INTRODUCING CAPITAL MEDICAL SOCIETY’S NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, TOM BLOCK

A new year always brings new goals, and in my case 2024 welcomes a new role as executive director at the Capital Medical Society and the Capital Medical Society Foundation. I am incredibly excited and privileged to have assumed this position, and extremely appreciative of the warm welcome I’ve received from the many of you I’ve met already. I’m also very grateful for the terrific legacy of outgoing Executive Director Pam Irwin, who has worked tirelessly during her tenure to successfully lead and elevate CMS and the CMS Foundation. I’ve had the chance to observe and learn from Pam over the last several weeks, which has been very beneficial during this time of transition. The respect and trust she has earned from each of you is readily apparent, and though she leaves big shoes to fill…I will do my best to fill them. I wish Pam a long, happy, and fulfilling retirement (and also hope she doesn’t stray too far from her cell phone, at least during my first few months on the job)!

So just how did I get to the Capital Medical Society?

Let me fill in some blanks, as it was certainly a circuitous route. I grew up in South Florida, my mother a nurse and my father a firefighter. By high school I was heavily involved in sports and my initial career aspiration was in physical therapy/athletic training, probably because my pIaying days had turned me into a very experienced orthopedic patient, from separated shoulders to broken ankles and various other ailments and injuries in between. My senior year I added a broken collarbone to the mix, which ended my football season but started a broadcasting career as my high school-South Plantation-was one of few at the time that had a television production class, including a TV show for the football coach. I wound up hosting the coach’s show, moved on to Florida State where I earned a degree in communication (and later my masters), and spent a dozen years full time in the broadcast business, including several as sports director at WTXL in Tallahassee.

As the media landscape began to change and became less secure, I sought more stability and entered the higher education arena at Florida State University. I

started in communication, evolved to alumni relations where I managed the Seminole Clubs at the FSU Alumni Association and ultimately ascended to highlevel leadership roles, including campaign manager for the university's inaugural billion-dollar campaign and most recently vice president at the FSU Foundation.

These varied experiences helped foster skills in a number of areas, including board relations, donor stewardship, event planning, team management, project management, leadership, advancement operations and more.

While I was honored to serve my alma mater for 20 years, it was time for a change. I began exploring new professional opportunities in 2023, and jumped at this challenge as soon as I became aware. It’s a position that connects me back, at least tangentially, to my original aspiration while also allowing me to utilize the skills I developed in the various professional roles I’ve held over the years. It also allows me to connect and work with a group for whom I have immense respect, the local medical community, for the betterment of the patient and our local counties of Leon, Jefferson, Wakulla, and Gadsden.

On a personal note, let me add that my wife Laura and I are proud parents of two actively engaged kids in the Tallahassee community. My daughter Reagan is a freshman at Chiles who spends much of her free time performing at Young Actors Theatre, and my son Nolan is a 7th grader at Deerlake who loves all things sports, especially soccer. We’re generally coming or going on Meridian Road as we shuttle them around, and when we head out of town it’s often to New Orleans, my wife’s hometown.

I’m thrilled to be here and look forward to serving you in my new capacity as we work together on behalf of the Capital Medical Society and the Capital Medical Society Foundation. Please stop by the office or reach out any time if you have questions or concerns.

Thank You to Pam Irwin After 9 ½ years as Executive Director of the Capital Medical Society, Pam Irwin retired on December 31, 2023.

The Capital Medical Society wishes her well on her next adventure!

“As a newcomer to Tallahassee, Pam made sure to find ways for me to be involved with CMS and made me feel very welcome in a new city, both of which I am very thankful for. She will be missed at CMS, but I wish her a wonderful retirement!”

- Del Carter, M.D. “I’ve worked with Pam for many years, first at Hospice, then as a Development Officer at the College of Medicine and finally at CMS. While we were sorry to lose her going to CMS, this was clearly the right path at the right time. Her organizational skills and leadership were perfect for the role as she led CMS to new heights and steered it through COVID. Her regular updates/ coordination with the health department were amazing during that time. Her warmth, caring nature, and enthusiasm were infectious. I remember stopping by to pick up my auction items at the office after the virtual event and she was her usual optimistic self, saying we actually made money since we didn’t have the big bar tab. (She did love doctors though!). She is one of a kind and will be missed.”

I will always remember with gratitude the way Pam organized a virtual presidential installation for my family and I in 2021 in the heat of the pandemic.

Over the years, I have enjoyed getting to know Pam as a good friend and am immensely grateful for her support and insights during my time on the board, executive committee and our delegation to the FMA. Best wishes as you embark on new endeavors!”

You kindly sat next to me, and whispered in my ear what to say and when to move debate forward. You were the real leader that day, but you let me take all the credit!

“I first heard of Pam when she was working at Westminster Oaks. I met her for the first time when she was working at Big Bend Hospice Foundation.

I really got to know her when she came to work as a development officer at the FSU College of Medicine.

Over that time we worked closely together with a number of donors, traveling together to our regional campuses and, while I can say we were disappointed that she was leaving the College of Medicine, I was pleased when I learned that she was leaving to go to Capital Medical Society. Watching her over the last 10 years at the medical society, I think she really found her dream job and she really excelled in it. She was meticulous in making sure that the members of the CMS received the support they needed to provide excellent patient care and thrive in their profession.

The We Care program and the scholarship programs for students at Florida State College of Medicine were clearly among the things she saw as vital successes of CMS and she worked hard personally and with her team to make sure they were supported. Another one of her highlights was supporting the delegates to the FMA from the Capital Medical Society. She ensured that we

“So, after almost ten years of leading complex not-forprofit and for-profit organizations, she informed me she wanted to retire. Pam Irwin has had remarkable successes in expanding access to our most needy patients in specialty medical and dental healthcare and maintaining membership strength in our medical society.

On her initiative, Ms. Irwin organized a healthcare information network during the COVID-19 pandemic with added value services to all physicians in desperate need of masks, facial shields, and any other support services she conjured out of the fog of uncertainty. Yet, in her last year, she faced a few bittersweet life challenges best left to the past.

She had the most robust three-board support for her term of office as Executive Director that I have seen since I experienced our first Executive Director, Diane Pickett.

Pam wanted to retire on her terms. It was the best time for her and her family.

We all wanted to celebrate and thank her for her sterling service to our physicians, patients, and the community.

Not surprisingly, Pam declined. She desired to stay on through December 31st, get all three organizations ready for the transition, solidify board membership and leadership for our three services, ensure the success of the Holiday Auction, and, most importantly, help this physician organization select the most qualified replacement Executive Director within budget, of course!

Is anyone surprised that Pam accomplished all of this within record time? We appreciate your passion for your role as our executive director. Your accomplishments will be remembered by all who collaborated with you. You are exemplary.

“As president of the CMS Services Board of Directors, I have worked closely with Pam for the past ten years.

Services is the for-profit arm of the Capital Medical Society, and, as such, is charged with generating funds that can be used by the Society to further its goals. As a taxable organization, the rules that apply to it are different from the non-profit roles of CMS.

“Thanks to Pam for her hard work and leadership over the years. Especially thankful for her obtaining PPE during the early stages of COVID and making it available to offices and individuals. Will miss her smiling face at the CMS meetings. Best wishes.”

Because of her previous work with the Big Bend Hospice and the FSU Foundation, Pam was familiar with the rules that had to be followed for each organization. She was assiduous in following all of them, and she was able to counsel the directors in what was or was not allowed under the applicable tax codes. I always appreciated her thoroughness in directing how the Services Board should function.

“Pam Irwin was the right person at the right time to be the CEO of the Capital Medical Society. She had the perfect skills, background, professionalism, and personality to effectively lead. She is a rare individual with the ability to instantly place others at ease, intently listening to their words and ideas. To say she has invested a colossal amount of time on our behalf is a gross understatement. She is a fair and thoughtful individual and was a valuable ambassador for our society. She will be missed and we wish her the best.”

COVID-19 was the major test for CMS, and while most members are familiar with Pam’s role in keeping up with all the governmental directives and disseminating them to our members, few realize that her supervision also saved the Services Board at a time when insolvency loomed. The society lost financial sponsors during the pandemic, and the Services Board was the most affected because of the cutbacks in advertising by our meeting sponsors. Pam’s leadership helped instigate cost saving measures including the transition of the Cap Scan publication from a monthly hard copy to an online magazine.

Somehow, Pam was able to master all the accounting changes over the past few years despite having several personal challenges that would certainly have sidelined anyone else.

On a personal note, I found Pam to be an excellent communicator with a pleasant demeanor, which was rarely shaken even in the worst days of the pandemic.

Her sense of duty to the physician community went above the requirements of her job, and I sincerely think that the reason the Society was able to function was because of Pam. I will miss working with her. She was always on time, on point, and on duty. There was never any slack in her lines, and our medical community will sustain itself because of her efforts. Godspeed, Pam! You can look forward to retirement knowing that you fulfilled a vital role in our society and the medical community of North Florida.”

ALLIANCE CORNER

A MESSAGE FROM THE 2023 PRESIDENT As the 2023 President, I wanted my theme for the year to be growth. I wanted our members to grow, as well as our organization. I hoped our organization would make more of an impact in the community. I aimed at increasing opportunities to grow connections amongst each other within the organization. We continued old traditions and began some new ones. Our members and Committees collaborated and supported the CMS, the FSU COM Food Pantry, The Family Promise of the Big Bend, as well as the PAEC and their events. We organized a healthcare education project for our community. We offered social events for members to connect and learn new skills. We gave scholarships to 3 local nursing students who plan to stay in Tallahassee. We participated in the FMAA’s Walk for Wellness, learned charcuterie building skills, floral arranging, and participated in fundraising efforts for several organizations. We had a productive year and were able to get many new members and re-engage old members. Overall, I see 2023 as a huge success. I credit the outstanding board and committee members I had on my team. We worked seamlessly, and even through the stresses

of planning events, everyone was positive and worked diligently to make each event a wonderful success.

Thank you to the CMS and CMSF for their continuous support of the CMSA and our endeavors. The collaboration has resulted in engagement of our physicians and their spouses to make our medical community so well– connected. I’m appreciative of all the support I received last year. I know incoming President, Michelle Reyes and her board, will be fantastic, and we look forward to continuing working with the CMS.

CALLING FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE I.B. HARRISON, M.D. HUMANITARIAN AWARD AND THE THOMAS L. HICKS, M.D. OUTSTANDING PHYSICIAN AWARD The Capital Medical Society and the Capital Medical Society Alliance will host the annual Celebration Awards Dinner on March 28, 2024 at the Dunlap Champions Club at FSU, in honor of Doctors’ Day. At the event, we will be awarding the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award, a prestigious award initiated by Capital Health Plan, and the Thomas L. Hicks, M.D. Outstanding Physician Award.

The criteria for the awards differ. The criteria for the I.B. Harrison, M.D. Humanitarian Award are predicated on the values that came to be associated with the late Dr. I.B. Harrison: treating all patients with respect and dignity.

Dr. Harrison was known as the voice for the ethical, compassionate practice of medicine. He is not only the inspiration for the award, but its first recipient, as well.

Dr. I.B. Harrison has always personified the best of our medical profession. During his lengthy career in the Tallahassee medical community, Dr. Harrison taught and influenced many local physicians. THE IMPACT OF YOUR DONATIONS The Capital Medical Society Foundation’s community of donors strategically help fulfill its mission “to support the charitable efforts of physicians and others, increase access to healthcare, promote education and serve the community’s health needs through innovative projects that are exemplary, affordable and dignified.” ➢ Access to healthcare is increased through gifts to the We Care Network and the We Care Network Endowment Fund. More than $130 million in donated specialty medical and dental care has been provided to low-income, uninsured patients since the program was created in 1992. In fiscal year 2022-23, which ended June 30, 2023, more than $5 million in healthcare was donated.

Gifts support patient assistance such as medication, transportation, and durable medical equipment, as well as operational expenses of the program including salaries of the case management team who coordinate the donated care. ➢ To provide incentives to keep medical students trained at the FSU College of Medicine in the Big Bend after completion of their residencies and help meet the growing demand for physicians in Florida, gifts to the CMS Foundation Scholarship Fund provide scholarships to FSU College of Medicine students who have expressed an interest in returning to the Big Bend to practice after completion of their residencies. $61,000 was awarded

in 2023. An additional $1,000 was awarded from The Anesthesiology Associates of Tallahassee Scholarship Fund. The Julia Revell St. Petery, M.D. Scholarship in Pediatrics and The J. Orson Smith, M.D. Scholarship in Internal Medicine were also awarded in 2023. ➢ Gifts to the Capital Medical Society Foundation help provide operational resources for the Capital Medical Society Foundation. In addition, modest grants are awarded to area non-profits whose programs improve access to healthcare for the underserved. In 2023, the CMSF awarded a total of $14,000 in grants to the Big Bend Hospice Foundation for bereavement services, Elder Care Services for in-home services to seniors, Lighthouse of the Big Bend to provide services to the visually impaired, and to Lutheran Social Services of North Florida, Inc. for the KidSafe program.
