LIFETIMES Camp Goodtime celebrates 30 years

SUMMER 2015

Generous donors, like you, made it possible for children to attend Camp Goodtime for the past 30 years and enjoy just being a kid.

T

hanks to amazing donors, like you, long-lasting programs like the Canadian Cancer Society’s Camp Goodtime are possible in Nova Scotia. Camp Goodtime provides children between the ages of 7 and 16, who are living with or beyond cancer, with a fun, carefree place to go for one week in the summer. Campers have the opportunity to participate in a variety of awesome activities including canoeing, drama, fine arts, swimming and enjoying just being a kid.

Camp Goodtime alum shares his experience “My time at Camp gave me perspective, new friends, a community and confidence. It changed my life,” Camp Goodtime alum, Dave McKeage, remembers his earlier days at camp, almost 30 years ago. “I could not even begin to explain how much it has taught and directed me in life. I first attended Camp Goodtime when I was 17 years old. I was able to be myself and not feel selfconcious about my treatments or scars,” says Dave.

Thank You to Our Dedicated Sponsor Without the dedication and generosity of the Around The Bend Foundation, Camp Goodtime would not be possible. We would also like to thank all of our Camp Goodtime donors for their generosity over the past 30 years. The Newsletter of the Canadian Cancer Society

The Lodge That Gives expansion is well underway

Y

ou, our generous donor, made the dream of an expansion become reality. We broke ground on a cold December day and since then the foundation has been poured, bricks have been removed and we can happily say the expansion is moving along quickly. We are already approximately 10% complete. The expanded Lodge That Gives will ensure we can continue to provide valuable support to cancer patients in Nova Scotia. This improved facility will become a core area of patient and family support in our province. Thank you to all of our valued donors for making the expansion possible! We will be sure to keep you updated throughout construction. With an expanded facility, we will need your support more than ever. If you’d like to make a donation to the Lodge, please call 1-800-639-0222 or visit cancer.ca.

Together, we are working to prevent cancer

I

n 2014, Sydney-Whitney Pier MLA Gordie Gosse announced he had throat cancer caused by the HPV virus. He began advocating his colleagues for a HPV vaccine to be made available to boys. Normally considered a virus contracted by females, Gosse brought much needed awareness to this important cause. Girls in Nova Scotia have been recieving the vaccine since 2007. Gosse led the fight for the vaccine in Nova Scotia and in the recent budget, the Nova Scotia government announced the HPV vaccine will be made available to Grade 7 boys as part of the regular school-based immunization program. Nova Scotia was the third province to take this momentous step. Many key advances in the path to understanding HPV in cancer have been made by researchers funded or affiliated with the Canadian Cancer Society, leading to major impacts on cancer care worldwide. The Society continues to support research on HPV and cancer, providing over $4 million in research funding over the past 15 years.

Gordie Gosse, former MLA, led the fight for free HPV vaccines for boys in Nova Scotia.
