Dear Cannon Supporters,
What is Advancement?
Amy Hunt Director of Advancement
Through this 2023-24 Annual Report, our intention is for the community to gain a sense of the many ways that your collective generosity has powered the education, core values, and innovation at the heart of Cannon. This report reveals only a small glimpse into the many ways that your partnership has benefited Cannon’s students, faculty, and campus. Other important contributions—the care, support, and encouragement you bring into our community—are harder to capture on a page, though equally powerful.
This year, individual gifts supported the growing needs of the community influencing our ability to hire new security staff, update and enhance the Lower School playground as an outdoor learning space, add a state-ofthe-art Audio Lab to promote growth in the arts, and bolstered operational initiatives to deliver innovation in teaching, enhancements to campus life, and increased financial aid. Your partnership launched plans from the drawing board to reality.
Partnership is key to sustaining and advancing our school to meet the changing needs of each generation. Cannon relies on partners like you to help bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost to operate Cannon, educate students, and employ talent, while upholding assurance for our institution’s future. Just as our retirement accounts help us prepare for our personal future, your investment in Cannon helps create a quality learning journey for tomorrow’s changemakers.
Every reflection of partnership—whether through volunteering, attending events, mentoring, giving a personal testimony as an advocate, or making a philanthropic contribution—enhances our community’s infinite potential. We are grateful for your ongoing support and shared commitment to excellence.
Partnering is the key word. Cannon School is simply not able to sustain without it. Thank you for choosing to partner with us. We value the message of trust your choice conveys in our efforts to deliver an exceptional education and learning experiences to students.
There is much joy through being a part of something beyond oneself and partnering to influence something profoundly meaningful. Education will always be meaningful and worthy of our investment. I’m so happy to be here at Cannon and engaged in this work with all of you.

With gratitude, Amy
Hunt

2023-2024 BY THE NUMBERS
ENDOWMENT INVESTMENTS
The endowment at Cannon School builds the foundation for long-term stability and success, providing a perpetual source of support for the school.
Through an endowed gift, a donor may provide future generations with the exceptional experience of a Cannon education.
An endowment is a permanent fund that supports what matters most to you, whether it is helping students thrive, supporting faculty and curriculum enhancements, or enriching our innovative programs. The principal is held in perpetuity and invested for long-term growth. A percentage of the endowment’s total market value is made available each year to support the purpose as mutually agreed upon by you and the school.
New endowment funds may be created with gifts of $25,000 or more.
Establishing a named fund provides a personally meaningful way for you to support Cannon.
An individual or family may choose to establish a named fund that will support an area of the school that is most important to them and their family, support Cannon’s general endowment, or support an existing endowed fund. The principal from these funds is held in perpetuity and invested for long-term growth.
Cannon
School’s endowment was at a balance of $17,012,369 as of June 30, 2024.
Based on spending limits established by the Board, a portion of the total market value is made available to support the school, and any remaining funds are reinvested to ensure the school’s financial stability for generations to come. For a named endowed fund, according to those same spending guidelines, a portion of the total market value of the fund is made available to support the purpose of the fund as defined by the donor.
A fund can be established through a multi-year pledge payable within five years or a one-time gift. The Advancement Office will work with you to prepare a written endowment agreement outlining the purpose of the fund and Cannon School’s commitment to administering the fund according to your intentions.
Cannon’s policy states that the draw rate is determined annually by the Board (Finance Committee) within a range of 0-4%. The draw amount is calculated based on the 3-year rolling average of market value on December 31 of the prior fiscal years. No draw or spending is allowed within 12 months of inception for newly created endowments. Unless otherwise specified, no draw is allowed for endowments that have not reached the minimum corpus threshold as outlined in the endowment agreement (typically $25,000). The corpus only consists of contributions to the endowment. It does not include earnings or capital appreciation.

2023-2024 DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

LS Playground Gets an Update
While students were on break this summer, construction crews were hard at work updating the Lower School playground. Its first update since 2014, the expanded space sports new additions like an imaginative play area for younger students, increased areas for sports like soccer and basketball, and enhanced safety features, while also maintaining perennial favorites like the swings.
“We believe in the benefits of daily physical activities – both inside and outside of the classroom,” says Dr. Regina Nixon, Head of Lower School. “We are determined to make sure that children are allowed to play.”
New spaces for running, climbing, and playing will support early childhood development priorities such as increased motor skills and social and emotional skill growth—putting core values into action through unstructured activities. “The new playground reflects the type of learning experience that we want our students to have,” says Nixon.
The exciting thing is these updates are only the playground’s first phase of updates. A second phase of
development is already in the works and the Lower School expects to roll out those additions next summer. An added perk of the new playground? “No mulch to make its way into shoes,” laughs Nixon.
The new playground is funded in part by Emily and Dan Davis and by the Cannon Fund. Construction and labor were generously supplied by JD Goodrum General Contractors.
“We are so honored and excited to be able to support the Lower School playground renovation. Our children, Kendall and Drew, spent many happy days enjoying their playground time with friends and teachers while in Lower School. We have seen what has been so thoughtfully planned for the landscape of the playground, and we are thrilled that students in the Cannon community will grow, play and thrive in this amazing new space!”
– Emily Davis
New Audio Lab Opens Doors to Creating Endless Possibilities

Cannon students have a new space on campus this fall where they can go during a free period to practice music, rehearse a presentation, or even record a podcast.
The Texas Grace Audio Lab opened its doors this school year, thanks to a generous gift made by Robyn and Dan Needham. The addition of this recording studio will make Cannon School one of the only independent schools in the region to offer on-site recording and production capabilities to students.
The idea for an audio lab came about after Willa Needham ’24 took a Modern Ensemble course during her senior year. The class, led by Director of Band, Jazz & Music Tech Brad Davis, opened her eyes to pushing boundaries in making music. “Mr. Davis encourages students to think outside the box,” says Willa. “That push he gives to move beyond what’s conventional and stretch your talents opens up new possibilities for everyone.”
Seeing the impact that music had on their daughter’s learning journey, Willia’s parents Robyn and Dan decided to make a gift to Cannon to honor Mr. Davis and the impact he had on artists like Willa.
“At the first Modern Ensemble performance we attended, we were awestruck by Brad’s innovation and his influence on helping students explore their creativity,” says Robyn. The name of the studio, Texas Grace Audio Lab, is a nod to Willa’s Texas roots and stage name.
Creativity fuels the passion behind Davis’s teaching style—and he doesn’t want the studio to be limited to just making music. “The Audio Lab is going to provide exciting new fertile ground for our Music Tech and Modern Ensemble classes, a podcast recording hub for the entire school, as well as long-needed practice space for our musicians. But I really think this room is so much more than that,” says Davis. He envisions students of all ages using the recording studio for different projects—from recording spoken word poetry to performing old-time radio dramas to learning to mix sound effects.
A space that opens doors for every student aligns with the vision that the Needhams have for the audio lab. “We want all departments of the school to benefit from this gift, not just the music aspect,” says Robyn. Inclusion and innovation align with the Needham family values and Robyn hopes the audio lab will provide a legacy for Cannon to keep shaping and spreading those values. Davis believes that the audio lab will launch Cannon
into new creative territory. “Taking this bold step will position Cannon School as a leader in 21st century music education, setting a new standard among our peer schools,” he states. “The Audio Lab isn’t just a room with shiny new equipment—it will be a jewel in Cannon’s crown, a space where innovation thrives, and where the passion for music and technology converge seamlessly.”
“We want all departments of the school to benefit from this gift, not just the music aspect.”
– Robyn Needham

Security Upgrades
Welcome
to Cannon, Brad Leak!
Several security enhancements were rolled out this year, thanks to the Cannon communities generous support.
Many of you would have already met Brad Leak and welcomed him into the Cannon community. Mr. Leak is a retired CMPD officer who previously worked at Queens University and UPS. Leak joined us this summer and is positioned within the Upper School building. His hiring enables quicker and more efficient response times across all divisions.
Cannon also recently installed a license plate recognition system, enabling us to collaborate with the Concord Police Department in identifying any suspicious vehicles. One of the main benefits of this system is the advance warning that Cannon security will receive should we need to be on the lookout for a suspicious vehicle or person, while not disrupting the learning environment.
An upgraded Door Access Control System was successfully installed. The new Door Access Control system allows Middle School and Upper School students to utilize both passes, mobile phones and PIN codes to access the building. This upgraded system increases flexibility, which in turn allows us to enhance building security throughout the day. As a school, our primary mission is to be a place of learning, and this new system allows Cannon to operate fluidly and efficiently without compromising safety measures.
In addition to the above upgrades, faculty and staff attended multiple professional development sessions and this included training on areas of safety, security and crisis management. The ongoing training will continue throughout the year.
As we continue to assess the needs of the school, we are thankful for the funding that the Cannon Fund brings to enable Cannon to proactively look at ways of bolstering security on site.

WITH GRATITUDE
The advancement of Cannon School’s teaching, learning and fulfillment of our mission has been made possible thanks to the generosity of our community— current and past parents, grandparents, alumni, corporate partners, faculty and staff, and friends.
Thank you.
CORPORATE PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
