Happy beginning of fall, everyone! I hope your summer has been filled with opportunities to make memories…maybe through travel or learning to play Mahjong with new friends or simply having a chat with a neighbor in the front yard. I often feel so lucky to know so many amazing and interesting folks in Canyon Creek, first through co-owning Sweet Firefly and now by sharing your stories here.
My husband Trey and I discovered the neighborhood because a Canyon Creek resident, Erica Yaeger, used to make and sell the most amazing baby blankets, one of which we received at a baby shower for our newborn son. I knew I had to make these monogrammed, perfect-for-swaddling treasures my go-to gift for my friends’ babies. At the time we were living in Addison but looking for a neighborhood with swings and slides, trees and sidewalks. Who knew that there was a neighborhood tucked away in Richardson that fit the bill?
It took us three years to get here, but I’m so glad we did. And people keep finding our hidden gem. Entrepreneur Abby Lane chose II Creeks as the location for Chérie Lane, our business of the month and her flagship storefront boutique, which opened last month. Julie and Mike Hughes, our spotlighted family in this issue, fell in love in England and found their way to their beloved Sage Valley home two decades ago.
Georgia Nelson walks Murphy, her precious bordoodle, down High Brook and Canyon Brook daily and always stops to greet her neighbors. You’ll meet Georgia and Murphy in these pages. And Pearce senior Will Miltenberger, whom I had the privilege of watching grow up through his frequent visits to Sweet Firefly with his family, is our student athlete of the month. What a wonderful young man he has turned out to be.
One of the best ways to meet your neighbors is at our National Night Out celebrations happening this year in October. We’ve asked Sharon Odell, our CCHOA Crime Watch Director since 2021, to share her story and to let you know all about the upcoming NNO activities.
I just know there’s someone out there reading this letter who would love to be featured in the magazine. Don’t be shy about reaching out and letting us know! We want to meet you and look forward to sharing your unique story.

For many successful couples in their 40s, 50s, and even early 60s, life is full— careers are thriving, kids are (mostly) grown, and retirement feels like it’s on the horizon but not quite urgent. With everything seemingly under control, it’s easy to say, “We’ll deal with our finances later.” But when it comes to wealth management, waiting can be one of the most costly decisions of all.
Financial planning isn’t just about spreadsheets and projections—it’s about timing. And time, as any investor knows, is either your greatest ally or your most expensive missed opportunity.
Take tax planning, for example. High earners may miss years of potencially valuable opportunities like strategic Roth conversions, charitable giving strategies, or
capital gain harvesting simply because they didn’t explore these options early enough. After retirement, some opportunities for taxefficient strategies may become more limited over time.
Estate planning is another area where delay can backfire. Families often avoid these conversations because they seem uncomfortable or “not urgent.” But lack of clarity around wills, trusts, and beneficiary designations can create confusion—or conflict—down the road. Updating these documents regularly, especially during midlife transitions, may help protect not only your assets but your relationships. Even investment portfolios deserve a second look. Is your portfolio aligned with your current stage of life, or is it still designed
for your 35-year-old self? As you approach retirement, your risk exposure, income needs, and cash flow planning should reflect your updated goals.
The truth is, most couples we work with aren’t behind—they’re just at a crossroads. They’ve built something meaningful, but haven’t yet optimized or protected it. That’s where planning adds real value—not just in potential growth, but in clarity and confidence.
So if you’ve been meaning to “get around to it,” consider this your gentle nudge. A quick planning conversation today could save could help save you from costly surprises in the years ahead.
Ready to make sure your plan is working as hard as you are? Let’s talk.

Back in 1991, a chance encounter at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England, set the stage for a lifelong adventure. Julie, a young English literature student, met Mike, who was
studying computer science and French. It didn’t take long before the two fell in love. Mike’s enthusiasm for the French language positively influenced Julie so much that she later became a French teacher.
Their love story came full circle when Mike and Julie tied the knot in Mike’s hometown of Malmesbury, England. Fast forward three decades and the couple recently returned to Brighton, the city where it all began, to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary.
Though they started their married life in England, Mike fell in love with the skies and open landscapes of the Lone Star State. So, not long after marrying, they packed their bags and settled in Denton, Texas. Seven years later, they moved to Canyon Creek, knowing it would be the perfect neighborhood to raise their future family.
That bet paid off. Their home on Sage Valley became the backdrop for countless family memories and raising their two children— Olivia, now 24, and Owen, 21.
If you’ve attended the Wildflower! Arts & Music Festival or stopped by Guitars & Growlers over the years, you may have caught a performance by Olivia Hughes. With her close friend Sam Wood, Olivia sang all through high school and college, sharing her love of music with the community.
At school, the Hughes kids carved their own unique paths. Olivia attended Canyon Creek Elementary, then pursued art through Richardson’s magnet program, eventually earning a Fine Art degree from USC. Today, she’s building a career in animation—already working on two music videos and contributing to Apple TV’s Shape Island. Most recently, she created a whimsical photo op installation for the 2024 Wildflower! Festival.
Meanwhile, Owen’s journey took him in another direction. A talented musician in the JJ Pearce Mighty Mustang Band, he eventually followed his interest in communication and numbers. Now in his third year at UT Austin, Owen is majoring in advertising and minoring in statistics and data science.
The Hughes household isn’t complete without their pets. Bennie, a long-haired German Shepherd who found his forever home with them after two rehomings, may be eight years old but still acts like a big baby. Then there’s Harry Styles—the hound dog, not the pop star—who joined the family as a puppy and has been Bennie’s partner-in-crime ever since. But make no mistake: the real boss is
Lupe, their sociable 10-year-old cat who keeps everyone in line.
With the kids grown, family time looks a little different these days, but traditions remain strong. Whether it’s storytelling around a campfire, a lively game night, or planning trips centered on music festivals, the Hughes family always finds a way to connect. One of their favorite adventures was road-tripping to Montana for the Decemberists’ Traveling Rest Festival, with a detour to Yellowstone.
By day, Mike is VP of Marketing for a Romanian FinTech company, while Julie manages an interior design office in Dallas. Beyond their careers, both are deeply woven into the Richardson arts scene. They serve on the Executive Steering Committee for the Wildflower! Arts and Music Festival, helping produce the Budding Talent Vocal
Competition each year. Julie also lends her talents to the Richardson Symphony Orchestra’s Beaujolais Bash fundraiser, while Mike dedicated years as Scoutmaster for Troop 895. Together, they host block parties, organize National Night Out, and jump at any chance to build community through music and connection.
Outside of work and volunteering, Mike can often be found at White Rock Lake, sailing with the Corinthian Sailing Club. While his official title is board member, his unofficial goal is much simpler: win a Sunday race. Julie, on the other hand, thrives on the little joys of life—reading advice columns and poetry, roller skating to disco, cooking for her family, and laughing with friends over trivia nights.
In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, the Hughes family is proof that love, creativity, closeness and community still matter.
“I met Gary Carley in 1976 when I was 12 years old as he called on our family-owned business. Gary made me my first loan to buy a car in 1979. The loan was for $1,100.00. Now decades later he has been the banker for four generations of the Hauk family. The loan volume over the years has increased substantially to millions of dollars. I still love the relationship with Gary and Texas Republic Bank and I would not change."
Hi my name is Abby Lane and I am the owner of Chérie Lane. Chérie Lane is a fashion-forward boutique built on the belief that every woman deserves to feel confident, beautiful, and unforgettable in every setting she walks into. Founded in 2022 as a college project at Baylor University, Chérie Lane has grown into a thriving e-commerce brand \nd now a flagship storefront in Richardson, Texas.
Tell us about yourself and Chérie Lane. Hi! My name is Abby Lane and I am the owner of Chérie Lane, a fashion-forward boutique built on the belief that every woman deserves to feel confident, beautiful and unforgettable in every setting. Our signature style is classy, chic, and sparkly— curated for tenacious and driven women who love to make a statement. From bold game day collections and luxe denim to timeless
seasonal capsules, Chérie Lane is more than just a boutique; it’s a community where fashion and empowerment go hand in hand.
How did you come up with the name Chérie Lane and how is the name pronounced?
The name came from my sorority’s little sister, meaning “sweetheart” in French. It’s pronounced “shuh-REE lane.”
Why II Creeks?
We chose II Creeks because it truly reflects the heart of our brand. Richardson is a vibrant, growing community filled with families, professionals and students who value both style and connection—exactly the kind of women we love to serve.
II Creeks offered the perfect balance of visibility, charm and community feel, giving us a space where our boutique could
be not just a store, but a destination. From the walkable center and unique mix of businesses to the supportive spirit of local residents, it felt like the right place to bring our vision to life. More than just a storefront, we wanted a location where we could create an experience—a space for styling, events, and building relationships—and Richardson offered that in every way.
Can you tell us about your background and how you chose this profession? And have you always seen yourself as an entrepreneur?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I actually started my first business when I was seven years old: making jewelry, building a little website, and even creating order forms and business cards. That early passion for creating and selling never really left me. Fast forward to college at Baylor University where I launched Chérie Lane as part of a school project, knowing I wanted to take advantage of every resource available before stepping into “adult life.” What began as a simple class assignment quickly turned into something much bigger—a true calling that I couldn’t ignore.
After graduation, I worked in corporate supply chain, but I always felt pulled back toward entrepreneurship. The turning point
came when I realized that building Chérie Lane full-time was not only possible but necessary if I wanted to fully pursue my dreams. I left my corporate career in August 2024. Since then, I’ve poured my heart into growing Chérie Lane.
What do you like about being in the clothing business?
I love the ability to impact women’s confidence and self-expression. Fashion is so much more than just clothes—it’s about how you feel when you walk into a room. Seeing a woman light up when she puts on a piece that makes her feel beautiful, powerful, or sparkly is incredibly rewarding.
I also love the creative side—curating collections, spotting trends, and bringing in pieces that you won’t find everywhere else. But what makes this business truly special is the connection. We are often entrusted with life’s most personal moments—we usually hear about the celebrations before anyone else, whether it’s a wedding, graduation, or big promotion.
At the same time, we’re also here to dress women through life’s lowest moments, when style and presentation mean more than words can express. We see it all and it’s an honor to walk alongside our customers in every season. That blend of creativity, empowerment, and
deep human connection is what makes this industry so meaningful to me.
Anything else you would like us to know about you or about Chérie Lane? Personally, I want women to see my story as a reminder that age, fear, or doubt should never hold you back—if you have a vision and the courage to pursue it, you can make it happen. Come see us and let us style you “the Chérie Lane way”—with intentionality, hospitality, and a touch of sparkle.

Your patio is more than a place to sit—it can be an extension of your home’s living and entertaining areas. With the right upgrades, you can create a space that blends style, comfort, and functionality, while adding long-term value to your property. Here are some remodeling ideas to give your patio a whole new life.
1
. Build an Outdoor Kitchen
An outdoor kitchen takes entertaining to the next level. Install a built-in grill, countertop prep space, storage cabinets, and even a sink or refrigerator. Add a bar counter with stools so guests can relax while you cook. Durable materials like stainless steel, stone, and tile keep it looking great for years.
2
. Add a Fireplace or Fire Pit
A fireplace can become the focal point of your patio, creating warmth and ambiance for year-round enjoyment. For a more casual setup, consider a built-in stone fire pit with surrounding seating. Both options make cooler evenings more inviting and add a cozy charm to the space.
3
. Incorporate a Pergola or Covered Structure
Adding a pergola, pavilion, or full roof cover extends your use of the patio in hot or rainy weather. Pair it with retractable shades or ceiling fans to improve comfort. If you love to entertain, you can also integrate built-in lighting and speakers into the structure.
4
. Upgrade the Flooring
Replace standard concrete with natural stone, brick pavers, stamped concrete, or composite decking. These options not only elevate the look of your patio but also improve durability and slip resistance. Heated flooring systems can even extend your outdoor season in cooler climates.
5
. Create Multi-Zone Layouts
Think beyond a single seating area. Divide your patio into zones—a dining space, a lounge area, and a cooking station—to make it more functional. Use planters, low walls, or changes in flooring texture to subtly define each section.
6
. Install Outdoor Heating or Cooling Features
Ceiling fans, misting systems, and infrared heaters can make your patio comfortable in almost any weather. These features can be built into overhead structures for a sleek, integrated look.
7
. Enhance with Landscaping
Tie your patio into the rest of your yard with custom landscaping. Built-in planters, raised garden beds, and decorative retaining walls create a seamless transition between hardscape and greenery.
With these remodeling upgrades, your patio can go from simple to spectacular—offering a versatile, year-round outdoor living space that’s perfect for both relaxing and entertaining. You are bringing the outside in and extending your living space!

Tell us your name, school you’re attending, and grade.
My name is Will Miltenberger and I am a senior at Pearce High School.
Tell us about yourself.
My hobbies are playing sports and spending time with friends and family. I like to spend my time out of school watching college football (when in season), spending time outside, hunting, fishing, and being active in any way.
Brag on yourself: tell us your honors and awards in and out of school.
I am going into my 3rd season starting on the varsity football team at Pearce and my 2nd year as a captain. I have been awarded alldistrict recognition the past two years and was awarded sophomore player of the year my first year as a varsity player. I am an A and B student in school and have always prided myself on working extremely hard at everything I do.
What are three adjectives that describe you?
Honest, determined, motivated
You played multiple sports when you were younger. What made you decide to commit 100% to football?
The brotherhood and bonds I have created through football are very special to me. I’ve always felt at home playing football, especially at a young age. Finding success at something I love was a great feeling. I committed 100% to football when I met Coach Lambert (head football coach at Pearce). He explained to me that I can do special things within the program and that I am a special leader; I have trusted him ever since.
Tell us about your family.
I have two sisters, both at Pearce. Miley is a sophomore and Gracey is a freshman. I have two dogs, Marshall (golden retriever) and Luka (cocker spaniel), and my two parents, Jennifer and Ted Miltenberger. We have lived here for 17 years.
What do you love most about living in Canyon Creek? Any favorite memories?
I love the community and people in Canyon Creek, whether it be going up to the country club or driving around. Everyone is friendly and kind. I remember when it snowed in 2022 and everyone came together to go sledding, pass out hot chocolate, and just enjoy a special time with the community, something I will never forget.
If you had a day to yourself with no responsibilities and no schoolwork, what would you do?
I would start with a morning hunt with my good friend Lucas Thomas (lives in Canyon Creek) and then relaxing for a bit. I’d have a good Shadys lunch, then enjoy a round of golf at Canyon Creek Country Club and end the day with Dos Arroyos enchiladas for dinner.
Tell us your name and the name of your pet(s). What type of pet is he/she?
I’m Georgia Nelson and my dog’s name is Murphy. He is a border collie/poodle (bordoodle).
How did Murphy become a member of your family?
I used to dog sit for people in the neighborhood who had gotten him as a rescue from Doodle Dandy. One time I sat for two weeks with Murphy while his owner was in Seattle. When she came home, she told me she was going to return Murphy to Doodle Dandy. I asked her not to because Murphy and I had bonded and we were friends, so she offered him to me. Naturally I stepped up and took him!
Tell us more about Murphy.
I’ve had dogs all my life, but never this lovable and sweet. Murphy just wants to be loved. We found out he was roaming the
streets of Dallas when Doodle Dandy picked him up and found a home for him. He’s my buddy and is settled into my routine. I’m so grateful to have him as he’s a wonderful companion. We’ve been together 6 years and I don’t know what I would do without him.
Tell us about your family. How long have you lived in Canyon Creek?
I’ve lived in Canyon Creek for 48 years and that is a record for me. When I was growing up, we would move every 3 years. I went to 3 elementary schools, 3 high schools, and 3 colleges. I have two grown daughters who live in the area. Lynn lives in Rockwall and is the CFO of Chiloso Bistro Restaurants. She has 3 boys who have all graduated from college and are working in the area.
Kristen lives in Allen and is an executive assistant to the HR officer of a large worldwide construction company. She has a married son and my granddaughter will soon be 24. I’m proud of my family for sure.
I worked for Safeco Insurance Company for 30 years before retiring. My hubby, Bob, passed away in 2017. We would have been married 61 years this year.
What are your involvements either in Canyon Creek, through your church, or within the community?
I’m a member of the Richardson Woman’s Club and have held several different positions over the years. I’m also a member of First United Methodist Church Richardson and play Bridge in several area groups.
What do you love most about living in Canyon Creek?
What I love about living in Canyon Creek is the people. We are all like family on our block. If you are in need, just let a neighbor know and your prayers will be answered. I broke both my shoulders a few years ago and everyone has been so helpful in things I have do to around the house.

CCHOA Crime Watch Director
I’m Sharon Odell, your CCHOA Crime Watch Director. Since I assumed that role, I have tried to encourage a sense of community among our residents by increasing the number of active block captains who host parties for Richardson’s annual National Night Out program. Canyon Creek is Richardson’s largest neighborhood, and my goal is to keep it safe, vibrant, and close-knit.
My husband Jack and I moved to Canyon Creek in 1971 while looking for a home to buy for our growing family. At that time, he was a pilot for Braniff Airlines flying
out of Love Field, but DFW was under construction, so he decided Richardson was as far north and as far east as he was willing to travel for work!
Ours is a family of boys! I have two adult sons, Jay and Chris, who grew up in Canyon Creek and attended Plano schools from Aldridge Elementary through Plano Senior High. After they graduated from college, Chris moved back to Dallas. Jay’s career took him to Charleston, SC, where he, his wife Kristen, and two sons, JJ and Dylan, have lived for more than 20 years. Dylan is in his second year at Medical University
of South Carolina. JJ has lived in Houston since he attended college there. He is getting married next year and I am very excited to have his lovely bride as my granddaughter!
I have enjoyed living in this vibrant, family-friendly community for more than 50 years. I especially appreciate Canyon Creek’s blend of older residents and younger households, which I find promotes a sense of unity within individual neighborhoods as well as fosters support for neighborhood activities such as our July 4th parade and National Night Out parties. And who doesn’t love our beautiful parks that provide opportunities for families to gather and children to play and enjoy sports activities!
Since December 2021, three other volunteers and I from FUMCR plan, shop, cook, and serve a hot nutritious lunch to low-income seniors each month at Network of Community Ministries Seniors’ Net. We are thrilled that in only three years, our “guest list” has grown from 25 to 100 seniors on “second Thursday lunch day!”
Since 2020, I have chaired a Richardson Woman’s Club altruistic committee that benefits those in need in Richardson. A favorite activity is the annual shoe drive for the RISD Council of PTAs Clothes Closet that is funded by RWC members to help students get proper school footwear. Since 2016, RWC volunteers have shopped for and donated more than 1,430 pairs of new shoes to the Clothes Closet.
Additionally, RWC has partnered with Network’s Seniors’ Net since 2024 to fund, pack, and distribute to low-income seniors more than 400 “Christmas in July” bags filled with 20 essential items not covered by SNAP. The success of this partnership led to additional volunteer opportunities, which include packing food sacks for Network’s Big Meals for Little Kids Summer Feeding Program for children who qualify for the free lunch program at school and assembling emergency food packs for underserved seniors. RWC volunteers also packed and distributed Holiday Dinner bags, assembled Santa stockings, and assisted parents at Toyland.
One of my most treasured moments occurred at the 2023 CCHOA’s volunteer dinner when I received a City of Richardson 150th Anniversary Challenge Coin from RPD Chief Gary Tittle for my service as a Canyon Creek Block Captain and Crime Watch Director.
National Night Out is celebrating its 36th year in Richardson!
The City of Richardson and the Canyon Creek Homeowners Association invite residents to participate in block parties or similar gatherings on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. These events aim to increase connections among neighbors and strengthen police-community relations by engaging with First Responders. As RPD Chief Gary Tittle stated in Richardson’s 2025 National Night Out preview video, "We are strongest when we stand together."
No official theme has been designated for this year’s National Night Out, but residents of Canyon Creek are encouraged to display blue bows on trees as a demonstration of support.
Canyon Creek is proud to host more block parties in Richardson than any other area. In 2024, for instance, 38 out of the city's 114 registered block parties took place in Canyon Creek. If you are
interested in becoming a Canyon Creek Block Captain and hosting a party, please contact Sharon Odell at sharon@the-odells.com.
Block Captains have until September 19, 2025, to register their National Night Out events at richardsonpolice.net/services/community-engagement/national-night-out/nno-block-party-registration. For National Night Out 2025 questions, contact RPD Officer David Beregszaszy at (972) 744-4938.
As always, residents are encouraged to donate canned goods to the Network of Community Ministries’ food pantry during neighborhood events. Collected canned foods will be picked up by Richardson police officers, firefighters, paramedics and city government officials who will visit registered gatherings.
Let’s celebrate this special evening that ties our Canyon Creek community together on Tuesday, October 7th by visiting with neighbors, meeting First Responders, and extending a helping hand to those in need.

Scammers have been known to pose as insurance agents selling cheap, fraudulent policies to consumers who think they're obtaining legitimate coverage from a licensed insurer. Victims may not discover they've been scammed until they file a claim — only to be told that their policy is not in force with the company.
Doing business with these false insurance agents, sometimes called "ghost brokers," could put you, your family and your finances at risk.
Consider the following to help avoid becoming a victim of this type of insurance
fraud. Ghost brokers may apply for a genuine policy in your name, keep your premium payments, then cancel the policy shortly after — all without your knowledge. This practice allows the fraudsters to deceive unsuspecting "customers" into thinking they have a legitimate policy. The victim may only find out that the policy was canceled after they have to make an insurance claim.
Ghost brokers typically advertise cheap insurance on social media sites or messaging apps. In fact, insurance fraudsters typically tout policies that are much cheaper than competitors' policies, according to
the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. If a so-called agent's insurance rate seems too good to be true, it probably is.
These watch-outs may help you spot a fraudulent insurance agent. Be wary of:
• Agents who advertise cheap insurance on social media sites or messaging apps.
• Agents who communicate solely via social media or email. The NAIC says fraudsters may not list a phone number or may be difficult to reach via phone.
• Agents who ask for cash-only payments in person, through social media or via cash-transfer mobile apps, according to PropertyCasualty360.
• Agents who promise to secure an insur ance policy for you without providing any direct communication or docu ments from the insurance carrier.
• Don't sign any paperwork until you've checked that the agent is licensed.
• Be wary of agents who demand cash-only payment. Don't make any payments until you've confirmed the agent's license.
