FEBRUARY EDITION, VOLUME 2024, NO. 2
A MESSAGE FROM YOUR 2024 CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY PRESIDENT By Helen Paulson, M.D., CMS President Dear Colleagues, Happy New Year and welcome to another year with the Capital Medical Society! I am honored to serve as your 2024 President. 2023 was the year the COVID pandemic “officially” ended, though some of the changes we adopted stay with us, and some of the challenges persist as well. Through it all, Capital Medical Society has been a trusted source of information and support. As we begin 2024, we bid a fond farewell and happy retirement to executive director Pam Irwin. We wish her the very best and are so grateful for her leadership. She welcomed me on to the board and has taught me so much about the importance of the Society, Foundation, Services, and of course the Alliance, to our community. We will miss her! We welcome our new executive director Tom Block. His name is familiar to many of us from his career in broadcasting. I’m looking forward to getting to know him better as we work together to grow and better our organization. I am also grateful for all the help and support from Shannon Boyle and Rosalie Carlin, as well as our outgoing President Dr. Sarah Ko, President-Elect Dr. Russell Cole, and all of our board members. In 2024, CMS will continue our many programmatic offerings- the Physician
Wellness Program, high-quality CME, practice management education, and CE Broker support. I have especially enjoyed our CME offerings, learning from my peers about many interesting topics, including long COVID and cardiac electrophysiology. There is so much value in hearing from local physicians about new and emerging issues and we have another great slate lined up for this year. Our special events bring our community together - the Celebration Awards Dinner is an opportunity to honor our accomplished colleagues, and the CMSF Holiday Auction is a lot of fun while supporting the We Care Network and medical education. The Capital Medical Society, along with so many other organizations, is at an inflection point in our history. Our active members see the value in membership through our ongoing programs and events. Even more, when the pandemic struck and everything changed overnight, the Society stepped up through information dissemination and PPE procurement coordination. Beyond these, though, is the invaluable and intangible support of connection with our colleagues and peers- and this has meant the most to me since returning to Tallahassee as a practicing physician. I’m a Tallahassee native and a graduate of the FSU College of Medicine, but I did my clinical years at the Fort Pierce campus and my residency training in Asheville, North Carolina.
