Dear Members Turning fifty deserves a big celebration and that’s exactly what we’ll be doing over the next three months! So much has changed in the fifty years of the Canberra Southern Cross Club, but one thing that hasn’t changed over time is our core values. These are: • we care for our community and our people, • we provide good times and good memories, • we show leadership and teamwork, and • we act with integrity and respect. Our team is proud of what the Canberra Southern Cross Club has already achieved in providing for the Canberra community, and we are optimistic about what our future holds. In this edition of the magazine, we share how you can celebrate the Club’s Golden Anniversary. There are special event dinners, pricing 'rollbacks' on some of our most loved meals, anniversary drinks made in collaboration with our local partners, life memberships, and the Golden Ticket promotion with over $100,000 in cash and prizes, including the $50,000 grand prize. With so much going on it’s hard for some of our regular activities to shine, but of special note are the announcement of a three year Community Key Partnership with our great friends at Canberra Yacht Club.

The Canberra Yacht Club has been around since 1959 and our Community Key Partnership will be directed towards the Yacht Club’s Sailability and Buoyed Up programs which provide the opportunity to many in our community that may not otherwise experience the joy of sailing. We’re also excited to help the amazing Vinnies Night Patrol service celebrate their 21st birthday. They’ve helped thousands of Canberrans and we’ve been proud to be with them through that journey, providing sandwiches and hot meals 364 days a year for the past two decades. You can help celebrate their 21st birthday and raise extra funds for them by buying a Magic Pudding during August. One dollar from every pudding sold will go to the Night Patrol, in addition to the $30,000+ in benefits we provide each year. If you’ve enjoyed too many Magic Puddings, do consider joining one of our gyms. There are some great deals on offer, detailed on page 19 of this magazine. Celebrating fifty years Fifty Years Young Tuesday 22 August 1972 saw the beginning of a new adventure as the Canberra Southern Cross Club first opened its doors. This year, we celebrate fifty years of the Canberra Southern Cross Club. We're very proud of our achievements and what we have delivered for the Canberra community. In 1972, Canberra had not experienced a place to gather like the Canberra Southern Cross Club – a place to meet that was family friendly, served a good quality sit-down meal and had a walk-up bar – all in a relaxed, welcoming and community centric environment. Commencing operations in a small, one-level building, anything that was modest about the initial concept was soon overwhelmed by demand. 4
From Woden, the Canberra Southern Cross Club offering grew across the capital, initially with the Bowling Club at Yamba in the late 80s, a merger with the Yacht Club in Yarralumla in 1997, a new construction at Tuggeranong in 1998, acquiring ownership of Wests at Jamison in 2007, and the opening of Stellar Canberra in 2018. Over the years, the Club has catered for every age group, and there are not too many Canberrans without some affiliation to the Club. Founding board member, Adrian Caddy summed this up perfectly when asked why the Club had so successfully stood the test of time.

“What we were achieving as a Club and for the community was gaining great attention and commendation. In particular, the ACT Government were extremely supportive of the Club's approach and contributions, both in sporting and recreation, food, gaming, and entertainment.” As we celebrate the last fifty years, we look forward to welcoming you to the Club for another golden fifty years. 5

We’ve always placed a strong focus on serving high quality meals at value prices. Our special Recipe for Success dinners reflect this celebration of excellence. Riesling and Shiraz with Lake George Winery
There are not many people in the Canberra region who are yet to try and enjoy Lake George wines. Did you know that our great partner, the Canberra Yacht Club, was formed on Lake George before moving to the newly created shores of Lake Burley Griffin in 1964! Lake George wines have long featured at our Clubs, especially as we have embraced local produce in recent years. Enjoy the floral notes of the crisp, yet smooth Lake George Riesling, and deep plum tones of the rich and delicious Lake George Shiraz – the ideal way to take some time out to celebrate our golden anniversary.
The Half Century Blend with Lonsdale Street Roasters
Canberra's long standing coffee institution, Lonsdale Street Roasters, have developed a special Half Century Blend for our celebrations. As seen on TV We recently shot for our tv ad to celebrate our anniversary. Monday 16 May saw the Clubhouse and Bar at Woden Central transformed for the day as we filmed our first television ad in over fifteen years. The (very heavy!) pool tables were moved so a temporary stage could be set up for Hayley Jensen and her band to perform their take on the iconic Aussie song, 50 Years, first released by Uncanny X-Men in 1985. Our filming day saw multiple generations of families with strong historic links to the Club ‘gather round the tables’ to collaborate on this exciting project. We are so grateful to the contributions made by these families over the years, and were delighted to bring them together for such a special day to tell the story of their Club. The TV ad will air from July and Hayley Jensen will perform a special Golden Anniversary set, including Uncanny X-Men’s 50 Years, at our One Golden Night gala dinner in late August.

Price Rollbacks Head back in time with great savings on your favourite dishes from July to September. To celebrate our Golden Anniversary, we're turning back the clock and rolling back the prices on some of your favourite Club meals from the early years. Throwing back to the days when Reef 'n' Beef was the talk of the town and perms were all the rage, we will be serving up classic dishes like Chicken Hollandaise, Lemon Sole, and Fisherman's Basket, discounted to their former prices. Available at Woden, Tuggeranong and Jamison, these rolled back prices offer something for every member of the family with Chocolate Mousse and Frog in a Pond also featuring in our lineup. Each week we’ll let you know when the price rollback is about to hit, so make sure to follow us on Facebook by scanning the QR code to the right to be in the know. Community Key Partner We are thrilled to announce that Canberra Yacht Club is our new Community Key Partner, with the Canberra Southern Cross Club providing up to $150,000 over the three year term of the partnership. The Canberra Yacht Club runs sailing schools for adults and children, and a range of programs to build confidence and promote active lifestyles. 18

Vinnies Night Patrol is 21 For over 20 years the Club has been supporting Vinnies in its good works in the community, helping them provide practical assistance to those doing it tough. This year in August the award-winning Vinnies Night Patrol will turn 21! Every night the team of dedicated volunteers from Vinnies reach out to at risk Canberrans and those experiencing homelessness for some company, something hot to drink and a nourishing sandwich prepared by the Club. The service also provides a point of contact to connect those in need with emergency accommodation and other services. We are proud to be a supporter of the Night Patrol for over 20 years through our Community Rewards program. If you want to assist us to provide further support for this vital service, see our friendly Reception team to ensure your membership is linked to St Vincent de Paul Canberra / Goulburn so that 7.5 cents of each dollar you spend on eligible food and beverages at our hospitality venues goes to them.
