DEDICATION

This year’s Avodian is dedicat-

ed to Adam “Bubba” Miller. This is Bubba’s “Blackjack” summer: his 21st summer at Avoda! To say Bubba is dedicated to Camp Avoda is an understatement. He quite simply loves camp, the campers, the staff, the CIT’s , our traditions, and all that Avoda stands for. One of our core values is Spirit and Bubba provides that important ingredient for Camp Avoda. Adam is always wearing clothing that reads “Avoda.” He bleeds Avoda Blue and White. He was a proud member of the 1995 Bunk 14. From there Bubba has worn many hats and held different roles: from Camp Driver, to Bunk 14 Counselor, to Color War General, to CIT Director, to Administrator. Whatever role he has, he has a smile on his face because he is at Camp Avoda. He is an Avoda Leader. Bubba’s current role on Administration is Program

Director. He has a handle on every aspect of our program from Reveille to Taps (letting it play all the way through so you can hear the echo reprise). If Bubba had a blackjack hand he would have an ACE-KING A: Avoda – Bubba is dedicated to All Things Avoda. C: Clip Board – Bubba’s trademark is his beloved clip board with his Color War teams listed on the back. E: Enthusiasm – Bubba’s enthusiasm at camp is contagious. K: Kind – Bubba is kind and is here for campers and counselors. I: Institutional knowledge. Whether it was a color war song from 15 years ago or a rainy day activity, Bubba knows it. N: Nucleus – Bubba seems to be at the center of all that happens at Avoda. People are drawn to him.

G: Getting loud – Bubba can project his voice better than anyone at camp! Being here for 21 summers makes Bubba a bridge – for so many campers, counselors, and alumni. He is a people person who loves Avoda people. Whether hanging out on his porch, planning special day activities, helping kids get to their periods, coming up with a new game for Bubba’s games, energizing the Pink Flamingos, or simply reminiscing about a great event from summers past, Bubba is the glue that holds many of us together. Adam “Bubba” Miller’s passion for camp, positive outlook, longevity, and commitment to making Camp Avoda the best place it can be is a powerful combination for an Avodian. We thank Bubba for all his hard work and all that he has does for our community.

his has been a great summer for the 184 individual campers who enrolled this year. One of those 184 campers was my own Grandson, Tyler who spent 5.5 weeks in bunk 2 and had a great time. In fact he did not want to leave when my son, Jeff, (Tyler’s father) came to pick him up. There were tears in his eyes when it was time to leave. He really wanted to stay to the end and he is only 9. It was great having him here. We welcomed a new Administrator to Avoda this summer: our new Assistant Director, Gary Rabinowitz, who was a camper back in the ‘70s, and is currently a teacher at the Hoosac School in New York State. Gary fit in very well and did an outstanding job. We also welcomed 2 new nurses to the infirmary. They are friends with one another and recent graduates of St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, NH. They both were recommended by our long-time nurse, Mary Ann French. They have done a superb job. Thank you so much Kelsey Lee and Sarah Sieber. Another addition to our staff was our new Assistant Chef, Dan McKenna, who is friends with our chef Scott Rubeck. They both work at Smith College and live on the same street in Easthampton. They made a fantastic duo in the kitchen. We also had 6 new international kitchen staff and two returnees from Mexico. All 8 did a great job in the kitchen and I hope some will be able to return next summer. One of our returning administrators took on additional duties this summer. Josh Fox, our Camp Advisor, also served as Waterfront Director, and

did both jobs extremely well. We also had two returning staff members in new positions running a great CIT program: Joe Frank was the CIT Director; and Richie Katz was his Assistant. I also want to thank the CITs for their hard work. They were great. Now that I have acknowledged our new additions to the administration, I would like to thank Ken Shifman, our Camp Director, who has done an excellent job in operating the camp. We switched to a new management program this year which made the operation of the camp much easier. Adam Miller, our Program Director, ran a wonderful program, both day and night. Leon Dyer, our Head Counselor and counselor of Bunk 14 was terrific. He organized all the weekly trips out of camp plus all of the overnights. He also was our master landscaper when it came time to maintaining the campus, both before and after camp. Besides all of the above, Leon was also Advisor to the Yearbook Staff. Our maintenance staff was augmented this year with the addition of Ronnie LaPointe who is a master carpenter. I want to thank Ernie Varnum for his work as Maintenance Supervisor. One person I deeply miss on staff is Tom Leavitt, who was our Director of the Capital Campaign and Director of Development. He is still volunteering his time when he can but his departure from our staff has left a big void. This has been a difficult summer for me personally because of an infection which I developed in my left leg. I spent nearly a week in the hospital. Soon after returning to camp

I developed laryngitis and could not speak for several days. This occurred right after I delivered a short speech to kick off Grandparents Day, which, by the way, was a great success. By the time supper rolled around, I had no voice at all. As I write this, there is some improvement. Hopefully, next summer, my health will back to normal. I especially wish to thank my wife Bobbie who was with me throughout my ordeal. It meant a lot to have her here. I also want to thank the nurses, Kelsey and Sarah for taking good care of me. I wish to especially thank Tyler Guay, my office assistant, for all his hard work this summer. We had some great activities this summer, particularly the Avoda Basketball and Soccer Tournament. Avoda swept the entire event. I am very proud of our campers. The Canoe trip, the bunk 14 overnight, the Mt. Monadnock trip, the CIT overnight, the inter-camp competition where we swept the Bournedale Tournament and the Pembroke Swim Meet are all highlights of this great summer on the shores of Lake Tispaquin. I would like to thank all of the department heads and the entire staff for providing the campers with an excellent camping experience. I truly hope that all of you will return to DEAR OLD A-V-O-D-A next summer when we start our 88th continuous season. With warm regards, Paul (PGD) Davis Executive Director

Ken Shifman Director’s Message

hen I am at camp I am not sure if anything else is going on outside of camp. Our world here at Avoda is indeed our own world. We have a finite number of places to go outside of camp. To the north is Subway. To the south is Dave’s Diner. To the east is The Village Market. The west is DQ! What else do we need?

Way to go guys. It came out great. We set up a brand new Ropes Course. Our weight room was improved thanks to the Felberbaum family. The bike course is underway and is a great foundation for that program area.We are on an upward trajectory and I am glad you are part of The Avoda Universe.

In talking with my friend and alum David Nollman, we notice that one of the cool things about coming back to Avoda as a camper, staff or alum, is the fact that things at Avoda are much the same year to year. The busy world outside of these walls grows, moves quickly, advances technologically, and pushes forward. At camp, time slows down. We take our time to get to line up. If you’ve been away for a long time and then return, you would have a hard time telling if the year was 2013, 1984, or 1970. Simple pleasures of hanging out with your friends, telling stories and jokes, playing sports, and swimming, rule.

We have many shining stars in our sky. It takes a village to run a summer camp! You are ALL amazing. Jill: thank you for so many things in your ever-expanding role here at Avoda. I love you so much. PGD – great job this summer. It’s fun working with you and I hope you found your black-handle scissors. Bobbie Davis – way to switch to high gear when Paul was out this summer. You were a great pitch hitter! Bubba – way to go this summer: thanks for your sense of humor and eternally optimistic view about everything Avoda. Leon – Good work with the many various things you tackle, including this very publication. J Fox – Thanks for stepping up this summer in your two important roles. Nice salad “pile” too. Gary – for year one, you seemed a lot more experienced than that. Thanks for jumping in right away and adding instant value to our team. Lee – great to have you here at Avoda. Joe Frank – You are a funny man. Or was it Sam who was here? Look at the Admin photo and you tell me… Tricky – I was impressed by our conversation in May and it was fun having you on the Admin team this summer. Great work running our two big events! Bob Stone – welcome back. Thanks for spreading positive word of mouth about Avoda, raking the bases, and running the hoop clinics. I look forward to collaborating further! Robin – thanks for your creativity and many ideas for Avoda beyond arts and crafts. Abe! Abe! Abe! Talk about dedication and conscientiousness – that is you. And a good guy too! See you for Asian Fusion. Tyler – good job in

This summer has been another great chapter in the history books. We saw lots of good action in Desert War – not a close affair, but an action-packed one for sure. We painted Israel on our 40 foot Rock Wall – thanks Jill! We made it on TV. We drove to Six Flags in fancy, air conditioned buses! We started new traditions: the Sophomore Overnight and brought back old ones: Friday Night Frisbee. We ate lots of fruit! We tried yoga. Really! Big Time Wrestling brought its ring and thoroughly entertained us. Paul Davis had his longest run in some time and burst through his “Welcome Home PGD” banner. We swept The Avoda Tournament. And because we were not busy enough, we held a bar mitzvah for our friend Matty Hartman. This was an exciting summer for Avoda, physically. We renovated our first cabin!

the office this summer. Your tool kit is constantly expanding and you were very helpful running the Main Office. Kelsey and Sarah – thanks for 1) great medical care 2) great attitudes, 3) great bedside manner, and 4) staying the whole summer. Hillary – en route to the five year club – awesome. Thanks for all you do: in the Infirmary and beyond.Your cheerful disposition is always welcome. Mary Anne – I know you are reading this. Thanks for helping recruit and orient our new nurses. You are awesome. Scott: Year six together – let’s go for seven. Dan – a great first year. You both run a tight ship and rose to the challenge of taking us to a new culinary level. Not to mention special occasions, schedule changes, and last minute requests. Jan, Leo, Tomas, Zsolt, Matyas, Joel, Cris, and Barni – thanks for your hard work – all the time. You do so much for camp. Ernie – thanks for helping keep camp in good shape. You are always on my mind. To the board of directors I salute you and thank you for your support, time, and all you do behind the scenes to make Avoda successful. Alumni – stay active and thank you for all you do for camp: financially and socially. Staff – If America runs on Dunkin, Avoda runs on SC’s and JC’s. CIT’s – simply the best. Thank you for all your hard work! The Camp Avoda Campers are what it’s all about and why we all are here. Great to see all your smiling faces all summer long. And Buddy and Griffin – you are such good doggies! I will end with this: we all orbit in and around the Avoda solar system. We evolve as a community and as one, continue to follow the same, age-old trajectories while exploring new programs, improvements, and soon to be traditions. With a V and an I and a C-T-O. And an R and a Y and a go team go!

Gary Rabinowitz Assistant Director’s Message

35 years. 3 ½ decades. 1,820 weeks. 12,775 days. That’s a long time to be away from anyone or anything. For thirty five years I was away from Avoda and to be honest I didn’t give much thought to returning. Call it serendipity because somehow I stumbled back into the welcoming arms of the Avoda family. (Thanks to Phish, but that’s a story for another time) I am so grateful to Ken, Paul and the rest of the administration and staff for welcoming me back into the community with open arms and warm smiles. The unconditional support and genuine care that I received upon my return is something special and a feeling I won’t soon forget. I thought I would let some brilliant lyricists capture the essence of the summer of 2013 “There’s a million ways to laugh and every one’s a path come on and join together with the band”. Pete Townsend Togetherness and laughter are cornerstone benchmarks at Avoda. If you walk six steps without hearing someone laugh then something is amiss. I think Josh Schenkman had my favorite camper laugh and Plotty, you took the cake for the counselors. To be blessed with a work environment where smiles and laughter dominate the days and nights is something that I will miss immensely over the winter months. Togetherness and teamwork are other daily cornerstones at Avoda. League play, Desert War, Color War, Soccer, hoops and hockey are all obvious examples of togetherness. But the real bonding and friendships are formed elsewhere. Playing games in the bunks, telling stories around the campfire, helping a fellow camper who might be having a tough day, or offering a friend something to eat, these are the simple moments that are the glue for lasting friendships. Walk-

ing in Bunk 7 or 8 on any given night and seeing them in a circle engaged in a game or deep discussion never ceased to make me smile. Bunk 3 members looking out for their “brothers” also was a top moment of this summer. “ And as we all play parts of tomorrow Some ways will work and other ways we’ll play But I know we can’t all stay here forever So I want to write my words on the face of today” Shannon Hoon Change and the ability to recognize it as it is taking place is a difficult concept for most people to wrap their heads around. This summer I have seen countless members of the Avoda community speak with such heartfelt passion about their Avoda experience. The most poignant is their understanding that the Avoda experience does not just manifest itself within the 50 acres in Middleboro, Massachusetts. One counselor passed along an anecdote where he was going through a difficult time and the first five people he called were all Avoda people. That is powerful! The older members of our family all seem to recognize that their time at Avoda has been one of the most meaningful experiences of their young lives. They speak of leaving their mark with new traditions, Color War victories, Avoda Tournament victories, helping campers and seeing a project through from beginning to end. Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes How do you measure-measure a year In daylights-in sunsets In midnights-in cups of coffee In inches-in miles In laughter-in strife Jonathan Larson

The time at Avoda passes extremely quickly. One day you wake up and realize that it is Color War and that the summer is rapidly coming to a close. How do we, as Avodians look at the time spent here? Here are some observations 156 Birkat renditions. (AK led the smoothest one of the summer) 32 Bonfires (Thanks to Abe, Joco, Sam Roth and Harrison for providing the tunes) 729 Misplaced pieces of clothing (That is a kind estimate) 1 awesome map of Israel painted on the rock wall 321 paddleboard expeditions (I may have had the best tumble into Tispaquin) 8,719 Pushups (That weight room got some serious use) 309 Bunkos hit 150 Shabbat Challah devoured Infinite amounts of laughter and smiles 47 Perfect bunk clean up scores (No bunk 14 you did not break through the door of this club) 5,261 PA Announcements (I will be hearing… “ Joe, call Bubba’s cabin” in my sleep) 197 Misplaced beanies (Those things obviously have wheels and like to travel) 119 Nicknames (I’m still partial to Bagel) Suffice to say, there is something special in this complex recipe and nobody exits untouched. Thanks again to Ken, Paul, Josh, Bubba and Leon, (the best team of people I have ever worked with) staff and campers for making this summer extremely special. You will all be missed. Keep on rockin’ and 5th period hockey guys, you are the coolest group around.

from Opening Day to color war. We had fun working with the new technology of photoshop and so much more in these advanced computers. With Joey Sherman and Leon Dyer at the helm, everyone got the work done with time to spare. Mike Golov continued to be the master at choosing and editing pictures. Also, Zach Kahan and Matt Glick were the fastest typers ever! The bunk 14 editors, though, wrote the articles while spending worthy time in the air conditioned Avodian room. Ben Shale, Bryce Tischler,Will Parven,Wes Fixler, and Jake Eagle volunteered to be a part of the Avodian staff. We thank them for their support and for their work. “ ne night, Bubba took Bunk 2 to a Newton Little League baseball game versus Walpole. Before the game, they played catch at the field, and Cole Busny schooled Matt Friedman in basketball. Everyone enjoyed popcorn during the game, and afterwards the bunk was treated to DQ to finish a great night.”

They are: Jesse Lichtman, Tyler Freedman, Drew Litner, and Ben Williams. They crawled around in the rafters and joked around with their fellow bunkmates. They swung around like Tarzan and attacked their prey. It was a very fun night.”

Then suddenly, Ben Rothschild spotted hundreds of ants invading their bunk next to the trashcan. All the kids started to yell even louder and panic. It was a bunch of chaos. They had an intense fight with the ants and eventually they overcame the invasion using chemicals and water.”

It was the first night of camp and we decided to have a dance party. We were dancing for 2 to 3 hours. We danced to so many songs that were awesome and Joco was the spotlight of the night when he did the worm on the floor and impressed everyone. Then after we danced the night away we went to bed. It ended up being so much fun. We decided that we would do it every night for the rest of the month.

It was the third Thursday of the summer and our bunk decided to go to Kimbll Farms for a field trip. At Kimball Farms there are a variety of things like mini golf, bumper boasts, and a petting zoo. We at dinner and made our way to the buses. We came across the petting zoo. Swoto dared Spencer Goff to jump in with the animals. He jumped in right as a staff member walked by. He yelled at Spencer until he got out. Then he asked him why he did that. “Swoto then said this is a petting zoo isn’t it”. The staff member said no and walked away. Once he was out of sight, we bursted into laughter. That was by far the best part of the summer.

Bunk 9 retaliated by throwing water balloons at Artie moments later. Artie and his fellow bunkmates thought of an elaborate plan of attack but were shut down by the Head OD ending the war. “ he second Bunk night of the summer was an exciting one. It all began with an hour of manhunt. Which soon transformed into penalty rushes with a football. After a while rules were changed and soon, Plotty ball was created. The point of the game was to get the football into the old flagrush jail without being tackled. It was the four counselors verse all nine campers. The counselors won almost every time, but in the end no one cared, Plotty ball was created.”

It was filled with people from every corner of the spectrum: characters, comedians, geniuses, musicians, athletes, and just terrific people. oward the end of first month, the members of the 2013 Bunk 14, along with their counselors, loaded up the vans with supplies and headed north. For a few hours, we stopped at Hampton Beach, where we took advantage of the fast food, shops, and the ocean views the boardwalk had to offer. Then, we drove through the border to Maine, and drove an extra 2 hours because Leon put the wrong address

in the GPS. Finally, we arrived at Camp Moxie, where we unpacked and went to bed. The next morning, we woke early, donned life vests and paddles, and headed to the nearby Kennebec River for some whitewater rafting, the main event of the trip. There were quite a lot of rapids, and although almost everyone got splashed, no one capsized, and everyone had fun paddling the rapids. Back at the campsite,

we enjoyed a delicious barbecue cooked by the counselors. The next day, we packed up and drove for most of the day. We ended up at the movies, and then concluded our overnight with a spectacular all-youcan-eat churrasco barbecue at Fogo de Chao, a high-end Brazilian restaurant in downtown Boston. We finally came back to camp, ending a successful 14 overnight. by Will Parven

n a cool Thursday morning, 31 campers embarked on the trip of their lives. These campers had practiced canoeing 5 times a week to prepare for the ferocious rapids of the Androscoggin River. The trip started off with a trip to the famous Old Orchard Beach. Avodians ate lunch and wandered around the area going into stores to buy items for 2 hours. After a grand time at Old Orchard, campers packed into vans for a 3 hour drive to the campsite. Campers worked through the rain to setup tents with little time to spare. After setting up the tents, campers enjoyed a

40

delicious barbeque cooked by the one the only Dan Friedman. Avodians chowed down on burgers and hot dogs till they couldn’t eat another morsel. Then we relaxed the rest of the night as we sat by the fire and shared comical stories. The next day, campers were awakened by a perky Leon. We ate a hearty breakfast of specialty donuts and got ready to canoe. The boats were off and with only a couple boats capsizing we made it to the lunch spot and enjoyed some delicious Subway. After campers canoed the remainder of the river they had some

downtime to relax and get ready for dinner. Dinner took place at a beautiful restaurant in Berlin, New Hampshire. We enjoyed a boatload of food and went back to the campsite and relaxed by the fire again. For the final day of the Canoe Trip, we started by having a 3 and a half hour ride to a little cafĂŠ on a beautiful lake in Wolfeboro New Hampshire. After lunch we headed to play paintball. The teams were Bunk 14 vs. staff and 12. 14 obviously won and destroyed 12. The trip ended with a great dinner at a nice restaurant. A good time was had by all on the Canoe Trip.

DEPARTMENT SECTION

After a 14 year for the

ages, the 2012 Bunk 14 was excited and energetic to start their CIT summer, an opportunity to give back to the place that gave them so much. With new periods such as the opportunity to coach league and our CIT meetings, the summer was definitely different, but fun and enjoyable nonetheless. As a 14, we never won kosher cabin, but as the summer progressed, we found that our calling wasn’t cleaning bunks, but cleaning camp. The CITs excelled at work detail throughout the summer. From cleaning the grove to scooping goose poop, the CITs made sure the

48

camp was crystal clean and spotless. While some lead their respective inter-camp sports teams, other valiantly lead various camp cleanups ranging from the waterfront to the athletic shack. This years CIT class prided themselves in their at-

tention to detail, making sure that every piece of trash, including that last Starburst wrapper, was thrown away. With the summer winding down, the CITs are happy with the work they completed this summer. CIT’s are truly the cog that keeps the camp clock ticking.

For

some people, services are just a ritual that they have to attend. For most others, it is a spirtual time that they really like to savor. A lof of kids at Avoda don’t regually attend services at home. Having them at camp really opens campers eyes. It is a great time to think and release all worries and stress. The camp Rabbi, Josh Cohen, makes a list of the eager campers that want to come up to the podium and help lead a prayer. There are always a lot of kids that take part in helping out. There is certainly a regular helping lead prayers. That would be Brett Fogel. He leads the Alau everytime. Also Benji Satloff is at the podium every week co-leading with Josh. Services at Camp Avoda are enjoyed by all.

Spending our summer at Camp

Avoda this year has been truly memorable. How special it is to be at camp each day and truly love what we do. Though we have only been here one summer, the campers and staff alike have made us feel at home. We have been fortunate to have an overall healthy and injury free summer, and we want to thank everyone for their help and support. Life at Avoda is never dull. From our nightly hangouts with Bunk 12, or the daily refrigerator raids for ice pops, the infirmary is always busy. We both are hoping to return to Avoda next summer and for many more to come. Thank you

Avoda for a summer we will never forget! We love you! Sarah & Kelsey

OPENING DAY

The

morning was sunny and nice as families one by one drove down Gibbs Rd to see the big blue Avoda sign and a C.I.T. to direct them where to go. Parents and kids went to check in with the one and only P.G.D. as the C.I.T.’s and bunk 14ers on the trucks hauled the camper’s bags to their bunk to unload. The parents and their sons would check

68

in at the infirmary and then at P.G.D.’s office to bring the parents closer to the moment they are forced to leave their kid and their son would finally have some freedom. As unpacking started, the campers would start feeling more at home while the parents would slowly have to let go. Unpacking would soon be over and parents

and counselors would have their small conversation and than it would be over, parents would say their last goodbye and their kids would start their summer. Parents would be gone and all that would be left is a young boy ready for his summer at Camp Avoda, with his “second family.” By Jake Eagle

4th of JULY

Every

year Camp Avoda celebrates the 4th of July with a carnival as well as other fun activities. The festivities were kicked off with the second annual hot dog eating contest, featuring several kitchen boys, camper Justin Feinberg, a few staff members, and reigning champion Jared Fixler. After 8 minutes of inhaling hot dog, Barney out of the kitchen captured the title. The next few hours consisted of campers enjoying the booths, food, and the inflatable rides Avoda had to offer. The field

was then cleared for the day’s main event: Avoda Gladiators. Pitting members of Bunk 12 and 14 in competition against staff members, this event proved to be a thrilling series of games with Bunk 14 enforcing its dominance in the end. As the sky faded to black, everyone shifted to the beach, where a magnificent bonfire awaited. Bunk 14 had spent the prior night constructing “The Passage,” a bonfire that was constructed in the form of a small cabin. The name “The Passage” represented

the 14ers’ journeys as campers over the past nine years. Representatives from each bunk, as well as staff and alumni, shared what camp means to them. These speeches were heartfelt and defined what everyone sees as Avodians. As the fire died down, bursts of fireworks erupted in the sky, ending another awesome 4th of July.

69

FLAGRUSH

Opening Day had finally

come to an end and as dinner finished up, everyone with hearts pounding anticipated the announcement of the evening activity. As Jared Fixler and Jared Fogel announced the Opening Night Flagrush, the camp cheered as they were informed that they would play their favorite activity. The evening activity coordinators read off the teams and captains. Captains for the White team were Ben Shale and Bryce Tischler. The captains for the Blue team were Will Holtz and Josh Polasky. The game started off with quick flags scored by Will Holtz and Bryce

70

Tischler. As the first half continued, White trotted ahead with a substantial lead by the stellar defense of Ben Shale. Blue’s offense, lead by Will Holtz and Shay Wenglin, made a strong comeback at the end of the first half by scoring a half-dozen flags to tie the game up going into the second half. The second half started with a barrage of White flags being scored by Ryan Litner and Adam Lorimer. Half way into the second half, Blue made a miraculous comeback with triple flags scored by Sam Lefkowitz and his lightning speed. As time winded down, White was sure that they had won. However the Refs

determined that the game was tied and would go into penalty rushes. The first White rush, taken by Adam Lorimer, was scored as Lorimer sped past Josh Polasky. Then the Blue rush came and was taken by Will Holtz. He brought it all the way to the line as his sock was pulled miraculously at the line. White won and they sprinted to second base to chant that they were number one.

ZOOBALL

D

inner came to an end, the banging on the table increased in a crescendo while campers waited for the announcement of the evening activity. Adam Miller and a handful of counselors gathered in a circle and yelled “its zoo ball!!!!” After the cheering from the campers, teams were announced and Blue captains Wes Fixler and Ryan Litner were ready to take on White captains Will Parvin and Jonathan Mondererererer. The game started out close. White scoring one goal than Blue answering right back with a point. Half time came and each team had a few freshman/ sophomores take penalty shots. The second half

began and White started strong. It came to the end and White had a small lead and it was time for penalty kicks. Blue would have to score every shot to win. Blue’s first shooter Wes Fixler stepped up. He ran up to take his shot and everybody’s head turned to look at the net to see the ball but the ball never even made it to the

goalies. Everybody makes mistakes so Wes was given another chance. His second shot was better but not good enough as it was stopped by the goalies. The game may have been over but all was well at Avoda and everybody was ready for a new day with new experiences. By Jake Eagle

E

t the beginning of the First Session, anticipation was building for the first trip of the summer. Everyone knew the trip was going to be to a water park. Historically, this trip had been to Water Wizz, but last year it was to Water Country creating uncertainty in the campers minds as to which water park they would go to. On the trip to Water Country last year, the four-hour round trip drive and long lines for rides disappointed the campers. Therefore, when administration hinted that this summer’s trip would be to Water Country, their voices were drowned out by the boos of many angry campers. Finally, the day before the trip, Leon approached the podium during dinner and announced that the trip would be to “Water…Wizz!” The mess hall erupted into cheers. The next day, everyone boarded the buses for the short ride to Wareham. Once there, campers enjoyed McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and D’Angelo’s for lunch, then headed into the park. Once inside, everyone enjoyed rides such as the Lazy River, Wave Pool, Squid Row, The Canal, Hurricane Hill, and, for some daredevils, The Pirate’s Plunge. At the end of the day, everyone boarded the buses back to camp, concluding a successful first trip of the summer.

arly in the morning on Thursday, July 25, fifteen campers and four counselors hopped in the vans and headed to Jaffrey, NH, the home of Mount Monadnock. After a quick lunch, everyone headed up the trail to the peak, 3200 feet above sea level. Although it was raining on the drive up, the weather was cool and sunny on the mountain, perfect for climbing. The climb up was fairly difficult, and was described as, “Climbing an endless stairway” but everyone made it to the top in one piece. At the peak, we relaxed and enjoyed the amazing views of the surrounding countryside. After an hour or so at the summit, we began walking down the trail. During the first part of the climb down, the mountain was solid rock and most of us had to slide down. A few people tripped on the wet rocks, but thankfully there were no major injuries. The climb got easier as we got below the timberline and into the woods, and the mountain became less steep. Exhausted, we finally reached the bottom, where we returned to the vans. To avoid rush hour traffic going into Boston, we sacrificed the traditional trip to Fire and Ice and were instead rewarded for our hard work with Chinese food at Samba West in Framingham. After a great dinner, we drove back to camp, concluding another great Monadnock trip.

Camp Avoda rolled up to Kimball Farms and was ready

for a day of fun! Mini golf, bumper boats, an arcade were only the tip of the iceberg. After all the fun, everyone enjoyed homemade ice cream from the Kimball Farms dairy. Time came to leave but campers resisted to stay. Apparently they had too much fun and wanted more but unfortunately the time had come to load the buses. By Jake Eagle

On a Tuesday afternoon in late July, Avodians

gladly welcomed the news that the whole camp would be heading to Boston for a Red Sox game. After the day passed by and campers boarded the busses and vans, Avodians arrived at Fenway Park, where the hometown team would face the Mariners in an American League battle. For Red Sox fans, the game was thrilling as the Sox crushed the Mariners behind a gem pitched by Brandon Workman. Also, Boston sluggers were smacking the ball all over the field resulting in 8 runs. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Dustin Pedroia all hit homeruns in the offensive onslaught.Throughout the ballgame, campers and staff cheered for the Red Sox as if it was an Avoda tournament. Additionally, Avodians were welcomed by several alumni, who came to cheer alongside their fellow Avodians. Together, everyone rooted for the home team in their 8-2 victory. Following an exciting evening of cheering, laughing, and eating, all of Avoda departed Fenway and headed back to camp.

summer, freshman/sophomore league saw some of its most competitive games in a while. With a mid-season merger, the league featured four super stacked teams that never failed to disappoint. Emotions often ran high during competition and the games attracted crowds of people. Nevertheless, the Tiberius Honeybadgers came out on top of the regular season with an 18-11 record, with the Haifa Horned Frogs in a close second at 17-12 and the Jerusalem Jaguars following close behind at 16-13. The Eilat Alligators were last but not least, and recognition should still be made toward the Beersheba Baboons and Tel Aviv Titans, the teams dismissed from the league. In the end, league was another big success and we enjoyed working with all of the players and coaches.

J

unior Senior league was an extremely close, grueling competition that lasted throughout the whole summer of 2013. Every day during 6th period, teams would battle it out to prove their dominance over the rest of the camp. Since Leon made me submit this article insanely early, I cannot speak to who the winners and losers of league were. However, I can tell you that 2013 brought out some of the greatest league performances seen in years, in each and every sport. With two unbelievably good looking commissioners and incredibly talented referees, Junior Senior league solidified itself as one of the highlights of the summer.

Tuesday,

July 16, the evening activity of JC Fear factor came to an end and all the bunks circled up for the Avoda alma mater, except Bunk 14 who was horsing around and yelling. Gary Rabinowitz stepped up to tell them to cut it out and “lead by example.” The upset Bunk 14 members bursted out in chant “Gary in the lake, Gary in the lake.” Gary was out numbered and swarmed by the campers. He was carried to where the non-bunk 14’ers couldn’t see so Gary could personally jump in the lake to simulate him being thrown in. The bunk 14 members stormed out from the waterfront to announce the long awaited Desert war. The morning came and the campers ran to line up at the flag. Soon after teams were said and teams blue and white lined up on opposite sides of the path. Captains walked down, both teams waiting to find out who their captains were. Ben Shale and Will Holtz jumped to the blue side and Louis Yarmolinsky and Bryce Tischler jumped to the white side. Campers went crazy than quieted to hear their captain’s inspirational pre game speech. After all the staff including the lieutenants and generals were announced, teams went to their base. The time came and the White Mob was

86 6

on the field stretching done with pre game warmup while the Blue Gorillas storm out on the field filled with energy after their warm-up, all while Head Judge Jake Dennis readied the Pink Refs for a long day. Warm ups finished with the shouting and intensity from the teams and than players spread out to their positions. Then the countdown over the P.A. system counted “…3…2…1…” and there it was, the start of the 2013 desert war, 4 hours of intense flag rush, strong defense and intense heat. The first quarter was a small lead by Blue and an amazing game played by both teams. This was followed by a second quarter of strong play by both teams but one of the best offensive desert wars played from the Blue time ending with a lead from Blue. Both teams went into lunch only hoping for the best the second half ready to put forth all the effort they can give to go for the win knowing that it is the Bunk 14ers last Desert War. Not only do all the campers wasn’t to win it for themselves but also for the Bunk 14ers on their team that wont ever be able to play again. The second half started after team organization, the Blue Gorillas going into it with a small lead. The 3rd quarter started and Blue was ready after their amazing 2nd

quarter to do it again but White was ready to defend. Both played the 3rd quarter very defensively but the Blue team came put above again with a strong lead from all the quarters but White was not going to give up. The plans were made and White gave their inspirational speech and as did the Blue captains and Blue was ready to defend he lead while White wanted to come back and win. The final quarter had started and right off the start white had rushed and was ready to put forth every last bit of energy they could harness. But Blue stood tall and ready to stop White’s strong offense. The final countdown to the end of Desert War came and Blue knowing they had the lead ran to the lake ready to celebrate their win. The team staff members ran down the docks and campers splashed and celebrated and after the campers filed out of the lake and took their victory lap, all that was left was the staff and the Bunk 14ers who wanted to cherish their last ever desert war they would ever play in. At the end of the day, having won or lost, everybody had a great day and another great day at camp Avoda had finished and another day was on its way. By Jake Eagle

Back for this summer Full of these questions What will I do When were apart

Began in Bunk 1 Alone and afraid Who would have thought We’d come this far

Never imagined This may be the last time Together we stand Arm and arm

Led camp in 14 Together and strong But they say its only just begun

We were once strangers Leaving as brothers Grown up together As one We say our goodbyes Not sure of the next time We’ll be at Avoda Again

We know leaving won’t be easy It’s just a shame that it’s this hard Driving down Gibbs for the last time Wish that I could go back and begin Avoda runs through my heart

Now as an SC It is clear to me My time at Avoda Is Done All the small moments We’ve shared every summer Will be remembered Forever

We know leaving wont be easy It’s just a shame that it’s this hard Singing these songs for the last time Lets break down these benches and go back the start Avoda runs through my heart

White Prophets Alma Mater

to the tune of

“Somewhere over the Rainbow” by Isreal Kamamawiwo’ole

Think back Days at Avoda Long ago Eyes Closed Feeling of camp grows Way back when time moved slow

Chorus: Avoda’s made me who I am I don’t know if I can stand a day Without you My troubles melt into the sun I’ll stay brothers with everyone After, our time’s through

Lineup Roll out of bed to Our flagpole

Brothers Are all that matters Bonds will last

Sunrise Lighting up camp skies Warming Avoda’s soul

I cry Thinking of goodbye Our time is fading fast

Chorus: Avoda’s made me who I am I don’t know if I can stand a day Without you My troubles melt into the sun I’ll stay brothers with everyone After, our time’s through

This place Like the most perfect Work of art I know Wherever I go Avoda is in my heart

Oh that Incredible feeling When you’ve won Camp pride Swelling up inside I’ll miss it when I’m done I see Avoda’s spirit As I roam White Blue Flows through me and you This is my one true home

Bunk 1: Its been an amazing

summer. I could not have asked for better co’s and campers. Coming into the summer we knew we wanted bunk 1, but once we heard it was going to happen, I immediately knew it was going to be a blast. The first month campers were great, and I hope all you guys had just as much fun as we did. I plan on seeing all you guys next summer for two months instead of one. Although there was only four of you, the second month campers were just as good. Noah and Alex I hope you guys had fun, and were able to see why this camp is so great. Max and Bennit you guys were a pleasure to have in the bunk for the whole summer. AJ and Harrison: I cannot even express how amazing it was running bunk 1 with you guys this year. We had so many good times I cant even remember any of them right now. AJ, I wish you the best of luck next year. No matter what happens your going to be successful in life. I’ve never

seen someone so dedicated and determined to do somethingyou should be proud of yourself already. H, I can’t wait to see you this year up at Wisco. When you come were going to be TRIING TIEE. I hope you guys enjoy senior year because it goes by fast. 2K1014: I love you guys. I hope we don’t loose anyone next summer, I know we got at least one more year left in us. Blue Goblins: I can’t wait to spend this next week with you guys. Thank you so much for the opportunity. Even though we’ve been faced with some obstacles I am confident were going to win this war. Admin: Although you may not know it, I appreciate everything you guys have done this summer. Camp would not be so great with out you guys. I’m keeping it short and sweet this year, but to everyone else have a good off-season. Thanks for all the good times this year, I cant wait for the many more to come.

As I sit here writing my first staff

profile as a JC, I get to look back at the summer and acknowledge the moments and memories that flew by way too fast. After a long and grueling junior year of high school, it was the best feeling to escape my hometown and come here. Going into my first year on staff, I had heard a number of different stories but did not actually know what was to come. After my 14 summer, I found it hard to believe that Avoda could get any better, but I was completely wrong. This summer I learned that 14 year is not the end, rather the beginning to a new chapter in one’s “Avoda cycle”. It all starts over once approaching staff because anyone has a chance to make a new name for them self. This summer has been one of the best yet, and I am fortunate enough to say that I will be back for many more. AJ and Tilly: I can’t believe we ended up together. I couldn’t imagine bunk 1 without you guys. Although taking on bunk 1 was a whole new learning experience for two JC’s and a first year SC, I think we can give ourselves a pat on the back because we did a “world-class” job. AJ, we’ve been boys since 2005 and I am blown away at the commitment you have made this summer to Naval Academy. I know things will work out for you, good luck, love you

man. Tilly, I’m so glad that we’ve grown a lot closer this summer. Good luck next year at Wisco! There is a chance that I may make it there too. Thank you both for a great summer. Bunk 1: You guys were awesome all summer. We have definitely had our rough patches throughout the summer, but you are all a great group of kids and the future looks bright. Gink and Gonk on boys.

Leon: Your hard work and devotion to Avoda often goes unnoticed. Thanks you for everything you do for this place and thank you for everything you do for me.

’10: I’m glad both my 14 and your 14 have gotten a lot closer this summer. We made a nice transition from campers to staff members, and I know all of us are looking forward to leading staff in the years to come.

2011 Bunk 14: You all are the reason I keep coming back. You guys make this place for me.We’ve all come such a long way since 14 year, and I am so glad that we all have such great camaraderie. I hope you all will be back for many more because I couldn’t imagine Avoda without you guys.

08: Thank you all for showing us the ropes this summer. You guys did a great job running the show, and for those of you who won’t make it back next summer, good luck with whatever it is you will do. Blue Goblins: Goblin’s staff, you guys have been awesome so far. Great job with all the preparation, I look forward to an awesome week. Let’s go Gobs! Admin: Kudos to you all for running another successful summer here at Avoda. Can’t wait until next summer!

As my ninth summer at

Avoda has come and gone in the blink of an eye, I look back at how grateful I am to have spent my time here in Middleboro. Coming into JC year, I really did not know what to expect; and with so many other things on my mind involving home life, camp served as the best break from the daily grind. This past school year was intense, as being a junior in high school requires so much diligence and hard work. Being back at Avoda really made me realize how great of a place it really is, because reality is a lot less enjoyable. I am so happy to have made so many new memories with my fellow staff members. As a new chapter begins in my life, I will always look back at this summer and reflect upon some of the best moments that I have ever experienced. Wherever I end up by the end of this year, whether it be at the Naval Academy or not, I do want to thank the entire staff for helping me improve myself this summer and work towards my goal. The road ahead is definitely foggy for me, but as I seek to achieve my goals, I will always represent the A-V-O-D-A in everything that I do.

To all Avodians- I love you all. H-Bizzle and Tillot- I was so ecstatic the day you guys sent me a text saying that we should talk to Ken and see if we can be cocounselors in Bunk 1 together… I never thought that it would actually happen. It was such a blast to have shared my first year on staff with you guys and I would do it all again with you. We had so much fun designing our new 5-star hotel area including a fridge, pantry, and shoe closet. Thanks for all the good times, I hope you guys make some progress with GSP in the offseason… keep it tight. Bunk 1-You guys were undoubtedly the best bunk in camp this summer. I was so excited to hear that I would be getting the youngest guys in camp and finally become a gink-gonker myself this summer! I could not have asked for anything else from you guys, it was so much fun being your counselor. We had some great times together and I hope you all come back to camp next year. See you then! Team Avoda: At the beginning of the summer I was really trying to convince Dan and AK that I would be a great assistant coach for the team. After receiving the job, I only had one thought in my head: 4-pete. To be honest, early in the season I did not think our team compared to the past three teams that won the Avoda Tournament, but after crushing at

the Bournedale tournament, I was so confident. A week before the tourney we all felt complacent and lazy, but as the day approached you guys really kicked it into 5th gear. Those grueling under-a-minutes and burpees were all worth it boys. So anyways… 5-Pete? 2k1114: Men, we survived. Our first year on staff was a success. I really appreciate all the support you guys gave me this summer towards reaching my future goals. I may or may not be back next summer as you guys know; but either way, I will live each day with a place in my heart for every one of you. You guys made me into the man I am today and I love you all for that. I hope you guys are successful this year. Love y’all. ithout a doubt this summer has been the most fun summer I have had yet. As a camper I never expected to be on staff, As a camper I never expected to be on staff, but during my CIT year I quickly realized what a mistake it would be to not experience what it would be like to be an Avoda staff member. Being on staff has exceeded my expectations from the first moment of precamp. My JC year has treated me very well and I look forward to returning next year. Matt Friedman: It has been great being your co-counselor this summer with our all time high of seven campers. It was great gettting to know you this summer and I enjoyed all our runs thoroughly. 2k11: Guys, it’s been another amazing summer, best one yet. I hope to keep in touch with all of you over the offseason. We finna.

can’t believe that the summer of 2013 is already winding down. It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re at camp. Weeks feel like days here, and before you know it, the summer is over and its time to go back home. This offseason is going to be very different for me than in the past. Instead of coming home and hanging out with friends or whatever else I would be doing, I need to get ready for college. It’s going to be a big change, but by winter time I know that I’ll still be thinking about AVODA. This summer has been incredible, and I wouldn’t change it for anything. Being a Senior Counselor was awesome and I am starting to move up in the ranks of Avoda Staff with my 14. In a couple years it’ll be our time to show camp what we got. Robbie and Ari- I honestly had no idea what to expect when I found out you two were my Co-Counselors (especially since both of you missed precamp). You guys were awesome this summer and I hope I showed you how to be the best counselors you can be. You both come back next summer, you won’t regret it. Bunk 3- While at times you guys were very crazy, you’re all awesome kids and true avodians. I had a blast being your counselor this summer. While it may seem like a long way away to your 14

year, it comes up fast. Don’t take your summers here for granted 2010 14- 27 to 21 to 10 and now 9. You guys are my brothers and the reason I keep coming back to camp summer after summer. Every year we get closer and closer as an age group, and while we lost some kids on the way, the group of guys we have here are my best friends. If any of you are in the Maryland area hit me up and I’ll try to make it up to chill with you guys at least a couple times in the offseason and then we’ll kick it in Israel. You all better be back next summer, because you know I will. GeorgeAnother summer another shout-out. I’m so glad that you were across the hall again this summer. I didn’t think we could get any closer this summer, but from Battle of the Super Teams, to Assistant Head Judge, to everything else, you’re my boy. Come back next year, you won’t regret it. Matt- you were the first friend I made at camp way back in 5a 2006. We’ve had a hell of a ride to get to where we are now. I hope you come back next summer, but I’ll try to make the trip up to Natick in the offseason. 2009 14- N/A 2008 14- I got to know you all a lot better this summer. You are all awesome people with unique personalities. You guys led the camp and made the summer what it was. Jason- We did a

fantastic job in the archives this summer. Ben- While you weren’t at camp for most of the summer, you still made your presence known. I’m glad that you were able to come back for the last week or so of the summer and take a break from the real world. Admin- Without you guys, camp would not be able to run. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to come back to camp this summer. Bunk 14- Awesome job this summer. You guys did a great job in leading the camp and it shows. All of you should do your best to come back to be a part of staff, you won’t regret it. CITs- You guys made it. It all gets better from here. Keep on coming back and have a good offseason. JCs- I hope you all had a good time this summer for your first year on staff. Good work this summer. It’s been real AVODA. 10 months and counting until we meet again.

I am currently writing this profile

in my living room as I sit here sick with an unknown virus, dreading every moment, wanting only to come back to the place I love more than anything in the world. However, in a way I appreciate this break from paradise because it taught me just how boring and uneventful my summer would be without Avoda, making me love and cherish it so much more. About 8 years ago, Avoda took me in and gave me a home for the summer. I had no idea what to expect as a bunk 3’er being away from home for what started out as only half of my summer. It wasn’t long before I walked straight up to Mr. Davis begging to call my mom and double my time here hoping to spend my entire summer at A-VO-D-A. I can easily say that Camp Avoda has been the best decision I have ever made. The only thing I regret about this place was not finding out about it sooner. Each year that I have returned seems to outweigh the previous year which i never think could be possible going into the summer. Camp has shaped me into the Robbie Katz that you guys all know today and it has taught me many extremely valuable life lessons that I will keep with me for the rest of my life. Not gonna lie, I wasn’t 100% certain

106 6

that i’d be back here this summer, but looking back on it now, I am certain i made the right choice. Being a counselor is quite the shift from being a camper or a C.I.T but I think I finally have a good grip on it and I love it just as much if not more. If I could give one piece of advice to you all, I would simply tell you to come back for as long as you can. And when you think you’ve had enough or you have other life plans in the way, make time for Avoda and come back anyways. We are unbelievably lucky to belong to such an amazing community that many of us don’t even realize just how great this place is. My friends back home continue to nag me about all the fun i’m missing back home, but let me tell you...... They have NOOOOOOOO idea what they’re missing out on . You know what time it is? Time for some shoutouts.. 2K11 Bunk 14- Wow... where do I begin ? To say that you are the main reason I return each summer is putting it lightly. You guys are amazing . You guys are some of the best friends I have and not to mention the realest ones. I can go to you guys for anything. Whether it’s advice, or for laughs, or if we SOOOOOO FINNNAAA at any point in the day, I just can’t get enough. I can’t wait to run the camp with you guys in a few years and it already feels like were naturals. We are all only growing closer to eachother and it feels amazing. Camps nothing without my boys. Love you all.. WE OUT!?! Bunk 3- You guys were the perfect bunk to have while i get the hang of

this counseling thing. Their isn’t a single kid in this bunk I would trade for anyone. I will never forget our many laughs, games, and food sharing we did a lot of in the bunk. You all are some smart, funny, talented athletes and i’m looking forward to seeing you guys grow up into Bunk 14 together. Have each others back your entire avoda career and then some and i promise you guys will be friends for life. You guys are each your own character which is perfect and hilarious to watch as you interact with eachother. Unfortunately, this illness has made it impossible for me to be there with you this past week but i will be back home to Avoda by the time you read this and we’ll probably have more memories by then. Good Luck on either Team and keep your heads up! 2K8 Bunk 14-You guys definately pushed me to my limits as a staff member and even past them. I loved every second of being on staff a lot of that credit goes to you guys. Thank you for some fun times and some even better memories. Modey-(Mistah Modesauce)(Etna Mode), Bissy-(Young Biss), Kahan (Young Kinny) , Holtzy-(Atam Bam) ---We were without a doubt the top 5 on the list. Keep coming back so we can continue to get closer and closer and we should ABSOLUTELY all chill in the off season. I will sincerely miss you all. Love you boys.

More than any summer before,

this season at Camp Avoda has flown by. I remember stressing out about having to juggle finals at school and arriving at camp in the same day, and already the summer is coming to a close. Being on staff this year has certainly been a privilege, and this summer has been one of the best I’ve had at camp. It seems that, after spending six years as a camper and then another as a CIT, being on staff is the culmination of the Avoda experience. Being able to give back to camp and see everything from the other side has been great this summer. As a camper, I never really saw myself coming back to be on staff, but I couldn’t be more pleased with my decision. At the end of every summer, it’s impossible to accept that it’s my last day at this place, and I hope to be back for as many more summers as I can.

Aaron and Robbie: It was great working with you guys this summer. I think we did an awesome job together with bunk 3, even when they didn’t want to listen to us. It’s been a busy summer, but we made the most of it. It’s been real. 2011 Bunk 14: I was thrilled to see so many of us back this year on staff. We had a blast being JCs together, and it’s good to know that we’re all here for each other. I love you all, and I’m glad we’re able to continue our camp experience together. I can’t wait to see all of you back next year to be on staff together again. I love you guys.

Bunk 3: My first bunk as a camper in 2006 was bunk 3, and then my first bunk last year as a CIT was bunk 3, so it only seems fitting that this year I am the counselor for bunk 3. You guys were great this year, even though I had to move into bunk 4 so you could all fit into the bunk. I had a great time playing shoulders and zoom and mafia and just spending time with you. I hope to see you all back at camp next year.

This past summer at camp has

been one of the most exciting and enjoyable summers I have ever experienced. In all honesty I never thought I would make it to staff but each year I couldn’t resist coming back to Avoda. It’s been a great summer for everyone and I still cannot believe that it’s already coming to an end. Hopefully I’ll be back next year to pick up where I left off and have another amazing summer. 2K10: I was so pumped when I found out the crew that was coming back this year. I doubt any of you are reading this but if you do stumble upon this, then know I had a great time being your counselor. I think everyone in the bunk learned a lot about themselves this year, including myself. I hope to be seeing all you guys back next year so don’t disappoint. Ropes Staff: Joey, Miklos, and Benny:You were all great mentors, keep kickin’ it boys. Aaron Rubin: I’ve known you for 11 years now, and the fact that we’re still at camp together is absurd. Apparently you knew how to spell absurd all along… anyway, we’ve had some crazy times this summer and it’s only going to get better. Hopefully we’ll be in shape for track this upcoming season from all the running we’ve been doing… I’ll see you this Thanksgiving most likely, and good job in our 2v2 game against Or and Zaff. 8 years from the start of my Avoda career, I sit here schoulsted writing my first counselor profile. Going into this summer I was a little nervous about being a counselor for the first time, but being a JC this summer was one of the best experiences of my life. Looking back at my first year on staff all I can do is smile and reminisce in all of the great memories. Although being a counselor is sometimes difficult, there isn’t anything else I’d rather have done this summer. Avoda is my second home. s my ninth summer at camp Avoda comes to a close, all I can think about is how lucky I am I found this place. Since my first summer in ‘05, I have created a group of unbelievable friends that I will have for the rest of my life. Being a camper at Avoda is a special experience.l Last summer was a transition for me at camp, it was the first year that I was on staff. I was disappointed that I would no longer be able play in a game of zooball or flagrush. But last summer I quickly realized that staff is just as fun as being a camper. Being an Sc this summer has been even better. It is a great feeling to give back to a place that was so important to me when I was younger. Avoda is a the best place in the world for campers and counselors and I hope I can comeback for as long as possible. And now the shout-outs Kagan: I didn’t know you that well before the summer and to be honest I wasn’t sure what to expect when I heard u were my co. But we have held this bunk down

Although some of the time you guys didn’t get along great I really believe that can change and you guys can become great individuals and great as a group as you become juniors next year. Benny- I really enjoyed being your co this summer. Even though we has a lot to handle I think we held the fort down. Good luck with school and volleyball this year. Wes- I was so glad that I was able to see you in bunk 14 this summer leading this camp and help lead your 14. The future looks bright at this place for you, keep coming

back because every summer gets better and better from here on out. I can’t wait for you to visit me at UNH next summer! 2010 Bunk 14- What a ride it has been together, I did not expect to have 9 of us back this summer. It was amazing to spend the summer together. Each year we get closer together and especially this summer. I can’t wait to visit all of you next year at college. Fogel- Although we will be up against each other this week which is going to be really hard to do this has been one of the best summers ever. We did a great job running evening activities and League this summer. It was amazing to be together during the Superbowl run this year which capped it all off. Good luck at UVA this fall. I can’t wait to see you at the thanksgiving football game! Blue Goblins- Jason, first I want to thank you for the opportunity you gave me to be a part of this team. Jason, Brendan,Plotty, Tilly, Harrison, Drew, Shaggy, there is no doubt we can win this, and I can’t wait to jump in the lake with you guys. Staff- This was yet again a really fun summer. I truly enjoyed spending each day with you guys, and

can’t wait to see everyone in the offseason. Admin- I want to thank you for the opportunity to come back this summer. Your guidance has really made me a better counselor.

The moment where Leon nags

me about my counselor profile is finally here! As my 8th summer winds down at dear A-V-O-D-A, I find myself reminiscing the friendships, hardships, and memories that have shaped the person who I am today. I find it hard to write a staff profile that doesn’t end in me saying “cherish your time here at Camp Avoda”.That means for you, my reader, you will hear the message again. CHERISH YOUR TIME AT CAMP AVODA. Why do I say that? Because the past 8 years flew by me in the blink of the eye. As much as I thought it was fun as a camper, I still regret all the periods I skipped, slept through, or sat out of. 2k11: Who’s fin? I always read these shoutouts and remember them being filled of inside jokes, so I’m gonna do the same. All of you guys are my best friends. Every single one of you. Whether we’re in an argument about which laundromat I was suppose to bring your laundry, or flailing fists at each other, we always seem to get past it. I hope we stay more connected this offseason than we did last. Let’s keep coming back and run the crap out of staff. LOVE YOU ALL. STAY SHULSTED. Bunk 5b: You guys were a great bunk. No lie. We had our ups and downs, and certainly a lot of downs, but we made it a great summer. Maybe I’ll be your counselor again next summer. ‘TAMATER COME TO THE MESS HALL,

TAMATER COME TO THE MESS HALL”. Fixler: Well Fix, I think we can both agree that we shared equal time at table during the meals. Okay for real, I had a great summer. Thank you for teaching me the ways of being a great counselor. We’ve become a lot closer over the past two years and I am happy we became good friends. Let’s keep in touch and have a great time at UNH. Ropes Staff: So.. I didn’t really have a ropes period all summer, but I still consider myself on ropes staff. Why not right? Kahan and Simmons: I had a great time this summer in the best cabin in camp. We chilled hard and ran an awesome cabin. Simmons, the overnight was dope, let’s do it next year too. All Nerds World Wide: Nerd. Holtz: Holtzy, I’m writing this profile the night of our big step up the ladder of staff. Let’s become the game. I’m really happy how close we became this summer. Love you buddy. Treefrog and Swoto:You guys are right next to me as I write this.. So I’ll give you a shoutout. List’s top 5: You know who you are.We all share the head of shulst.

The entire off-season I dreamed

of the moment when my car would take the right off of Tispaquin and turn onto the dirt and bumpy Gibbs Road. The change from asphalt to gravel signified the change from my home in Newton to my summer home. I had no idea what my first summer on staff and 10th year at camp would have in store. All I knew was that this summer was going to be very different than my previous nine. I have embraced my role of being a counselor and accepted the fact that I am no longer able to play and participate in the activities that made me love Avoda so much. With that being said, this summer has been filled with nothing but great memories. Avoda was the perfect reward to a long and stressful Junior year. Bunk 6A- There is no bunk that I would rather be a counselor of than bunk 6A. I think it safe to say that we were the cleanest bunk in camp this summer. My fingers are crossed for Kosher Kabin First month started off great with dance parties every night. 6A was filled with a great group of kids that liked to have fun. I hope our 15 minutes of designated of Bar Mitzvah practice help you all have a successful day. Mazel Tov boychick! Joco- Being a co with you has been awesome. I feel that I have learned so much about being a counselor from you. Sharing a

bunk might not have been ideal but it was sure a good time. 2k11- Our JC summer is in the books boys. We made it with only a few bumps, cuts, concussions, and countless memories. I can’t wait for us to be running staff in a few years. We have an incredible group of kids that are great for Avoda. I hope everyone comes back for at least on more year. It’s going to be hard to assimilate to real English after this summer but I’m okay with that…nerd. Good luck to you all in getting into college. Blue Gorillas- Thank you Jason and Brendan for giving me that opportunity to be on this team. Our hard work rewarded us with a great team. It was awesome hanging with the 08 for a week. I will never forget that day.

I’m so proud of you. Congratulations on becoming a two-time captain, you made mom very happy. I know it seems that our lives are always a competition, so I guess you might be in the lead, but not for long.

SC Bunk 6B • 2008 Bunk 14 • 5th Lt White Mob • Waterfront Staff • Sr Softball Coach • Head of Weights • Head of AV be my last summer at this place.

This past offseason when I would think

about the upcoming summer, I would get the chills. I had mixed feelings knowing that my fourteen would be the oldest on staff, running camp. One side of me was pumped to run camp as well as be the leaders on staff with my boys, the other side was uneasy knowing that this could be the last summer that we are all together at this amazing place. The upcoming summer was always a topic of discussion whether I was visiting the crew at ZooMass, or hanging out with Deuce, Joco, and Strachman at my house. Coming into this summer we all had our goals of what we wanted to accomplish. I would definitely say we all reached those goals. It’s a weird feeling to think that this could be the last profile I ever write, and that my Avoda career is over. This place and the people I have bonded with are what made me the person I have become today. I hope that this isn’t our last summer, and that we can all be back for one last summer. I will remember all the memories created here for the rest of my life. Avoda will always be my home, and that will never change. Matt Glick – I’m not gunna lie glick, but when I arrived at camp and found out that you were my co, I was thinking that this summer might not live up to its potential. Let me just say that you exceeded well beyond my expectations. You were a riot in the bunk, always cracking jokes, and made every time in the bunk enjoyable. Our bunk wouldn’t have been the same without you. I’m glad that you were my co for what could

116 6

Bunk 6B – I would have to say that you guys were the best group of campers I have had while on staff. I didn’t really know your age group before this summer, and it was nice getting to know each of you. Ethan, Zac, Pauly, Turner, Spencer, and Gabe you guys are true avodians. I am happy you all stayed for the entire summer. Keep coming back to because you guys are going to be the leaders here in the upcoming summers. ’08 14 – The amount that I could say would take up my entire profile, so I am just going to get to the point. You guys are what keeps me going every summer. The bond we all have as a fourteen is something truly special. Anytime I have needed someone to talk to no matter the situation, I can talk to anyone of you. That’s a feeling that very few people in this world have. Every summer the good times just keep on rolling, and I hope they can continue. At this point we have left our mark on this place, and the ’08 will be remembered forever. Staff – It was awesome getting to know each of you. I feel that I have definitely gotten closer with a lot of you. It is a good feeling to know that this place will continue to run the way it should, as you guys will be leading for the upcoming summers. Deuce – Where do I even begin. We kicked it a good amount this summer, and as always it’s a great time. You’re my boy and you will always be my boy. You have been there for me, and you know that if you ever need anything I got you. We will definitely be chillin before you go to school, and of course when school starts I will be visiting you and the crew at the Zoo. Friedman – We continued the good times from where we left off last summer.

You know how to be a true friend, and that’s something unique. You are another one of my close friends that whenever I need someone to talk to, you’re there for me. We have been talking about it for so long now, and finally it is right around the corner; EZOO is gunna be ridiculous. I cannot wait to go HAM with you and the rest of the crew going. Obviously I will be visiting you and the crew at the Zoo, letting the good times continue to roll. Strachman – It started back when we were co’s in bunk 3. This summer wouldn’t have been the same if we didn’t chill as much as we did. You have always been one of my best friends, and will continue to be. As I said in my previous shout out, you are also someone who knows how to be a true friend. EZOO is gunna be one hell of a time…LEGGO. Miklos – We have always been close friends, and we definitely had good times this summer. Keep being yourself because that’s what makes you the true friend you are. AK – You are the reason I continued coming back to this place year after year, and I thank you for sticking by my side since day one. I will be down to URI to visit you and plotty the next time AEPi throws down. Bros for life, stay piff. Admin – You guys keep this place running smoothly summer after summer. There were the ups and downs of the summer, but I feel that we all came out on top. I know that the upcoming summers will continue the traditions and brotherhood at the place that we all call home. Dot Dots – Laps on laps on laps…commenced…getting swoll…supplements… SICKKKKK…the lab…AK’s 21st… THERE HE IS …red sox trip…Tibet… guess what day it is…its speare day… DJing whenever possible…HAAAAAA

“ ife is tough, get a helmet.” Not exactly sure where I heard this quote, but it is a quote I appreciate. Even at Avoda, this unique and truly incredible place, most people have obstacles they must overcome. For some it is homesickness, for others it is being shy, and some deal with a severe lack of athleticism. Obviously there are some exceptions, those whose names are engraved on the Leadership Trophies or found on some other item in the Archives. However, for the rest of us, it can be a struggle. Some are overwhelmed by the challenges they face and they can be found in the “Drop-outs” section of the Avodian. But those who persist, become better people because of it. For me, the challenge was just fitting in. I was never shy, if anything my boisterous nature is to blame for why I never felt like I was a true Avodian. I looked at myself as different, and saw that as a problem. My real problem was that I saw being different as a problem. I tried to be many things that I wasn’t: a talented athlete, a genius, I even tried out being skinny one year. The one thing I didn’t try was being myself. Now I look at myself and I am satisfied with who I have become. I am witty, I am bold and I am passionate. I have found my niche at Camp Avoda and I hope this helps someone who is in a similar situation as I was.

Now for shoutouts: Bunk 6B- You guys truly were a great bunk. You listened well, you cleaned well, and most importantly you got along with each other well. I hope you enjoyed this summer as much as I did and I hope to see you all again next year. Golov-Thank you for being a great co this summer. You helped me learn how to be a counselor and for that I am grateful. I hope to see you and the rest of your 14 back next summer. Avodian Staff- Good times. Joey you put a lot of work into the Avodian and it shows. I hope the final copy comes out as well as we all hope it does. 2k11 14- Our first year on staff is complete. Crazy, huh? Keep being entitled, keep schulsting, keep being characters, keep coming back and most importantly—keep in touch.

We had some crazy times together this summer and I’m hoping we continue them next summer. Jake, Swoto and I got you food plenty… Stop complaining.

This place is the best place on

earth. At the start of this summer I had so many mixed emotions-it was hard for me to graduate and to basically understand I wouldn’t be returning to Acton once I got to camp. The combination of me wanting to be with my friends but also knowing I wanted to be at camp was a really difficult transition. Over the beginning weeks I really wasn’t myself, but overtime, like every summer this place really just brings you back to being your true self. It’s hard to express my feelings toward this place in words-it’s really just the experiences that make me realize how lucky I am to be a part of the Avoda community. Like every summer I’ll remember so much from this place and I want to thank everyone for making it such a successful two months. There’s nowhere else I’d rather spend my summers. Now time for some shout outs. Bunk 7: I couldn’t have been more excited to be your counselor this summer. I had heard great things about

118 6

The 2010 Bunk 14: Every year I just can’t believe how far we’ve come. It’s been such a journey, with all of our stories over the years I always love how every summer we can just come back and continue making these memories.Thank you for being my boys and always being there for me-I’m so lucky to have you fellas by my side and knowing that I can go to anyone of you at any time. Jake Alexander: I’ve come to be so close with you over the years and I couldn’t have asked for better co’s this summer. You were always around and we were able to be a part of such a great bunk. You’re going to turn into an awesome counselor and leader of this camp someday… Keep being yourself. Best of luck at South (Tigers suck) and your senior year. Swoto: I’m so glad you came back this summer-it was such a great time spending time with you in and out of the bunk. You’re such a character. Best of luck at Maryland this fall. DAD! Joey Sherman: I’ve really come to be close to you over the past two summers and it’s meant a lot how

much you’ve been there for me. I’m so glad we’re on a team again this week and I know I’ll see you in the lake after this week is done. Cleary eyes, full hearts, CAN’T LOSE! Senior Staff (The 08): You guys bleed blue and white. This summer wouldn’t have been the same without all of you here and you really lead this camp well this year. White Mob: I’ve never seen a team try harder than all of you did on that day-you all put everything into this team and at the end of the day that’s all you can ask for. White Prophets: We’ve been scouting and working this whole month. I couldn’t be more confident that we will come out on top and I’m so glad to be working with these staff members and be a part of this team. Let’s go get it. Dot-Dots: A-wut… Ze Ju and Ze Guluv… Matt’s birthday… Brett… JC’s coordinators… TiLAY… Speeding… RIP Tent… Early morning runs....Zach’s Mess… The Naked MAN… To all Avodians-you all made this summer so special and getting closer with each one of you is what will always keep me wanting to come back. To think that I’d be sitting here with

two weeks left in the 2013 summer is absolutely surreal, as I have truly never experienced a summer where time has flown by at such a tremendous rate. Then again, it’s the same story every single summer, the days drag on very slowly, while the weeks pass by right in front of your eyes; and somehow we all find a way to enjoy ourselves even in such a short span of time. In my nine years here, this camp has taught me some extremely valuable life lessons, and it was an honor to be a part of staff this year and give back to a place that has always had my back. However, this past off-season was also the first time in my life where there was a true possibility I would not return to Avoda, as I had other obligations happening in my hometown. But even with these additional commitments I was able to return to the place that I love and have the most ridiculous summer of my life. I don’t care what anyone tells you, whether it’s your friends, your parents, or your coaches, working at a summer camp is the best job you will ever have in your life. Being paid to teach kids how to have a good time and hang out with your best friends for 2 months is something that you will never get in the real world, and it’d be a shame to not come back and have that experience. I know personally coming back this summer was the best decision I have ever made in my life, so I’m asking all the campers and CIT’s to make an effort to return to this place as long as you can, you will definitely not regret it. Obviously I could write pages on end about how instrumental camp has been to my life, but if you’re an Avodian you understand the love and passion we all carry for this place, so now it’s time for some shout-outs. Bunk 7: No matter, how annoying you guys may have gotten at times, when it came down to it you were awesome.

Your age group is one of the special ones, and it was amazing having the opportunity to have you kids as my first bunk. I know your age group is capable of great things at this place. I hope you all have good school years, and that you stay in touch. Watman: ZE WOOT, We have always been pretty good friends throughout our years as campers but I feel like this year we really got close and I couldn’t be happier. You were the best co I could have asked for, as not only did you show me a great time on staff, but also showed me the ropes of being an amazing counselor. And for that I can’t thank you enough. Good luck at Delaware and during CW, and I hope that we can stay in touch during the off season. Swoto: I had literally no idea what to expect when I heard you were my co, but looking back at this summer, I can safely say you’re my boy. It was great getting to know you, and you are far and away the most outrageous person on staff, and it was always a good time hanging out with you. I hope that you can make it back next year but if not have a sick time at Maryland, and definitely stay in touch SON. Jr. Hoops: I asked you guys to go hard every single day in practice, and that is exactly what you did. I have never been more proud to be part of a team than I was to coach you guys. You worked harder than any team I’ve ever seen at this place and it was great to see everything pay off. Shay and Abe, you guys did an incredible job leading this team and it’s going to be awesome to watch how you both dominate on senior hoops. Lastly, Plotty thank you for giving me the opportunity to coach with you, it was great to see Crest’s faces as we dominated them every single tournament, good luck at URI next year.

2k11: This summer isn’t even close to as fun if I don’t get to share the experience with my best friends. I’m happy so many of us got the chance to make it back as JC’s and I hope that we can keep coming back to make an impact on this camp in the future. Ever since fourteen it feels like we have gotten closer and closer each year, and I can now safely say each and every one of you are like brothers to me at this point, and that if you need anything I always have your backs. I love you guys, and until next year I hope that we can live up camp to it’s fullest these next few weeks. Ben: You have no idea how happy I am that you came back second month. Being the only Alexander in camp for a period of time was weird, having to answer questions about your whereabouts and also not seeing you everyday. I know you made the right decision coming back this year, and it’s crazy to think that you’re going to be a 14er next year. I love you and good luck in color war. Lastly, all I can say is I loved this summer more than any summer in the past, and hopefully I have the opportunity to return for many more. I love this place and I will do my best to make sure I can return for the summer of 2014. Until next time, goodnight Camp Avoda.

times in the offseason, probably doing taxes at my house with my dad. I really hope you come back next year because this camp needs you, not just for the waterfront, but also for your personality.

This is my 8th summer here at

Avoda, and for the first time I can truly say, and mean it 100%, that I love it very much. Going into this summer I didn’t really have any strong feelings about coming back. I wasn’t particularly excited, but I wasn’t nervous or hesitant at all. It was a neutral feeling, basically I had nothing better to do, and that was why I chose to come back. But after all the good times I’ve had this summer, I can say with total confidence that I want to come back next year. Being on staff has been a great experience for me. I’ve grown as a person and I now know what it means to be a true Avodian. I’m already counting down the days until next summer. And next summer I won’t be coming back because I have nothing better to do, but because there is nothing better to do than be here, at Avoda. Miklos- It was a fun and interesting summer being co’s with you. You’re a creature, and one of the most unique characters at this place. I expect to see you a few

122 6

Fogel- We were only co’s for a month, and it was hard to tell you were even there because you slept in bunk 9, but I’d say we’re closer than we were before. I never really talked to you much until this summer and I just assumed you were cocky, but I can now say that you’re a genuinely nice and great guy. Hope the mono gets better and good luck at UVA. 2k11- There was always a divide between us, even last year as CIT’s. This year we finally came together as one, and I’m excited to see hopefully all of you back next year on staff. Pretty soon we’ll be running this place, and I know we’ll be strong in numbers, which is all that matters.

Yet, in some sense, I came to appreciate the other aspects of Avoda besides sports. Although this is a sports camp, it’s the people that define the place. Even though I couldn’t enjoy Avoda for the competitiveness and sports that I love so much, I was still with some of my favorite people in the world. Like most counselors, I don’t know how many summers I will return to camp, but I know that I will always keep in touch with my brothers at Avoda. I love this place too much to leave just yet.

Tisch: I couldn’t have asked for a better co this year and we were easily the best duo in camp. We took a tough hit not having a bunk second month but it was still pretty sweet to have the lounge. We need to keep in touch this offseason because you’re a pretty chill guy and you need to visit Virginia. Try not to get concussed again, and you better come back next year ya nerd. Miklos and Zaff: Although I didn’t sleep in Bunk 8, it was still cool to be cos with you guys for second month. I hope to see you both next year and have an awesome offseason.

2k10 14:We have a core group of guys, and now we need to keep it that way.We learn more and more every year and I hope that we all come back next summer because I cannot imagine camp without all of you guys. I love all you guys and we’re definitely getting closer and closer as we rise up on staff. I really hope the next 10 months fly just as fast as this summer has.

Brett: You’ve finally reached the offseason before the big Bunk 14 year. It may go by really slowly but get ready for the best summer of your life. I can’t wait to see you leading camp. I know you have goals, so aim high and you never know what can happen. I also really hope your on my team for Color War because if you’re not the week will definitely not be as fun. Camp wouldn’t be the same without you here.

Bunk 9: It was awesome to have such a great group of kids this summer and it was a privilege to be your counselor. Make sure to come back as long as you can and definitely longer than just one month because in the end it’ll be worth it.

Jr. Hoops: This team exceeded all expectations that I had at the beginning of the year. We dominated on all aspects of the court and took home every trophy we needed. Shay and Abe you both were two of the best captains I’ve ever seen and you brought us what

really matters: that Avoda tourney trophy. This team was nasty and I wish those of you going up to Sr. Hoops next year the best of luck. It’s going to be near impossible to replace all of you. Jake and Plotty: We did what we needed to do, and it was awesome to dominate Jr. Hoops for another year. Jake, hopefully we can take on hoops next year because you’re an awesome coach and deserve to lead a team of your own. White Prophets: This week is going to be amazing. Sitting here after negotiations I know this team is going to be great. Jake, Joey, JoCo, Watty, Shale, Benji, Roth I could not be more psyched about this staff. There’s so much work left to do so let’s take this color war.

JC Bunk 9 • 2011 Bunk 14 • Athletics Staff Fogel: You were an awesome first Co to have. Great times in bunk 9 first month.Although there was no bunk 9 second month, I still had a good time in the bunk 9 lounge. Good luck next year at UVA. I will be visiting you shortly.

I can’t believe that I am writing

this with only two weeks left in the 2013 summer. I sit here filled with amazing times and memories going back to my first year in 2007 as a camper in bunk 5A. Being a camper at this place was indescribable. The awesome times that I had we’re endless. However, I knew this summer would be different. This year I was a counselor for the first time. Not knowing exactly what to expect at first, I now realize that being on staff is just as fun as being a camper. It was really cool to give back to a place that has played such a major role in my life. It felt special helping kids enjoy their summer they way that my counselors helped me enjoy mine. This is truly a job like no other. I don’t know another place in the world where you get paid to show kids how to have a good time and enjoy their summers. And now for some shout-outs: Harrison: Thank you for the generous hospitality during the summer. I knew that I could always turn to you on any day off

124 6

and you would gladly tell me that I could stay at your house. Hey Mikko: Thank you for also taking me in during my days off. You were very welcoming and I had a great time with the shale family. Joey: Thank you for being my football agent this summer. Hopefully we will get some offers soon. I will keep you posted. Leon: You are always there when I need you and I really appreciated you taking me places for football. Thank you for being an all around great guy. Bunk 9: You guys were an awesome group of kids. I had fun with all of you everyday of first month. I hope to see all of you next summer. Bunk 10: Thank you for welcoming me as your new counselor second month. You guy were great and I felt very welcomed into the other side of the cabin.

Tibet: Get ready for our squad. Keep all four eyes on the field. Nerd. 2k11: You guys are the best, my brothers. Summer simply would not have been the same without you guys. It was awesome to see us all on staff together and how close we have gotten. Hope to stay in touch with everyone more this off-season than I have in the past. Love you guys.

I

can’t believe I’m sitting here writing what is my last counselor profile at Camp Avoda. Ever since I was 10 years old this place has shaped me into the person I am today. There is no other place on earth that can give the opportunities that Avoda gives. This place is not like other places, the tradition and brotherhood that exists here is unparalleled and I see it living on for years to come. Without the people here this place is nothing, I wouldn’t know where I’d be without everyone I’ve met along the way. Bunk 10- You guys were a crew and a half, we had some tough times but at the end of the day you were a good bunk

Blue Goblins- It’s been a rollercoaster so far but I’m ready for what’s sure to be an unreal week, lets get the W. The 08 14: It’s hard to put into words how much the bond that we all share means to me, we’ve grown up together these last 10 summers and now it looks like this may be the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s been an unreal ride and I know that all of us will be lifelong friends and continue to share ridiculous memories together. Whether I’m back or not next year I know nothing will change and we’ll always be there for each other.

Entner- It’s been great being co’s this summer, we’ll definitely be chilling in the off season, make a trip down to URI my friend JR Hoops: Pure domination over the last two years, could not ask for a better team or group of players and coaches to work with, you always stepped it up when we needed to and proved it with 7 tournaments in a row. Blue Gorillas: Unbelievable day, Jason, Brendan, Dan, Strachman, Shale- we knew what we wanted, got what we wanted and won.

As my 7th year on the shores of

Tispaquin winds down, the reality of how blissful but yet bittersweet camp is is setting in on me. What seemed to be an eternity ahead of ubiquitos opportunities to see my best frieds, interact with my campers, and partake in the Avoda comminuty, has nimbled down to merely a few regular days, and the war. I started my career at Avoda as a camper in bunk 3, with counselors Benny Bershad and Matt Channen. From the very beginning, their influence on me along with other staff members primarily determined my experience at camp. Coming into this summer, officialy a staff member of a bunk still undetermined, I couldn’t wait to truly be a figure that could drastically impact my campers’ experiences. While the 2013 summer flew by with no warning, it was nonetheless another successful and amazing summer here at Avoda. Although it may inevitably be my last summer, I don’t regret

126 6

a second of the time I’ve spent here. The friendships, lessons, and skills I will take away will last a lifetime and longer. Avoda runs in my blood. 2K1114 Guys, I don’t even know where to begin. From the summer of 2002 up until

right now; wow what a ride it has been. It was during this summer’s 4th of July bon fire that my mind drifted away in personal thought. What has this one small place in this whole world given to me? What is it that one place can keep me coming back for 11 summers when there’s a whole world out there that I could be diving into? What I came up with is that this place has become a part of me ever since that first summer where that unfiltered crazy little kid nicknamed AK came to life. I came here wanting friends, now I have brothers, I wanted sports, now I have trophies as a player here and a coach, I wanted memories, and now I have enough of them to last my lifetime. Avoda has given me my name and my identity; it has given me everything. I thought forward to the summers I will live away from here and my smile began to fade only to reappear when I realized that Avodas most amazing attribute is that once it becomes a part of you it will never leave. A kosher tattoo if you will. Once this place claims you a brother it becomes that home that you can always come back to. My mind comes back to life as I looked forward to the smoke in the air from the fire realizing, no matter where I am during the 4th of July in my future, that bonfire smell followed by exuberant colorful fire works will always bring me right back. The reason why these profiles, especially this one, are so hard to write is because words never do the proper job in describing the Camp Avoda experience. Either you live it or you don’t. I have been blessed with having lived 11 summers at Avoda and have seen it and lived it from both

sides of the fence. I often get asked the question by campers, “what is better, being on Avoda staff or being an Avoda camper.” I’ve answered this question in previous summers leaning towards one way or the other. Now I realize that it’s not about what side of the fence you are on but rather where we are. We are all at Avoda and that is really the only thing that matters. Where my life takes me I have no clue. This road I’m living, it’s all a mystery as to where it will lead. At the end of the day, wherever I may be I will always have Avoda to come back to. You are my oasis, my get away, my dream. I Love you Avoda. You are my home. Bunk 12 Left: You guys were fantastic. My goal coming into this summer was to be that rambunctious crazy counselor dude you guys gained laughs from but also gained knowledge and insight from. I really hope I taught you all how special every second at this place is and how best to enjoy it. The camp is yours next summer boys. Keep in mind please once you guys hit 14 everyone is a brother. Live it that way. A unit. I’m here for every one of you. Hollar if you need me. AK OUT. DAN and B Hef Love you boys to death. Man this summer was ill together. Da Trio fo reaoool. Going to miss living and listening to EDM all finna morning with you guys… EDM for life! Great summer boys. Couldn’t have asked for anything more. Team Avoda: 4 enough said..You guys made history. True professionals at this camp. It was my pleasure coaching you all and I

hope you learned a lot from me and keep coming back and collecting that hardware. This team was my heart and sole. Love you all and will always be your coach no matter what helping you guys succeed. 0814 This was our summer and it couldn’t have been better. I love every one of you. This last summer together as one was the best feeling. No matter where we end up, 08 forever boys. Love you brothas. Trill. Bubba You have always been a mentor to me and I will always learn more from you and look up to you. Thanks for giving me the summer of a lifetime. One day I expect that picture to be handed down to me. When Bubba has a smile on his face Avoda is at its highest element. Staff: Trill ill Piff Dope Doe Finna fo dinna weez all be winnaz. I

am really thankful that I was able to return to Camp Avoda this summer. After last summer I felt I had no chance of coming back but after constant heckling from my brothers I knew I had to be back. This summer was a very interesting experience being here for only 6 weeks but I’m just happy I was able to do so. This may be my last summer but I wouldn’t trade this place for the world. I love you Avoda, no matter what. Bunk 12 Left – I am so fortunate to have had all of you this summer. You guys are awesome to kick it with and listen to all your antics. Your 14 is primed to be one of the best in a while. With those high expectations comes along a lot of responsibility but I am confident you will all do it up right. Dan & AK – What are the odds we could’ve been co’s this summer? Hella gooood times Djing, sleeping, conversing, and Tindering. Can’t wait to reunite in the off-season.

128 6

08 – Nothing else I can say, onelove boys 2k10 – I hope you guys keep coming back, this place needs you and you all have plenty of Avoda left in you! 2k11 – You guys are the future of this camp. One of the reasons I came back this summer was to kick it with you boys on staff and it didn’t dissapoint. Admin – you guys are the truest avodians, please keep coming back Gorillas – Nothing much to say, we came we saw we conquered. Hoo Hoo Hoooo! Goblins – Let’s Gooooo!

It’s hard to believe that another

summer is already coming to a close. The older you get at Avoda, the more you wonder about your legacy at this place. So many memories are made here on a daily basis, that it becomes hard to remember each and every one. Make the most of your opportunity at Avoda, and your time here will be as awesome as you could ever imagine. Goodbye Camp Avoda.

we had a ton of fun through all of it. All of you are going to be a part of an unreal 14, and I really wish I could be around to witness the great things that you’re about to accomplish. Brendan and AK – I STILL can’t believe that us three were co’s. We had the illest bunk in camp all year, Being in a bunk with two of my best friends in the world made everything seem really easy.

I will love you forever. 0814 – HA. My boys, I can’t believe we made it this far. All of you guys bring something great to the table and I couldn’t have dreamed of a better band of brothers. The best part about this summer ending is that this is only the beginning for us. There is so much out there in the world for us to conquer, just like we did at camp. You guys are the only reason I want to come back to this place every summer, and Avoda will never be the same without us. I’ll be seeing you guys very soon. Bunk 12 – I was so excited when I found out that I had you guys this summer. Although you were pretty ridiculous at times,

Matt and Jay – I may not be back next year, but keep on reppin’ the fam at dear old A-V-O-D-A. Brendan, Jason, and Plotty – The squad. At least we got one in before it all got blown to pieces. They can do whatever they want to me, but you guys are still my best friends. Thanks for the opportunity, sorry we all couldn’t do it together again.

Team Avoda – You guys were amazing this summer. We won the Avoda tourney for the fourth year in a row with ease. Oh yeah, and we won the Bournedale tourney too. AK and AJ, we lost everyone from last year’s team yet it still felt like the same 11 guys were out there, which shows how far good coaching can go. Great season guys, you really earned that trophy. THE BLUE GORILLAS – Probably one of the sickest teams I’ve ever been on. You guys were straight up nasty all day long. Flag after flag, we dominated. Everybody did what was best for the team, and it resulted in a huge victory. I’m very proud to have been a part of such a great team.

As

my 12th summer at dear old A-V-O-D-A is slowly coming to an end, I cannot believe that I have been here that long. Some of the campers were not even born in 2002, my first summer at this amazing place we call home. My future here is uncertain; however, camp Avoda will ALWAYS be my second home, hold a special place in my heart, and will never leave my mind. I love how this place never changes. I love how every single person at this place knows each other. I love that this brotherhood is stronger than any other one I know. I love how competitive this place is.The list will go on and on. No one outside of Camp Avoda will ever understand anything in that list above, and that only shows how special and unique this place is. I love Camp Avoda, and I am so glad that I am fortunate and lucky enough to spend 12 summers at this paradise. 2008 Bunk 14- I can’t believe we had 12 of us back this summer. I can’t believe its already time

to write another profile. This summer has been ithout a doubt the best and quickest summer to date. I’m sad to see it go but what a summer it was. I couldn’t have asked for a better 11th summer at this special place. I’m glad I got to come to camp way back in 2003 and allowed it to shape me into the man I am today. This place is awesome don’t ever let the tradition die. Joey- We started together in bunk 1 way back when and we finally get to be co’s again. It was awesome having you in the bunk this summer and I’m glad we survived. But truthfully a better co than one could have hoped for. 2K8- It’s about time we finally got to the mountain top. From back in bunk 1 til now we have been holding it down. The heart and soul of this place. Its been a pleasure to have befriended all of you and can honestly say my friends for life whether we come back for another or not its been one wild ridde and I wouldn’t change it at all.

2K11- Finally you guys made it and I’m glad I got to see you guys turn from awesome campers into awesome counselors you are the future of this place and you have a bigger role than you could ever realize Leon- Once again I’d just like to say thanks for everything you do for me and this place. Bunk 12- What a crew, what more can I say. Never did you guys give us dull moments but as the summer progressed you guys became a much tighter and closer not only bunk but age group. This is a group composed of many leaders and I expect big things from you guys next year hopefully I can be there to see it. Calgary Stampede- Best league team ever. We will bring home the championship.

YEARS! I have vivid memories of my first summer back in 2003. I shared a cabin with Ryan Hopkinson in the current bunk one. So many memories and friendships have been developed over the years. I have truly enjoyed every bit of it. This summer, like all the rest, has truly been a busy one. It all started back in February with Admin getting together, February seems like years ago. Avoda has a way of slowing down time as if your stuck in a time warp. The summer always seems to fly by when were here. As this summer comes to an end, I look forward to what the summer of 2014 may bring. Before I get there, I want to thank a few people for the summer of 2013. Bunk 14 - You guys were AWESOME! I was glad to have you guys as campers. I enjoyed all the great times together. We certainly had our ups and downs. Its amazing to see the growth over the course of two months. You guys certainly bonded together and became an official 14. I look forward to

having you around as CIT’s next summer.

Gary, welcome aboard. You have become a great asset for the team.

Deuce, JD, and Jason - You guys were a great Co’s to have in the bunk. Thank you for all your help. Deuce, I hope I didn’t push you too hard. You have to realize the potential one holds within. Good luck JD and Jason this week.

To all the campers at AVODA, thank you for being you. No matter how many changes our made to this place, the campers of AVODA make this place very special. I realize I didn’t thank everyone individual or mention everyone’s

Joey - Great job as always this summer. You are among some of the few that truly get it.Thanks for all your help with the Avodian this summer.

name,Thank You for another great summer. See ya next year!

JC’s - You guys were very impressive this summer. I look forward to many more summers with you guys. Staff - Even though this was the youngest I’ve scene in my tenure, it was all in all, another great summer. This was a different type of summer for some reason or another. You guys did great! Keep coming back. PGD - Thank you for all you do. The place wouldn’t run without you. Admin - We did it! Another one for the books. I’ll pat myself on the back. Take one for yourself.

Another summer has come and

past. This summer was the most time I had spent at camp. Starting May 27 the pre-pre crew rolled down to camp and set up shop in the back of 14. From then on the whole summer was one helluva trip. Heading into the summer most of the ’08 guys were thinking this could be the last one and then we would head on to the real world. After this summer I can never imagine leaving. Avoda is hands down the greatest place on earth and I love it with all my heart. I know that all good things must come to an end but I am not ready to end my Avoda career just yet. I can not imagine a summer without this place being surrounded by all of my best friends there could not be anything better than that. I LOVE AVODA. AVODA SENIOR HOOPS:We did it again boys. Three years in a row is the best I’ve ever seen senior hoops perform. This year I thought was going to be a walk in the park for the Avoda tournament, but I was happy that Crest gave us a battle in the last game, it made us earn that win. We dug deep and each one of you found it within yourself to come up clutch. Drew and Benji you guys were great captains and you get to go out on top for your last time representing Avoda. Good work boys.

Bunk 14: Love you kids hands down best bunk I’ve ever had. My first year as a counselor I had Wes, Ryan, Notkin, and a bunch of you other guys and you were to be honest a handful but you have come a long way and matured to become a great 14. Then I had the other side of the bunk next year in bunk 10 with Louis, Bryce, Ben, Will, Parven and we had great times. To see you all come together under one roof was special. Many staff members doubted that you would be a strong 14 but you proved them wrong. Winning the 14-12 deadzone and stepping up as leaders of camp proved what a great group you are. I was honored to be your counselor and will always remember this summer. White Prophets: We sit in my kitchen working out pick scenarios. It reminds me of last year although the faces have changed. I love the team that we assembled and love working with all of you. Sam, Jared and Mike your futures in Color War are bright and the knowledge and experience you will gain from this year will make you three dangerous staff members for years to come. We’ve made our lists we’ve checked them twice lets go make the right picks tonight. And at the end of this week I know where we will be.

’08: You guys still my boys till we die, love all of you. Again we find us separated a little differently in the big dance but at the end of it I know our bonds will never break and we will come together again as a whole. We have made it from the little bunk 1’ers to senior staff. I hope most of you guys come back next year, I know a lot of you are on the fence but I think we have one more year in us boys. ’09: yikes ’10: You guys are great I feel comfortable with your group coming up to take the reigns of camp and guide it in the right direction. ’11: Although some of you Jc’s missed some good times in precamp you made up for it during the summer. I loved chillin with you guys first month especially, the bertuccis crew was phat and we had an ill time getting twisty. There’s a lot of personality in this group so don’t be afraid to let that shine through.

Another summer has come and

gone and its sad to say the least. I don’t have a lot of time to write this profile because of Color War so I will make it short and sweet. Avoda will always be an important chapter in my life; from the years as a camper to the wild times on staff. I don’t know what i would be like if I hadn’t gone here for these past 12 summers. I could go on and on but I’ll stop myself and say that I love this place, its people, and all the memories that make Avoda what it is. In the end, I’m just another Avodian passing through. 08- Love you guys, you’re the best of friends I could ask for. Let’s have some good numbers back next summer and continue to give back to this place 2k10 14 - You guys are great and I’m glad that you’ve all grown into characters over the summer. Bunk 14: I told you guys at the beginning of the summer that if it was not for you guys i would not be back. i want to thank all of you for giving me the best summer ive had avoda. from the overnight, to late night bbq’s, to the jokes, to the hershey bars, to buffalo wild wings, it has been a joy and an honor to be a 14 counselor for such a great group of guys and i could not have been more proud of you guys this summer. you all stepped up and matured into the leaders i and everyone else knew you could be. although this is the end of the road for me being your counselor and i will most likely not be back, i will always be there if you need anything whether its in Avoda or not. before i sign off.....”it’s gonna be one of those nights” White Mob-we gave it are all fellas and thats all that really counts in the end, we might not have won but i could not of been more proud of each and every one of you. you proved what it means to have heart and give it your all. Louis & Bryceyou both were incredible captains and the 2 best DW’s captains ive had. your leadership not only on the field but in the lodge was amazing. you both faced a lot of adversity during the day but you kept your heads up and powered through it. i am proud to say that you were my captains and thank you for leaving it all on the field. Supplefest- it was a fun year guys. we had a squad. Nicknames- its been a good run for all the nicknames ive been given over the years so i wanted to pay tribute to some personal favorites people came up with; Deucy J, Bruce Darings, Mel, Deuce

buffer, big black, big meech, slim charles, bubble juice. 2008 14- you guys are my best friends and although are time at camp may be done, i will remain close with all of you until the day i die, I Love all u crazy bro’s Joco- you made a promise to me last year and you kept it, i can’t thank you enough for keeping your word. i’m sorry the day didnt turn out better, but i will always cherish the good times we had during that whole process. you’ve always had my back through good and bad i just want to say thank you. JD- what can i say bruh? we weren’t fond of each other as campers and now we’re boyz, you were there for me during a time of need when i had to switch schools and i can’t thank you enough for that. we did an ill job with athletics and 14 and i cannot wait until we get to the zoo. one more thing though: CIT Directors? Jason- my friend since bunk 2 2003, it has been truly a pleasure to be a 14 counselor with you. It’s been quite the ride, I had a lot of fun and a lot of memories made. Congratulations on winning DW’s as a general and best of luck during color war, I know you will do great. I wish you the best at deleware this coming year and I will definitely be making an appearance on the college tour. Leon- I cannot thank you enough for giving me the opportunity you gave me. it has truly been the best summer and it was really fun being your cocounselor. i know i give you a hard time sometimes, but i admire your work ethic and appreciate that you try to get the best work out of me. Bubba- my buddy BUBBAAAAAAA!!!!! thank you for believing in me, i can honestly say without you i would not have had the same avoda experience, you are the heart of camp avoda. thank you for always being there even when im being ridiculous. i will always cherish my first day at camp in june 2003 when you walked across the hall to bunk 2, put your arm around me and gave me my

nickname. thank you Bubba and i hope to make many more great memories with my buddy. Blue Goons- we existed for one day, but the potential was endless. maybe we’ll exist again....... Watman- it was great to do DW’s with you and its been a pleasure hanging out. you have a lot of potential to do great things at camp and you already excel as a counselor. we’ll talk in the offseason and good luck with freshman year. Fixler- you take a lot of crap at this place but you do a damn good job, you emulate everything that avoda is and should be. Great job this summer, I hope to see you running this place when I come back to visit. There are endless possibilities of greatness that you can achieve at this place. Keep coming back. You are a true AVODIAN. 2011 14- you guys need to keep coming back, you’re great group of guys with fun personalities that are perfect for this place. great job this summer and i hope to see you guys running this place when i visit. Pre-Pre Crew- one of the illest months ever, we do it like no other. i had a great time and a made a ton of memories...it don’t make sense if it don’t make that money I Love AVODA

thought: it was fun while it lasted, I had a good run, and it was over… things constantly change in your life, opportunities arise, and you can never predict the future. So for those counselors saying this is my last year.... Don’t be so sure.

I love Avoda! I always have and always

will. One of the best things about camp is that it’s always here. Growing up, my summers were split- time with my family at our beach house in Nantasket (if you haven’t been there, go to Hull), and camp. I have such great memories- Hull is a special place that always brings a feeling of comfort & security- a second home where I completely relax & unwind, and can be myself. Why bring up the beach house- well, Camp Avoda provides me with the same feelings of comfort, security and memories. Not all of my memories are good (nor were all my behaviors), but that’s what helped mold me into the person I am today. Even after my bunk 14 year, when I was not asked back to camp as a CIT… as disappointed as I was, it never stopped me from returning to camp. (I’ve only missed one 4th of July since 1996). More importantly, most of the kids in my bunks and many of my counselors have become life long friends- truly a second family. Now that I’m older, I strongly feel an obligation to help out, make improvements and help create great memories for others. I always felt guilty that I took away so much from camp, but couldn’t give back as much, that when I was able to return as a counselor in 2008, I had to combine all the funny, weird, creative, crazy counselors into one super hybrid of them. I’ve had a blast. Like I said, the great thing about camp is that it’s always here. You may leave camp, but camp never leaves you. Last summer I was disappointed that I had to work (at a real job) and couldn’t come back- my

Ken & Jill Kenny poo it’s been a pleasure working for you this summer. I’ve had over 30 different jobs in my life time and your definitely the coolest boss I’ve ever had. Thank you for all your hard work & laughs. Jilly Bean I don’t know what I liked more this summer... Cooking with Jill or going to shooters with Jill. Your an awesome camp mom (and real mom) thanks for hanging out & the laughs Bubba Thunder buddy. This was one of our best summers. It was the Most active and busy season we’ve had yet and I loved it. One thing that I alway love is when a whole bunch of campers and counselors are talking about their 14 year and who their counselors were and ect... When it comes around to me and they ask “who we’re you 14 counselors?” It’s a really cool feeling to be able to look over at you and say bubba was my 14 counselor. CIT overnight was the smoothest overnight we’ve had.....Good times, good laughs, and more good times. Keepin traditions alive that’s what we do. I never thought I’d be sitting here

in the position with the feeling that I’ve pretty much accomplished everything I’ve ever wanted to do at camp. I’ve had the opportunity to see both sides of color war as a head judge and general. All in all I have no regrets about anything; the 14 years I’ve spent here have been amazing. There is literally nothing better than spending your summers at Avoda. I preach to all that as long as you can come back, do it.You can never say never, but it looks like my run at Avoda may be coming to an end. I’m glad I’ve had a chance to interact with so many different people in my years here. Hopefully I will have a lasting effect on the place that I love so much.

Another

summer has come and gone and I stop and wonder about how this summer will rank among all the others. How will this years events will compare to the past and what will people remember about Avoda 2K13. In 10 years will we talk about professional wrestling in the rec-hall the way we talk about the Avoda Seals first mission? Did the sweep of the Avoda tourney this past summer be looked upon like the 93 Invitational in which we took the title in the 3rd game vs. the Crest. Oh, and the final game was played under the lights. As I sit and write this profile I am still in awe of what I just experienced. Jr/Sr Zooball played under the (real) lights after a fantastic day 1 of color war. Will stories of this version of the Big Dance be shared at alumni weekends for years to come like 97’ or 04’ have been. I will sit at home or work in the upcoming 10 months what images from the past 2 will come flooding my mind as I try to get through the monotony of every day life. The first thing that comes back to be about the first month has to be the heat. Two, 4+ day long heat waves made running normal activities difficult for some campers, while others learned new games, such as Hydration Ball in Bubbas Games. Although the heat slowed us down in the first month, it was really the snow this past winter that caused some early angst. Staff members slowly tricked in during pre camp as camp got set up as usual. Two wins by the Jr. Hoops team (CYJ and Bourndale Tournaments) put them at 6 championships in a row with the Avoda Tourney on the horizon.

The 4th of July brought a carnival to the field and Avoda Gladiators entertained us in the afternoon. Bunk 14’s rendition of the Bon Fire lit up the beach as campers, CIT’s and staff put their emotions out in front as we all tried to explain this special place to others. Fire works and Bomb pops brought an end to another fantastic Independence Day. Thursdays came with the excitement of getting out of camp and back into the real world. Choice trips to Kimball Farms, Pawtucket Red Sox baseball games, and Mt. Manadnock (little known fact, it is the 3rd most climbed mountain in the world) presented campers with options while we all visited Water Wiz and Fenway Park. An all-camp field trip to 6 Flags was enhanced with coach busses and all you can eat buffet lunch. With normal days becoming stagnate, campers and staff were participants in a fantastic Battle of the Super Teams with bunk 14 on their overnight, as Blue, White, Gold and Red fought for a chance to swim in the lake. This year’s version was won by Gold, with every team competing until the end. DW brought much anticipation but was lacking on the entertainment value. I have had the displeasure of being a camper and staff member in DW’s like this in the past, and they have taught me many things about how to win big events even as the loss hurts. Professional Wrestling made a return to camp with this year’s event moved indoors to the rec hall. The atmosphere was like being in the old Boston garden as campers and staff felt as if they were in the ring. The raucous atmosphere was one of a hotly tested Bruins-Canadians playoff game. Chants of Aaron Hernandez and We

Brush with Crest rang throughout the 20 years old building. A great time was had by all, as these memories will be shared for many years to come. The second month came with many more exciting moments, such as Grandparents Day, the return of Field of Dreams and the best trip at Avoda, The CIT Adventure. With color war going on at the current time the other highlight of the second month was the continued dominance of the Avoda Tournament. The Junior Hoops team continued their winning ways and secured their place in the (new for 2014) Jr. Hoops Hall of Fame. The 7th tournament wins in a row capped off an incredible run for this group. Sr. hoops made it 3 in a row and needed both games of the finals to do so. And Team Avoda is back to its old self, racking up victory year after year. Avoda spirit was loud and true as cheers for the blue and white could be herd thorough out the grounds. These are the events that I will jam into my Avoda memories are too many to put in a profile (as Leon has limited my space for memories in this summers Avodian). The characters in my profile might be limited, but the love I have for the people who have made this summer and the 20 prior so special can not be measured. Again, since my space is limited I will stick to this summer. Staff- Great work these past 2 months. Your energy and enthusiasm is shown in all that you do. You are the future and It’s your responsibility to keep returning. You have the best job in the world and I would trade places with any of you in a second. 08- It’s been great seeing you guys develop and become the leaders of this place. I love you guys and you will

Camp Advisor 1989 Bunk 14

always be a special group in my eyes. I would drive to NH and farther for any of you. I last request from an old counselor, do what you can to make it back for one more run. You wont regret it. CIT’s – It was awesome to get to know you guys as a group and individuals. You are the future and can bring many great qualities to camp as counselors. Keep coming back and keep you number high. Camp needs you. Campers- You are what makes this place so great. Coming to camp, spending time with friends, maximizing your days to the fullest, and experiencing new things are what make this place great. I hope to see you all back next year and hopefully we have many new campers we can share this special place with. New campers who will learn as we have and become true Avodians themselves will help us pack the bunks and make us great. Administration- Thanks for all the support. We all help make camp the best place it can be, and we do it together. It’s been a blast working with all of you and you will always have my gratitude. I will thank you all individually, but I will say that it was our unity that made us strong and helped to make the tough tasks easier. I look forward to running it back with you guys in 2014.

Another

dreamy summer on Lake Tispaquin is almost over. With only 10 days left, the end is almost here. Feelings of sadness abound. For soon we’ll all be back in the real world, away from this perfect world where all we know is laughter and happiness. This summer was year 15 for me. I continued my role as Camp Advisor, and also took on the role as Waterfront Director. I’d like to thank my Assistant Waterfront Directors, Jason Hefter and Dan Friedman, Head of Swim Instruction, Josh Plotkin, and Smallcraft Director, Miklos Greenberg for keeping everything running smoothly. As always, the waterfront is the best place to be at Avoda. I’d like to thank the admin for a great summer. Paul and Ken, again you guys both did a fantastic job leading the camp. Gary, you were a great addition to the team. Bubba, as always I love working with you. It just wouldn’t be the same without you here. Leon you do it all. Everyone knows you’re the hardest working man at camp. Tricky and Joe, nice job bridging the counselor/admin gap, and running the CIT program. Some of my highlights of the summer: Early morning skis…Jr Hoops @ Tel Noar…Winning the Pembroke Swim Meet…Hiking Mt. Monadnock…Phish/Furthur/Black Crowes and Tedeschi-Trucks w/counselors, admin, and alumni…AK running WOD’s. Thanks to all for a memorable summer. A good time was had by all!

To those that I have forgotten, I apologies. You will all be in my thoughts these next few days, weeks and months, I am grateful that I have all of these special memories to help get me through the long winter months. And until we meet again, Good night Camp Avoda, you will be with me in my dreams.
