Meet Ravengriim

What sparked your passion for cosplay, and how did you transition into the tattoo scene?

I've always had a love for cosplay since I was a kid and loved tattoos as well, so I feel like I just combined my love for both things instead of picking one to "niche down" into. I personally like to post about many things instead of just one topic.

How do you incorporate elements of horror into your cosplay, and what draws you to that genre? With horror characters it's easy since they are inherently that. Often times though, especially during Halloween months, I'll add blood or scarier contacts and darker makeup to make things a little bit more creepy. Again this goes back to being something I've just always loved. Horror is such a fun genre for so many reasons, but I particularly love the paranormal and sfx makeup!

What has been your most memorable experience as a cosplayer in the tattoo community?

There are so many but I'd have to say in combining both, when I'm told that my tattoos elevate the cosplay, that is memorable for me because sometimes I worry that my tattoos don't work for certain cosplays. It is a touch of personal style!

How do you balance your unique artistic style with the traditional aspects of cosplay and tattoo art?

I think cosplay in itself is about expressing yourself and the love for the character. It doesn't have to be perfect and can be just fun! So being myself and creating with that in mind is balance for me.

What challenges have you faced in merging cosplay with the tattoo scene, and how have you overcome them?

To be honest, I thankfully haven't had many challenges with combining the two. I think there's a huge overlap in tattoos and anime; there's even a convention which I haven't been to yet that combines the two!

The biggest challenge would just be me thinking my tattoos might not work for a certain cosplay, in which case I can cover them, but I've very rarely done that.

In your opinion, what role does tattoo art play in enhancing cosplay and character representation?

For certain characters I think it enhances them, and it can lend a personal style to your cosplay, making it very you as well! For example, characters like Ino Yamanaka; I feel it can elevate the look due to her background—her husband has a technique that involves art, and people have said things like "Imagine Sai designed Ino's tattoos!" Which I agree, would have been so cool. It is interesting how tattoos can connect to a character.

How do you see the relationship between cosplay and tattoos evolving in the future?

I think there will continue to be an overlap. Art and cosplay/anime have always been intertwined in so many ways, like crafting, drawing and much more...so it's only natural for there to be a relationship with tattoos as well!

What advice would you give to other cosplayers looking to explore the tattoo scene and make their mark?

My best advice would be to do it because you love it! It doesn't have to be immaculate or 100% accurate to the character, make it your own and have fun. With tattoos, be 100% sure before you get one and get what you like. Don't let someone else tell you what to get! It's permanent and laser removal hurts.

Artistic Journey: Can you share your journey into the world of tattooing? What inspired you to become a tattoo artist, and how did you develop your unique style?

It was over 10 years ago when I was about 15-16 years old. I used to draw a lot late at night and try tattooing with a homemade tattoo machine. Later, my friends and family saw the potential in it and started supporting me. Since then, tattooing and I have become one.

As for my unique style, I just experimented and did what felt right. Eventually, after doing a tattoo in gray and pink, and posting it on Instagram, it became very popular. Now, it's my main style, and clients come from all corners of the world.

Creative Process: What does your creative process look like when

designing a tattoo? How do you collaborate with clients to ensure their vision is realized while also incorporating your artistic flair?

First of all, I ask the client what they would like to see in their tattoo and what they definitely wouldn't want. Then, I prepare the design, and for that, I need a calm environment. On the day of the session, we finalize the design and begin the tattoo. As for talent, I'm not sure how to answer that, but I definitely use my vision and all the experience I've gained.

Tattoo Trends: As a tattoo artist, how do you stay updated on current trends in tattoo art? Are there specific styles or themes you find yourself gravitating towards lately?

I think so. Right now, I'm very actively participating in tattoo conventions and connecting not only with tattoo artists but also with owners of various tattoo businesses. As for style, I can say that I'm currently enjoying my gray and pink style. Especially when clients sincerely compliment me on its uniqueness and how it really expresses me among other artists.

Challenges in the Industry:

What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a tattoo artist in Charlotte, NC? How do you navigate these challenges to continue growing your business and artistry?

I wouldn't say that I'm facing problems right now, but I can judge how others are dealing with them. Mainly, tattoo artists has problems with clients base at the beginning of their journey, for two reasons:

1. There's a lot of competition among beginner tattoo artists.

2. They don't spend enough time on self-development, they don't try to improve their quality or stand out from the crowd. But I think this is a common problem, not only in the tattoo industry.

Client Relationships: Building a rapport with clients is crucial in this industry. How do you establish trust with clients, especially when they're getting a tattoo for the first time?

Clients who are getting a tattoo for the first time usually ask a lot of questions and try to control everything. They often don't trust the artist due to the lack of experience. I try to be patient and polite, asking the right questions in advance. And it's even better to do all of this in person by inviting them for a consultation!

Sponsored Artist Experience: How has being sponsored by @ghosttattooco and @emalla.official impacted your career? What opportunities have arisen from these partnerships?

It's a very interesting and, at the same time, very responsible experience to be part of a pro team. I've had the opportunity to experience the tattoo industry from a completely different perspective. It's a great honor to be in a team where your opinion matters a lot in order to improve the product. I get sent new products for reviews and am invited to be a judge at tattoo conventions

Future Aspirations: Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future of your tattoo career? Are there any specific projects or collaborations you're excited about in the coming years?

I am planning to make a full body project on pink style tattoo and visit more tattoo conventions

Advice for Aspiring Artists: What advice would you give to aspiring tattoo artists who are just starting out? Are there any key lessons you've learned along the way that you wish you had known earlier?

Don't skimp on supplies and invest in a good, high-quality tattoo machine More practice and perseverance!
