Our town doesn’t need reinvention: businessman tells Chamber of Commerce

NAMBOUR may have seen better days but it didn’t need saving, according to a local businessman who says people were inclined to take the town’s strengths for granted.

Day and Grimes Real Estate agent Ian Black told the Nambour Chamber of Commerce AGM (November 25) that Nambour was still the centre of the Sunshine Coast hinterland and had plenty going for it.

“One of the things that is striking, at the moment, is the trend to try to come up with new ideas to reinvent Nambour. Funnily enough, I think Nambour doesn’t need reinvention. It will reinvent itself in time. What we need to focus on is what Nambour does now, and does well. And that is to provide services to the hinterland.”

Mr Black said people who drove up Currie Street — with more than its fair share of empty shops — might get the wrong impression of Nambour. “That (empty Currie St shops) is an issue that is sadly going to be with us for a long time as Nambour transitions,” he said.

Despite this Mr Black said Nambour’s redeeming strength was as a business centre for people of the hinterland.

“If we can let people know that you can park in the CBD, once, and you can do your grocery shopping. You can go to do the banking. You can go to a doctor. You can go to the chemist and you can do any number of services and access any number of facilities purely and simply after parking just once. You can not do that anywhere else on the Sunshine Coast.”

Mr Black said while it was not the commercial metropolis that it used to be Nambour had many overarching strengths. “We are like the parents that gave birth to the Coast and now, like most families, the kids are doing better than the parents. And that’s what’s happened to the Coast and that’s why everything’s now hap-

“But we have a role to play and we are very importantly positioned to take a lot of people who, if Nambour wasn’t here, would have to drive to Maroochydore to do everything they need to do. And thank heavens, from Maroochydore’s perspective, we are here and we take that load.”

Time to move forward

Chamber of Commerce President Mark Bray agreed. “You make a good point,” he said.

“Sometimes Nambour gets caught up in its history, because it was the centre of the Sunshine Coast back in the day. In my view we’ve got to move on while certainly acknowledging the past and while not in any way downplaying its importance. Meanwhile Div 10 Cr David Law saw the long-promised rail duplication to Nambour as crucial to the town’s future. But he said he’d been waiting 20 years for it to happen and it was up to the community to put pressure on both levels of government to keep the issue at the forefront of politician’s minds.

“I would encourage you to hold the relevant politicians to account and for all of us to make a lot of noise to get rail duplication to Nambour,” he said. ”I do that each time I see either federal or state representatives.

Cr David Law. “It is such a ready-to-go project and it’s not happening because of politics and we’re being let down by that.”

Cr Law said Nambour needed to continue the work that was already happening to activate the CBD such as Reimagine Nambour, the Special Entertainment Precinct and the Tram Project.

“Many people are coming to live here, many families, and we need to preserve this community and I’ll do everything I can to help.

“The question is how we get those people coming to Nambour for things that they might go elsewhere for.”

Cr Law said Nambour’s Special Entertainment Precinct status would help create local opportunities for cafes, restaurants and entertainment. “A whole bunch of people are working really hard on trying to achieve the entertainment side of that.”

Cr Law said business activity like that seen at Sunshine Coast Pinball, La Salsa De Vida Mexican restaurant, Arden Dawn, Beach House Hotel & Mort’s Brewery, Stalwart Alehouse and Brewery, Down Town and many others.

“There’s a lot of people who are in hospitality and entertainment who, in spite of COVID, have been brave enough to open their doors. They’re hanging in there and they’re doing well, and we need to do all we can to help and support them to do more.”

INSPIRED by comments made at the Nambour Chamber of Commerce meeting, The Gazette posed the question to readers and this was your response.

Reimagine Nambour Ambassador Rhonda Billett from Uptown Hair Studio said Nambour was a fabulous area of the Sunshine Coast “where the landscape is nothing but lush and green”. “A town full of fun community vibes, people supporting their “local” along with loads of smiles and hand waves along the way. To me, Nambour is beautiful & Nambour is Home.”

Keyline Realty Business Coordinator Mark Dunlop heaped praise on Nambour. “Where else can you find a community that has so much heart and community spirit on the Sunshine Coast? This town has been through a lot together in the past 18 months and is still looking after each after through it all. People can say what they want about Nambour, but where else is so original, unique and down-toearth as our great town?”

Sande Bamford from the Sanctuary Park Church of Christ Op Shop said Nambour was full of amazing people who just want to get out there and help others. “Last week a lady took advantage of our blessing hampers for a young woman who had just got into community housing, but had virtually nothing in the way of kitchen ware or bed linen. The lady who came in and wanted nothing for herself. She just wanted to be able to give to someone else who had a need. We were blessed to meet her.”

Nambour was a bit like a “middle child” said resident Kevin McAney. “It seems to sit between the new kid Noosa and the mature, corporate Maroochydore. It has history and character and has been left to get on with it by its parents the Council as it should be mature enough to find it’s own way. But it has struggled. It has needed some support, guidance and some investment which it is finally getting. The ‘Heart of The Hinterland’ is still beating strongly, and

is responding well to treatment. A haircut and new clothes will bring it back with a swagger as long as it gets some self-belief.”

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton said Nambour has been the centre of his electorate since it was formed in 1986. “And while the town has had it’s ups and downs, I can confidently say Nambour’s best days are ahead of it,” he said.

Mr Skelton said Nambour had so much to look forward to over the next few years, including: • The Special Entertainment Precinct status coming into effect, ushering in a new age of live music and entertainment for the Nambour CBD, supported by the State Government and Council.

• The B2N project will increase train frequency and game changing upgrades to the Bruce Highway reducing congestion on the daily commute and making it easier for tourists to find their way to Nambour, jointly funded by State and Federal Governments.

• The Nambour Pool splash zone is nearing completion, adding more options to beat the heat this summer, jointly funded by the State Government, Council and Belgravia Leasure.

• The Police station is also nearing completion, providing extra room for growth to keep our communities safe, as the region welcomes new residents.

• The Hospital redevelopment continues to provide greater access to better treatment for local residents.

• The 2032 Brisbane Olympics will be coming to Nambour, with the State government naming Parklands Conservation Park as the site for the Mountain Biking events.

“But by far the best thing about Nambour is the people, who are some of the most kind, caring and compassionate people I have had the pleasure of representing. Each and every day I’m blown away by the lengths Nambourians will go to help each other out. Nambour isn’t just good, it’s bloody brilliant, a shining example of community on the Sunshine Coast.”

As a resident of Nambour for over 50 years

Judith MacKenzie said Nambour had a lot going for it. “Start with close proximity to City, surf and university,” she said. “We have the bus rail exchange and the main north south rail lines running through the town.

“Education facilities include 2 State Primary Schools, 2 State High Schools, a Catholic College, Nambour Christian College and a TAFE college.

“A number of churches both large and small allow freedom of worship.

“Nambour has a modern, well-stocked library offering a range of various activities.

“Health is supported by high standard hospitals both public and private with a number of specialist centres and pathology readily accessible.

“Cultural activities are not over looked and Nambour’s Lind Lane Theatre has hosted some talented performers bringing a high standard of live theatre to the public. Not to be forgotten a picture theatre with several cinemas.

Numerous art and craft groups meet regularly.

“A wide variety of culinary tastes are catered to with quality clubs and pubs and numerous dine in and take away outlets. The proliferation of coffee shops, allowing for outdoor dining make this a pleasant place to meet and greet friends.

“New estates are being built out rapidly indicating that Nambour is a desirable place to live.

Nambour is a friendly and progressive community.”

Beverley McMullin from Palmwoods Community and Business Association said that, as the hinterland’s major shopping and services district, it was wonderful to see the progress taking place in Nambour resulting from an “enthusiastic and passionate community”.

“Your commitment and vision is inspiring. Well done Nambour!” she said.

Cathy Ewald loved that Nambour encouraged artistic and creative types. “The Old Ambo has amazing exhibitions and performances and a monthly Long Table Dinner.”

In that time Desley Goggin, who retired last week, was aware of the sensitive role she played being the first and last face often seriously ill people would see as they visited their doctor.

“You have to be very careful,” she said. “You have to be very aware that people are ill and treat them with understanding, respect and kindness at all times. You don’t know what they’re going through.”

Desley paid tribute to the positive work environment at the Nambour clinic.

“I loved working here,” she said. “You don’t last 35 years in a place that isn’t wonderful.

The patients are lovely. And we are all treated equally here. We all had our own jobs and our own areas of responsibility and the doctors respect the staff.

“My work certainly provided me with lots of personal growth and skills I might not have had otherwise. It’s given me a sense of identity and of belonging, of being part of a team.”

Desley said she had witnessed many changes over the years. “We’ve gone from cards to computers. Medicare used to be manual. Now it’s all done online. Doctors use computers for prescriptions, referrals and notes.”

And since Covid she’s seen screens, masks and social distancing precautions become the norm.

“People have certainly became more tense lately, understandably, but our patients are generally lovely.”

Dr Sebastian Lambooy said Desley had been a wonderful person to have in the clinic.

“She has seen a lot of technology changes but has managed to stay focused on what matters most: the patient. To present to your doctors’ office and be greeted with a smile by someone who acknowledges you as a person is critical.

“Desley personifies this. Respect and integrity. The patients and all of us here at the Nambour clinic will miss her and wish her and John her husband a great retirement.”

Trees of Hope targets eight tons of Christmas kindness THE goal is to hand out a remarkable eight tons of groceries for needy and homeless individuals and families for Christmas.

They have collected a couple of tons in about a month so far, and the December 17 deadline is looming. But Trees of Hope charity drive organiser Imogene Dowler from The Shack Nambour says the traditional rush is yet to come as people become increasingly generous as Christmas approaches.

“It’s going to be a wild ride from here to the December 17th cut-off date that’s for sure,” said Imogene. “There’s still plenty of time to donate and the need is greater this year. More people and organisations are reaching out to us.

“But we’re also finding people are more generous than usual. It’s been crazy and it’s been amazing how many people have given so far.

“Baringa School dropped off 1000 kilograms of food. Sunshine Coast Grammar School Helping Hands provided and packed 80 Back to School packs. Life Centre Church Caloundra have donated 150 kilograms. Heaps of churches

and schools have helped. Nambour Christian College and Nambour State College have been wonderful. We’ve picked up about 150 kgs of hampers from Heritage Branches and the trees have only fairly recently gone up in the branches.”

Imogene said The Shack was careful to work with other organisations to determine true need. “So we try to coordinate with organisations like Suncoast Care and with initiatives like the Salvation Army’s ‘Adopt a Family’ to try and make sure we’re not overlapping and, more importantly, trying to make sure no-one slips through the gaps.” ▶ To take part all you have to do is collect Trees of Hope hamper bags or boxes from Coast Heritage branches, Mitre 10 stores or from The Shack. Then fill them with the items indicated on the list provided and drop them back to the Heritage Bank branches across the Coast, Sunshine Mitre 10 stores or The Shack in Price Street Nambour for collection. You have until December 17 to take part.

Salon celebrates 37 beautiful years

Bakery wins multiple awards

AFTER 37 years in business Jenny K’s Beauty Centre is now welcoming the third generation of clients to be pampered in the Nambour salon.

“I cannot believe that it has been 37 years,” said owner Jenny Kimball. “Honestly the time has absolutely flown and I think that is because I love what I do. I’m not going anywhere.”

Jenny and her husband opened their first Jenny K salon in Moree 40 years ago and their second Salon in Nambour. Twelve months later the couple opened a third Salon in Gympie, followed by a fourth Salon 12 months later in Maroochydore.

“We had planned to move the family up to Queensland after honeymooning on the Sunshine Coast many years before,” Jenny said.

“We chose Nambour and then Gympie because they had such a wonderful country feel about them. Despite the growth in these areas they have retained that feel.”

The Gympie salon was eventually purchased by one of Jenny’s staff and after 18 years the couple wound down the salon in Maroochydore to focus on the Nambour Salon.

“The first Jenny K salon in Nambour was in Queen Street but was relocated a couple of times as we were pushing out the walls as we needed more room,” said Jenny.

“We were not sure how we would go at first moving to Centre Park Arcade but we absolutely love the location. We have been here for 22 years now and it is very convenient,” she said. “There is plenty of parking for our clients and it is also very peaceful.”

For the past 25 years, the couple’s daughter Katrina has worked in the salon alongside her mother. “It is lovely to have the family involved in the business and I think our complimentary strengths combine to create a consistent experience for our clients,” said Jenny.

“Dennis runs the business and that allows me to look after clients which is what I really love to do. Katrina shares my passion and has a very warm and gentle way with our clients”.

Local therapist Kellie Warren, is Jenny K’s most recent addition to the team. “Kellie completes the caring nature and ethos of our business,” said Jenny.

“The entries from all around the country were judged between November the 26th and 28th,” said bakery owner, Jason Walters. “We entered pies in a number of categories and were absolutely blown away by the results.”

Sweet and Flour received a Bronze award for their Plain pie, a Silver award for their Breakie pie, a Bronze award for their Mussaman curry pie, a Silver for their Apple pie and in the Apprentice Category, a Gold award for their Chicken and Vegetable Mornay pie.

As an added bonus, the Apple pie also took third overall place in the country as did the Chicken and Vegetable Mornay pie.

“We were up against some very stiff competition which made this recognition even more special,” Jason said.

Jason has been in the trade for 26 years and proudly remains an ‘old school’ baker. “We make everything onsite, from scratch,” he said.

“There are no shortcuts here.

“I also have a fantastic team working with me.

We are all passionate about our baking and we enjoy using old style recipes as well as innovating with new ingredients and flavours. One of my other bakers has 39 years of experience, and our 3rd year apprentice, SamanthaTranter, is shaping up to be a very talented and dedicated baker”.

So what is the secret to an award winning pie?

“There are lots of elements that have to come together to bake a really outstanding pie,” Jason explained. “Temperature plays a really important role and it is often challenging to control this in our humid climate.

“The pastry baking has to be just right so that the case holds the filling properly so that it doesn’t fall out when you take a bite, and the filling must be tasty as well.

“Samantha refers to it as ‘chasing the dragon’, and I think on this occasion, we probably caught him!”

Uptown Hair takes client consultations to the web UNDETERRED by the challenges of recent lockdowns Uptown Hair Studio’s Rhonda Billett has found a way to take her skills online and reach a wider audience.

In what is probably an Australian-first initiative, Rhonda and her team are delivering hair consultation services on the internet.

“We launched our sister business HairdressersOnline.com.au initially to sell our hair and beauty products during the pandemic, but it has evolved into a little more now with our nationwide Virtual Hair Consultation Services,” said Rhonda “Right now, we have clients as far afield as Sydney and Melbourne and we are covering topics like how to best use the products you already have in your cupboard, embracing your natural hair and the fundamentals of curling and straightening. It is early days, but it has been very well received. We seem to have tapped into a real need.”

Rhonda said that she believed the online aspect of the business allowed for greater availability to people, all done out of the Nambour Hair Studio.

“We are educating people, answering their questions and developing a deeper connection with them despite the distance and as far as I am aware, it is an Australian first,” Rhonda said.

“In terms of where this goes, I guess we have to see how it unfolds. Certainly at the moment, it is ticking the first box. There is most definitely a need and as always, it is our very great pleasure to help the best way we can both in our Nambour studio and online.

“I feel grateful that I found my passion and purpose early in my life,” Rhonda said. “When my dad talked to me about running a business he always told me to question whether there was a need, and whether it was viable. There will always be a need for what we do at Uptown

New junior ropes course at TreeTop Challenge

AUSTRALIA’S largest zipline and high ropes course built specifically for junior adventurers has opened at the TreeTop Challenge at Woombye. The new junior course is spread over 1.2 hectares of rainforest and includes five courses featuring rope bridges, flying foxes, swings and jumps.

The junior course is for kids aged three to nine.

THE Sunshine Chimes is a U3A Sunshine Coast group, meeting on a weekly basis in the Mapleton Hall throughout the year to share music-making, joy, and companionship. Conductor Wendy Turton credits her decades of teaching and Orff Levels training with the Queensland Orff Schulwerk Association (QOSA) with her ability to adapt to teaching and learning hand chimes with adults.

Levels of musicianship vary widely across the group - some players have never read music before, others have taught and performed music - everyone has demonstrated massive musical growth in the year since they first met.

Our chimes are on an 18-month loan from The Handbell Society of Australasia. With a raft of performance requests and enthusiastic new members, the group is hoping to secure a grant/ funding to secure their own chimes, enabling them to ring in many more years.

Bursary Boost for Woombye Op Shop

WOOMBYE Op Shop received a timely boost recently as it gears up for this year’s annual Christmas on the Fields event. It was all thanks to Bendigo Bank Woombye and Woombye State School year six student Abbigail Ballantyne.

Abigail won the branch’s Ray Grace Bursary Award named in honour of the renowned Woombye businessman who was instrumental in pushing for the local bank’s establishment.

Each year the award challenges students to nominate a worthy community group or event and submit an essay explaining why the chosen group should receive $150. Abbigail’s submission was judged the winner and she recently presented the $150 cheque to Woombye Op Shop. ▶ The Op Shop’s Di Parker is organising the annual Christmas on the Fields event which takes place Saturday December 11 from 4pm at Woombye Snakes Football Fields. The event was started by Di and her team as a way to provide entertainment and activities for kids at Christmas.

Palmwoods to have say on safety improvements THE Palmwoods community is being urged to have a say on proposed road safety improvements in the area.

Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has unveiled concept designs for proposed pedestrian safety upgrades at three locations on Margaret Street in response to local concerns.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the proposal included trafficcalming devices, upgrades to existing crossings near the post office and Rick's Garage, and a new crossing near the Palmwoods Bakery.

“TMR carried out investigations into pedestrian-related road safety improvements in recent months, complementing the previous planning undertaken by Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) as part of its Placemaking Palmwoods Master Plan,” Mr Bailey said.

“A range of factors were carefully considered throughout the concept design process to determine the suitability and location of the improvements.

“The proposed changes will give locals and visitors greater connectivity and improve safety through traffic-calming devices, additional

Businesses express mandate concerns SUNSHINE Coast businesses concerned about the effect of vaccine mandates met at NewLife Church and Diablo Oasis, Woombye on Monday to hear a range of speakers discuss the issue.

The ‘Mandate Response Meeting’ organised

by Sunshine Coast Businesses Unite Group who believe that “irrespective of one’s stance on any mandates there should always be mutual respect, kindness and tolerance between people living on the Coast”.

Both venues sold out online. Organisers said about 1100 tickets were sold and a further 728 people watched the zoom broadcast.

Organisers had trouble last week finding a suitable location as several venues seemed reluctant to host the meeting.

The audience heard from Senator Gerard Rennick, Sunshine Coast Councillor Joe Natoli and member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien.

The meeting also heard from lawyers and a lineup of health professionals including doctors, a psychologist, a dentist, a midwife, a nurse and a chiropractor who spoke about their fears

A new social enterprise for Bloomhill Cancer Care, Montville Marketplace is seeking to increase funds to support the growing need of those touched by cancer across the Sunshine Coast.

“We’re thrilled, it’s been a huge few weeks since we found this gem of a site and decided to open the shop in time for the Christmas rush,” Bloomhill Cancer Care Chief Executive Officer Christopher John said.

“We have many ideal gifts and upcycled items here and people are snapping them up, every dollar helping support those touched by cancer.

Montville Marketplace made more than twice the average daily takings in our op shops on its first full day of trade, which is amazing considering we’re still signing up suppliers.”

The new shop is a curated space for local artisan’s wares, with Bloomhill staff and volunteers selling goods on behalf of local makers under commission agreements. The store is seeking more suppliers to join while Christmas gifting is at the forefront of the community’s mind.

Bloomhill Retail Network Lead Russell Lindsay said he was “really trepidatious” about the opening of this social enterprise, but needn’t have been.

“Almost immediately when we opened we had people say, ‘I want to be part of it’ – as volunteers, and as suppliers - which is great because we have room for more. Please everyone spread the word!”

Fine artist Gordon’s story Fine artist and former policeman Gordon Cramer, of Buderim, will this week be delivering a selection of his works, which will be sold on commission.

Gordon uses pencils, fine pens, bamboo and ink or calligraphy pens to create art with words in his unique pieces.

Gordon was glad his pieces will help Bloomhill provide personalised support to those touched by cancer, having had several friends and family members affected.

Echidnas donate $3850 to Mens Shed The Echidnas of Montville were delighted to hand over a $3850 donation to the Mapleton Mens Shed. Earlier this year the social mens group decided to help the community by getting naked for a charity calendar – ‘The Full Montville’ – and it has been a sell-out edition. Local businesses sponsored each month, which covered the printing costs, which meant all proceeds from sales were able to be donated. Sundale to close McGowan Care Centre AGED care provider Sundale has announced a decision to decommission its 53-room McGowan Care Centre aged care facility at Nambour.

Sundale executive Sharon Seymour said the organisation was committed to providing a level of service which not only met but exceeded industry benchmarks.

“McGowan Care Centre is more than 50 years old,” Ms Seymour said.

“When the care centre was built in the 1970s it was cutting edge, however by today’s standards and those outlined in the Australian Aged Care Accreditation Standards, it is no longer fit

for purpose.

“Our care recipients deserve innovative and inspired facilities, not ageing, one dimensional buildings.”

Care recipients, their families and Sundale team members were informed of the decision at a series of face-to-face meetings on Thursday.

Thirty-five elderly residents will have to move out. Ms Seymour said Sundale would make every effort to find a suitable home for the impacted care recipients at one of its nearby Care Centres in Nambour. It is expected the Centre’s final day of operation will be Wednesday, 30 March 2022.

Ella Mitton has launched her own range of designs based on the principles of sustainability and slow fashion.

Dressmaker launches ‘slow fashion’ studio in Yandina ELLA Mitton of Yandina has recently realised a lifetime dream of opening her own business, Juniper Moon Studio.

Having learned to sew at a young age, Ella’s love of dressmaking led her to study fashion at TAFE and from there she has launched her own range of designs based on the principles of sustainability and slow fashion.

“Design, hand drafting patterns and sewing seem like a bit of a dying trade,” Ella explained.

“But I do think that over the past year and a half people have become more aware of the value of ‘slow fashion’ and getting back to locally made and higher quality products in general. It is wonderful that our communities have become closer and are so supportive of locally owned businesses.”

Ella has put together a range of staple pieces for women, from bucket hats to shorts with pockets, pants, jumpsuits, dresses and over-

alls. Her designs are largely made from natural fabrics such as linen and cotton, and vintage or recycled fabrics. Items can be made to order, to fit every size and Ella can also do alterations.

“Beautiful, timeless fabrics like seersucker, cheesecloth and good old fashioned corduroy are coming back, as is modesty,” Ella said. “So many modern designs are extremely revealing and many women really don’t want to wear them for that reason. Certainly for younger girls, it is a bit off putting. It is not an age thing, because my customers range in age from 20 to 70. Feed Barn ingrained in small town country life LYLE and Andree Ravenscroft took over Yandina Feed Barn in 2005 and have become so ingrained in the community they are “almost like the local hairdresser, or the department of births, deaths and marriages,” Andree laughed.

“People call us when they want to know what is going on around town!”

Nambour local, Nancy Cordwell has worked with the couple for many years, and given her working background at her parents’ business, Nambour Farm Supplies, is a terrific source of knowledge for all things animal care.

“We basically sell feed and health supplies for horses, cattle, sheep, chickens, pigs and alpacas,” said Andree. “We can give expert advice on birds, poultry, guinea pigs and other small animals and pets as well.”

Yandina Feed Barn is well known for supplying healthy, happy poultry, from chicks to point of lay.

“Over the past 18 months, we definitely noticed an increased interest in home food production,” Andree said. “We sell the excellent Glasshouse based Rumbalara flower, vegetable and herb seedlings and during the first lockdowns, we had to keep them locked up because people were coming from everywhere to buy them and we were selling out so quickly.

“I think they are so popular because they are sun hardened and grow so well once they are

transplanted. They also have a wonderful range of heirloom seedlings that are particularly popular with home gardeners,” she said.

Yandina Feed Barn stocks the Australian made Rapid Plas water tanks as well. “They are a terrific product, made for Australian conditions,” Lyle said. “And obviously, we like to support fellow Australian businesses.”

Weekend visitors from Brisbane typically drop in to the Feed Barn during trips to the Saturday markets, for many, to relive their childhood in the country.

“You would not believe how many people come in here and just enjoy wandering around, taking in the smells of the hay bales because it reminds them of their childhood,” said Andree.

“Smart Pups also bring their assistance dogs in here during their training so they learn to concentrate, despite all the smells. There is never a dull moment!”

Locals have also come to know and love the shop cat, Nat, who spent his early years keeping the mice and rats at bay.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Andrew Gee said the Rats of Tobruk had earned their place in history and had much to be proud of.

“Rommel and his tanks had rampaged through Europe and it was the Rats, led by an Australian, that stopped them in their tracks.

It was an extraordinary feat of arms that our country takes great pride in and should never forget,” Minister Gee said.

“The Rats showed the world that Germany was not invincible and that the war could be won.”

SUNSHINE Coast Council representatives joined Yandina Community Garden volunteers last Tuesday (November 30) to launch stage two of a Food Waste Loop program.

Led by the dedicated team and volunteers at Yandina Community Gardens, the Food Waste Loop program turns waste from nine Yandina businesses into a compost product.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson said the project explored the role community gardens could play in a circular economy, providing benefits for the Sunshine Coast and Queensland.

Division 10 Councillor David Law said the Food Waste Loop project was an example of council funding supporting the community to embed innovative sustainability practices into everyday living.

“Our community is at the forefront of making local and sustainable decisions which help minimise our environment footprint and reduce our impacts on the region and our planet,” Cr Law said.

“I admire the dedicated team and volunteers at Yandina Community Gardens for their forward-looking approach and community-minded attitude to find new and improved ways of doing things.”

The Food Waste Loop project collects up to 70 buckets of food waste from nine Yandina businesses each week.

The waste is separated into buckets and processed through a hot aerobic compost system,

fed to their commercial worm farm, or fed to their chickens.

The project has diverted more than 24 tonnes of food waste from landfill by creating a sustainable compost resource that can be used for soil regeneration. The program has prevented 45,600kg of CO2 emissions from being released into the atmosphere.

Yandina Community Gardens project officer Emily Boyd said there was massive potential for community gardens to play a pivotal role in our collective response to climate change.

“The Food Waste Loop model is an innovative and creative way to address the problem of food waste and its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions,” Ms Boyd said.

“It allows participating businesses to realise how much waste they are producing and enables them to take ownership of diverting it from landfill.

“This empowers community members to participate in a sustainable system actively and responsibly.

Curious nurses launch own gin and vodka label TUCKED away in Towen Mountain is a brand new distillery that was dreamed up by two theatre nurses who — drinks in hand — had been pondering the similarities between sterilising and distilling.

Kate Gibney and Megan Coffey have been planning to launch Steampunk Distillery since early 2019 and in July this year, they had their first bottles of gin and vodka ready for the market.

“We are a micro distillery so we currently produce approximately 35 bottles at a time,” said Kate. “The way we distill is time-consuming but we are more interested in quality rather than quantity, using as many local and seasonal ingredients as we can — and we are incredibly fussy about the end product!”

“We really enjoy experimenting with new flavours and we incorporate botanicals from our own property into the spirits as well.”

Kate explained “there continues to be a growing interest in the quality of what we eat and drink and where our food comes from.

“All of our spirits are grape based, with our vodka fermented from grape concentrate,” said Kate. “I call Megan the ‘mad fermenter’ and we distill the vodka three times to produce an incredibly delicious, smooth, clean vodka.”

Steampunk Distillery has seven gins and vodkas at the moment, five of which are staple.

The range includes ‘Matron’ (Navy) Gin, Ruby Myrtle Gin, Lemon Eucalypt Gin, Dry Gin and Cinn Gin, Vodka and Kaffir Vodka.

“The Cinn Gin has been released just in time

for Christmas,” Kate said. “It is distilled with c i n n a m o n myrtle and infused with cherries and figs, and is absolutely delicious.

It’s very festive,” she said.

Kate and Megan are proud members of the ADA and QDA, and after entering two spirits into the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards 2021, they have been awarded Silver for both their Lemon Eucalypt Gin and Vodka.

Vertical Farm Systems recently signed a $55 million contract with a Canadian grower who will use their automated technology to grow leafy greens indoors on a multi-level, indoor growing system - the XA Warehouse System.

Vertical Farm Systems is the only equipment seller in Australia providing fully automated growing systems to produce nutritious fresh food at scale, indoors, year round, without relying on skilled labour, favourable weather, high soil fertility or high-water use.

A Forest Glen business has donated $5000 to the Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre, to help its continued provision of vital support services for the needy.

David Krauter, of WebsitesThatSell.com.au, was joined by his staff to hand the funds to the centre’s One Roof Project, whose services will include two innovative new Sleepbuses to provide safe and comfortable sleeping pods for the homeless.

The centre’s CEO Michael Henning said the community’s campaign for the local Sleepbuses was triggered by the killing of two homeless residents as they tried to live their lives on Sunshine Coast streets.

Mr Krauter said he had personally witnessed the homeless living on the streets around his office premises.

“There’s just not enough funding to support the homeless and the testimony to that is just seeing them in the park near our previous office … and we had people with stashes of their belongings all around our premises at the time,” he said.

“Just imagine not being able to sleep because you’re worrying that your life and safety is at stake, but also that your belongings are going to be gone the next morning when you wake up. So the safe sleeps in the Sleepbus will give people that peace of mind, will help them have clarity and then hopefully that’s the first step to them looking at their future in a positive way.

“While we can’t give out meals and things like that, our agency has been very blessed this

The Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre facilitated the community’s fundraising initiative for the Sleepbus, with the necessary funds for the first bus for homeless men raised in just 15 months. And when the call went out for a second bus, to support homeless women and their children, the needed funds were raised within weeks.

The first Sleepbus is nearing completion in Melbourne, and is expected to arrive on the Sunshine Coast in mid-January. It will include 20 secure, climate-controlled, individual sleep pods in twin cabins that each have a lockable door and toilet.

The second Pink Sleepbus for women and children is scheduled for delivery around Easter.

Mapleton Bowls Club rolls out junior team after 75 years MAPLETON Bowls Club has been welcoming members and their guests for 75 years.

But in that time they had never had a Junior Bowls Team.

That was until earlier this year.

The club was recently welcomed a junior bowls team of four members from 11 to 14 years who had their first lesson in July.

The players are Ava Aitken, Brayson Brereton, Hugh Fleming and newest member Dean Bateman. Dean is the grandson of Lynden and Lynette Bateman who have been club members since 1977. They have both won multiple A grade Championships, so Dean is sure to be a natural.

The juniors have been enjoying weekly training sessions and are developing their skills with the help of coach Debbie Sawtell and assistant Mark Paine. Mark is also the team’s sponsor.

Their enthusiasm and dedication continues to grow, despite the challenges of the weather cancelling many of their training sessions.

Later this month Brayson and Hugh will be

representing Mapleton Bowls Club for the very first time in a local Junior Pairs Carnival. The under 18s competition will run for two days on December 11 and 12 at the Glasshouse Mountains Bowls Club.

To commemorate this special occasion, they were recently presented with their Club uniforms and caps.

If you’d like to see great junior bowls in action, come along to the carnival and support this great local event and our local juniors as well.

The Juniors would like to thank Debbie, Mark and the bowls community for their help, support and encouragement.

They train on Fridays from 4pm so if it sounds like something your son or daughter might be interested in, please bring them along to have a “roll up” with the team.

ALL positions on the Woombye Community and Business Association were renominated and elected unopposed at the recent AGM at Woombye Bowls Club.

Re-elected President Debbie Kimber said the WCBA now boasted 115 members having added an extra 42 this year.

She mentioned Council would soon release plans for the Blackall Street streetscape project. A major issue were the concerns of residents about a proposed telecommunications tower located near residents and close to the center of town.

She said the WCBA and the community agreed the location of the tower was inappropriate and “there has been a very strong community reaction to this”. A submission opposing the proposal was prepared by Vice President Grant Palethorpe.

Members of the public signed 330 submissions over a 7 day period to oppose the 40 metre tower with 73 percent of those from Woombye’s township.

The submission objects on several grounds including inappropriate use in a town center, visual amenity, heritage and safety. Mr Palethorpe expected a decision from Council mid to late January. He said the community had provided strong grounds upon which Council should reject the proposal.

Looking to the future, Ms Kimber said next year she wanted the WCBA to focus on pushing for more connectivity for pedestrians and bike riders and would be advocating for more walkbike paths from Woombye to the Big Pineapple and Maroochydore.

“We should be able to walk or cycle to the Big Pineapple and Maroochydore from

Woombye,” she said. “And then the next stage would be to the Uni.” She said the new WCBA website, www. woombye.com.au, was outstanding and paid tribute to Vice president Grant Palethorpe for the work he had done.

She said Social Media Coordinator Daniella Possee had done an excellent job keeping people informed through social channels with reach increasing year on year.

Ms Kimber also paid tribute to Narelle Kither from Woombye Rural Supplies who handled ticket sales and refunds for the Covid-cancelled Hillbilly Hoedown.

The WCBA hopes the event can be held next year, especially considering it was sold out before having to be cancelled earlier this year.

Ms Kimber said timber from a 200-year-old Woombye tree will be stored and used for an art installation of some kind around Woombye.

“It will be able to age and we will have an opportunity to think about what we would like to do with it,” she said.

Member Christine Bennett who had been pushing hard to save the tree’s timber thanked the WCBA for working to get the best outcome from a terrible situation.

The WCBA will also investigate applying for funding to honour a local pioneer woman under a new State Government initiative.

Treasurer Nathan Major said Other Revenue (OR) at $4,720 was the main reason for the end of year profit result of $4,860.28.

He emphasised the need for higher levels of membership or sponsors should be considered so the Association would not have to rely on inconsistent outside revenue to remain profitable.

The Lantern Parade is presented by St Margaret’s Church Woombye, Woombye Childcare and Kindergarten, Bendigo Bank Woombye and Woombye Business and Community Association.

AN impressive array of raffle prizes will be up for grabs at the Woombye Community and Business Association’s Christmas Party on December 14.

Guests will enjoy a great night of Christmas celebrations, a lucky door prize and raffles, and a variety of mouth watering canapés while listening to local band JC and the Tree. Local brewed and distilled drinks will be on sale.

“For those who have been to Grounded and heard JC & the Tree you’ll know the entertainment, alone, will be worth it,” said WCBA event coordinator Michelle Menzel. “This year has thrown many challenges at us so let’s party and celebrate Woombye for being such a great place to live.”

Michelle has been out and about arranging Lucky Door and Raffle Prizes and says they are very impressive. New RE/MAX hot air balloon to fly Coast skies in 2022 SUNSHINE Coast Ballooning and RE/MAX Australia are excited to announce that a new hot air balloon will take to the skies early in 2022.

When it launches, the RE/MAX balloon will be the fifth for Sunshine Coast Ballooning and the largest in its fleet and joins more than 120 RE/MAX hot air balloons flying worldwide.

Co-owners Jonathan Oehm and Christian Uhrig are qualified commercial balloon pilots with extensive experience. Piloting the RE/MAX balloon overseas is included in Jonathan’s flying resume.

“I flew RE/MAX balloons in Western Canada through 2017 and 2018,” he said.

“Especially overseas, when you tell someone that you are a balloon pilot, almost inevitably the question will come back, ‘Do you fly one of the RE/MAX balloons?’, they are that recognisable.”

He said he identified RE/MAX as his preferred name for a new balloon because its hot air balloon was a global icon. Sunshine Coast Ballooning owns the balloon and has full operational control.

experiences in the region’s skies above Maleny to Caloundra, Eumundi to Noosa, and everything between.

“We are delighted the balloon will be Australian-made. In fact, it’s being hand made in Sydney. Build-time is three or four months, and we are anticipating it will be ready to launch in March or April 2022,” Jonathan said.

SLOWER speeds on Ben Williams Road, Yandina, will be in effect from this week in a bid to improve safety through the area.

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton said a 1.5 kilometre section of the road near the Brandons Road intersection would be reduced by 20 km/h.

“The change brings speeds along the road into line with the current 80 km/h speed zone.

“The speed limit reduction was endorsed by the Sunshine Coast Speed Management Committee, which includes representatives from the Queensland Police Service, Sunshine Coast Council and Transport and Main Roads.

“The speed limit review considered a range of factors such as road function, environment, existing construction standard, prevailing traffic speeds and crash history.

“Works to implement the new limit will start next week (week starting 6 December) so I urge drivers to keen an eye out for signage and drive to the conditions.”

Mr Skelton said the change complemented a number of other speed reductions underway in the region.

“We recently reduced the speeds on both Maleny-Kenilworth Road and KenilworthBrooloo Road to reduce the risk of crashes and provide drivers with a safer experience on our roads.”

THE Maleny Street Gardeners’ Alliance, pictured below, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council and NAT140 Div 5 Councillor Winston Johnston have started the process of adding some extra colour and vibrancy to the township, beginning with the round-about at the entrance to Maple Street.

From the response to a recent Facebook post on Maleny Chit-Chat, there appears to be overwhelming support from Maleny residents for the new colourful roundabout planting, and we hope you agree.

Planning is now in progress to look at erecting hanging baskets and place large troughs of flowers along Maple Street, Riverside Centre, the Bridge, Maleny Hotel and the RSL. Mitre 10 of Maleny and their suppliers have also come to the party by donating 50 hanging baskets as well as the potting mix required.

On Tuesday November 30 I was very pleased to attend the Yandina Community Gardens to help launch stage two of a Food Waste Loop program.

This program is led by an extremely dedicated team of volunteers, with the program turning waste from nine Yandina businesses into a compost product.

Our community is at the forefront of making local and sustainable decisions which help minimise our environment footprint and reduce our impacts on the region and our planet.

I admire the dedicated team and volunteers at Yandina Community Gardens for their forward-looking approach and community-minded attitude to find new and improved ways of doing things.

Grass is looking greener

Over the past few weeks our region has experienced heavy rainfall with falls between 100mm and 200mm recorded. The forecast has predicted more significant rainfall over the coming weeks. As we all know, prolonged wet weather makes for a lot of mowing. Right now, our teams are out and about caring for our 1,069 hectares of parklands and reserves across the Sunshine Coast region – that’s equivalent to 1,998 football fields. Our staff and contractors are working extremely hard to ensure we can service every site as soon as possible however we are experiencing some delays. Even when the wet weather clears, our regular schedule may need to change to allow green spaces to dry out - otherwise we can risk significant damage to our parks and grounds.

Mandatory Vaccinations for High-risk Workers

Last week the Premier announced the COVID-19 vaccine will be mandated for workers in schools, early childhood education centres, correctional and youth detention facilities and airports.

With children under 12 unable to receive the vaccine, it is important that people working in schools and early childhood education are protecting themselves and the children around them. This vaccine mandate will also ensure vulnerable people in our corrections system are protected from the virus by a fully vaccinated workforce.

People who work in these settings, even if it is not the primary place of employment, will be required to have their first dose of the vaccine by 17 December and their second dose by 23 January.

Congratulations and farewell to Yandina Baptist Church Pastor David Tidy, who will be leaving the area to take up a new role.

David has been the senior pastor of Yandina Baptist Church since 2010. Enjoy the new position and thank you for all your support in our community.

In September this year, Sunshine Coast Council completed strengthening and repair works on the timber bridge spanning Mary River at the south-eastern end of Eastern Mary River Road, Conondale. These works represent a comprehensive improvement and preservation strategy to address current defects and extend the life of the bridge. The works will ensure a safe river crossing for decades to come.

Stage 2 works will start Monday, December 13 2021, weather permitted. The additional works involve construction teams accessing the underside of the bridge via a truck-mounted, under-bridge inspection unit. Unfortunately, temporary road closure is unavoidable, and I appreciate your patience and consideration while we undertake the next stage of construction. Works are expected to be completed within two weeks, subject to weather and site conditions.

Last Friday marked International Day of People with Disability. For me, this day is a reminder of the importance of embracing the goals of inclusivity and accessibility. Wearing my hat as the Special Envoy for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, few things get me more excited than the idea of embracing these goals in everything we do in the lead up to 2032, from sport and social programs to town planning, design and business.

As I’ve recently shared on social media, I’ve had to step back from things for the last couple of weeks as my wife, Taryn, recuperates from surgery.

I have genuinely appreciated all of the thoughts and prayers we’ve received from so many of you – thank you!

Whilst I have been able to get to the last week of Parliament (after all, it’s what you elect me to do) and will try and get to as many of the school and community Christmas events in the coming weeks, there may be times I have to put my family first.

Again, I appreciate your understanding at this time.

Be reassured though, I and my staff are always available by phone or email and will ensure we assist you with any matter you may have.

HOLIDAYS are a happy time for most of us, but for wildlife it can be a nightmare.

WILVOS operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days of the year. Thank you to our lovely phone volunteers who take shifts on Christmas Day and other holidays.

A beautiful little orphaned wallaby came into care this week. Though very small and furless, what is called a ‘pinkie’, he was found because a motorist stopped to take the dead mother off the road and check the pouch.

He knew not to pull the wallaby off the teat, but checked and cut the teat at the base of the mother’s pouch. There is no blood and gore!

It is just like a piece of string. As more of our wildlife are disappearing each day, every life is precious and this little joey is definitely precious!

As the holiday season approaches, it is a good time to remind everyone to dispose of plastic bags responsibly as it is a time when plastic bait packets and such are blown into the waterways where they can be lethal to platypus in the creeks and to turtles in the ocean. Fishing line needs to be cut into small pieces when disposed of, to prevent entanglement by our wildlife.

Don’t forget to buy wildlife friendly Christmas presents – nest boxes for birds and possums, and make up dreys out of hanging baskets for ringtail possums. Hollow logs on the ground give our little reptiles a safe haven. Your local native animals will be very grateful.

$75,000 for elite cycling event

I was delighted to join the Australian Cycling Academy recently to announce $75,000 of Federal Government support for their national cycling event to be held on the Sunshine Coast over the next three years. In a decade’s time, the world’s best cyclists will descend on the Sunshine Coast for the 2032 Games and will tread the same roads that our Cycle Sunshine Coast riders will this December.

My vision for the 2032 Games:

The 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will provide the Sunshine Coast with a once in a lifetime opportunity. An opportunity to think big and be bold. That’s exactly what I’ve done this month by publicly announcing my priority projects in the lead up to the Games. Namely, this includes full duplication – that’s two tracks – between Beerwah and Nambour and the long awaited new heavy rail connection between Beerwah and the Maroochydore CBD. I have also unveiled my personal vision for a worldclass entertainment centre to host the Olympic Basketball preliminaries.

It would be the most iconic landmark on the Sunshine Coast, with a capacity to host major sporting events, exhibitions and conferences as well as world-class performing arts and theatre. I have been advocating for these projects for many years and now the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will provide the Sunshine Coast with the best chance to deliver them.

Wet season welcome but ... if it’s flooded forget it

After many dry months, I don’t think anyone would bemoan the rains and storms that have visited the electorate over recent weeks.

Yes, they have meant events like the Maleny Country Fair have been postponed and they’ve delayed the roadworks on Maleny-Kenilworth Road and Maleny-Stanley River Road.

And I’ve received plenty of reports of flooding, of drainage issues and trees down.

But I know the local farmers are welcoming the rain and it’s certainly topping up our water supplies across the region.

I reiterate the message though – if it’s flooded, forget it!

Tragically, just last week we saw the dreadful consequences when that advice is ignored out on the Darling Downs.

I must admit, I am crossing my fingers that the rain doesn’t stymie the Mooloolah Four Seasons Markets, the Montville Chamber of Commerce’s Festive Street Fair and the Maleny Christmas Street Carnival!

Celebrating the festive season across our communities is just what we all need.

Sunshine Coast Commuter Advocate

On 20 October 2020, I signed the Terms of Reference for a Community Reference Group (CRG).

This community initiative was created by Transport and Main Roads (TMR), and I commend them for their community engagement.

Two groups were created: B2N South which looked at Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah and Landsborough; and B2N North that encompassed Mooloolah, Eudlo, Palmwoods, Woombye and Nambour.

These groups were to have input and discussion on the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade (B2N).

I have stated before that this name does not reflect the actual works – and it is a point of great contention to me given the numbers of people who are surprised to learn that there is NO plan to duplicate the North Coast Line (NCL) rail north of Beerwah.

Thus leaving the 360,000 people of the Sunshine Coast with a single train track originating 26km south of Nambour (or 40km south from Maroochydore).

My B2N North group met twice, on 19 November and 3 December, 2020.

On 2 December 2021, I received notice of its formal dissolution.

Stage 1 works in our group was limited to an expansion of the park and ride area on the eastern side of Nambour railway station, adding 50 carparks.

It also included a map and discussion on a proposed recreation trail – which was a nice surprise addition to the project.

The map showed a recreation trail running 20km from Beerburrum to Landsborough.

The detailed map spanned about 3 tables long (5.4m). Fantastic, you say. I thought so too.

It was a good proposal. After asking questions I learned that the funded recreation trail would only go 5.1km from one town to the next, Beerwah to Glass House, with $6.5 million allocated. It had a design spend of $400k, leaving $6.1 million to build it.

Still, it was a nice suggestion – and possibly made available from the vacant land allocated for the duplicated rail corridor - that still awaits use for another future track, and trains.

My letter of dissolution noted an allocation of $6.25 million to study rail duplication north of Beerwah.

I discussed this in my SVGazette Op-Ed of 7 July 2020, because it was supposed to be a $10 million study, made up of a $5 million co-contribution from both the state and federal governments.

Ted O’Brien, the federal MP for Fairfax arranged their $5m funding contribution, but like most allocations for Sunshine Coast rail, the state government again short-changed us with a miserly $1.25 million co-contribution.

TMR, in their correspondence, say that they’re ready to commence the next phase of community engagement, with a series of public information displays for rail communities between Beerburrum and Nambour.

This on the Stage 1 (delivery phase) works.

In addressing any $6.25m study questions, I ask that you ask three questions: • Will they remove the 40km/h ‘S’ bends at Eudlo?

• Will they address the freight bottleneck that peaks in 2023?

• Why are the passing loop extensions limiting freight trains to 950m long (when required to be 1500m long)?
