DEDICATION: paul g. davis

In December 1965, a man named Paul Davis applied for a summer job; a program director position at a summer camp called Avoda. Under the guidance of Judge Barnett and the previous director Stanley Miller, he succeeded in his position, holding it for what became 50 years. Throughout this time he grew to love the effect that camp had on each man that attended, the traditions they carried over the years, and the memories they made. He saw countless changed lives and amazing summers, campers and staff coming and going. In addition to running the camp he had a virtuosic storytelling talent, especially for his ghost stories told by the side of the bonfire on the 4th of July. He loved to sing and lead prayers during the meals, and always loved being the judge for the color war spelling bee.

He stepped down from his position as executive director in 2015, passing the position down to Ken Shifman and continuing his work on the board of directors. He passed away in January this year, a decade later.

Now we find ourselves at that same camp that he was drawn to almost 60 years ago, with only a select few campers who had attended before Mr. Davis retired. So many of us have only met him a few times or not at all. However, you need not look far for the impact PGD has had on this camp. He dedicated so much time into making camp the best it could be, going above and beyond his job as director. His time here has brought unity to people of all ages, who can gather and remember and tell stories of how kind and wonderful he truly was. His impact reaches far beyond his duty as director and his time spent at this camp.

In this Avodian, we would like to celebrate the life and legacy of Mr. Davis, as what we do in this book could only match a fraction of his ability to remember all sorts of details about everyone and their family, as well as be a “one man archive” with all the knowledge of camp’s history. We encourage you to take the time to appreciate what he has done at this camp; go into the archives or flip through a few old issues of the Avodian, read how the campers and staff lauded him for his dedication and admiration of this place we call home. For now, we would like to do our part to celebrate our 50year legend.

We dedicate the 2024 Avodian to Paul G. Davis.

We are proud to present the 2024 Avodian in memory of Paul G. Davis

BUNK 14 OVERNIGHT

The annual Bunk 14 Overnight started early on a crisp Sunday morning with a delectable Avoda breakfast of chocolate chip pancakes to fuel up for the big trip ahead. After a hearty breakfast, the campers loaded up the two vans to begin the long journey ahead. The first stop of the trip was to Needham, Massachusetts to pick up the van drivers— Danny Blumenstein and Ethan Shifman— and a quick bathroom stop. After the quick stop in Needham, the campers drove to Hampton Beach, NH. The campers enjoyed a lovely lunch at the beach, and fun activities run by the counselors. To finish off the journey there, the campers drove another three

hours to their final destination at Camp Moxie in Maine. After settling in, the counselors cooked up a barbeque feast for everyone while the campers built a bonfire. After a scrumptious dinner, the campers caught some ZZZzzz’s and hit the hay for a big day ahead of them.

The next morning, the counselors woke the campers up bright and early for a day full of adventure. The campers ate a light breakfast before hitting the road to start their trek: whitewater rafting down the Kennebec River. After driving 20 minutes in the wrong direction, the group finally found where they were supposed to be and met up with the tour guides at The Three Rivers. The group then went whitewater rafting down the Kennebec, facing rapids up to category 4. During the rafting, there were stellar performances by Leo Steindecker and Tyler Newton for their leadership on water. After the rafting, the campers were feeling quite tired so once they got back, they took some time to

wind down. After a quick rest, the campers loaded into the vans to have dinner at a local restaurant. The most popular dish for the night was the Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese. The campers went back to the campsite, made another bonfire, and enjoyed each other’s company.

The next morning the campers headed back on the road to start the long journey back to Camp Avoda, with a stop at Dunkin’ Donuts for a light breakfast and bathroom break. The campers stopped at the Northshore Mall in Peabody, MA for lunch and a screening of the new hit movie, Inside Out 2. After the movie, the group started the final drive into downtown Boston where they enjoyed an all-you-can-eat experience at Maggiano’s Little Italy, where Danny Blumenstein recorded a record-breaking 10 entire Fettuccine Alfredo plates eaten. The campers then drove back from Boston to home sweet home, Camp Avoda.

avoda council

The Avoda Council is a group of campers and counselors that is working to make Avoda an even better place. Avoda is an amazing community but like every community can always use to be reminded about how to treat others, be more inclusive and work well together. This new group decided together to talk to bunks about the goals, institute Shabbat Shout-Outs to recognize kindnesses done by others, and special deeds that week. The council also instituted a camp-wide suggestion box that has yielded some very nice ideas. The council is excited to take this inaugural committee to the next level next summer.

Avoda OPENING DAY

4TH OF JULY

The 4th of July ceremony is a sacred tradition at Camp Avoda. The festivities started after all the bunks lined up at the flagpole when bunk 14 started a loud, intimidating U-S-A chant. After breakfast and bunk cleanup, everyone returned to the flagpole to hear the reading of the teams for the comeback of Tough Mudder. All the campers went through challenging obstacles running around camp in hopes of taking home the win for their team and to get their grand prize of getting breakfast with Leon. Team 6, led by Zach Musheyev and Jay McNulty, ended up winning after being the first to hustle from the flagpole to the showers in bubble balls. After a yummy fish lunch, the carnival started and the dunk tank was one of the most popular attractions. CIT Gabe Kurland was the main victim of the dunk tank getting dunked over 20 times over the span of the afternoon. Along with the carnival going on, the annual hotdog eating contest was happening with contestants such as TyTy Newton, former champ and alumni Sam MacGilpin, Jake Wade, and Jake Mann. TyTy Newton ended the competition with a record breaking 59 hotdogs eaten in 5 minutes. For the evening activity, Bunk 14 revealed their bonfire— Tikvah, “Hope”— to the whole camp. At the Bonfire, people from all 14’s gave a speech about their favorite parts of camp, what camp means to them, and why this place is so special. To conclude the night, all campers stood looking over Tispaquin, watching the fireworks with a bomb pop in their hand.

FLAGRUSH

It was a beautiful first night at Camp Avoda and the campers and counselors were buzzing with excitement as they waited for the evening activity to be announced. The illustrious CITs were called to the microphone and boisterously screamed “Flagrush!” sending the entire mess hall into a frenzy. Captains were announced and kids headed back to the bunk to prepare for the legendary battle.

White charged forward early, led by the speedy Borokhov brothers. They glided across the enemy side as if they were on horseback, crushing any and all opponents in their way, including Ref Max Veksler, an unfortunate and unsuspecting bystander.

Blue countered quickly though, with Ethan Musheyev scoring a camp record of 25 flags before being called out and sent to jail on a controversial call by Ref Mark Ocher. The half ended with blue up 8 points but spirits remained high on the white team, partially due to a “Remember the Titans” like motivational speech by main offender Drewski Magilps. The White team won, but both teams played well. MVP’s for the blue team were David Petrie and Brennan Agulnek and for the white team were Drew “Gilly” MacGilpin and Jesse Fernandez.

ZOOBALL

At the conclusion of the second dinner at Camp Avoda, anticipation arose as Jason Karas stepped up to the podium and announced that the evening activity was Zooball. The campers erupted in excitement, as they were exhilarated to participate in the first ever Zooball of the 2024 summer. The white team was led by the towering Jordan Hass and agile Leo Steindecker, while the blue team was captained by THE Jonny Peters and the intimidating Nate Zalvan. As the opening whistle blared, anarchy ensued, both teams got off to a hot start with Albert Bazarevzkyi scoring a drop kick for the blue team. Followed by the electrifying captain of the white team, Jordan Hass, scoring a throw that ripped through the net. As halftime came about the white team was down by two points. The only penalty shot was for the blue team. Tyler Groysman punted the volleyball towards the top right corner, but Gregory Wurcel made THE unstoppable save for the white team. Arthur Papanov stepped up and scored a dropkick to put the white team forward minutes into the second half. The white team’s defense was on lock with Zachary Musheyev and Danny Karas in net. But the ferocious captain Jonny Peters scored an unstoppable kick, but it wasn’t enough as the white team prevailed.

DESERT WAR

Desert War. The most intense day of the entire summer. Two colors, two teams, one war. It all started Tuesday night, July 16th. Admin had forced staff to turn in their phones during the meals to a “phone jail,” however, staff was infuriated with this decision and decided to retaliate. During the breakfast and dinner lineups, staff had secretly raised the phone jail onto the flagpole. At a special evening snack time, everyone gathered in the mess hall. Admin had a “staff meeting” at the head table and Max Veksler came storming through the kitchen, phone jail in hand, announcing “IT’S DESERT WAR!!” The Mess Hall erupted and the 14ers started the chant, “1-2-3-4 this is Desert War.”

Owen Sherman read the teams on the microphone as the campers waited patiently to find out what team they were on. Everyone was announced except 4 people, the captains. Both teams, white and blue, separated on PGD’s Path, white on the main office side, and blue on the woodshop side. Danny Blumenstein announced on the mega phone, “Can I please have four 2024 Desert War Captains”. Zack Leibman, Ty Goldberg, Danny Karas, and David Satloff walked down the path and both teams roared in anticipation and excitement. Zack and Ty went to Blue as David and Danny went to white. As pathwalk after pathwalk occurred, both staffs were revealed. On the Blue side, 1st lieutenant Jason Karas declared their name was the Dark Knights. Simultaneously, Drew Busny stated that his team’s name was the White Phoenix. Generals Charlie Zuker and Max Singer then strolled down the path, dapped each other up, and ran to their respective headquarters with their teams. The 2024 Desert War was set, The Dark Knights vs. the White Phoenix. Both teams went to bed early, not knowing that the

2024 Desert War would be one that would never be forgotten.

Waking up early the next morning with a rush of adrenaline, The Dark Knights and White Phoenix lined up on opposite sides of the flagpole after a 10 second countdown. After bunk cleanup and organization, Desert War 2024 was underway. The First Period began with an opening rush from the Phoenix which was unsuccessful but tested the Knights’ Defense. Blue responded with a rush of their own, where Jordan Hass almost scored the beach flag on a throw to Charlie English, but was just a little out of reach. Time wound down in the first period and the Desert War remained scoreless. Second period began with an opening rush from the Dark Knights, which resulted in all of the blue offense in jail. The airhorn blasted, an advanceable jailbreak was called and Ty Goldberg rushed immediately to the seesaw flag. He took the flag and heaved it to Charlie English who caught it a few feet before the line, but Josh Levy made a clutch wrap up to prevent the score. Most of the Dark Knights were in jail when The Phoenix sent a rush of their own, where Zack Musheyev took the fourteen flag through the 12-14 gap. As he was getting closed in on by Logan Layish and JD Feldman, he tossed the flag to Jake Rothstein, who caught it and took one step back across the line. The Phoenix secured a 2-0 lead, opening up the scoreboard going into the 3rd period. The 3rd period was quite slow and neither rushed, leaving the score 2-0 going into lunch.

After both teams refueled at lunch and took a rest, the 4th period started with an opening rush from blue which was immediately shut down by the Phoenix defense. A jailbreak from Logan Layish and Asher Liss sent

DESERT WAR

Zack Leibman behind the bunks into the desi flag circle. Once Zack had the desi, he took it into the seesaw circle. Zack had both flags in hand as he reached the field and threw the desi unsuccessfully, but ended up running the seesaw flag across the line to tie the game at 2-2. In the 5th period, the Phoenix were back on the offensive, they were attacking nonstop, getting jailbreak after jailbreak. In a moment of confusion, Tyler Goldberg snuck down to the beach through the gate. He took the beach flag up through the gate, untouched until right next to the line where Leo Steindecker’s long wingspan aided him in grabbing Tyler’s shirt. Tyler flipped the flag to Jonny Peters on the line who caught it and stepped over to give the Dark Knights a 4-2 lead. A strong White Phoenix counterattack got Bennett Kalish behind the bunks. He took the beach flag onto the field and heaved the flag to Micah Gladstone who caught it and tied the score back up at 4. The 6th period began with another Dark Knights rush. The Phoenix defense held strong, but a string of jailbreaks for the Dark Knights got JD Feldman into the seesaw flag. He took the flag through the grill gap and, with only one defender to beat, used his agility and speed to blow past and score the flag, putting the Dark Knights

back in the lead. Right after the score from JD, Jonny Peters stole the field flag in front of Bunks 3 and 4 and collided with Micah Gladstone and David Satloff across the line resulting in a score. Jordan Hass then sneakily ran from behind the bunks to the field flag and sprinted past Josh Levy and Leo Steindecker to add another score for Blue. Following that Avner Israeli made his way into the desi flag circle, and ran the flag all the way across the line beating every defender in his path, creating a commanding lead for the Dark Knights. After a slight break, chaos ensued, and white went on all out attack, but their defense was lacking; as while they were scoring, so were the Dark Knights. The siren sounded, signaling the end of a hardfought war, as the victorious Dark Knights ran down to the lake and celebrated their victory. The MVP’s were decided for both teams shortly after. For the White Phoenix, Bennett Kalish, Zach Musheyev, and Nate Zalvan received the honorable award. For the Dark Knights, MVP’s included: Jordan Hass, Logan Layish, Jonny Peters, and JD Feldman.

“Story

of My Life” by One Direction

[VERSE 1]

Written on these walls are the people that came before me

In east massachusetts, there’s a camp that Dad went to I’m scared

He told me in the daylight you don’t see a single boy without a smile

Haven’t slept alone before, don’t know if I can do it for a night

[PRE-CHORUS]

And I’ll be gone tomorrow

All my friends back home do not know why

Eyes open laying down in bed, can’t sleep

What if it’s not for me?

[CHORUS]

And finally I’m here

See Beanies wave

Flagrush EA

Just like that, lights out I think I’ll love it here

Been dreaming every night

Drive down Gibbs road

Wait 10 Months

For two at home, we’re back

No where else can compare

[VERSE 2]

Now i’m in one-four with my brothers I cannot believe

Eight years of hard work, now I’m, sitting up on the stage

Remember what staff used to say, now we start to value all our time

Although it’s not over, this feels like it is the end

[PRE-CHORUS]

And I’ll be back, back next year

All my friends back home still don’t see why

The way that we’ve been here for all our lives

There’s no words to describe

[CHORUS]

Now our roles have flipped

And we give back

Don’t count the days

From strangers, to friends for life

Camp Avoda, don’t change

The best years of my life

Met my brothers

And just like that

Our last year, we’re done

We go our separate ways

(Hass Instrumental - 20ish Seconds)

ALMA MATER

“Shallow” by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga

[Verse 1] (Son)

Tell me something, dad

Why are you sending me away to camp

I’ve loved my summers home

Please don’t force me, I don’t want to go

I’m crying

You’re gone now

And I miss you and Mom

Longing

To leave

Walking to bunk 1, all alone

[Verse 2] (Dad)

Don’t know how to explain

The man who did it all and made this place

Taught me how to grow

And in doing so I found my home

Reminiscing

With all the good times, I found myself

Wanting

To stay

Now it’s your turn, go make

him proud

[Chorus]

Look at Tispaquin

Lake water shining

As young boys turn to men

Showing us how to, fall in love with Dear old A V O D A

Walk down the path, he paved the way

For us to find a home within this place

We came alone, but we leave as one

We all bleed for white and blue

[Verse 3] (Son)

My time is finally done

My fourteen arm in arm as if we’re one

Been here half my life

Can’t believe that I’ll be gone so soon

I’m crying

With all my brothers, across the aisle

[CHORUS]

My son’s grown up

My legacy

Continues on

Finally, back on Gibbs

The best years of my life

Avoda’s in my blood

I’ll pass it on

I’ll send my son

He’ll fall in love with this place

Avoda never change

(Hass - Music Dies Out)

[CHORUS - NO MUSIC]

Avoda’s in my blood

I’ll pass it on

I’ll send my son

He’ll fall in love with this place

Avoda never change

Knowing, we’ll never change Blue and white runs in our veins

[Chorus] (Son)

Tears streaming down my face

Remember the old days

Wishing I did not have to leave

Strangers in Bunk 1

To brothers in 14

In heaven on old gibbs road

Never leaving, I want to stay

Dad was right in sending me away

Can’t believe, my time is done

Now all I want is these benches down

WHITE FLAMES

FIGHT SONG

Flames are a team that cannot be beat

The revs go running when they feel the heat

We’re Fire!

We hear the cries grow louder

Blues a weak team gonna beg and cower

We have a message to bring to light

You won’t be swimming in that lake tonight

This ones a massacre you just can’t avoid

The flames have won revs have been destroyed Flames have won, Flames have won, Burned Blue Revs are done, Revs are done,

You Lose

*8 count*

I remember when you thought you had a chance I never seen a more unfair victory fire!

Your week was wasted

Its all but over, this win we can taste it You never had a chance in this fight Flames are swimming in that lake tonight

Don’t know how you thought you could win this game

Look at yourselves you are engulfed in flames Flames have won, Flames have won, burned blue Revs are done, Revs are done, you lose This war was over right from the start

The Revolution have fallen apart They’re tired!

They’ll hear our cheers from the porch They picked a bad team and then they got scorched

Set ablaze, Set ablaze, on the shore

There’s a fire, there’s a fire, at your door Flames have won, Flames have won, Burned blue Revs are done, Revs are done, you lose

East Side of Sorrow by Zach Bryan

8 years old, nervous face

Shipped me off to a brand new place

Dad said, “Son, just trust me now, where you’re goings worth more than money can afford”

I made friends in the summer heat Laughing crying yelling, always was one of 3 I said “Dad, I don’t wanna leave I got brothers at avoda that are apart of me”

And I lost you way too soon I can’t accept that our time is through The night I leave I turn and toss Cause you’re the best thing I have ever lost Explored your trails and felt your breeze Walked all the paths you, paved for me 8AM, lineup blows at dawn

Wondering where all the time has gone

Now we sing with hearts of sorrow 10 months, we start tomorrow

We better pack up our bags, hold our tears back, and then hit the road

Now I say goodbye

With a heavy heart and teary eyes Avoda is a dream you must follow

ALMA MATER

Those Eyes by New West

I look back tonight and I realize i’m now on my own

Leaving camp way too soon and I ask where did all the time go?

Think about what i’d give to stay here for just one more day Singing songs, mourn the past, all those great times they went by too fast

Cause our friends at home

Will never know why We sit and wait for 10 months to go by Benches will fall Our time is through Brothers divided by just white and blue Can I come back to you?

Colors fly so high blue and white we will soon reunite Arm in arm, side by side, we will cry as our summer dies

Cause our friends at home

Will never know why We sit and wait for 10 months to go by

Let me stay I don’t wanna go

Let me stay, I don’t wanna go

No place compares

To where we are

So many great times spent under these stars

As the heartache sets

And the benches fall

The only thing that I wish is for time to stall

It hurts me to leave

But more today

Cause next summer I won’t be here to spend the days

If you ever get the time

Come on home

You’ll always feel avoda’s magic and sing its songs

Now we sing with hearts of sorrow 10 months, we start tomorrow

We better pack up our bags, hold our tears back, and then hit the road

Now I say goodbye

With a Heavy heart and teary eyes

Avoda is a dream I can’t follow

Can’t stay we have to go

Can’t stay, we have to go

Benches will fall our time is through Brothers divided by just white and blue Can I come back to you?

The day has come just yesterday I was so young

Grown up too soon, years passing by I don’t know life without camp by my side

Now we depart brothers as one

Well sit by the lake and look up to the sun

And accept our times done

Our chapter ends

Time won’t go slow

Now I’ll pass the torch to my son watch him grow Legacy gone our dream slowly fades

The rest of my life I’ll remember this day I rest easy tonight

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Another summer in the books at Dear Old A-V-O-D-A! How did the summer fly by yet again? Maybe it was the fun, the people, the sun, the food, the DQ, the special events, the field trips, the laughs, the challenges, the resolutions, league, and the performers? Not sure!

This place is truly magical. We have a community that spans so many generations, years, and people. And we are truly a community. We care for each other, support one another, laugh together, have private jokes together, wake up and eat together, and come together each summer as one.

We started out this particular summer with the loss of Paul G. Davis still raw from earlier this year. I loved Paul and am grateful for his dedication and hard work to make me [and Avoda obviously] who I am today. My years as a camper and counselor certainly shaped me individually and created my infrastructure of friendships and brothers. And then as a mentor for my first eight years as Director he further helped me hone my skills and abilities even further. Our Alumni Weekend dedication to PGD was truly special. Here’s to PGD!

We have our own world here at Avoda. We have programming, office needs, marketing and tours, health, plumbing, kitchen and more. There is always something going on. How do we make it all happen? Our incredible staff. Just when we think we are at our peak of greatness, we add even more amazing people to our staff. I can’t thank you all enough for making Camp Avoda thrive under each of your own jurisdictions.

Everyone working here contributes in a meaningful way. Thank you to the campers and parents for sending your boys here! Thank you to the hard working CIT’s, the fun and spirited staff, our core leadership Admin team, our amazing and caring nurses, our flexible, talented, and salty chefs and kitchen staff, our handy maintenance staff, our friendly and efficient office staff (both seasonal and year-round), our creative arts specialists, our behind the scenes social media and yearbook staff, our part time staff, and of course Jill! You all hold a place in my heart and I so appreciate our collaboration, fun, hard work, and partnership; running camp is certainly a labor of love.

This summer was certainly fun if nothing else. Highlights include: a four-way Olympic flag rush, a close Battle of the Super Teams with Men in Black beating the Red Bulls, the 4 th of July egg toss to that fun tune, Avoda at the Red Sox game (so much energy!), Jr Hoops winning the Tevya AND Bauercrest tournaments, a Desert War for the history books with The Dark Nights turning it on in the 5th period, the Harlem Wizards, Crystal’s send-off/

pep-rally, flag football, Glazed update of the day, bucket golf, Thomas’ bar mitzvah, Senior Soccer championship at THE Avoda Tourney, Senior softball over ‘Crest, that huge turtle on the field, our baseball lunch, Robert Channing: mind reader, and of course Color War!

I will end with a brief musing about our values. We strive to instill positive, kind, honest, strong, values in our campers, CIT’s and staff. I am thankful for the campers and counselors for the Avoda Council and getting this off the ground. How can we be better people? What lessons are kids learning at camp? What values do we wish to prioritize and promote? Please consider all that we have learned and talked about and carry that on to the rest of your lives. We can all make a difference!

Here’s to another great summer at Camp Avoda. See you all next summer!

A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

“Kodachrome

They give us those nice bright colors

They give us the greens of summers

Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day, oh yeah I got a Nikon Camera I love to take a photograph So mama don’t take my Kodachrome away”

Thank you to Paul Simon for this inspiration

A photograph snaps one moment in time. Summers at Avoda are made up of many moments in time that are knitted together to create the experience of a single season. Those seasons flow together to create a part of life that I value and hold dear every day. There are moments no one else can understand. You just have to be there. The logo on the field. Shout outs. Laughing until I cry. Laundry. Ridiculous moments. Crocs. Jibitz. Chipotle. Hot buses. Hugs. The lake. Zoom lessons. Socks. Hydrangea blooming. My new shaded porch. Lost and found. Amazing Counselors. Lots of talking. Socks…sometimes clean ones. Stain removal. Hilarious campers. Shabbat. Geese. Kitchen staff. Avoda tourney. Color War. Colleagues that feel like family. Love.

Summer greens, sunny days, and people I am grateful to care about. Avoda life is good!

GARY RABINOWITZ

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

“The road is long With many a winding turn That leads us to who knows where, who knows where But I’m strong Strong enough to carry him He ain’t heavy, he’s my brother”

2024 will go down as one of the most impactful summers in our storied history. With all that transpired from October 7th through the start of camp on June 23rd, campers counselors, and admin all needed a bit of Avoda love. How can we possibly quantify the importance of a typical Avoda summer that has felt so much more meaningful? We always need the love, levity, laughter, brotherhood, and camaraderie that Avoda provides, but especially this year. We have had the pleasure of hosting both Israeli counselors and campers this summer. Inspirational is not enough of a word to describe them. From 11-year-olds speaking about their experience this past year to our Israeli staff speaking about friends that they lost, every smile and day of joy felt that much more meaningful.

Avoda, as always stepped up and embraced us all with love and provided a sanctuary from the real world. An Avoda hug is better than most other hugs. An Avoda hug makes your knees feel like jello. An Avoda hug pastes a smile across your face that radiates across miles. An Avoda hug makes you laugh with joy that it makes Seth Rogan’s laugh seem tame. An Avoda hug makes a difficult moment, day, month, or year seem tolerable and perhaps will give you some will, determination and just a bit of grace.

The crew that makes Avoda tick are the Gretzky, Lemieux, and Orr of the camping world. Ken, Ronni, and Leon drive the bus that allows Avoda to provide these soul cleansing hugs and all the other awesomeness that is camp Avoda. Our entire community owes them a debt of gratitude.

I am always grateful for any summer spent at 23 Gibbs Rd, but the summer of 2024 will always hold a special place in my heart as the one that brought joy back to a community that was in need.

Thanks Avoda!

BUNK 1, SC, 2K2014, HEAD OF ARCHERY, MOUNTAIN BIKING

It’s hard to believe that after 10 years spent on the shores of Lake Tispaquin, I am finally in the position where my counselors were my first year here. As my second year on staff comes to an end, I have such an appreciation for the work that my counselors did to give me the best time of my life and gave me a place I now call home. As I came into this summer I was unsure if this would be my last year. I have gotta say they every time I drive back down 23 Gibbs Road I fall in love with this place all over again. I would like to give a shoutout to: 2k20: We are almost there. Our time is coming, we will be the leaders on staff and I could not be more excited. Our numbers were strong this year and while I know that we will continue to shrink every year I also know we will continue to show up. I could not be happier with the group of men that I get to call my brothers and I can’t wait to run it back with you all next year. Bunk 1: Boys, that’s a wrap. It’s crazy to think my time at Camp Avoda began a few years before you were born, I guess that just shows you how special of a place this is. For most of you, it was your first summer here. It wasn’t always pretty and you boys definitely drove me crazy sometimes, but I can say without a shadow of a doubt you all belong here at Camp Avoda! As I look to the end of my journey at camp, I hope you all take advantage of the fact that yours is just beginning. Keep coming back, grow together as a 14 and fall in love with this place just like I did.

MAX LEAVITT

BUNK 1, SC, 2K2014, WATERFRONT STAFF

After 12 summers here on the shores of Tispaquin, it only feels like this summer has gone by the fastest it’s ever gone. After how good last summer was, this summer was one for the books and was the best summer I’ve been at Avoda. 2k20: It was great to see all my brothers back from last year except two–Gilly you’re rotten–You guys made this summer amazing and I hope to be back with all of you next year. Jacoby: It was great having one of my brothers as a co, and I couldn’t have asked for a better co. You brought good vibes, music, and were the loud voice that brought it all together. Hopefully we’re able to come back next summer. Steindecker: I was surprised to see you back this summer after you missed 2 summers, but I’m glad I got to have you as a co. You were always consistent, reliable, and could always be trusted to get things done. Come back as much as you can. Bunk 1: Wow, what a summer in bunk 1! Through all the craziness of you guys, we’re here at the end of the summer, with color war just around the corner. I remember my first year in bunk 1 and how much fun I had, in part because of my counselors, so I hope I was able to do the same for you guys. My advice to you guys is to come back as many years as you can and for as much time each summer because you’ll regret it if you don’t. I hope I get to see you guys next year and the growth you’ll showcase afterward. Staff 2024 on top, Thank you Avoda and I hope I’ll be able to spend another summer here.

MATTHEW STEINDECKER

BUNK 1, JC, JR SOFTBALL COACH, ASSISTANT RABBI

So amazing to be back at Avoda this year. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity to be back here with my brothers at the place I love. To all the campers reading this, come back as long as you can. This is the best place in the world. Not coming back 14 and CIT year was the worst decision I ever made and I hope none of you have to miss it like I did. 2k21: We finally made it to staff. I love you boys so much. Thanks for welcoming me back to camp after my hiatus. You boys made my summer amazing. Brothers for life. Greatest 14 on earth. Bunk 1: You guys are hilarious, crazy, and awesome. Coming into camp, I knew I wanted your age group and I am so happy with that decision. Keep coming back, all of you, you won’t regret it! Gink Gonk Leavitt and Jacoby: We ran it up in Bunk 1. Thanks for being great cos and working through the summer together. Gorno: Let’s run it up at WashU. Go Bears! Leo: I love you bro. I know we don’t always get along but I loved being back at Avoda for your 14 year and being here for you. I can’t wait for the next chapter in both of our lives and all the memories we are going to make together. Keep growing taller and working harder. Love you Avoda: Thank you for all the memories I have made here. Thank you for raising me from a little kid all the way until adulthood. Camp is like nothing else in the world and the brotherhood here is unmatched. If this was it, it was a great ride and a great time. If not, I can’t wait for Summer 2025 on the shores of Tispaquin!

I can’t believe the summers coming to an end. It feels like yesterday I arrived at precamp eager for my first year on staff. This summer was the best one yet. It’s easy to forget how amazing camp is in the off season and I’m beyond glad I came back this year. For all those who are debating coming back next year, do it. You won’t regret it. Bunk 2: Although we had a lot of ups and downs, you guys were a great group and I’m happy I got to start my staff career with you guys. It’s been fun and I know all of you will grow up to become great Avodians and keep coming back for years to come. Brett and Tzur: You guys were great first cos. We ran Bunk 2 and definitely improved as the summer went on. Danny: You’ll always be the goat. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Nursing home hockey must be too easy. E-Shif: You’re foul for staying with sponsor. Should’ve ran it for one more year. But then again, sponsor needs you. 2K21: I love you boys. I’m so happy we had so many of us back this year, definitely the best group of JCs in a while. You’re all my brothers and I can’t wait to run it back next year. Truly was the best summer yet. Benny and Veksler: Going from living with you boys at camp to going to Cuse is going to be sick. We’re going to run it up this fall and I’m hype to be going to school with you guys. Chuck: Thanks for showing me the ways of staff. I’m glad we got so much closer this year and appreciate you taking a chance on me in the big events. After how well DW went I know we’re gonna run it next week and be in the lake. Gaby: I love you my guy. Being on the same DW teeam was so fun and although we won’t be together for CW I know you’ll do great this week. I’m glad we were on the same side in bunk 6 and can’t wait to visit UMD this year. Alex: You’ve been my boy since Bunk 2. Needham heads are mad lucky to have you. Loosen the collar a bit and maybe we can hang out more. I’ll for sure be at Wake at some point though. Love you my guy. And just like that, it’s August. Year 10. 1 Decade. I love you, Camp Avoda. I will fight tooth and nail to see you next summer. All Campers: Come back as long as you can and listen to your counselors. We’re annoying but you’ll get it when you’re older. Also, leave your hearts out on the field. If I could change anything about my time at Avoda it would be trying and caring about everything sooner. It would be me trying to improve my skills and techniques. It would be me showing up to my periods on time. It would be me going out of my comfort zone. It would be me asking for help. Do those things. 2k20: Our numbers are a little down but I’m so happy to see you guys back this year. I wish we got more than 2 months a year together but that’s why we cherish them. Hype for next year we will be RUNNING staff. Bagels: Tell Eve I say hello. You are the head of GAS. I love you brotha, see ya in the lot. I have more to say but I think you know it already. Cooper: IWYWAW. We had it locked on the WF and there’s no one I would have rather done it with. Let’s run back Plymouth and also try to keep 4 windows on your car at all times. Idan: You’re like an older brother to me and I’m so grateful that we’ve been able to be so close. To many more rounds of darts with you. Tzur & Sagi: Idan hyped up the “new Israelis” on the phone but I didn’t know what he really meant. Tzur you were an awesome Co even though you spent a lot of time with Gary. Sagi, keep being yourself brotha you’re a great guy. Hass: Got so lucky to have you as a Co. We spent as much time in the bunk as we did in Ronni’s but I’m happy you were who I did it with. Good luck in school guy. Try not to be too heinhorrenabyzatrosh Bunk 2: You guys were definitely interesting to hang out with but I’m proud to say we had an awesome summer. Y’all could definitely benefit from some cleaning lessons and learning how to listen but those will come as you grow up. Keep being the fun, competitive, and cohesive group that you are. Can’t wait to see you guys grow into smart, mature, respectful men. Keep it goin. Have trust in Hashem that everything has/will happen for a reason and you’re exactly who you’re supposed to be. I cannot believe I am writing a staff profile for the Avodian this year, it feels surreal to finally be on staff. I had no idea what to expect for my first year on staff, and it surprised me in every way. I am truly grateful for every experience I had during these two months. From the 4th of July to trying to get the bunk to clean, I loved every moment. I didn’t expect toI learned so much from people and also was able to feel like a kid again which was so relieving. Camp truly brings another part of me out and I am so happy that I can embrace these two months every year. If you are reading this please come back as long as you can. 2k2114: Boys, I could not be happier with the amount of people back. I absolutely love each and every one of you with my whole heart, thank you for being the number one reason I return to camp each summer. I have never laughed or cried harder than when at camp and it’s all because of you guys. Thank you. Bunk 3: What’s up fluffers, I’m so sad that the summer is over but I am so happy that I had you guys as my campers. Thank you for teaching me so much about myself, I am forever grateful for the things I have learned from you guys. I hope you enjoyed having me as a counselor as much as I enjoyed you guys as campers. Please never stop coming back, camp needs strong bunches like you guys. Vexler: Thank you for being an amazing Co-Counselor, I couldn’t have asked for anyone else. You and me are always on the same wave and it was awesome, thank you for giving me my time when I needed it. I really hope that you could count on me as your Co because I always knew I could count on you. I’m so glad we got to become closer this year because we were counselors together love you brotha.

This is my first year on staff and after 9 summers at Avoda I think it’s safe to say it’s been the best summer yet. Time has been flying and I’m sad to see the summer close out, but all in all coming back to be on staff was the best decision I’ve ever made. Growing up at Avoda I’ve learned so much and I continue to learn more and more every year. As a member of staff I’ve seen behind the scenes of camp as a counselor and it really is a special thing. I came back on staff to give campers the same amazing experience that I grew up with and I think I really accomplished that this year. To Bunk 3: You guys are the best! I couldn’t have asked for a better bunk! Never a dull moment in the bunk and you guys are excited for every day at camp. I’m so excited to see your 14 grow up and become the true Avodians you really are. Thank you guys for being an awesome first bunk and hopefully I’ll be your counselor next year as well! 2k21: Always a good summer back with the boys! We got good numbers this year and I hope everyone comes back next year. We’ve been working hard to revive the Liz and will continue to revive the Liz next year. Being on staff with all my brothers has been amazing and there’s no group of guys I’d rather be here with and run staff with in the coming years. Derosa: My brother. It’s all love. I’m blessed to have been your co for summer 2024! Being co’s with one of my brothers has been the best experience and makes me feel like a camper again. Alex: My brother. Being at camp with you has been awesome. You and your family have treated me like family and I’ll be forever grateful. Grateful to have been best bros for 10 years now. Sammy, Jason, & Plotty: Thank you for showing me what staff is really about. Big things to come next year. To many more laughs. Pink Flamingos: Excited for a big week ahead of us! PINK ALWAYS WINS!

Year after year, this place reminds me why I come back and why I never want to leave. Coming into this summer, I was feeling some of the stresses of growing up and was unsure about my future summer obligations beyond this, but once I felt the rumble of Gibbs and pulled into the eternal lot which I hold so dear, I knew it no longer mattered. For the time being, I was home, and was determined to make this another awesome summer. I met many new campers and staff and rekindled so effortlessly the connections with the rest of camp. The days began slow and sped up with time, the weeks went by quick but it’ll be fine, I tried to be in the moment. This has been one remarkable summer and I have some people to thank for that. 2K20: Once again our numbers shrink but we prevail stronger. I am so thankful for all the time I spent with each and every one of you this summer, and I am really hoping that it won’t stop here for many of us. You all mean a lot to me and I couldn’t have wished for a better group of guys to have had by my side these past 11 summers. Itchy: I am so happy to have had to pleasure of meeting and growing up with you. I love you like a brother and struggle to imagine Avoda without you as a part of it. I forever wish you the best. Avery: I enjoyed co-counseling with you this summer. Welcome to staff, I hope you stay some time. Bunk 4: I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to be many of you guys’ counselor for 2 years in a row, and for many others, your first counselor. I hope you had as fun a time as I did and that this is just the beginning for all of your Avoda careers.

AVERY KALISH

After a year off, I can say it was definitely worth coming back this summer and I enjoyed every second of it. Coming back made me realize that there is no place better than Avoda to spend your summer, and I am looking forward to returning for as long as I can. 2K21: Actually the best 14 in camp. I’m so glad we are finally on staff this year, with such large numbers as well. 14 jcs this year is absolutely 90+ retention. You guys are the reason I decided to come back this summer and I’m looking forward to making more memories with everyone when we are on senior staff. Bunk 4: Thank you guys for an awesome summer. We had our ups and downs but overall I wouldn’t change a thing. I hope you guys keep coming back to camp, it gets better and better every year. Bagels: you were a great co this summer, thanks for showing me the ropes on being a counselor. Veksler and Derosa: it was a pleasure sharing a cabin with you guys, y’all were awesome this year. Pelj: best beach doubles duo in camp. Ropes staff: I appreciate all the hard work we put in this summer. One period actually ran so the bonus was well earned. Great to be back Avoda.

Life is what you make of it, and that goes for all of the small details of it. In my eyes I’m lucky to come back to Avoda, so “working” as a camp counselor isn’t really working at Avoda, I’m blessed and honored to say I get to come back every summer and contribute to the culture of The Camp Avoda that I once experienced in bunk 1 and now experience on staff.

Year 2 at Avoda and I couldn’t have asked for a more amazing summer. It’s always so great to come back to a place I can call home and spend two months with familiar faces. Tispaquin has been cleaner than the Liz and the summer felt shorter than Idan’s hair line. Guy made an insane come back and waterfront staff has never been more locked in. 5A: Although the brain rot lasted for too long, we had a great run. Many ups and downs and plenty of coverage. Ocher: We hustled to lineup everyday and made sure to keep our areas as tidy as possible. There was a LOT to deal with but we made sure to keep bag>MH. Itchy: I wish…we did an amazing job as Co-Assistant Waterfront Directors and Co-dj’s thanks for holding up your end of the bargain. Israelis: Thank you for representing the beauty of Israeli culture and having a fire Israel day. Late night cumby’s runs will never be the same. Idan: I’m so happy you came back. The lore has never been this good and the plot is thickening. See you next summer! 2K2014: thank you for welcoming me to such an amazing family and encouraging me to contribute as much as possible to Avoda. Avoda: I can truly say that I feel at home every time I come back and I am so grateful to be a part of this family. Avoda is the greatest place on earth.

As my tenth summer comes to a close it truly feels like each one has been better than the last. I was somewhat nervous this year that camp would be less enjoyable as a staff member, but this summer has far exceeded my expectations. This is without a doubt, the best job in the world. Tennis Team: We definitely solidified our spot as the true Team Avoda. Adding to the trophy case was light work. Bunk 5B: You guys were a crazy group. Although we had some difficult moments, we really picked it up in the second month and I had a great time being your counselor. I’ll make sure to let your counselors next year know they need to keep you away from ice cream cake. Ariel...You’re a bot. Sammy and Wilkov: I learned a lot from you guys this summer. We locked it down. 2k21: Our numbers this year were elite. Gaining heads from CIT year to JC year was huge for the program and made the summer way more fun for sure... Stein, Avery, Ocher, and CB - Good looks. Running staff next year with you boys would be amazing so I hope I can find my way back to Gibbs. 2k20: I got a lot closer with so many of you boys this summer. I hope you guys come back next year. Veksler: Friday/Saturday Day Off on top. Also... You are Shrek. Danny, Ethan, and Nate: Thanks for taking me on Pink this year. I’m hyped to spend the last week of the summer with you guys. Zack: Come back next year. Summer at Avoda far surpasses Needham. Also, you’re a Cdubs captain so you don’t really have a choice... Good luck this week and try not to pop too much.

This summer was more than I could’ve asked for, I’m so happy I got to do it with so many of my boys. 2K20, another great year in the books. I think we did a great job on staff and I can’t wait to see what the fellas get up to next summer. Plotty: so glad we got another banger of a summer in together. Big things are waiting for you in staff next year. Drew: Being together for both DW and CW was an amazing experience. Camp needs you, you’re a huge part of staff and undoubtedly the best counselor. Jason: I’m so happy we finally got the chance to be on a team together again. This summer was so much more fun because we got to do it all together. Hitting the lot, running hoops, and getting some touches on the football were highlights of my summer. Cole and Gilly: Camp wasn’t the same without you, I hope you guys can come back next year and get a chance to run staff. Dot dots…Ro Mein…clam…Chris Paul’s hard drive…lobsters and shrimp,

Camp is full of ups and downs. You have the time of your life and you live out some of the most difficult experiences in tandem; every year they get more intense as the time I have left dwindles. Of course, it is truly thrilling to spend my summer working in a place where each new day is its own rollercoaster. Being on staff for a second year gives me all sorts of opportunities to try new things and step out of my comfort zone. Yet, with the lack of time I have left came some high expectations I had for myself, and I felt very lost at times. There is always the odd thing that sets you back here, and sometimes the best thing to do is just look around and let it pass. Even in my darkest hours this summer, each time I closed out the night and talked to my campers, they all said, without fail, that every day was amazing (they had nothing to back up that claim. It just “was”). This year I saw myself become so much more aware of the true tenet of each summer I spend here: every day on the shores of Tispaquin is a gift. I am alongside my brothers. I get paid to play frisbee and paddleboard, watch sports and be silly. I find myself learning new things and becoming a man. I get to follow in my father’s footsteps. I watch my campers learn and grow and become the best they can be. I keep experiencing, year after year, what becomes the greatest summer of my life. - - And it will just keep getting better. Shout outs: Nimi: ROD!!! It was so nice to meet you and get to know you this summer, and find out what makes being a staff member here so valuable through another person’s eyes. You will always be a true friend, no matter what anyone says. Tzur: Thanks for being there for me when I locked my keys out of my car. It was always nice to talk with you. I’ll keep in touch for any couscous-related requests… Theo: How happy I am to have back one of my friends from my time as a camper! Thanks for always noticing when I’m on aux. Bunk 5B: You have no idea how excited I was to have you guys again!!!! You made this summer so enjoyable with your silliness and escapades galore. I see a great 14 beginning to blossom and the makings of great Avodians in the works. I am honored to contribute to that, as well as to all your absolutely broken senses of humor. Keep on sacrificin’. Ariel, Skiddy, Daveed: Thanks for being there for me and making sure I don’t go too crazy. Sammy & Alex: Thanks for holding it down and being there for the campers. Interesting to get some perspective from guys who didn’t work with this crazy group last year. 2k20: We stayed strong this summer and I’m scared this may be the last year I spend with some of you guys, so let’s finish this summer off the best we can. Love yall. Bennett: The saga continues. I will never forget you. It’s hard to believe I’m really on staff. With my 8th summer, it’s crazy to think I get to work with my brothers and have the time of my life. This is truly the greatest place on earth. The bonds I’ve made with all of staff and more importantly my campers have been an incredible experience. I couldn’t picture my summer anywhere else. Bunk 6A: you boys were a special group and made my summer amazing. And I hope Jason and I made your summer special and fun. I hope you boys stay together and keep coming back because you’re truly a great 14. Jason Karas: My co-counselor, learning and working with you was truly a blast. Your the boy, and we got super close and you helped me be a better counselor. Playing 3rd hoops was also electric. I hope to see you next year. 2k2114: My brothers, I love you boys, and seeing us from bunk 4 to now being on staff is just crazy to think about. You boys made my summer and I wouldn’t wanna be anywhere else. Pre camp was definitely the fire can’t wait for next summer. Benny: BENNYAAAAAAAAAA. My brother, was an electric summer with you, having our late-night talks and coaching J hoops with you was something I won’t forget. Can’t wait to run staff next year. Ocher: My boy, my brother from home, finally you came back to camp and it was like you never left. What a summer we had, all those late-night talks before camp on the phone about how camp was going to play out exceeded my expectations. Peljo: Felt like we always were together. Love you bro camp was amazing with you just like every year. I feel we got even closer this year and I can’t wait to run it back and win league. I appreciate you giving me rides home and getting me food. Next summer is going to be the fire. Gaby: GOBOZERRRRRRR. It was a great summer with you coaching J hoops was the fire and I can’t wait to run it back next year. Camp Avoda: I love this place. I can’t wait to be back next year for another great summer and hope this place never changes.

As year number 9 comes to an end, it leaves me very sad but also excited for the future. To start it off 2k20, great job this summer we really stepped it up. All of staff you guys are beauties and there’s no one else I’d want to live with for 2 months. 6a, you guys are awesome and I look forward to visiting when you are running camp one day. Danny: I’m so proud of everything you’ve accomplished, now hopefully let’s do the last big one together. You’ve grown so much and Avoda is very lucky to have you sticking around for years to come. Plotty: I’m pretty confident this won’t be my last time writing your name on my staff profile, but camp wouldn’t be the same without you. Drew: thank you for always being there for us and fully saving me when I was down 0-2 bases loaded. Leon doesn’t stand a chance in league next year. Shmuel: The lot never was the same without us, same as hoops and ball. Glad we were together so much this summer as there’s no one else I’d rather do it with. Muck some clam ched. Cole/Gilly: sucks not having you boys here but I know we will have some more great memories in the years to come. Chuck: We really don’t lose.

Can’t believe I’m writing another staff profile. Feels like pre-camp was yesterday and I was just seeing all the boys for the first time. All good things must come to an end. This is the first time I’m leaving camp not knowing if I will be back. It’s a strange feeling, but if this is the last summer I’m happy to say it was the best one yet. I could not be more happy to call this place a home away from home throughout my youth and into my early adult years. Avoda plays a large part in the person I am today and the person I will become. I came in as Ben, and I’m somehow leaving as Plotty. I also came in with all my teeth and am leaving with half of one missing. Would not want it any other way. If this is it, thank you for everything Avoda. If you are reading this, please come back. You will not regret it. And cherish every single second that you have at camp because there will be a day where you have to walk away. Drew, Sammy, and Jason: My boys for life. Had a hell of summer. So many laughs shared together. Doffs will always be something I will never forget. Still got one more thing to check off the box. Let’s have a week fellas. Let’s make some memories and get in the lake. Drew, I apologize for bad romance. But it had to be done. Love you guys.

Bunk 6b: Holy. What a summer. You guys are all awesome campers. You guys have so much potential and I can’t wait to see you guys grow in a couple of years. All of you guys are so awesome and have so much personality. I don’t remember a night where I was not laughing from the shenanigans in the bunk. Christiano, you lost lights for the year. Sadik, you do very bad on your test. Micah and Dylan, please apply deodorant asap. Dark Knights: What a team, what a name. One of the craziest days of my life. Ty and Zack you guys were unreal. Best captains we could have asked for. Thank you to the whole staff. Would not want to do it with anyone else. The lake is a feeling that I will truly never forget. Thank you to everyone who made it possible. Blue Revs: Cannot wait for the week to start. Its gonna be one to remember. So locked in its unreal. Let’s get in this lake! JCs: You guys are a great age group. Better see you running staff in a few years. Gabby you are the biggest menace on staff menace. Veksler you tried your best. Chuck: Thank you for the opportunities you gave me this year. Grew way closer this summer from all the lifts and spending doff together. Always coming in clutch with the guy. But we are done with that trust. All Staff: Super fun year. So much energy in this group. Had an incredible summer. Thank all of you for putting in effort and making it one to remember. I made the big decision to come back to camp last summer with the goal of gaining community service hours in aid for my college search, I thought it would make it easier knowing that I would be working in an environment that I already knew, thus making the task easier. Little did I know how much more than that this place meant to me. I knew when I left camp last summer that I needed to come back as there was a lot I left on the table and unfinished business I had to see to. Having the greatest senior year in high school and then having the chance to be here right after has made one of the best years of my life and this great summer has played such a big part in that. To my brothers in 2k2114 I thank y’all for another amazing summer and to see most if not everyone back here is such a blessing. Seeing your faces back at camp this summer has made the best experience in becoming a staff member together as brothers. Thank you so much for the amazing future and wishing us all the best in our incoming futures. To Bunk 6A and Bunk 6B I thank you all for being such great campers and making such a great summer. I mean this honestly that this cabin has felt like the best atmosphere I have ever experienced and it made it an even bigger pleasure being your counselor. I can’t wait to see what you guys do in your futures and the great things you will do as true Avodians. To my Co-counselors Jason, Ben, Sam, and David it’s been the best and I wouldn’t choose to do this job with any other group of people. What a summer!

While it’s only my 9th year at Camp Avoda, it’s my 10th year anniversary since my first year in bunk 2. (Shoutout 2020 tornado watch). Half of my life I’ve been coming here every summer, and it really is the greatest place on earth. I hope to be back for many more summers, the grass really is greener at Avoda 2k2114: Shoutout the only 14 to have ten jcs three CITs and two 12ers. Nobody else I would’ve rather been with at precamp putting in hard work day and night. 2k21 runs Avoda lingo, Veksler is smart, Hass needs to get off the mic, Borky needs to take the hoodie off, Fluffer is a fluffer, darnell likes certain people, Avery shoutout 1-2 rock-wall, CB is still sick, Benny’s running brim day, Steindecker NEEDS a friend, Theo’s with Eric & Johnson, Leibman needs to get out of his car, Ocher didn’t show up for his joke, Gaby’s still in the stim corner, and Gorno can’t park. 6B: I couldn’t have asked for a better bunk but maybe could’ve asked for a cleaner one. Easily the worst waiter performance I’ve ever seen in a summer. You guys were the boys and came together to represent the bunk well (absolutely electric mini flagrush game). You all helped welcome in so many new campers to your 14, and I can’t wait to see what you guys do on the jr/sr side of the field. 1 2 3 4 5…Plotty: Thank you for everything you did as a co-counselor. You held down the bunk and were a great role model for a good counselor, I hope to see you back next year. CB: I had a shoutout written for you as my co, but you switched out of my bunk after first month. It was a great month with you bro and we ran 2nd Football. Tzur: You have to come back now I put it in the Avodian. Bunk 12: You guys are the boys and i’m glad I’ll get to be back for your 14 year. Shoutouts: Boat crew, silver jeep, israeli tea, peach, banquet, bunkos after leg day, dancing grass, whipped cream in coffee.

To come here as a little seven year old in 2013, I could have never imagined I would make it this long. The other thing I remember is crying all day and wanting to go home and never come back. With each year, the feeling changed and as I now approach what could be my final year I am not even close to ready to say goodbye. The friends I have made, the activities I have done and the things I learned are only becasue of this place and I do not want to give it up quite yet. Gaby: What a great Co. I have never really spent time with you, but being with you this year was great…better than having any other JC. You’re the boy and thanks for the cut. Jason, Plotty, Sammy: I have no idea how we have gotten here. To be on staff and the same CW team together is something I never even imagined would happen. I love you boys and there is no one else I would rather spend time with. White Phoenix: Tough loss but being with all you made it hurt less. We had fun just did not get it done…and Max I never switched up, your still my boy and I loved what we did. Blue Revolution: Boys, let’s have a week. We gonna cook them no doubt. Cole: This summer was not the same without you. Every morning at lineup I always felt a piece was missing. I never thought I would be here without you, we have always bunked together, were staff in the same cabin and you were my captain. It for sure sucked doing this without you but I am glad you’re back to yourself. Love you

Simultaneously the boyoyos and also terrible campers (kidding) (not kidding). You guys also weren’t so fun to hangout with. I’m happy I was able to have you guys and hope I helped contribute to this being one of your best summers ever. Dark Knights: I knew we won when I saw the staffs. I knew we won when we saw our list. It’s hard to believe my 10th summer at Avoda is coming to a close. However, this summer has been far and away the best one that I’ve had so far on the shores of Tispaquin. I’ve had the opportunity to strengthen old friendships and create new meaningful ones, all while having the most fun possible at the job. 2K2114: Can’t believe we finally made it to the staff boys. This year has been a wild ride and I think we’ve all gotten so much closer because of it. I really hope I get to spend more summers with you guys, and I couldn’t ask for a better group of people. Darnel and Nimi: Thanks for holding down the fort with me this year. While it certainly wasn’t the easiest job, we pulled through. Bunk 9: While we got off to a pretty rough start, I can confidently say now that you guys are ready to become leaders of this camp. I’ve really enjoyed watching you guys grow as both people and a 14, and had a blast being your counselor. Stein: Thanks for finally coming back bro. WashU ain’t ready for us. Vexler and Alex: Let’s have a week boys. We’ll show them why pink always wins. Bennay: Glad you finally got shafted. Welcome to the club. Can’t wait to watch Robocop with you. Avery: Shoutout to pennies and tickleball Gaby: Thanks for the cut. Hopefully it’ll raise me up the hierarchy.

And just like that, another summer at Avoda is over. Being on staff this year felt surreal as it doesn’t fully hit until the summer is officially over. It feels like just yesterday I was leaving home to drive down Gibbs once again ready for pre-camp, now I’m getting ready to leave this place for another 10 months. Going into this year I was still debating if I would come back for another year after this, but from having to figure out how to run Makerspace from the ground up to seemingly reffing Polo every first period, this summer will never be forgotten and without even a shadow of a doubt I know I will be coming back next year. This place is magical and now with my 5th summer in the books I can’t wait for my 6th. I can’t imagine a summer without this place. 2K2114: We finally made it on staff and I’m so glad to be able to call you my brothers, I wouldn’t want to spend my summer with anyone else. Bunk 9: Thank you for the crazy summer, there wasn’t a dull moment with you guys and I can’t wait to watch you all grow as people and athletes. Gorno: First year as counselors and I couldn’t have asked for a better co, to many more years on staff Peljo: Thank you for all the wild rides back to camp and the dunkin runs Borky: We’ll have our 1v1 soon… just don’t be breaking your hand again

Remember that camp is like a pizza. I forget what the analogy was but it was important. I’ll add that even if you don’t get the toppings you wanted, still make the most of it and I tried to. This place is awesome and nothing comes close. 2k20: Started with a bang let’s have this final week be just as fun Bunk 10: Y’all some goons. Go beat 14 in deadzone next year. It’s up to you guys to unite as a whole, no counselor or older bunk can do that. If you do, you’ll have so much more fun at camp. Idan: They let us run it back and I’d have it no other way. Theo: You’re the boss, keep these kids in shape next year Avoda: Who knows what’s ahead. If this is the end, there’s nothing I’d change.

Coming back for a second year at camp Avoda as an Israeli counselor is a surreal experience, because this time instead of feeling out the American culture and camp as a whole, this time I was back in camp because I fell in love with it. The past year has been extremely challenging for the Israeli nation, I just wish everyone had a place like camp, somewhere they could feel free, safe, and have fun. Bunk 10: This is my second summer with most of you guys, it’s great seeing you guys grow up so quickly as a 14 and as people. All the way to the docks, and back. Griffin: Greatest comeback of all time, we absolutely killed it this summer. Keep swipin’ Theo: Thank you for bringing so much positivity, respect, happiness and authenticity to our bunk. I learned a lot from you, best woodchopper in the west. Israeli Staff: As head of Israelis, thank you for holding my hand all the way. I needed that. Even though you all gave me a hard time. Cooper: Manifestation is in full effect. Thank you for everything, I really don’t know what I would’ve done without you this summer. Let’s have the next one even crazier. Admin: Thank you for taking care of me when I needed, finding solutions to my problems, and always reminding me that I’m just having a bad day and things aren’t so bad as they seem.

After unfortunately missing last summer, coming back to camp was such an incredible feeling. This place has been a part of my life for a long time but this summer has been the best by far, being able to imprint the values and lessons that were taught to me as a camper, to my campers is a privilege I cannot begin to describe. There is no other place I would rather spend my summer.

Another summer for the books. This summer went by the fastest by far. It’s been a great run at camp and I’m blessed for every year I’ve been able to spend here. 2k18: You guys never fail to put a smile on my face. So glad I was able to become your brother. All other staff: keep the traditions alive and keep using the Liz and lot. Chuck and Reese: It’s been a pleasure being with both of you as co-counselors for a second summer. Bunk 12: You guys were a great bunk this year, I hope your 14 year is even better. White Phoenix: Should’ve won that, we let it get away from us. Wouldn’t have rather been on any other team. White Flame: I hope this week goes how I’m imaging it - with us winning everywhere and jumping in that lake. Avoda: Thank you for the last and best 10 years of my life. I wouldn’t be who I am without you.

Wow! I cannot believe how fast this summer has gone by but what an amazing summer it has been. This place is so special and I’m so grateful to have found Avoda and spent 4 summers with all of you! This place is truly one in a million and I hope you all come back as long as you possibly can. Bunk 12: You guys are a small and rambunctious group of kids and it’s been so much fun being your counselor for the last two summers. Thank you guys for a fantastic summer, I loved going on the canoe trip with you boys and so proud of you guys for getting straight 10s on bunk clean up every day! Hope you all have a great off season and I hope to see you all next summer! Waterfront staff: Thank you boys so much I could not have run the waterfront as safe and successfully without you guys, you guys are the best. Waterfront Staff=Best Staff. 2K18: Although I didn’t get to come here as a camper it’s been amazing being on staff with you guys and I am truly honored to be an honorary member of your 14. I’ve loved getting to know you guys and I hope we stay in touch over the year. Adin and Charlie: Thank you so much for being phenomenal cos it has been so much fun running bunk 12 with you guys. Truly a summer to remember hope to see you boys soon. Hope you all have an amazing off season and many more summers at Camp Avoda!

Another great summer at the best place on earth, shoutout everyone for making it such a time wish Redry and Terc were back but what can you do. Dark Knights: What a ride we had, probably the most stressful day I’ve ever had at Avoda and it definitely took some years off my life but wouldn’t want to run it with anyone else, you truly made the whole experience 10 times better. Zack and Ty growing up being a camper with you and then being able to be your general might be the coolest full circle moment I’ve had while at camp. You guys led the team phenomenally and I’m so proud of u guys. Blue Revs: I’m so excited for what’s to come, it’s so lit that I got to build my staff from scratch and cannot wait to see what will we accomplish together. Leh ride Thadland: Best league team I’ve ever coached or been on. You guys worked so well together and made it so that we came out of most days 2-0. Chip soon.

As my 13th summer comes to an end I would like to thank everyone that helped me this summer, the best summer at Camp Avoda. It is hard to believe that I am a 14 counselor, yet again. It’s an incredible honor to get once, let alone twice and something I would do a million times over. Each summer, while the people may look a little different, the experience is always the same. I get to spend another summer with my brothers and my closest friends. To see staff grow to such a large size this summer was truly amazing. I didn’t know how close I would become with the younger staff and I am confident these strong relationships will last forever. It is one of the saddest things I’ve had to experience to say I expect this to be my last summer. I hope there is some way, somehow that I can pull off another summer. But if this is it I’m proud to say that I made it my Bar Mitzvah year. This place has always and will always be my home and paradise. Shoutouts: Owen/Alex/Max: Being a 14 counselor with my best friends is something I dreamed of my whole life and for it to happen is truly amazing. I couldn’t ask for a better crew to spend my last summer with and I’m so glad we were all able to make it back for another summer. 2k1814: It’s so incredible that as 3 year SCs we still have 6 of us back and remain the best age group on staff. I’m glad I got to spend another summer with y’all. 2k2314: I’m so glad that I eventually got to be y’alls counselor this summer. I want to thank you guys for giving me an amazing summer and allowing me to try my best at giving you guys the best 14 year you could ask for. It was amazing watching you guys grow up from bunk 1 to bunk 14 and seeing how close and strong you guys got as a 14. I hope y’all enjoyed this summer and enjoyed having me as a counselor. I encourage all of you to come back next year, CIT year is truly something else. Remember that while the offseason may be fun, there is truly no place like Avoda and that will never change no matter what position you hold in camp.

Danny/Ethan/Nate: Glad to see you guys back for another another another last summer at camp. I guess I’ve probably written this same thing the past three years. Despite what you say I know you’ll all be back next year on some level since y’all refuse to leave. Younger Staff: You guys made staff so strong this summer by having a crazy amount of you back. It was incredible to see. I hope you guys all continue to come back because staff only gets better and is only as strong with you guys there. Thank you to all of Staff for making this summer amazing. There’s no place like Avoda!

What a time it’s been at Avoda this summer. I can’t believe it’s over. This summer has been a roller coaster and I’m here for the ride. No place i would rather be than Avoda this summer. As it could be my last summer here, I am glad to have kept coming for this long and happy to do it with the undefeated 2k1814. Avoda is more than just a blast as camp teaches you plenty of life lessons you would not find in any other occupation, which is why I am lucky to have been able to come back all this time. 2k20: take 14 next year. You will not regret it. White Phoenix: Phoenix staff was one of the best staffs I have been apart of and wouldn’t change a single thing about it. We balanced the challenge and the booling at the same time. Phoenix know how to do it right. Drew whatever happens in the coming week I’ll never forget the birds. Adin: The true gator, thank you for running desert war with me. I couldn’t imagine picking someone else for that position. Already thinking about alumni weekend with you again. Eli: Carlos I’m very glad I got to spend a summer in the same bunk with you. I know we have been talking about this summer since we were campers and it’s finally come. Although it could be the last summer here, I’ll see you in 43 Standish. Alex: Back to back like back to back - drake - max. Alex another great year at Avoda, when is it not. Whoopty frickin do do. Owen: Sherm it’s been an electric summer in the back of 14! Been great being your co. Can’t wait for penn state brothaman. Chuck: So happy you came back this year. Very glad I was able to go against you in dw. Good luck in the next one. 2k2314: Sup boys. I’m very thankful to be your 14 counselor I hope y’all had a blast like I did.
