This issue we catch up with Laura Jo Hawk who has just completed a busy year as a member of Leadership Stark County’s 22nd Class Signature Program in addition to being involved with the Mercy Service League; Canton Rotary; and the board of the North Central Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Laura Jo, how did Leadership Stark County help you grow personally? Some of the experiences were simply beyond my comfort zone, putting me into a world that I knew existed, yet had not personally experienced (the poverty simulation, the Samaritan’s Table meal program, and the Stark County Jail tour). Through it all, I had the opportunity to discover the personalities of my class mates; developing relationships and hopefully, lasting friendships. Any surprises throughout the program? During the Cultural Diversity program I discovered that people whom I thought
were the most like me, had had totally different upbringings than I had – yet we all found ourselves in the same place and time through Leadership Stark County. As a development and fund-raising professional, give us your viewpoint on the Signature program. The Leadership program content has been first-rate – from the variety of the activities, to the various speakers and guests, to the diverse locations throughout the region. I don’t think we ever met in the same place twice! I am extremely glad that I got to meet so many interesting people. What leadership lessons have you learned that you could share with others? I have learned that leaders come in all sizes, from all walks of life, and are formed by many different experiences. But all leaders have the same basic traits of being able to connect with others, have a vision and ability to articulate it, are willing to learn from new experiences as well as learn from mistakes, and have the ability to get others to share in their passion. How does it feel to have completed your year as part of Leadership (continued on next page)

The entire year has gone so quickly; it seems like just yesterday we were at the Class Retreat – strangers yet eager to get to know each other, a bit nervous, yet excited to be together. The Leadership year was one of discovery, both personally and professionally, as I learned and experienced so many things that I had never thought to consider before, or if I had, I simply took for granted.
I am extremely proud to now be a Leadership Alum and Grad. It is an experience that will be with me for a lifetime. And I am sad to see the year come to an end yet hopeful for the future that we can create for our little corner of the world in Stark County.

LSC Loses Legendary Leader: REMEMBERING HARLAN D. DOBRY Leadership Stark County’s first executive director and one of its founders, Harlan D. Dobry passed away on October 14, 2009 at the age of 90. In 1997 as part of a “focus on the Charter Class series” Kathy Poporad, 3rd class, wrote the following tribute which is a fitting remembrance of Mr. Dobry. At a time when most men and women are thinking about making plans for retirement, Harlan D. Dobry began a new career as Executive Director of Leadership Canton. As early as 1984, Harlan had become familiar with other community leadership programs around the state and felt that Canton could truly benefit from such a program.With other items having greater priority on the
Chamber agenda, Harlan, as the then Canton Chamber of Commerce President realized that this dream would have to wait. But later that year the Chamber board approved of establishing the program and according to Harlan Dobry, “the movers and shakers of Canton set about to make this dream a reality.” Although Harlan was set to retire as Chamber President in 1987, he agreed to serve as the first executive director of Leadership Canton, “just to get it started.” His enthusiasm for every aspect of the program was evident, including: generating support from the business community, brainstorming with other Leadership program Executive Directors around the country, and establishing a very effective marketing and promotion plan for Leadership Canton.
His willingness to serve comes as no surprise to those who know of Harlan’s history of stewardship and community service. Early in his career he became acquainted with Jaycees’ activities and as he puts it “… began to make my avocation my vocation.” This led to his career shift from human resources management to chamber executive. For sixteen years he served as President of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce leading this organization through major growth years. In 1991, Harlan Dobry decided to take the term “retirement” seriously and although he had lived and worked in a variety of cities and states chose to remain in Canton, the city which he served so well. Recognizing Harlan’s tireless efforts in establishing and administering such a strong, credible leadership program in (continued on next page)

Harlan D. Dobry our community, the Alumni Association of Leadership Stark County recognized Harlan Dobry as an Honorary Member at the tenth anniversary celebration June 19th (1997). In presenting the award, Joe Cutinella, former chairman of the Board of Leadership Canton, noted, “It isn’t very often that a person can make a mark on the community he lives in. Harlan was given the opportunity to do so which he accomplished with great effectiveness. Harlan’s role in Leadership Canton (Stark County) will be remembered for a long, long time.”

2010 Government Leadership Academy Are you or someone you know interested in public service, thinking about running for office, or aspiring to build leadership skills? Applications are now available for the 2010 Government Leadership Academy. Designed for aspiring candidates, elected and appointed officials, and those interested in public service, the Academy is recommended by both local democratic and republican parties.

Congratulations! Stephanie Snow Werren, 19th class, was named Graduate School Alumna of the Year by Malone University at their annual alumni awards banquet. Stephanie received her MBA at Malone in 1999 and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science/international studies from Miami University. Currently serving as development director for Leadership Stark County, Stephanie was instrumental in the initiation of the Spotlight Stark County young professional’s program, now in its fourth year. Stephanie is also responsible for the Annual Fund and sponsorship campaign as well as alumni programming. Stephanie is currently active in the Stark State College Presidents Advisory Panel, the Early Childhood Resource Center Ambassadors in Action, is chairperson of the 2010 Camp Wakonda Auction, and was past president of Canton Mothers of Multiples. Barbara Ewing Cockroft, 10th class, received the Dr. Raymond W. Bixler Education Award from the Ashland University Alumni Association and Board of Trustees. She teaches at Lake Middle School and is an adjunct professor at Ashland. Maureen Ater, 21st class, marketing director for The Repository and About magazine, received the Canton Jaycees’ Distinguished Service Award during its 70th annual Service Award and Bosses’ Night Banquet.

Eric Belden, 14th class, was recently named executive director at Pathway Caring for Children. Eric was formerly with the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival, a department of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce along with Leadership Stark County. At FirstMerit Corp., Eric Dellapina, 18th class, was promoted to president and manager of commercial banking in the Stark County Region and Western Pennsylvania.
