Around this time most years, I’ll pen a column about the joy of everyday contentment, the kind that emanates from within, enhanced by ordinary experiences and sights. Behold the pleasure in a burnished sunset, flowers in bloom, a willy wagtail fitting across the lawn … there’s heaps of them. The sentiment strikes a chord with some readers; one lovely lady calling me to say it changed her attitude to what was going to be a more subdued festive season than usual. She was now looking forward to experiencing the quiet joy to be found in times of solitude and contemplation, rather than feeling a need to fill every moment with festivities. Not that there’s anything wrong with that if that’s what you have in store.

There is joy ever present in daily events like the awareness of a new day upon waking, listening to birdsong, patting a dog, watering the garden, emptying the dishwasher.

Yes, I’m grateful to have a family to cook for and a house to keep clean.

Reasons to be grateful this week include the ordinary contentment experienced while completing everyday tasks, such as folding freshly sundried laundry, shopping for fresh food and eating eat, commuting to and from work, and the neighbour’s cat ready to be fed and jump in my lap every time I arrive home. Bless.

Summernats Fringe Festival to drive visitors to Braddon Canberra’s famous Summernats car festival will extend its reach to a family-friendly Fringe Festival in Braddon when the event returns to Exhibition Park in Canberra

Andy Lopez, co-owner of Summernats, said the unfortunate cancelling of the 2021 program was a really difficult time so he’s looking forward to bringing back the iconic event.

“Braddon and nights at Summernats have a long and storied history of cruising and shenanigans, and along with the ACT Government and particularly the City Renewal Authority, we are proud to launch the first Summernats Fringe Festival,” Mr Lopez said.

The Fringe will be a managed event on the streets of Braddon on the Friday and Saturday nights, 7-8 January, with Lonsdale Street closing down to host upwards of 200 to 300 cars cruising through the city.

“We hope to see Summernats continuing to spread its footprint in a safe and sustainable way around the ACT. I particularly

want to thank the Braddon Collective, who represent both the residents and the traders, for their support and endorsement of this really exciting activity,” he said.

Summernats’ lifetime native, Scott Abigail, said it’s good to see the iconic Canberra event back on the calendar.

“I’ve been involved with Summernats since I was a kid and it’s good to be back. It’s good to have something to do with your toys so they’re not just sitting in the shed,” Mr Abigail said.

Chief Executive of the City Renewal Authority, Malcolm Snow, said the benefits of the Fringe Festival is about activation of the city centre.

“It’s to drive people here to not only have a good time in a very safe and family-friendly way, but to also support many businesses who we know have been doing it tough for many months,” Mr Snow said.

Interest-free loans for emissions-free electric vehicles Zero hour is coming for the petrol engine. Many Australians would like an electric vehicle – clean, modern, environmentally friendly – but the price tag is too hefty; a new EV will cost you anywhere from $44,000 to a cool $200,000.

Earlier this week, the ACT Government revealed a scheme that puts EVs in closer reach of the average Canberran. Under the Sustainable Household Scheme, zero-interest loans of up to $15,000 are available for new and used zero-emissions vehicles (ZEV).

ACT motorists, it seems, are eager to get behind the wheel of an EV: more than 2,000 people have already registered their interest to buy a vehicle under the scheme.

“This will assist in accelerating the transition away from internal 8

combustion engines into more sustainable forms of public transport,” said Chief Minister Andrew Barr, in his capacity as Minister for Climate Action.

The ACT Government wants to reach net zero by 2045, but 60 per cent of the ACT’s greenhouse gas emissions comes from transport.

“Providing cleaner forms of transport for people to get around this city is vital,” said Shane Rattenbury, ACT Minister for Emissions Reduction.

EVs provide most of Canberrans’ travel requirements, he believes; the average Canberran only drives 30km a day, so the owner of an EV would only need to charge it once a week.

Mr Rattenbury bought himself an EV eight months ago – and he

hasn’t visited a petrol station for a long time.

Earlier this year, the ACT Government introduced zero stamp duty and two years of free registration for people newly registering new and second-hand EVs. In the last 12 months, the number of ZEVs registered in the ACT has doubled (currently 1,562), and Mr Barr expected more frequent doublings to come.

Prices would fall over the next year, and already were, he said; the diversity of models on the market would increase; and many ex-government fleet and privately leased ZEVs would enter the second-hand market in the next three or four years. One can already buy a second-hand EV for $18,000 to $20,000.

“With this interest-free loan, you almost need no money of your own to get a car that’s cheaper to get about town in,” Mr Rattenbury said.

The tipping point would come when there were a lot of EVs between $15,000 and $30,000, brand new, Mr Barr stated. That is still a few years away.

“But this scheme accelerates that tipping point, making it easier for Canberrans who are early adopters of new technology, who see the future, and who want to be part of it.”

The government will launch a tender for 50 public charging stations in Canberra, and wants to require new buildings to have them, too. More incentives will be revealed next year.

Green ‘gerrymander’ set to trash ACT electoral system Just when you thought we were safe from more Green madness – after the bid to set Canberra up as the narco capital of Australia (the decriminalisation of hard drugs legislation), and not allowing 13-year-olds to be charged with criminal offences no matter how bad the offence – we now have two Green government backbenchers introducing into the Assembly a bill to lower the voting age in ACT elections to 16.

Given that the bill to raise the age of criminal responsibility to 14 should be law by July 2022, we could have the following scenario unfold in time for our October 2024 election: Imagine a callow youth called Jack. Jack in August 2022 (next year), in company with three 15-year-old mates commits a home invasion and stabs two innocent people in the process. Due to Shane Rattenbury’s recently passed law, Jack can’t be charged as he is not yet 14. Jack turns 14 one month later, in September 2022. His mates are charged with attempted murder and wounding with intent. Roll forward to October 2024 and young Jack is now aged 16 years and two months.

He can vote! He’s only two years and two months older than when he stabbed two people and was too young to be charged (lacking the capacity to really know what he was doing) but now, in the words of one of the Green members who introduced the bill (CT 2 Dec 21), is suddenly able to be “trusted to take some time out to consider their values to compare candidates and number a few boxes once every four years”. I know a lot of adults who have trouble doing this, let alone 16-year-olds.

Eighteen is an age when most young people are either in Year 12, or have just left school and are starting out in life in a job, Uni or a CIT course.

They can go to a pub and legally drink. They are adults. They can also go to jail with other adults if they commit serious crimes. They can sue someone in court if they are owed money. They can lease a property.

Sixteen-year-olds are largely still at school in Year 10. A very few might have dropped out of school or started an apprenticeship. At 18, most young people are physically young adults. At 16, their bodies and minds are still growing. If the

voting age is changed, then a logical result would be to also allow 16-year-olds to go to adult prisons if they commit serious offences – they will be adults after all!

Let’s call this out for what it is. A cynical attempt to take advantage of 16-year-olds who have yet to develop the life experience and intellectual wherewithal to make well thought out political decisions and who have often been indoctrinated at school to vote Green. Scary stuff!

Mr Barr would be doing not only Canberrans but also his own party a disservice by pandering to the Greens on this one. news Some victims to self-report Having a police officer visit your home following a burglary or an instance of property damage may soon be a thing of the past.

Over the next year, ACT Policing is looking to expand their online reporting system to include property-related crimes in lieu of police attending the scene of the crime. It is expected people will be able to self-report incidents such as vandalism, minor property damage, minor burglaries (where there is little evidentiary material) and other matters.

ACT Chief Police Officer, Neil Gaughan, told ABC Radio Canberra earlier this month officers will be “less responsive to some of the property crime we have been to in the past”.

The shift to online is part of a concerted effort from ACT Policing

to reallocate resources toward more serious matters where there is greater risk of harm or a threat to life.

Australian Federal Police Association (AFPA) president, Alex Caruana, told Canberra Weekly this is “ultimately a resources issue” that’s existed for “some time”.

The AFPA pointed out that the ACT has the lowest number of police officers per 100,000 people in Australia.

Mr Caruana said that to bring that figure in line with NSW, ACT Policing would have to recruit “around 250 officers”.

Minister for Policing and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman said ACT police numbers “cannot easily be compared” to other jurisdictions that cover larger geographical areas.

Mechanics set to reskill

Local wines win gold

As the ACT transitions its diesel and gas-powered fleet to electric vehicles, every bus mechanic in Canberra will learn how to maintain them. The first six bus mechanics will be trained at the CIT next week, and they’re glad to be in at the start.

“It’s a bit of a challenge – but by the same token, it’s exciting as well; it’s something different,” said Stuart Shiell.

“I’m keen for it,” Phil Hart agreed.

He has watched his trade move through hydraulics, pneumatics, and now electronics.

“It’s constantly changing, evolving,” he said. “If you get in early, it’s an easier start.”

The two-day course at the Fyshwick CIT campus will focus on EV safety and maintenance. Electric buses can be dangerous, explains automotive teacher Richard Lindsay.

CIT hasn’t started advertising yet, but already 200 students want to sign up.

To the editor I wholeheartedly agree with Bill Stephaniak’s column, Canberra narco tourism capital of Australia?

(CW 2 December 2021, p10). The fact that the fine for doing 6km over the speed limit attracts a much bigger fine than being caught with drugs is really ludicrous. I would ask why the Greens are pushing the Labor

party into passing this bill to allow 10 hits of drugs to be legal. Is there an ulterior motive?

Also, in regard to the needle exchange program in the prison.

Surely if the prisoners could not get the drugs it would be a good time to wean them off them instead of encouraging them to stay on them.

Child adoptions decline

Pandemic creates ‘dire’ situation The inaugural YWCA Canberra’s 2021 Our Lives: Women in the ACT survey has allowed 1,200 women and non-binary Canberrans to share their harrowing experiences of insecure housing, tenuous economic security, and looming stress and burnout.

Questions about housing, financial security, employment, safety, and mental health were asked in the survey run by the not-for-profit.

YWCA CEO Frances Crimmins said the results reflected what many in the sector have already known.

Access to a modest income, the welfare safety net, and a sufficient amount of personal savings are generally common buffers to support those affected by housing stress and income insecurity, but they’re no longer able to keep pace.

“In 2019, our lives showed us that women were already struggling to manage living costs and unpaid labour as carers and parents. Fast forward to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the situation for many is now dire,” Ms Crimmins said.

There were also further intersections of inequality for women over the age of 45, First Nations women, sexually or gender diverse women, and those with a disability.

“For young women, we saw alarming rates of sexual harassment. This year, 48 per cent of respondents aged 20-24 told us they had been targeted by sexual harassment in the previous 12 months.” Ms Crimmins said.

The number of child adoptions in the ACT and across the country have declined, falling to their lowest levels since the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) records began in 1990-1991.

In the ACT, there are so few adoptions that for confidentially reasons, the data cannot be displayed separately; instead, ACT adoption numbers have been combined with Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

Across the three jurisdictions combined, there were 11 adoptions in 2020-2021, a slight increase on the 10 in 2019-2020.

The last time the ACT’s adoption numbers were included in the AIHW report was in 20182019 when six finalised adoptions were recorded, after six were also recorded in 2017-2018.

The continuing decline compares

to 2016-2017 when 10 adoptions were recorded in the ACT. The Adoptions Australia 20202021 report shows a 21 per cent drop in recorded adoptions this year with 264 being finalised, compared to 334 in 2019-2020.

The figures are less than half those recorded 25 years ago, when there were no fewer than 709 finalised adoptions in 1996-1997.

AIHW spokesperson, Dinesh Indraharan, said the impact of the pandemic on visa applications and travel restrictions may have lowered the number of intercountry adoptions being finalised, but numbers were already declining before then.

To see how Covid-19 has affected adoptions in Australia, AIHW said there needed to be more data over a longer period of time to provide a more comprehensive picture.

A better Canberra for people with disability setting out Australia’s disability policy for the next decade, intended to break down barriers for the 4.4 million Australians with disability.

The Strategy was designed with the disability community and all jurisdictions, including the ACT. “It’s all the states and territories and Commonwealth coming together to say, here’s the framework we want to work within, here are the principles and values we want,” Ms Davidson said.

But Ms Davidson and disability advocates are concerned about other proposals to alter NDIS participants’ plans without their permission – albeit, the Commonwealth says, only in a crisis, or if emergency funding was needed – and to amend rules without formal agreement from states and territories.

Locally, the ACT will soon have a new 10-year whole-of-government disability plan to make Canberra fairer and more inclusive.

In the meantime, funding has been doubled for advocacy services.

Table Tennis ACT launched their Diversity and Inclusion Plan to make the sport more accessible and inclusive for all.

Belco Arts’ ‘Connect Collective’ podcasts feature six Canberrans with disability talking about their hobbies, pastimes, and passions.

The podcasts are available online or by scanning posters around town.

Music for Canberra will hold an I-Day Celebration 2021, sharing in the joy of music through activities, performances, and installations by Canberra artists, including artists with disability.

On Friday 3 December, the ACT marked the International Day of People with Disability (I-Day).

“Let’s celebrate the rights, talents, and experience of Canberrans with disability and the incredible contributions they make to the diversity and richness of our community,” said Emma Davidson, ACT Minister for Disability.

They stood their ground to ensure reforms to the NDIS would not disadvantage people with disabilities; campaigned for priority vaccinations; and advised on the ban on single-use plastics and the future of the public transport network.

But people with disability still cannot come safely out of lockdown, Ms Davidson said; some still have yet to get their third ‘booster’ vaccination, while others have lost paid work or access to services they need.

Advocacy for Inclusion worries people with disability have withdrawn from essential supports and services, and will become more isolated. A lack of appropriate housing and inadequate support payments are also concerns.

It’s widely known the Canberra flag will be flown at the Australian Open (AO) men’s singles, however, next January it will also get a run in the women’s doubles.

Canberra-based tennis player, Monique Adamczak, will take the court in the women’s doubles as she mounts a comeback from an injury suffered at the AO in 2019.

Adamczak decided to return to professional tennis as a “show of strength” after getting through the disruptions of her injury, the pandemic temporarily shutting down the world tour last year, and her move to Canberra one year ago.

The 38-year-old world-ranked tennis star, who turned pro in 1998, is gearing up to compete, spending two to three hours on the court six days a week, while hitting the gym every second day.

“My days are pretty busy,”

Adamczak said, “and still in around that I’ve got kids I’m coaching and mentoring with Tennis ACT, which has been nice, too.

“That’s part of giving back to grassroots.”

Having moved to Canberra a year ago, Adamczak splits her training between Reid Tennis Club, the AIS and the Lyneham Tennis Centre, and has been blown away by the community support.

“Reid has been really good to me,” she smiled, “and they’re obviously looking forward to when I start playing so they can get behind me for the summer.”

Adamczak will pair up at the AO with China’s Han Xinyun. The pair have successfully played together before, making the final of a WTA event in Switzerland in 2019.

Firepit tucker There’s something so laidback about chucking your tinfoil-wrapped food in the flames and enjoying a beer with mates. Whether you have a hole in the ground or a fancy iron pit, these recipes can work for you.

Sweet potatoes in jackets with feta crème Serves 4 4 sweet potatoes, about 300g each 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp sea salt 1 large red chilli, finely chopped, 4 dill sprigs Feta crème 300g feta, coarsely grated or crumbled 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 Tbsp finely chopped dill 3 Tbsp olive oil 2 Tbsp milk To make the feta crème, put the feta, garlic, and dill in a food processor. Mix for about 10 seconds, until well combined. With the motor running, add the oil, then the milk, to make a smooth and creamy sauce. Transfer to a bowl

and refrigerate until ready to use.

Sit each of the sweet potatoes in the centre of a sheet of foil. Rub with oil and sprinkle with sea salt. Wrap in the foil to firmly enclose.

Your firepit is ready to cook on after about 2 hours of burning, when the timber is charcoal black, has transformed into red hot coals about the size of golf balls, and the smoke has all but subsided. To test for heat, you should not be able to hold the palm of your hand 5–10 cm above the grill for more than 2–3 seconds.

Replace the grill over the firepit and give it around 10 minutes to heat up.

Sit the sweet potatoes on the firepit grill and cook for 45–60 minutes, until they can easily be pierced with a skewer. Avoid unwrapping the foil before they are cooked, or the heat will escape.

To serve, unwrap the sweet potatoes and make a deep cut down the centre of each. Spoon the feta crème into the potatoes and top with chopped chilli, a sprig of dill and some ground black pepper.

Festive turkey Serves 4 1 boneless turkey breast roll, about 1.6kg, skin on 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 Tbsp sea salt 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 1 small handful toasted flaked almonds Salsa verde 1 bunch flat-leaf (Italian) parsley, chopped 24 basil leaves 2 anchovies, chopped 2 tsp salted capers, rinsed and drained ½ cup (125ml) olive oil 1 Tbsp lemon juice Remove any wrapping the turkey came in. Rub the skin all over with the oil and sit on a chopping board. Sprinkle with the salt and pepper. Leave for 1 hour prior to cooking.

Your firepit is ready to cook on after about 2 hours of burning, when the timber is charcoal black. Test for heat with the same method as the potatoes. Give the grill 10 minutes to heat up.

Put the turkey on the firepit, skin side down. Cook for 8–10 minutes, until the skin is nicely browned all over. Move the turkey around if the skin is starting to catch and burn. Turn over and cook for a further 10 minutes.

Transfer the turkey to a disposable aluminium baking tray. Put another tray on top and fold the edges together to enclose the turkey. Sit the tray on the side of the firepit grill, where it isn’t too hot, and cook for 1 hour 15 minutes.

After 1 hour, have a peek inside and look at the underside of the turkey. If it is starting to catch or brown too much, move the tray to the furthest edge of the firepit, so it retains heat and continues to cook without burning. Transfer to a chopping board and rest for 45 minutes.

Make the salsa verde while the turkey is resting. Put the parsley in a food processor with the basil, anchovies, and capers. Process for a few seconds to finely chop. With the motor running, add the olive oil until well combined.

Transfer to a bowl and stir in the lemon juice. Taste for seasoning.

Carve the turkey and arrange on a serving plate. Spoon salsa verde over the top and scatter with almonds to serve. canberraweekly.com.au

Trevor Dickinson is commemorating a decade of drawing Canberra with a new publication, The Book of Canberra, and an exhibition at Lyneham’s The Front café.

Trevor Dickinson celebrates a decade of drawing Canberra To commemorate a decade of capturing Canberra in a way only he can, acclaimed artist Trevor Dickinson is marking the milestone with a new book, The Book of Canberra, and a companion exhibition.

His new book is a premium quality hardcover publication featuring “pretty well every single drawing” of Canberra he has completed, over 300 works.

“I see my work as being an ongoing portrait,” Dickinson said. “It’s like a way of collating what I’ve got now after 10 years and thinking ‘right, where am I going?’.

“It’s almost like a bit of a full stop in what I’ve done before I move on to the next stage.”

What started out as a modest series of Canberra bus shelter prints during a six-week residency at Megalo Print Studio in 2012 has grown into a whole industry of Canberriana Dickinson has carved out for himself.

His bus shelter series has proven widely popular, with mugs, prints, puzzles and books in the homes of thousands of Canberrans near and far.

Additionally, he’s received commissions from Lonsdale Street Roasters, Westfield Woden, and, quite synergistically, Transport Canberra, to name a few.

“I do really like Canberra, and Canberra’s responded to my work a lot,” he said.

His work has resonated here due to Dickinson’s ability to capture the things we locals take for granted; the odd, unusual, and unique landmarks around town that it so often takes an outsider to truly appreciate.

is coming in, and it’s kind of looking at the real Canberra, the Canberra people live in.

“That’s what I aim to do, is represent the city people live in and people see.”

Created in the ilk of last year’s The Book of Newcastle and Beautiful Bus Shelters of Canberra, Dickinson said he has a longstanding affinity for the form of a book.

“I’ve always done the zines,” he said. “I like work you can hold and look at.”

Inspired by the picture-heavy, fun, and random books from Monty Python and The Goodies of his childhood in the UK town of Swindon, Dickinson said The Book of Canberra is a “lively portrait” of his work here.

“You’d go through it, and you just don’t know what’s on the next page,” he said.

“So, I’ve written the book as kind of lively so as you go through it, things pop up as you wouldn’t expect.”

While light on text, the gorgeous images are accompanied by a deeply personal account of Dickinson’s connection to Canberra that he does while steering clear of anything saccharine or sentimental.

“I just wanted it to be an entertaining book,” he said. “I wanted to make it accessible without dumbing down and without too much art speak.”

‘A DIY Paris salon show feel’

The book’s companion exhibition, titled Fresh Canberra Classics – New Works by Trevor Dickinson, is on show at Lyneham’s Front Café until 3 January.

It’s a retrospective of works Dickinson has completed in the 10 years since that fortuitous first

trip to Canberra in early 2012.

“When I applied, I hoped Canberra would be an ongoing drawing project, and so far, it’s turned out that way,” he said.

Featuring works harking all the way back to his first time in town, the exhibition focuses predominantly on newer pieces created for the book.

It includes his well-known and now iconic Clem Cummings bus shelters illustrations, along with other local landmarks like roadside signs, landmarks and institutions churches public art and more, all captured in his distinct style.

The works are presented as paste-ups in on boards in different sizes and scales. To give them a “19th century DIY Paris salon show” feel, Dickinson added the fanciest digital gilded frames he could find.

“These are handmade work done in the technique of street art, and I wanted that quality about it.

“It’s just much more immediate,” he said. “In a way, they’re more objects than framed pictures.”

Also visible is the progression of Dickinson as an artist. He started out using no more than eight colours due to his work all being screen printed.

His process has always involved drawing the landscapes by hand on paper before scanning them and colouring digitally.

“Ten years later and my techniques have got a lot more sophisticated,” he said. “The drawings probably have the same kind of feel, but if you look closer, there’s a lot more going on in the colours.”

Jess Maree finds her rhythm

“It didn’t feel real,” said Jess Maree, after she was crowned winner of Can Give Day’s ACTwide singing competition earlier this year. This was a huge and much-needed win.

Few would understand how music was a family affair for Jess, though some may recall the family act starring in a 2007 production of High School Musical.

“My mum played Ms Darbus, my dad played Coach Bolton, and I was Kelsey. All of us

together, playing two weeks of shows in a giant circus tent in Woden Park.

“It was one of the weirdest but also most amazing experiences of my life,” she laughed.

Jess would go on to study music at both CIT and ANU. Her father couldn’t have been prouder. “Music was a really big passion of his.

I think he was always glad that I decided to go down this path too.”

Unfortunately, just as Jess’ talent was starting to be recognised, her life was thrown off-key by a devastating decline in her father’s health.

“He’d been unwell for a long time, but the last eight years were particularly bad.

“It was hard to get my feet grounded for any length of time. Things would kind of start to happen, then my personal life would be derailed, and my music went on the back burner.”

She began vocal coaching in 2016, teaching music to children as she searched for her own rhythm.

Her father passed away in March.

money for the Canberra Hospital Foundation as an opportunity close to her heart.

She sang a self-composed pop ballad, Holes in the canvas.

“It’s set in the snow, and this person who has lost someone is trying to find meaning in their own life, trying to just get back to normal.

The stages that you go through when you’re grieving,” she smiled, misty-eyed.

“The holes in the canvas are them walking in the snow, writing messages and hoping they’ll see them from heaven.”

The judges were in awe of her powerful voice, and raw emotion.

Moving forward under the mentorship of judge Leo Sayer, with a spot waiting for her in the line-up of 2022’s Canberra Hospital Foundation concert, Jess imagines what her dad would think of her getting her rhythm back. “It sucks, so much, that he isn’t here, but I think he would be very proud.”

Her message to others on a shared path is to keep going. “If it makes you happy, just keep going.”

Now showing Dune (M) On an ocean planet thousands of years into the future, the popular Duke Leto of House Atreides (Oscar Isaac) is reassigned by the nervous Emperor to replace the brutal House Harkonnen as rulers of the desert planet Arrakis A.K.A ‘Dune’. However, the Harkonnens have other plans.

Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel is the grandfather of modern sci-fi, thanks also to Alejandro Jodorowsky’s massive, albeit failed, effort in adapting Dune to the big screen. The Star Wars franchise would not exist if it was not for Dune; warring families, messianic characters, desert/ocean planets and the use of the force. It is ironic

that David Lynch’s 1984 effort was derailed in the aftermath of Star Wars, with the Dune property labelled ‘unfilmable’ since.

Learning from Lynch’s failure, Denis Villeneuve has adapted only the first part of the story, with the movie’s generous run-time focusing on the characters and the planet Dune’s fraught political history, geography, and importance; this universe’s only source of the “spice”, a rare substance needed for interstellar space travel.

Like Villeneuve’s sequel to Blade Runner, the landscapes are sweeping and the technology dwarfing. The design is minimalistic and tasteful, with many elements of the book taking a backseat to the characters and story.

Verdict: A restrained and measured adaptation that may underwhelm newcomers as the source material has been ironically over-mined for decades. 3.5 stars.

NFSA and NLA to expand digital collections The National Film and Sound Archive and National Library of Australia will share in $47 million of federal funding to further their efforts maintaining and growing their digitised collections.

The Archive will receive $41.9 million to digitise their extensive audio-visual collection, while $5.7 million will go toward the maintenance and development of the Library’s Trove website.

The funding will allow the Archive to digitise and preserve around 240,000 known at-risk audio-visual collection items held by these institutions.

Archive CEO, Patrick McIntyre, said the boost in funding will allow them to get ahead of the risks of obsolete playback equipment and deteriorating tape formats.

Jacqui Uhlmann, said decades of news and popular culture remain in analogue formats, and the NFSA is working hard to digitise it all.

“This is a major investment in our future, ensuring we can save thousands of hours of radio, television and film, before it becomes unplayable,” she said.

The funding of $5.7 million to the Library will further support Trove operations to 30 June 2023, and allow for technical enhancements to ensure the website’s security and reliability.

Trove, launched in 2009, provides online access to more than 6 billion items of Australian and online resources from the Library’s own digital collections and of the many hundreds of partnering organisations.

It now receives approximately 30 million visits each year.

The fi rst ever Australia-based study to examine thyroid cancer risk, found one in five future thyroid cancers are linked to excess weight.

The study, published in the International Journal of Cancer and led by UNSW’s Dr Maarit Laaksonen, discovered obesity has doubled in Australia in the last 20 years, and as a result, overweight and obesity will be associated with 10,000 thyroid cancers in the next decade. Presently, 75 per cent of Australian men and 60 per cent of Australian women are overweight or obese. Dr Laaksonen said while thyroid cancer is currently two to three times more common in women, this can be expected to change in the upcoming decade, likely due to the higher rates of obesity in men.

For both sexes, avoiding excess weight, should be a priority for thyroid cancer prevention.

You’ll need: Bamboo garden screen Painting tape Scissors Large paint brush Paint (at least three colours for the tree, star, and baubles)

Step 1: Using painting tape, create a triangle on the garden screen and cut out the shape of the tree.

Step 2: Pull together the wires at the top of the garden screen to create a hook for the tree to hang from.

Step 3: Use the large brush to paint the front of the tree your chosen colour and let dry.

Step 4: Cut out circles from the cardboard for the baubles and a star for the top of the tree.

Step 5: Paint the baubles and star with your chosen colours.

Step 6: On the back of the star, use a ruler and butter knife to score an indent from each point straight down. Fold along the scorings to create dimension in the star.

Step 7: Once everything is dry, use wire to hang baubles and blu-tac to stick the star onto the tree.

Step 8: Zigzag the fairy lights onto the tree.

Do-it-yourself and upcycling queen, Geneva Vanderzeil, is an artistic genius when it comes to home projects and crafty decorations.

After collaborating with Bunnings to create her own take on the traditional Christmas tree, Geneva shares with Canberra Weekly how she gets inspired for her DIY projects and what she’s looking forward to these holidays.

“To find my DIY ideas, I love looking online, in magazines and in old craft books,” Geneva says.

With Christmas just around the corner, it’s that time of year to dust off the decorations and make your home as festive as you like – and her top tip for this is to just get creative!

“I’m all about getting creative in my space. I love to make, update and refresh things I have around me, it’s such a great time to get creative!” she says.

The Bunnings Christmas tree is one of Geneva’s creations and she’s delighted with how the finished product turned out.

“I came from an environmentally minded family, so we were into making our own natural decorations and hand making gifts.

I carry that sentiment to this day!” she smiles.

“I can’t wait to get together with my extended family, and then have some downtime with our new little family of four – we have a sixmonth-old baby. Seeing Christmas through my kids’ eyes is such a joy!”

sustainable this Christmas, Geneva has some top tips to help you get into the DIY and upcycling groove.

“This time of year is so great for taking some time out to make something, and there are so many things, big and small you can do.

Little gifts are a great place to start, along with decorations and wrapping paper. DIYing things for your tablesape is also very fun and effective,” she says.

“I definitely try to make presents where I can, I find that it’s so easy to personalise little items – an updated notebook or personalised bottle of olive oil is such a personal and memorable gift.”

New build-to-rent development City Hill gains $380M office at Denman Prospect blocks Molonglo Valley will see a new affordable housing initative, built and designed solely for Canberran renters, by Capital Estate Developments in partnership with Jega.

‘The Borough’ in Denman Prospect will be developed over three stages and 370 of the dwellings will be built on the eastern side of Holborow Avenue in Denman North, while 330 units will be built further up the hill.

Designed by four different architects, DNA, AMC, Oztal, and DKO, the dwellings will be close to amenities and public transport, there will be communal spaces for the residents to enjoy and exclusive residents-only areas.

Provisions for temporary businesses including pop-up food trucks, entertainment and community services will also be included in the multi-use precinct.

It is hoped the first stages will be completed in early 2024, and all of Denman North will continue to have mandatory solar panels on every residential dwelling.

Capital Estate Development’s managing director, Stephen Byron, said part of the success of Denman is the affordable housing aspect.

“It was very important to make sure a portion of the houses are affordable. Already 20 per cent of the homes in Denman, 400 out of the 2000, meet the ACT Government’s affordability threshold,” Mr Byron said.

“We see that there’s another part of the market that is being missed and that’s affordable rentals – people who are not yet ready or can’t afford to own their own home but who could afford to rent it, and so the affordability rentals will be 20 per cent below the market rent and they’ll be able to have long term leases for one, two, four or five years.”

He said the precinct is designed with the future in mind, and will incorporate solar panels, EV charging stations, drone landing zones, grey water management, sustainable building materials, and community gardens.

“It’s going to be state of the art and it’s going to think about the way in which people live and the way we embrace technology and our environmentally sustainable future,” Mr Byron said.

responsible developer that’s committed to helping our community” which is why they’ve made a percentage of the rentals affordable.

“Across the whole suburb, 20 per cent of the rentals are affordable and that’s the highest of any suburb that’s ever been developed in Canberra,” he said.

“Other suburbs, like Whitlam or Lawson, they sometimes aspire for chunks of them to be 20 per cent, but we’ve got 20 per cent across the whole of Denman Prospect.”

ACT Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Housing and Suburban Development, Yvette Berry, said she was excited to hear about the project.

“As we’ve seen Denman Prospect grow, Denman Prospect and the Capital Estate Group have been looking at different and innovational ways to deliver housing for people regardless of their background so that everybody can have a great place to live,” Ms Berry said.

“I think affordable rental projects like this one are something new for us here in the ACT, but we want to be innovative, and we need to be.

The last couple of years have certainly turned housing development, affordable or otherwise, completely on its head and so we need to think differently about how we deliver homes for everyone.”

Director of Project Delivery at Denman Prospect, Nick McDonald Crowley, said he knew they needed to address housing affordability and the build-to-rent scheme for this new housing initative has come off the back of concepts used at Kingsborough in Kingston.

Set to be completed in the second half of 2023, a new $380 million commercial office complex will be developed by Morris Property Group and designed by local architects Guida Moseley Brown.

The complex will rise six levels at Vernon Circle, and the ground floor will be home to a range of cafés and retail outlets. A three-level carpark being built under the site is set to open next year.

Developed across two buildings, the 34,000sqm of space will be the first building for Morris Property Group’s City Hill parkland development of the wider Section 100 site.

Morris Property Group director, Barry Morris, said One City Hill meets the needs of a contemporary workforce with office accommodation standards and “striking architecture”.

“The building has been designed with the future workforce in mind, focusing on sustainability, Covid-safe building design, and providing spaces to facilitate the work-life balance,” Mr Morris said.

New loan commitments see investors return New property investor loan commitments rose by 1.1 per cent in October 2021 (seasonally adjusted), according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) report released on 2 December.

Investment loans have risen to near record levels, and Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) president, Adrian Kelly, said it’s positive news to see mum and dad investors returning to the market.

The value of new loan commitments for investor housing, according to the ABS, has been on the rise for 12 consecutive months hitting a high of $9.7 billion in October.

This is the highest level for new loan commitments since the previous all-time highest record in April 2015.
