news cover story

Culture and creativity collide as Enlighten returns to town This year’s Enlighten festival will take place from 1 to 11 March – a week and a half where culture and creativity collide in Canberra. The national institutions will be lit up with digital art projections by night, and the National Triangle precinct will come alive with music, entertainment, and food and beverage stalls. Later in the month, 9-17 March, hot air balloons will fly over Lake Burley Griffin in the morning. People should come “to have a great night out, to see something really interesting and exciting, and see the city showcase some of its best elements”, says Ross Triffitt, executive branch manager at Events ACT. This year, Mr Triffitt says, there will be a lot of variety across the architectural projections. To celebrate the 35th birthday of Parliament House, which opened in May 1988, the façade will show projections of a Lego model of the building designed by Lego-certified

professional and TV personality, Ryan ‘Brickman’ McNaught. “Everyone’s familiar with Lego, [so] it’ll be a great way to see this iconic building change into something that people can relate to,” Mr Triffitt says. The two galleries’ digital projections will showcase Indigenous artists. At the National Portrait Gallery, Dylan Mooney, a legally blind Indigenous and South Sea Islander artist, will draw a different portrait each night to be projected onto the building as he creates it. No two nights will be the same. The National Gallery of Australia will launch Vincent Namatjira’s Australia in colour, a commissioned projection and sound-based work. “One of the things we’re most fortunate to have in this city is the national cultural institutions that are the holders of the nation’s stories,” Mr Triffitt says. “Enlighten is the one

time that we bring everything together in an innovative and different way.” The projections on the buildings will be partnered with illuminated installations. A virtual reality experience, from Studio Go Go, is influenced by Leonardo da Vinci’s fabulous flying machines: a glider, skydiving, an ornithopter, and a helical screw. Meanwhile, dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures will roam around Civic Square, in the City Illuminations exhibition, Before Us. (continued page 6)

Local healthcare focus: Belconnen’s new doctor listening to patients and advocating for them

Dr Peranevi Thayaparan, the new doctor practicing at Ochre Medical Centre Bruce on Ginninderra Drive, has wanted to be a general practitioner ever since high school. “It feels like a lifetime ago!” she says. “I did work experience at a GP clinic and loved it. The breadth of issues you see in one day including procedures like skin cancer biopsies - it was fascinating.” “Then I was lucky enough to get a rural GP placement during medical school,” she says. “When you go rural, you get far more hands-on exposure. I was given my own

consulting room and saw my own patients before reporting back to my supervisor, rather than just observing a GP at work as you would in the city.” While on a placement in a town she describes as rather “alternative”, Dr Thayaparan tells of a patient with multiple abscesses across his abdomen. “He had put crystals on them to try and treat them,” she says, “but that hadn’t helped. My focus was on explaining the risks of leaving them untreated as they could end up septic and become a very serious issue.”

“I eventually convinced him that western medical intervention might be of benefit. He needed antibiotics to start with due to the multitude of abscesses. I suspected he might actually also need surgical drainage, but I had to work with him to develop a treatment plan with which he was comfortable and surgical intervention was a step too far for him at that point. We therefore landed in the middle - with antibiotics to start and then a follow-up if they didn’t work.” “That experience showed me the importance of taking the time to make sure patients feel heard and adopting a nonjudgmental approach - not ‘why are you using crystals?’ but ‘I appreciate that is your preferred route. I just want you to know how it may evolve and impact you, and my recommendation is this.’ By respecting his views and autonomy, we got further than we would have otherwise.” “At the end of day, medicine doesn’t have all the answers and we know there are gaps in our understanding - so as long as somebody makes a well-informed choice, I have no problem with their preferred approach.”

Key interest areas for Dr Thayaparan are women’s health and sexual health. “I find antenatal so rewarding,” she says. “There can be complications, but it’s generally such a rewarding outcome and I really enjoy it. With women’s health in general, I like advocating for my patients, especially those with endometriosis. It’s a condition that really needs more of a spotlight - it’s so debilitating, often picked up late and not managed adequately. I enjoy being part of the care team for people with endometriosis and being that voice to advocate for them.” Away from work, Dr Thayaparan laughs that she’s ‘pretty boring’. A foodie, she loves baking and travelling as well as skiing and playing tennis. “It’s great to experience the world. I loved travelling around South East Asia - Malaysia, Singapore and India are all fantastic destinations with amazing food! I love New Zealand too. I’m a massive Lord of the Rings fan and my sister has 200 photos of me posing at Hobbiton!” Dr Thayaparan is accepting new patients at Ochre Medical Centre Bruce. Bookings can be made at ochrehealth.com.au or by calling the practice on 6180 8500.

aspects as well as the physical components of pelvic health. Alongside physio work, Lisa teaches pilates and posts workouts on YouTube - search for “Canberra Physio & Pilates” to view her channel. Her work in supporting older patients was recently recognised with a nomination for a COTA (Council on the Ageing) ACT award for improving the lives of older Canberrans. Her message to anybody who is struggling is that there are

people who can and want to help. “Whether you have urinary leakage, are experiencing prolapse or dealing with faecal incontinence, you are not alone. You don’t see other people’s pelvic problems and it’s not something people share, but many others are facing the same challenges and there are solutions available.” Lisa Moffatt is accepting new clients at Ochre Medical Centre Bruce. Bookings can be made via ochrehealth.com.au or by calling the practice on 6180 8500.

The physio tackling tough women’s health issues Lisa Moffatt, the new physiotherapist at Ochre Medical Centre Bruce, can pinpoint the moment that launched her career trajectory. “I was 16, doing my high school placement at a physiotherapy clinic. One day, a pregnant patient came in and I sat in on an ultrasound of her belly. I thought it was the coolest thing in the whole world! That’s what started me on the path to managing women’s pelvic health.” Originally from Melbourne, Lisa studied at La Trobe University before relocating to Canberra. Many of her patients are females including pregnant, postnatal or postmenopausal women struggling with incontinence. “It can be such an emotional topic,” she says. “It’s such a fundamental bodily function that we take for granted. The loss of this function often triggers an intense emotional response.” Managing restroom urgency

can be challenging, but Lisa shares insightful tips. “Wiggle your toes when that urgency arises” - it might just be the trick to regain control and avoid any uncomfortable situations while walking to the restroom. Furthermore, Lisa highlights the importance of professional help in diagnosis and developing a tailored treatment plan to handle pelvic health problems. Being part of people’s health care team and experiencing the gratification of patients’ success is truly rewarding for Lisa. Witnessing their relief from daily embarrassment, bedsheet changes, and the subsequent boost in self-esteem and confidence is genuinely remarkable. Lisa’s commitment to creating a safe and open space for patients to discuss their concerns and her holistic approach to healthcare is key to addressing the emotional

news cover story (from page 4) A free shuttle bus will travel between the city and the National Triangle. “There’s a real mix of fabulous and rich experiences to the public, but there are some much greater stories and cultural narratives that sit beside these pieces of work,” Mr Triffitt says. A “very strong food and beverage offering” is also on the menu. The Enlighten Food Park, “a playground for foodies”, will feature food trucks from across the east coast of Australia and local favourites. The popular BentSpoke Beer Garden will return, with local food trucks and vendors. A new activation, Bar Berra, will showcase some of Canberra’s finest wines and speciality cocktails from Canberra distilleries. The festival has “an amazing lineup” of musicians, Mr Triffitt says. The Hoodoo Gurus, “one of the best-known and most iconic bands in Australia”, will perform with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra on Sunday 10 March. The ACT Government has commissioned awardwinning young composer Alex Turley to write an arrangement of their works. “That’s going to be a really special piece, to see that delivered in a world-first at Stage 88,”

Mr Triffitt says. First Nations artists Thelma Plum, Jem Cassar-Daley, Dan Sultan, Briggs, and Jeremy Whiskey will perform at the National Gallery in the Enlighten After Dark program. Local talent including Sophie Edwards, the SunBears, and Los Chavos will perform at the Festival Hub, supported by visiting artists like Salt and Steel, the Rayes, and the Tullamarines. “We’re a city born from a sense of purpose, designed to capture the way of life, aspirations, and ideals of a nation,” Mr Triffitt says. The last day of the festival, Monday 11 March, begins with the Canberra Day Appeal Fun Run, followed by entertainment in Commonwealth Park. The Fun Run raises money for charity; profits from the entry fees go to Hands Across Canberra. Commonwealth Park will be activated from 10am to 5pm. There will be a local food and makers market organised by Local Village Markets, who run the Haig Park and Little Burley Markets, with street food from around the world and picnic options. Flexible and fulfilling work for back-to-work parents For many parents re-entering the workforce after full-time parenting, finding a job that balances flexibility, fulfillment, and family commitments can be challenging. Becoming a carer to support seniors in their homes can be the perfect solution. Being a home care carer allow those of us that have parental responsibilities to manage work hours around family responsibilities, providing availability for school pick-ups. Moreover, the skills developed through caregiving are highly transferable to

home care support roles. Patience, empathy, and organisation skills are assets that back-to-work parents possess in abundance. The work is deeply meaningful. Assisting seniors with their daily tasks not only makes a tangible difference in their lives but also provides fulfillment and purpose to the caregivers, particularly for parents whose nurturing instincts are second nature. Parents also report loving how mobile the work is. Getting out of the house and exploring the community provides a great feeling of freedom.

More grass and the sad state of NATO – especially the UK WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER

Thanks to all those people who have contacted me regarding an award for retired Hall vet Jan Spate. More and more people I speak to are concerned about the long uncut grass. One bloke who lives in Latham recently bought a ride-on mower so he can keep his immediate neighbourhood tidy. He has seen quite a few brown snakes around his area so far this season. Brown snakes are the second most dangerous snakes in the world. Speaking of dangerous, the ever more erratic pronouncements coming out of Russia are a real concern. Whatever idiots thought there would be a peace dividend after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 were sadly mistaken. Likely US President after November 2024 Donald Trump is a problem. His minions are

holding up much-needed funds that will buy weapons and ammo (from US suppliers) for two US allies who certainly pull their weight in terms of defence spending: Ukraine and Israel. Both countries are fighting for their lives – especially Ukraine. Trump is mad not to fully support them. He is on firmer ground regarding his Western European allies. The folly of Western disarmament over the last 30 years is starkly illustrated by the disastrous disarmament of the once formidable British Armed Services. Under that great PM Margaret Thatcher, in 1990 the UK armed services had 320,000 personnel, including an army of 165,000 with 1,200 tanks, a navy with over 50 destroyers and frigates, 28 submarines (12 nuclear, 16 conventional), and three little aircraft carriers, plus an air force of over 700 fighters/fighter bombers. In 2005, under the reasonably competent Tony Blair, it had shrunk to 200,000, including 110,000 in the army with over 400 tanks, 12 nuclear submarines, three little aircraft carriers, about 30 destroyers and frigates, and about 400 fighters and fighter bombers.

Today under the very ordinary Rishi Sunak, the tiny little UK armed forces have about 143,000 personnel, an army of 75,00 and shrinking further, 148 tanks, 16 destroyers and frigates, six nuclear subs, two big aircraft carriers with no dedicated aircraft yet, and an air force of about 150 fighters/fighter bombers and still shrinking. If Mr Trump wants to punish allies not pulling their weight, he need look no further than the UK. The biggest enemy the UK armed forces have had to face since the fall of the Soviet Union has been the British government, especially after the Tories took over in 2010. Unfortunately, it appears the UK Labour Party is even less interested in defence than Mr Sunak’s government. A pathetically weak Britain not only adversely affects NATO, but also brings into question the UK’s ability to contribute to AUKUS and to help build our new Hunter class frigates and nuclear subs. The NATO minimum defence spending target needs to be raised from 2 to 3 per cent of GDP immediately. The USA, Poland and Greece already spend over 3 per cent.

news

If you’re planning on heading out to the Canberra Balloon Spectacular on 9-17 March this year, be sure to look at the waters as well as the skies. As the beloved Canberra GoBoats are being wrapped to support ACT Down Syndrome Association (ACTDSA). “Every morning at sunrise you have this fleet of a dozen GoBoats heading out onto the lake. Then you have 30 or 40 balloons up in the air and about 10,000 people out on the shores of the lake and then another few hundred people on the lake on kayaks and canoes,” says Nick Tyrrell, GoBoat founder. Knowing that the Canberra Balloon Spectacular is their most visible time of year, Mr Tyrrell wanted to use the opportunity to fundraise and raise awareness for the association. “We’ve put the call out for local businesses who want to sponsor a boat, so they have their branding along with Down Syndrome Association along the side of the boat.” Businesses have already signed up to support

the initiative and with two boats left to go, GoBoat is close to their $30,000 goal. “That kind of money would cover the rent on their facilities for more than three years. It takes the pressure off them just having to fund their day-today operation and gives them the flexibility to do more out in the community with those families that are sometimes struggling with how to raise kids with Down syndrome,” says Mr Tyrrell. The ACTDSA aims to build an inclusive community for people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities through lifelong engagement, programs and community initiatives. GoBoat also donates the proceeds of their opening weekend to the association. For the past three years they have supported the association, Mr Tyrrell says every charity is worthwhile, but the ACTDSA was a perfect fit for them. “The families who have a child with Down syndrome, massively disproportionate rates of family breakdown, massively disproportionate rates of

poverty. Even where families stay together one or both of the parents usually has to quit work to care for them.” It isn’t just money that they provide to the association, families with a member with Down syndrome can book a GoBoat and head out free of charge. Two of their employees are also young people with Down syndrome who are paid full wages without the incentive of government programs. “It’s just casual employment but it’s the opportunity for them to earn a dollar, be out getting their independence a little bit more from their family, interacting with people more,” smiles Mr Tyrrell. Ladies of Canberra, we need to talk about ovarian cancer In Australia, five women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer every day and three of those women will die. Each year, February marks ovarian cancer awareness month in hopes of opening the conversation about a cancer that isn’t discussed enough. The five-year survival rate for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer is just 49 percent, making it Australia’s most deadly female cancer. One of the lucky 51 percent, Ann Prunty was 64 years old when she was diagnosed in 2016. Ann showed no symptoms until an after-menopause bleed at work prompted some concern, fortunately, she was working at a medical office and was able to see someone that day. “I now know that a postmenopausal bleed is not a good sign for any woman, but still it’s really not associated with ovarian cancer,” says Ann. The next afternoon Ann was told that she had ovarian carcinoma. Unsure of the seriousness of it at first, she says ovarian cancer is interesting in that you feel well but have a fatal disease. Everyone reacts differently to the news and Ann knew she had to beat it. “I was determined to be one of 51 percent who would survive five years, it’s just who I am. I think other people really struggle and they think it is a death sentence and for some it is.” Undergoing a radical hysterectomy and oophorectomy was no walk in the park but Ann bounced back determined to beat the cancer. “I met my oncologist, as I was 10

clip-clopping into her room in my high heels, looking fabulous with my lipstick on and bright colours, she looked at me and said, ‘How long has it been since you had surgery?’ and I said, ‘Oh, it’s actually three weeks today.” Recognising Ann’s mission to be a good patient, the oncologist wanted to place her on an exercise trial that evaluated the effects of women undergoing chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. Deciding on 18 weekly chemotherapy treatments, the oncologist prepared Ann for the fact that she would lose her hair. The oncologist also mentioned that Ann’s chance of recurrence was high, offering anecdotal evidence that occurrence was commonly 30 months after the end of treatment. “Once I had my check-up, we booked an overseas holiday to celebrate that I was clear and whilst we were away, I now canberradaily.com.au

They were not picked up for another eight months because there is a tumour marker called a CA125 but it’s really unreliable.” As Ann’s markers stayed normal, it took four doctors before any action was taken- a referral to a gastroenterologist for bowel obstruction, even then Ann wasn’t pushed as an urgent case. “By the time I was diagnosed with the recurrent I had two bowel obstructions in the small and large bowel, so again back up the highway for more surgery. I do have to say that it’s not a walk in the park and my recovery did take a lot longer.” It’s BEAT you have to watch out for says Ann; B is for bloating, E is for eating or feeling full after a small meal, A is abdominal or pelvic pain and T is toilet changes in either urination or bowel

Youth handed the power in Happy Meals, Happy Kids Once a place of fun, food, friends, family and laughter, now a derelict place for teens to hang out, could this abandoned eatery be the place that brings about real change? Find out when Happy Meals, Happy Kids comes to The QQueanbeyan Performing Arts Centre on 7-9 March. “A group of young people gather in this dystopian fast-food restaurant trying to finish a school assignment, their task is to disprove government plans to make the Earth into a mining project. As the assignment progresses and they start chatting, it begins to appear like some assignments are a little bit closer to home than they’d like,” says Jade Breen, playwright and director. Debuting at Daramalan College in May last year, Happy Meals, Happy Kids was the first play produced by Sunny Productions, Breen’s theatre

company. From a school assignment to opening the Q the Locals season, Jade is thrilled to be accepted into the program designed to bring local works by local artists into the public eye. “Being accepted into Q the Locals, suddenly my work meant something beyond a score on my year 12 ATAR…Having the opportunity to take charge of a production and put my own essence into it as a young person, I think it’s such a unique experience we don’t often see in the Canberra theatre landscape.” Not having to work to a classroom deadline, Breen was able to expand the story and further flesh out the material taking it from a 30-minute to a 60-minute production. The archetypal characters are instantly recognisable; the teacher’s pet, class clown and popular kids are all there, however, throughout the process, they have been working on creating real

representations of young people. “They’re quite nice, blank canvases. Almost all of my actors have brought this whole new life to them that I never could have expected. During the casting process, it wasn’t a case of ‘Oh my goodness, this is the best actor we could possibly find’, we were looking for real, passionate young people with ideas they wanted to share,” smiles Breen. Canberra loves the Multicultural Festival in rain and shine Rain didn’t dampen Canberra’s enthusiasm for the National Multicultural Festival last weekend, 16- 18 February. The event looks set to match last year’s 380,563 attendance record with official figures yet to be released. The beloved festival returned to the heart of Canberra for three days of food and culture. A spokesperson for ACT Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Mick Gentleman, said “Once again, we’ve seen a wonderful celebration of culture at the National Multicultural Festival with more than 170 cultures coming together over the weekend”. The festival bustled with activity including 300 performance groups, 24 cultural showcases and 270 stall holders. According to the spokesperson, feedback is showing how much festival goers loved the diverse entertainment.

Key highlights include more than 100 cultural food stalls, a silent disco, Mini Nepal and the parade with more than 50 groups and five Scotty dogs. When it comes to boosting the local economy, the spokesperson said while official information isn’t yet available, “we know from last year’s total economic benefit of $20.8 million, the festival delivers strong economic return for the ACT”. What does the festival’s growing popularity tell us about the ACT community? “The popularity of the festival demonstrates Canberra has an inclusive and welcoming community who are eager to learn about traditional celebrations, languages and customs. It also tells us Canberrans have strong support for promoting cultural diversity, fostering community cohesion, and enriching our city.”

Now showing Madame Web (M) In 1973, in the jungles of Peru, a heavily pregnant Constance Webb leads a research team with her partner Ezekiel Sims to discover an unidentified species of spider which may hold healing properties. After being betrayed by Ezekiel, a mysterious indigenous tribe attempts to save Constance with the power of the spider’s bite. In 2003, Constance’s daughter Cassandra (Dakota Johnson) drives an ambulance in Queens, New York, where she soon survives a near-death experience that triggers her clairvoyant abilities. While the Spider-Man character is on lease to Marvel, Sony still needs to produce a Spider-Man related movie every few years to retain the rights to the Spider-Verse characters. In this strange predicament, Sony has opted to release movies based on Spider-Man’s rogues gallery. Whereas Madame Web’s cast,

director and design teams put in an admirable effort, the project, like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), is otherwise completely let down by Sony Corporate Executive meddling, resulting in an embarrassingly flawed script, nonsensical story beats, illogical editing, clunky dialogue and cringe-worthy product placement. Johnson’s Cassandra has a gentle strength and relatability. Despite being a paramedic, Cassandra has no maternal instincts and prefers her own company. Due to the web of fate, however, Cassandra becomes a reluctant protector of three young women who pose a threat to Ezekial in the future. Verdict: Despite the best efforts of the creative talent, and the potential for plenty of spin-offs, the movie is let down by the powers-that-be who are only interested in preserving their golden goose. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net Viewed at Dendy Cinemas

Book talk This week, Jeff Popple reviews three books about murder, love, and an old conspiracy. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Tipping Point by Dinuka McKenzie Harper Collins, $32.99 Dinuka McKenzie has quickly established herself as a major presence in Australian crime fiction circles. Her first novel, The Torrent, was an impressive debut and her second, Taken, was just as good. Now with Tipping Point, she further cements her reputation. Tipping Point returns the reader to the rural town of Esserton in northern New South Wales, and to local police detective Kate Miles, who has to deal with pressures at home and work when her brother becomes a ‘person of interest’ in a local murder. Clever plotting, vivid locations and some nicely formed characters make this an outstanding read. Recommended.

A Life Of Her Own by Ellen Feldman Macmillan, $34.99 Fans of well written historical drama will greatly appreciate A Life Of Her Own by American author Ellen Feldman. Set in the immediate aftermath of World War II, A Life Of Her Own is a lively story about expectations and a woman’s role in society. Recently widowed Fanny Fabricant is forced to reinvent her life in late 1940s New York, as she tries to raise her daughter alone. Going against convention, Fanny gets a job in the exciting field of radio serials and finds herself grappling with familial expectations and societal pressures as she makes her own way in life. Enjoyable.

The Mysterious Case Of Rudolf Diesel by Douglas Brunt Atria, $34.99 In 1913, Rudolf Diesel disappeared off a passenger ship crossing the English Channel and was presumed dead. Rudolf ‘s famous invention of the Diesel engine had brought him great wealth, but also the enmity of two of the most powerful men of the time, John D. Rockefeller and Kaiser Wilhelm II. His death was largely overshadowed by World War I, but the mystery around it lingers. In clear, lucid prose, Brunt brings a new perspective to Deisel’s life and offers a fascinating solution to his death. Mixing history and science with an intriguing true crime mystery, this is a captivating read.

feature Aesthetics & Wellness Collective

‘Rejuran’ arrives at

Aesthetics & Wellness Collective Rachel and Aileen from Aesthetics & Wellness Collective (AWC) in Ainslie bring ‘Rejuran’ to Canberra, the latest in aesthetic medicine utilising Korean salmon testis DNA. Experts have predicted that 2024 will be the year of regenerative aesthetic medicine. It’s an exciting time; rather than focusing on traditional forms of injectables to rejuvenate, the cosmetic industry has been incorporating products to stimulate our own collagen and elastin. The latest innovation in regenerative injectables to hit the Australian market comes from South Korea – and we all know the Koreans do beauty well. It uses polynucleotides derived from a specific strain of wild salmon

– their testis, specifically (yes, you read that right!). These purified DNA fragments are 97 per cent comparable to human DNA. As a raw material, it goes through six precise extraction and refining processes using DNA optimisation technology to become pure DNA containing no fish protein. These salmon are already being used for supplements and skincare using polydeoxyribonucleotide derived from salmon sperm (a story for another time perhaps). The lab has made this sustainable by breeding more of these wild salmon than they are using. This bio-regenerator stimulates our skin on a cellular level, resulting in healthier, firmer, hydrated and more even skin. Skin conditions that would

benefit include sun damaged, thin, rosacea, dull, ageing, enlarged pores, dry and dehydrated. This treatment has been successfully used for improving facial scar tissue, whether it is acne scarring or trauma obtained from injuries. The main point of difference between this and other bio-stimulators is that it can be injected anywhere, including the forehead, eyes and body, the most popular area being the delicate under the eye skin. In clinical studies, 94 per cent of patients showed improvements after three treatments at two-to-three week intervals. Visit Aesthetics & Wellness Collective at the Ainslie shops for your complimentary consultation with a registered health professional. Note: All non-surgical and minimally invasive procedures carry risks and potential complications. Before proceeding, you should ask about alternative options.

Results, risks, and recovery will vary between individual patients and are dependent on several factors. For further information about the results and risks, please contact our clinic directly to speak with a qualified healthcare practitioner. Visit AWC’s site to view the risks and side effects of this treatment.

health+wellbeing Why won’t they ask for help? Helping the men in your life seek help. WITH ASSISTANT PROFESSOR DR VIVIENNE LEWIS, CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST AT UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA

Did you know that one in five men suffer from an anxiety disorder at some stage in their life and that depression occurs in about one in eight men? Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Abuse Disorders are also common. Yet men seeking help, especially older men, is not common. They often suffer in silence or can be seen to be suffering by those around them but won’t seek help. I talk to a lot of parents and partners in my practice as a Clinical Psychologist, about their concerns about their loved ones who are reluctant (or outwardly refuse) to seek help. One of the biggest reasons why it is difficult for some men to ask for help is they do not want to be perceived as a burden to their friends and family. Just like anyone, men can think that they are putting someone out when they ask for help. But the help, from professionals especially, is there for a reason, because there’s a need. Also, 22

22 February 2024

people in your life generally ask if you’re ok or whether they can help because they want to. Not getting help, when others can see you’re struggling, is actually more of a worry for your loved ones. Seeking help from a psychologist for mental health issues can be especially challenging where a person perceives it to be a sign of weakness. But it’s a strong and insightful person who asks for help. We educate our students at school and university about understanding our mental health, how to work on it, and seeking help early. We normalise seeking help for our mental health just like asking for any other type of help. Sometimes men can have difficulty expressing their emotions and worry about verbalising how they feel. That old attitude of ‘manning up’ and ‘getting on with it’ is old school. Help seeking in young males is much more common as it’s talked about more openly at school and in the home. School and university students for example, are strongly encouraged

to seek help and deal with issues as they arise rather than putting worries off. Often there’s a huge relief when someone gets mental health support because you’re heard, listened to, respected, and you learn strategies to make yourself feel better. A few things to consider when trying to help your loved one (whether that be your partner, relative or friend) who doesn’t want help: 1. Listen and validate. Everyone needs to be heard and told it’s ok. 2. Resist the urge to try and fix the problem or give advice. 3. Explore options together about where and who might be best placed to help. 4. Lead by example and take care of yourself and find your own support. Some supports specific for men include Men’s Line on 1300 78 99 78, Beyond Blue, or the Australian Psychological Society. Checking in with your GP is a great start too. canberradaily.com.au

Empowering your to health: debunking weight loss myths with science as your New Year resolution about weight loss? A recent list of the Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions had three of them as: “lose weight”, “exercise more” and “improve my diet”. And you’d think they were related, right? After all, we are always told the key to losing weight is simply “eat less and move more”. Unfortunately, what everyone knows about losing weight is completely wrong. Dr Helena Morris has opened a new medical weight management clinic, Renovo Health, to dispel those myths. Weight management is actually the result of a far more complex system of bodily pathways over which you actually have little to no control. So much of our body runs without our input; think of your heart rate, hair growth, cell repair or the act of sweating. None of these you consciously make

happen, your body does it by itself. Your weight is the same. It is the number at the end of a long chain of complex interactions in bodily systems that we are only just beginning to understand. While we can’t control these systems directly, Dr Morris says we can influence them to produce the body weight and health results we are after. “The best way to achieve lasting weight loss is to set our body up in the right way to produce it for us. That requires a personalised treatment plan for each patient based on their unique condition and circumstances.” Renovo Health focuses on understanding their patients’ complete health picture and using the latest scientific research to determine treatment plans for each patient in an atmosphere of empathy and understanding. “Body weight is the result of bodily systems being out of balance, not a lack of willpower or laziness on the part of the individual,” Dr Morris says. “Cancer comes from the malfunction of the

cell division process, and no one would ever blame a cancer patient for lacking the willpower to divide their cells properly, would they?” The average Australian waits over nine years to ask for medical help after first becoming concerned about their weight. The fear of being judged is a major factor in that delay. Dr Morris hopes that promoting the understanding of how weight works will lead to a reduction in the stigmatisation of weight issues, and more people seeking qualified help instead of relying on influencers and rumour for advice. Renovo Health offers a wide range of treatment options that Dr Morris tailors to each client, providing treatment with understanding and ongoing support. Renovo Health is located at 2/3 Sydney Avenue, Barton. Appointments are available Tuesday to Friday. For more information or to make a booking visit www.renovohealth.au

Cheaper rings, longer marriages? High-profile proposals like Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s are often punctuated by the eye-watering price of the ring. But recent US studies suggest that the price tag doesn’t correlate to a marriage’s staying power, and that $500-$2,000 is the sweet spot for a ring most likely to stay put. “Many couples place undue emphasis on the material value of the engagement ring rather than focusing on the emotional significance of their commitment,” Michael Tiyce from Sydney family law firm, Tiyce & Lawyers says. Here are Mr Tiyce’s top tips for financially navigating your engagement: Open communication: Establishing a shared understanding of your financial picture lays the groundwork for making informed decisions together. Budget: The price of the ring should align with your overall wedding budget. Setting priorities: Identify your priorities as a couple; allocate your

resources accordingly and avoid potential conflicts. Flexibility and adaptability: By staying open-minded and resourceful, you can navigate any financial challenges that come your way. Celebrate meaningfully: Focus on creating meaningful and memorable moments together. Teamwork and support: By working together to manage your finances, you’ll strengthen your bond as a couple and lay the foundation for a lifetime of shared adventures. Negotiating expectations: Be prepared to negotiate and compromise on certain aspects of your engagement plans. Future financial goals: Another reason to avoid unnecessary overspending is the delaying of other important financial milestones, such as home buying or family needs. Now that the sun is in your sign, you’ll find this Pisces season is inspiring and potentially romantic too. You’ll gain the chance this week to be practical about your relationships and especially regarding developments around Saturday’s full moon.

Saturday’s Virgo full moon brings August Virgos a fresh chapter in your personal life and a new daily work or health schedule for September Virgos. Consider looking for more meaning in your daily routine, as you could attain it now.

Thursday’s Venus-Mars conjunction is ideal for get-togethers and to make progress with a group or organisation. This weekend’s full moon brings to an end a work or health routine, enabling you to develop a fresh schedule that suits you more. You’ll appreciate the opportunity to discuss work or long-term decisions with someone relevant, which could take you into fresh territory. You may be drawn to make a commitment. Consider a creative project or personal matter carefully to avoid rash decisions. The Venus-Mars conjunction on Thursday will spotlight a travel, legal, spiritual or self-developmental circumstance, and you’ll gain the chance to invest more deeply in your plans. Saturday’s full moon will spotlight a relationship or domestic matter. Aim to avoid impulsive decisions as you’ll gain the opportunity to put fresh and meaningful arrangements in place as a result, especially concerning shared agreements. Be prepared to consider a realistic approach to a financial situation for the best outcome. The conjunction of Mars and Venus in your partnership zone spells romance. If you’re single you may meet someone a little eccentric and couples may discover aspects of your partner. There will be news or meetings for working Leos.

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20

This will be a good week to be flexible with arrangements at home, to accommodate the movements of someone close, as their news may be unexpected. Saturday’s full moon will promote a fresh approach to a friend or organisation.

Developments regarding health or a new daily schedule will require a flexible approach to ensure developments at home or regarding property are well-managed. A change in your relationship with a friend or organisation, such as at work, will merit focus. You’ll appreciate a get-together or receiving key news, but must avoid feeling that developments must be forced or sped up. Plan ahead and take your time with long-term decisions so that you can manage your career and domestic arrangements adequately.

Financial or personal news may be unexpected or will ask that you approach these areas objectively to avoid making rash decisions or making assumptions. Consider a trip, study, legal matter or your own selfdevelopment in a practical light.

The conjunction of Mars and Venus brings the opportunity to experience a fresh phase in your personal life, especially if you were born end of January. February Aquarians may receive key work or health news. It’s a good week to rearrange finances.

Ideal home for the modern family Denman Prospect 19 Vellacott Street Thoughtfully designed around a sparkling inground pool, this contemporary four-bedroom home in Denman Prospect offers separate wings for the parents and the kids along with beautiful spaces for bringing everyone together. Agents Jess Kercher and Justin Ingram say one of their favourite parts of the property is the outdoor living space “with a beautiful pool being the central focus that the house was designed around”. “The separation of living areas is something we love about the house: parents’ wing, kids’ area – the kids’ rooms being away from main living so adults can chat with friends or watch a movie at night without disturbing the kids,” they say. “The separate lounge and rumpus rooms again allow different activities at the same time.” The agents also love that the kitchen has heaps

of storage, especially with the walk-in pantry, while the laundry has lots of bench space and a very large linen cupboard. And when it comes to location, “the quiet street, privacy and fantastic neighbourly feel is amazing”, as is the ease of getting the kids to and from the nearby (P–10) Evelyn Scott School. The owners can enjoy walking down to the cafe on the weekend for breakfast, the convenience of the Denman Village Shops (with doctors and pharmacy), and several excellent playgrounds within walking distance There are beautiful walks in nature a short distance from home, while the Stromlo Leisure Centre and mountain bike tracks are a short bike ride away, which makes it easier to have an active lifestyle. “It is also a very central location in Canberra –

10 minutes to Belconnen, 15 to the city, 10 to Woden and only 20 to Tuggeranong so nothing feels inconvenient,” the agents say. Call today to arrange an inspection of 19 Vellacott Street. 4 EER Price View Agent Mob Agent Mob
