NEW VISIONS OF CARE

Sharing, learning and collaboration – Christian Science nursing

Did you notice the new logo? “…the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” (Rev 22:2 the leaves) This brighter symbol represents the quiet and joyful energy of the organization moving forward.

The Executive Director role is filled by the team of Peggy Gautschi and Barb Weiser. Having two sets of eyes employed has allowed the volunteer Board of Directors to return to their preferred policy role versus operational.

In May, both Peggy and Barb attended the conference for the Association of Organizations for Christian Science Nursing (AOCSN). Collaboration, learning, and sharing are the purpose of the conference. Barb became acquainted with Executive Directors from Christian Science nursing organizations around the world. Peggy continued as chair of the Trustees committee which focuses on how to support Boards of Christian Science nursing organizations more fully. They also were able to confirm that Canterbury Crest Field Reps that are Journal -listed Christian Science nurses could be trained to present the LeVerger Spiritual Dimension of Care workshop. (See page 3 for more on workshops.)

The uniqueness of Canterbury Crest’s model of supporting healing through Christian Science nursing, including the past use of the guest house, continues to draw great interest from other Christian Science nursing organizations. They ask why – to expand the availability of Christian Science nurses - and how to operationally expand their own support of healing through Christian Science nursing in their unique areas.

Our Christian Science nursing organizations are in collaboration with each other, not competition.

A collaboration of giving and receiving

We are a communit y! We share, we collaborate, we coordinate.

At Canterbury Crest we are part of the world-wide Christian Science community! In the Pacific Northwest (PNW), we share, collaborate, and coordinate in caring.

Recently, a Canterbury Crest Field Rep was scheduled to work at Sunrise Haven. (A Christian Science care facility in Kent, Washington). When she arrived, she brought donated items Canterbury Crest Field Reps did not anticipate using in the next year. Sunrise Haven in return, gifted items useful for Field Reps, including a lifter and two sleep chairs.

One chair was “just right” for a Christian Science nursing client, the other items went to the Field Rep’s Canterbury Crest storage unit in Vancouver, Washington.

Each of our Field Reps has use of a storage unit for “temporary aids” like canes, walkers, wheelchairs, incontinence products, bandaging supplies, etc. All items can be used in their independent Christian Science nursing cases or by anyone who asks, or needs them.

Canterbury Crest can pick up and deliver if it’s in an area local to our staff. Otherwise, volunteers are needed. There is no fee charged for equipment or supplies when they are available from the storage units. Supplies are distributed to other Field Reps and/or donated to other organizations when no longer needed.

Collaboration in action!

My son, husband, the donor of a sleep chair and recipient are all available on the same day! Great! Let’s do this!

What are we doing?

Coordinating to pick up a donated sleep chair, then bring it to a home where the sleep chair had malfunctioned.

At the home, we were able to remove the old chair and deliver the newly donated one. We made sure the chair went up enough to “dump” the client (their word) and was able to lay back. The client was thrilled!

The Field Rep coordinating the move found a possible repair place - so off we went. At the repair shop, we discovered that they typically come in-person to do repairs. However, the chair was not a brand they sold. Had they come, they would not have been able to do the repair.

Next step – donate it. Goodwill would not take it, but Value Village did. It was gratefully accepted!

FIELD REPS & CARE

The value of participating in a workshop or seminar

Canterbury Crest is collaborating with Sunrise Haven and their trainer Pam Greene to bring the LeVerger Spiritual Dimension of Care (SDC) seminar to church communities. This seminar helps set the foundation of Christian Science nursing and its place in our Manual under “Discipline” – “Guidance for Members.” This By-law directly applies to all members of The Mother Church. We are ALL expected to care for others in practical ways.

Meetings at the AOCSN conference between our EDs and LeVerger emerged with a plan for at least one Field Rep who is a Journal -listed Christian Science nurse, to acquire the LeVerger training required to facilitate the LeVerger Spiritual Dimension of Care seminar. This seminar, along with the Good Samaritan workshop make up the core educational component of the Canterbury Crest model. Having an in-house facilitator will give Canterbury Crest the ability to deliver a complete program to the communities we serve.

WE ARE SCHEDULING SUMMER & FALL 2024 WORKSHOPS NOW!
