Dear Members,

Welcome to our Autumn / Winter Members Magazine. It’s hard to believe that here we are, almost a quarter of the way through 2024!

The Club is very proud of our team. Our staff are the backbone of our hospitality and health and wellness venues, and we like to recognise their outstanding contributions whenever we can. Read more about our 2023 Employee of the Year winners on page 8.

2024 ushers in a significant year in capital investment across our venues, with an early focus on Tuggeranong. The Tuggeranong refurbishment will be welcome news for Members, and we look forward to delivering a wonderful venue. With an expected commencement in March, Members will be kept updated as works progress, more detail about the exciting changes can be found on page 13.

Our themed dinners, events and entertainment continue across the venues in 2024. We have a wonderful array of dining events that are sure to please all palates, I am particularly looking forward to the Feast of Italy

in March at Woden, Tuggeranong and Jamison where our chefs, led by our General Manager Food and Beverage Anurag Gautam, have created some wonderful dishes for members to enjoy. The weather is traditionally wonderful in March so make the most of it and come on down to Canberra’s best lakeside dining destination and enjoy Mexican month, at Snapper & Co.

Our Health and Wellness teams have also been busy, with the refurbishment at Anytime Fitness Jamison now complete. This really is a wonderful gym with state-of-the-art facilities and a great Club Manager in Jack Sutton. If you reside north side and are looking to join a gym, I encourage you to drop by and see Jack. My team and I wish all members the best for 2024. We all look forward to welcoming you into your venues!

An egg-cellent Easter awaits at your local Club

There’s something for every bunny at the Canberra Southern Cross Club this Easter long weekend, with plenty of delicious ways to mark the occasion with friends and family at Jamison, Woden and Yacht Club.

At our Staff Christmas Party on 17 December we announced our Employee of the Year. This time, we changed things a little bit and awarded an Employee of the Year per venue, culminating in a Group Employee of the Year.

New days for Kids Eat Free and Burger Bunanza

From March, Kids Eat Free will take place on Wednesdays and our popular Burger Bunanza will take place on Thursdays at our Woden, Tuggeranong and Jamison Clubs.

That means on Wednesdays, buy one main meal (minimum value $23) between 11am and 9pm and receive one kid’s main meal from the kid’s menu for lunch or dinner for a child 12 years old or under for free!

Meanwhile, on Thursdays, score a gourmet burger and a drink for just $20. Just another way you can get more for less at our Clubs.

What do you like doing outside of work?

I love to fly. I am currently studying for my helicopter license and love the freedom of being in the air.

Lifeline Southside Bookfair 2024

The Lifeline Bookfair is always a highlight of our Tuggeranong Club’s calendar, and 2024 will be no exception, with the next blockbuster event held in our Tuggeranong Southern Cross Stadium from 28 – 30 June.

Featuring an astonishing array of titles – from fiction to nonfiction, records, collectables, kids' books, magazines and foreign language books – it’s an event for a great cause that the entire family will love.

The event has been held at the Stadium for six years now, with all proceeds going towards keeping Lifeline Canberra’s vital crisis support line in operation.

Five minutes with Courtney Nickerson, Venue Manager

What is your favourite part of your job? My favourite part of the role is no day is the same. Every day offers new challenges. I started at CSCC in 2015 as a change desk attendant to supervisor to Gaming Services Manager to Gaming and Events Services Manager, now Venue Manager. It has been a long and amazing road and I have loved it all.

What is your favourite thing to order at your Club?

Every morning I have a vanilla cappuccino. I also love the chicken schnitzel sandwich.

What do you like doing outside of work? I have four young children so anything to keep them busy and burn off energy is good for me. Also love hanging and eating with friends and family.

Tuggeranong Renovation Good things on the way

We have a substantial update for our Members!

You may have noticed a few people in high vis with clipboards running around the Club in the past few months.

Excitingly, this means we are getting very close to kicking off the much-anticipated refurbishment of your favourite Club in the Valley. We receive lots of feedback that the Club needs some love and we have plenty of love on the way.

Works are estimated to take 36 weeks and we will complete the job in a number of stages to remain open as much as we can. We thank you for your patience while we undertake these works.

Love Jazz? Get down to Jamison to hear the best of the Canberra Jazz Club. Hosting a monthly Jazz band at the Jamison venue since 2011, they have no plans on slowing down anytime soon! With plenty of shows planned for the coming year, keep an eye on our socials page, and in venue for the monthly poster to find out who will be playing each month.

Celebrating 20 years with Dominic Dominic Duke's 20-year journey at the Canberra Southern Cross Club is truly inspiring. At 48, with special needs, he is a valued staff member, showcasing his commitment by taking the No. 32 bus daily, working from 9am to 12pm and engaging in a variety of tasks.

Dominic's story began in 2004 at the Yamba Sports Club, and when it was closed, he moved to our Jamison venue. Dominic supports the venue by helping with different tasks; he assists at the bar with its daily setup, polishes glasses, and sometimes helps Mary at Reception. His genuine love for his job and connections with colleagues and customers make him an integral part of the Jamison community, recognised and cherished by all. Everyone knows his name. His favourite part of working here are the Christmas parties, having joyfully attended 19 already.

March – Mexican Month!

Olé! March is Mexican Month, where you can check out daily blackboard specials for a delicious range of tacos and themed drinks (yes, there will be Coronas, Margaritas and Jarritos soft drinks!). The Snapper courtyard will also be decorated so make sure to stop by!

Anytime Fitness Jamison Refresh

Anytime Fitness Jamison reopened in December 2023 after a significant refresh and the feedback has been nothing but positive.

The new look was unveiled at a celebratory Open Day on 11 December, which featured a live DJ as well as competitions and prizes and allowed Members to invite friends and family to experience the refreshed Club for themselves.

The new-look Club features unique design elements, including backlit logos in the member's lobby and functional spaces – the first Anytime Fitness Club in Canberra to do so.

Learn to swim at Stellar from six months

Did you know that Stellar Swim offers classes to children from six months of age? Ensuring your little ones build confidence in the water and learn foundation water survival skills, these classes are tailored to kids from six months to three years of age. Not only do these classes aid very young babies in retaining their reflexes, but they’re a great way for babies and parents to bond and socialise with families of the same age.

Stellar Swim offers swimming lessons year-round, so you can ensure your child’s confidence will continue to grow well after summer ends.

Five minutes with Victoria Flood, Stellar Pool Manager

What is your favourite part of your job?

There’s so much to love about my role but the best part is definitely getting to work with the fantastic team we have at Stellar. Everyone is so friendly which makes working here so fun!

What is your favourite thing to order when you visit your local Club?

Definitely the roasted pumpkin and feta salad – usually followed by a battered fish – at Snapper & Co.

What do you like doing outside of work?

Reading (although lately all I seem to read is textbooks!) and spending time outdoors, usually walking and swimming.

Five minutes with Jack Sutton, Club Manager at Anytime Fitness Jamison

What is your favourite part of your job?

I love interacting with and getting to know all the Members. We have a great community out in Jamison, and it is always nice to be around good positive people who all want to better themselves.

What challenges do you enjoy tackling in this role?

It's not so much a challenge, but I love taking pride in the gym each day and making sure I can maintain it to be in the best condition for our Members.

What do you like doing outside of work?

I love all sports! I still play local cricket, and I never miss a game of footy. I am originally from Adelaide, so I am a die-hard Crows supporter in the AFL and I love supporting the Raiders in the NRL! My Monday mornings are usually spent watching the NFL, especially my beloved LA Rams!

Community Giving Event and Volunteer of the Year

Our Annual Community Giving Event was a real highlight of 2023, with Katie McNamara awarded 2023 Volunteer of the Year.

Katie is a young volunteer with a huge role. The volunteer president of Vinnies on Campus, a volunteer group facilitated by efforts of mostly university student volunteers, Katie coordinates these

volunteers and several programs which are run to benefit the community. These include a home visits program that supports people in the suburbs around ANU that are doing it tough.

ACT Scrabble Championship

The ACT Scrabble Championship Tournament was held on 18-19 November 2023. This was the first occasion on which the Club used its new competition clocks which were purchased through the Southern Cross Club’s Community Rewards Program.
