CAMPBELL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF SURGEON TRAINING

he Campbell Clinic-led Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program reached the 100 year milestone in 2024!

Established in 1924 by Dr. Willis C. Campbell, the UTHSC-Campbell Clinic Residency Program has defined itself by advancing orthopaedics, leading across the field, and providing patients with the highest quality of care. The five-year intensive training is a collaboration among the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), the Campbell Clinic Foundation and

Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics.

“This centennial is a testament to the continued dedication of our faculty, staff, and partners,” said Dr. Frederick M. Azar, Campbell Clinic Chief of Staff. “Together, our unwavering commitment to training and nurturing the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons has solidified this program as a leader in the field and a driving force behind advancements in orthopaedic medicine.”

The Foundation facilitates the residency

program. To date, we have trained more than 750 surgeons to relieve pain, treat bone and joint conditions, and restore well-being.

“We exist to steward and advance this legacy of education and patient care,” said Foundation Executive Director Jenny Koltnow. “Donations to the Foundation impact patient outcomes and the future of musculoskeletal health. Education, orthopaedic research and local medical outreach programs ensure access to quality orthopaedic care.”

CAMPBELL CELEBRATES CENTENNIAL WITH ALUMNI, PARTNERS AND FRIENDS

The Campbell Clinic Foundation proudly hosted the Campbell Residency Program Centennial Celebration, Ingram Memorial Lecture and the 26th Annual Campbell Club Triennial in April 2024. The Ingram Lecture esteemed visiting faculty included Dr. Javad Parvizi and Dr. John Kelly. The second Campbell Awards honored the extraordinary achievements and excellence displayed by five Campbell Clinic alumni. The weekend showcased our relentless pursuit of patient well-being and excellence in orthopaedic care.

INAUGURAL MID-SOUTH SPINE SYMPOSIUM

INTERNATIONAL FELLOWS SEEK CAMPBELL TRAINING

The pursuit of education knows no boundaries. In June 2024, thanks to the American Orthopaedic Association AmericaBritish-Canadian (ABC) Fellowship program, seven international orthopaedic surgeons, representing Australia, Singapore, Ireland, England, and South Africa, spent five days in Memphis; then in September, thanks to the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons International Fellowship, two Japanese orthopaedic surgeons observed surgery, taught residents and explored the Memphis community.

Meanwhile, Campbell staff train alongside surgeons throughout the world. These opportunities for diverse perspectives foster cross-cultural collaboration and learning.

On September 20, more than 50 practicing surgeons, fellows, residents, advanced practice providers, and industry partners gathered for the inaugural symposium. The event featured faculty from Campbell Clinic, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), and the University of Iowa.

LABS AND EXPERTS BUILD CONFIDENT AND COMPETENT SURGEONS

In September, the Campbell Clinic staff hosted a special surgical approaches lab in collaboration with partners at Smith + Nephew and Roy Sanders, MD, a renowned orthopaedic trauma expert.

“One of the great features of this residency is our close relationships with industry partners, who leverage their incredible expertise and resources—and their proximity to our practice area—to provide unique learning opportunities for our residents,” said Chris Cosgrove, MD, an orthopaedic trauma sub-specialist at Campbell Clinic. “Trainees gain hands-on experience with leading-edge techniques and insights from experts in the field.”

FOUNDATION RESEARCH GROWS INTERNATIONALLY

In the last decade, Campbell Clinic Foundation clinical research studies have increased by more than 400%, and the number of sponsored studies continues to increase by more than 20% year over year! This year, collaborations included partners in Japan, Ireland, Canada and France, thanks to principal investigators and partners across the orthopaedic community who drive innovation and patient care.

RESEARCH SCHOLARS PROGRAM TURNS 5!

Since 2019, the Research Scholar Program is a “gap year” experience for young professionals interested in medical careers. During the paid, year-long program, scholars work across subspecialties and participate in clinical research.

Renn Eason, currently an M3 at UTHSC, says, “The research scholar position helped me achieve my dream of going to medical school. It is through this wonderful experience that I fell in love with orthopaedics.”

ORTHOPAEDIC EXPLORATION DAY

Campbell Clinic Foundation created an experience to place orthopaedics at the forefront of prospective medical students’ minds through our inaugural Orthopaedic Exploration Day.

On November 1, students from White Station and Collierville High Schools interacted with physicians and utilized instruments frequently used in the OR. Campbell Clinic residents, fellows, staff MDs, physical therapists, and industry partners facilitated immersive and engaging stations that focused on the tactile operations of a facet of orthopaedic care. Their primary task? Get students to interact with the materials and ask questions!

“It was just eye opening to see the technology used every day to care for others,” one student shared.

CEREBRAL PALSY CENTER – WHAT’S NEXT

Thanks to a $1 Million gift from the Children’s Foundation of Memphis, the Campbell Clinic Foundation-led Center of Excellence for Cerebral Palsy Research and Care has been able to strengthen the multi-disciplinary, comprehensive care for patients with CP for nearly seven years. This summer, the CFOM made an additional $900,000 grant to further expand medical support and patient services. We are deeply grateful for this investment and the opportunity to serve more and more pediatric patients and families in the coming years.
