The purpose of an air-separator box is to allow for concrete to be mixed and placed using a conventional shotcrete machine. The problem with using a standard type shotcrete nozzle to pour a slab or floor, is that the material impacts the surface at a high velocity. As a result of this velocity, aggregate will not adhere to the surface until a layer of paste has built-up. This type of rebound can create pockets of aggregate that exist without cement, which causes voids within the concrete. An air-separator box is designed to stop the material from impacting the surface with any substantial velocity. The box is lined with thick rubber to reduce wear and decrease velocity. The air-separator box is also equipped with a vent on the top, to allow the conveyance air to escape without pushing the material out of the bottom of the box.
