LIFETIMES This holiday season, we are thankful for FALL 2015

our Holiday Heroes We are thankful for every one of you who make a difference in the fight against cancer. New Program Offered! he Nova Scotia Division is pleased to welcome new volunteers as part of a new project designed to assist residents and past residents of The Lodge That Gives. The main role of the volunteers is to offer support and information to individuals who are nearing the end of active treatment and transitioning into survivorship. These volunteers each bring diverse experience to the table and are quite excited to be a part of this new and exciting pilot project. The volunteer role is being implemented in Nova Scotia by Cancer Care Nova Scotia and the Canadian Cancer Society-Nova Scotia Division. For more information contact, Kim Veino, 902-423-6183.

r. Rebecca Auer is making a difference in pancreatic cancer research. She received a grant to investigate whether a vaccine could stop cancer from spreading after surgery. As a scientist and surgical oncologist at The Ottawa Hospital, she is studying this promising new therapy. Appreciating the potential impact of this study, a group of cancer organizations – Craig’s Cause Pancreatic Cancer Society, the QEII Foundation, the National Pancreatic Cancer Canada Foundation (NPCCF) and the Canadian Cancer Society – have teamed up to co-fund this work. Dr. Auer is hopeful that her research will lead to new therapies for pancreatic cancer within as little as 5 years.

Thank you to all of our donors, sponsors, volunteers and supporters. Without you, we would not be able to continue in our mission to eradicate cancer and support Nova Scotians. The Lodge That Gives celebrates 25 years of comfort and support for Nova Scotians

T

wenty-five years ago, the doors to The Lodge That Gives opened and welcomed cancer patients from across Nova Scotia. In 1989 the vision of The Lodge That Gives was just a dream. Through the generous support of donors like you, it became a reality. Now, 25 years later, not only has The Lodge That Gives been a comforting home-away-from-home for thousands of Nova Scotians, but we are half way through the tremendous expansion which will mean accommodations and support services for even more patients in Nova Scotia.

“When I’m in Halifax and drive by the hospital, I remember my cancer treatments. When I drive by the Lodge, I have nothing but comforting memories.” - Lodge Resident from Wolfville “My cancer diagnosis came at a particularly dizzying time in my life. After just one night, I knew The Lodge was a place where I would be comfortable staying. It was a huge relief because I didn’t need to worry about whether or not I could afford this…instead I could concentrate on my treatment and getting well,” says a Lodge resident from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

Expansion update

V

ery soon we will be able to welcome 64 guests each night to stay at the newly expanded facility of The Lodge That Gives. Not only will we be able to accommodate an additional 30 people, but The Sobey Cancer Support Centre add-on will mean new programming such as a respite day room. We are more than 50% through the renovations.
