades. No dues required but an essential criterion was you had to like tennis more than football. There was a mid-week trio of Ray, Emily Waugh, and me running drills. Saturday was drills and/or singles and included Ray, Pete Eckert, Terry Lewis, David Huang, and Mark Casteel. Doubles day Ray the person. CMS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY FOUNDATION AWARDS $62,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO FSU MEDICAL STUDENTS According to the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine (JABFM), the current patient panel size for a primary care physician is 1,200 to 1,900 patients per physician. Data published by the Association of American Medical Colleges in January 2020, predicts that the United States could see an estimated shortage of between 54,100 and 139,000 physicians, including shortfalls in both primary and specialty care, by 2033. The Capital Medical Society (CMS) Foundation hopes to encourage medical students at Florida State University (FSU) College of Medicine as these future physicians prepare to help meet the shortages. In fulfillment of its mission, “to support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable, and dignified,” the Capital Medical Society Foundation awarded scholarships to ten students in their first or second year of medical school at the FSU College of Medicine and third and fourth year medical students at the Tallahassee Regional Campus of FSU College of Medicine. Dr. Frank Walker, Chair of CMS Foundation Scholarship Committee, presented the scholarships to each of the recipients, except Brooke Hartenstein, at a special presentation held at the Tallahassee Regional Campus on October 3. CMS Foundation will present Hartenstein her awards in late October when she returns from an academic rotation. A committee comprised of Capital Medical Society members selected the scholarship recipients through an application process. When selecting awardees, the Scholarship Committee focuses on financial need, as reflected in their application and interview. The CMS Foundation gives preference to North Florida residents and students who plan to practice in North Florida after completion

“Attending medical school is a very expensive proposition these days. My fellow physicians are pleased and proud to help support medical students, who have not only a financial need, but a desire to stay in Florida and practice medicine in Florida,” said Dr. Walker. Dr. Alma Littles, Interim Dean of the FSU College of Medicine was delighted to participate in the presentation. She was pleased to be able to celebrate the students’ achievement and to thank the Capital Medical Society Foundation for their years’ of scholarship support for their medical students. According to EducationData. org, the average medical school debt is $215,000 excluding premedical and other educational debt. The average medical school graduate owes $241,600 in total student loan debt. The high cost of medical school loans weighs heavily on doctors for many years following graduation. One-third of respondents (34%) expected to take at least 10 years to pay off their student loans. The scholarship fund has been one of the most successful and well-respected programs first established by Capital Medical Society over 36 years ago. Archived records since 1997 document that the Capital Medical Society Foundation has provided over $794,489 to

students in the Program in Medical Science Program, the precursor to FSU College of Medicine, University of Florida medical students, and FSU College of Medicine students. $777,000 in scholarships have been awarded to FSU College of Medicine students beginning with those in its inaugural Class of 2005. Many of those past recipients are now practicing in Tallahassee, and some serve on the Scholarship Committee. An additional $61,000 in scholarships was awarded from the CMS Foundation Scholarship Fund this year. The CMS Foundation Scholarship Committee also awarded an additional $1,000 in scholarships to Brooke Hartenstein from the Anesthesiology Associates of Tallahassee Scholarship Fund. On December 8, the Capital Medical Society Foundation will host their annual fundraising event, the 2023 Capital Medical Society Foundation Holiday Auction, to raise funds for medical school scholarships and other programs in fulfillment of its mission. Corporate sponsorships are encouraged.

CMS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Dear Scholarship Donors, I want to give you my deepest appreciation for your generosity in contributing to my medical education. Your gift through the Capital Medical Society Foundation will be instrumental in supporting me during medical school. Not only will this scholarship allow me more time to focus on constructive extracurricular endeavors, but it has also contributed to a boost in my well-being with decreased stress regarding finances. I am truly honored to be associated with the Capital Medical Society, an organization that has been at the forefront of promoting excellence in healthcare, education, and community service. Your commitment to advancing medical education and healthcare in our community inspires me, and I am excited about the opportunity to contribute positively to our field in the future. As a medical student, I am dedicated to pursuing my education with diligence and passion. Rest assured that I will utilize this scholarship to its fullest extent to excel in my studies and further my involvement in initiatives that align with the values and mission of your esteemed organization. As of last week, I have been selected to serve as the Interprofessional Liaison for the Chapman Community Health Program which provides health screenings, promotes preventative health education initiatives, and fosters community development at Maryland Oaks Crossing, a low-income housing community in Tallahassee. Additionally, I have been volunteering at the Kearney Center with FSU HOME (Homeless Outreach Medicine and Education) Street Medicine to provide medical services to our unsheltered neighbors. I have also applied to run for an Executive Board position in this organization as well. Overall, I am inspired by your generosity, and I hope to extend the same help I received to others. Additionally, I would like to extend my appreciation to the scholarship selection committee for their time and effort in reviewing applications and speaking with me during the interview. Once again, thank you for this incredible opportunity and for believing in my potential. I am truly honored to be associated with the Capital Medical Society. I look forward to staying connected with the Capital Medical Society and hope to contribute to its mission. Ultimately, words cannot express how grateful I am to be receiving this scholarship. Thank you for your selflessness in extending your help to myself and others. Sincerely, Owen Moore
