Happy December to all of you! In this crazy, busy season, I try to remind myself to slow down and focus on memory-making instead of just gift-giving. Do you do the same? I make a point to schedule coffee, lunch, happy hour—whatever sounds doable—with at least two friends or family members each week during December. And these dates away from the hustle and bustle are non-negotiable. I’ve noticed so many people from our neighborhood making a heartwarming difference this holiday season. Young siblings Savannah and Will Moreno’s Holiday of Hope Toy Drive topped the list. Canyon Creek Moms Club is supporting Elevate North Texas, an emergency shelter for youth ages 18-24, as their holiday service project. Warren Caldwell is doing his best to remind all of us to continue to support Network of Community Ministries, especially during December, folks are sharing free items on Facebook, and local shops are sponsoring all kinds of holiday drives. George Bailey would be proud!

Special Thanks Shelly and Eric Morgan, Ginger Johnson, Lara Duarte, Amyana Trigg, Chelsea Flaming, RISD intern Maggie Kennedy For Advertising Questions, please email mobert@hylogroup.com For Editoral Requests, please email nominations@hylogroup.com HyperLocal Media 224 W Campbell Rd, STE 428 Richardson, TX 75080

In this issue, you’ll meet Shelly and Eric Morgan and their family, discover the fun history of a group of women who have been playing tennis together at Canyon Creek Country Club for more than two decades and developing long-lasting friendships on and off the court, and learn about Ginger Johnson, a JJ Pearce senior. You’ll also get to know the Duartes’ precious pets and tempt your taste buds reading about Sugar Social, Chelsea Flaming’s bakery business. We hope you enjoy this issue of Canyon Creek Life and support the advertisers who make it possible. Supporting small businesses by shopping and dining locally is so important during the holidays and you don’t even have to leave our neighborhood to do so! We are lucky to have many wonderful shops and restaurants right here in Canyon Creek. Let’s share the financial love with them and help them end the year strong. Wishing you a festive holiday season and an early Happy New Year, Managing Partners Mike and Kyla Obert

Canyon Creek Pets of the Month How long have you lived in Canyon Creek? My family moved to Canyon Creek in 2007. I was born in 2010 and have lived here my whole life. What do you love most about living in Canyon Creek? I love the neighborly feel of the neighborhood and how we have a real community. There is always someone to play with outside and someone out walking that we can stop and talk to. If you are ever sick or need anything, neighbors always show up with a good meal and conversation. And Halloween is definitely a favorite. We live on a street that goes all out for Halloween and it is so much fun. Please share a fun story of living in Canyon Creek. During the winter storm of 2021, we didn’t have school for a whole week and my friends and I would get together to go sledding down the hill at Prairie Creek Elementary and at the golf course. Then the power went out for a couple of days and we had to snuggle by the fire and the entire family (with our pets, of course) had to sleep in the living room close to the fire to keep warm. It was definitely a week I will never forget!

Lara snuggling with her beloved pets

Tucker, Oreo and Lorna Doone Tell us your name and the names of your pets. My name is Lara Duarte. My parents are Virgilio and Carol Duarte. I have two older brothers, Alex and Daniel Duarte. We have a terrier mix dog of unknown origin named Tucker, Oreo the tuxedo cat, and a grey tabby named Lorna Doone. How long have you had your pets and what was your inspiration for naming them? At four months old, Tucker was given to us by a friend of a friend in August 2018. She needed to rehome her dog because her other dogs didn’t get along with Tucker. We fell in love with him right away. He was originally named Fritz, but we didn’t think that fit him. We went through several names before finally landing on Tucker. The cats were originally fostered through Take Me Home Pet Rescue (TMHPR) during the summer of 2020's COVID lockdown when they were about six 4

weeks old. They were a part of the “Cookie” litter, so their names fit them perfectly. Tell us about their fun tricks, unique talents, quirky personalities, etc. Tucker can sit and lie down on command. He is the best snuggler and loves nothing more than to sit on your lap and get belly rubs. Other than that, his real special talent is barking at everything. He barks at runners, cars, the mailman, when the doorbell rings, and when people high five each other and say goodbye. He is a little high strung, but we love him anyway!

Is there anything else you would love your neighbors to know about you or your pets? We couldn’t imagine our lives without Tucker, Oreo and Lorna Doone. With pets, you always have someone to play with and snuggle with. They keep us entertained and we know they love us unconditionally. They are so much fun!

Oreo and Lorna Doone

Oreo is the funniest cat alive. He loves to be near people, will turn up in the oddest places, and loves to play chase with his sister Lorna and antagonize Tucker. Lorna is a little shy but will turn up out of nowhere to sit on your lap. She also loves to sit on a barstool whenever we are making dinner, just like she is one of us. www.CanyonCreekLife.com

The Morgan Family

Canyon Creek’s “Brady Bunch” By Patti Otte

G

rowing up in the 1970’s meant afternoons watching Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, and the Brady Bunch. Who doesn’t remember singing along to “Here’s the story of a lovely lady, who was bringing up three very lovely girls. All of them had hair of gold, like their mother, the youngest one in curls…” 6

And like Mike and Carol Brady, timing turned out be to everything for Eric and Shelly Morgan. Eight years ago, the two met via a dating app, which resulted in just one lunch date. Eric was busy with his two sons – Will, who is now a freshman at Texas Tech, and Max, a current seventh grade sports enthusiast. All the while, Shelly was www.CanyonCreekLife.com

raising her two daughters – Katelynn, now a mom of two living in Midland, and Camryn, a junior at Texas A&M. Time moved on, but two years after that initial lunch date, Eric and Shelly happened to bump into each other at Pappasito’s Cantina and, says Shelly, “The rest is history! We have now been married for one blissful year!”

Initially a southern California girl, Shelly moved to Plano in 1995 on Super Bowl Sunday. She has been in administrative roles for 25 years and was recently promoted at her current job from the CEO’s Executive Assistant to Chief of Staff. Eric was born in Ethiopia as his father was in the military. They moved to his mother’s hometown in Stockholm, Sweden, for a year, and then moved to Garland when Eric was three years old, where he finished high school. Eric has been a firefighter in Prosper for almost two decades, having taken the Prosper fire test the day after his son was born 18 years ago. Back in 2015, before Eric and Shelly met, Eric was a newly single dad looking to move from the Reservation to Canyon Creek. He specifically sought out a house in Canyon Creek due to its proximity to the schools his kids attended and because of the charming neighborhood and shopping centers. Because options in Canyon Creek were fairly limited at the time, Eric purchased a house after a brief walk around the outside perimeter…without ever having seen the inside! As soon as he and his children moved into the home, Eric installed a new mailbox quite a distance from the front door, knowing he would someday rebuild the home with a front porch spanning the length of the house. Together, Shelly and Eric completed a teardown/rebuild in 2019. Once they rebuilt the house, the mailbox remained in its place, just as Eric had envisioned it for years.

In 2020, Shelly planned a yacht trip for her boss, which consisted of four yachts chartered through the Bahamas. Both she and Eric were attendees. The trip was filled with many surprises for the 32 guests onboard the yachts, but the biggest surprise was up Eric’s sleeve. He smuggled an engagement ring in the couple’s luggage and proposed to Shelly on a deserted island in the middle of the Bahamas. While planning their wedding, the couple discussed a variety of options. Eric didn’t want anything fancy, but Shelly wanted something where family could celebrate with them. They went back and forth on a destination wedding, a court-

house wedding or a traditional wedding for months…until landing on the perfect plan: a surprise backyard wedding. Shelly and Eric’s close friends and family gathered together for what they thought would be a backyard dinner party to send the couple off to elope. Instead, invitees were surprised with a casual wedding at Shelly and Eric’s home, including a food truck, backyard games and a beautiful wedding setup. “It was perfect for us,” states Shelly. 8

One of Eric and Shelly’s new traditions is unwrapping the family Christmas Eve Saran Wrap ball. Laughs Shelly, “If you haven’t experienced it, google it! This is such a great way for the kids to interact and receive fun gifts like $5 Starbucks gift cards, gum, candy, socks, cash, etc.” In addition to creating new traditions, Eric and Shelly love working inside and outside their home…so much so that they recently purchased and renovated a home in Plano and turned it into a rental home. They also www.CanyonCreekLife.com

love concerts, trivia nights, and cooking for their friends. Eric can often be found in their front yard on Lawnmeadow throwing the ball with the boys while Shelly sits on the porch swing reading, listening to music, or checking in by phone on their two beautiful granddaughters, Camillie Ann (four) and Caroline Grace, four months. If you see them at home or around the neighborhood, be sure to stop and say hello.

What’s The Home Design Forecast for 2024? By Lisa Parelli-Monaghan

E

ach year we hear about the latest and greatest for home design and decor. Even though we don’t usually remodel or redecorate every year, we can surely add some touches that will bring the past and present together and spruce up our spaces so they look modern and current with the new trends. It’s amazing how a coat of new paint or minor updates can bring your home quickly into the present. The saying “what goes around comes back around” seems to be true in some of the top design trends for 2024. Here are a few trends that may give you creative ideas for your home. Warm Neutrals – It’s time to say goodbye to all the gray and white tones. You will be seeing warmer neutrals like beige, creamy off-whites and rich browns taking their place. So, if you have white and gray, you can warm it up with browns or rich neutrals. You can do this by bringing in natural woods. The warm neutrals bring back the cozier, welcoming backdrop to your home. Mudrooms – This room made the list last year as well. Everyone needs this room…a place to drop shoes, back-

10

packs, coats, groceries or whatever they are bringing in from the outside. These rooms have always been popular in cold weather climates as the perfect room to enter when coming in from the snow…a place to remove wet snow boots, coats, etc. But they are a perfect space in any home, especially within a laundry room. Wood Grain Cabinets – Gone are the days of slapping a coat of paint on your kitchen cabinets to give your kitchen a new look. Natural wood is now the “go to” in the kitchen for cabinets. White oak and walnut are at the top of the list when selecting cabinetry. We’re seeing the flat panel style with no hardware (think Scandinavian), which creates a clean, modern look. Storage and More Storage – In the kitchen some call storage “appliance garages.” There is no better way to declutter a space, especially in the kitchen, than to conceal countertop appliances such as toasters and blenders, while keeping them accessible. This is done by adding deep cabinet drawers that will house your

www.CanyonCreekLife.com

small appliances while keeping them within reach. Handmade Features – Go to estate sales and flea markets and don’t be afraid of unique or different items. Find those home design elements that feel unique to you, such as an old vanity mirror, custom bathroom vanity, or even special tiles that can be incorporated into a space. This all creates a space that is reflective of you and your personal style. These elements are what make your home special to you. Large Window Banks – Everyone loves natural light in a home and the quickest way to add light is to add windows. Homeowners are now adding full bank windows at the back of their home opening to the outside living or their backyards. Bring the outside in! Whether you follow the trends, there is no right way to redecorate or remodel your home. Let your style and personality shine through…after all, it is your space and you must love where you live. The happiest homeowners are the ones who create a space specifically for themselves.

ore than 25 years ago, a group of women destined to become lifelong friends casually met playing doubles tennis at Canyon Creek Country Club. The ladies played in the nighttime league as they were then all pursuing careers. And while their ages varied, the women found camaraderie on the court and began developing lifelong friendships. As the players began to retire and had more time, they eventually formed a league of their own to be able to play indoors year-round. They now laughingly call themselves "the walking wounded” when they play “due to braces and sometimes bandages!” As these fun friends gathered for sport, they discovered a shared love of reading and travelling. States Amyana Trigg, “Trips were planned, usually by super-efficient and organized Marta Mountjoy, to the NYC Open, the Paribas Open in Indian Wells, and the Savannah WTA Tourney, which sadly was cancelled due to Covid 19.”

The players are still hitting the courts today and now range in age from 69-89. Approximately half are widows and half are enjoying long marriages. Not only do the ladies play tennis together, but they have founded a book club called the Reading Rackets. They meet once a month at Amyana Trigg’s home to discuss their book selection and then head to CCCC to play. In addition, members' birthdays are celebrated in a festive manner each month at a nice venue with cards and dinner, “if anyone admits to aging,” laughs Amyana. Clearly these players have won the game of enduring friendship! 12

SUGAR SOCIAL

a “Sweet” Treat in Canyon Creek

What makes your product unique? I believe that what sets my desserts apart is the knowledge and expertise behind baking them. I really focus on what the experience will be for my customers while eating/enjoying them! I want the desserts to be beautiful, but more importantly taste AMAZING! What is your specialty? For years I baked delicious custom cakes and cookies. In 2024, I will be teaching classes to others on how to bake and decorate. Baking is a wonderful opportunity to unwind and be creative outside of people’s day-to-day work. Do you live in Canyon Creek? If so, what brought you here? We have lived in Canyon Creek Condominiums since 2018 and have loved living near our family and friends in such a beautiful community! Share with us a funny or awesome story of having a business or living in Canyon Creek. Growing my business and even having one right now was only made possible by my incredible Canyon Creek neighbors. When all of my cake/wedding orders cancelled in March of 2020, I wasn’t sure how we would be able to pay bills. Thankfully, DIY cookie kits and free delivery to my neighbors saved the day and with their support, I was able to keep it going. I am beyond grateful for their continued support. Anything else you’d love for your neighbors to know about your business or you? After years of baking special treats for your families, I am so excited to focus more on teaching and hosting baking/decorat-

together to have fun, get creative, and maybe even learn something new in the kitchen! During the pandemic, I moved back into my home to bake but will be back in a kitchen in 2024.

How long have you been in business? I opened Sugar Social in 2016 but have been baking professionally since 2010.

What inspired you to do what you do? I have many memories at a young age watching in awe of my dad cooking in the kitchen. Then in high school, my parents finally got Cable TV with incredible chefs on Food Network baking these insane cakes! I couldn’t believe people were paid to do that!!! I immediately pursued pastry school after high school and thankfully found my passion/career in baking.

Tell us more about Sugar Social! Sugar Social is a bakery created on the idea that desserts have a way of bringing people together, whether it’s a birthday, holiday or family dinner. I wanted to expand on that while gathering people 14

I love working with Chelsea from Sugar Social DFW! I have used her for cakes, cookies, cinnamon rolls, petit fours, and look forward to taking one of her classes soon. She is very responsive, has great attention to detail, and makes the yummiest desserts. Student of the Month late to. My favorite thing about the theatre program at Pearce is the people. I have met some of my closest friends in that program and I could not be more thankful for that. I am also very appreciative of our directors, Heather Biddle and Ethan Armstrong, for all of their talent and support. Outside of school, what do you do for fun, hobbies, work, etc.? Recently, all I’ve been doing outside of school is applying to colleges, but normally I’m pretty busy hanging out with friends or being TikTok famous. Tell us about your family, including pets if you have any. How long have y’all lived in Canyon Creek? My family includes my mom, my dad, my older brother Wyatt (who’s in college now), and our dog Rosie. We have lived in Canyon Creek for 12 years. What do you love most about living in Canyon Creek? I love the community of Canyon Creek the most. I have awesome, loving cousins, other family members, and friends here who are always supportive and there for me. LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Echoes From The Canyon

CHRISTMAS EDITION 2023 Many were wondering what would happen if the Rangers didn’t win the World Series. I guess we’ll never know!! Thanks for the unalloyed joy, Corey and the Boys! On an unseasonably warm evening in November, your Canyon Creek HOA held its Annual Election and Meeting. Our own Richard Luttrell retired from the Board after many years of meritorious service and will be missed. Additions to the Board are the returning Kerry Gaines (“Welcome Back” as John Sebastian might say!) and a new contestant who has answered the call to Service in the form of Stanton Eigenbrodt. Stan memorably served with your correspondent as a curriculum coordinator and advisor to the Leadership Richardson Program and brings an abundance of knowledge and an admirable temperament. One of our guests was a representative of West Coast University and I encourage all to take a tour of the world-class campus located approximately a nine-iron (your mileage may vary) from Collins and Fall Creek. If you know a youngster considering a health care future or even an oldster redeploying to a new career, WCU deserves serious consideration. Our City Manager, Don Magner, gave a tour de force presentation targeted to our piece of paradise here in the Creek and did not shy from informing us as to current and future disruptive events. Out of respect for this audience, we will continue to address these things head-on. The water line project on Renner, the continuation of the infrastructure replacement of Prairie Creek West and the looming Custer (north of Campbell) aka Custer’s Last Stand won’t stop hurting till the pain goes away, but we are Citizens of a City that is investing not just in our Neighborhood but in all of US. Even though he doesn’t do it for the glory, the indispensable Jay Dalehite received several rounds of applause recognizing his staunch and unwavering decades of Service to our Canyon Creek. I am pleased to report that by the time this issue hits a news stand near you, construction on the Jay Dalehite Park is scheduled to begin. Another Guest (and Neighbor) Abbie Kaufmann, the CEO of Network spoke to the volunteer opportunities at 1500 International Dr. (whose friendly door is conveniently located 20

a mere skip and a leap across Collins east of 75). It takes eighty volunteers per day to effectively staff the array of services provided. If you, too, seek the receiving that is the rebound of giving and wish to make friends who will nourish the hunger for companionship, please consider investing your time. And as to your resources, if you can, please give. If you need, please receive. The preservation and, in some cases, restoration of the dignity of the individual is a fundamental cornerstone of the ethos of Network and it is a mighty cause and calling worthy of support. We close today with the final stanza of my favorite Christmas song that captures the sentiment of the Season. “But as he entered his own darkened door He knew the Lord was not coming today For the hours of Christmas had passed away So he went to his room and knelt down to pray And he said, “Dear Lord, why did you delay What kept you from coming to call on me For I wanted so much your face to see.” When soft in the silence a voice he heard. “Lift up your head for I kept my word. Three times my shadow crossed your floor And three times I came to your lonely door. I was the beggar with bruised, cold feet And I was the woman you gave something to eat. I was the child on the homeless street. Three times I knocked and three times I came in And in each time, I found the warmth of a friend. Of all the gifts, love is the best. And I was honored to be your Christmas Guest.” May the Joy of the Season Envelop and Manifest Itself to You in Myriad Ways Simple and Profound, Warren Caldwell Canyon Creek HOA President

Canyon Creek Allstate Insurance suspecting "customers" into thinking they have a legitimate policy. The victim may only find out that the policy was canceled after they have to make an insurance claim. Ghost brokers typically advertise cheap insurance on social media sites or messaging apps. In fact, insurance fraudsters typically tout policies that are much cheaper than competitors' policies, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners. If a so-called agent's insurance rate seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Beware Of False Agents & Fraudulent Policies Scammers have been known to pose as insurance agents selling cheap, fraudulent policies to consumers who think they're obtaining legitimate coverage from a licensed insurer. Victims may not discover they've been scammed until they file a claim — only to be told that their policy is not in force with the company. Doing business with these false insurance agents, sometimes called "ghost brokers,"

could put you, your family and your finances at risk. Consider the following to help avoid becoming a victim of this type of insurance fraud. Ghost brokers may apply for a genuine policy in your name, keep your premium payments, then cancel the policy shortly after — all without your knowledge. This practice allows the fraudsters to deceive un-

These watch-outs may help you spot a fraudulent insurance agent. Be wary of: • Agents who advertise cheap insurance on social media sites or messaging apps. • Agents who communicate solely via social media or email. The NAIC says fraudsters may not list a phone number or may be difficult to reach via phone. • Agents who ask for cash-only payments in person, through social media or via cash-transfer mobile apps, according to PropertyCasualty360. • Agents who promise to secure an insur ance policy for you without providing any direct communication or docu ments from the insurance carrier. • Don't sign any paperwork until you've checked that the agent is licensed. • Be wary of agents who demand cash-only payment. Don't make any payments until you've confirmed the agent's license.
