Rudolph takes day off as Firies give Santa a lift around sunny Palmwoods FOR Palmwoods kids it was almost too good to be true. Santa Claus and fire engines, all in the one day! It was all thanks to the Palmwoods Rural Fire Brigade whose members were on hand on Sunday to give Santa a lift and spread some Christmas cheer around town.

It was the first of what will become an annual Santa Parade through local streets.

Santa called on the firies in order to give Rudolph and the rest of his reindeer a break from the Aussie summer heat.

The Palmwoods Rural Fire Brigade was only too happy to help.

Santa and his firefighter helpers visited eight popular spots around town as kids sat with him for photos, hugs, some lollies or even just to give him a wave.

Santa had a busy schedule so the firies assisted with lights flashing and sirens sounding to avoid delays.

Santa said he appreciated the work done by the local firies.

“It’s too hot for me,” he said.

“I prefer the north pole. But I do enjoy delivering presents to all the boys and girls around Palmwoods and the hinterland.”

“I think it’s amazing that they started doing this,” a parent said. “It brings a lot of joy and all those good feelings. It just makes everyone really happy.”

Fresh vision for C-Square Investor sees looming potential in Nambour CBD

THE new owners of Nambour’s iconic C-Square office and retail property hope to take advantage of what they predict will be a resurgence in the former sugar town.

Sandran Property Group managing director William Phillips said his company looked forward to being part of the positivity and rebirth

of the town by refurbishing C-Square office spaces and bringing jobs and life back to Currie Street and the CBD. “Sandran’s had 25 years experience in owning and re-positioning properties and in construction,” Mr Phillips said. “So this is not new or uncharted territory for us in the sense of re-positioning this property. We have a long history with government tenants throughout all of Australia. And we’ve owned other property in Nam-

bour for over 10 years.”

Mr Phillips said everyone in Nambour was keen to attract employment and new commerce. “But you’ve got to provide the tenancies that are fit-for-purpose, whether that’s small, medium or large business. It’s a challenge, and the current stock needs to be re-positioned to achieve that and attract major tenants.”

population growth. “Nambour has a city centre,” he said. “It has a main street. And it has a history. It’s got character, it’s got people, it’s got community, it’s got a heart, which is what everyone wants. We just need to re-energize that, as a community, to be able to draw employment, attract people, and give people opportunities that allow Nambour to continue to flourish with the growth in population.”

Former owner proud of C-Square’s social & commercial contributions from Tracy Martin, recent owner C-Square WE had our last day of owning C-Square on Friday December 10. We bought the property in June 2009 and we have seen it change from primarily a government office location, to be the home of some energetic new businesses.

These include the Compass Institute, Red Boss Productions and many others, who meet important needs of the community, such as Queensland Health and various health service, job and disability support providers.

Looking back, we are most proud of bringing Majestic Cinemas to Nambour.

While the Council Civic Centre was much loved, it wasn’t used as much as it could have been.

Majestic Cinemas have created a destination for families and movie lovers of all ages to come to Nambour and enjoy themselves in a comfortable and convenient location.

Our hope was that great ideas like the Bison Bar and the cafes, Switch and Endless Time, would be joined by other dining options to create a full entertainment experience for locals and those nearby.

Unfortunately, this potential got cut short by COVID, among other issues.

However, the success of Stalwart’s Brewing and other local restaurants growing and developing may yet create this entertainment ecosystem. We hope that we have contributed a foundation for this opportunity to continue to develop.

We have worked hard to be part of the community. Our placemakers, including Ardleigh Cleveland, Holly Walker, Wallea Eaglehawk, Lisa Fry and Mary Edgerton over the years, worked with many community groups to stage events at C-Square and find ways for C-Square to be not only geographically at the heart of Nambour, but also to be a place where people can meet.

We also look back on the changes we have made to the building, in partnership with many wonderful local professionals.

“Developments or refurbishments like ours will help give people confidence. It’s about bringing people together to bring employment back, to give people confidence that they can start their own small businesses and succeed.

“Our view for this property, is that we may be a catalyst for change, in the sense of bringing jobs, bringing social and economic benefits, so that people can work, live and play in a fantastic environment.

“Nambour needs to re-cement itself as a place to be connected. And this building at C-Square really is at the heart of Nambour, in terms of the train, the bus interchange. And it does have the benefits of parking, office and retail, so it’s a fantastic opportunity, along with the rest of Nambour.”

Some of the highlights were:

• Replacing the old fountain, that didn’t work, at the front of the building with the Soundhouse, thanks to the design from Phil Smith, of Diecke Richards architects at the time.

• Painting almost the whole building, to update the look and presentation on the street,

C-Square is an approximately 7000m2 site in the heart of Nambour, with 9336m2 of lettable area over three floors with 175 car parks. It backs on to Nambour Railway Station and the Bus Interchange.

The area occupied by C-Square was once known as Station Square, housing the original Nambour Town Hall back in 1913. In 1920, the Prince of Wales took a trip to Nambour to express his gratitude to World War I soldiers and their families. This occurred right in the Station Square and was attended by over 2,000 people.

The buildings experienced many changes over the next few decades: fires, replacements, establishing new buildings, and ongoing revitalisations.

By 2015, the complex was renamed C-Square (formerly Centenary Square) marking the 25th anniversary of the building’s first opening, which took place in 1990. Today, it serves as a vital landmark in the local CBD district, servicing retail and commerce sectors.

Beneath all of that, keeping a building that is now 30 years old, operating involves a lot of effort from air-conditioning techs, plumbers, electricians, cleaners, security ... all of which provides local jobs.

One person at the centre of this has been Louie, our caretaker for the entire time we have owned the building. He has been a constant presence, every morning, making sure things were clean and tidy and working well. He will be greatly missed.

As owners, we feel we have done our best to modernise C-Square, but that it is now time to hand it on to others to develop further. We hope the future for C-Square and Nambour is bright!

Ceramicist creates shining example of kindness in clay NINETEEN year old Palmwoods student Kelsey Northcott, has made her debut in small business by focussing on ‘small acts to change the world’.

In doing so Kelsey has already made a valuable contribution to help the local homeless community.

“I want to be able to look back on my life and know that I did everything I could to bring some light to those who need it the most,” Kelsey said.

After completing her education at Suncoast Christian College, Kelsey enrolled to study economics at USC and has started her business Sun Ceramics & Co from her home studio.

“I love the idea of having my own business, because apart from allowing me to be independent and creative, it also enables me to help others,” she explained.

Kelsey produces clay kits consisting of raw clay and tools, which people can purchase to make their own ceramic pieces. All proceeds from the clay kits are donated to the Shack in Nambour.

“I also make ceramic pieces to sell, and run ceramic classes,” Kelsey said. “You can bring your little ones, your mum, your bestie or your other half. You will be welcomed with a platter and a table set up for hand building.

“Then you will be shown through the techniques used in handbuilding and put on the right path to creating your pieces”. ▶ The Sun Ceramics classes are held at Hello Studio in Buderim and the kits can be purchased from the website www.sunceramicsco.com.au or from Slide Coffee in Coolum and Caloundra.

ALLONA Lahn is a senate candidate for the Informed Medical Options Party who will stand at the upcoming federal election. She also stood for the seat of Nicklin at last year’s State Government election. Ms Lahn is opposed to vaccine mandates and worried about their effects on the community.

She co-organised a Freedom Rally recently which attracted more than 10,000 people to Cotton Tree. On Saturday she spoke to a much smaller crowd at a “Hinterland Freedom Protest” in Nambour.

The Gazette asked her about the support she has been attracting for her stance against vaccine mandates.

What is your basic argument?

Our argument is freedom of choice, body autonomy and full, informed consent. I stand against two-tiered societies, mandatory segregation and discrimination based on drug status.

People are objecting to the erosion of rights and choice. They are objecting to the coercion.

Your recent Freedom Rally at Cotton Tree attracted between 10,000 and 14,000 people.

Why do you think you are getting this level of support?

I’m not surprised by the support. I’m surprised we’re not getting more! People are objecting and they’re objecting to the coercion, the intimidation, the bullying that’s happened with their jobs, with their bodies, their employees, with their patients and customers, with the mandated vaccines.

They’re objecting to the discrimination and segregation and they’re objecting to being forced into a two-tiered society.

They had to coerce people, families and businesses to have a jab.

And people are getting p---ed off. We have vaccinated people come to our events because they’ve been intimidated and coerced. And they’ve been threatened into having that jab — threatened.

So even the vaccinated are getting annoyed because they know that it doesn’t stop there.

You’ve got to get booster shots.

You’re going to have never-ending booster shots with every strain. All for a coronavirus that has a 99.9 percent survival rate. It’s just madness.

What’s your message to businesspeople who are struggling with policing the vaccine mandates?

I feel terrible for them. They’ve been forced into an unbearable position.

I spoke to a pub owner on the weekend who was just broken and extremely stressed.

His pub was almost empty and he’d lost $10k over Friday and Saturday.

It’s just lies after lies after lies and people are pressured into being vaccinated and segregated against their wishes.

We really need to question the validity of the alleged 80 percent vaccination rate given that so many pubs, clubs and cafes were empty over the weekend.

These businesses should not have to bear the brunt of this.

They already have the stress of running a business but they are now the police of vaccinations and threatened with large fines if they don’t conform.

What do you say to people who say you are irresponsibly spreading misinformation and putting lives at risk?

I would say, according to the manufacturer’s own insert found on the Government TGA website, the vaccine does not stop the transfer of the virus, nor does it stop you getting the virus. I would say the vaccine is unsafe and vaccine injuries are grossly under-reported. The jab should be a choice without threats, bullying, coercion, segregation or discrimination. We should end the mandates now.

Wedding venues prepare for Showcase Maleny couple moves on but their legacy remains at Fig Tree Medical practice AFTER a tumultuous two years Hinterland Tourism is looking forward to welcoming thousands of people to its Hinterland Wedding Summer Showcase next year.

The Summer Showcase will take place January 8 and 9, 2022.

Hinterland Tourism President Kerry Brown said nine venues were opening their doors for the weekend.

“The Hinterland Summer Showcase is growing in popularity each year, and gives couples a chance to really feel the essence of the hinterland and what we have on offer,” she said.

“We are so grateful to have more certainty this year and are really looking forward to welcoming people up to the beautiful hinterland so our amazing vendors can shine a spotlight on their incredible offerings.”

Suppliers on site will include celebrants, wedding planners, entertainers, makeup artists, photographers, cake decorators, venue decorators, and all the suppliers of the exquisite extras that create cherished memories of your wedding day.

“We also have a range of prizes on offer, including $10,000 towards wedding services in the region for one lucky couple,” Ms Brown said.

“The hinterland wedding industry is worth $50 million to the Sunshine Coast economy, and we all feel like 2022 might be the year we finally see some sort of normality return.”

Tiffany’s Maleny owner Kelly Tilse said there was now more certainty across the industry, with borders open and high vaccination rates.

“Weddings can already be an extremely emotional time for couples and when you add in lockdowns and rescheduling there has been a lot of stress, to say the least,” she said.

“We are now excited to move forward, and meet some amazing couples from far and wide and show them why Maleny is one of the best wedding destinations in the country.”

Mrs Tilse said next year’s summer showcase would be even more special, as it’s the first time the venue is opening to the public under its new branded vision.

Formerly Weddings at Tiffany’s, Tiffany’s Maleny is now the place for all celebrations.

During COVID-19 the team quickly pivoted to fill its cancellation calendar with a high tea offering, and the positive reaction from the public is what inspired Mrs Tilse to make those changes more permanent.

“While COVID was no doubt one of the toughest times for our business, this new direction we are now heading in is the silver lining in all of this,” Mrs Tilse said.

A sunny morning and a range of books brought book lovers to find favourite authors and stories while supporting this popular Community Library and our local businesses.

From tiny tots to readers of all ages our Librarian team were kept very busy ensuring as many books as possible were heading to a new home whilst enabling our Community Library to purchase new books, magazines and other

necessary items.

Outcomes for this day exceeded our expectations and ensured our goals for future events will continue to enable this local community icon to provide our volunteer service.

ON 28 January 2015 Dr Peter Wynn and his wife Robyn, as practice nurse, consulted with the first patient after establishing Maleny’s Fig Tree Medical Centre.

The couple transformed the heritage house in 10 Cedar street into a charming practice full of character and warmth. More importantly, it has become a comfort zone for patients seeking quality clinical and personal care.

Having spent most of his life in remote GP environments in various countries, Dr Peter is well skilled in all aspects and challenges of rural medicine. His staff have contributed to the caring ambience of the Practice, and it is little wonder Fig Tree Medical Centre has become a popular choice for patients in Maleny and the greater Hinterland.

After years of selfless service to the Maleny community, Dr Peter and Robyn have decided to hand down the baton to other doctors and healthcare professionals, from January 2022.

“It will be sad not to see their faces every day at Fig Tree Medical,” said practice business owner- manager, Dr Johan Oelofse. “But we are hopeful that Dr Peter might still come to do some sessions once he has enjoyed some well earned time to rest, travel, garden and spend time with his family,” he said.

Dr Jocelyn Eggins is a well-known and respected Maleny resident who has established herself over the years as a GP who is serious about quality medicine and improving clinical outcomes – but always with a personal touch and commitment to genuine patient care.

“Such is Dr Jocelyn’s dedication to the wellbeing of her patients, we believe she will continue to build on the legacy of true healthcare,” Dr Oelofse said.

RangeCare wins ‘Excellence in Aged Services Award’ Multi-million-dollar fire and emergency services complex for Maleny A new $3.9 million emergency services facility was officially opened recently (December 9) in Maleny by Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan MP, and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner Greg Leach.

Commissioner Leach said the new facility will house three QFES services, Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) auxiliary firefighters, and Rural Fire Service (RFS) and State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers.

“QFES is a unique department in that it is supported by a well-trained workforce – both paid and volunteer – that is committed to serving their community,” Mr Leach said.

“It’s important we recognise the implications of a changing climate and population growth in areas like Maleny and build infrastructure to match the community’s evolving needs.

“Maleny and the surrounding hinterland areas can feel at ease knowing their local firefighters and volunteers are working hand in hand to keep the community safe.

“This new station will boost QFES’ capability now and into the future.”

Minister Ryan said the facility represented the importance of investing in community safety.

“This multi-agency complex will serve as an important hub for Sunshine Coast operations and significantly boost QFES’ capability in the area,” Mr Ryan said.

“This fit-for-purpose complex was designed to replace the outdated FRS station and the co-located SES and RFS shed, with a more spacious and modern facility.

“The facility is centrally located and at the

junction of major roads, allowing for emergency services personnel to swiftly respond to all types of incidents in the area.

“It features a separate four-bay storage shed, three offices, a joint training room, equipment and personal protective equipment room, as well as a backup power generator.”

The building project also boosted the local community with 12 jobs created and a local contractor engaged for the construction.

About Macadamias

Did you know the macadamia is native to Australia, particularly north eastern New South Wales and central and south eastern Queensland?

Long before European settlement, the macadamia nut formed part of the diet of Aboriginal people in these regions.

They were highly valued, and also traded between tribes and used as special ceremonial gifts at inter-tribal corroborees.

The German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt collected the macadamia in the 1840s from the Conondale ranges near Maleny.

However, the plant was not officially named until 1857.

Ferdinand von Mueller, a British botanist, named it after Dr John Macadam, a chemist, medical man and member of the legislative assembly for Castlemaine in Victoria.

Leesa Neilen loves animals — including her puppy ‘Yoko’, and believes “every pet deserves to have a loving send off”.

But one Yandina businesswoman is working to help soften the blow of a pet’s passing by offering dignified and specialised after care.

Balance with Colour talk well received A talk presented by Lorraine and Dr Bob Roberts about their Balance With Colour technique at the Nambour Community Centre was well received though with only a few in attendance.

The aim of the 15 December presentation was to teach a technique that helps people avoid sliding into depression and promotes balance in their thinking. It is based on messages from nature.

Bob and Lorraine were happy to once again honour their late son, James, who wanted to attain his PhD to make a difference and improve our world using his art.

James wanted a more tolerant, compassionate, understanding and well-informed world. Some still on the Coast may remember James’ performance artworks while at Burnside High in the mid-1980s—soon after they returned to Australia after ten years in Papua New Guinea. One performance in particular was held outside the Nambour Library to send

out the vital messages to save our trees and animal habitats.

Similarly inclined is his sister, Muria, who founded an organisation, called Multispecies Education International (MEI) information about which can still be seen on YouTube, to sensitise the world to the importance of human/ animal interaction and eco-health.

Muria and her husband wrote a book about their work titled Achieving a Shared World. The Roberts children’s intent since their arrival on the coast some 40 years ago has been as a family to help improve our quality of life.

Hospital Road pedestrian works notice

MEMBER for Nicklin Rob Skelton’s office has advised crews will start work in early January 2022 on works to improve the safety of the Nambour-Mapleton Road and Hospital Road pedestrian crossing, near Nambour General Hospital.

The $400,000 investment will improve safety and accessibility for people using the crossing to access the Hospital and nearby businesses.

Works involve installing new traffic signal poles and electrical upgrades to the traffic signals.

There will be minor reconfiguration of the nearby traffic islands to make it easier to access signal buttons and improve pedestrian and wheelchair accessibility at the intersection.

New line marking will also be carried out.

Due to high daytime traffic volumes, works will be undertaken at night, Monday to Thursday from 6pm to 3.30am.

Recycled paintings art sale raises $6000 ROBYN Wight came up with a novel idea to raise money for local charities after observing what happened to the paintings from a relative’s home when they recently decided to downsize.

Being an artist herself, and also a member of Lions Club of Blackall Range, Robyn organised an Art Sale of her paintings last month with proceeds going to Lions Club of Blackall Range for distribution to needy organisations.

Robyn mentioned her idea to some artist friends, and Marianne Reardon, Nicole Virtuel and Diana O’Connor, all Robyn Wight with Peter Wight and George Kachaniwsky came on board.

Eudlo’s new shady, cool and green main street revealed ROSEBED Street in Eudlo will be seeing even more green with Sunshine Coast Council finalising the new streetscape design.

In November last year, council asked the community to share what they loved and what could be improved to enhance Rosebed Street, so a draft streetscape concept plan could be developed.

Sunshine Coast Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston said further feedback was sought on the final concept plan in July 2021.

“Thank you to all the locals, visitors and businesses who worked with our Placemaking and Design team, attended a series of community events and completed the online surveys, so we can create a cool, shady and green space we can all enjoy,” Cr Johnston said.

“This new and improved streetscape aims to enhance the day-to-day experience of people living, working and visiting the hinterland town.

“The final concept plan reflects the community’s values and vision for safer streets both for pedestrians and road users, and provides an attractive and appealing walkable environment which is cool and leafy.

“To keep our youngest residents safe when walking and riding to school, the pedestrian crossing on Rosebed Street and Corlis Avenue will be upgraded.

“Three new garden beds will be installed along the main street to beautify and green the urban environment.

“I’m proud to see the final design embody

the community’s values and deliver social, economic and sustainable benefits for locals and businesses in Eudlo.”

Council’s series of placemaking projects aims to create vibrant places that enhance the unique characters of our towns by drawing from community feedback.

Construction is scheduled to take place from Monday, January 10, 2022 and is expected to take two weeks, weather and site conditions dependant. There is no substitute for blood which is needed somewhere in Australia every 18 seconds.

Blood donors needed this Christmas WITH consecutive long weekends coming up, and half of all blood donation appointments still not being attended, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is calling for an additional 9,000 people to roll up their sleeves over the Christmas break.

“Christmas can be a challenging time for Lifeblood, as some of our regular donors take time out to celebrate and catch up with family and friends,” Lifeblood Executive Director of Donor Services, Cath Stone said.

“This year we are anticipating many of our regular donors will take the opportunity to travel now that much of the country and our

international borders have reopened.”

Lifeblood said 9,000 donors were needed between Boxing Day and January 3 to ensure patients receive the blood and blood products they need over the festive season, with appointments to be filled right across the country.

In recent weeks, appointment “no shows” have reached a record high with one in two not being attended.

Howitzer finally has a permanent home THIS Australian Army L5 Pack Howitzer field gun finally has a permanent home.

It is now on display at the Nambour Museum in Mitchell Street, thanks to a grant from the Sunshine Coast Council and support from Nambour RSL, Coastland Arbor Services, David Easton Mini Excavations and Troon Group.

Museum volunteers contributed many hours of labour to the project.

During its service life, the gun was deployed to Malayasia, Borneo and Vietnam.

It was acquired by the Nambour RSL in 1998 for display outside the club where it remained until passed on to the Museum in 2011. Ten years later it is now displayed in a prominent purpose-designed shelter.

“It is an important component of the Nam-

bour Museum’s Salute to the Services collection,” said Museum spokesperson Barbara Want. “There were many arguments (for and against) when the gun was taken from the front of the Nambour R.S.L. Many people will be happy to see the gun on display again.”

Proposed traffic calming measures would cost 14 car parks in Palmwoods TMR recently unveiled concept designs for proposed pedestrian safety upgrades at three locations on Margaret Street in response to local concerns. Residents have been urged to have a say. All local residents and business owners should be made aware of the huge impact the proposed changes would have on Margaret Street commerce.

The proposal includes traffic-calming devices, upgrades to existing crossings near the post office and Rick’s Garage and a new crossing near the Palmwoods Bakery.

But what people may not realise is that 14 car parks (out of about 50 total on-street parks) will be lost if the changes go ahead as planned.

I think the community should know about this proposal. Parking is already at a premium in Palmwoods today. Is main roads, with this proposal, trying to shut down the commercial viability of the shops in Palmwoods?

The problem is that this road running through Palmwoods is deemed to be a main road & over the years TMR & Council have not addressed the growing traffic & infrastructure problems

I wish to give a sincere thanks the new owners in Cedar St, who inherited the massive clump of destructive dangerous Camphor Laurel Trees, which they had removed some time ago. So many negative comments were made. I asked the negative people to do some home work, before making such comments.

Every part of the Camphor Laurel is highly toxic, especially the seeds which have the greatest effect on our bird species. Unfortunately so many medium to large birds feed on the seeds as they don’t have enough Native Rainforest Seeds to choose from. The toxic seeds are causing serious damage to birds reproductive systems, which is stopping them from breeding.

And as the Camphor and many other woody invasive weeds have spread so much in the last five years, the problem is causing a very bleak future for the health of our bird population.

Nature is extremely complex and our general landscape needs our help, back on the road back to health.

And that is exactly what the lovely couple in Cedar St have done.

Those destructive trees were also extremely dangerous to falling on property etc, and have finally been removed and it was absolutely the right decision. It is only a shame that the cost was left for so long and for consecutive owners to bear. The massive cost of removing such trees grows with each year. If pulled out as seedlings

We all want traffic calming but is this really the best plan? Does it have to be at the expense of car parks.

Surely we can have parking and calming.

I think the proposed plan submitted is not acceptable and the town should be made aware of what the main roads division is proposing.

Surely with all the technology etc., that we have today - better suggestions/alternatives can be proposed that won’t cost any parking spaces.

Nambour left off the map It’s been great to see the effort from the Federal Government to fund the Reimagine Nambour project and the much-needed IAM NAMBOUR campaign.

It’s also great to see the upgrades to the Bruce Highway near Sippy Downs and Palmview, which received significant Federal Government funding.

It’s been noticeable to me, however, that the two projects haven’t melded together very well.

In all the roadworks between Caloundra and Sippy Downs/Buderim, I can’t see even one road sign that advises motorists how to get to Nambour. There are signs pointing to Palmview, Glenview, Buderim, Tanawha etc, and even several road signs pointing out the route to get to Gympie. But signs to Nambour seem to have been forgotten.

The first sign to Nambour that I can see is that in the northbound lane of the highway just before the Nambour Connection Road intersection.

Nambour’s struggles and its fight for survival might benefit from signage so that tourists and locals who may wish to visit the town are provided with the directions how to get there.

Restoring Hope Parkinson’s Therapy ended the year on a high note at Sundale Garden Village Palmwoods.

Singing up a storm in Palmwoods, literally DESPITE the Ups and Downs of 2021, and looming afternoon storms, Restoring Hope Parkinson’s Therapy ended the year on a high note at Sundale Garden Village Palmwoods recently.

The Village very kindly hosted a Christmas Carols Sing-A-Long featuring the Choir of Sound Intent (COSI) made up of members of the RHPT LOUD Crowd and their carers.

This was the first public performance of the members led by the Musical Director Riani Rattray and accompanied by some talented musicians on Harps, keyboard, guitar and drums, and the wonderful and enthusiastic Sundale Village residents.

The Sing-A-Long was organised by Peter Stidolph, a Sundale resident and COSI member, opened by Stephen Marshall, Chairman of Bendigo Woombye & District Community Bank, and closed by Leigh Kersnovske of Sundale. Proceedings were kept in order by Scott Grimley, whose wife, Wendy is also a member of the LOUD Crowd.

Funds raised on the day and through donations by local businesses will go directly to paying for on-going speech and swallowing therapy programs for Sunshine Coast residents living with Parkinson’s Disease.

ON a beautiful autumn day, just two days before the official start of summer, the Speak Up Now – Stop Domestic and Family Violence group unveiled its fifth Red Bench.

This bench was installed in collaboration with and the support of the congregation of the Maleny Uniting Church. It is situated in the grounds of the church and overlooks the hauntingly beautiful Obi Obi creek.

Speak Up Now member Val France hoped its inviting location would attract members of the congregation and the passing traffic and tradespeople who often stop and use the carpark as a resting place.

“The aim is that people will sit and have meaningful conversations with others about how we as a whole community can stand up and say no to domestic and family violence,” she said.

“The Speak Up Now group would like the community to be active bystanders.

“So that if we hear or see something hap-

pening within our families, between our friendship couples, at the pub, in the street, or elsewhere, which clearly shouldn’t be between two people that we feel able to speak up and where possible safely intervene to de-escalate the situation.

“We can all act as good Samaritans if we wish to, so let’s all try to do our bit in 2022 to help reduce domestic and family violence within our community.

“With your help the Speak Up Now group will go some way in achieving its aim to eliminate domestic and family violence within our community.”

While unveiling the red bench Reverend Minister Liena Hoffman challenged the community to help inspire better outcomes: “How can we all help to change the Ending?”

Val said people needed to stand up and speak up and say “no more domestic and family violence and related murders where we live”.

Developers back off

Woombye wins fight against 40m tower THE voice of the people has won the day in Woombye with developers earlier this month withdrawing a Development Application for a 40 metre phone tower near the centre of town.

“In short we won,” said Woombye Community & Business Association President Debbie Kimber. “There will be no tower at Campbell Street.”

Applicant Stillmark Holdings withdrew the application for the proposed Telecommunications Facility at 1-9 Campbell St, Woombye (see visual, right).

The development application received over 350 submissions in opposition, such was the opposition that approval would have required going in front of a Council meeting.

“Concerned by the inappropriate location so close to residents the WCBA prepared the submission opposing the proposal,” said Ms Kimber.

“The WCBA thanks the community for coming together so strongly. We can feel very satisfied with this outcome.”

The community argued that the 40 metre high tower would unduly impact on the amenity and landscape values of the area.

Many nearby residents had also expressed their concerns over the long term unknown health impacts from such a facility.

WCBA wraps up successful year. Party on!

Great news for Division 10 groups

Well done to some of the recent successful applicants in Council’s latest round of Minor Grants. The Probus Club of Nambour Inc. received $462 towards the purchase of a portable public address system for use at club meetings and activities held in the Masonic Hall in Yandina, Yandina School of Arts Incorporated received $2000 to help replace windows, Yandina Chamber of Commerce Inc. received $1200 towards a member drive, and Mapleton Bowls Club Incorporated received $1995 towards the purchase of a defibrillator and cabinet. More than $81,000 was delivered to 50 local not-forprofit organisations. The Community Grants Program’s next round will be a Major Grant round, opening February 1 and closing March 14, with notification anticipated before May 9, 2022. Stay safe this Christmas

I extend best wishes to you and your family for a safe, happy and enjoyable Christmas and a prosperous New Year! Everyone experiences this time of year differently, so please look after one another, and be extra safe on the roads during the holiday period.

I would like to remind constituent to take extra care on the roads this Christmas and New Year period.

The ‘Fatal Five’ continue to be contributing factors to more than half of lives lost on Queensland roads.

The ‘Fatal Five’ - speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, fatigue, and driver distraction – are factors in more than half of lives lost on Queensland roads.

It’s incredibly important that all drivers are aware of the danger associated with these actions.

The Palaszczuk Government is working hard to make our roads safer but needs drivers to do the right thing.

We’re doing this by investing more in road safety, building better roads, creating tougher laws, and rolling out new technology to crack down on drivers doing the wrong thing.

Drivers are reminded to be aware of new distracted driver cameras across the state, that went live from the start of November.

As we head into the silly season, don’t be silly on the roads.

Give someone the best Christmas present you can, which is arriving home safely.

My office has received a high amount of inquiries from concerned constituents about the Queensland State Government’s strict health directives that have now taken effect.

While this is not in the jurisdiction of the Federal Government, please continue to contact my office if you are in need.

This is a difficult time for many, and so I urge everyone to be as understanding and compassionate as they can be.

As I write this final column for 2021, I am very conscious of the thousands of displaced Queenslanders who have begun or have completed the long trek to the border. I and my office staff have been fielding calls for months trying to assist people navigating the rules for border permits for people who were both flying or driving home.

It has been a long haul, and I am painfully aware of the hardships suffered by people who left the state for various legitimate reasons— travel to see friends and family, travel to take care of ailing parents, and people who have purchased property in Queensland, hoping to make a new life in this wonderful state.

And particularly the caravaners who took to the open road as they were encouraged to do.

My heart has gone out to them, and it has been very difficult to try to find workable solutions to a myriad of problems, and often the only thing we could do was to provide a shoulder and a message of hope.

And at this time of year, I am hoping that those on the road heading home for the first time in months will feel the message of Christmas and hope for the future as they wind their way. One of my constituents has said, as she approached the QLD border near Tenterfield, “… we should be home late this afternoon - and I swear that we won’t be leaving Maleny for months and months!”

Would you like to be a WILVOS carer? Training is given, as we all began knowing little. Most wildlife carers work, so everyone chooses just how much help they can offer.

Entirely run by volunteers, WILVOS are so appreciative to the members of the public who have offered help in so many ways. Our joeys are sporting very glamorous pouches! Local businesses have been so supportive, some holding some unique fundraising events. To every person who rings up concerned about injured or orphaned or displaced animals, we cannot thank you enough. You are saving our wildlife for the future.

WILVOS would like to thank the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, RSPCA’s Eumundi Wildlife Centre and all our local vets.

They do wonderful work with an enormous amount of wildlife. Without their help our wildlife would suffer more than necessary. As carers we can only do so much, and veterinary assessment and care is often needed before we rehabilitate the animals.

WILVOS also deserve thanks for supporting their carers so well. Meeting food costs for carers has meant that wildlife carers can continue their wonderful work even if their economic circumstances change.

Sadly, our ringtail and brushtail possums, and our few remaining gliders, are being displaced at an ever-increasing rate.

This year saw a larger number of carnivorous marsupials in care. Antechinus and brushtailed phascogales usually only appear occasionally. These insect eaters are so needed in the environment and it is a worry when there is a particular increase of compromised animals of one species.

Resembling mice in appearance does not help the survival rate of small marsupials. Hopefully everyone will buy or make their cat a cat aviary for Christmas – these keep the cats safe and our wildlife safe.

Merry Christmas

If living with COVID-19 has taught us anything, it is that we must cherish the time we have with our friends and family.

There is nothing more important.

So, as 2021 draws to a close, the economy starts to recover, and life starts returning to normal, let’s savour every moment with friends and family.

While there’s always much to celebrate at Christmas time, let’s not forget that many people are also doing it tough.

If each of us can reach out to someone who may be alone – an old friend, a neighbour, a distant relative – it would make the world of difference.

Lastly, it’s with great optimism that I look forward to 2022 as your Federal MP. I pledge to continue my focus on delivering for our local community. Merry Christmas and happy New Year.

Citrus Road Upgrade

The final stage of Citrus Road is nearing completion since works began in August 2021.

Over the next few weeks, the road base, sealing, kerbing, drainage works and landscaping will be completed. Please know that your patience is much appreciated while we deliver this vital safety improvement.

Sunshine Coast Commuter Advocate

Last Thursday saw an announcement for a funding study into the 40km Beerwah to Maroochydore rail line, known colloquially as CAMCOS (Caboolture to Maroochydore Corridor Study).

The Morrison government revealed a $3 million funding contribution, with an expected $3 million in matching funding to come from the state, allowing $6 million for ‘investment planning’ on heavy rail into Maroochydore.

This planning will kick-off in 2022.

Since these works come under the auspices of critical infrastructure for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it is understood the state will come to the funding party.

Unlike the less-than-generous approach of its minimalist $1.25m contribution towards the Beerwah to Nambour rail study.

That will remain a question for candidates closer to the 31 October 2024 state election.

The federal commitment is found in the Australian budget papers on p275, under Appendix A: Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications.

Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien welcomed the news.

For a new Maroochydore line, we could see up to ten new railway stations located at Pelican Waters; Caloundra; Aroona; Erang Street; Kawana Town Centre; Parrearra; Mooloolaba; Maroochydore; Bradman Avenue; and, eventually Sunshine Coast Airport.

The Gold Coast is getting three new railway stations as part of the Cross River Rail works, at Pimpama, Hope Island and Merrimac.

The Gold Coast last received new railway stations at Nerang in 1997, Robina in 1998 and Varsity Lakes in 2009.

I recall Nerang station well, since as a draftsman I drew up the structural plans for it in 1996.

For the Sunshine Coast line, I cannot recall and do not know when the last rail station was built.

It has been that long.

I since discovered that Gympie North station replaced the Gympie station in 1989 and that was due to a bypass.

I do know that since 1981, when I was boarding in Brisbane to go to Bald Hills TAFE and would catch the train each week, up and down, that since then and when I began commuting again in 1998, Bray Park was the only new railway station in the 70 I had memorised from Gympie to Rosewood.

I fondly recall catching what I termed the ‘red rattler trains’ with their slide-down, timber-framed windows.

In short, we are due for more stations – and of course the requisite rail lines to go with them due to our growth.

Here’s to the 3 effs in 2022 to 2032.

That is faster, frequent and affordable rail and public transport to Nambour, Maroochydore and everywhere else.

It’s hard to believe, but the end of the year is nearly here. As 2021 draws to a close, I’ve found myself reflecting on some great highlights and achievements within our Division.

I’m pleased to see Nambour once again be home to many NAIDOC Week celebrations, paying tribute to First Nations Traditional Custodians and opening up important conversations about the history of the Kabi Kabi peoples and Jinibara peoples on the Sunshine Coast.

I was also very proud to see the refurbishment of the Nambour Heritage Library as well as the Nambour Forecourt in front of Council’s Eddie de Vere building, which has become home to some great live entertainment events. The pathway along Nambour-Mapleton Rd has been finished, along with the Mill Lane intersection upgrade.
