Long before I knew Canyon Creek Life’s publishers Kyla and Mike personally, our sweet dog Daisy was featured as the Pet of the Month. Truthfully, I didn’t think much of it at the time, but it was fun to see her in the magazine because she means so much to our family. Daisy became a “celebrity” for a month or two, though, with our neighbors who got to know her in print.

When I tell my friends who live in other Dallas suburbs about Canyon Creek, they marvel at how unique it is. None I have spoken to get to enjoy a locally published magazine or a shopping center in the middle of their neighborhood that’s home to some amazing locally owned businesses. They don’t have generations of the same family living within biking distance of one another. And they don’t get to enjoy a homegrown group like the Canyon Creek Moms Club featured in this issue.

I like to think that Mike and Kyla play a part in our closeness by bringing stories to us about the people, pets and businesses which make Canyon Creek so special. Sometimes story ideas come from our brainstorming sessions. Occasionally the genesis is a Facebook post, as is the case with our Pet of the Month Tigger, who recently caused quite the stir on the Residents page! Our Golden Couple of the Month, Teri and Frank Riha, are dear friends whom I met years ago at Sweet Firefly. Talk about making retirement look fun…they certainly do. I can’t wait for you to “meet” them. And the young athletes in this issue are basketball champions building amazing memories together.

As always, I am grateful for the chance to get to know so many of you through this sweet publication. I hope you feel the same way. And I hope you’ll frequent the advertisers who make Canyon Creek Life possible. If you have a story idea for us, please share it! It’s always so fun to chat with a neighbor.

Happy spring!

Patti Otte

P.S. Have you noticed the new park at the intersection of Collins and Fall Creek? That’s the brand-new Jay Dalehite Park. The CCHOA is hosting a dedication on May 4 at 11:00 am. Hope to see you there.

Tigger Canyon Creek's Playful "Tiger in Residence"

Tell us your pet’s name. What type of pet is he or she? How old? And how long have you had your pet?

Tigger is an 18-month-old Bengal cat that we brought home in December of 2022.

How did Tigger become a member of your family?

Our daughter had been asking for a kitty of her own for about a year when we finally gave in and began looking for a cat breed that would fit our lifestyle and bring some joy to our family and especially our daughter. We looked into cat breeds that are family-friendly, playful and good dog companions (we have a 4-year-old pup who needed a little buddy to play with).

We fell in love with the personality and characteristics of a Bengal cat and soon discovered an excellent breeder in the DFW area. We had to wait several months for a litter to be born and a spot to be -

come available, but when the time came, we were able to choose this sweet little boy out of a litter of 3 kittens. Our daughter was thrilled and was the one to decide his name, Tigger, after his looks as well as playful personality.

Tell us more about Tigger.

Tigger is quite the character! He loves chasing pretty much anything that moves and loves problem-solving ways to get what he wants. He is extremely affectionate with every family member and is always in the midst of the action of the house. He is quite adept at climbing and jumping…we

have seen him jump up to 6 ft to get at a toy! We had no idea how much he would live up to his name--Tigger! He is full of energy and curiosity. He doesn't want to just play with a toy; he wants to figure out what makes it work.

Tigger is also very social and highly talkative, sometimes having full-on "conversations" with me by chirping and mewing in response to my questions about his day. He not only loves our family but is very kind to newcomers as well. Every guest that comes to our door is greeted by Tigger with a sniff and a 'meow' and maybe even

a snuggle. While he is playful by day, he is a cuddle bug by night, extremely affectionate and usually demanding pets at bedtime.

Does Tigger have a “favorite” family member? If so, how does he express that preference?

Our 12-year-old daughter, Lily, has always been his favorite member of the house. Her room is his little castle with lots of toys for him to play with and beds set up for him to sleep in, but he inevitably always sleeps right next to his mama--Lily. He will go to her for comfort and knows when she comes home from school and will be on the lookout for her until she gets home.

What is your favorite story/memory about Tigger?

There are so many! One of my personal favorites was when I brought home a cat water fountain for him to use. As soon as I brought it out, he was completely puzzled by the contraption. Once I set it up and put water in it and got it to work, he immediately started batting at the water and refused to even sip from it. Batting the water wasn't enough; he HAD to figure out WHERE the water was coming from, so he would use his paw to lift up the lid, spilling water EVERYWHERE, to see the hose that was underneath pumping the water. I tried several times to get him to actually drink from it, but every time was the same result: water everywhere and a kitty that was proud he had figured out the mystery of the water fountain.

Tell us about your family. How long have y’all lived in Canyon Creek?

My husband David and I moved our family of four (Lily, 12, and Micah, 8) from Chicago to Richardson in June of 2022. David was born and raised in Dallas until he left for college in 2001, so it has been a very exciting return for him to be back in his home state. We worked with local builder Shaddock Caldwell to build our dream home on Pebblebrook Circle and were

able to move in on November 29, 2022. My daughter attends RNJH and our son attends Prairie Creek Elementary.

What do you love most about living in Canyon Creek? Do you have a fun or awesome story of living in the neighborhood that you can share with us?

We've loved the 'small town' feeling of the Canyon Creek neighborhood after having lived in a major city for 13 years prior to moving here. We've loved seeing the neighborhood gather for festivities like the 4th of July and are so thankful for the friendly environment our kids get to grow up in. One of our neighbors even took us under their wing before we moved into our home on Pebblebrook and introduced us to several local happenings and events. We love taking walks around Prairie Creek and love being able to walk our son to school and cross such a picture-perfect bridge every day. Life in Canyon Creek has been a wonderful one and we are thankful for being able to call this neighborhood our home!

Teri and Frank Riha

Canyon Creek Life’s Golden Couple of the Month, Teri and Frank Riha, have been residents of the neighborhood for more than 30 years. In that time, they’ve created a beautiful home filled with love and laughter. Prior to being introduced by mutual friends and later marrying, both had experienced rich, full lives. Frank had a long and rewarding career with Chicago Title followed by a decade of selling real estate. Teri spent many happy years as an Executive Assistant at Northern

Trust. During their early lives, each had the opportunity to travel, to live in a variety of places, and to develop a thirst for seeing the world.

Despite having met and married later in life, the two have packed many exciting experiences into their time together and still enjoy each other’s company immensely. While the house happens to be quiet the day of our interview, it’s easy to imagine it bustling with the Rihas’ large, tightknit,

family on weekends and holidays. The couple share five children in their blended brood--Lisa, Kathy, Kelly, Brooke and Adam--along with eleven grandchildren and two great-grands. Brooke and her husband Jared Buckmeier live on Lookout Drive, as do Kelly and her husband Kyle Cole. The Rihas’ backyard on Canyon Valley Drive is often filled with family members playing Bingo or other games, hunting Easter eggs, dining together, or roasting S’mores in the fire pit.

ta Bakeshop or Staycation Coffee followed later by dinner at either of their favorite local restaurants, Sueño or Partenope Ristorante and ice cream at Sweet Firefly. Another night you might find them at the Eisemann enjoying a performance of some sort. Maybe they’ve even ventured down to Fair Park to catch a show. One thing’s for sure: the Rihas aren’t sitting around watching the time pass by.

Not only to do they take care of their physical health, Teri and Frank keep their minds sharp by doing crossword puzzles daily. They each do the Commuter crossword and Teri additionally tackles the NEA, the New York Times, and/or the Universal. Crossword puzzles are a daily ritual…they print the cross -

Frank always has a twinkle in his eye, as if he’s privy to a secret source of happiness the rest of us haven’t quite mastered, and Teri exudes joy wherever she goes. It’s clear that they are crazy about each other and recognize how lucky they are to have found each other so many years ago. Just as theirs is an untraditional love story, their retirement has also been memorable: it’s definitely not just a “sit around and grow old together” story. Instead, picture Teri and Frank having coffee/breakfast at La Casi-

In fact, you’ll find the couple at Richardson’s YMCA five mornings a week. They enjoy walking, having coffee at the Y, and taking time to visit with so many of their friends who’ve also been working out at the Y for years. The Rihas do cardio, lift weights, work with bands and take “Silver Sneakers” senior classes. They’re showing absolutely no sign of slowing down and smelling the roses!

words out, place them on clipboards, and get busy solving them. They also love to volunteer. Frank served meals with his son-in-law Kyle Cole for ten years through Collin County’s Meals on Wheels. And Teri is actively involved with the Richardson Woman’s Club, the Literary and Self-Improvement Society (LSIS), and the Canyon Creek Garden Club,

Other than spending time with family, Teri and Frank have enjoyed travelling most of all. When asked about their most memorable trip, the Rihas reminisce about a particular one during which they drove through Europe for a month with no particular destination in mind and ended up on the Amalfi Coast. From then on, Italy became their all-time favorite destination. Teri and Frank enjoy absolutely everything about Italy: the food, the wine, the museums, the culture, the art and the people. Tuscany is a special favorite for the wine, while they love Rome’s rich history. But their favorite place, by far, is Capri.

Next time you see the Rihas out and about or run into them at the YMCA one morning, stop and say hello. Your life will be enriched by knowing this dynamic couple.

heavier material, so keep that in mind if you're planning a kitchen remodel. Despite its drawbacks, marble is still a popular choice for kitchen countertops because of its classic beauty.

6 Countertop Materials to Consider for Your Kitchen: Beautiful and Durable Options

Your kitchen countertops take a lot of abuse. Not only do they have to withstand daily use, but they also have to look good doing it! That's why it's important to choose a material that is both beautiful and durable. Here are six countertop materials that are sure to meet both criteria and suit your kitchen's unique needs.

1. Granite

Kicking off our list is granite, one of the most popular countertop materials on the market. Granite is a natural stone that comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. It's also incredibly strong and resistant to heat, making it ideal for busy kitchens. Best of all, granite ages beautifully, so your countertops will only get better with time!

2. Quartz

Quartz is a man-made material that has many of the same properties as natural stone. It is incredibly strong and resistant to heat, scratches and stains. This makes quartz a perfect choice for busy kitchens. Whether you

are looking for a classic look or something more modern, quartz has the perfect style for you. The only downside to quartz is that it can be one of the more expensive countertop materials. If you're looking for a durable and beautiful countertop material and are ready to invest, quartz is a great option.

3. Soapstone

Soapstone is another popular natural stone option. It has a smooth, matte finish that is unique and elegant. Soapstone is also heat resistant and very durable. The only downside to soapstone is that it can be susceptible to staining, so you'll need to be careful with spills. Nevertheless, soapstone makes a beautiful and unique addition to any kitchen.

4. Marble

Like granite, marble is a natural stone that comes in a variety of colors and patterns. It's also heat resistant and very strong. However, marble is a bit more delicate than granite and can be scratched or stained if not properly cared for. It is also worth mentioning that marble is a

When it comes to affordable countertop materials, it's hard to beat laminate. Laminate is a man-made material that is composed of several layers of paper or plastic. It is then glued to a particle board or plywood base. Laminate is available in a wide variety of colors and patterns and can even mimic the look of natural stone. The main downside to laminate is that it is not as durable as some of the other materials on this list. It can also get scratched or burned if not properly cared for. Nevertheless, laminate is a popular choice for budget-conscious homeowners who are looking for an attractive countertop material.

6. Solid Surface

This list would not be complete without mentioning solid surface countertops. Solid surface is yet another man-made material that consists of a mixture of resin and acrylic. It can be molded into any shape, making it a versatile choice for kitchen countertops. Solid surface is also non-porous, so it resists stains and bacteria. Best of all, it's widely available and fairly easy for installers to work with. If you're looking for a material that is both beautiful and easy to care for, solid surface is a great option.

Final Thoughts

There you have it! Six countertop materials to consider for your kitchen. No matter what your budget or style, there is sure to be a material on this list that is perfect for you. When it comes time to choose your new countertops, keep these materials in mind and you're sure to find the perfect option for your kitchen.

Spotlight on Canyon Creek Moms Club

Being a mother, one of the greatest joys that life has to offer, is filled with love, connection and a brandnew perspective of the world. Through the Canyon Creek Moms Club (CCMC), we come together to build lasting friendships and serve as a support system for one another during this new, exciting and everchanging time in our lives.

“I feel so fortunate to be part of this amazing group,” says Kayla Sherwood, president of CCMC. “Over the past three years, I have met so many wonderful moms and made some of my very best friends being part of CCMC. We are incredibly lucky to have this group here in our own neighborhood and would encourage any new mom in Canyon Creek to join us.”

To build these connections, the CCMC regularly hosts unique and fun events throughout the year, including but not limited to:

Mom’s Night Out: As much as we cherish our sweet families, mamas need time away to recharge kid-free. We host monthly, moms-only happy hours, holiday parties, workout events, a couple’s night out (Fiesta), and other fun activities through the year.

Play Dates: A unique opportunity for moms and kids to play through crafts, mu-

sic activities and playdates at the local parks. Anyone in CCMC can host a playgroup; we have seen everything from an evening playdate at Hat Creek to a music class for toddlers.

Family Events: A few of our signature family events include the Easter Egg Hunt and Summer Pool Day, as well as our fall and holiday festivals.

Sunshine Meal Train: This unique service area of CCMC provides families with meals during the birth of new babies, as well as during times of sickness. We annually serve around 15 meal trains to moms in Canyon Creek Moms Club.

In addition to our array of events, CCMC is constantly giving back and serving the local community. Last year we partnered with ELEVATE Youth North Texas. Through this program, we donated more than 250 winter items to those in need and hosted a service

event with the youth before the holidays. At the event we enjoyed building gingerbread houses and sharing a hot meal together. This relationship with ELEVATE Youth North Texas has been incredibly meaningful for CCMC as it has also provided an opportunity to show the young children of the neighborhood the importance of service and giving back.

As our neighborhood continues to grow, we are excited to have added 50 new members to the group this year, increasing our membership to 157. If you're looking to connect with other moms, get involved in community service and build lasting friendships, we invite you to join us. TOTO POPS

The Cutest Dessert Trike in the Neighborhood!

What is your name and the name of your business? How long have you been open?

My name is Brandon Jarke and my business is Toto Pops. We started this business at the end of summer last year.

Tell us about Toto Pops.

Toto Pops is a mobile dessert tricycle from which we serve paleta pops. The idea of making and selling paletas was always something my best friend, Jose Martinez, wanted to do (he comes from a lineage of paleteros in Oaxaca, Mexico), but starting a store seemed like a risky investment. Then the tricycle idea came to us. It would be a (fairly) easy-to-start side business, it would allow us to be a part of community and city events, and we could also test out selling paletas before doing anything bigger.

How is a paleta pop different from a popsicle?

The main differences between a paleta and a popsicle lies in their ingredients, flavors and preparation methods. Available in a

wide range of flavors, paletas are considered a healthier choice because they are made with whole, natural ingredients, such as fresh fruits and a milk/cream base. In contrast, popsicles are commonly mass-produced with artificial flavors and colors.

What are your most popular flavors?

We have both cream-based and water-based Toto Pops. The creamy ones have mix-ins such as fruit, cookies and Fruity Pebbles. Our most popular paleta of this kind is Cookies & Cream. The non-dairy, vegan pops are mainly water, fruit and some added sugar. Our “sell out” fruit flavor is Strawberry Kiwi.

What is your educational background? Is it in entrepreneurship? Have you always wanted to start your own business?

I have a finance degree from Oklahoma State University, but if I remember anything from it, it’s probably all in my subconscious. I've always had a drive for entrepreneurship, starting and stopping multiple businesses since I was young, with the goal of finding something that is ful-

filling and makes me happy but also helps pay for our cat’s expensive food.

What is unique about your product?

I think our tricycle is the most unique thing about our business. It’s inviting, pleasant to have around, and great to have in photos at events. At least I like to think so...

What has been the most fun part of running your business?

We’ve loved being part of large community events. The energy is always great and people

Business of the Month
Toto Pops' service set-up

Toto Pops joy

have been so supportive. We've connected with a lot of extremely nice people behind the scenes who are responsible for city events, bridal shows, event planning, schools, etc. and it’s made doing this a lot more enjoyable. We even chat often with similar "trike catering" businesses around the world on Instagram to share ideas.

What are your plans for the future of your business?

This venture is still young, but we're about to get into doing a lot of weddings and fundraisers on top of the city events. At some point we might get another cart and offer other options depending on the occasion: coffee, ice cream cookie sandwiches, s'mores and more. Ultimately, it'd be great to turn this from a side business into a full-time one.

Tell us about your family. How long have y’all lived in Canyon Creek?

My lovely wife is Danielle and we have two daughters, Reagan (5) and Logan (3). Reagan goes to Aldridge Elementary and Logan goes to Primrose on Lookout. We have been so happy with the schools and

the neighborhood. We sold our previous home before the pandemic, spent two years house-hunting while living with Mom and Grandma (two of the best years of our lives) before we got extremely lucky and ended up where we are now. This was our dream neighborhood after driving through and

seeing all the wildflowers in Prairie Creek Park years ago. We feel safe and loved here; it’s a great community.

THE LUGNUTS

Who are the Lugnuts?

The Lugnuts are a team of 6th grade basketball players at Prairie Creek Elementary. The co-coaches of the team are Cory Whitaker and Mike Obert. The boys have played together since they were in kindergarten…not just with the basketball team, but with the entire 6th grade boys class at Prairie Creek.

The Lugnuts are all buddies and get along great. They look out of each other and truly care about each other. For basketball, they each know where they fit in on the team. We have a wide range of skills, but everyone is always helping their teammates and cheering them on.

The Lugnuts finally won their first title this year in 6th grade. They were both regular season and tournament champions. Our boys have worn the Lugnut jersey with pride in soccer, baseball and basketball. They are currently playing their last soccer season together in the YMCA, where they have won regular season championships.

Recently coaches Whitaker and Obert asked the team to reflect on their time together by asking them a series of questions. These are the boys’ responses:

What makes the Lugnuts special?

Rook: Playing basketball with my friends has always been special to me because we have fun times at practices and games.

Hudson: We played together for our whole life and have so much fun together.

Nathan: We’ve been doing it forever and you get to play on a team with your closest friends.

Robert: It’s all our friends on one team and we get to hang out and have fun together.

Why do you love playing basketball?

Rook: I love playing basketball because it helps me with teamwork skills and other skills.

Hudson: Because it is fun to play together with your friends. For basketball specifically, it is such a satisfying feeling to see the ball swish through the net.

Nathan: Because it’s a team game with a lot of teamwork.

Robert: It’s fun, I like the competition, and it’s a team sport.

Other than winning championships, what's your favorite or unforgettable Lugnut story?

Rook: My favorite story is from first grade when we scored so much that the scorekeepers had to start writing the score on paper instead of the board. Also, the other team only got 4 points and half of it was because the ref helped them score.

Cade: Because we don't have to try at practices…practices were always fun because you were with all your friends and you didn't have to worry about anything. It was just fun every time.

Hudson: Making a three in the championship to make my friends happy. Also, when Cade brought a baby doll to practice and we ripped off its head and used it as a ball shooting it in the goal.

Nathan: End of year practices with the dads.

They competed with passion and a will to win, but more importantly with unabashed joy to play for each other as friends and teammmates. In the game of life, they can always know to just 'Go Nuts'!"

Coach Mike: "So much fun to watch these boys grow not just in basketball but their bonds and friendships. The Lugnuts have something special that we hope they will remember for a lifetime! Lugnuts For Life!"

As the owner of Blooming Vistas, I meet lots of wonderful families in our community, and I am excited to introduce you to Brad and Misty Westveld. Their home is a statement piece in our neighborhood and today you get to know more about their story. It was an absolute joy to work with them and help bring their vision to life. Every interaction with the Westvelds has been a dream and they are the goodness that makes up our beloved Canyon Creek!

Landscape Design and Installation

Meet Brad, Misty, Carys and JD. They are longtime residents of Prairie Creek, and now Canyon Creek with their recent move and new build of 508 Canyon Creek in 2020. 20+ year members of Canyon Creek Country Club, their new home was a chance to enjoy the golf course views, interact with the consistent flow of golfers rolling through hole 13, and they didn’t fully know it at the time, but see the diverse wildlife that walks the course daily. When it comes to landscaping, their vision was adding a pop of color in the forefront of their modern farmhouse look. The vision was manicured, but with plants that we know and love – hydrangeas, roses, yuccas, boxwoods, junipers, and others. Nothing too out of the ordinary, but full and lush. Call it a garden…which was one of Brad’s father’s favorite things. Maybe even a little sentimental memories is what they were seeking. Bringing that vision to life is where

Blooming Vistas came in. They didn’t know all the plants, and didn’t know if the soil, climate, or even the placements of the foliage would work….but that is where Noemi and her team flourished. Through simple discussions with the Westvelds and Blooming Vistas’ knowledge, the Westvelds’ ‘garden’ vision has come to pass. Lastly and maybe more importantly, plant selections are fun, but maintaining in this ever-changing Texas climate is tough… Blooming Vistas’ coaching and extensive horticultural knowledge, quarterly maintenance, procuring the best seasonal color, wise watering adjustments, and even freeze protection in the winter months was also what we needed for our family and our busy travel schedules. Our hope is that our pride in the neighborhood and the care we give our home, only inspires those around us to enjoy and do the same, making Canyon Creek a truly special place to call home.

The Canyon Creek Chronicle

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Echoes From The Canyon SPRING! 2024

We had a nice turnout at your Canyon Creek HOA’s Annual Coffee with the City Council. Our Mayor and Local Legend Bob Dubey and our City Council fielded questions and reflected their vision for our fair City as well as addressing issues more locally pertinent to our specific neighborhood. It can be noted that this year’s gathering had a more relaxed, affable and accessible feel to it. Perhaps we will again avail ourselves of the hospitality of First United Methodist Church Richardson.

Many of you have noticed the construction at the southeast corner of Collins and Fall Creek and have been pleased to see a large flagpole erected on site. Ladies and Gentlemen, Citizens of Canyon Creek, the time is nigh! On May 4th at 11:00 AM, please join us on location for the dedication of the Jay Dalehite Park!

Please mark it on your calendars. We will have more information to follow in the next few weeks. This will be an event not to be missed to honor a man who has devoted much of his life to our special neighborhood!

Thank you for what each of you brings to our singular neighborhood. It wouldn’t be the same without you! Following Jay’s example, we can all make a difference!

I hope something good happens to you today.

Begonia Sale 2024 a Huge Success!

Each year our CCHOA hosts a Begonia Sale with the express purposes of beautifying the neighborhood, activating our volunteer network, and creating a sense of community and camaraderie.

The weekend was a smashing success! Sales of begonias, vincas/periwinkles, geraniums and ferns reached almost $7,000, besting 2023 sales by over $1,200. Each year, the crowds line up before the announced start time to get the very best of the best plants. We are so grateful that the weather turned out to be perfect, except for the 47-degree temperature at 7:30 a.m. Friday morning when we were getting set up.

Thanks so much to all the volunteers that came out to help. There were too many to name here, but Jay and Sandy Dalehite worked the sale almost the entire time. The CCHOA Board appreciates their continued dedication to Canyon Creek! The plants are already sprinkling the neighborhood with beautiful color. We thank you for putting in the work to make our neighborhood such a pretty place to call home.

Homeowners Insurance

True Story

FACTS

• A new Homeowner policy for a customer was written and set the payor as "mortgagee bill."

• The policy was issued, but the bill could not be delivered to the mortgagee due to incorrect info provided by customer.

• Because the bill could not be delivered, the payment was not made and the policy was cancelled for non-payment.

• The customer overlooked the notice of cancellation they received since insurance is part of their monthly house payment.

• Two months after the policy was cancelled for non-payment, the customer filed a claim because their garage was destroyed by fire.

• The customer learned that their policy was not in force but was adamant that they had provided the name and address of the mortgage.

THE FINDINGS

As the claim was reviewed, it was identified via a call recording that the customer had indeed provided the incorrect mortgage information.

THE OUTCOME

Claim was denied.

LESSON LEARNED

If a mortgagee needs to be listed on a policy, ensure that the correct information was

entered by the agent and that the correct information is on the application. Even if you are lucky and do not have a claim, the mortgage company will find out you do not have coverage and force place coverage that is very expensive. Force placed insurance also only covers the mortgage company's interest; your belongings will not be covered. Follow up with your insurance company to make sure the mortgage was paid and always open mail from your insurance company.
