FEBRUARY EDITION, VOLUME 2024, NO. 2

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR 2024 CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY PRESIDENT By Helen Paulson, M.D., CMS President Dear Colleagues, Happy New Year and welcome to another year with the Capital Medical Society! I am honored to serve as your 2024 President. 2023 was the year the COVID pandemic “officially” ended, though some of the changes we adopted stay with us, and some of the challenges persist as well. Through it all, Capital Medical Society has been a trusted source of information and support. As we begin 2024, we bid a fond farewell and happy retirement to executive director Pam Irwin. We wish her the very best and are so grateful for her leadership. She welcomed me on to the board and has taught me so much about the importance of the Society, Foundation, Services, and of course the Alliance, to our community. We will miss her! We welcome our new executive director Tom Block. His name is familiar to many of us from his career in broadcasting. I’m looking forward to getting to know him better as we work together to grow and better our organization. I am also grateful for all the help and support from Shannon Boyle and Rosalie Carlin, as well as our outgoing President Dr. Sarah Ko, President-Elect Dr. Russell Cole, and all of our board members. In 2024, CMS will continue our many programmatic offerings- the Physician

Wellness Program, high-quality CME, practice management education, and CE Broker support. I have especially enjoyed our CME offerings, learning from my peers about many interesting topics, including long COVID and cardiac electrophysiology. There is so much value in hearing from local physicians about new and emerging issues and we have another great slate lined up for this year. Our special events bring our community together - the Celebration Awards Dinner is an opportunity to honor our accomplished colleagues, and the CMSF Holiday Auction is a lot of fun while supporting the We Care Network and medical education. The Capital Medical Society, along with so many other organizations, is at an inflection point in our history. Our active members see the value in membership through our ongoing programs and events. Even more, when the pandemic struck and everything changed overnight, the Society stepped up through information dissemination and PPE procurement coordination. Beyond these, though, is the invaluable and intangible support of connection with our colleagues and peers- and this has meant the most to me since returning to Tallahassee as a practicing physician. I’m a Tallahassee native and a graduate of the FSU College of Medicine, but I did my clinical years at the Fort Pierce campus and my residency training in Asheville, North Carolina. When I moved back CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

to the area in 2015, I really didn’t know any other physicians. In the past, I would probably have met many of you in the doctor’s lounge or in hospital hallways. However, as medicine has moved more towards outpatient care, we have been fragmented and have so many fewer opportunities to meet each other organically. As a primary care physician, I rely on many of you for help- not only for formal specialist consults and hospitalist care, but also for curbsides and advice. Capital Medical Society has provided the avenue through which I’ve been able to make these connections and form relationships, and I’m so grateful for this opportunity. As the practice of medicine continues to evolve, through the adoption of new technologies as well as changes to regulations and standards of practice, it will become even more important to actively create opportunities for physicians to network and form relationships. Better communication will benefit patients, but it will also benefit us as physicians. I know I feel better when I know who I can call or text for help or advice. We can also help each other advocate for ourselves and

our profession. As many of you know, we send a delegation to the FMA meeting every year to represent your local medical community, but we also have a unique opportunity here in Tallahassee to advocate at the Capitol for the practice of medicine, and CMS can help facilitate this. There are opportunities to serve as Doctor of the Day or work with CMS or your specialty society to help shape legislation that impacts our profession. Moving forward, my goals for the year are to better engage our current members and bring in new members. We would like to have more informal social events to facilitate this and I welcome your ideas and suggestions. If you have colleagues who are not CMS members, please reach out to themencourage them to join, or at least bring them to an event so they can see the benefit for themselves! Together we are stronger, happier, better physicians. I’m grateful for your support and look forward to seeing you all soon at a CMS event!

2023 CMS FOUNDATION HOLIDAY AUCTION

ANNUAL HOLIDAY AUCTION SUCCESSFULLY MIXES FUN, FUNDRAISING By Tom Block, CMS Foundation Executive Director The 22nd annual Capital Medical Society Foundation Holiday Auction was a festive affair as the local medical community placed competitive bids on a plethora of donated items, while also bidding adieu to two long-time fixtures at the Foundation. The annual auction supports the We Care Network and scholarships for FSU College of Medicine students. The We Care Network program has coordinated over $130 million in donated, specialty medical care to low-income, uninsured adult patients in our community since its inception in 1992. The Foundation’s Scholarship Fund has awarded $777,000 to FSU College of Medicine students since its inaugural Class of 2005. This year’s festivities served as the farewell event-at least in an official capacity-for two long-time fixtures at the Capital Medical Society Foundation, Dr. John Mahoney and Executive Director Pam Irwin. Dr. Mahoney stepped down after twenty years of service as president of the Foundation Board of Directors, while Ms. Irwin retired after nearly a decade at the helm of the Foundation and the Capital Medical Society. Both shared heartfelt remarks with the spirited crowd, as did outgoing CMS President Dr. Sarah Ko. She relayed an amazing story that demonstrates the importance and value of the We Care Network. Dr. Ko spoke of a mother from Lagos who had raised 10 children and was suffering from severe glaucoma with barely functional vision. She was in need of cataract surgery. Dr. Ko was able to perform minimally invasive glaucoma surgery at the same time as cataract surgery. This positive life-changing procedure for a woman without insurance but with failing vision was made possible by the We Care Network.

The auction itself was highly successful, raising over $80,000 after expenses. The splendid event featured a couple of new twists too. The floor plan in the banquet room at the Dunlap Champions Club was more open, with silent auction items spread throughout the space and the live auction stage positioned in the center of the room to garner the attention of all attendees. Hugh Tomlinson, a local community emcee, served as auctioneer for the evening, directing traffic and driving the bidding from the participating guests. Live auction items included the always-coveted parking spots at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare and HCA Florida Capital Hospital, which raised nearly $10,000 among them. Additional items included a prized photo from Dr. Andrew Borom entitled “Branch Manager;” a “Tidal Surge” painting from the talented Dr. Charles Manning; a paring knife and oyster shucker from Dr. Manning’s bladesmith son, Will; 2 FSU Seminole fan experience packages donated by Seminole Boosters, Inc.; 14 carat white gold diamond hoop earrings from Robert’s Jewelry; a feral hog hunt Hugh Tomlinson, a local for 2 compliments community emcee, served as of J. Alan Cox; auctioneer for the evening. a “Playing the Odds” scratch off lottery bonanza donated by Radiology Associates; and an 1861 Bourbon and Distillery tour gifted by outgoing director Pam Irwin. Equally as impressive as the live auction items were the 159 silent auction items procured and packaged by the CMS Alliance auction committee, CMS staff, and countless other donors, and subsequently monetized for

the Capital Medical Society Foundation by smartphone-toting bidders who furiously worked their fingers and their phones to secure the items of their desire. The CMS Foundation Holiday Auction’s success is possible due to the unwavering and generous support of its attendees, donors, bidders, and sponsors. This year, we extend great gratitude to our two title sponsors, EMTeLink, the medical and health app that provides health records and information services, and Westminster Oaks Active Living Community, which regularly hosts our CMS membership meetings. A tip of our Santa cap also goes to this year’s presenting sponsors, the FSU College of Medicine, Gynecology and Obstetrics Associates of Tallahassee, Neighborhood Medical Center, and Periodontal Associates of North Florida. Nearly 50 other corporate sponsors pledged their support, along with numerous individual sponsors who helped ensure fundraising success! Also on hand to ensure fundraising success were ten FSU College of Medicine students who volunteered to help guests register on OneCause, serve as Live Auction spotters, and help gather items at the end of the event. All ten are 2023 CMSF Scholarship recipients, including siblings Braden and Rachel Cathey who participated in a live question and answer session with Dr. Mahoney that gave credence to the significance of their scholarships to their studies.

I would be remiss if I didn’t salute the incredible staff at the Capital Medical Society Foundation, led by event-planner extraordinaire Shannon Boyle, and auction aficionado Rosalie Carlin, both of whom worked tirelessly before, during, and after the event to ensure perfection. From tweaking the menu, to refining the decorations, to managing RSVPs, to maintaining the OneCause auction website and handling every other detail no matter how large or small, these two were one terrific tandem. Thanks also to the We Care Network staff and our office volunteer, Robert Kirk, for pitching in and doing a great job assisting in various capacities. Save the date for the 23rd annual Capital Medical Society Foundation Holiday Auction on December 5, 2024. And remember, it’s never too early to start dropping off auction items at the CMS office.

WILLIAM FREDERICK LINDSEY, M.D. AND JIMMIE MOORE LINDSEY SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT

WILLIAM FREDERICK LINDSEY, M.D. AND JIMMIE MOORE LINDSEY SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT By Charles D. Williams, M.D., FACR

The Capital Medical Society Foundation has been blessed to have received a one hundred thousand dollar scholarship endowment to honor Dr. Fred Lindsey and his wife Jimmie Lindsey from their three living children, David Lindsey, Bob Lindsey, and Fredda Lindsey Ellis.

Fred and Jimmie were both from farming communities in South Georgia. They met in college and married in Adel, GA, on June 22, 1952. She supported him by working as a schoolteacher while he completed medical school, internship, and radiology residency. They moved to Tallahassee in 1959. Fred joined Dr. David McCulloch, the sole radiologist in Tallahassee, to form what is now Radiology Associates of Tallahassee.

Dr. Fred and Mrs. Jimmie Lindsey would be extremely pleased to know their wonderful children would establish this scholarship in their honor. With his family's encouragement and support, Fred became a successful doctor, businessman, legend, entrepreneur, philanthropist, wonderful father, and loving husband. He passed these qualities to their children. Jimmie was the love of his life. He always said that he could not have succeeded without her backing and support. Their seventy-year love affair was the foundation of their lives together. They were a tremendous inspiration to their five children and always pushed them to succeed in education and their careers. This scholarship makes it possible for others to succeed in their education.

William Frederick Lindsey, M.D.

Dr. Lindsey served on many boards and was active both formally and informally in improving healthcare services in Tallahassee. He was president of the Florida Radiological Society, appointed to the State Board of Health, and often participated in the Capital Medical Society, for which he was instrumental in obtaining a building that is still the society’s main office. He was an emeritus member of the Capital Medical Society’s Foundation Board, and he was Chief of the Medical Staff at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. Governor Kirk appointed him to the state’s Space and Nuclear Medicine Committee where he served as president of that committee. He represented the state’s nuclear society on several trips throughout the United States and Europe.

WILLIAM FREDERICK LINDSEY, M.D. AND JIMMIE MOORE LINDSEY SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT

He was particularly proud of his efforts to get the first Cobalt unit in North Florida. He worked at TMH for 40 years, and he loved the doctors on the medical staff and at Radiology Associates. After retirement from TMH, he wanted to stay medically active and worked at the Veteran’s Hospital here in town until his retirement. He retired from the practice of radiology after 49 years. Dr. Lindsey was innovative and thought outside the box. He was equally passionate about his private commercial interests and market investments. After he returned from serving in the Army in Japan, he cofounded, with his older brother, the Dixie Oil Company. He was able to do this with the earnings from the Army that he had saved. Fred, his brother, and his cousin built the company to hundreds of gas stations. During his lifetime, he invested and was a partner in various business and real estate ventures. He was particularly proud of being one of the founders of Innovation Park in Tallahassee. He also served on the boards and invested in many local businesses, including several locally owned banks. Fred and Jimmie were both cofounders of

Forestmeadows Park and Athletic Center in Tallahassee, which is now owned by the city. He was a director of mobile home industries for over 20 years. Fred left his mark on both the medical and business communities. The Capital Medical Society Foundation is grateful to the Lindsey family for this generous donation for medical education in honor of their parents, Fred and Jimmie Lindsey. We're also grateful to Pam Irwin, who has been working with Bob, David, and Fredda over the past two years to establish this legacy in honor of their parents, Dr. Fred and Mrs. Jimmie Lindsey. May Dr. Fred and Mrs. Jimmie Lindsey continue to live on in the hearts and minds of the members of the Capital Medical Society and the scholarship recipients through the family’s generous endowment.

TO CONTRIBUTE... To the William Frederick Lindsey, M.D. and Jimmie Moore Lindsey Scholarship Endowment, you may write a check to the Capital Medical Society Foundation, 1204 Miccosukee Road, Tallahassee, FL 32308, or visit https://capmed.org/donate/.

DONATE TO THE CMS FOUNDATION

THE IMPACT OF YOUR DONATIONS The Capital Medical Society Foundation’s community of donors strategically help fulfill its mission “to support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.” ➢ Access to healthcare is increased through gifts to the We Care Network and the We Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $130 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2022-23, which ended June 30, 2023, more than $5 million in healthcare was donated. Gifts support patient assistance such as medication, transportation, and durable medical equipment, as well as operational expenses of the program including salaries of the case management team who coordinate the donated care. ➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at the FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the CMS Foundation Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $61,000 was awarded

in 2023. An additional $1,000 was awarded from The Anesthesiology Associates of Tallahassee Scholarship Fund. The Julia Revell St. Petery, M.D. Scholarship in Pediatrics and The J. Orson Smith, M.D. Scholarship in Internal Medicine were also awarded in 2023. ➢ Gifts to the Capital Medical Society Foundation help provide operational resources for the Capital Medical Society Foundation. In addition, modest grants are awarded to area non-profits whose programs improve access to healthcare for the underserved. In 2023, the CMSF awarded a total of $14,000 in grants to the Big Bend Hospice Foundation for bereavement services, Elder Care Services for in-home services to seniors, Lighthouse of the Big Bend to provide services to the visually impaired, and to Lutheran Social Services of North Florida, Inc. for the KidSafe program.
