Pet of the Month

Cherry the Chinchilla Tell us your name, a little bit about your family, and the name(s) of your pet(s). My name is Annie Fisherman. I am a ninth grader at Fairhill. I have a brother, Piper, who is a sophomore at Hendrix College in Arkansas. My mom is a photographer and my bonus dad is an English professor at Dallas College. My dad also lives in Canyon Creek and is a corporate lawyer at a telecommunications company. What type of animals do you have? I have a chinchilla named Cherry and four dogs: three at my mom’s (Pix, Jenny and Sadie) and Kobe at my dad’s. I also have a chicken named PoPo. Tell us more about Cherry. I got Cherry from this lady who owns chinchillas. I have had her for a year now, which makes her six because she was five when I got her. I named her after this character from the game Cookie Run Kingdom. The character’s name is Cherry Cookie and she says “Cherry Bomb” a lot. So I like to call her “Cherry Bomb.” Plus, she is a big, fluffy chinchilla. She is also gray and I sometimes call her a little bowling ball. What is involved in caring for a chinchilla? I have to clean her cage every weekend and, of course, make sure she always has clean water to drink and food to eat. Does Cherry have fun tricks, unique talents, a quirky personality? Cherry is a very sassy chinchilla, very moody. She loves to play on her big wheel—often at night because she is a nocturnal animal. She is very fast on that wheel and in general. She likes to cuddle, too. I sometimes put a little strawberry costume on her that my dad got for her. How long have you lived in Canyon Creek and what do you love most about it? I have lived in Canyon Creek my whole life. I love that I have a best friend four doors down from me and that we’ve grown up together. Plus, I know most people in my neighborhood and everyone is nice. 4

Please share with us a funny or awesome story of living in the neighborhood. I have my best friend just down the street from me. I get to see her almost every day and it is amazing! A funny thing…she even named our chicken PoPo! www.CanyonCreekLife.com

Is there anything else you would love for your neighbors to know about you or your pets? If anyone sees a crazy gremlin-looking dog running around the neighborhood, that’s Pix, our family dog.

The Sauvage/Villalon Family An International Addition to Canyon Creek! By Patti Otte

T

ypically, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. But for Ludovic “Ludo” Sauvage and Ada Villalon, Vegas meant meeting, falling in love, marrying and ultimately creating the perfect, boisterous, joy-filled home for the couple and their six children right here in Canyon Creek. Says Ludo, “We’re a large, noisy family who likes to spend time together, cooking together, partying and chilling together!” The path to this happy ending was a long and winding one. Ludo is originally from the 6

French Alps, but a one-year internship brought him to America more than 25 years ago. Ada grew up in Monterey, Mexico, and moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, to complete a master’s degree in engineering at NC State. She had moved back to Monterey and eventually joined the same company as Ludo. Years later, the two found themselves assigned to the same project in Vegas and started dating. Ludo and Ada have a blended family with six wonderfull kids. Quentin, the oldest, is 21 and recently transferred to ASU from OU to www.CanyonCreekLife.com

complete his dual degree in Business Administration and Computer Science. Eighteen-yearold triplets Madeleine (Madi), Alexandra (Lexi) and Lucas are now freshmen at Texas A&M University. The couple’s youngest are Chloe and Julien. Chloe is a third grader at Canyon Creek Elementary and Julien attends a bilingual program at Richardson Heights Elementary. This family loves to cook! When they moved into their Canyon Creek home, Charles Westfall, a local builder and their neighbor, helped them transform an existing

home into one that would perfectly fit their large family. The kitchen is the heart of it all, a place where they like to gather and cook together. From pozole to mole and ceviche to cheese fondue (the real one!), they enjoy making their favorite French and Mexican dishes. But, says Ada, “We are also pretty adventurous and do not hesitate to try new things from any culture, even though sometimes the results can be quite ‘surprising’.” Because they love to spend time outdoors, they expanded the home’s outdoor area. They built an authentic Argentinian Asador, a unique grill traditionally designed for the asado BBQ method, which Ada decorated with Talavera tiles. In pure Argentinian tradition, the grill stays on for hours, which results in memorable tomahawk or picanha steaks. The Sauvage/Villalon clan also prioritizes travel. Hiking is always on the itinerary, regardless of the destination. Daughter Lexi likes to say, “No matter where we go, it’s not a vacation unless we go on one of Dad’s hikes.” Ludo responds: “Everyone complains, but eventually everyone loves it, especially when we get to cross some beautiful countryside or reach the top of some Alpine mountains.”

Climbing in Machu Pichu, Peru

A favorite family moment was spent during an extended stay in France in 2018, during which they found themselves in Paris for the World Cup final. The couple reflects: “The ambience was insane and we got to watch it together in the middle of Paris and celebrate with the locals. The entire city erupted and everyone was dancing in the streets. Walking the Champs-Elysees that night was quite an experience and unforgettable.” And while the couple loves their family time, they also spend time traveling the world sans kids. Ludo recalls one particularly memorable trip: “We have had a few remarkable experiences over the years. One that comes to mind was during a trip to Peru. We decided to hike the Inca trail in the Cordillera de los Andes for several days, camping on top of mountains, only to descend to Machu Pichu from the Sun gate on Ada’s birthday…so much beauty and so many archeological sites that can only be seen from the trail.” On a day-to-day basis, Ludo and Ada both work for technology companies. Ludo leads the Advanced Computing division of Eviden

Americas, a global leader in high-performance computing, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence technology. Says Ludo, “This is a very exciting business to be in, as these systems touch every aspect of life, from weather forecasting

In their free time, Ludo, Ada and Chloe practice Martial Arts at Sun Lee Taekwondo. Both Ludo and daughter Chloe earned their black belts last November. Ada is catching up and will earn hers later this year. States the couple, “This is actually a great activity for us to practice as a family, even though sparring with one another is not the best couples therapy. We are particularly grateful to Master Jason Lee and Master Sharjeel, who are making sure we are staying in shape and teaching important life lessons to our kids.” At the age of eight, Chloe has already participated in several tournaments, including the US Open Taekwondo Hanmadang, a national tournament held in Colorado Springs,

CO. Her parents were thrilled to see her progress and grow in self-confidence as she piled up the medals, which they believe are a direct result of Master Lee’s teachings. Ludo and Ada and their extended family have created a wonderful home and springboard for life’s adventures. When asked about living in the neighborhood, the couple replies, “While we may not be the typical family found in Canyon Creek (maybe because we have a different background, or we talk with an accent), at the end, like most people here, we love our neighborhood and everything it has to offer. It is a great place to raise a family and our kids have made great friends. The schools are fantastic and we love our teachers. No matter how far we travel or how long we are gone, we love coming back home, strolling down our streets and enjoying a nice walk…a one that often ends up at Sweet Firefly, our favorite ice cream place where we let Angie treat us with the latest flavor du jour.” So glad they are in our midst.

Mother-In-Law Suites

Multi-Generational Living Trends

By Lisa Parellli-Monaghan

A

s the population ages and healthcare/ senior living costs continue to rise, homeowners are looking for ways to care for loved ones without breaking the bank, while simultaneously giving their loved ones privacy and a continued independent lifestyle. According to USA Today, 51 million Americans live in multigenerational households, a number that will likely continue to rise as more generations live under one roof. This is also referred to as having a “mother-in-law” style suite. These suites can be created in existing floor plans by extending square footage on a first floor, converting a garage, or even building a separate efficiency apartment. Homeowners are getting creative in ways to keep their family members under the same roof or at least on the same property. Some municipalities are now allowing Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) if they meet the city building codes and ordi10

nances. These different types of units are defined as follow: Interior mother-in-law suite - located within the house where the family resides. It could be in a main portion of the house such as a study, den, or another room. Some homes have floor plans that comfortably accommodate bringing in extended family members. These homes have bedrooms at opposite ends of the house and have connected bathrooms. This type of suite typically shares a living room, dining area, and kitchen space with the entire family. Attached mother-in-law suite - a separate living space built onto an existing home. This is usually done by adding an addition to the side of back of the home. Detached mother-in-law suite - also called accessory dwelling units (ADU). These are typically smaller, separate homes that are www.CanyonCreekLife.com

constructed on the same lot as the family home. These can vary in size, features, and styles to suit personal tastes and needs. They must meet code and building requirements. Garage Suite -a suite where the garage of the home is converted or remodeled to accommodate in-laws or relatives. The remodel typically includes a bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette and living area. The key to tackling this kind of project is planning and research. Projects of this magnitude take months to plan, estimate, select materials and order products. Contractors of quality and integrity are scheduling at least six months out. If a contractor tells you that they can start a larger remodeling project right away, that should be a red flag! If you are considering a large project, do your homework and look for contractors who are Certified Professionals and understand Universal Design and Aging in Place.

Business of the Month

Claire’s Canine Services What is your name and the name of your business? How long have you been in business? My name is Claire Ashby. The name of my business is Claire's Canine Services and I have been in business for three years. Tell us more about your business: what inspired you to do what you do, what do you love about dogs, and do you have any plans to grow your business? My business began because I wanted to walk a dog and my dog is too old and small to go on walks, so I asked my neighbors if I could walk their dogs. One thing led to another and I began getting requests to dog sit as well. I currently do dog walking, dog sitting at people's homes (feed, take out, take for a walk, play and teach tricks) and, depending on the size and temperament (and my mom approves!), I dog sit at my home. I love dogs because they listen to you when you tell them about your day and what is on your mind. They make you feel good and are just good company. They are also cute! And I am always open to taking new clients. What makes your business unique? My business is unique because I don't do it just for the money. I do it because I love dogs and the dogs feel that I love them. They feel my love because, in addition to walking them and taking care of their needs, I play with them and give them love. Tell us a little bit about your family. My family consists of my parents, my brother and me. My brother, Owen, is 17 months older than me and one year above me in school. My parents own a staffing firm, Benchmark Search Group. We have a dog named Coco. She is a 14-year-old teacup Yorkshire terrier. We love sports, traveling, watching movies and playing games. How long have you and your family lived in Canyon Creek? What do you like about living here and having a business here? We have lived in Canyon Creek for nine years. I like that all my friends live here. It 14

just feels like home. I also love how people here want to support me. Whether it is with my dog business or selling Girl Scout cookies, people want to support my hard work. I have clients who are now friends. www.CanyonCreekLife.com

Share with us a funny or awesome story of having a business or living in Canyon Creek. One time when I was sitting a dog named Ryder King, my mom brought him to my

softball game. He could see me out in the field and was trying to get my attention. He barked and whined for me until I came over to love on him. Anything else you’d love for your neighbors to know about your business or you? When I'm not loving on dogs, I ride horses and play club soccer. I am actually saving up for a horse! Most of the money that I make goes straight to my savings account to go towards buying a horse and equipment. Owning and taking care of my future horse will be extra special because I will have paid for it myself! If a new customer wants to reach you for your canine services, how would they do so? I love meeting and taking care of new dogs. If you are interested in my services, you can reach out to my mom, Cayce Ashby. You can find her in the Canyon Creek directory.

Student of the Month

COLEMAN HENKE Tell us your name, what school you currently attend (or recently attended), and what year you are in school. My name is Coleman Henke and I am a Senior at J.J. Pearce High School. What other schools have you attended… grade school, middle school, etc.? Before Pearce I went to Prairie Creek Elementary and Richardson North Junior High. Tell us what got you interested in fishing…how long have you been fishing, who introduced you to the sport, do you fish competitively, etc. I was introduced to fishing at a very young age, maybe around four or five, by my dad. He would take my sister and me to the Prairie Creek waterfall, where we would have fun catching bluegill and catfish. I remember one specific memory of hooking a huge catfish when I was very young, which I ended up losing, but that one time fishing had me hooked for life! As I got older, I would ride my bike to the creek to fish, then graduated to local ponds, then to lakes. Now I’m fishing lakes all around Texas! I currently fish for Pearce High School’s Bass Fishing Team. What do you love about fishing? My favorite thing about fishing is definitely the complexity of the sport. I love

how it is always changing, whether it’s time of year or the direction the wind is blowing on a particular day. I love challenging myself to catch fish in different ways and in different conditions. I love to go fishing regardless of the weather, if I’m alone or with friends…I go no matter what. Bass fishing is my favorite, but I like any kind of fishing…from fly fishing for trout to catching saltwater fish on the coast.

a newer class that Pearce is offering this year. It’s very fun learning about dealing with crime.

Brag on yourself: Tell us your honors and awards in school. At Pearce, I am on the Varsity Swim Team, National Honor Society, JJP Wranglers, and I am involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Tell us about your family, including pets if you have any. How long have y’all lived in Canyon Creek? My family has lived in Canyon Creek for about 16 years now. I have a younger sister, Campbell, who is a sophomore at Pearce, a younger brother named Weston, who is in sixth grade at Prairie Creek Elementary, a dog named Oakley, and two awesome parents, Kim and Ben Henke!

What’s your favorite subject in school? My favorite subject in school right now is definitely Forensic Science. Forensic Science is www.CanyonCreekLife.com

Outside of school and fishing, what do you do for fun, hobbies, work, etc.? Outside of school and fishing, I like to hang out with my friends, go hunting and camping, watch movies, go to church and work. I work at the String Bean Restaurant on Campbell and Mimosa.

What do you love most about living in Canyon Creek? Do you have a fun or awesome story of living in the neighborhood that you can share with us? My favorite part about Canyon Creek is definitely the creek that runs through the neighborhood. It provides the opportunity for kids to hang out in nature and in the outdoors and it is where I started my passion for fishing! My buddies and I would go explore the creek when we were younger and enjoy time outside. I remember back when I was a lot younger, my friends and I found part of a tree hanging over an area of deep water. We decided to jump off the tree into the water and it ended up making for a great place to jump and swim! What are your plans post-graduation from Pearce? Next year I will be attending Tarleton State University to study business. I will be fishing for the Tarleton Bass Club and hopefully traveling the country fishing college tournaments! They are the number one Bass Team in Texas and are in the top 10 in the nation. I am hoping to make a future out of my passion for fishing!

Canyon Creek Allstate Insurance

Auto Insurance Rates Still Increasing In 2023 Auto insurance rates are still on the rise, with many of the top companies experiencing double-digit increases in 2023. Geico and Allstate were exceptions in 2023 but saw double-digit increases in 2022. According to S&P GMI, Farmers led the way with the highest increases, followed by American Family. It's essential for consumers to stay informed about these trends. We are currently dealing with potentially another supply chain disruption. Shipping delays and disruptions can lead to increased costs for businesses across the board, including insurance companies. These increased operational costs may eventually be passed on to consumers in the form of higher premiums. Disruptions in the supply chain can affect the availability and cost of auto parts, which may influence the cost of repairs and ultimately impact insurance rates. If there are delays in obtaining necessary parts for repairs, insurers may face higher

claims costs, which could contribute to rate increases for policyholders. Rising insurance rates can indeed put a strain on one's wallet when it comes time to pay for coverage. It's always a good idea to
