Fiesta Activities Holy Hour marks World Day of Prayer for Vocations by Dale Bascon

Last April 28, 2012, the second day of our Novena Masses in honor of Our Lady of La Paz, a Holy Hour was held after the Eucharistic celebration presided by Fr. Brian Rances, MI. In that Holy Hour, which was presided by Fr. Gabby Garcia, MI, our parish community joined the whole Catholic world in praying for vocations to the priesthood and to the religious life. This was in line with the celebration of the 49th World Day of Prayer for Vocations on April 29, Good Shepherd Sunday. The Holy Hour was the response of the Archdiocese of Manila to Pope Benedict’s invitation to observe that special day. The theme for this year was “Vocations: Gift of the Love of God”. Before the Lord Jesus in the exposed Blessed Sacrament, the assembly gathered that night prayed and listened to the Word of God. In his short homily, Fr. Gabby pointed out the need for more priests and more people who will pray for priests, for seminarians and for young people discerning God’s call. It was fitting that we prayed for vocations to the priesthood before the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist because it was during the institution of the Eucharist that the Lord Jesus also instituted the priesthood. Hopefully, more people would come to realize the importance and urgency of praying for vocations every day.

Translacion- Isang Paglalakbay kasama si Maria! ni James Sombilon

Noong Abril 27, 2012, isinagawa ang Translacion ng ating parokya kaisa ang mga residente ng Brgy. Singkamas. Ang Translacion ay ang pagpuprusisyon sa imahe ng ating Mahal na Patrona, ang Our Lady of La Paz and Good Voyage mula sa ating simbahan patungo sa kapilya ng Brgy. Singkamas. Ito ay nagsilbing unang aktibidad ng ating parokya para sa siyam na araw ng panalangin at paghahanda para sa kanyang kapistahan. Ang Translacion ay isinagawa upang mapag-isa ang dalawang barangay sa nalalapit na kapistahan at nang sa gayon ay maipabatid na ang Barangay Singkamas ay buong-pusong inaanyayahang makiisa at makisaya sa mga aktibidad na isasagawa ng ating parokya. Sa kabilang banda, paano nga natin maisasalarawan at mabibigyang kahulugan ang nasabing gawain? Maaari natin itong isalarawan na sa ating paglalakbay sa buhay, lagi nating kasama ang ating Inang Maria. Sa bawat pagsubok ay lagi natin siyang katuwang at ipinapanalangin niya tayo sa kanyang anak na si Hesus. Ang Translacion ay isang paglalakbay – paglalakbay patungo sa kasiyahan at pagkakaisa. Nais nitong iparating na saanman at anuman ang tahakin natin sa buhay, laging nakaantabay si Maria. Lagi niya tayong ipinagdarasal. Ang kailangan lang nating gawin ay manalangin, magtiwala at manalig na anuman ang harapin nating dusa at hirap, si Maria ay laging nariyan bilang ating Ina. Ina na kakalungin tayo at hahagkan sa tuwing tayo ay sugatan. Ina na magbibigay pag-asa na mapapawi ang ating luha. Ina na maglalapit sa atin kay Kristo na kanyang Anak na naroroon sa kung saan walang hanggan ang ligaya sa dulot Niyang kaligtasan.

Youth Night2012, alay sa Diyos at kay Maria ni Dale Bascon

Naging isang gabi ng saya at pasasalamat sa Diyos at kay Maria ang Youth Night na ginanap noong ika-30 ng Abril 2012, pagkatapos ng ika-4 na Novena Mass sa ating Ina ng Kapayapaan at Matiwasay na Paglalakbay. Sa pamamagitan ng Youth Night ay nakiisa ang mga kabataan, sa pangunguna ng Parish Youth Committee, sa pagpupugay sa ating Mahal na Ina sa kanyang kapistahan. Sa gabing iyon ay ipinamalas ng mga miyembro ng iba’t ibang youth organizations ang kanilang mga talento at inialay ito sa Panginoon at sa Mahal na Birhen. Isang banda na binubuo ng mga kabataan mula sa iba’t ibang organisasyon ang nanguna sa mga praise songs sa iba’t ibang bahagi ng programa. Nagbigay ng isang maikling song and dance number tungkol sa youth empowerment ang Ministry of Altar Servers. Dance presentation naman ang sumunod mula sa PREX Charismatic Choir. Sa kalagitnaan ng programa ay nagbigay ng isang activity si Bro. Paul Alvarado, MI upang magkakilanlan ang mga kabataang natipon doon. Nagbigay rin siya ng isang maikling talk tungkol sa mga pinagdadaanan ng mga kabataan sa panahon ngayon. Sa pagpapatuloy ng programa ay nagpakitang gilas din sa pagsayaw ang mga miyembro ng La Paz Youth Choir. Isang chorale presentation naman ang inihandong ng Legion of Mary. Inawit nila ang Hail Holy Queen bilang pagpupugay sa ating Mahal na Ina. Bago natapos ang gabi ay nagbigay ng hamon si Fr. Gabby Garcia, MI sa mga kabataan na maging higit pang aktibo hindi lamang sa mga pagdiriwang kundi pati sa paglilingkod. Natapos ang gabi sa panalangin at pagawit ng Make A Stand, ang theme song ng Year of the Youth 2010 – 2011. Sa ginanap na programang ito ay inaasahan ng Parish Youth Committee na muli nawang naipaalala sa mga kabataan na ang talento ay galing sa Diyos at dapat itong gamitin sa paglilingkod sa Kanya.

Living Rosary by Jane Bullosos& Jovy Garcia

In preparation for the Feast of Our Lady of La Paz, we celebrated last May 1, 2012 the 5 th day of the Novena Mass followed by the Living Rosary at the church plaza. Members from different organizations holding colorful balloons joined as they formed a big rosary with lighted candles in front of them. Fr. Gabriel Garcia, our parish priest, started the event as he explained the meaning of the colorful balloons which formed a big rosary like the colorful Missionary Rosary. YELLOW represents Asia, BLUE represents the Pacific Islands, RED represents America, WHITE represents Europe and GREEN represents Africa. He also added that this prayer is for peace, love and faith; and that in this world we may see Christ in our lives. Ate Gege Comaling, our PPC President, led the praying of the Luminous Mysteries and all

followed as they completed the rosary. Despite some technical problems and rainy skies, the living rosary was successful. We thank God for stopping the rain for a moment and allowing us to offer prayers for the world together with our dear Mother Mary.

Marian Quiz Bee: How Well Do We Know Our Mother? by Maica Bayanin

The Legion of Mary and the Lay Ministers sponsored the Marian Quiz Bee last May 2, 2012 at Our Lady of La Paz Parish. This activity was part of the week-long preparation for the parish fiesta. With utmost enthusiasm, the event was hosted by the very vigorous Ate Liza Clarin-Lontoc. Ate Gege Comaling led the opening prayer. Soon after that, Fr. Gabriel Garcia, M.I., our parish priest, filled his opening remarks with delight and gratefulness for the opportunity to hold the activity. Seeing the smiles and the glow in the eyes of the people present, anyone could easily discern that they were very excited to get into the game. The Marian quiz bee, which was participated in by six registered groups with four members each, intended to pay tribute to our Mother Mary and to strengthen our faith. It also served as a form of catechesis through which the people were engaged not to compete but to experience Mary’s love for us. It also provided some trivia about the history of our parish. Fr. Gabby described the activity as “a way of expressing our concern for one another and of gaining knowledge about Mary and our Parish.” The event went very well. Without a doubt, everyone who was there really felt the presence of Mama Mary from within. It has been a solemn gathering of the children of God.

A Motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Story ni Maricris Ecleo

Noong May 3, 2012, ang ika-pitong araw ng nobena para sa selebrasyon ng kapistahan ng ating Ina, Our Lady of La Paz and Good Voyage, naghandog ng film showing ang greeters at collectors ang pelikulang "A Mother's Story," sa ganap na ika-7:30 ng gabi. Dumalo dito ang mga miyembro ng iba't-ibang organisasyon sa ating parokya gayun din ang mga parishioners. Bumuhos ang luha sa kalagitnaan ng pelikula at kasabay nito ang malakas na pagbuhos ng ulan. Ngunit, hindi ito naging dahilan upang hindi magpatuloy ang programa. Hindi naging hadlang ang ingay sa labas upang hindi maiparating ang mensahe ng nasabing pelikula sa lahat. Tunay na napakahirap na lumaki ng walang inang nakakasama at nag-aaruga at nagpapakita ng kanyang pagmamahal sa atin. Napakalaking kakulangan sa paglaki ng mga anak ang maiwan na mag-isa. Ito ay may malalim na epekto sa paghubog ng pag-uugali, pananaw sa buhay at espiritwalidad ng mga anak. Kahit na may ibang mga taong nariyan, ang ina at ang ina lamang ang makapagbibigay ng seguridad na ating kailangn. Ngunit sa isang banda, hindi madaling maging isang ina. Hindi madaling pagsabayin ang mangarap ng magandang buhay para sa mga anak at ang pagpapalaki sa kanila ng tama at ayon sa kanilang pangangailangan lalong -lalo na sa mga OFW. Ang isang magandang buhay o masayang pamilya ay dapat na ginagampanan ng buong pamilya at hindi lamang ng ina. Ang paguunawaan ay napakahalaga upang lalong lumalim ang samahan at tunay na makamtan ang kaligayahan. Importanteng isaisip, "Happiness is success in itself." At sa huli, ang programa at ang selebrasyon ay naging matagumpay.

Sumayaw, Sumunod sa Tugtugin! Ni Jocel Cardenas at Kimberly

Isang ball-room dancing ang naganap noong ika-4 ng Mayo 2012, sa ganap na 7:30 ng gabi. Nilahukan ng ibat ibang organisasyon at mga non-parishioners ang nasabing aktibidad na idinaos sa plaza ng parokya ng La Paz. Nagsimula ang kasiyahan ng pamunuan ni Ginoong John Yatco, isang propesyonal na mananayaw, ang sayawan sa saliw ng makamoderno at klasikong mga tugtugin. Naragdagan ang saya ng gabi nang ang lahat ng organisasyon at si Padre Gabriel Garcia, Kura Paroko, ay nakiisa sa indakan at kasayahan. Nagpapasalamat ang lahat sa samahan ng Lectors and Commentators sa pagorganisa ng aktibidad na talaga nga namang nakatulong sa paglinang ng galing sa pagsasayaw, pakikisama sa iba at kumpyansa sa sarili. Muli, isang pasasalamat mula sa mga labing may ngiti ang ipinababatid ng mga taong galak na galak na nakiindak at nakipagkulitan sa bawat isa.

Prusisyon ng Mahal na Birhen niVince Henry M. Salles

Ang bisperas ng piyesta ay punung-puno ng mga biyaya at sorpresa. Nagsimula ang araw na ito sa pagsasanay ng mga lingkod (mga lektor at altar servers) para sa Solemn Pontifical Mass kinabukasan. Kabado ang lahat, ngunit puno ng kagalakan dahil darating ang Arsobispo ng Maynila, ang Kanyang Kabunyian Luis Antonio Tagle, D.D. Habang nagsasanay ang mga lektor at altar server, naghahanda naman ng mga caroza ang ilang lingkod para sa prusisyon. Pinun么 nila ng magagara at mahahalimuyak na bulaklak ang mga caroza, na lululan sa mga imahen ng Mahal na Birhen. Umaambon pa nang magsimula ang prusisyon ng mag-a-alas-siete ng gabi. Handang-handa ang lahat na sumuong sa ulan, matuloy lamang ang pinaghandaang prusisyon. Nakapila na ang mga altar server sa unahan ng prusisyon, kasunod ang musiko na nakasuot ng magagarang damit. Handang-handa na ring umindak ang mga mananayaw na may dalang mga bulaklak at laso, kasama ng mga batang may dalang A-V-E-M-A-R-I-A. Sa may gitna ng pila, nagaabang na rin ang mga parokyano na may dalang mga maliliit na imahen ng Mahal na Birhen. Malakas talaga ang Mahal na Birhen sa Panginoon, dahil sa pagsisimula ng prusisyon, humina ang pag-ulan, kaya matiwasay na naka-usad ang prusisyon. Nakasuot ang imahen ng Mahal na Birhen ng La Paz ng isang gintong regalia, ang

kasuotan niyang pampista. Masiglang tumuloy ang prusisyon sa indak ng musiko at indayog ng mga mananayaw. Kakaiba ang prusisyong ito dahil napagsama ang pagiging taimtim at maligaya ng mga kasali. Nang makarating sa kanto ng Vito Cruz at Balagtas ang prusisyon, nagpasya ang ating Kura Paroko na pabalikin na ito sa simbahan dahil lumakas ulit ang pag-ambon. Pagkarating sa simbahan, tinapos ang rosaryo sa Litaniya ng Mahal na Birhen, at sinundan ang isang pagtatanghal ng mga mananayaw. Ang mga babaeng mananayaw ay miyembro ng Legion of Mary, isang samahan na nakatuon sa pagpapalaganap ng mapagmahal na debosyon kay Maria sa pamamagitan ng pagdarasal at pagaapostolado. Bilang pang-wakas sa prusisyon, ininsensuhan ang mga imahen sa caroza at binasbasan ang mga ito, kasama ng mga tao.

Fiesta Activities Arsobispo ng Maynila Nagdiwang ng Misa Solemne Pampiyesta nNi Vince Henry M. Salles

Ang Kapistahan ng patron ng isang simbahan ay napakahalaga, kaya naman inilalagay ito bilang “maringal na kapistahan” (solemnity).Ang Kapistahan ng ating patrona ay ipinagdiriwang tuwing unang linggo ng Mayo. Ngayong taon, ang unang linggo ng Mayo ay tumapat sa ikalimang Linggo ng Muling Pagkabuhay ng Panginoon. Ang Ebanghelyo ng araw na ito ay tumutukoy sa talinghaga ni Jesus sa puno ng ubas at mga sanga. Isang oras bago ang Missa Solemne ng Arsobispo, di na mapakali ang lahat sa paghahanda. Isa-isa nang dumating ang ilang paring Kamilyano, mga diyakono, at ilang mga lingkod. Labinlimang minuto bago magalas nuvbe, dumating na si Arsobispo Chito. Sinalubong siya ni Padre Gabby, kasama ng ilang parokyanong tuwang-tuwa. “Ang blooming n’ya”, sabi ng isang parokyano. Dumiretro si Arsobispo Chito sa sakristiya upang magbihis pangmisa. Inasikaso siya ng mga miyembro ng Mother Butler Guild – ang mga nanay nating kulay tsokolate. Habang tinutulungan nila ang Arsobispo at ilang nakikipag-misang pari sa pagbibihis, di nila pinalampas ang pagkakataong makakuha ng litrato sa Pastol ng Maynila – wari siyang isang artista na pinagkakaguluhan ng lahat. Nagsimula ang Banal na Misa sa pagpapakilala ng pagdiriwang. Marilag na nagsimula ang pambungad na awit, na sumaliw sa pagpasok ng mga lingkod. Nauuna sa pila ang mga altar server, kasunod ang mga tagapagbasa, ang mga tagapagbigay ng komunyon, mga makikipagmisang pari, mga diyakono, at ang Arsobispo sa huli. Nang makarating siya sa dambana, hinalikan niya ito at ininsensuhan ang paligid. Binati niya ang mga tao,

Page 8 “Sumainyo ang kapayapaan!” Ito mismo ang pagbati ni Kristo sa kanyang mga alagad nang siya’y muling mabuhay. Nang sumapit ang pagkanta sa Gloria, sinabayan ng ating Arsobispo sa “pag-awit” ang isang deaf-mute interpreter. Galak na galak siyang “umawit” kasabay ng mga nagsisimba. Hindi nawala ang pagiging palabiro ng ating Arsobispo sa kanyang homiliya. Ang pangunahing punto niya dito ay ang palagiang pananatili kay Jesus. Nagbigay siya ng tatlong paraan kung paanong mananatili kay Jesus: una, pananalig at pananampalataya sa Kanya; ikalawa, pagiibigan; at ikatlo, ang pananatili ng Kanyang Salita sa atin. Kapag hindi natin naisabuhay ang tatlong ito, siguradong mahihiwalay tayo kay Jesus. Si Maria ang pinakamagaling na huwaran ng pananatili kay Jesus – hindi niya iniwan si Jesus hanggang sa Krus. Siya ang sangang hindi humiwalay kay Jesus. Siya ang Babae ng Pananalig, ang Babae ng Pag-ibig, at ang Babaeng Tapat sa Salita ng Diyos. Mataimtim na nagdiwang ang ating Arsobispo ng Banal na Misa – siya’y hindi lamang “Alter Christus” (kapwa Kristo), kundi “Ipse Christus” (si Kristo mismo)! Nang matapos ang Banal na Komunyon, pinagkalooban ng maliliit na imahen ni San Camilo at Our Lady of La Paz ang ating mahal na Arsobispo. Ibinigay ito ng tagapangulo ng Parish Pastoral Council at Finance Council na sina Socorro Comaling at Shirley Syfu, kasama ng maraming pasasalamat sa Kanyang Kabunyian. Nagkaroo n ng isang simpleng agape ang Parish Pastoral Council kasama ang Arsobispo. Dito nangako siyang muling babalik sa ating Parokya sa madaling panahon.

HOMILIYA NG KANYANG KABUNYIAN LUIS ANTONIO TAGLE SA MARINGAL NA KAPISTAHAN NG MAHAL NA BIRHEN NG KAPAYAPAAN AT MATIWASAY NA PAGLALAKBAY Our Lady of La Paz Parish Church 6 May 2012, 9 AM Mass

Tayo po ay nagpapasalamat sa Diyos sa pagsapit po na naman ng pagdiriwang ng Kapistahan ng ating parokya sa karangalan ng Panginoon at sa atin din pong mahal na patrona, ang Mahal na Ina ng Kapayapaan at ng Matiwasay na Paglalakbay. Alam ko ho na medyo mainit, ‘no ho? Pero ganyan talaga ‘pag Fiesta – umuulan man, mainit man, kailangang ipagdiwang. Kaya tirik na tirik ang araw, mainit, sana ang ating mga mukha mukhang araw din! Mainit na ‘yan! Kasi sikat ang araw sa noo, mukhang bumabagyo naman sa mukha! Ayan! Mukhang Fiesta na! (ngumiti) Maganda po ang ating mga pagbasa. At ito ang mga pagbasa ngayong Linggo – Ikalimang Linggo ng Panahon ng Muling Pagkabuhay ng Panginoon. At napakalaki rin ng sinasabi tungkol po sa ating Mahal na Ina. Sa Ebanghelyo, malinaw na malinaw na sinasabi ni Jesus na inaasahan ng Ama na tayo ay maging mabunga. Mali po yung kaisipan na nagsasabi: “Mabait naman ang Ama e! Kahit ano pa ang buhay ko, mabait ang Ama.” Sinasabi po sa Ebanghelyo, inaasahan ng Ama na makita sa ating buhay ang mga bunga! Gusto Niya magbunga tayo. At ang ginagamit na talinghaga ay ang sanga. Wala naman siguro sa atin na nasa tamang isip na ang pangarap sa buhay ay, “Sana ‘wag akong mamunga para ako itapon at sunugin.” Siguro naman lahat kayo gusto maging sanga na namumunga para hindi tayo itapon at sunugin.

Pero pati yung namumunga ay pinuputulan daw para lalo pang mamunga. Yung mga sangang mabunga, hindi rin pala naman makakatakas sa mga ilang sakit ng pruning – mga pagsubok, mga sakripisyo. Pero lahat ‘yan ay para mamunga tayo. Ngayon, ang tanong: papa’no ba tayo makakapamunga bilang mga sanga? Ang sabi ni Jesus, “Manatili kayo sa Akin.” Kung papaanong ang sanga, kapag nahiwalay sa puno ay walang buhay, ganun din tayo. Napakabait ni Jesus. Siya ang puno; ang buhay Niya ay pinadadaloy sa atin. Sino tayo para makatanggap ng buhay ni Jesus? E mahal Niya tayo e. Tayo’y mga sanga. Kaya ang sanga, kumukuha ng buhay mula sa puno. Ang buhay ng puno ay ibinabahagi sa sanga. Kaya lamang, kailangang manatili tayo sa puno. Hiwalay sa puno na si Jesus, wala tayong buhay, wala tayong bunga. Samakatuwid, para mamunga, si Jesus dapat ang ating buhay. ‘Wag na tayong kukuha pa ng buhay sa iba. Kung saan ka kumukuha ng buhay, ‘yon ang iyong bunga. Halimbawa, yung mga humuhugot ng buhay sa pera, yan ang nagiging bunga: mukha kang pera! Kasi ang buhay mo, nasa pera. E di yun ang bunga mo! Mukha kang barya. Wala ka nang pakikipagkapwa tao. Ang tingin mo na lang sa ibang tao lagi pera, mauutangan, mahihiraman, madudukutan. Ingat kayo sa katabi niyo. Baka mandurukot ‘yan. (laughs) Maraming mandurukot ngayon sa loob ng simbahan. Kapag ang buhay mo, nasa rangya, yan din ang magiging bunga mo. Kailangan ang t-shirt de kalidad. Kailangan ang sapatos de kalidad. Ayaw magsuot ng binili sa Baclaran. Kasi ang buhay mo nasa signature! Kaya yun ang magiging

Bishop’s Homily bunga mo. Kapag ang buhay mo ay nasa porma, ‘yan ang bunga mo. Tatlong oras ka sa harapan ng salamin para ayusin ang kapirasong buhok. Ilang oras sa harapan ng salamin para pantayin ang mga kilay. ‘Yan ang bunga mo kasi dun ka kumukuha ng buhay. Pero kung ang buhay ay kinukuha kay Jesus, wow! Ano ang bunga mo? Bunga ng pag-ibig! Dahil ang buhay ng Diyos kay Jesus ay pag-ibig. Ang Diyos ay pag-ibig. Malinaw naman siguro yun. Tayong mga binyagan, tayo na naging bahagi na ng buhay ng Panginoon, parati Niyang pinaaalalahanan: “Huwag na kayong huhugot ng buhay sa iba pa. Ako na ang inyong puno; ang buhay Ko ang maging buhay niyo rin para kayo mamunga.” Ang tanong po: papaano ba tayo mananatili kay Jesus? Papaano ba ang sanga na buhay tulad natin ay makakapanatili sa puno na si Jesus? May tatlong sagot po ang mga pagbasa. Sa Ikalawang Pagbasa mula sa Unang Sulat ni Apostol San Juan, sabi po niya dito, para tayo ay manatili kay Jesus, tayo po ay manalig sa Kanya. ‘Yan ang una. Manalig tayo sa Kanyang Anak na si Jesus. Sa pamamagitan ng pananampalataya, tinatanggap natin si Jesus at ipinauubaya ang buhay natin sa Kanya. Kaya sa pananalig, dikit tayo kay Jesus. Faith! E Year of Faith pa naman ang idineklara ng Santo Papa. Kaya sana ang Taon ng Pananampalataya ay lalong magpahigpit sa ating ugnayan kay Jesus. So yun po ang una- faith. Kaya ang tanong: gaano ba kalalim at kasigla ang ating pananampalataya? Kasi kapag mahina ang pananampalataya, para tayong sanga na humihiwalay na sa puno. Alam niyo, nakakatuwa naman nakakakita pa tayo ng mga kabataan dito sa ating parokya. Kasi ho maraming lugar sa ibang panig ng mundo. Minsan nga ho nag-Misa ako sa isang parokya sa Northern Italy. Noong ako’y nag-hohomiliya na, parang ang pakiramdam ko, parang alangan akong hindi ako lumalapat. Iniisip ko, dahil ba

Italian ang Misa, dahil ba nasa foreign land ako kaya hindi lumalapat? Parang ganun. E di tinapos ko na din. Nang nakaupo na ako, natuklasan ko bakit ako parang hindi at home. Kasi wala akong nakita na kahit isang bata at teenager sa mga nagsisimba. Puro matatanda, naka-wheelchair, naka-baston. Parang nanibago ako. Sabi ko papa’no na after 20 years? Wala nang mga sanga na nakadikit kay Kristo. ‘Pag nawala na itong mga nagsisimba ngayon, wala nang bagong sanga na mananampalataya! Kaya mula noon pagbabalik ko, sabi ko hindi na ako magagalit kapag may mga bata na umiiyak, mga bata na palakad-lakad, mga teenager na kuchichian nang kuchichi-an. ‘Di bale na! At least may bata na sanga! Mas gusto ko pang naririnig yung iyak ng bata, ng sanggol, “Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!”, kaysa sa buong simbahan naririnig mo mga ubo, ubo (umubu-ubo). Para bang malalagutan na ng hininga, mga sanga na madudurog na! Baka pati ang puno, patay na! ... Kaya sabi ko sa mga pari, “’Wag kayong mabubuwisit kapag may mga batang palakad-lakad d’yan. At least may bagong sanga. May mga lugar, walang umiiyak kasi walang bata! Kaya pala tahimik ang simbahan kasi wala nang sanggol.” Ayun o, may sanggol dun. Paiyakin n’yo, Ma’am, paiyakin n’yo! (tumawa) ‘Wag naman. Iyan, pananampalataya, hope! Nakadikit sa pamamagitan ng pananampalataya.

Bishop’s Homily O, may ikalawa pa. Sabi ni San Juan, manalig tayo sa Kanyang Anak at mag-ibigan gaya ng iniutos ni Kristo sa atin. ‘Yan daw ang ikalawa para manatili sa puno na si Jesus – magibigan! Siguro naman hindi na natin ‘yan kailangan pang balibaliktarin sa isip kasi ang pag-ibig nag-uugnay. Ang kabaliktaran ng pag-ibig, kawalan ng pagibig, pag-iinggitan, ang pagsisiraan, hiwalayan ‘yan. Para tayo sama-samang makadikit sa puno pag-ibig! Pag-ibig ang nagdidikit. Ang away ang naghihiwa-hiwalay. Kaya para tayo mapadikit lagi kay Kristo – pag-ibig sa isa’t isa! At sa Ebanghelyo, sabi po rito, mananatili tayo sa Kanya kung “mananatili sa inyo ang aking salita.” So tatlo ho ‘yan, ‘no ho. Para manatili kay Jesus – pananampalataya, pag-ibig, at ang Kanyang Salita manatili sa atin. O heto, sumisimba tayo linggu-linggo. Nananatili ba yung Salita na ipinahayag at ipinaliwanag? O baka pagkatapos naman ho, pagkatapos uuwi tayo. Ako minsan sasabihan ng mga pari, “Bishop, ang ganda ng sinabi n’yo, yung homiliya n’yo.” “Ano ho ang maganda sa sinabi ko?” “Basta maganda!” E ‘di walang nanatili. E ganun naman tayo e. Kaya tuloy, dahil hindi nananatili yung Salita, yung Salita ng Diyos hindi natin ginagamit bilang pamantayan ng buhay. Ilang beses nating naririnig, “Huwag papatay. Pati yung magalit sa kapwa ay pagpatay.” Narinig na natin yun e, pero hindi nananatili. Ilang beses na nating naririnig, “Huwag kang makikiapid.” Naririnig lang! Pero nananatili ba para maging malinis ang puso? Huwag kang magnanakaw, naku! Nananatili ba ‘yan? Pati nga mag-asawa nagdudukutan. Ang anak, dumudukot din sa magulang. Magulang dumudukot dun sa Pondo ng Pinoy. Hindi nananatili yung Salita ni Jesus. At

‘pag hindi nanatili, hiwalay na tayo. Tayo’y mga sanga na nahiwalay at walang bunga. Napakaganda po ng halimbawa ni San Pablo sa Unang Pagbasa. Kahit na sa pagdurusa, nakadikit siya kay Jesus. Hindi siya titigil sa kanyang katapatan kay Jesus at sa kanyang misyon. Inuusig na siya, napapanganib na ang buhay niya, papatayin siya! Siguro tayo, kapag in danger na, para tayong mga sanga na hiwalay kaagad kay Jesus. Pero siya nanatili kahit na nasa panganib. Napakalalim ng kanyang pananalig kay Jesus. Napakalalim ng pag-ibig niya kay Jesus. At ang Salita ni Jesus, talagang nasa kanya. Hindi siya bibitaw. Ganyan din po ang Mahal na Ina. Ang Mahal na Ina, naglagasan ang mga Apostoles, mga sanga na iniwan ang puno nung si Jesus ay dinakip, si Jesus ay ipinako at namatay. Sino ang sanga na hindi humiwalay sa Kanya? Si Maria, ang ina na nagbigay buhay kay Jesus at ang ina na laging kumukuha ng buhay sa kanyang anak na si Jesus. Si Maria na babae ng pananalig! Si Maria na babae ng pag-ibig! Si Maria na naging tapat sa Salita ng Diyos, pinagkatiwala Niya sa atin. Kung tutulad tayo kay Maria, mamumunga tayo ng kapayapaan at ang landas natin sa buhay ay magiging matiwasay. Hindi tayo ilalayo ni Maria sa puno na si Jesus. Kay Maria, kasama sa paglalakbay, ang paglalakbay na ‘yan laging nagmumula kay Jesus, kasama si Jesus, patungo kay Jesus. Paglalakbay na hindi lumalayo kundi paglalakbay na lalong dumidikit kay Jesus. Ganun po si Maria. Ganun po ang ating patrona at modelo para gampanan ang magagandang aral at hamon ng mga pagbasa sa araw na ito. “Manatili kayo sa akin upang kayo’y mamunga ng sagana.” Tumahimik po tayo sandali at palalimin pa sa ating puso ang pagkapit ng Salita ng Diyos na narinig natin. At mangako tayo na hindi hihiwalay kay Jesus.

Nine children were commissioned to proclaim the Word of God as Lectors and Commentators for Children’s Mass every Sunday at 4:00pm during their investiture last May 6, 2012. These children had gone through a series of formation held every Saturday given by our Catechists. It is aimed at strengthening their knowledge about the Scripture, the Holy Eucharist and the special books used during the liturgy. Up to the present, they are under-going spiritual formation even after their investiture to deepen their faith, their relationship with one another and most of all with God, hoping that they will live out what they proclaim and become an inspiration to children like them. Just like what Jesus said in the passage of Luke (18:16), “Let the Children come to me...”

Masayang idinaos ng Barangay Singkamas ang kanilang taunang Barrio Fiesta noong ika-20 ng Mayo 2012. Bago pa man dumating ang mismong araw ng kapistahan, nagsagawa ang mga mamamayan ng naturang barangay ng novena alay sa ating Inang si Maria. Nagbigay ng dagdag na kasiyahan sa mga residente ang pagdating ng isang taong lubos na malapit sa kanila, Si Fr. Mario Didone, ang pangalawang Italyanong KuraParoko ng ating parokya. Naglingkod sa atin si Fr. Mario sa loob ng 15 years na siya namang tumimo sa puso at nagbigay ng lubos na kasiyahan sa mga mamamayan ng Brgy. Singkamas. Sa mismong araw ng kapistahan, sa kapilya ng barangay idinaos ni Fr. Mario ang ika-40 anibersaryo ng kanyang ordinasyon bilang pari. Bago pa lamang dumating sa kapilya si Fr. Mario upang magmisa ay kita at dama na agad ang pagmamahal ng mga tao sa kanya. Sinalubong siya ng isang Drum & Lyre Band bilang pagpupugay at pag-alala sa mga kabutihang nagawa niya sa Brgy. Singkamas. Isa sa mga bagay na ito ay ang pagdiriwang ng misang pangbata tuwing Linggo sa Singkamas Chapel, misa tuwing miyerkules at unang biyernes ng buwan. Tunay ngang naging makabuluhan ang pagdaraos ng kapistahan ng Brgy. Singkamas. Sa tulong rin ng butihing kapitan nito at ng kanyang mga konseho, di maitatangging puno ng saya ang mga puso ng bawat mamamayan. Ang mga kagaya nila na lubos ang pagmamahal sa komunidad ang siyang nagbibigay kulay sa isang pamayanan. Dagdagan pa ng isang pari na buo ang suporta at malasakit sa kanila. Naging inspirasyon si Fr. Mario sa marami. Ang kanyang pagmamahal ang nagtatak sa puso ng bawat isa. Isang halimbawa ng pagmamahal ni Kristo sa atin. Isang pagmamahal na kailanma’y di maaalis sa puso’t diwa ng mga taong minsa’y napaligaya nito. Isang pagmamahal na gagabay sa atin sa landas tungo kay Kristo. Kasama ang ating pinakamamahal na Kura ParokoFr. Gabby Garcia, sama-sama tayong maglalakbay. Sa kabila ng mga pagsubok, sa kabila ng luha at saya. Isang paglalakbay tungo sa mundong puno ng ligaya at pagmamahal sa ating kapwa. Hindi lang sa mga laro at salusalo ang tunay na kahulugan ng kapistahan ng barangay. Ito ay ang pagmamahal na ipinapakita natin at ipinadadama sa bawat isa.

GIFTED: Gabay sa Paglalakbay ng Kabataan ni James Sombilon

Nagdaan na ang pagtatapos ng mga kabataan sa elementarya taong 2011-2012. At isang panibagong landas ang kanilang tatahakin sa sekondarya, sa mataas na paaralan. Nagsagawa ang Brgy. Singkamas Council, sa tulong ng Formation Ministry ng isang three hour seminar mula ika-14 hanggang ika-18 ng Mayo na pinamagatang Gifted. Ang Gifted ay naglalayon na ipabatid sa mga kabataan ang daan na maaari nilang tahakin sa pagpasok nila sa High School. Ito ay naglalaman ng mga paksang magpapalawak ng kanilang pang-unawa at makapagbibigay ng importansya sa Love of God, Independence, Family, Expectations at Decision Making. Sa tulong nina Bro. Henry Angupa, Mrs. Annalyn Abian-Comaling at Mrs. Gege Comaling, mas napaintindi at naipaunawa sa mga bata ang mga pagsubok na kahaharapin nila at ang mga bagay na makakatulong sa kanila upang malampasan ito. Lubos na pinaghandaan ito at naging maganda at makabuluhan ang nasabing gawain. Dito rin natulungan ang mga bata sa kanilang mga personal na problema. Naging bukas ang puso ng bawat isa na matuto at maging handa. Hindi pa rito nagtatapos ang kanilang paglalakbay. Ito ay umpisa pa lamang ng kanilang mahirap na daan – daan na maraming balakid at pagsubok. Ngunit ano ang makahahadlang sa’yo kung sa tabi mo’y naroroon si Kristo? Ngayon ay mas naramdaman na nila ang pagmamahal ng Diyos sa kanila. Ang mga tuwa at luha nila’y sumisimbolo ng pagtanggap. Pagtanggap hindi lang sa mga kamalian ngunit pagtanggap sa isang panibagong kaibigan – si Kristo. Isangkaibigang laging nasa tabi nila sa oras ng pagsubok na kailanma’y di sila iiwan at laging gagabay hanggang sa wakas ng kanilang paglalakbay.

“Summer Saya Alay kay Maria” by Aileen Sacdalan

The VOLCAT members organized a summer activity for children 6 to 13 years of age. The activity called “Summer Saya, Alay kay Maria” consisted of a sports fest and art workshops. The sports fest which lasted from April 25 to May 5, 2012 included basketball and volleyball. The workshops which started on May 5 offered sessions on Arts & Craft, Painting, Singing, Dancing and Acting. The summer activity aimed to help the children discover and enhance their various talents and to grow in their love for Mama Mary and their own mothers. It also aimed to encourage children to regularly attend the “Children's Mass” every Sunday. Children from different streets in the parish enthusiastically participated in the summer “saya.” They cooperated well with the VOLCAT members who very graciously shared their time and talent in teaching the children. Workshops were held every Saturday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The culmination of the activity was held last June 2, 2012 after the 6:00 pm Mass. All the things the children learned in their workshops were put into good use. The costumes for the play were the work of the children in the arts & craft and painting sessions. Children who attended the singing and dancing workshops presented numbers that showed their talents. The script of the play was written by Ms. Rachel Ganzon. All in all, catechesis became more fun with sports and art.

The Week that Changed the World VHMSalles

Every year, throughout the world, Holy Mother Church celebrates in a special way, the redeeming sacrifice of Jesus – his passion, death, and resurrection. This special week is termed as “holy week” or “mga mahal na araw.” Holy week begins with the celebration of Jesus’ triumphant entry to Jerusalem during Palm Sunday, when people waved palm branches and acclaimed “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” This is recalled at the beginning of the liturgy during the celebration of Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, where parishioners have their palm branches blessed and waved as a symbol of their welcome of Jesus’ presence in their own lives. The first three days after Palm Sunday prepare the faithful for the days of Christ’s “saving Passion and glorious resurrection, by which the pride of the ancient foe is vanquished.” (cf. Preface II of the Passion of the Lord, Editio Typica Tertia). In our parish, various spiritual exercises were done to emphasize the spirituality of Holy Week in relation to our personal lives. The Parish Youth Ministry organized a reenactment of the Passion and Death of our Lord Jesus Christ entitled “Kordero ng Diyos” on Holy Monday. They attempted to connect the Jewish Passover Ceremony of sacrificing an unblemished lamb to the Sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross, the

“Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the word.” On Holy Tuesday, our Parish organized the traditional Kumpisalang Bayan. This administration of the Sacrament of Penance was well-attended and became a source of love and forgiveness from Jesus, the Divine Mercy. The parish-wide praying of the Stations of the Cross was held on Holy Wednesday. Parishioners followed Jesus’ Passion and Death on foot through the different streets of La Paz. The second half of Holy Week is called the “Easter Triduum.” This is the shortest, but the most important season of the liturgical year. On Holy Thursday we commemorate the institution of the Sacrament of Holy Orders and the Holy Eucharist. During the morning of Holy Thursday, priests gather together with their bishop and renew their commitment to the priesthood. This is called the “Chrism Mass” because the bishop blesses oils of chrism and oils for the sick for the administration of the Sacraments. At the evening of Holy Thursday is the celebration of the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. This celebration formally opens the Easter Triduum and recalls the institution of the Most Holy Eucharist during Last Supper. After this Mass, the Blessed Sacrament

is solemnly transferred to an altar of reposition to represent Christ’s arrest after his meal with his apostles. On Good Friday, we commemorate the Passion and Death of the Lord through a Liturgy. The Universal Church does not celebrate Mass this day to focus the faithful’s attention to the saving sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Our parish held a traditional procession after the Liturgy. This year,

Ginanap ito sa plaza ng ating simbahan pagkatapos ng Misa sa gabi. Nagsimula ang “Kordero ng Diyos” sa eksena kung saan isang pamilya ang nagsasalu-salo sa Hapunang Pampaskuwa. Kasabay ng eksena ay binabasa naman ng narrator ang Exodo 12:1-3, 5-14 kung saan ipinag-utos ni Yahweh ang pagdiriwang ng Hapunang Pampaskuwa. Sumunod dito ang pagtatanghal ng Huling Hapunan ni Jesus kasama ang Kanyang mga alagad, at ng mga paghihirap ni Jesus hanggang sa kamatayan Niya. Nais ipakita rito ang pagkaka-ugnay-ugnay ng Hapunang Pampaskuwa sa Lumang Tipan, ang Hapunang Pampaskuwa nila Jesus na naging Huling Hapunan nila, at ang pagkamatay ni Jesus sa krus. Ang mga ito ay tumuturo kay Jesus bilang Kordero ng Diyos. Labis ang pasasalamat ng Parish Youth Committee sa lahat ng mga kabataan at mga youth organization na nakiisa sa pagsasa-entablado ng “Kordero ng Diyos”, pati na rin sa lahat ng nagpaabot ng kanilang tulong sa anumang paraan, sa ating PPC, kay Ate Krizzie Syfu na tumulong sa pagdidirek, at sa lahat ng nanood. PANIMULA. Ang Hapunang Pampaskuwa ang naging unang eksena ng “Kordero ng Diyos”. Sa Hapunang Pampaskuwa ng mga Hudyo, pinagsasaluhan ang kordero at inaalala ang pagliligtas ni Yahweh sa mga Israelita. ANG UNANG MISA. Ang ikalawang eksena ay ang Huling Hapunan, ang unang Misa

Sa eksena ng kamatayan ni Jesus ay binasa ang Jn 1:29 (“Narito ang Kordero ng Diyos...”). Sa pagaalay ni Jesus nakaturo ang lahat ng mga pag-aalay sa Lumang Tipan. Naisasa-ngayon naman ang pagaalay na ito sa Banal na Misa.

Ang Kordero sa Lumang Tipan Sa Bibliya ay maraming eksenang may kinalaman sa kordero o tupa. Sa Genesis, matatandaang dahil sa inggit ni Cain kay Abel ay pinatay niya ito. Nasiyahan kasi si Yahweh sa inalay ni Abel na isa sa mga panganay ng kanyang mga tupa. Samantala, hindi kinalugdan si Cain at ang kanyang alay na inani sa bukid. Hindi ito dahil higit na naiibigan ng Diyos ang handog na tupa kaysa mga prutas at gulay. Kinalugdan ng Diyos si Abel dahil nag-alay siya mula sa pinakamainam sa kanyang kawan – mula sa mga panganay. Sa kwento naman ng pagsasakripisyo ni Abraham ng kanyang anak na si Isaac, isang tupa ang ipinalit ni Abraham kay Isaac matapos siyang pigilan ng Diyos na patayin ang anak niya. Ang lugar kung saan ito naganap ay tinawag na “Si Yahweh ang Magkakaloob”. Ang lugar na ito, ayon sa Bibliya ay tinatawag sa gayong pangalan “magpahanggang ngayon” (tingnan ang Gen 22:1-19). Kakatuwang isipin na tinawag pa rin itong “Si Yahweh ang Magkakaloob” kahit pa nagkaloob na ng tupa ang Diyos bilang alay na pamalit kay Isaac. Tila nagpapahiwatig ito na ang Diyos ay magbibigay pa ng kordero. Darating pa lang ang Kordero ng Diyos. Tampok din ang kordero sa kwento ng paglaya ng mga Israelita mula sa Ehipto. Ayon nga sa pagbasa mula sa Exodo na itinampok sa “Kordero ng Diyos”, iniutos ni Yahweh ang pagkain ng kordero (Hapunang Pampaskuwa) at pagpahid ng dugo nito sa mga pintuan ng bawat sambahayang Israelita. Ang dugo ng Kordero ang naging palatandaan ng tirahan ng mga Israelita at sa pamamagitan nito ay nailigtas sila sa huling salot na ipinadala ni Yahweh sa Ehipto – ang kamatayan ng lahat ng mga panganay. Sa araw ring iyon nakamtam ng mga Israelita ang kalayaan mula sa pagka-alipin. Kordero o tupa din naman ang hiningi ni Yahweh bilang pang-araw-araw na handog mula sa bayan ng Israel (tingnan ang Ex 29:38-42 at Bilang 28:18). Ito ay ang “tamid” na inaalay dalawang beses arawaraw sa Toldang Tipanan at nang lumao’y sa Templo. Bukod sa mga nabanggit, marami pang halimbawa ng imahe ng kordero sa Bibliya.

Parish Activities A Feast of the Eucharist:

Corpus Christi Sunday “Hoc facite in meam commemorationem.” (Do this in memory of me.) These were the very words of Jesus during the Last Supper, the night before he died. He told his apostles, who were the first priests, to perpetuate his memory by daily offering to the Father His Body and Blood. The Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, which we celebrated last June 10, was meant to remind us that what we do during the Holy Mass is ordinary yet extraordinary. What does this mean? In the Holy Mass, we use ordinary species of bread and wine – food readily available at our disposal. Yet this ordinary species, when consecrated, become the Body and Blood of Jesus. Something extraordinary happens during the celebration of the Mass, the bread and wine are not just symbols of Christ’s Body and Blood, but a Living Reality – Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity – a mystery! On the eve of this Solemnity, Fr. Gabby led a Holy Hour in honor of Jesus, truly present in the Holy Eucharist. This solemnity also marked the beginning of the gradual implementation of the third edition of the English Roman Missal. The priest says, “The Lord be with you.” We respond, “And with your spirit.”

Love, Flowers & Prayers During the whole month of May, different ministries and organizations of the Parish sponsored the daily floral offering to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The popular song that comes to mind when referring to Flores de Mayo is this: Araw-araw kay Maria, Kami ay nagdarasal Si Mariang Ina namin, Ibig naming marangal Kanyang tulong lagi-lagi, Kami ay humihiling Siya’y aming pupurihin, Tuwing araw at gabi Kung kami’y nasa panganib, Kay Maria tatakbo Siya’y aming tatawagin, Kung lalapit ang tukso O, Maria tutulungan, Kaming nangabubuhay Kami ay ipanalangin, Kung kami’y mamamatay Reflecting on this traditional Filipino custom, we can say that Filipinos are truly a Marian people. Filipinos give flowers to the ones they love as a sign of their love and tribute. Flowers are representations of beauty and splendor. When we offer flowers to Mary, we whisper a quick prayer to her. By this act of love, we are hoping that she, who is the allpowerful intercessor in heaven, will hear our prayers. When we give tribute to the Mother of God, the honor given to Jesus Christ is doubled – To Jesus, through Mary (Ad Iesum, per Mariam).

Parish Activities

Healthcare A lecture on Human Theology and on HIV was held at the St. Camillus Pastoral Center in Quezon City on April 4. It was a whole day seminar where members of the La Paz Youth Choir, Health Volunteers, and Altar Servers from the Parish for a total of 23 participants attended. Fr. Dan Cancino and Rev. John Paul Alvarado of the Camillians jointly animated the seminar. Participants came home with much to munch and to share. Having received a positive response from the first group who attended the HIV Seminar in Quezon City last April 4, the Parish Pastoral Council, Finance Council, and all heads of organizations invited Fr. Dan, Camillian Brothers, and other HIV Volunteers to conduct a similar seminar for them on April 14. This time, the Parish hosted the said lecture forum at the 2nd Floor of the Parish Office. Some 26 enthused and informed participants suited up for that whole day activity.

A huge fire struck a portion of the Parish situated at Barangay Singkamas on May 23. Some 150 families were left homeless after the fire was contained. Immediately the Parish responded upon the initiative of Parish Volunteers and the Health Ministry by packing and distributing food, medicines, and used clothes for the victims.

Feast in Mary’s Presence As an alternative activity to culminate the Flores de Mayo, the Worship Ministry organized a Marian Festival instead of a traditional Santacruzan. This Marian Festival became a celebration of God’s graciousness to us through the Blessed Mother. It featured several fun activities and games sponsored by different ministries. Young people and their parents alike flocked to the different booths as they all became like little children to play games. The night was specially graced by the presence of a former pastor of the Parish, Fr. Mario Didone, M.I. He served La Paz for almost 15 years and decided to celebrate his 40th Presbyterial Ordination in his “second home”. The Marian Festival became a venue for bonding and joyful camaraderie with the Blessed Virgin Mary, the model of generous service.

Pray for Priests! The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is also the day of prayer for the sanctification of priests. The Archdiocese of Manila requested all parishes to hold Holy Hours for the intention of the clergy’s sanctification. Our Parish held novena masses in preparation for the solemnity from June 6 to June 14. On the day of the Solemnity, a solemn mass was held at 6:00PM, followed by a Holy Hour with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

Sa panahon natin ngayon, untiunting nababawasan ang kagandahan ng ating kalikasan. Nararapat lang natin itong alagaan sapagkat ito'y ipininagkatiwala ng Panginoon sa ating mga kamay. Kaya nagsagawa ang Ecology Ministry ng ating Parokya ng isang proyekton g "Tree Planting" na pinangunahan ng ating butihing Kura Paroko na si Fr. Gabriel V. Garcia, M.I. at ng mga miyembro ng Parish Pastoral Council (PPC). Kasama din sa proyektong ito ang mga mag aaral ng Philippine Women's Universitiy (PWU). Ito ay isinagawa noong ika-30 ng Hunyo 2012 sa lugar ng San Mateo, Rizal. Ang grupo ay nakapagtanim ng halos 100 puno ng "Eucaliptus". Nawa'y ito ang maging magandang simula para muli nating pangalagaan ang ating Inang Kalikasan.

"Ating mahalin at pagandahin ang Kalikasan"

Perhaps, one of the most challenging new responses in the Holy Mass is the “and with your spirit.” All Englishspeaking Catholics are used to responding “and also with you” since the 1970s. The former translation is loose, not faithful to the Latin text “et cum spiritu tuo.” Other languages, including French, Spanish, and Italian (Et avec votre esprit, Y con tu espiritu, E con il tuo spirito), have translated it properly from the original Latin text. 1 “And with your spirit” appears only in Christian writings. It already forms part of greetings at the end of some of the letters of St. Paul: “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit brethren. Amen” (Galatians 6:18; Philippians 4:23; Philemon 25); “The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you” (2 Tim 4:22).1 St. John Chrysostom, Doctor of the Church, says in one of his homilies: ‘And with your spirit’ is addressed to the priest by the congregation according to the regulations found in the Church from the beginning. The reason for it being that when the conduct of the priest is good it is a gain for the whole body of the Church, and when the conduct of the priest is unholy it is a loss to all. All of them pray that through peace the grace of the Holy Spirit may be accorded to him, so that he may strive to perform his service to the public suitably.” 2 This Doctor of the Church argues in favor of the developing Christian understanding of the Eucharistic liturgy as Christ’s Sacrifice and of the significance of the Sacrament of Holy Orders. He continues, “If there was no Holy Spirit there would be no shepherds or teachers in the Church, for these also come through the

Reflection Spirit. By this reply you are also reminded that he who is there does nothing, and that the right offering of the gifts is not a work of human nature, but that the mystic sacrifice is brought about by the grace of the Holy Spirit and his hovering over all. For he who is there is a man, it is God who works though him. Do not attend to the nature of the one you see, but understand the grace which is invisible. Nothing human takes place in this sacred sanctuary. If the spirit was not present there would be no Church assisting, but if the Church stands round it is clear that the Spirit is present.” 2 On the one hand, some argue in favor of the Linguistics, the Hebrew view of “spirit” as simply being the person, “you”.

essence. But, biblical basis is not the best approach in every case in translating texts used in the liturgy, even one with roots in Scripture. 2 Tradition attests that the meaning of “et cum spiritu tuo”, through some of the explanations of Church Fathers (including St. John Chrysostom), is “spiritus” that 1 distinguishes the ordained from the laity. When the people say “and with your spirit”, they recognize the special role the ordained has in the sacred action. This is not an exaltation of the clergy. Spiritus is that characteristic which marks certain men for ministry in the interest of the whole Body of Christ, the Church. 1

Fr. Anscar Chupungco, OSB, in his primer, maintains that ‘and with your spirit’ “is an ancient Greek and Roman formula of replying respectfully to a greeting. ‘Spirit’ here represents what is noblest in a person and it is to this that the greeting is returned. It is similar to our honorific addresses, like Your Reverence, Your Excellency, Your Honor, and so on. However, it is not the same as these, because spirit is not an honorific title but the innermost possession of a person.”

There seems to be a conflict in the two interpretations of “et cum spiritu tuo.” But looking closely, we find that the two interpretations complement each other; and that they can be used to enrich the people’s understanding of what they are saying.

He says, contrary to St John of Chrysostom, that “the word ‘spirit’ does not refer to the person of the Holy Spirit. The origin of this formula does not in any way allow us to do so. In fact, both Latin and English do not use the capital letter. Neither does the word mean “priestly spirit”, because even the deacon, who does not yet possess the “priestly spirit”, receives this reply when he greets the assembly.” 3

We, the laity, must know that when we respond “and with your spirit”, say something profound about the will of Christ in his Church – that his design was to ordain men to teach, govern, sanctify, and serve the Church. 2

This, according to Fr. John Zuhlsdorf, an American Priest who is an advocate of the reverent celebration of the Holy Mass, may be suspected as a “horizontal” kind of theology, emphasizing the “Liturgy” only as a “meal”, and the “Eucharist” as “thanksgiving”, and perhaps a less sharp discernment of the difference of the roles of the ordained and the laity. The dynamic translation of “et cum spiritu tuo” to “and also with you” is indeed correct in terms of biblical approach to Latin. “Spiritus” has its roots in Greek “psyche”, or bodily life force, and Hebrew “nephesh”, or life

Bishops, priests, and deacons, when hearing “and with your spirit” must be challenged to be more humble and more zealous in serving the congregation. 2

Finally, the dialogue between the priest and the congregation, with Christ at the center, must bring us to a deeper understanding of our complementary roles in the Liturgy – the ministerial priesthood (bishops, priests, and deacons) and the common priesthood (laity). Service to God by Aileen Sacdalan

“Service is the pathway to real significance. It is through ministry that we discover the meaning of our lives” You may be wondering about those of us doing service in the church and the community... Where do we get the time and energy to do the task that we have to do? Why are we doing it? What do we get from it? Don't we have other things to do? My friend, we do! Lots of us are working mothers and fathers. We have children to attend to and care for, problems and difficulties to resolve, loads of things in our minds, and work to be done at home and office. But being into religious service is a state of grace God has bestowed on those who serve Him. Food feeds the body, learning feeds the mind but service to people feeds the soul. Knowing that I have been of help even in my own little ways fills me with sublime emotion and substance. There is inner joy and peace that soothe my spirit. There is no feeling of emptiness in doing service to God. The dream that one day I will face God and that He will look at me with a smile and not with disappointment is what I live for. This keeps me going and energized to encourage more to join us in serving God. It truly is a wonderful, wonderful feeling. True, it is tiring, it is taxing but as I certainly, there is joy in service. We must never fear fatigue while serving God for we can never do enough for Him. And when God is in our life He leads. Letting the calendar years just pass us by doing nothing significant in the eyes of God, living only for what this world can offer us, focusing more on success and power is a lonely life. We may be surrounded by wealth but the pleasure is short-lived. God created us for a reason and purpose and it is up to us to find out what it is. Living with a purpose is the only way to really live. Everything else just exists. And for those of us who are already in service let us be vigilant, let us be constant. Let us pray to God that we may not fall into spiritual aridity. Let us mind our duties, not what others are doing. Let us not compare, criticize or compete with other ministries. Let us keep ourselves busy doing the work God has given us and let us think of our ministry as an opportunity and not an obligation so that we may all grow in spiritual maturity.

New English Roman Missal Embracing Change in the Liturgy Why does the Church change the Liturgy? In its Liturgy, the Church always attempts to follow the “norm of the holy Fathers.” Th is eff ort “requires not only the preservation of what our immediate forebears have handed on to us, but also an understanding and a more profound pondering of the Church’s entire past. . . . this broader view allows us to see how the Holy Spirit endows the People of God with a marvelous fi delity in preserving the unalterable deposit of faith, even though there is a very great variety of prayers and rites” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, no. 9). Th e Liturgy must, therefore, always celebrate and make present the Paschal Sacrifi ce of Christ—his saving Passion, death, Resurrection, and Ascension. However, over time, it may become necessary to make certain changes, such as adding prayers for recently canonized saints and adding texts that refl ect the needs that the People of God wish to bring to God in prayer. Th e third edition of the Roman Missal makes such additions and provides a fresh translation of the Latin texts of the existing content of the Missal. Who decides that the Liturgy should change? Pope John Paul II approved the promulgation of the third edition of the Missale Romanum, the Latin text, on April 20, 2000. Th e fi nal Latin edition of the revised text was published in March 2002. The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments was responsible for preparing the text. Th e Congregation is the Vatican office that the pope has charged with overseeing all matters related to the Liturgy and the sacraments. Any changes in the words of the sacramental formulas—the essential words in the celebration of each of the sacraments (either in Latin or in vernacular translations)—must be pproved by the Holy Father personally. In addition, church law also gives to conferences of bishops (such as the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) as well as individual bishops certain responsibilities with regard to the Liturgy.

What exactly is changing? Th e structure of the Mass (the order of the elements, the actions of the priest celebrant, and so forth) remains unchanged in the new edition of the Roman Missal. However, the translation of the prayer texts will change to more closely refl ect the original Latin texts. St. Camillus 400 A Tale of Two Gamblers Camillus de Lellis stood six feet tall, like a basketball champ. He was robust and exceptionally strong. When he was born on May 25, 1550, in Bucchianico, Italy, his father, Giovanni, saw that his boy "was almost big enough to be sent to school." But the son ended up a dropout. Barely had he learned to read and write when he gave himself over to playing cards and throwing dice. Camillus' wild boyhood peaked into a mercenary soldier's life in his twenties. By then he was stuck deep in his vice, gambling and losing everything except his essential garments. Eventually, he found himself reduced to a beggar, limping around with a nasty sore in his right foot. He landed a job as construction worker at the Capuchin monastery in Manfredonia, Italy. There, his natural goodness re-surfaced. In time, a Gambler par excellence engaged him in a different game. On February 2, 1575, He threw a die that knocked Camillus down on his knees, sobbing over his sinfulness and pleading for forgiveness. Camillus felt he would rather be torn to smithereens than sin again. God gambled further with the repentant addict. Wagering on his passionate character, inherent nobility, risk-taking energy and strong physique, God entrusted to him the "precious jewel of charity." With this love, Camillus plunged himself totally to the care of the sick and the dying. Still afflicted by his wound, he went to St. James' Hospital in Rome, ready to stake his life for his new passion: to be Jesus to the sick and to serve Jesus in the sick. As before, he was dead set on winning.

Page 24 Never did Camillus' mother, Camilla Compelli de Laureto, imagine her son founding a religious congregation. Until her death, when Camillus was 13, she sorrowed over a dream that showed her son with a red cross on his chest leading other men with similar crosses. She thought her son was destined to lead a pack of criminals and the cross, the mark of those sentenced to die in the gallows, foretold his end. But God had other dreams and thoughts. He teamed up with Camilla's son and led him to sainthood. Camillus was canonized in 1746 by Pope Benedict XIV who attributed to him the foundation of a "new school of charity." Later he was declared patron saint of the sick, healthcare practitioners and hospitals. Evidently, God and Camillus became a winning combination. Their winnings: The Order of the Ministers of the Infirm now present in 33 countries across six continents and providing leadership in healthcare that is powered by a "new school of charity."

The HEART of SAINT CAMILLUS DE LELLIS will be visiting the PHILIPPINES from February 17 until March 2013.

Camillus assembled men of similar passion. He led them in caring for the sick even to the point of mortal danger, as when they aided the plague victims in Rome. At age 32, he took up studies for the priesthood and at 34 got ordained. Two years later, on March 18, 1586, he and his companions received official confirmation and recognition as the Congregation of the Ministers of the Sick.
