FALL 2023 | Supporting Christian Science Nursing in the Pacific Northwest

JESUS: The Original ‘Remote’ Worker By Peggy Gautschi – Board President & Co-Executive Director “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.” — Matt. 4:23

Working remotely is a common method of employment these days. Many people did not return to in-person work after offices reopened. Today’s technology has allowed all kinds of jobs to be performed without setting foot in a building. Christ Jesus’ remote work And what about Jesus? He always worked remotely, never in just one place. In Mark we hear how Jesus was out when he got a call to go quickly to the house of Jairus, the synagogue’s ruler, because his daughter was dying. While Jesus was on his way a woman who was bleeding touched him - which, according to Mosaic law, was seen as unclean and unlawful. Instead of rebuking the woman, he healed her. As he continued to Jairus’ house, he learned that Jairus’ daughter had died. As

soon as Jesus heard the news he said, “Be not afraid, only believe.” When they arrived there were many people that were upset and Jesus put them all out, told the girl to arise, and she was healed. (Mark 5:23) The Good Samaritan – a journeyman prepared to care And what about the story Jesus gave about loving our neighbor, the Good Samaritan, including the Innkeeper? The good Samaritan, journeying in remote areas, came upon a hurt man. He did not hesitate to bind up his wounds. He was prepared to care for him with oil, and bandages, and then transported him to an Inn, giving his own funds to the Innkeeper to support the hurt man’s care. (Luke 10:30) Christian Science nurses – remote workers in the field – prepared to care These two examples show us the importance of remote working and being available to come to the people where they are. Isn’t this also how our dedicated Christian Science nurses work too? Like Jesus, as private duty, inhome Christian Science nurses, they travel from one place to another; and like the good Samaritan, they provide the necessary practical care in a safe, quiet Christly atmosphere. Like Jesus, they bring an absolute acknowledgment of present perfection by not being impressed by the material picture. This supports both the patient and the Christian Science practitioner in the manifestation of healing. Those who call for help are comforted by the confidence and expectation expressed by the Christian Science nurse who comes to their home. The following pages of this newsletter will show, in detail, the different ways Canterbury Crest is moving its mission forward to “support healing through the ministry of Christian Science nursing”- in the Pacific Northwest.
