Peg Branyan was already a big supporter of the Campbell Clinic Foundation, but when her fiancé (now husband) Tom Branyan tripped on some wooden steps and tore his suprapatellar tendons, the avid runner became an even stronger advocate.
“My boot heel got caught on a warped board in the step. As I was falling forward, rather than landing on gravel, I threw my body weight back. The other heel caught, and my tendons ruptured,” Tom said, recalling his fall two years ago in rural Mississippi. “I passed out for
the first time in my life from the pain.”

Letter From the Executive Director
On National Doctors Day, March 30, I was scrolling through photos from the recent James Harkess, MD Total Joint Lecture and James Beaty, MD Pediatric Orthopaedic Visiting Professor Lecture (p.8). I thought back to Dr. Leo Whiteside’s offer to residents, “If you need help navigating hospital policies or advocating for patients, you call me.” I recalled Dr. Todd Milbrandt’s guidance: “We all end up being leaders, in the OR, our practice, our field. You must be prepared.”
Over the last few months, we’ve built a new Grateful Patient website (p. 9), and along the way, spoken to many patients who have a new lease on life, thanks to their Campbell Clinic doctor. What do these patients have in common? The transformative impact of teaching; their doctors explained their condition and their options.
Patient Mike Humes said, after years of suffering and many attempts to address his back pain, “I never really fully understood what my issue was. I didn’t fully comprehend until I sat down with Dr. [Kirk] Thompson.”
The Campbell 100-year teaching culture extends to the community and around the world. It doesn’t stop with medical school or residency; it’s a lifelong discipline (p.5).
Every day is Doctors Day when you work in partnership with educators, researchers, writers, innovators, leaders and partners dedicated to excellent orthopaedic care. We invite you to help us build the next generation of doctors and healthcare professionals. Dr. Chad Campion
is a graduate of the UTHSC-Campbell Clinic
Orthopaedic Surgery
Residency and currently is an orthopaedic spine sub-specialist at Campbell Clinic. He is the only Memphis-area physician to
perform minimally invasive orthopaedic spine procedures. He is the co-director of the Mid-South Spine Symposium and sought-out speaker on spine health.
William Moore is a partner at Atkins Capital Management. He is an active member of the Memphis community, serving on several boards, including the finance committees for Christian Brother High School and Christ Methodist Day
School, public engagement chair for Shelby Farms Park Conservancy, and the City of Memphis’ strategic business model assessment committee.
Foundation ‘Heals Soles’ at Hospitality Hub
On March 4, Dr. David Richardson and a team of nearly 20 volunteers provided foot and nail care at the Hospitality Hub in Downtown Memphis for the second annual Healing Soles Outreach Day. More than 60 Hub clients received foot care, new shoes and socks, snacks and essentials kits.
Many individuals facing housing insecurity have limited access to healthcare and adequate shoes and socks. Thanks to sponsors QC Medical, Nine-Oh-One Bakery and Crye-Leike- Danny Freeman; Campbell Clinic Foundation staff; and first- and second-year medical students from UTHSC Student Orthopaedic Association, Hub clients received foot care and comfort.
This initiative highlights the Campbell Clinic Foundation’s commitment strengthening community connections. “Everyone, including the medical students, sponsors and research scholars, engaged meaningfully with our visitors and hosts,” explained Richardson. “The genuine connections and enthusiasm enhanced the experience for everyone involved.”
Shout Out to the SOA!
Time and time again, the Campbell Clinic Foundation depends on University of Tennessee Health Science Center Student Orthopaedic Association (SOA) members to volunteer alongside surgeons and staff in the community.
The SOA is a student organization dedicated to connecting future orthopaedic surgeons with mentors
and career education. These medical students embrace each opportunity to learn and to serve, and we continue to be both grateful and inspired.
“The whole reason I went into medicine was to help others,” explains second-year medical student, Savannah Lee. “When I get to do events like this, it fulfills that. I like to get to know people and let them
know I am here to help.”

Research Highlight: Campbell Research Leads to Positive Policy Change
Campbell-led research often looks beyond direct patient treatment to examine the broader healthcare landscape. Dr. Matthew Wideman, PGY-3, and Dr. Thomas “Quin” Throckmorton, recently published a paper discussing the recent approval of outpatient total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) surgery coverage through Medicare.
This review covers current research on outpatient TSA as well as the effects of this approval on healthcare access, patient care, and satisfaction. Outpatient TSA can offer the same or lower complication rates, reduced wait times for scheduling, lower costs, faster recovery, and a decreased likelihood of readmission—all while maintaining high patient satisfaction.

Proper patient selection is key to the success of outpatient procedures.
Beyond patient outcomes, outpatient TSA also brings advantages to the healthcare system. It increases efficiency by freeing up hospital beds, reduces prolonged hospital stays, and lowers costs for both hospitals and healthcare providers.
While outpatient TSA offers many benefits, we also recognize the challenges it presents. Outpatient facilities are often located in more densely populated areas, making access difficult for patients in rural or underserved communities, highlighting the need to address healthcare accessibility as we continue to advance treatment options.

The orthopaedic surgery residency is a rigorous five-year training program for physicians once they have completed medical school. Residents receive comprehensive training in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal diseases, disorders, and injuries in the operating room, clinic and classroom, alongside physician educators or “attendings.”
The Campbell Clinic, Campbell Clinic Foundation and the University
of Tennessee Health Science Center collaborate on this accredited, five-year orthopaedic residency program for 40 full-time orthopaedic residents. Residents train in Campbell Clinic facilities, as well as Regional One Health, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare and Baptist Memorial Healthcare.

New Endoscopic Spine Surgery Fellowship Starting Fall 2025
Led by Campbell Clinic’s Dr. Chad Campion, a first-of-its kind Endoscopic Spine Fellowship will be offered in Memphis!
This new three month orthopaedic surgery fellowship is intended for surgeons who have completed spine training and will focus on endoscopic and minimally invasive spine surgery.
Fellows will train with Dr. Chad Campion, the only surgeon in the Memphis area who is trained to perform endoscopic spine surgery.
Endoscopic spine surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that allows a surgeon to access the spinal column through a small incision less than one centimeter in length. Typically, the recovery time from a minimally invasive approach, such as endoscopic spine surgery, is much faster than traditional surgery.

2ND ANNUAL MID-SOUTH SPINE SYMPOSIUM
Thursday, October 23, 6 p.m. Welcome Dinner and Case Discussions Friday, October 24, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Symposium and Labs
Building on the success of the inaugural Spine Symposium last fall, the 2nd annual Mid-South Spine Symposium will include faculty from UTHSC-Campbell Clinic, Vanderbilt University, University of Iowa and University of Arkansas for the Medical Sciences. This program is intended for senior residents, fellows and early career orthopaedic surgeons and will include case discussions, lectures and cadaveric labs. Registration will begin in June 2025!
