Call for Papers:

Black Feminist Truth Telling: Stories, Statements, and Collective Meaning Making

Guest Editor: Dr. Stephanie Y. Evans, Georgia State University

Deadline: July 1, 2024

Global Black Thought

, the official journal of the African American Intellectual History Society (AAIHS), is now accepting submissions for a special issue that traces the changes and continuity of truth telling in Black feminist thought. Consensus is never the goal of scholarship, but Black feminist writing communities comprise critical spaces for telling what Black feminist scholar Patricia Bell-Scott refers to as “flat-footed truths.” And these truths thrive in community. In this special issue, authors will explore truth telling as a practice of Black feminism in the US and across the Black Diaspora. Specifically, this volume allows an interdisciplinary community to consider what it means to present information that is, as Bell-Scott identifies, “straightforward, unshakable, and unembellished.”

This event is a part of Emory’s Pathways Center, which works to integrate career advising, alumni mentoring, and academic planning for all of Emory’s undergraduates.

At the Social Impact Careers Networking Night, undergraduate students will connect with Emory alumni who have excelled in diverse careers that affect positive social change.

This is a casual “mixer” style program – not a career fair or recruiting event. Participants will stand face-to-face and engage in rich dialogue.

Join a three-day conference to nurture collective liberation in the election year. The time to act is now: When freedom rises, we all flourish. This spring, join scholars, artists, prophets and organizers to find rest, build political power, and dream expansively about the world we deserve.

DAY ONE: BE WELL

We cannot effectively love our neighbors if we do not love ourselves. Particularly in these overwhelming days, caring for your body and spirit is essential. Rest and revival are the foundation on which we build a movement.

DAY TWO: DO JUSTICE

As fascism rises, there are so many crucial issues. Often, we feel pulled in a thousand directions: Antiracism, labor rights, reproductive freedom, gun violence, climate catastrophe, queer liberation, welcoming migrants, affordable housing and more demand our attention. Leave with better policy knowledge and skills for organizing, inspired to take these gifts home with you.

DAY THREE: DREAM WILDLY

It’s not enough to condemn unjust systems, we must live into different ways of being. Every change begins with people who dare to envision something different. On our final day, we will model what it feels like to build communities that welcome everyone, exactly as we are. We’ll leave inspired to build a more perfect union for generations to come.

What is Transition into Ministry or TiM?

Plymouth’s Transition into Ministry (TiM) program offers new pastors a 27-month, supported first call in which they fully serve our congregation as pastors but also reflect, learn, and build the practices and skills they need to sustain a career in congregational ministry.

Meeting the Needs of our TiMs

All of our TiMs have arrived at Plymouth within a year after graduating from divinity school. Ordination in the United Church of Christ (UCC) and other denominations is a separate process that includes their formal education plus other requirements. Some of our TiMs have been ready to be ordained pending their call to Plymouth, while others have needed to complete this process while at Plymouth.

Beyond ordination, residents at Plymouth arrive with varying goals Some want to become solo pastors once they leave us and understand they will likely be called to serve much smaller congregations. Others have wanted to become pastors at larger multi-staff churches. Some want to specialize in particular types of ministry, like youth ministry or church planting. And, of course, some arrive at Plymouth, more uncertain about their direction.

Meeting the Needs of Plymouth

Our pastoral residents serve as full-time associate pastors while at Plymouth. They are not interns and all of them are eager to serve us as our pastors. We do our best to give them regular responsibilities for preaching, leading worship, teaching, and pastoral care. Beyond these basics, we try to give them projects or experiences in their areas of interest or areas where they need to grow. Sometimes, we also need them to serve in areas where we have a need such as a staff vacancy, a special project, or a temporary focal area.
