I Saw Santa Last Night – The Story Words and Music by Robyn Scott & Brian Dolph 100% CANCON What happens when a talented singer/songwriter like Robyn Scott hears strange thumping sounds on her roof during the holiday season? She writes a song about it of course! “I Saw Santa Last Night” is a fun and infectious Christmas song. From that first magical note listeners can’t help but fall in love with the song, and it is not long before they begin to sing along.

stations.

While Robyn did take music lessons throughout her childhood it was always singing she enjoyed most. This love of singing lead Robyn to the Hastings and Prince Edward County Concert Choir; giving her the opportunity to travel to Europe on a two week tour.

The concert with Terri was a magical experience for Robyn and solidified her return to the country music scene. Since that night, Robyn has been an in demand artist performing her blend of traditional and contemporary country all over the region. She can also be found on stage at various open mic and writer nights in Nashville.

After all of this initial success and positive response Robyn decided it was time to record a full album. This time she headed to Cradle to Rave Studio’s; Howie’s House of Music in Oshawa Ontario where Thomas Wade produced her first full length album, “Take The Next One Back“. Each single release According to Robyn, who was enjoying some eggnog and a from the album received air play from 60 - 80 % of the radio little cup of cheer at the time, there was a ruckus on the roof stations across Canada, and every single reached the top 100 of her house. That is when Robyn stopped wrapping her last Canadian content chart, two landing in the top 40. Because of minute gifts and headed outdoors to see what the fuss was this success Robyn was nominated for female vocalist of the about. Only Robyn knows for certain what happened, but she year for Ontario by the OCPFA. swears she heard and saw 8 reindeer with a sleigh pulling an Elf as they flew into the night! In 2001 Robyn showcased her talents during Canadian Country Music Award Week in Calgary Alberta. “I Saw Santa Last Night” is a Christmas song that everyone will want to hear over and over again. And yes, once you hear Robyn has performed at the Havelock Country Jamboree on it, it will be stuck in your head all day long… several occasions, Belleville’s Waterfront Festival as well as rodeos and festivals all over Ontario. At the age of 17 Robyn and her father met with Gary Buck, a well known Canadian country music producer, and planned a trip to Nashville Tennessee where she would record her first single “Ain’t that Enough“. There was some interest in the song from radio prompting Robyn to meet again with Gary to plan another trip to Music City. During her second Nashville trip Robyn recorded two more songs, “Wife of Goodtime Charlie“, and “You Better Call Home“. Both were released as singles and both garnered positive response from radio. Once again Robyn headed back to the studio this time recording “The Dangerous Kind“, and “Swingin’ on the Old Oak Tree“. With each release Robyn was creating a loyal fan base and making herself a home on both Canadian and European radio

Lately Robyn’s new best friend has been her guitar. Together they have added a new dynamic to her live performances. Robyn has also taken the plunge and began writing her own songs. This new found love of writing has further invigorated Robyn and given new energy to her and her music. Robyn looks forward to recording a new album and reestablishing her place on country radio and in the heart of country music fans everywhere. Keep an eye and an ear out for Robyn Scott, she is back!

An Instant Classic

“Don't Tell Me It's Christmas“ Julia Haggarty &

Charlie Weber Nostalgia and Christmas spirit shine in this brand new seasonal duet out of London, Ontario. Singer-songwriters Julia Haggarty (Country) and Charlie Weber (Folk/Rock) come together to tell the tale of two star-crossed lovers in their original song "Don't Tell Me It's Christmas". A reluctant Christmas story that tugs at the heart strings, “Don't Tell Me It's Christmas” captures the essence of the Christmas spirit and just how lonely the holidays can feel when you can’t be with the one you love. Because, "a holiday without you is no holiday at all.” "Don't Tell Me It's Christmas" offers a modern twist on the wartime era songs like “White Christmas” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, where the characters are torn apart by things that are beyond their control. When asked about the writing process, Charlie says “I walked into the session with an opening line, Don’t Tell Me it’s Christmas and Julia just ran with it. With her sense of sentimentality and twangy charm, I think we created a Christmas song that pays homage to those holiday classics we all know and love, while also bringing something

new to the table.” With over twenty years of performing experience, Julia Haggarty knows how valuable time is and how it feels being on the road, missing out on special occasions birthdays, thanksgivings, and yes - even Christmases. “It felt very natural for me to write about being away from home, away from those things that you’ve known and loved since you were a child," Julia shares. "It’s a song that I really relate to, and I hope others will too; especially anyone who might be missing that someone special during this holiday season.”

Over the years in producing our A Country Christmas for radio stations across Canada one of the difficulties has been to find good CanCon material. “Don’t Tell Me It’s Christmas” is a well produced song with solid vocals and great production. This Christmas song could become an instant classic that will be played on radio for years to come. Have a listen and download today to add to your holiday programming. Your listeners will love.

BRITTANY BRODIE

“IT’S CHRISTMAS”

Brittany Brodie is a singer-songwriter who admires almost every genre of music. From a young age she’s always known she would have a career in the music business and her strong work ethic, talent and positive attitude has made her the artist she is today. Brittany grew up on traditional country music from Vern Gosdin and Dottie West to Johnny Horton and George Strait. In later years she was listening to LeAnn Rimes, The Dixie Chicks, Lee Ann Womack and Martina McBride. She found inspiration from The Spice Girls. They were what got her through her formative years, being bullied throughout her childhood. “One day I will thank them in person!”

do. It chose me. I was born to have this life, this career. I have never had to think about my purpose in life. I've know since day one.” Brittany’s goals and sources of inspiration continue to flourish with every day that passes. Brittany’s vocal range and versatility already sets her apart from many of her contemporaries. But it is her drive, stubbornness and her hard work ethic and knowledge of the music business that will carry her into her own realm of success. The Mount Forest native released her single, "It's Christmas," on Nov. 12 2018 to country radio and has found immediate success.

Brittany has a powerful set of pipes with full vocal range. She loves a power ballad. She began performing in the privacy of her home growing up, and started out in singing competitions at the age of 8 and never looked back.

"People that don't listen to country music are telling me that they like it," said Brodie. "I've been told that it sounds like a song that has been around a long time, but it has a new feel to it."

Brittany travels the world finding new fans along the way, and she shows no signs of slowing down. Throughout the USA and Canada, Brittany has performed the Canadian and American National Anthems at major events. She released brand new music throughout 2019 and travelling to the U.K. and Australia where she is building a following.

The song has taken on new meaning to Brodie in the weeks since its release, as her brother Wade was killed in a head-on collision near Kenilworth on Nov. 19, 2018.

"I have the same drive and determination that I had as a young girl.”Working hard and believing in yourself and never stopping until you achieve it was the way I grew up. And when you reach that goal, set new ones. That work ethic and belief is in my blood. I have hopes and dreams that have come true and I keep making new ones. People always ask me, 'When did you get into music?' Music was not something I woke up one day and decided to

"There's one line I sing, 'A million snowflakes fall from heaven, stick out your tongue and try to catch them.' Obviously, that means something different now because of my brother," said Brodie. While the pain of Wade's passing is still present, Brodie said in a social media post that her brother would want her to sing and keep her commitments. It’s Christmas is a must add this year at country radio.

It has been a great year for country music. Women are finally being recognized by the industry, indie artists are finding that radio is opening up to their music and talents. In this issue we will focus on some cool indies which we feel will continue to make great music and we feel are the ones to watch in 2020.

Jackie Guy’s

“A Lot Like Me” a throwback to the kitsch and colour of the 1960s This year has been a busy one for Jackie Guy. She released her third album “I Did It Anyway” in February and two new singles (“Got Away” and “A Lot Like Me”) to international radio. “Got Away” was a success in the US and was added to over 80 stations with the help of Nine North Records, a new addition to Jackie’s team. Earlier this month, Guy released “A Lot Like Me” with its accompanying video a throwback to the kitsch and colour of the 1960s. Directed by Nathan Grayston at Gradient Visuals, the video features local talent and its retro feel has won rave reviews from Guy’s fan base. “I had the video planned even before I finished writing the song. I absolutely love everything about that era: the pops of colour, the happiness of it and the vintage cars. When Norm Konechny offered up his 1966 Mustang convertible for the shoot, I was elated. It gives the video that something extra.” Grayston experimented with new equipment and lighting, creating vibrant visuals that complement the feel-good breakup tune. “The best part of the video was having all five of my daughters take part in it.

It’s a truly memorable moment captured forever on film.” Guy’s new day job has caused a shift in how she feels about her music career. “Although most of us live to make music 24/7, the reality for most means a day job is a necessity. Luckily I love my work and as a physical therapist I am blessed with days of service, serving in a very different way from my music career. However, I still find the two are complementary. Where we can’t assist with healing with our hands, we can sometimes heal with our voices, so bringing my guitar to work happens more than you would think!” Future plans include continuing to craft songs that the audience can relate to. “I’ll keep writing and sharing my music with the world, one song at a time,” says Jackie.

NEW SINGLE FROM SEAN HOGAN The response to Sean Hogan’s 1996 debut album was extraordinary. His uniquely authentic blend of ‘alt-country’ and ‘modern rustic pop’ immediately caught the attention of country radio and music fans across Canada, leading to his first Canadian Country Music Association award (Independent Male Artist of the Year, 1997). Sean’s next two albums, Hijacked and Late Last Night were each named Best Country Album at the West Coast Music Awards. He followed up these accolades with the CCMA’s Roots Artist of the Year award in 2003. His next album, Catalina Sunrise, won three more music industry awards and was named the second best album of 2005 by the Country Music News.

Hit single after hit single (Slow Turning, Sure Fire Love, Dream Vacation, Angeline, I’d Rather Have You, Centered, Catalina Sunrise, A Cowboy’s Heart, and Suck It Up to name a few) became staples of country music radio. Eighteen Sean Hogan music videos aired on Country Music Television. His first two U.S. album releases, 2003’s Ruled By Mercury and 2008’s Conspiracy Radio, climbed the Americana music charts and were wellreceived by radio south of the border. In between those releases, he recorded his fifth Canadian album, The Southern Sessions, putting him back on Canadian country radio with the hit singles What Would You Have Me Believe and Suck It Up. Even Linedancer Magazine (based in England) profiled Hogan with a great review and contributing choreographers writing dances to several Hogan tracks from the album. The 2009 U.S. release of The Southern Sessions produced two more chart hits there. In between he found the time to lead his annual cross-country Canadian Country Christmas tours, bringing a group of high-

profile Canadian country music artists to large and small communities coast to coast raising over $100,000 for local charities and sponsoring dozens of children in Third World countries over the past decade. Inspired in part by the work of two of his musical heroes, genre -defying songwriters John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett, Sean chose to free himself from the limitations that were the by-product of his previous successes and went to work on the propheticallytitled Phoenix. Within a few months he had created an album that erased the lines between roots rock and country, with sounds heavily influenced by the soulinjected music he has enjoyed his whole life. Great new songs ranging from soulful slow burners to the funky title track, several featuring additional vocals by legendary session singer Bekka Bramlett (Fleetwood Mac, Faith Hill, Robert Plant), resulted in an album that truly represented Sean’s most authentic self. In the spring of 2011, Sean was touring and readying Phoenix for release. The first single, Travel Plans, became another top ten hit single. But all wasn’t well. Sean was finding touring exhausting (for some strange reason), and had a chronic sore throat. The cause was diagnosed as tonsillitis, but treatment didn’t make his symptoms disappear. By mid-August he was diagnosed with oral pharyngeal cancer. Months of rigorous chemotherapy and radiation followed. Fellow artists and friends rallied to his support, holding fundraising concerts across Canada and carrying on his Canadian Country Christmas tour tradition in his absence. After a harrowing six months, Sean received a clean bill of health in March of 2012. Sean new single is She Makes Me Feel and is from his soon to be released album 7Come11

ANDREW FRELICK “HEADS UP” Heads Up is a mid tempo, break-up song! Co-written by Andrew Frelick & Doug Folkins, this upbeat, aggressive, modern country/pop crossover will have listeners singing along and grooving in their seats by the song's end. Dynamic and determined are just two words that can best describe country artist, Andrew Frelick! BRITTANY BRODIE LIGHTHOUSE Lighthouse is loving someone or something unconditionally; knowing that might never ever be yours again and being okay with that. There is a sense of freedom and nostalgia in that. I found inspiration near the water for this song while on radio tour in the east coast of Canada and being drawn to the magic and unknown of the world out on the ocean.

A Hit Single Written by Tenille Townes & Scotty Kipfer Long Way Home Scotty Kipfer releases his debut single to USA Country radio with Long Way Home featuring Molly Brown. Long Way Home was written by Scotty Kipfer and Tenille Townes (Somebody’s Daughter), mixing engineer is Dustin Olyan (The Cunning), and mastering engineer is Grammy Nominated Pete Lyman (Chris Stapelton, Dierks Bentley). Produced by Kipfer. “Tenille and I set out to write a song that captures the sweetness of young love,” Scotty says. “We wanted Long Way Home to convey the feeling of driving home from a date with someone we really like - when we wished the night would never end. There’s an innocence in this lyric that I’d love to see more of in today’s music.”

The Mark Konnors Band Sunny Days and Sleepless Nights Coming off of the success of his single “Country Girl” from last years breakout CD, Easthaven’s, Mark Konarowski moves forward with a new look and brand name, “The Mark Konnors Band.” This rebrand came about after meeting with Anthem Entertainment Publishing's Lauren Luie, who pitched him songs based on the strength of his recent CD called “Country Love,” which featured three singles which did very well on Sirius CBC Canadian Country Channel 171. Mark was fortunate to hear many songs from their writing team and was very happy to discover the song “Sunny Days And Sleepless Nights” by Bollinger, Martin, Long. Excited with his new look, and a more personal brand, the “Mark Konnors Band” is now set to release “Sunny Days And Sleepless Nights” across the Canadian Country Radio Network.

Lauren Mayell Tongue Tied Calgary-based singer/songwriter Lauren Mayell penned this new single with Tavish Crowe (who wrote the Carly Rae Jepsen smash hit “Call Me Maybe”) and Dan Swinimer (Jojo Mason, Madeline Merlo) who also produced. “Tongue Tied” summons Mayell’s musical hallmarks: soaring melody, smart lyrics, and just the right amount of twang, all anchored by her dazzling and powerful voice. As the kickoff to her forthcoming album (which will be called'The Journey'), “Tongue Tied” finds the 2018 Alberta Country Music 'Female Artist of the Year' at the absolute peak of her powers.
