DR. JIMMY MOSS’ AUTOBIOGRAPHY SALES SUPPORT THE FSUCOM-TALLAHASSEE REGIONAL CAMPUS FOOD PANTRY On medical student Jimmy Moss’ first day at the FSU College of Medicine in 2006, Dr. Alma Littles, then the Associate Dean of Medical Affairs and now Interim Dean of the college, said the words that would level his playing field in medical school. “This is not just a career choice you have chosen…this is a calling. Your childhood may have been bad or difficult, but it’s over. Now starts the next chapter of your book.” A Doctored Life is an episodic journey through Dr. Jimmy Moss’ life, filled with winding roads that stopped at homeless shelters and others that eventually landed him at the doors of some of the work’s elite medical training institutions. Dr. Moss gives us a firsthand glimpse into the life he doctored together from homeless…to Harvard.

Dr. Moss’ own struggle through homelessness and food insecurity has prompted him to offer his autobiography through the Capital Medical Society Foundation to benefit the FSU College of Medicine’s Food Pantry at its Tallahassee Regional Campus where he once was a medical student. After learning that current students are struggling with food insecurity, he jumped at the opportunity to pay it forward for the next generation of physicians at his alma mater.

PREPARING FOR 2024 The Board of Governors reviewed the Strategic Goals of the medical society over the past year and developed goals for 2024. One of our major goals is to continue to help better connect the medical community. If you are interested in serving on one of the following committees or in other service opportunities, please contact Tom Block at tblock@capmed.org.

CME Committee - to supervise the selection and review of all CMEs offered, as well as selection of other educational programs that would benefit the membership.

Legislative Resource Committee - educate and inform CMS physicians, policy makers and the public on issues including the public’s health, patient care, and the practice of medicine.

ENGAGE

SERVE

Membership Committee - to investigate applicants for membership as indicated by Chapter 1 of the CMS Bylaws and make appropriate recommendations to the Society.

We Care Network - participate as a donating specialty medical provider in the We Care Network.

Social Events Committee - to plan events that will help bind the medical community and their families to strengthen relationships and communication for the ultimate benefit of the patient.

ISAAC MOORE, M.D., 1941-2023

Business Meeting A. Welcome – Dr. Sarah Ko, President, called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. She welcomed everyone and thanked Westminster Oaks for allowing us to use their incredible facility for our meetings.

Dear Scholarship Donors, I want to give you my deepest appreciation for your generosity in contributing to my medical education. Your gift through the Capital Medical Society Foundation will be instrumental in supporting me during medical school. Not only will this scholarship allow me more time to focus on constructive extracurricular endeavors, but it has also contributed to a boost in my well-being with decreased stress regarding finances.

As of last week, I have been selected to serve as the Interprofessional Liaison for the Chapman Community Health Program which provides health screenings, promotes preventative health education initiatives, and fosters community development at Maryland Oaks Crossing, a low-income housing community in Tallahassee. Additionally, I have been volunteering at the Kearney Center with FSU HOME (Homeless Outreach Medicine and Education) Street Medicine to provide medical services to our unsheltered neighbors. I have also applied to run for an Executive Board position in this organization as well. Overall, I am inspired by your generosity, and I hope to extend the same help I received to others.

Additionally, I would like to extend my appreciation to the scholarship selection committee for their time and effort in reviewing applications and speaking with me during the interview. Once again, thank you for this incredible opportunity and for believing in my potential. I am truly honored to be associated with the Capital Medical Society. THE IMPACT OF YOUR DONATIONS The Capital Medical Society Foundation’s community of donors strategically help fulfill its mission “to support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.” ➢ Access to healthcare is increased through gifts to the We Care Network and the We Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $130 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2022-23, which ended June 30, 2023, more than $5 million in healthcare was donated.

Gifts support patient assistance such as medication, transportation, and durable medical equipment, as well as operational expenses of the program including salaries of the case management team who coordinate the donated care. ➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at the FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the CMS Foundation Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $61,000 was awarded

in 2023. An additional $1,000 was awarded from The Anesthesiology Associates of Tallahassee Scholarship Fund. The Julia Revell St. Petery, M.D. Scholarship in Pediatrics and The J. Orson Smith, M.D. Scholarship in Internal Medicine were also awarded in 2023. ➢ Gifts to the Capital Medical Society Foundation help provide operational resources for the Capital Medical Society Foundation. In addition, modest grants are awarded to area non-profits whose programs improve access to healthcare for the underserved. In 2023, the CMSF awarded a total of $14,000 in grants to the Big Bend Hospice Foundation for bereavement services, Elder Care Services for in-home services to seniors, Lighthouse of the Big Bend to provide services to the visually impaired, and to Lutheran Social Services of North Florida, Inc. for the KidSafe program.
