CEO MESSAGE

DEAR MEMBER We’ve hosted some great shows and dinners over the last year. Our schedule over the next few months is even better! We’ve got Tommy Fleming, Blood, Sweat and Tears, The Animals, and the Bay City Rollers! Add in tributes to Elvis, The Beach Boys, Roy Orbison, and Neil Diamond and that’s a great line up of acts. Our dinners are fabulous too, with our Chef’s Signature Dinner the headline act, supported by some great wine, beer, and truffle dinners across our venues, including the launch of our ‘Stromlo Series’ of dinners. You’ll find details of all the events in this magazine.

2017 WEDDING EXPO

If you’ve got StarReward points building up, be sure to redeem them during our 7:1 redemption period which runs for seven weeks, commencing 1 March. It’s a great deal, and points can be redeemed at all our venues including Southern X Stromlo.

This Easter, Snapper on the Lake will open from 11am to 8pm, and I’m pleased that the Yacht Club restaurant will also be open on Good Friday for a special lunch seafood buffet. All other Southern Cross Club venues will be closed on Good Friday, but will trade their usual hours for the rest of the Easter long weekend.

Come and meet our team and let us help you plan your perfect wedding.

After Easter, keep an eye out for our Diamonds are Trumps promotion where one lucky member will win $100,000 cash. It’s our biggest giveaway ever and every member can enter. See the back cover for more details. Finally, I hope your footy team has a cracking start to the season, and I look forward to seeing you around our venues. Regards

MARYMEAD TURNS 50 The Canberra Southern Cross Club is proud to support such an important local charity as Marymead, from as far back as the Club’s inception in 1972. Our strong relationship continues today with Marymead being one of our leading Community Partners in the Club’s Community Rewards Program. Originally established as a residential care facility for children and families in temporary crisis, Marymead now provides a range of family support services for children, young people and their families, and now has offices in regional areas, as well as at the original Narrabundah site, and in Watson.

Many of our Members are sure to have had some connection to Marymead. You may have walked in the 20 mile Walkathon, or perhaps you’ve attended a Marymead event, or utilised one of their services. Whatever the connection, we encourage you to attend Marymead’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. We congratulate Marymead on reaching this important milestone.

This year, Jamison’s Executive Chef Iain McKinnon is responsible for the main course.

The fine food will be matched with wines from Yarra Burn, Houghton, Bay of Fires, Hardy’s and Peter Lehmann.

“The secret to any dish is using fresh ingredients,” said Iain. “This year, I will combine the five elements of taste: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and spicy to enhance this beautiful cut of Shorthorn eye fillet of beef.

We also welcome Origin Energy and Chemworks as new presenting partners, joining Bidvest, Elite Event Technology, Accolade Wines and A Touch of Elegance.

THIS IS OUR FAMILY COMMUNITY REWARDS

Here’s how our Community Partners are using the funds you provide them through the Community Rewards Program.

GARRAN SCOUT GROUP Building better children is just one of the benefits Canberra Southern Cross Club members can help Garran Scouts achieve, through the club’s Community Rewards Program. Garran Scout Group Leader, Pam Andrew said the Community Rewards program meant the entire community could be involved in the Scouting movement.

“I love the thought of the Canberra Southern Cross Club and the Community Rewards Program joining forces with us as it means the whole of Canberra can get behind us, from those members supporting that fundraising initiative, to Scout leaders like myself, the parents who volunteer and the children who are involved,” she said. Ms Andrew said the funds donated would go towards renovating the bathroom at the group’s Kitchener Street hall, as well as providing extra camping equipment and subsidising the cost of jamborees and cuborees.

TAYLOR PRIMARY SCHOOL This financial year Taylor Primary School P&C is on track to receive a $1,200 donation from the Community Rewards program. Parents and Citizens vice president Samantha Hayes said the funds raised would go towards the popular school veggie garden, school excursions, the Grade 6 graduation and the bicycle program. “The students just love the veggie patch! They pop down there to cut some chives, 10

or nibble on some tomatoes,” she said. “We really appreciate the support from the club and it’s so nice for the children to look forward to going to school, and as a parent I feel happier and more confident when I know my children feel good about going to school,” Hayes said.
