The month was established to honor and maintain Filipino culinary traditions, as well as to recognize the farmers and fishermen who make it all possible. Events held throughout the month usually feature food competitions, exhibitions, and online seminars. Filipino Food Month was created through the advocacy of the Philippine Culinary Heritage Movement (P.C.H.M.), which pushed for the establishment of this celebration.
P.C.H.M. President Jam Melchor explained the importance of this holiday, stating “Just like our beautiful old songs, antique houses, and folk dance, our long-standing culinary traditions need to be served as well, especially since many of our heirloom food products and practices are slowly disappearing in the face of globalization of food culture.”
