The Story Behind The Photo

Our photographs reflect just a tiny moment of our lives. However, these simple snapshots of the past hold stories which, although hidden to most viewers, stand out clearly in their owners’ minds every time they look at them. My students shared with me the story behind a photo which is very meaningful to them and I wish to share some of these stories with you.

In September 2019, my son decided that he wanted to work outside of Spain. He was only eighteen! I recommended a country where people spoke English. He agreed with me and he chose Rotterdam because he had a friend there. First of all, we visited the city together and, in November, he went back to Rotterdam with a friend to stay there and he looked for a job. Due to the Covid, I was unable to visit my son for four months. Before the Covid, my son had got a new job, a good job. In July 2020, I was able to go to Rotterdam to see my son. We met in the city center and went to dinner at an Indian restaurant. My son came with his workmate, who was his flatmate too. The meal was delicious and the company, wonderful. My son’s workmate was very funny and we laughed a lot and then he took this photo.

This photo is very special for me. The picture shows part of my family and it was taken 11 years ago, when we spent a holiday in Chile. I am in the picture with my cousins. This day we were celebrating one birthday, so we all gathered at my grandmother’s home and we had a great time together. We made a barbecue and prepared some salads. One aunt brought the cake and I put the balloons on the wall with my cousins’ help. Everyone helped to prepare the party and we all enjoyed spending time together. I hope to go back home soon. My family in Spain and I love going to Chile because our relatives are always waiting for us with love.

This photo was taken five years ago, in 2016. It was a trip that I did with my cousin. Our best friend got married in Mexico and we went to see him. The flight ticket was cheaper if we made a stopover in New York, so we decided to spend a week enjoying the city because we had one month of holidays. The day of the photo, we rented some bicycles to take a tour around Central Park. It was fun, though we ended really tired because that park is enormous!

This is one of my favourite photos. It shows my family and my daughter took the photo in the winter of 2018, when we were on holiday at Christmas in Madrid. We were there for around five days and we spent New Year’s Eve in a theater, watching The Lion King. Madrid is beautiful at Christmas because there are many lights, many ornaments and a lot of people in the streets. We liked the Christmas atmosphere although shopping is horrible and the weather is very cold for me. I like this photo because we are together. Also, it was the first time that my son visited a big city and the first time we saw a big musical. We enjoyed it a lot!
