Executive Summary “A simple act of caring creates an endless ripple that comes back to you.”

We, at the Canadian Cancer Society – Nova Scotia Division, have the honour and pleasure of experiencing how your gifts make a difference in the lives of so many Nova Scotians dealing with cancer.

Thanks to you, we raised $15 million to expand The Lodge That Gives.

We’d like you to meet three inspiring individuals who have started endless ripples. A daughter who turned the loss of her father into a catalyst for change and helped Nova Scotia become a national leader in funding pancreatic cancer research; a small child who already knows what it is to give back; and an innovator who turned his best memory into something all kids with cancer can experience. A year marked by generousity led to some incredible milestones. We completed a $15 million campaign to expand The Lodge That Gives and supportive care programming – creating The Sobey Cancer Support Centre. The Centre will be a beacon of light to Nova Scotia families. We made a huge step in the right direction in funding research into one of the most deadly forms of cancers. We were awarded the Charity Intelligence’s honour of a 4-star rating for excellence in financial transparency, accountability to donors and cost-efficiency.

Thanks to our approximate 45,000 donors and more than 5,000 volunteers who helped us in 2014.

Because of you, we raised more than $8 million. This money will fund new research, provide more lodging for patients receiving cancer treatment, send children with cancer to camp, and change public policies that help us prevent cancer now and in the future. Like you, we know there is much more work to do and more questions to answer. Why is cancer still the leading cause of death in Canada? How can we prevent cancer before it starts? How can we ensure more people survive cancer in the future? These are the questions that will continue to drive our work. Thank you for an amazing year. Together, let’s continue to make an impact on cancer, here and now.

The Canadian Cancer Society is the leading not-for-profit funder of cancer research in Canada.

Let’s stop cancer, together Together, The Canadian Cancer Society – Nova Scotia Division, approximately 5,000 dedicated volunteers and 45,000 generous donors work to stop cancer in its tracks and support those living with cancer, here and now. The Canadian Cancer Society funds more lifesaving cancer research than any other charity in Canada, and we wouldn’t be able to do it without you. Because of you, we continue to make great achievements in our mission to eradicate cancer. With prevention methods and the implementation of public health policies, many cancers can be prevented. Together, we save more lives. Thanks to you, more than 125,000 lives have been saved nationally since 1988 and the 5-year survival rate has increased from 25% in the 1940s to 63% today. To all of you who donate, volunteer, share your story, walk, run or canvas for the cause, and those who contribute in their own special way, thank you. You are extraordinary. Together, we will save lives, fund more research and support those living with cancer, here and now.

Impacting cancer, together When my father Craig was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2006, I quickly discovered there was very little information available on this deadly form of cancer. Very few research proposals were being funded despite being the fourth most common cause of cancer death in Canada. The 5-year survival rate is 8%. We believed more could be done. When Dad passed away, I created Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society and in the first year alone we raised a staggering $10,000. The next year we raised even more and I realized we could actually make an impact. This year, together with our partners the QEII Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society – Nova Scotia Division, we were able to make a remarkable investment to pancreatic cancer research. Craig’s Cause committed $500,000; $300,00 of which was raised in partnership with the QEII Foundation over the past several years. The QEII Foundation committed an additional $200,000 and the Canadian Cancer Society, Nova Scotia Division matched $700,000 in funding for a combined multiyear commitment of $1.4 million.

Stefanie Condon-Oldreive, Founder of Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society

This incredible accomplishment placed Nova Scotia as a leader in funding pancreatic cancer research.

Impacting hardto-treat cancers Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society, QEII Foundation and Canadian Cancer Society – Nova Scotia Division joined forces to make an unprecedented multi-year $1.4 million commitment to pancreatic cancer research.

In 2014, Nova Scotia emerged as a leader in funding pancreatic cancer research.

National impact on cancer research Thanks to our generous donors, the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute (CCSRI), the Society’s research arm, funded $37 million in cancer research in 43 institutions and 10 provinces across the country. Through the Canadian Cancer Society – Nova Scotia Division traineeship and the Cancer Research Training Program, Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr. Patrick Murphy is working with Dr. Patrick Lee of Dalhousie University.

The Canadian Cancer Society funds more cancer research on more types of cancer than any other national charity.

[Research in prevention] Research in prevention can have a dramatic impact on both reducing the burden of cancer and on influencing policy makers. In Nova Scotia, the Society is working with our partners to reduce the risk of melanoma through a Tanning is Out campaign and has been proposing a ban on flavoured tobacco to keep tobacco out of the hands of youth.

In 2014, through our advocacy efforts with municipalities, there are now 3 more smoke-free outdoor spaces.

Raising funds, together A few weeks after Hailey was born, her breathing became severely strained and we rushed her to the hospital in a panic. After several tests and surgeries, we were told the devastating news that she had a Stage 1 Neuroblastoma tumour in her neck. When you go through something like this, you want so badly for something positive to come out of it. When she grows up, I want to tell her that she didn’t go through it for nothing. As a family we are committed to fundraising through Relay For Life and Daffodil Month. Relay is an important event for us. Hailey loves doing the Survivor Lap and has even been a team captain for two years. Not only does it provide a supportive and positive environment where we can share our story, but it also allows us a chance to give back. As Hailey gets older, my hope is she can take on a bigger role and spread awareness that cancer does affect people of all ages. As told by Hailey’s Parents Tamara and Phil Cantrill

[Daffodil Month] Fundraisers and supporters – whether big or small (like Hailey) are invaluable to the Society. For more than 20 years, the Farmers brand (part of Agropur Dairy Cooperative) has supported Daffodil Month by providing cold storage facilities to store fresh daffodils as they await their delivery to volunteers across the province. This fundraising campaign would not be possible in Nova Scotia without the support and transportation by Farmers trucks and drivers.

[ Relay For Life ] Relay For Life brings together 400 communities across Canada to raise more than $40 million to advance cancer research and support Canadians living with cancer. Here in Nova Scotia, 25 Relays raised an amazing $1.8 million dollars. Last year, Hailey was the youngest team captain at the Halifax Relay proving that Relay is an inspiring event for all ages.

Independent Fundraising Partners The Society relies on our valuable partners to help us raise funds and create awareness. Our supporters are provincial and local event sponsors; business leaders, passionate volunteers, and groups such as Trailblazers, GIVETOLIVE, Cops for Cancer and Curl for Cancer.

38,000 bunches of fresh daffodils arrive each year from the UK for Daffodil Month. Last year, daffodil flower and pin sales raised $120,269 to support programs and fund research.

The Relay For Life Dream Team is a group of community leaders who each commit to raising $10,000. Together they raised more than $100,000 to provide support for Nova Scotians living with cancer.

COOKING FOR

CANCER bite for the fight Cooking for Cancer raised more than $77,000 for Nova Scotia programs and services.

Supporting those living with cancer, together Since I was diagnosed with cancer three decades ago, there have been tremendous advances in research and treatment. Due to better diagnostic imaging, earlier detection and more advanced treatment plans, we now have terms like “curable cancer” which is a testament to the advances that have been made. However, research remains key in all facets of cancer. We still have a long way to go, but we are headed in the right direction. The Canadian Cancer Society – Nova Scotia Division has a wide variety of programs to offer patients such as Camp Goodtime, The Lodge That Gives and CancerConnection. I first attended Camp Goodtime when I was 17 years old and it was the first time I told someone I had cancer. I was able to be myself and not feel selfconscious about my treatments or scars. My time at camp gave me perspective, new friends, a community and confidence — even my first kiss. It changed my life.

Dave McKeage Cancer survivor, volunteer and advocate

10

It’s an honour for me to volunteer and support those going through cancer. I don’t know how anyone could go through what I did, see what I saw and not be empathetic to those going through a similar journey. I’ve been involved with camp for almost 30 years now and I could not even begin to explain how much it has taught and directed me in life. I am deeply grateful for the opportunities camp has afforded me. The Society has changed the lives of hundreds of children, youth and families—mine included.

Canadian Cancer Society | Annual Report of the Nova Scotia Division 2014-2015

[The Lodge That Gives] The Lodge is a home-away-fromhome for patients receiving cancer treatment in Halifax. This year, The Society reached its goal of raising $15 million for an expanded facility. The newly expanded building will add 30 extra beds, a commercial grade kitchen, new furnishings for the bedrooms and common spaces as well as new and renovated space for wellness and patient support programming.

The expanded Lodge That Gives will be called The Sobey Cancer Support Centre and will increase the beds from 34 to up to 64.

[ Holy Redeemer ] The Cape Breton Accommodations Program had 166 stays at the Holy Redeemer Convent in Sydney throughout 2014.

[ Camp Goodtime] For a week each August, approximately 70 children come to Camp Goodtime. These kids, who are living with cancer, can come together and enjoy just being a kid. A young Dave McKeage came to Camp Goodtime and feels very strongly that children living with cancer have the chance to experience the support that comes from such a positive environment.

For more than a decade, Camp Goodtime has been proudly supported by Around The Bend Foundation.

Financial Highlights

for the period February 1, 2014 to January 31, 2015

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Finance and Audit Committee, I am pleased to report that the Nova Scotia Division of the Canadian Cancer Society has continued to exhibit strong financial performance. A donation to the Canadian Cancer Society in Nova Scotia is an investment in the continuing fight against cancer. This year, the Society posted revenues of $8.5 million for the period February 1, 2014 to January 31, 2015. In analyzing the sources of those revenues, we continue to be humbled by the generosity of Nova Scotians who place a priority on making regular or planned gifts to the Society. Twenty-six percent of our revenues came from Planned Giving, with another 22% coming from Annual Giving, Major Gifts and Tributes. These donations are an embodiment of the generosity and sense of community for which Nova Scotians are famous. We have been working hard to diversify our revenue streams. The 25 Relay For Life events raised 22% of our revenue, and we introduced Cooking For Cancer, which was very successful in its inaugural year.

The hope for a cancer-free world rests with cancer research and last year, we reported that we had invested more money in research than ever before. We are very pleased to report that our investment in research this year has eclipsed that of last year! The Nova Scotia Division of the Canadian Cancer Society is committed to the principles of financial stewardship. That commitment was confirmed in July 2014 when Charity Intelligence awarded their highest 4-Star rating to our division. Charities achieving this designation are deemed to excel in financial transparency, accountability to donors and cost efficiency. As further support of our financial stewardship, we are pleased to report only 9 cents of every dollar raised went to administrative costs, which is well below the guidelines set by the Canada Revenue Agency. Thank you for your generosity and your commitment in our fight against cancer.

David Boyd Treasurer
