You stand proud during the survivor lap, you quietly reflect during the luminary ceremony, and you celebrate as we close another year of Relay.

The money you raise will be used to support important cancer research and ensure that Canada’s best researchers continue to unlock the mysteries of these 200 diseases we call cancer. But beyond research, your donations support important support programs. In Nova Scotia, The Lodge That Gives and the Cape Breton Accommodations Programs offer cancer patients and their families a caring, comfortable home-away-from-home during cancer treatment. Your donations ensure that we can continue to be the warm smile, the caring words and the safe harbour during life’s worst storms. You make all this possible. Thank you!

Robin McGee [Cancer Survivor]

From my perspective, I’ve only got so much time so I’ve got to spend it doing these kind of things. Remission for me can end any time.”

“Cancer may indeed take me out someday. But if it does, I will go down swinging. No matter how many years I have left, I will devote them to helping people like myself...to help them face it, get through it, and connect despite it.” As a clinical psychologist, Robin McGee’s daily work is to help people. When she received a diagnosis of late-stage colorectal cancer, and was then told that her cancer had metastasized to an inoperable location, and that her survival chances were less than 4%. She described it as “being clubbed on the head and thrown in a mud pit. You are stunned, and you can claw at the walls all you want – you cannot get out. And the monster is coming.” Robin’s cancer journey was a difficult one. She had 28 days of chemotherapy and radiation in combination, a major surgery, six months of chemotherapy, and then a second surgery. She turned to the Canadian Cancer Society for help and through the CancerConnection program, she was matched with a woman who had a similar experience and was able to offer advice, comfort and inspiration. “Now that I am a survivor, I’m returning the favour by helping others through their cancer experience. I have had the privilege of providing support and mentorship to more than 20 people facing a cancer diagnosis. CancerConnection trains volunteers to provide emotional support and share practical insights about living with cancer.” Robin is also an avid Relay For Life participant. Since 2012 Robin has been the top fundraiser at the Middleton, Nova Scotia Relay For Life, her team has ranked in the top two teams each year as well. Robin shared her story in her new book “The Cancer Olympics”. She also generously donated a portion of the proceeds from the sale of her book to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Everyone has a cancer story. We’ve all been affected by cancer in some way, shape, or form. I want to tell Marc’s story because he can’t.”

At the age of 20, Marc Vallée was diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer. It presented itself as a dark mole on his chest, and a large section of his skin was removed in the hopes of getting all of the cancer. A few years later, Marc was on a trip in France when he became very ill and lost motor function on one side of his body. It was then discovered he had developed complications including blood clots and brain tumors. “My parents flew to France to be by Marc’s side, while my other brother and I were left to wonder if we would ever see him again,” says Alain. “A blessing in disguise is that France is home to some of the best brain surgeons around. Marc had an operation to drain his blood clots, he recovered and regained complete motor function, but the tumors remained.” After a short recovery time, he returned to Nova Scotia, however, his new diagnosis was grim. The cancer had spread not only to his brain but to his bones, liver, and other vital organs as well. A treatment plan was in place but the cancer was relentless. One month after the event in France, Marc passed away. “I remember holding his hand and having him clench back one last time,” says Alain. “It simply wasn’t fair. Marc’s life had been cut so short, and he had such incredible potential. He was at McMaster University pursuing Medical Physics at the time, and had plans to improve diagnostic imaging for cancer detection as well as treatment protocols.”

“Prevention is better than a cure, we can stop many cancers before they even start.” 11
